Wetting and phase separation in soft adhesion

In the classic theory of solid adhesion, surface energy drives deformation to increase contact area while bulk elasticity opposes it. Recently, solid surface stress has been shown also to play an important role in opposing deformation of soft materials. This suggests that the contact line in soft adhesion should mimic that of a liquid droplet, with a contact angle determined by surface tensions. Consistent with this hypothesis, we observe a contact angle of a soft silicone substrate on rigid silica spheres that depends on the surface functionalization but not the sphere size. However, to satisfy this wetting condition without a divergent elastic stress, the gel separates from its solvent near the contact line. This creates a four-phase contact zone with two additional contact lines hidden below the surface of the substrate. While the geometries of these contact lines are independent of the size of the sphere, the volume of the phase-separated region is not, but rather depends on the indentation volume. These results indicate that theories of adhesion of soft gels need to account for both the compressibility of the gel network and a non-zero surface stress between the gel and its solvent.

Antiferromagnetic Exchange Interactions in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ ferromagnetic Heusler alloy

Magnetism in Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga,In,Sn,Sb) Heusler alloys has so far been predominantly attributed to Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida type interactions between Mn atoms. We investigate magnetic interactions in one such alloy, Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and attempt to explain the origin of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions that coexist with ferromagnetic ones. Through the combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we find that Ni plays an important role along with Mn in the overall magnetism. A significant hybridization that develops between Mn and Ni orbitals results in a small antiferromagnetic moment at Ni sites. The shift in the XMCD hysteresis loops in the martensitic phase suggests that antiferromagnetism results from superexchange like interactions between Mn atoms mediated by Ni.

Nanopattern on Carbon and by Carbon

We have reported nanopattern formation on carbon thin film and Si(100) surfaces by low energy inert and carbon ion beams. It is interesting to observe the role of carbon as target as well as projectile for nano patterning. Using carbon thin film as target, nano patterns of carbon are formed by inert (Ar+) and self (C+) ion bombardment, whereas carbon ion beam is used to form well ordered Si nano ripple structure in a cost effective way where implanted carbon plays an important role to form Si ripple in relatively lower fluence than the inert projectile.

Key factors of ion induced nanopatterning

We have reported the dependence of projectile mass, chemical reactivity and effect of molecular beams on the ion induced nano structure formation, when 8 keV He1+, N1+, O1+, Ar1+ atomic ions and 16 keV N21+ and O21+ molecular ions are bombarded on the Si(100) surface at an incidence angle of 60^{\circ}. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurement shows that the initiation and growth of ripple structures are determined not only by the collision cascades but also by the chemical reactivity and molecular state of the projectiles. This experimental investigation explores the necessary requirements for ion induced controlled nanopatterning.

Kinetics of microribbon formation in a simplified model of amelogenin biomacromolecules

We show that the kinetics of microribbon formation of amelogenin molecules is well described by a combination of translational and rotational diffusion of a simplified anisotropic bipolar model consisting of hydrophobic spherical colloid particles and a point charge located on each particle surface. The colloid particles interact via a standard depletion attraction while the point charges interact through a screened Coulomb repulsion. We study the kinetics via a Brownian dynamics simulation of both translational and rotational motions and show that the anisotropy brought in by the charge dramatically affects the kinetic pathway of cluster formation and our simple model captures the main features of the experimental observations.

Projectile's mass, reactivity and molecular dependence on ion nanostructuring

We have reported the dependence of projectile mass along with the chemical reactivity and nonlinear effects on ion beam induced nano structure formation when 8 keV He1+, N1+, O1+, Ar1+ atomic ions and 16 keV N21+ and O21+ molecular ions are bombarded on the Si (100) surface at an incidence angle of 600. Ex situ atomic force microcopy (AFM) measurements reveals the ripple structure development of various forms and dimensions depending on the projectiles mass, chemical reactivity and molecular state. This experimental study explores the necessary requirements for ion induced nanopatterning and their control.

