Multipartite Entanglement in Rabi Driven Superconducting Qubits

Exploring highly connected networks of qubits is invaluable for implementing various quantum algorithms and simulations as it allows for entangling qubits with reduced circuit depth. Here, we demonstrate a multi-qubit STAR (Sideband Tone Assisted Rabi driven) gate. Our scheme is inspired by the ion qubit Mølmer-Sørensen gate and is mediated by a shared photonic mode and Rabi-driven superconducting qubits, which relaxes restrictions on qubit frequencies during fabrication and supports scalability. We achieve a two-qubit gate with maximum state fidelity of 0.95 in 310 ns, a three-qubit gate with state fidelity 0.905 in 217 ns, and a four-qubit gate with state fidelity 0.66 in 200 ns. Furthermore, we develop a model of the gate that show the four-qubit gate is limited by shared resonator losses and the spread of qubit-resonator couplings, which must be addressed to reach high-fidelity operations.

New Horizons: Scalar and Vector Ultralight Dark Matter

The last decade has seen unprecedented effort in dark matter model building at all mass scales coupled with the design of numerous new detection strategies. Transformative advances in quantum technologies have led to a plethora of new high-precision quantum sensors and dark matter detection strategies for ultralight ($<10\,$eV) bosonic dark matter that can be described by an oscillating classical, largely coherent field. This white paper focuses on searches for wavelike scalar and vector dark matter candidates.

On state dependent batch service queue with single and multiple vacation under Markovian arrival process

An infinite buffer batch service vacation queue has been studied where service rate of the batch is dependent on the size of the batch and vacation rate is dependent on the queue size at vacation initiation epoch. The arrivals follow the Markovian arrival process (MAP). For service rule, general bulk service (GBS) rule is considered. The service time and vacation time both are considered to be generally distributed. Several joint distributions of interest are obtained using the bivariate vector generating function method and the supplementary variable technique (SVT). Numerical results are presented to show the behavior of the system performance to validate the analytical results.

Role of electronic excitation on the anomalous magnetism of elemental Copper

Magnetic susceptibility of elemental copper (Cu) shows an anomalous rise at low temperatures superimposed on the expected atypical diamagnetic response. Such temperature dependent susceptibility, which is also known as the Curie tail, can not be explained on the basis of Larmor diamagnetic and Pauli paramagnetic contributions expected in Cu. Using valence band resonant photoemission spectroscopy results and density functional theory calculations, we show the magnetic anomaly appears due to presence of holes in Cu 3d band, which originates from thermally excited electronic configuration. Our study therefore highlights that the Curie tail, which is generally overlooked presuming it either due to paramagnetic impurities or defects, can in fact be intrinsic to a material, and even simple systems like elemental Cu is susceptible to electronic excitations giving rise to anomalous magnetic state.

Search for oscillations of fundamental constants using molecular spectroscopy

A possible implication of an ultralight dark matter (UDM) field interacting wibeginth the Standard Model (SM) degrees of freedom is oscillations of fundamental constants. Here, we establish direct experimental bounds on the coupling of an oscillating UDM field to the up, down, and strange quarks and to the gluons, for oscillation frequencies between 10 Hz and 10^8 Hz. We employ spectroscopic experiments that take advantage of the dependence of molecular transition frequencies on the nuclear masses. Our results apply to previously unexplored frequency bands, and improve on existing bounds at frequencies > 5 MHz. We identify a sector of UDM - SM coupling space where the bounds from Equivalence Principle tests may be challenged by next-generation experiments of the present kind.

Bilayers and quasi-3D stacks of Jain series fractional quantum Hall states from parton construction

We present a description of bilayers and quasi-three dimensional stacks of Jain series of fractional quantum Hall states using their parton descriptions, and argue for them as candidate states when the interlayer Coulombic interaction is comparable to the intralayer Coulomb interaction. For the bilayers, a K-matrix theory is presented and shown to be different from decoupled or bonded layers. The quasi-3D systems have gapless gauge excitations and gapped partons that may be able to move about in the 3D, thus presenting a toy model for quantum Hall-like states in three dimensions.

Ehlers as EM duality in the double copy

Given a solution to 4D Einstein gravity with an isometry direction, it is known that the equations of motion are identical to those of a 3D $σ$-model with target space geometry $SU(1,1)/U(1)$. Thus, any transformation by $SU(1, 1) \cong SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ is a symmetry for the action and allows one to generate new solutions in 4D. Here we clarify and extend recent work on electromagnetic (EM) duality in the context of the classical double copy. In particular, for pure gravity, we identify an explicit map between the Maxwell field of the single copy and the scalars in the target space, allowing us to identify the $U(1) \subset SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ symmetry dual to EM duality in the single copy. Moreover, we extend the analysis to Einstein-Maxwell theory, where we highlight the role of Ehlers-Harrison transformations and, for spherically symmetric charged black hole solutions, we interpret the equations of motion as a truncation of the putative single copy for Einstein-Yang-Mills theory.

Giant electron-phonon coupling of the breathing plane oxygen phonons in the dynamic stripe phase of La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$

Doped antiferromagnets host a vast array of physical properties and learning how to control them is one of the biggest challenges of condensed matter physics. La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) is a classic example of such a material. At low temperatures holes introduced via substitution of La by Sr segregate into lines to form boundaries between magnetically ordered domains in the form of stripes. The stripes become dynamic at high temperatures, but LSNO remains insulating presumably because an interplay between magnetic correlations and electron-phonon coupling localizes charge carriers. Magnetic degrees of freedom have been extensively investigated in this system, but phonons are almost completely unexplored. We searched for electron-phonon anomalies in LSNO by inelastic neutron scattering. Giant renormalization of plane Ni-O bond-stretching modes that modulate the volume around Ni appears on entering the dynamic charge stripe phase. Other phonons are a lot less sensitive to stripe melting. Dramatic overdamping of the breathing modes indicates that dynamic stripe phase may host small polarons. We argue that this feature sets electron-phonon coupling in nickelates apart from that in cuprates where breathing phonons are not overdamped and point out remarkable similarities with the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites.

Light-driven permanent transition from insulator to conductor in Ga2O3

The transition from insulator to conductor can be achieved in some materials but requires modification of both the arrangement of atoms and their electronic configurations. This is often achieved by doping. Here we reveal a mechanism the lattice may adopt to induce such a transition. We show that limited exposure to sub-bandgap light caused a permanent transition from an insulator state to a conductor state in the insulating oxide Ga2O3 with 9-orders of magnitude increase in electronic conduction. Photoexcitation modifies the charge state of an O-vacancy and the redistribution of the localized electrons, leading to a massive structural distortion in the lattice that is shown to be the underlying mechanism. It modifies density of states and introduces new stable states with shallower energy levels, leading to this intriguing behavior. We suggest that this mechanism may occur in other wide bandgap metal oxides leading to drastic modification in their electronic properties.

Magnetic and transport properties in pyrochlore iridates (Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$: The role of $f$-$d$ exchange interaction and $d$-$p$ orbital hybridization

The $f$-$d$ magnetic exchange interaction is considered to be a key ingredient for many exotic topological phases in pyrochlore iridates. Here, we have investigated the evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in doped pyrochlore iridate, (Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Apart from geometrical frustration, pyrochlore iridates are well known for its active spin-orbit coupling effect. The substitution of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) for the nonmagnetic Y$^{3+}$ (4$d^0$) acts as a magnetic doping, which provides an ideal platform to study $f$-$d$ exchange interaction without altering the Ir-sublattice. With Pr substitution, system retains its original cubic structural symmetry but the local structural parameters show an evolution with the doping concentration $x$. The robust magnetic-insulating state in Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is drastically weakened, while Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 1.0) shows a paramagnetic-metallic behavior. A metal-insulator transition is observed for $x$ = 0.8 sample. This evolution of magnetic and electronic properties are believed to be induced by an exchange interaction between localized Pr-4$f$ and itinerant Ir-5$d$ electrons as well as by an increased hybridization between Ir-$t_{2g}$ and (basal) O-$p$ orbitals as observed in XAS study. The resistivity in insulating materials follows a power-law behavior with a decreasing exponent with $x$. A negative magnetoresistance is observed for present series of samples at low temperature and where the magnetoresistance shows a quadratic field dependence at higher fields.

