Resolving State Ambiguity in Robot Manipulation via Adaptive Working Memory Recoding

State ambiguity is common in robotic manipulation. Identical observations may correspond to multiple valid behavior trajectories. The visuomotor policy must correctly extract the appropriate types and levels of information from the history to identify the current task phase. However, naively extending the history window is computationally expensive and may cause severe overfitting. Inspired by the continuous nature of human reasoning and the recoding of working memory, we introduce PAM, a novel visuomotor Policy equipped with Adaptive working Memory. With minimal additional training cost in a two-stage manner, PAM supports a 300-frame history window while maintaining high inference speed. Specifically, a hierarchical frame feature extractor yields two distinct representations for motion primitives and temporal disambiguation. For compact representation, a context router with range-specific queries is employed to produce compact context features across multiple history lengths. And an auxiliary objective of reconstructing historical information is introduced to ensure that the context router acts as an effective bottleneck. We meticulously design 7 tasks and verify that PAM can handle multiple scenarios of state ambiguity simultaneously. With a history window of approximately 10 seconds, PAM still supports stable training and maintains inference speeds above 20Hz. Project website: https://tinda24.github.io/pam/

Sequential Sentence Matching Network for Multi-turn Response Selection in Retrieval-based Chatbots

Recently, open domain multi-turn chatbots have attracted much interest from lots of researchers in both academia and industry. The dominant retrieval-based methods use context-response matching mechanisms for multi-turn response selection. Specifically, the state-of-the-art methods perform the context-response matching by word or segment similarity. However, these models lack a full exploitation of the sentence-level semantic information, and make simple mistakes that humans can easily avoid. In this work, we propose a matching network, called sequential sentence matching network (S2M), to use the sentence-level semantic information to address the problem. Firstly and most importantly, we find that by using the sentence-level semantic information, the network successfully addresses the problem and gets a significant improvement on matching, resulting in a state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, we integrate the sentence matching we introduced here and the usual word similarity matching reported in the current literature, to match at different semantic levels. Experiments on three public data sets show that such integration further improves the model performance.

Tunable Casimir equilibria with phase change materials: from quantum trapping to its release

A stable suspension of nanoscale particles due to the Casimir force is of great interest for many applications such as sensing, non-contract nano-machines. However, the suspension properties are difficult to change once the devices are fabricated. Vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$) is a phase change material, which undergoes a transition from a low-temperature insulating phase to a high-temperature metallic phase around a temperature of 340 K. In this work, we study Casimir forces between a nanoplate (gold or Teflon) and a layered structure containing a VO$_2$ film. It is found that stable Casimir suspensions of nanoplates can be realized in a liquid environment, and the equilibrium distances are determined, not only by the layer thicknesses but also by the matter phases of VO$_2$. Under proper designs, a switch from quantum trapping of the gold nanoplate ("on" state) to its release ("off" state) as a result of the metal-to-insulator transition of VO$_2$, is revealed. On the other hand, the quantum trapping and release of a Teflon nanoplate is found under the insulator-to-metal transition of VO$_2 $. Our findings offer the possibility of designing switchable devices for applications in micro-and nano-electromechanical systems.

Probing W+W-gamma Production and Anomalous Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings at the CERN LHC

Triple gauge boson associated production at the LHC serves as an interesting channel to test the robustness of the Standard Model. Any deviation from its SM prediction may indicate possible existence of relevant new physics, e.g., anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo feasibility study of measuring WWA production with pure leptonic decays and probing anomalous quartic gauge-boson (e.g., WWAA) couplings, is presented in detail for the first time, with parton shower and detector simulation effects taken into account. Our results show that at the sqrt{s} = 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 100 (30) fb-1, one can reach a significance of 9 (5) sigma to observe the SM WWA production, and can constrain at the 95% CL the anomalous WWAA coupling parameters, e.g., a_{0,c}^W/Λ^2 (see Ref.[15] for their definitions), at 10^{-5} GeV^{-2}, respectively.

Probing New Physics via pp-> W+W- -> lvjj at the CERN LHC

TeV scale new Physics, e.g., Large Extra Dimensions or Models with anomalous triple vector boson couplings, can lead to excesses in various kinematic regions on the semi-leptonic productions of pp -> WW -> lvjj at the CERN LHC, which, although suffers from large QCD background compared with the pure leptonic channel, can benefit from larger production rates and the reconstructable 4-body mass Mlvjj. We study the search sensitivity through the lvjj channel at the 7TeV LHC on relevant new physics, via probing the hard tails on the reconstructed Mlvjj and the transverse momentum of W-boson (PTW), taking into account main backgrounds and including the parton shower and detector simulation effects. Our results show that with integrated luminosity of 5fb-1, the LHC can already discovery or exclude a large parameter region of the new physics, e.g., 95% CL. limit can be set on the Large Extra Dimensions with a cut-off scale up to 1.5 TeV, and the WWZ anomalous coupling down to, e.g. |λ_Z|~0.1. Brief results are also given for the 8TeV LHC.