Some topics in the kinetics of protein aggregation

Preliminary results are presented for the kinetics of phase separation in three distinct models of protein aggregation. The first is a model of the formation of spherical microcrystals of insulin via an initial formation of fractal clusters of insulin. The results of our Brownian dynamics study of this model are in qualitative agreement with a recent experimental study (Biophys. Jour. 89 (2005) 3424-3433) of microcrystal formation from aqueous mixtures of insulin. A second work involves a theory for the formation of metastable bundles of sickle hemoglobin from fibers, based on a recent generic theory of bundle formation (Phy. Rev. Lett. 99 (2007) 098101). We also discuss a model for the microscopic formation of these fibers. Finally, we discuss preliminary results for the kinetics of cluster formation for a six patch model of protein crystallization.

Coulomb explosion sputtering of selectively oxidized Si

We have studied multiply charged Arq+ ion induced potential sputtering of a unique system comprising of coexisting Silicon and Silicon oxide surfaces. Such surfaces are produced by oblique angle oxygen ion bombardment on Si(100), where ripple structures are formed and one side of each ripple gets more oxidized. It is observed that higher the potential energy of Arq+ ion, higher the sputtering yield of the non conducting (oxide) side of the ripple as compared to the semiconducting side. The results are explained in terms of Coulomb explosion model where potential sputtering depends on the conductivity of the ion impact sites.

Entangled states, Lorentz transformations, Spin-precession in magnetic fields

Two positive mass, spin $\frac 12$ particles created in an entangled state are studied in the presence of a constant magnetic field inducing distinct precessions, depending on the respective momenta, of the two spins. The charge and anomalous magnetic moment of each particle is taken into account. Consequences for entanglement and, more generally, on correlations, are derived. We start, however, with a compact derivation of the effects of Lorentz transformations on such entangled states, though that has been studied by several authors. Our formalism displays conveniently the analogies and the differences between the two cases. Moreover, combining the two, one obtains the case of constant, orthogonal electric and magnetic fields. More general perspectives are evoked in the concluding remarks.

Spectral Decomposition and Baxterisation of Exotic Bialgebras and Associated Noncommutative Geometries

We study the geometric aspects of two exotic bialgebras S03 and S14 introduced in math.QA/0206053. These bialgebras are obtained by the Faddeev-Reshetikhin-Takhtajan RTT prescription with non-triangular R-matrices which are denoted $R_{03}$ and $R_{14}$ in the classification of Hietarinta, and they are not deformations of either GL(2) or GL(1/1). We give the spectral decomposition which involves two, resp., three, projectors. These projectors are then used to provide the Baxterisation procedure with one, resp., two, parameters. Further, the projectors are used to construct the noncommutative planes together with the corresponding differentials following the Wess-Zumino prescription. In all these constructions there appear non-standard features which are noted. Such features show the importance of systematic study of all bialgebras of four generators.

Canonical factorization and diagonalization of Baxterized braid matrices: Explicit constructions and applications

Braid matrices $\hat{R}(θ)$, corresponding to vector representations, are spectrally decomposed obtaining a ratio $f_{i}(θ)/f_{i}(-θ)$ for the coefficient of each projector $P_{i}$ appearing in the decomposition. This directly yields a factorization $(F(-θ))^{-1}F(θ)$ for the braid matrix, implying also the relation $\hat{R}(-θ)\hat{R}(θ)=I$.This is achieved for $GL_{q}(n),SO_{q}(2n+1),SO_{q}(2n),Sp_{q}(2n)$ for all $n$ and also for various other interesting cases including the 8-vertex matrix. We explain how the limits $θ\to \pm \infty$ can be interpreted to provide factorizations of the standard (non-Baxterized) braid matrices. A systematic approach to diagonalization of projectors and hence of braid matrices is presented with explicit constructions for $GL_{q}(2),GL_{q}(3),SO_{q}(3),SO_{q}(4),Sp_{q}(4)$ and various other cases such as the 8-vertex one. For a specific nested sequence of projectors diagonalization is obtained for all dimensions. In each factor $F(θ)$ our diagonalization again factors out all dependence on the spectral parameter $θ$ as a diagonal matrix. The canonical property implemented in the diagonalizers is mutual orthogonality of the rows. Applications of our formalism to the construction of $L-$operators and transfer matrices are indicated. In an Appendix our type of factorization is compared to another one proposed by other authors.