Nature of Magnetic Excitations in the High-Field Phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$

We present comprehensive electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of in-plane oriented single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$, a quasi-two-dimensional material with honeycomb structure, focusing on its high-field spin dynamics. The measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 16 T, applied along the [110] and [100] directions. Several ESR modes were detected. Combining our findings with recent inelastic neutron- and Raman-scattering data, we identify most of the observed excitations. Most importantly, we show that the low-temperature ESR response beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region is dominated by single- and two-particle processes with magnons as elementary excitations. The peculiarities of the excitation spectrum in the vicinity of the critical field are discussed.

The field cooled state of canonical spin-glass revisited

Canonical spin-glass (SG) is an enigmatic system in condensed matter physics. In spite of the intense activities of last five decades several questions regarding the nature of the SG phase transition and the SG ground state are yet to be resolved completely. In this backdrop we have revisited the field cooled state of canonical spin-glass. We have experimentally studied magnetic response in two canonical spin-glass systems AuMn(1.8%) and AgMn(1.1%), both in the field cooled (FC) as well as zero field cooled (ZFC) state. We show that the well known magnetic memory effect, which clearly established earlier the metastable nature of the ZFC state in SG, is also present in the FC state. The results of our experimental study indicate that the FC state also is a non-equilibrium state, and hence the energy landscape involved is a non-trivial one. This in turn seriously questions the picture of spin-glass transformation as a second order thermodynamic phase transition.

Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow of multi-strange hadrons and $ϕ$ meson in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We present high precision measurements of elliptic flow near midrapidity ($|y|<1.0$) for multi-strange hadrons and $ϕ$ meson as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200 GeV. We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ $v_{2}$ is similar to that of $π$ and $p$, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0-30$\%$ and 30-80$\%$ collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between $ϕ$ and proton $v_{2}$ at low transverse momentum in the 0-30$\%$ centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton $v_{2}$.

Centrality dependence of identified particle elliptic flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions at sqrt(s)= 7.7--62.4 GeV

Elliptic flow (v_2) values for identified particles at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions measured by the STAR experiment in the Beam Energy Scan at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at sqrt{s_{NN}}= 7.7--62.4 GeV are presented for three centrality classes. The centrality dependence and the data at sqrt{s_{NN}}= 14.5 GeV are new. Except at the lowest beam energies we observe a similar relative v_2 baryon-meson splitting for all centrality classes which is in agreement within 15% with the number-of-constituent quark scaling. The larger v_2 for most particles relative to antiparticles, already observed for minimum bias collisions, shows a clear centrality dependence, with the largest difference for the most central collisions. Also, the results are compared with A Multiphase Transport Model and fit with a Blast Wave model.

Electronic Structure of FeAl Alloy Studied by Resonant Photoemission Spectroscopy and Ab Initio Calculations

Resonant photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the character of Fe 3d states in FeAl alloy. Fe 3d states have two different character, first is of itinerant nature located very close to the Fermi level, and second, is of less itinerant (relatively localized character), located beyond 2 eV below the Fermi level. These distinct states are clearly distinguishable in the resonant photoemission data. Comparison between the results obtained from experiments and first principle based electronic structure calculation show that the origin of the itinerant character of the Fe 3d states is due to the ordered B2 structure, whereas the relatively less itinerant (localized) Fe 3d states are from the disorders present in the sample. The exchange splitting of the Fe 3s core level peak confirms the presence of local moment in this system. It is found that the itinerant electrons arise due to the hybridization between Fe 3d and Al 3s-3p states. Presence of hybridization is observed as a shift in the Al 2p core-level spectra as well as in the X-ray near edge absorption spectra towards lower binding energy. Our photoemission results are thus explained by the co-existence of ordered and disordered phases in the system.

Low-temperature crystal and magnetic structure of $α$-RuCl3

Single crystals of the Kitaev spin-liquid candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ have been studied to determine low-temperature bulk properties, structure and the magnetic ground state. Refinements of x-ray diffraction data show that the low temperature crystal structure is described by space group $C2/m$ with a nearly-perfect honeycomb lattice exhibiting less than 0.2 \% in-plane distortion. The as-grown single crystals exhibit only one sharp magnetic transition at $T_{N}$ = 7~K. The magnetic order below this temperature exhibits a propagation vector of $k$ = (0, 1, 1/3), which coincides with a 3-layer stacking of the $C2/m$ unit cells. Magnetic transitions at higher temperatures up to 14~K can be introduced by deformations of the crystal that result in regions in the crystal with a 2-layer stacking sequence. The best fit symmetry allowed magnetic structure of the as-grown crystals shows that the spins lie in the $ac$-plane, with a zigzag configuration in each honeycomb layer. The three layer repeat out-of-plane structure can be refined as a 120$^o$ spiral order or a collinear structure with spin direction 35$^o$ away from the $a$-axis. The collinear spin configuration yields a slightly better fit and also is physically preferred. The average ordered moment in either structure is less than 0.45(5) $μ_B$ per Ru$^{3+}$ ion.

Measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry in $p^\uparrow+p \to W^{\pm}/Z^0$ at RHIC

We present the measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry of weak boson production in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 500~\text{GeV}$ by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured observable is sensitive to the Sivers function, one of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in proton-proton collisions from that observed in deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering. These data provide the first experimental investigation of the non-universality of the Sivers function, fundamental to our understanding of QCD.

Spin wave excitations in the pyrovanadate alpha-Cu2V2O7

The pyrovanadate alpha-Cu2V2O7 belongs to the orthorhombic (Fdd2) class of crystals with noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. Recently, the compound has been identified to be a magnetic multiferroic with a substantial electric polarization below the magnetic transition temperature TC = 35 K. Here we report the results of our inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies on a polycrystalline sample of alpha-Cu2V2O7. Our INS data clearly show the existence of dispersive spin wave excitations below TC with a zone-boundary energy of 11 meV at 5 K.We have analyzed the data using linear spin wave theory, which shows good agreement between the experiment and calculation. The analysis is consistent with the third nearest neighbor exchange interaction playing a dominant role in the magnetism of the material.

Superconductivity in La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 (x = 0.2, 0.8) under hydrostatic pressure

We have investigated the pressure effect on the newly discovered samarium doped La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductors. More than threefold increase in Tc (10.3 K) is observed with external pressure (at ~1.74 GPa at a rate of 4.08 K/GPa)) for x = 0.2 composition. There is a concomitant large improvement in the quality of the superconducting transition. Beyond this pressure Tc decreases monotonously at the rate of -2.09 K/GPa. In the x = 0.8 sample, we do not observe any enhancement in Tc with application of pressure (up to 1.76 GPa). The semiconducting behavior observed in the normal state resistivity of both of the samples is significantly subdued with the application of pressure which, if interpreted invoking thermal activation process, implies that the activation energy gap of the carriers is significantly reduced with pressure. We believe these observations should generate further interest in the La1-xSmxO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductors.

Azimuthal anisotropy in U+U and Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Collisions between prolate uranium nuclei are used to study how particle production and azimuthal anisotropies depend on initial geometry in heavy-ion collisions. We report the two- and four-particle cumulants, $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$, for charged hadrons from U+U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 193 GeV and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model.

Di-Hadron Correlations with Identified Leading Hadrons in 200 GeV Au+Au and d+Au Collisions at STAR

The STAR collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au+Au data with respect to the d+Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the \emph{ridge region}, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

Energy Dependence of $Kπ$, $pπ$, and $Kp$ Fluctuations in Au+Au Collisions from $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV

A search for the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) critical point was performed by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, using dynamical fluctuations of unlike particle pairs. Heavy-ion collisions were studied over a large range of collision energies with homogeneous acceptance and excellent particle identification, covering a significant range in the QCD phase diagram where a critical point may be located. Dynamical $Kπ$, $pπ$, and $Kp$ fluctuations as measured by the STAR experiment in central 0-5\% Au+Au collisions from center-of-mass collision energies $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV are presented. The observable $\rm ν_{dyn}$ was used to quantify the magnitude of the dynamical fluctuations in event-by-event measurements of the $Kπ$, $pπ$, and $Kp$ pairs. The energy dependences of these fluctuations from central 0-5\% Au+Au collisions all demonstrate a smooth evolution with collision energy.

