We obtain a sufficient condition for a Fano threefold with terminal singularities to have a conic bundle structure.
We study embeddings of symmetric groups to the space Cremona group.
The automorphism groups of the Fano-Mukai fourfold of genus 10 were studied in our previous paper [arXiv:1706.04926]. In particular, we found in [arXiv:1706.04926] the neutral components of these groups. In the present paper we finish the description of the discrete parts. Up to isomorphism, there are two special Fano--Mukai fourfold of genus 10 with the automorphism groups $GL_2(k)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ and $(\mathbb{G}_a\times\mathbb{G}m)\rtimes\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, respectively. For any other Fano-Mukai fourfold $V$ of genus 10 one has $\mathrm{Aut}(V)=\mathbb{G}_m^2\rtimes \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, except for exactly one of them with $\mathrm{Aut}(V)=\mathbb{G}_m^2\rtimes \mathbb{Z}/6 \mathbb{Z}$.
We classify nonrational Fano threefolds $X$ with terminal Gorenstein singularities such that $\mathrm{\rk}\, \mathrm{\Pic}(X)=1$, $(-K_X)^3\ge 8$, and $\mathrm{\rk}\, \mathrm{\Cl}(X)\le 2$.
We prove rationality criteria over algebraically non-closed fields of characteristic $0$ for five out of six types of geometrically rational Fano threefolds of Picard number $1$ and geometric Picard number bigger than $1$. For the last type of such threefolds we provide a unirationality criterion and prove stable non-rationality under additional assumptions.
We study the complexity of birational self-maps of a projective threefold $X$ by looking at the birational type of surfaces contracted. These surfaces are birational to the product of the projective line with a smooth projective curve. We prove that the genus of the curves occuring is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle or a fibration into cubic surfaces. Similarly, we prove that the gonality of the curves is unbounded if and only if $X$ is birational to a conic bundle.
We classify compact complex surfaces whose groups of bimeromorphic selfmaps have bounded finite subgroups. We also prove that the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of a compact complex surface of zero Kodaira dimension, as well as the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of an arbitrary compact Kaehler manifold of non-negative Kodaira dimension, always has bounded finite subgroups.
We classify uniruled compact Kähler threefolds whose groups of bimeromorphic selfmaps do not have Jordan property.
We discuss birational properties of Mukai varieties, i.e., of higher-dimensional analogues of prime Fano threefolds of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ over an arbitrary field $\mathsf{k}$ of zero characteristic. In the case of dimension $n \ge 4$ we prove that these varieties are $\mathsf{k}$-rational if and only if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point except for the case of genus $9$, where we assume $n \ge 5$. Furthermore, we prove that Mukai varieties of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ and dimension $n \ge 5$ contain cylinders if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point. Finally, we prove that the embedding $X \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Gr}(3,7)$ for prime Fano threefolds of genus $12$ is defined canonically over any field and use this to give a new proof of the criterion of rationality.
We show that, for a Q-Fano threefold X of Fano index 2, the inequality dim |-1/2K_X| <= 4 holds with a single well understood family of varieties having dim |-1/2K_X| = 4.
We construct new families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1, which contain cylinders, i.e., Zariski open subsets of form $Z\times A^1$, where $Z$ is a quasiprojective variety. The affine cones over such a fourfold admit effective $G_a$-actions. Similar constructions of cylindrical Fano threefolds and fourfolds were done previously in [KPZ11, KPZ14, PZ15].
We prove that for a Q-Gorenstein degeneration $X$ of del Pezzo surfaces, the number of non-Du Val singularities is at most $ρ(X)+2$. Degenerations with $ρ(X)+2$ and $ρ(X)+1$ non-Du Val points are investigated.
We construct 4 di erent families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1, which contain cylinders, i.e., Zariski open subsets of the form Z x A1, where Z is a quasiprojective variety. The affi ne cones over such a fourfold admit eff ective Ga-actions. Similar constructions of cylindrical Fano threefolds were done previously in our papers jointly with Takashi Kishimoto.
We give a criterion of existence of a unipotent group action on the affine cone over a projective variety or, more generally, on the affine quasicone over a variety which is projective over another affine variety.
Assuming Borisov--Alexeev--Borisov conjecture, we prove that there is a constant $J=J(n)$ such that for any rationally connected variety $X$ of dimension $n$ and any finite subgroup $G\subset Bir(X)$ there exists a normal abelian subgroup $A\subset G$ of index at most $J$. In particular, we obtain that the Cremona group $Cr_3=Bir(P^3)$ enjoys the Jordan property.
We prove that, except for a few cases, stable linearizability of finite subgroups of the plane Cremona group implies linearizability.
We give a sharp bound for orders of elementary abelian 2-groups of birational automorphisms of rationally connected threefolds.
We classify Q-Fano threefolds of Fano index > 2 and big degree.
We discuss the problem of stable conjugacy of finite subgroups of Cremona groups. We show that the group $H^1(G,Pic(X))$ is a stable birational invariant and compute this group in some cases.
