Sample thickness dependence of structural and magnetic properties in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The layered transition metal trihalide $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been studied extensively in recent years as a promising candidate for a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. In high quality samples, a complete structural transition from room-temperature C2/m to low-temperature R$\bar{3}$ is consistently observed, with a single magnetic transition to antiferromagnetic ordering at $\sim$7K. However, magnetic and physical properties have been shown to depend heavily on both sample size and sample quality, with small and damaged samples exhibiting incomplete structural transitions and multiple magnetic anomalies. Although large high quality samples have been well studied, an understanding of the features attributed to low quality or small sample size is limited. Here, we probe the structural and magnetic transitions of $α$-RuCl$_3$ single crystal samples via magnetic susceptibility through a range of thickness, manipulated through careful mechanical exfoliation. We present a non-destructive protocol for exfoliating crystals and show success to 30 $μ$m, where sample quality is observed to improve with successive cleaving. Higher temperature magnetic features at 10 K/12 K are found to emerge through cleaving, both with and without induced sample damage. In both cases, we link these additional magnetic features to a persistence of C2/m structure to the low-temperature regime.

Acoustic phonon dispersion of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Acoustic phonons have recently been posited as playing an integral role in explaining the half-quantized thermal Hall effect in $α$-RuCl$_3$. Therefore, we present much needed inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of its acoustic phonon dispersion, along with calculations using the frozen-phonon method. We also discuss a temperature study which conclusively shows a first-order structural transition to a non-$C2/m$ space group at low temperature. Together these results are an important backbone for future theoretical and experimental studies of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Magnetic excitations in double perovskite iridates La$_{2}$$\mathit{M}$IrO$_{6}$ ($\mathit{M}$ = Co, Ni, and Zn) mediated by 3$\mathit{d}$-5$\mathit{d}$ hybridization

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir $\mathit{L_{\mathrm{3}}}$ edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double perovskite iridate single crystals, La$_{2}$$\mathit{M}$IrO$_{6}$ ($\mathit{M}$ = Co, Ni, and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at $\sim$ 42(6) meV and $\sim$ 35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3$\mathit{d}$ ions, La$_{2}$CoIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La$_{2}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ in which the 3$\mathit{d}$ ions are non-magnetic, suggesting the importance of 3$\mathit{d}$-5$\mathit{d}$ hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double perovskite iridates. The magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

Magnetic Excitations in Square Lattice Iridates: Contrast between Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of ultra-thin epitaxial films of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, and compare their low energy magnetic and spin-orbit excitations to those of their sister compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Due to the 180$^\circ$ Ir-O-Ir bond, the bandwidth of the magnon and spin-orbiton is significantly larger in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, making it difficult to describe these two types of excitations as separate well-defined quasiparticles. Both types of excitations are found to be quite sensitive to the effect of epitaxial strain. In addition, we find that the d-level inversion observed in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is absent in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, as predicted in recent theoretical studies. Our results illustrate that the magnetic properties of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ are substantially different from those of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, suggesting that these materials need to be examined more carefully with electron itinerancy taken into account.

Evidence of a Phonon Hall Effect in the Kitaev Spin Liquid Candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$

The material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been the subject of intense scrutiny as a potential Kitaev quantum spin liquid, predicted to display Majorana fermions as low energy excitations. In practice, $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a transition to a state with antiferromagnetic order below a temperature $T_{\rm N}$ $\approx$ 7 K, but this order can be suppressed by applying an external in-plane magnetic field of $H_\parallel$ = 7 T. Whether a quantum spin liquid phase exists just above that field is still an open question, but the reported observation of a quantized thermal Hall conductivity at $H_\parallel$ $>$ 7 T by Kasahara and co-workers $\big[$Kasahara ${\it et \ al}$., Nature ${\bf 559}$, 227 (2018)$\big]$ has been interpreted as evidence of itinerant Majorana fermions in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. In this study, we re-examine the origin of the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{\rm xy}$ in $α$-RuCl$_3$. Our measurements of $κ_{\rm xy}$($T$) on several different crystals yield a temperature dependence very similar to that of the phonon-dominated longitudinal thermal conductivity $κ_{\rm xx}$($T$), for which the natural explanation is that $κ_{\rm xy}$ is also mostly carried by phonons. Upon cooling, $κ_{\rm xx}$ peaks at $T \simeq$ 20 K, then drops until $T_{\rm N}$, whereupon it suddenly increases again. The abrupt increase below $T_{\rm N}$ is attributed to a sudden reduction in the scattering of phonons by low-energy spin fluctuations as these become partially gapped when the system orders. The fact that $κ_{\rm xy}$ also increases suddenly below $T_{\rm N}$ is strong evidence that the thermal Hall effect in $α$-RuCl$_3$ is also carried predominantly by phonons. This implies that any quantized signal from Majorana edge modes would have to come on top of a sizable -- and sample-dependent -- phonon background.