Energy dependence of acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectrum at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6$ and 200 GeV

The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity $|y_{ee}|<1$ in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened $ρ$ spectral function for $M_{ee}<1.1$ GeV/$c^{2}$. The integrated dielectron excess yield at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 GeV for $0.4<M_{ee}<0.75$ GeV/$c^2$, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in In+In collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV. For $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, the normalized excess yield in central collisions is higher than that at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV and increases from peripheral to central collisions. These measurements indicate that the lifetime of the hot, dense medium created in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is longer than those in peripheral collisions and at lower energies.

Kinetic Arrest of Field-Temperature Induced First Order Phase Transition in Quasi- One Dimensional Spin System Ca3Co2O6

We have found that the geometrically frustrated spin chain compound Ca3Co2O6 belonging to Ising like universality class with uniaxial anisotropy shows kinetic arrest of first order intermediate phase (IP) to ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition. In this system, dc magnetization measurements followed by different protocols suggest the coexistence of high temperature IP with equilibrium FIM phase in low temperature. Formation of metastable state due to hindered first order transition has also been probed through cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) protocol. Kinetically arrested high temperature IP appears to persist down to almost the spin freezing temperature in this system.

From Synchrotron and magnetization measurement it is observed that there is an effect in bond lengths and lattice parameters around the magnetic transition temperature. The EXAFS study indicates that Co ion exists in the High spin state in Co doped ZnV2O4.

Measurements of Dielectron Production in Au$+$Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV from the STAR Experiment

We report on measurements of dielectron ($e^+e^-$) production in Au$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair using the STAR detector at RHIC. Systematic measurements of the dielectron yield as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and collision centrality show an enhancement compared to a cocktail simulation of hadronic sources in the low invariant-mass region ($M_{ee}<$ 1 GeV/$c^2$). This enhancement cannot be reproduced by the $ρ$-meson vacuum spectral function. In minimum-bias collisions, in the invariant-mass range of 0.30 $-$ 0.76 GeV/$c^2$, integrated over the full $p_{\rm T}$ acceptance, the enhancement factor is 1.76 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.26 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.29 (cocktail). The enhancement factor exhibits weak centrality and $p_{\rm T}$ dependence in STAR's accessible kinematic regions, while the excess yield in this invariant-mass region as a function of the number of participating nucleons follows a power-law shape with a power of 1.44 $\pm$ 0.10. Models that assume an in-medium broadening of the $ρ$ meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess in these measurements. Additionally, we report on measurements of $ω$ and $ϕ$-meson production through their $e^+e^-$ decay channel. These measurements show good agreement with Tsallis Blast-Wave model predictions as well as, in the case of the $ϕ$-meson, results through its $K^+K^-$ decay channel. In the intermediate invariant-mass region (1.1$<M_{ee}<$ 3 GeV/$c^2$), we investigate the spectral shapes from different collision centralities. Physics implications for possible in-medium modification of charmed hadron production and other physics sources are discussed.

Observation of charge asymmetry dependence of pion elliptic flow and the possible chiral magnetic wave in heavy-ion collisions

We present measurements of $π^-$ and $π^+$ elliptic flow, $v_2$, at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} =$ 200, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5 and 7.7 GeV, as a function of event-by-event charge asymmetry, $A_{ch}$, based on data from the STAR experiment at RHIC. We find that $π^-$ ($π^+$) elliptic flow linearly increases (decreases) with charge asymmetry for most centrality bins at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = \text{27 GeV}$ and higher. At $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = \text{200 GeV}$, the slope of the difference of $v_2$ between $π^-$ and $π^+$ as a function of $A_{ch}$ exhibits a centrality dependence, which is qualitatively similar to calculations that incorporate a chiral magnetic wave effect. Similar centrality dependence is also observed at lower energies.

Observation of Transverse Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion Pairs in $p^\uparrow+p$ at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in $p^\uparrow+p$ collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of five standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities eta>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the rho-meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions. Comparing the results to data from lepton-nucleon scattering will test the universality of these spin-dependent quantities.

Probing Parton Dynamics of QCD Matter with $Ω$ and $ϕ$ Production

We present measurements of $Ω$ and $ϕ$ production at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Motivated by the coalescence formation mechanism for these strange hadrons, we study the ratios of $N(Ω^{-}+Ω^{+})/(2N(ϕ))$. These ratios as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) fall on a consistent trend at high collision energies, but start to show deviations in peripheral collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV, and in central collisions at 11.5 GeV in the intermediate $p_T$ region of 2.4-3.6 GeV/c. We further evaluate empirically the strange quark $p_T$ distributions at hadronization by studying the $Ω/ϕ$ ratios scaled by the number of constituent quarks. The NCQ-scaled $Ω/ϕ$ ratios show a suppression of strange quark production in central collisions at 11.5 GeV compared to $\sqrt{s_{NN}} >= 19.6$ GeV. The shapes of the presumably thermal strange quark distributions in 0-60% most central collisions at 7.7 GeV show significant deviations from those in 0-10% most central collisions at higher energies. These features suggest that there is likely a change of the underlying strange quark dynamics in the transition from quark-matter to hadronic matter at collision energies below 19.6 GeV.

Proximate Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquid Behaviour in α-RuCl$_3$

Topological states of matter such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are of great interest because of their remarkable predicted properties including protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Such QSLs, however, have proven difficult to identify experimentally. The most promising approach is to study their exotic nature via the wave-vector and intensity dependence of their dynamical response in neutron scattering. A major search has centered on iridate materials which are proposed to realize the celebrated Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice - a prototypical topological QSL system in two dimensions (2D). The difficulties of iridium for neutron measurements have, however, impeded progress significantly. Here we provide experimental evidence that a material based on ruthenium, α-RuCl$_3$ realizes the same Kitaev physics but is highly amenable to neutron investigation. Our measurements confirm the requisite strong spin-orbit coupling, and a low temperature magnetic order that matches the predicted phase proximate to the QSL. We also show that stacking faults, inherent to the highly 2D nature of the material, readily explain some puzzling results to date. Measurements of the dynamical response functions, especially at energies and temperatures above that where interlayer effects are manifest, are naturally accounted for in terms of deconfinement physics expected for QSLs. Via a comparison to the recently calculated dynamics from gauge flux excitations and Majorana fermions of the pure Kitaev model we propose α-RuCl$_3$ as the prime candidate for experimental realization of fractionalized Kitaev physics.

Suppression of Upsilon Production in d+Au and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We report measurements of Upsilon meson production in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Upsilon yield to the measured cross section in p+p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d+Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p+p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) in the rapidity range |y|<1 in d+Au collisions of R_dAu = 0.79 +/- 0.24 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (sys.) +/- 0.10 (pp sys.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au+Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R_AA=0.49 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (sys.) +/- 0.06 (pp sys.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au+Au collisions. The additional suppression in Au+Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, understanding the suppression seen in d+Au is still needed before any definitive statements about the nature of the suppression in Au+Au can be made.

$J/ψ$ polarization in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV in STAR

We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 $<p_{T}<$ 6 GeV/$c$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The $J/ψ$ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the $J/ψ$ production mechanism since they predict different $p_{T}$ dependences of the $J/ψ$ polarization. In this analysis, $J/ψ$ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter $λ_θ$ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high $p_{T}$, indicating more longitudinal $J/ψ$ polarization as $p_{T}$ increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models.

$J/ψ$ production at low $p_T$ in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV at STAR

The $\jpsi$ $\pt$ spectrum and nuclear modification factor ($\raa$) are reported for $\pt < 5 \ \gevc$ and $|y|<1$ from 0\% to 60\% central Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\snn = 200 \ \gev$ at STAR. A significant suppression of $\pt$-integrated $\jpsi$ production is observed in central Au+Au events. The Cu+Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. $\raa$ in Au+Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with $\pt$. The data are compared to high-$\pt$ STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low $\pt$ are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration.