In a previous paper we established that for any del Pezzo surface Y of degree at least 4, the affine cone X over Y embedded via a pluri-anticanonical linear system admits an effective Ga-action. In particular, the group Aut(X) is infinite dimensional. In contrast, we show in this note that for a del Pezzo surface Y of degree at most 2 the generalized cones X as above do not admit any non-trivial action of a unipotent algebraic group.
We classify Fano threefolds with only Gorenstein terminal singularities and Picard number greater than 1 satisfying an additional assumption that the $G$-invariant part of the Weil divisor class group is of rank 1 with respect to an action of some group $G$.
Let $X$ be a rationally connected three-dimensional algebraic variety and let $τ$ be an element of order two in the group of its birational selfmaps. Suppose that there exists a non-uniruled divisorial component of the $τ$-fixed point locus. Using the equivariant minimal model program we give a rough classification of such elements.
We classify all finite simple subgroups in the Cremona group of rank 3
We address the following question: When an affine cone over a smooth Fano threefold admits an effective action of the additive group? In this paper we deal with Fano threefolds of index 1 and Picard number 1. Our approach is based on a geometric criterion from our previous paper, which relates the existence of an additive group action on the cone over a smooth projective variety X with the existence of an open polar cylinder in X. Non-trivial families of Fano threefolds carrying a cylinder were found in loc. cit. Here we provide new such examples.
We classify Fano threefolds with only terminal singularities whose canonical class is Cartier and divisible by 2, and satisfying an additional assumption that the $G$-invariant part of the Weil divisor class group is of rank 1 with respect to an action of some group $G$. In particular, we find a lot of examples of Fano 3-folds with "many" symmetries.
Let $(X,C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f: (X,C)\to (Z,o)$ such that $C=f^{-1}(o)_{red}$ and $-K_X$ is ample. Assume that $(X,C)$ contains a point of type (IC) or (IIB). We complete the classification of such germs in terms of a general member $H\in |\mathcal O_X|$ containing $C$.
We address the following question: Determine the affine cones over smooth projective varieties which admit an action of a connected algebraic group different from the standard C*-action by scalar matrices and its inverse action. We show in particular that the affine cones over anticanonically embedded smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 4 possess such an action. A question by Flenner and the third author whether this is also true for cubic surfaces, occurs to be out of reach for our methods. Nevertheless, we provide a general geometric criterion that could be helpful also in this case.
For the subgroups of the Cremona group $\mathrm{Cr}_3(\mathbb C)$ having the form $(\boldsymbolμ_p)^s$, where $p$ is prime, we obtain an upper bound for $s$. Our bound is sharp if $p\ge 17$.
Let $(X,C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along an irreducible reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f: (X,C)\to (Z,o)$ such that $C=f^{-1}(o)_{\red}$ and $-K_X$ is ample. Assume that a general member $F\in |-K_X|$ meets $C$ only at one point $P$ and furthermore $(F,P)$ is Du Val of type A if index$(X,P)=4$. We classify all such germs in terms of a general member $H\in |O_X|$ containing $C$.
We study Q-Fano threefolds of large Fano index. In particular, we prove that the maximum of Fano index is attained for the weighted projective space P(3,4,5,7).
We prove that the interval $(5/6, 1)$ contains no 3-dimensional canonical thresholds.
We prove that a terminal three-dimensional del Pezzo fibration has no fibers of multiplicity $\ge 6$. We also obtain a rough classification possible configurations of singular points on multiple fibers and give some examples.
A Q-conic bundle germ is a proper morphism from a threefold with only terminal singularities to the germ $(Z \ni o)$ of a normal surface such that fibers are connected and the anti-canonical divisor is relatively ample. Building upon our previous paper [math/0603736], we prove the existence of a Du Val anti-canonical member under the assumption that the central fiber is irreducible.
A $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle is a proper morphism from a threefold with only terminal singularities to a normal surface such that fibers are connected and the anti-canonical divisor is relatively ample. We study the structure of $\mathbb Q$-conic bundles near their singular fibers. One corollary to our main results is that the base surface of every $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle has only Du Val singularities of type A (a positive solution of a conjecture by Iskovskikh). We obtain the complete classification of $\mathbb Q$-conic bundles under the additional assumption that the singular fiber is irreducible and the base surface is singular.
A $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle germ is a proper morphism from a threefold with only terminal singularities to the germ $(Z \ni o)$ of a normal surface such that fibers are connected and the anti-canonical divisor is relatively ample. We obtain the complete classification of $\mathbb Q$-conic bundle germs when the base surface germ is singular. This is a generalization of our previous paper math/0603736, which further assumed that the fiber over $o$ is irreducible.
We study Mori fiber spaces over a two-dimensional base which satisfy the semistability assumption. As an application of our technique we give a new proof of the existence of semistable 3-fold flips.
We prove that the largest accumulation point of the set $\mathcal{T}_3$ of all three-dimensional log canonical thresholds $c(X,F)$ is 5/6.
Let $(Z,o)$ be a three-dimensional terminal singularity of type $cA/r$. We prove that all exceptional divisors over $o$ with discrepancies $\le 1$ are rational.