Duality and Representations for New Exotic Bialgebras

We find the exotic matrix bialgebras which correspond to the two non-triangular nonsingular 4x4 R-matrices in the classification of Hietarinta, namely, R_{S0,3} and R_{S1,4}. We find two new exotic bialgebras S03 and S14 which are not deformations of the of the classical algebras of functions on GL(2) or GL(1|1). With this we finalize the classification of the matrix bialgebras which unital associative algebras generated by four elements. We also find the corresponding dual bialgebras of these new exotic bialgebras and study their representation theory in detail. We also discuss in detail a special case of R_{S1,4} in which the corresponding algebra turns out to be a special case of the two-parameter quantum group deformation GL_{p,q}(2).

Nonlinear transforms of momenta and Planck scale limit

Starting with the generators of the Poincaré group for arbitrary mass (m) and spin (s) a nonunitary transformation is implemented to obtain momenta with an absolute Planck scale limit. In the rest frame (for $m>0$) the transformed energy coincides with the standard one, both being $m$. As the latter tends to infinity under Lorentz transformations the former tends to a finite upper limit $m\coth(lm) = l^{-1}+ O(l)$ where $l$ is the Planck length and the mass-dependent nonleading terms vanish exactly for zero rest mass. The invariant $m^{2}$ is conserved for the transformed momenta. The speed of light continues to be the absolute scale for velocities. We study various aspects of the kinematics in which two absolute scales have been introduced in this specific fashion. Precession of polarization and transformed position operators are among them. A deformation of the Poincaré algebra to the SO(4,1) deSitter one permits the implementation of our transformation in the latter case. A supersymmetric extension of the Poincaré algebra is also studied in this context.

Modified braid equations, Baxterizations and noncommutative spaces for the quantum groups $GL_{q}(N), SO_{q}(N)$ and $Sp_{q}(N)$

Modified braid equations satisfied by generalized ${\hat R}$ matrices (for a {\em given} set of group relations obeyed by the elements of ${\sf T}$ matrices ) are constructed for q-deformed quantum groups $GL_q (N), SO_q (N)$ and $Sp_q (N)$ with arbitrary values of $N$. The Baxterization of ${\hat R}$ matrices, treated as an aspect complementary to the {\em modification} of the braid equation, is obtained for all these cases in particularly elegant forms. A new class of braid matrices is discovered for the quantum groups $SO_{q}(N)$ and $Sp_{q}(N)$. The ${\hat R}$ matrices of this class, while being distinct from restrictions of the universal ${\hat{\cal R}}$ matrix to the corresponding vector representations, satisfy the standard braid equation. The modified braid equation and the Baxterization are obtained for this new class of ${\hat R}$ matrices. Diagonalization of the generalized ${\hat R}$ matrices is studied. The diagonalizers are obtained explicitly for some lower dimensional cases in a convenient way, giving directly the eigenvalues of the corresponding ${\hat R}$ matrices. Applications of such diagonalization are then studied in the context of associated covariantly quantized noncommutative spaces.

Particle-like solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills systems in d dimensions

We consider the superposition of the first two members of the gravitational hierarchy (Einstein plus first Gauss-Bonnet(GB)) interacting with the superposition of the first two members of the $SO_{(\pm)}(d)$ Yang--Mills hierarchy, in $d$ dimensions. Such systems can occur in the low energy effective action of string theory. Particle-like solutions %for the systems with only an Einstein term, and with only a GB term, in dimensions $d=6,8$ are constructed respectively. Our results reveal qualitatively new properties featuring double-valued solutions with critical behaviour. In this preliminary study, we have restricted ourselves to one-node solutions.

Modified Braid Equations for SO_q (3) and noncommutative spaces

General solutions of the $\hat{R}TT$ equation with a maximal number of free parameters in the specrtal decomposition of vector $SO_q (3)$ $\hat{R}$ matrices are implemented to construct modified braid equations (MBE). These matrices conserve the given, standard, group relations of the nine elements of T, but are not constrained to satisfy the standard braid equation (BE). Apart from q and a normalisation factor our $\hat{R}$ contains two free parameters, instead of only one such parameter for deformed unitary algebras studied in a previous paper [1] where the nonzero right hand side of the $MBE$ had a linear term proprotional to $(\hat{R}_{(12)} - \hat{R}_{(23)})$. In the present case the r.h.s. is, in general, nonliear. Several particular solutions are given (Sec.2) and the general structure is analysed (App.A). Our formulation of the problem in terms of projectors yield also two new solutions of standard (nonmodified) braid equation (Sec.2) which are further discussed (App.B). The noncommutative 3-spaces obtained by implementing such generalized $\hat{R}$ matrices are studied (Sec.3). The role of coboundary $\hat{R}$ matrices (not satisfying the standard BE) is explored. The MBE and Baxterization are presented as complementary facets of the same basic construction, namely, the general solution of $\hat{R}TT$ equation (Sec.4). A new solution is presented in this context. As a simple but remarkable particular case a nontrivial solution of BE is obtained (App.B) for q=1. This solution has no free parameter and is not obtainable by twisting the identity matrix. In the concluding remarks (Sec.5), among other points, generalisation of our results to $SO_{q}(N)$ is discussed.