Beam energy dependent two-pion interferometry and the freeze-out eccentricity of pions in heavy ion collisions at STAR

We present results of analyses of two-pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV measured in the STAR detector as part of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. The extracted correlation lengths (HBT radii) are studied as a function of beam energy, azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, centrality, and transverse mass ($m_{T}$) of the particles. The azimuthal analysis allows extraction of the eccentricity of the entire fireball at kinetic freeze-out. The energy dependence of this observable is expected to be sensitive to changes in the equation of state. A new global fit method is studied as an alternate method to directly measure the parameters in the azimuthal analysis. The eccentricity shows a monotonic decrease with beam energy that is qualitatively consistent with the trend from all model predictions and quantitatively consistent with a hadronic transport model.

Beam-energy dependence of charge separation along the magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect (CME). The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this paper, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39 and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy, and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. The implications of these results for the CME will be discussed.

Beam-Energy Dependence of Directed Flow of Protons, Antiprotons and Pions in Au+Au Collisions

Rapidity-odd directed flow($v_1$) measurements for charged pions, protons and antiprotons near mid-rapidity ($y=0$) are reported in $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV Au + Au collisions as recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). At intermediate impact parameters, the proton and net-proton slope parameter $dv_1/dy|_{y=0}$ shows a minimum between 11.5 and 19.6 GeV. In addition, the net-proton $dv_1/dy|_{y=0}$ changes sign twice between 7.7 and 39 GeV. The proton and net-proton results qualitatively resemble predictions of a hydrodynamic model with a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined matter, and differ from hadronic transport calculations.

Calibration and performance of the STAR Muon Telescope Detector using cosmic rays

We report the timing and spatial resolution from the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) installed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Cosmic ray muons traversing the STAR detector have an average transverse momentum of 6 GeV/c. Due to their very small multiple scattering, these cosmic muons provide an ideal tool to calibrate the detectors and measure their timing and spatial resolution. The values obtained were ~100 ps and ~1-2 cm, respectively. These values are comparable to those obtained from cosmic-ray bench tests and test beams.

Charged-to-neutral correlation at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV

Event-by-event fluctuations of the ratio of inclusive charged to photon multiplicities at forward rapidity in Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV have been studied. Dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidences of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as baselines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A non-zero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations is observed in excess to the model prediction when charged particles and photons are measured in the same acceptance. We find that, unlike dynamical net-charge fluctuation, charge-neutral fluctuation is not dominated by correlation due to particle decay. Results are compared to the expectations based on the generic production mechanism of pions due to isospin symmetry, for which no significant (<1%) deviation is observed.

Chemical Pressure effect at the boundary of Mott insulator and itinerant electron limit of Spinel Vanadates

The chemical pressure effect on the structural, transport, magnetic and electronic properties (by measuring X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) of ZnV2O4 has been investigated by doping Mn and Co on the Zinc site of ZnV2O4. With Mn doping the V-V distance increases and with Co doping it decreases. The resistivity and thermoelectric power data indicate that as the V-V distance decreases the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. The transport data also indicate that the conduction is due to the small polaron hopping. The chemical pressure shows the non-monotonous behaviour of charge gap and activation energy. The XPS study also supports the observation that with decrease of the V-V separation the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. On the other hand when Ti is doped on the V-site of ZnV2O4 the metal-metal distance decreases and at the same time the TN also increases.

In this paper results of the cosmic ray test of a four-gap bakelite-based prototype MRPC operated in streamer mode and six-gap glass-based MRPC operated in avalanche mode are discussed.

Dielectron Mass Spectra from Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV

We report the STAR measurements of dielectron ($e^+e^-$) production at midrapidity ($|y_{ee}|<$1) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200\,GeV. The measurements are evaluated in different invariant mass regions with a focus on 0.30-0.76 ($ρ$-like), 0.76-0.80 ($ω$-like), and 0.98-1.05 ($ϕ$-like) GeV/$c^{2}$. The spectrum in the $ω$-like and $ϕ$-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the $ρ$-like region, however, the vacuum $ρ$ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77$\pm$0.11(stat.)$\pm$0.24(sys.)$\pm$0.33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the $ρ$ meson. The excess yield in the $ρ$-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the $ω$ and $ϕ$ yields. Theoretical models with broadened $ρ$ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies.

Giant Goos-Hänchen shift in Scattering: the role of interfering Localized Plasmon modes

The longitudinal and the transverse beam shifts, namely, the Goos-Hänchen (GH) and the Spin-Hall (SH) shifts are usually observed at planar interfaces. It has recently been shown that the transverse SH shift may also arise due to scattering of plane waves. Here, we show that analogous in-plane (longitudinal) shift also exist in scattering of plane waves from micro/nano systems. We study both the GH and the SH shifts in plasmonic metal nanoparticles/ nanostructures and dielectric micro-particles employing a unified framework that utilizes the transverse components of the Poynting vector of the scattered wave. The results demonstrate that interference of neighboring resonance modes in plasmonic nanostructures (e.g., electric dipolar and quadrupolar modes in metal spheres) leads to giant enhancement of GH shift in scattering from such systems. We also unravel interesting correlations between these shifts with the polarimetry parameters, diattenuation and retardance.

Jet-Hadron Correlations in sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV p+p and Central Au+Au Collisions

Azimuthal angular correlations of charged hadrons with respect to the axis of a reconstructed (trigger) jet in Au+Au and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} = 200 \text{GeV}$ in STAR are presented. The trigger jet population in Au+Au collisions is biased towards jets that have not interacted with the medium, allowing easier matching of jet energies between Au+Au and p+p collisions while enhancing medium effects on the recoil jet. The associated hadron yield of the recoil jet is significantly suppressed at high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}^{\text{assoc}}$) and enhanced at low $p_{\text{T}}^{\text{assoc}}$ in 0-20% central Au+Au collisions compared to p+p collisions, which is indicative of medium-induced parton energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of Charge Multiplicity Asymmetry Correlations in High Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at 200 GeV

A study is reported of the same- and opposite-sign charge-dependent azimuthal correlations with respect to the event plane in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. The charge multiplicity asymmetries between the up/down and left/right hemispheres relative to the event plane are utilized. The contributions from statistical fluctuations and detector effects were subtracted from the (co-)variance of the observed charge multiplicity asymmetries. In the mid- to most-central collisions, the same- (opposite-) sign pairs are preferentially emitted in back-to-back (aligned on the same-side) directions. The charge separation across the event plane, measured by the difference, $Δ$, between the like- and unlike-sign up/down $-$ left/right correlations, is largest near the event plane. The difference is found to be proportional to the event-by-event final-state particle ellipticity (via the observed second-order harmonic $v^{\rm obs}_{2}$), where $Δ=(1.3\pm1.4({\rm stat})^{+4.0}_{-1.0}({\rm syst}))\times10^{-5}+(3.2\pm0.2({\rm stat})^{+0.4}_{-0.3}({\rm syst}))\times10^{-3}v^{\rm obs}_{2}$ for 20-40% Au+Au collisions. The implications for the proposed chiral magnetic effect are discussed.

We report measurements of single- and double- spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}$ and $Z/γ^*$ boson production in longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for $W^{\pm}$ were measured as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which provides a theoretically clean probe of the proton's polarized quark distributions at the scale of the $W$ mass. The results are compared to theoretical predictions, constrained by recent polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements, and show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the range $0.05<x<0.2$.

Observation of $D^0$ meson nuclear modifications in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV

We report the first measurement of charmed-hadron ($D^0$) production via the hadronic decay channel ($D^0\rightarrow K^- + π^+$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200\,GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross-section per nucleon-nucleon collision at mid-rapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, $N_{bin}$, from $p$+$p$ to central Au+Au collisions. The $D^0$ meson yields in central Au+Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in $p$+$p$ scaled by $N_{bin}$, for transverse momenta $p_{T}>3$ GeV/$c$, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate $p_{T}$ is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Temperature evolution of magnetic and transport behavior in 5\textit{d} Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$: Significance of magneto-structural coupling

We have investigated the temperature evolution of magnetism and its interrelation with structural parameters in perovskite-based layered compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which is believed to be a $J_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator. The structural distortion plays an important role in this material which induces a weak ferromagnetism in otherwise antiferromagnetically ordered magnetic state with transition temperature around 240 K. Interestingly, at low temperature below around 100 K, a change in magnetic moment has been observed. Temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements show sudden changes in structural parameters around 100 K are responsible for this. Resistivity measurements show insulating behavior throughout the temperature range across the magnetic phase transition. The electronic transport can be described with Mott's two-dimensional variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, however, three different temperature ranges are found for VRH, which is a result of varying localization length with temperature. A negative magnetoresistance (MR) has been observed at all temperatures in contrast to positive behavior generally observed in strongly spin-orbit coupled materials. The quadratic field dependence of MR implies a relevance of a quantum interference effect.

Crossover from injection to tunneling conduction mode and associated magneto-resistance in a single $Fe_{3}O_{4}$(111)/$Alq_{3}$/Co spin-valve device

We demonstrate interface energy level engineering, exploiting the modification in energy band structure across Verwey phase transition of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ electrode, in a $Fe_{3}O_{4}$(111)/$Alq_{3}$/Co vertical spin-valve (SV) device. Experimental results on device characteristics I-V) study exhibit a transition in conduction mode from carrier injection to tunneling across Verwey transition temperature ($T_{V}$) of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ electrode. Both giant magneto-resistance (GMR) and tunneling MR (TMR) have been observed in a single SV device as a function of temperature, below and above $T_{V}$, respectively. Appearance of GMR, accompanied by injection limited natural Schottky-like I-V characteristics, provide evidences of spin injection at electrode/$Alq_{3}$ interface and transport through molecular orbitals in this SV device. Features of TMR exhibit significant differences from that of GMR. This is due to the dominant hyperfine-field interaction in the multi-step tunneling regime. We have achieved room-temperature SV operation in our device. A phenomenological model for device operation has been proposed to explain the transition in the conduction mode and associated MR features across $T_{V}$. We propose that the tuning of charge gap at Fermi level across Verwey transition due to charge ordering on the octahedral iron sites of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ results in a corresponding tuning of conduction mode causing this unique cross over from GMR to TMR in this ferrite-based organic SV.

Elliptic flow of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 7.7--62.4 GeV

Measurements of the elliptic flow, $v_{2}$, of identified hadrons ($π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K_{s}^{0}$, $p$, $\bar{p}$, $ϕ$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $Ξ^{-}$, $\barΞ^{+}$, $Ω^{-}$, $\barΩ^{+}$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39 and 62.4 GeV are presented. The measurements were done at mid-rapidity using the Time Projection Chamber and the Time-of-Flight detectors of the STAR experiment during the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. A significant difference in the $v_{2}$ values for particles and the corresponding anti-particles was observed at all transverse momenta for the first time. The difference increases with decreasing center-of-mass energy, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ (or increasing baryon chemical potential, $μ_{B}$) and is larger for the baryons as compared to the mesons. This implies that particles and anti-particles are no longer consistent with the universal number-of-constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of $v_{2}$ that was observed at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200 GeV. However, for the group of particles NCQ scaling at $(m_{T}-m_{0})/n_{q}>$ 0.4 GeV/$c^{2}$ is not violated within $\pm$10%. The $v_{2}$ values for $ϕ$ mesons at 7.7 and 11.5 GeV are approximately two standard deviations from the trend defined by the other hadrons at the highest measured $p_{T}$ values.

Energy Dependence of Moments of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions at RHIC

We report the beam energy (\sqrt s_{NN} = 7.7 - 200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4 < pT < 0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσand κσ^{2}, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and anti-proton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation, and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

Fluctuations of charge separation perpendicular to the event plane and local parity violation in sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Previous experimental results based on data (15 million events) collected by the STAR detector at RHIC suggest event-by-event charge separation fluctuations perpendicular to the event plane in non-central heavy-ion collisions. Here we present the correlator previously used split into its two component parts to reveal correlations parallel and perpendicular to the event plane. The results are from a high statistics 200 GeV Au+Au collisions data set (57 million events) collected by the STAR experiment. We explicitly count units of charge separation from which we find clear evidence for more charge separation fluctuations perpendicular than parallel to the event plane. We also employ a modified correlator to study the possible P-even background in same and opposite charge correlations, and find that the P-even background may largely be explained by momentum conservation and collective motion.

Freeze-out Dynamics via Charged Kaon Femtoscopy in sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV Central Au+Au Collisions

We present measurements of three-dimensional correlation functions of like-sign low transverse momentum kaon pairs from sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au collisions. A Cartesian surface-spherical harmonic decomposition technique was used to extract the kaon source function. The latter was found to have a three-dimensional Gaussian shape and can be adequately reproduced by Therminator event generator simulations with resonance contributions taken into account. Compared to the pion one, the kaon source function is generally narrower and does not have the long tail along the pair transverse momentum direction. The kaon Gaussian radii display a monotonic decrease with increasing transverse mass m_T over the interval of 0.55<=m_T<=1.15 GeV/c^2. While the kaon radii are adequately described by the m_T-scaling in the outward and sideward directions, in the longitudinal direction the lowest m_T value exceeds the expectations from a pure hydrodynamical model prediction.

Magnetic glass in Shape Memory Alloy : Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12

The first order martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 is also a magnetic transition and has a large field induced effect. While cooling in the presence of field this first order magnetic martensite transition is kinetically arrested. Depending on the cooling field, a fraction of the arrested ferromagnetic austenite phase persists down to the lowest temperature as a magnetic glassy state, similar to the one observed in various intermetallic alloys and in half doped manganites. A detailed investigation of this first order ferromagnetic austenite (FM-A) to low magnetization martensite (LM-M) state transition as a function of temperature and field has been carried out by magnetization measurements. Extensive cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) measurements and a novel field cooled protocol for isothermal MH measurements (FC-MH) are utilized to investigate the glass like arrested states and show a reverse martensite transition. Finally, we determine a field -temperature (HT) phase diagram of Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 from various magnetization measurements which brings out the regions where thermodynamic and metastable states co-exist in the HT space clearly depicting this system as a 'Magnetic Glass'.

Neutral pion cross section and spin asymmetries at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

The differential cross section and spin asymmetries for neutral pions produced within the intermediate pseudorapidity range 0.8 < η < 2.0 in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV are presented. Neutral pions were detected using the endcap electromagnetic calorimeter in the STAR detector at RHIC. The cross section was measured over a transverse momentum range of 5 < p_T < 16 GeV/c and is found to be within the scale uncertainty of a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_LL, is measured in the same pseudorapidity range. This quantity is sensitive to the gluonic contribution to the proton spin, Δg(x), at low Bjorken-x (down to x approx 0.01), where it is less constrained by measurements at central pseudorapidity. The measured A_LL is consistent with model predictions. The parity-violating asymmetry, A_L, is also measured and found to be consistent with zero. The transverse single-spin asymmetry, A_N, is measured within a previously unexplored kinematic range in Feynman-x and p_T. Such measurements may aid our understanding of the on-set and kinematic dependence of the large asymmetries observed at more forward pseudorapidity (η approx 3) and their underlying mechanisms. The A_N results presented are consistent with a twist-3 model prediction of a small asymmetry within the present kinematic range.

Observation of an energy-dependent difference in elliptic flow between particles and anti-particles in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) values for identified particles at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions, measured by the STAR experiment in the Beam Energy Scan at RHIC at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 7.7--62.4 GeV, are presented. A beam-energy dependent difference of the values of $v_{2}$ between particles and corresponding anti-particles was observed. The difference increases with decreasing beam energy and is larger for baryons compared to mesons. This implies that, at lower energies, particles and anti-particles are not consistent with the universal number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling of $v_{2}$ that was observed at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200 GeV.

Single Spin Asymmetry $A_N$ in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_N$ at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The $A_N$ was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared $t$ range $0.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035$ $\GeVcSq$, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of $A_N$ and its $t$-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this $\sqrt{s}$, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.