RTT relations, a modified braid equation and noncommutative planes

With the known group relations for the elements $(a,b,c,d)$ of a quantum matrix $T$ as input a general solution of the $RTT$ relations is sought without imposing the Yang - Baxter constraint for $R$ or the braid equation for $\hat{R} = PR$. For three biparametric deformatios, $GL_{(p,q)}(2), GL_{(g,h)}(2)$ and $GL_{(q,h)}(1/1)$, the standard, the nonstandard and the hybrid one respectively, $R$ or $\hat{R}$ is found to depend, apart from the two parameters defining the deformation in question, on an extra free parameter $K$,such that only for two values of $K$, given explicitly for each case, one has the braid equation. Arbitray $K$ corresponds to a class (conserving the group relations independent of $K$) of the MQYBE or modified quantum YB equations studied by Gerstenhaber, Giaquinto and Schak. Various properties of the triparametric $\hat{R}(K;p,q)$, $\hat{R}(K;g,h)$ and $\hat{R}(K;q,h)$ are studied. In the larger space of the modified braid equation (MBE) even $\hat{R}(K;p,q)$ can satisfy $\hat{R}^2 = 1$ outside braid equation (BE) subspace. A generalized, $K$- dependent, Hecke condition is satisfied by each 3-parameter $\hat{R}$. The role of $K$ in noncommutative geometries of the $(K;p,q)$,$(K;g,h)$ and $(K;q,h)$ deformed planes is studied. K is found to introduce a "soft symmetry breaking", preserving most interesting properties and leading to new interesting ones. Further aspects to be explored are indicated.

Finite energy/action solutions of $p_1$ Yang-Mills equations on $p_2$ Schwarzschild and deSitter backgrounds for dimension $d \ge 4$

Physically relevant gauge and gravitational theories can be seen as special members of hierarchies of more elaborate systems. The Yang-Mills (YM) system is the first member of a hierarchy of Lagrangians which we will index by $p_1$, and the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) system of general relativity is the first member of another hierarchy which we index by $p_2$. In this paper, we study the classical equations of the $p_1 = 1,2$ YM hierarchy considered in the background of special geometries (Schwarzschild, deSitter,anti-deSitter) of the $p_2=1,2,3$ EH hierarchy. Solutions are obtained in various dimensions and lead to several examples of non-self-dual YM fields. When $p_1=p_2$ self-dual solutions exist in addition. Their action is equal to the Chern-Pontryagin charge and can be compared with that of the non-self-dual solutions.

On Combined Standard-Nonstandard or Hybrid (q,h)-Deformations

Combined $(q,h)$-deformations proposed by Kupershmidt and Ballesteros-Herranz-Parashar are studied. In each case a transformation is shown to lead to an equivalent, standard $q$-deformation. We briefly indicate that appropriate singular limits of the same type of transformations can however lead from standard biparametric $(p,q)$-deformations to non-hybrid but biparametric nonstandard $(g,h)$ ones. Finally a case of hybrid $(q,h)$-deformation is recalled, related to the superalgebra $GL(1|1)$.

Spherically Symmetric Istantons of the Scale Invariant SU(2) Gauged Grassmannian Model in d=4

(Anti)self-dual solutions of the scale invariant SU(2) gauged Grassmanian model are sought. A stronger (anti)selfduality condition for this system is defined, referred to as strong self-duality, and spherically symmetric solutions of this {\it strong} (anti)self-duality equations are found in closed form. It is verified that these are the only solutions of the strong (anti)self-duality equations. The usual (anti)self-duality equations for the axially symmetric fields are derived and seen to be not overdetermined.