System size dependence of transverse momentum correlations at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 62.4 and 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We present a study of the average transverse momentum ($p_t$) fluctuations and $p_t$ correlations for charged particles produced in Cu+Cu collisions at midrapidity for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 62.4 and 200 GeV. These results are compared with those published for Au+Au collisions at the same energies, to explore the system size dependence. In addition to the collision energy and system size dependence, the $p_t$ correlation results have been studied as functions of the collision centralities, the ranges in $p_t$, the pseudorapidity $η$, and the azimuthal angle $ϕ$. The square root of the measured $p_t$ correlations when scaled by mean $p_t$ is found to be independent of both colliding beam energy and system size studied. Transport-based model calculations are found to have a better quantitative agreement with the measurements compared to models which incorporate only jetlike correlations.

Third Harmonic Flow of Charged Particles in Au+Au Collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV

We report measurements of the third harmonic coefficient of the azimuthal anisotropy, v_3, known as triangular flow. The analysis is for charged particles in Au+Au collisions at sqrtsNN = 200 GeV, based on data from the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Two-particle correlations as a function of their pseudorapidity separation are fit with narrow and wide Gaussians. Measurements of triangular flow are extracted from the wide Gaussian, from two-particle cumulants with a pseudorapidity gap, and also from event plane analysis methods with a large pseudorapidity gap between the particles and the event plane. These results are reported as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. A large dependence on the pseudorapidity gap is found. Results are compared with other experiments and model calculations.

A critical examination of magnetic states of La$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$: non-Griffiths phase and interacting ferromagnetic-clusters

We report detailed dc magnetization, linear and non-linear ac susceptibility measurements on the hole doped disordered cobaltite La$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$. Our results show that the magnetically ordered state of the system consists of coexisting non-ferromagnetic phases along with percolating ferromagnetic-clusters. The percolating ferromagnetic-clusters possibly undergo a 3D Hisenberg like magnetic ordering at the Curie temperature of 202(3) K. In between 202 and 220 K, the linear and non-linear ac susceptibility measurements show the presence of magnetic correlations even when the spontaneous magnetization is zero which indicates the presence of preformed short range magnetic-clusters. The characteristics of these short range magnetic-clusters that exist above Curie temperature are quite distinct than that of Griffiths phase e.g the inverse dc susceptibility exhibits an field independent upward deviation, and the second harmonic of ac susceptibility is non-negative. Below Curie temperature the system exhibit spin-glass like features such as irreversibility in the field cooled and zero field cooled magnetization and frequency dependence in the peak of ac susceptibility. The presence of a spin or cluster -glass like state is ruled out by the absence of field divergence in third harmonic of ac susceptibility and zero field cooled memory. This indicates that the observed spin-glass like features are possibility due to progressive thermal blocking of ferromagnetic-clusters which is further confirmed by the Wohlfarth's model of superparamagnetism. The frequency dependence of the peak of ac susceptibility obeys the Vogel-Fulcher law with $τ_0\approx 10^{-9}$ s. This together with the existence of an AT line in H-T space indicates the existence of significant inter-cluster interaction among these ferromagnetic-clusters.

CHUF and `unfreezing' (or de-arrest) of kinetic arrest in magnetic shape memory alloys

CHUF (cooling and heating in unequal field) protocol allows establishing phase coexistence through macroscopic measurements and enables distinguishing the metastable and stable phases (amongst the coexisting phase fractions across a first order magnetic transition) of a glass-like arrested state (GLAS). The observation of kinetic arrest in magnetic shape memory alloys has become a very active area of research. We highlight recent CHUF measurements on these materials that show behaviour similar to that reported earlier in manganites and other intermetallic alloys, emphasizing the generality. The martensitic transition provides an opportunity to study various properties as the CHUF protocol enables tuning of phase fractions, and controlled devitrification, of GLAS.

Continuous and Discontinuous Quantum Phase Transitions in a Model Two-Dimensional Magnet

The Shastry-Sutherland model, which consists of a set of spin 1/2 dimers on a 2-dimensional square lattice, is simple and soluble, but captures a central theme of condensed matter physics by sitting precariously on the quantum edge between isolated, gapped excitations and collective, ordered ground states. We compress the model Shastry-Sutherland material, SrCu2(BO3)2, in a diamond anvil cell at cryogenic temperatures to continuously tune the coupling energies and induce changes in state. High-resolution x-ray measurements exploit what emerges as a remarkably strong spin-lattice coupling to both monitor the magnetic behavior and the absence or presence of structural discontinuities. In the low-pressure spin-singlet regime, the onset of magnetism results in an expansion of the lattice with decreasing temperature, which permits a determination of the pressure dependent energy gap and the almost isotropic spin-lattice coupling energies. The singlet-triplet gap energy is suppressed continuously with increasing pressure, vanishing completely by 2 GPa. This continuous quantum phase transition is followed by a structural distortion at higher pressure.

Di-electron spectrum at mid-rapidity in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV

We report on mid-rapidity mass spectrum of di-electrons and cross sections of pseudoscalar and vector mesons via $e^{+}e^{-}$ decays, from $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV $p+p$ collisions, measured by the large acceptance experiment STAR at RHIC. The ratio of the di-electron continuum to the combinatorial background is larger than 10% over the entire mass range. Simulations of di-electrons from light-meson decays and heavy-flavor decays (charmonium and open charm correlation) are found to describe the data. The extracted $ω\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant yields are consistent with previous measurements. The mid-rapidity yields ($dN/dy$) of $ϕ$ and $J/ψ$ are extracted through their di-electron decay channels and are consistent with the previous measurements of $ϕ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$. Our results suggest a new upper limit of the branching ratio of the $η\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ of $1.7\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level.

Evolution of Magnetic Glass on Partial Crystallization of a Bulk Metallic Glass: Tb36Sm20Al24Co20

A comparative study on as cast and annealed rare earth bulk metallic glass (BMG) with composition Tb36Sm20Al24Co20 has been carried out by magnetization measurements. The as cast amorphous sample shows non-ergodic magnetization but does not show the behavior expected from magnetic glass. After annealing, the partially crystallized BMG shows this magnetic glass behavior. This is confirmed by the established measurement protocol of cooling and heating in unequal fields (CHUF).

Longitudinal and transverse spin asymmetries for inclusive jet production at mid-rapidity in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt{s}=200 GeV

We report STAR measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL, the transverse single-spin asymmetry A_N, and the transverse double-spin asymmetries A_Sigma and A_TT for inclusive jet production at mid-rapidity in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. The data represent integrated luminosities of 7.6 /pb with longitudinal polarization and 1.8 /pb with transverse polarization, with 50-55% beam polarization, and were recorded in 2005 and 2006. No evidence is found for the existence of statistically significant jet A_N, A_Sigma, or A_TT at mid-rapidity. Recent model calculations indicate the A_N results may provide new limits on the gluon Sivers distribution in the proton. The asymmetry A_LL significantly improves the knowledge of gluon polarization in the nucleon.

Measurement of electrical properties of electrode materials for the bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers

Single gap (gas gap 2 mm) bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) modules of various sizes from 10 cm \times 10 cm to 1 m \times 1 m have been fabricated, characterized and optimized for efficiency and time resolution. Thin layers of different grades of silicone compound are applied to the inner electrode surfaces to make them smooth and also to reduce the surface resistivity. In the silicone coated RPCs an efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode of operation. Before fabrication of detectors the electrical properties such as bulk resistivity and surface resistivity of the electrode materials are measured carefully. Effectiveness of different silicone coating in modifying the surface resistivity was evaluated by an instrument developed for monitoring the I-V curve of a high resistive surface. The results indicate definite correlation of the detector efficiency for the atmospheric muons and the RPC noise rates with the surface resistivity and its variation with the applied bias voltage. It was also found that the surface resistivity varies for different grades of silicone material applied as coating, and the results are found to be consistent with the detector efficiency and noise rate measurements done with these RPCs.

Measurements of $D^{0}$ and $D^{*}$ Production in $p$ + $p$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

We report measurements of charmed-hadron ($D^{0}$, $D^{*}$) production cross sections at mid-rapidity in $p$ + $p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Charmed hadrons were reconstructed via the hadronic decays $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}$, $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^{0}π^{+}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$ and their charge conjugates, covering the $p_T$ range of 0.6$-$2.0 GeV/$c$ and 2.0$-$6.0 GeV/$c$ for $D^{0}$ and $D^{*+}$, respectively. From this analysis, the charm-pair production cross section at mid-rapidity is $dσ/dy|_{y=0}^{c\bar{c}}$ = 170 $\pm$ 45 (stat.) $^{+38}_{-59}$ (sys.) $μ$b. The extracted charm-pair cross section is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The transverse momentum differential cross section is found to be consistent with the upper bound of a Fixed-Order Next-to-Leading Logarithm calculation.

Observation of different spin behavior with temperature variation and Cr substitution in a multiferroic compound YMn$_2$O$_5$

In this article, the collective response of the spins is explored through low field bulk magnetic measurement for the series YMn$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_5$ (x= 0.0, 0.05). Low field ac susceptibility and dc magnetization of YMn$_2$O$_5$ shows multiple transition in analogy to those observed in electrical measurement of the compound. Using various time dependent magnetization protocols it has been observed that the behavior of spins in commensurate and incommensurate phase are drastically different. YMn$_{1.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_5$ undergoes a ferrimagnetic ordering with an enhanced magnetic ordering temperature as compared to the parent, which undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering. Appearance of spontaneous magnetization without any major change in the atomic structure is rather significant since the parent compound is an important multiferroic material. In addition, magnetic memory effect is observed in the Cr substituted compound whereas it is absent in the parent compound.

Tuning the phase transition dynamics by variation of cooling field and metastable phase fraction in Al doped Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$

We report the effect of field, temperature and thermal history on the time dependence in resistivity and magnetization in the phase separated state of Al doped Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$. The rate of time dependence in resistivity is much higher than that of magnetization and it exhibits a different cooling field dependence due to percolation effects. Our analysis show that the time dependence in physical properties depends on the phase transition dynamics which can be effectively tuned by variation of temperature, cooling field and metastable phase fraction. The phase transition dynamics can be broadly divided into the arrested and un-arrested regimes, and in the arrested regime, this dynamics is mainly determined by time taken in the growth of critical nuclei. An increase in cooling field and/or temperature shifts this dynamics from arrested to un-arrested regime, and in this regime, this dynamics is determined by thermodynamically allowed rate of formation of critical nuclei which in turn depends on the cooling field and available metastable phase fraction. At a given temperature, a decrease in metastable phase fraction shifts the crossover from arrested to un-arrested regimes towards lower cooling field. It is rather significant that inspite of the metastable phase fraction calculated from resistivity being somewhat off from that of magnetization, their cooling field dependence exhibits a striking similarity which indicate that the dynamics in arrested and un-arrested regimes are so different that it comes out vividly provided that the measurements are done around percolation threshold.

A new class of stable $(2+1)$ dimensional thin shell wormhole

Recently, Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) \cite{BTZ1992} has discovered an explicit vacuum solution of (2+1)-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. It has been argued that the existence of such physical systems with an event horizon and thermodynamic properties similar to (3+1) dimensional black holes. These vacuum solutions of (2+1)-dimensional gravity are asymptotically anti-de Sitter and are known as BTZ black holes. We provide a new type of thin-shell stable wormhole from the BTZ black holes. This is the first example of stable thin shell wormhole in (2+1)-dimension. Several characteristics of this thin-shell wormhole have been discussed.

Comment on "Formation of magnetic glass in calcium doped YBaCo$_2$O$_{5.5}$ cobaltites" [arXiv:1106.6253]

A recent paper from Raveau's group (arXiv:1106.6253) has shown the existence of a glass-like arrested state in two calcium-doped cobaltites, which consists of coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase fractions, resulting from arrest of kinetics at low temperature,. They use the "cooling and heating in unequal magnetic field (CHUF)" measurement protocol to show devitrification of the arrested state. They use the same section title, protocol name, and acronym as in the paper (arXiv:0805.1514) where the protocol was presented, justified, and exploited. They nowhere refer to that paper, or to its journal counterpart. We put the development of this CHUF protocol in perspective, bringing out that it was conceived for broadened first order transitions where the kinetics of the transformation gets hindered. We also point out its applicability in view of our various subsequent works (arXiv:0911.4552, arXiv:1003.4400 and their journal counterparts) further exploiting this protocol. The paper being commented on is also silent about these latter papers (or their journal counterparts) even though the use of this protocol is highlighted in these in the abstract itself.

Effect of Oxygen Content on Magnetic Properties of Layered Cobaltites PrBaCo2O5+δ

The effect of oxygen content on the magnetic properties of the layered perovskites has been investigated. The samples, PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$ (0.35 $\leq δ\leq$ 0.80) were prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction and DC magnetization. A detailed magnetic phase diagram for PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$ is presented. It is found that unlike in the case of heavier rare-earths, ferromagnetic interactions are present at all temperatures below Tc and even in the antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Moreover, in compounds with lower oxygen content, short range ferromagnetic interactions are present even above Tc. This dependence of magnetic properties on oxygen content in these layered perovskites has been linked to the changes in polyhedra around the Co ions.

History dependent nucleation and growth of the martensitic phase in a magnetic shape memory alloy Ni$_{45}$Co$_{5}$Mn$_{38}$Sn$_{12}$

We study through the time evolution of magnetization the low temperature (T) dynamics of the metastable coexisting phases created by traversing different paths in magnetic field (H) and T space in a shape memory alloy system, Ni$_{45}$Co$_{5}$Mn$_{38}$Sn$_{12}$. It is shown that these coexisting phases consisting of a fraction of kinetically arrested austenite phase and remaining fraction of low-T equilibrium martensitic phase undergo a slow relaxation to low magnetization (martensitic) state but with very different thermomagnetic history-dependent rates at the same T and H. We discovered that, when the nucleation of martensitic phase is initiated at much lower T through the de-arrest of the glass like arrested state contrasted with the respective first order transformation (through supercooling at much higher T), then the long time relaxation rate scales with the non-equilibrium phase fraction but has a very weak dependence on T. This is explained on the basis of the H-T path dependent size of the critical radii of the nuclei and the subsequent growth of the equilibrium phase through the motion of the interface.

Magnetic glasses and structural glasses: devitrification and a reentrant transition under CHUF protocol

A recent paper from Raveau's group asserts that the specially designed CHUF measurement protocol serves to bring out a special feature of the magnetic glass state. This protocol, enunciated and applied in our publications since over three years, allows establishing phase coexistence through macroscopic measurements and distinguishing the metastable and stable phases (amongst the coexisting phase fractions across a first order magnetic transition) of a glass-like arrested state. In view of the recent report of the vitrification of monoatomic germanium under pressure, we discuss the applicability of an analogous CHUP protocol for states across an arrested first order structural transition, and specifically in establishing whether the vitrification was partial or complete.

Origin of the unconventional magnetoresistance in Sr2FeMoO6

The unusual magnetoresistance (MR) behavior in Sr2FeMoO6, recently termed as spin-valve type MR (SVMR), presents several anomalies that are little understood so far. The difficulty in probing the origin of this phenomenon, arising from the magnetic property of only a small volume fraction of the ferromagnetic bulk, is circumvented in the present study by the use of ac susceptibility measurements that are sensitive to the slope rather than the magnitude of the magnetization. The present study unravels a spin-glass (SG) like surface layer around each soft ferromagnetic (FM) grain of Sr2FeMoO6. It is also observed that there is a very strong exchange coupling between the two, generating `exchange bias' effect, which consequently creates the `valve', responsible for the unusual MR effects.

Performance simulation of a MRPC-based PET Imaging System

The low cost and high resolution gas-based Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) opens a new possibility to find an efficient alternative detector for Time of Flight (TOF) based Positron Emission Tomography, where the sensitivity of the system depends largely on the time resolution of the detector. Suitable converters can be used to increase the efficiency of detection of photons from annihilation. In this work, we perform a detailed GEANT4 simulation to optimize the converter thickness thereby improving the efficiency of photon conversion. Also we have developed a Monte Carlo based simulation of MRPC response thereby obtaining the intrinsic time resolution of the detector, making it possible to simulate the final response of MRPC-based systems for PET imaging. The result of the cosmic ray test of a four-gap Bakelite-based MRPC operating in streamer mode is discussed.

Relating field-induced shift in transition temperature to the kinetics of coexisting phases in magnetic shape memory alloys

In a magnetic shape memory alloy system, we vary composition following phenomenological arguments to tune macroscopic properties. We achieve significantly higher shift in austenite to martensitic phase transition temperature with magnetic field. This enhancement is accompanied by significant broadening of the transition and by field-induced arrest of kinetics, both of which are related to the dynamics of the coexisting phases. This reveals hitherto unknown interrelationship between different length-scales. This may serve as an effective route for comprehensive understanding of similar multicomponent systems which show considerable variation in physical properties by minor change in microscopic parameters.

The magnetization of PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12} sueprconductor

The magnetization of the PrFeAsO$_{0.60}$F$_{0.12}$ polycrystalline sample has been measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field $(H)$. The observed total magnetization is the sum of a superconducting irreversible magnetization ($M_s$) and a paramagnetic magnetization ($M_p$). Analysis of dc susceptibility $χ(T)$ in the normal state shows that the paramagnetic component of magnetization comes from the Pr$^{+3}$ magnetic moments. The intragrain critical current density $(J_L)$ derived from the magnetization measurement is large. The $J_L(H)$ curve displays a second peak which shifts towards the high-field region with decreasing temperature. In the low-field region, a plateau up to a field $H^*$ followed by a power law $H^{-5/8}$ behavior of $J_L(H)$ is the characteristic of the strong pinning. A vortex phase diagram for the present superconductor has been obtained from the magnetization and resistivity data.

Effect of induced shape anisotropy on magnetic properties of ferromagnetic cobalt nanocubes

We report on the synthesis of ferromagnetic cobalt nanocubes of various sizes using thermal pyrolysis method and the effect of shape anisotropy on the static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied. Shape anisotropy of approximately 10 % was introduced in nanocubes by making nanodiscs using a linear chain amine surfactant during synthesis process. It has been observed that, ferromagnetism persisted above room temperature and a sharp drop in magnetic moment at low temperatures in zero-field cooled magnetization may be associated with the spin disorder due to the effective anisotropy present in the system. Dynamic magnetic properties were studied using RF transverse susceptibility measurements at different temperatures and the singularities due to anisotropy fields were probed at low temperatures. Symmetrically located broad peaks are observed in the frozen state at the effective anisotropy fields and the peak structure is strongly affected by shape anisotropy and temperature. Irrespective of size the shape anisotropy gave rise to higher coercive fields and larger transverse susceptibility ratio at all temperatures. The role of shape anisotropy and the size of the particles on the observed magnetic behaviour were discussed.

Magnetism, structure, and charge correlation at a pressure-induced Mott-Hubbard insulator-metal transition

We use synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport under pressure to probe both the magnetism and the structure of single crystal NiS2 across its Mott-Hubbard transition. In the insulator, the low-temperature antiferromagnetic order results from superexchange among correlated electrons and couples to a (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) superlattice distortion. Applying pressure suppresses the insulating state, but enhances the magnetism as the superexchange increases with decreasing lattice constant. By comparing our results under pressure to previous studies of doped crystals we show that this dependence of the magnetism on the lattice constant is consistent for both band broadening and band filling. In the high pressure metallic phase the lattice symmetry is reduced from cubic to monoclinic, pointing to the primary influence of charge correlations at the transition. There exists a wide regime of phase separation that may be a general characteristic of correlated quantum matter.

Overtaking while approaching equilibrium

A system initially far from equilibrium is expected to take more time to reach equilibrium than a system that was initially closer to equilibrium. The old puzzling observation (also called Mpemba effect) that when a sample of hot water and another sample of cold water are put in a freezer to equilibrate, the hot water sometimes overtakes as they cool, has been highlighted recently. In the extensively studied colossal magnetoresistance manganites, cooling in a magnetic field (H) often results in an inhomogeneous mixture of transformed equilibrium phase and a kinetically arrested non-equilibrium phase which relaxes slowly towards equilibrium at fixed H and temperature (T). Here we show that the magnetization decay rate at the same H and T is larger for the state that was initially farther from equilibrium, and it continues to relax faster even after these have become equal. Our result should help propose an explanation, for Mpemba effect, that does not attribute it to any artifact.

The dynamics of magnetization in phase separated manganite around half doping: a case study for Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.925}$Ga$_{0.075}$O$_{3}$

We investigate the dynamics of magnetization in the phase separated (PS) state after introducing the quenched disorder at the Mn-site of a manganite around half doping. The compound, Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.925}$Ga$_{0.075}$O$_{3}$, exhibits PS with the coexistence of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) clusters where the size of the FM clusters is substantially reduced due to the disorder introduced by nonmagnetic Ga substitution. At low temperature, the system develops a new magnetic anomaly, which is marked by a peak in the zero field cooled magnetization. Detailed study of linear as well as nonlinear ac susceptibilities coupled with dc magnetization indicates that this peak arises due to the thermal blocking of nanometer size FM clusters demonstrating superparamagnetic behavior. The system, however, exhibits slow magnetic relaxation, aging effect, memory effect in both field cooled and zero field cooled magnetization below the blocking temperature. These imply the presence of collective behavior induced by the interaction between the clusters. Moreover, the magnetic relaxation measured with positive and negative temperature excursions exhibits asymmetric response suggesting that the dynamics in this phase separated system is accounted by the hierarchical model rather than the droplet model which are commonly used to describe the similar collective dynamics in glassy system.

The interparticle interaction and crossover in critical lines on field-temperature plane in Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ nanoparticles

The magnetic properties and the effects of interparticle interaction on it have been studied in nanoparticles of half doped Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$. Three samples consisting of nanoparticles of different average particle sizes are synthesized to render the variation in interparticle interaction. Though all the samples crystallize in the same structure to that of their bulk compound, the low temperature ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition, which is present in bulk compound, is not evident in the nanoparticles. Linear as well as nonlinear ac susceptibility coupled with dc magnetic measurements have shown the superparamagnetic behavior of these nanoparticles where the blocking temperature increases with the increasing particle size. Presence of interparticle interaction is confirmed from the temperature variation of coercive field and the analysis of frequency dependent ac susceptibility. We have identified the nature of this interaction to be of dipolar type, and show that its strength decreases with the increasing particle size. The effect of this dipolar interaction on magnetic properties is intriguing as the compounds exhibit crossover from de Almeida-Thouless to Gabay-Toulouse like critical lines on field-temperature plane above their respective interaction field. In agreement with theoretical prediction, we infer that this crossover is induced by the unidirectional anisotropy arising from interparticle interaction, and this is confirmed from the presence of exchange bias phenomenon.

Enhancement of Jc by Hf -Doping in the Superconductor MgB2: A Hyperfine Interaction Study

Measurements of the critical current density (Jc) by magnetization and the upper critical field (Hc2) by magnetoresistance have been performed for hafnium-doped MgB2. There has been a remarkable enhancement of Jc as compared to that by ion irradiation without any appreciable decrease in Tc, which is beneficial from the point of view of applications. The irreversibility line extracted from Jc shows an upward shift. In addition, there has been an increase in the upper critical field which indicates that Hf partially substitutes for Mg. Hyperfine interaction parameters obtained from time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements revealed the formation of HfB and HfB2 phases along with the substitution of Hf. A possible explanation is given for the role of these species in the enhancement of Jc in MgB2 superconductor.

Ferromagnetic ground state of the robust charge-ordered manganite Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5MnO(3)obtained by minimal Al-substitution

We show that minimal disturbance to the robust charge ordered Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) by 2.5% Al substitution on Mn-site drives the system towards ferromagnetic ground state. The history-dependent coexisting phases observed are explained as an outcome of a hindered first order transition with glass like arrest of kinetics resulting in irreversibility. Consistent with a simple phase diagram having ferromagnetic ground state, it is experimentally shown that these coexisting phases are far from the equilibrium.