Optical magnons with dominant bond-directional exchange interactions in a honeycomb lattice iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$

We have used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal optical magnons in a honeycomb lattice iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. The spectrum in the energy region 20-25 meV exhibits momentum dependence, of which energy is highest at the location of the magnetic Bragg peak, ($\textit{h}, \textit{k}$) = ($\pm$0.32, 0), and lowered toward (0, 0) and ($\pm$1, 0). We compare our data with a linear spin-wave theory based on a generic nearest-neighbor spin model. We find that a dominant bond-directional Kitaev interaction of order 20 meV is required to explain the energy scale observed in our study. The observed excitations are understood as stemming from optical magnon modes whose intensity is modulated by a structure factor, resulting in the apparent momentum dependence. We also observed diffuse magnetic scattering arising from the short-range magnetic correlation well above $\textit{T}_{N}$. In contrast to Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, this diffuse scattering lacks the $C_3$ rotational symmetry of the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that the bond anisotropy is far from negligible in $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$.

Robust Long Range Magnetic Correlation across Anti-phase Domain Boundaries in Sr$_2$CrReO$_6$

Anti-site disorder is one of the most important issues that arises in synthesis of double perovskite for spintronic applications. Although it is known that anti-site disorder leads to a proliferation of structural defects, known as the anti-phase boundaries that separate ordered anti-phase domains in the sample, little is known about the magnetic correlation across these anti-phase boundaries on a microscopic level. Motivated by this, we report resonant elastic X-ray scattering study of room temperature magnetic and structural correlation in a thin-film sample of Sr$_2$CrReO$_6$, which has one of the highest $\mathrm{T_C}$ among double perovskites. Structurally, we discovered existence of anti-phase nanodomains of $\sim$15~nm in the sample. Magnetically, the ordered moments are shown to lie perpendicular to the $c$ direction. Most remarkably, we found that the magnetic correlation length far exceeds the size of individual anti-phase nanodomains. Our results therefore provide conclusive proof for existence of robust magnetic correlation across the anti-phase boundaries in Sr$_2$CrReO$_6$.

Dirac magnons in a honeycomb lattice quantum XY magnet CoTiO3

The discovery of massless Dirac electrons in graphene and topological Dirac-Weyl materials has prompted a broad search for bosonic analogues of such Dirac particles. Recent experiments have found evidence for Dirac magnons above an Ising-like ferromagnetic ground state in a two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice magnet and in the van der Waals layered honeycomb crystal CrI$_3$, and in a 3D Heisenberg magnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$. Here we report on our inelastic neutron scattering investigation on large single crystals of a stacked honeycomb lattice magnet CoTiO$_3$, which is part of a broad family of ilmenite materials. The magnetically ordered ground state of CoTiO$_3$ features ferromagnetic layers of Co$^{2+}$, stacked antiferromagnetically along the $c$-axis. We discover that the magnon dispersion relation exhibits strong easy-plane exchange anisotropy and hosts a clear gapless Dirac cone along the edge of the 3D Brillouin zone. Our results establish CoTiO$_3$ as a model pseudospin-$1/2$ material to study interacting Dirac bosons in a 3D quantum XY magnet.

Ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction and the origin of large magnetic anisotropy in $α$-RuCl$_3$

$α$-RuCl$_3$ is drawing much attention as a promising candidate Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, despite intensive research efforts, controversy remains about the form of the basic interactions governing the physics of this material. Even the sign of the Kitaev interaction (the bond-dependent anisotropic interaction responsible for Kitaev physics) is still under debate, with conflicting results from theoretical and experimental studies. The significance of the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction (referred to as the $Γ$ term) is another contentious question. Here, we present resonant elastic x-ray scattering data that provides unambiguous experimental constraints to the two leading terms in the magnetic interaction Hamiltonian. We show that the Kitaev interaction ($K$) is ferromagnetic, and that the $Γ$ term is antiferromagnetic and comparable in size to the Kitaev interaction. Our findings also provide a natural explanation for the large anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility in $α$-RuCl$_3$ as arising from the large $Γ$ term. We therefore provide a crucial foundation for understanding the interactions underpinning the exotic magnetic behaviours observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of $α$-RuCl$_3$: a progress report

Ru M$_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of RuCl$_3$ with 27 meV resolution reveals a spin-orbit exciton without noticeable splitting. We extract values for the spin-orbit coupling constant ($λ=154\pm2$ meV) and trigonal distortion field energy ($\left|Δ\right|<65$ meV) which support the $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ nature of RuCl$_3$. We demonstrate the feasibility of M-edge RIXS for $4d$ systems, which allows ultra high-resolution RIXS of $4d$ systems until instrumentation for L-edge RIXS improves.

ARPES study of the Kitaev Candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$

$α$-RuCl$_3$ has been hinted as a spin-orbital-assisted Mott insulator in proximity to a Kitaev spin liquid state. Here we present ARPES measurements on single crystal $α$-RuCl$_3$ in both the pristine and electron-doped states, and combine them with LDA+SOC+U calculations performed for the several low-energy competing magnetically ordered states as well as the paramagnetic state. A large Mott gap is found in the measured band structure of the pristine compound that persists to more than 20 times beyond the magnetic ordering temperature, though the paramagnetic calculation shows almost no gap. Upon electron doping, spectral weight is transferred into the gap but the new states still maintain a sizable gap from the Fermi edge. These findings are most consistent with a Mott insulator with a somewhat exotic evolution out of the Mott state with both temperature and doping, likely related to unusually strong spin fluctuations.

Disordered dimer state in electron-doped Sr$_{3}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Spin excitations are explored in the electron-doped spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. As this bilayer square lattice system is doped into the metallic regime, long-range antiferromagnetism vanishes, yet a spectrum of gapped spin excitation remains. Excitation lifetimes are strongly damped with increasing carrier concentration, and the energy integrated spectral weight becomes nearly momentum independent as static spin order is suppressed. Local magnetic moments, absent in the parent system, grow in metallic samples and approach values consistent with one $J=\frac{1}{2}$ impurity per electron doped. Our combined data suggest that the magnetic spectra of metallic (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are best described by excitations out of a disordered dimer state.

Spin-orbit excitations and electronic structure of the putative Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling have been proposed to host unconventional magnetic states, including the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The 4$d$ system $α$-RuCl$_3$ has recently come into view as a candidate Kitaev system, with evidence for unusual spin excitations in magnetic scattering experiments. We apply a combination of optical spectroscopy and Raman scattering to study the electronic structure of this material. Our measurements reveal a series of orbital excitations involving localized total angular momentum states of the Ru ion, implying that strong spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions coexist in this material. Analysis of these features allows us to estimate the spin-orbit coupling strength, as well as other parameters describing the local electronic structure, revealing a well-defined hierarchy of energy scales within the Ru $d$ states. By comparing our experimental results with density functional theory calculations, we also clarify the overall features of the optical response. Our results demonstrate that $α$-RuCl$_3$ is an ideal material system to study spin-orbit coupled magnetism on the honeycomb lattice.

Magnetic order in $α$-RuCl$_3$: a honeycomb lattice quantum magnet with strong spin-orbit coupling

We report magnetic and thermodynamic properties of single crystal $α$-RuCl$_3$, in which the Ru$^{3+}$ ($4d^5$) ion is in its low spin state and forms a honeycomb lattice. Two features are observed in both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data; a sharp peak at 7~K and a broad hump near 10-15K. In addition, we observe a metamagnetic transition between 5~T and 10~T. Our neutron diffraction study of single crystal samples confirms that the low temperature peak in the specific heat is associated with a magnetic order with unit cell doubling along the honeycomb (100) direction, which is consistent with zigzag order, one of the types of magnetic order predicted within the framework of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model.

Quasiparticle-continuum level repulsion in a quantum magnet

When the energy eigenvalues of two coupled quantum states approach each other in a certain parameter space, their energy levels repel each other and level crossing is avoided. Such level repulsion, or avoided level crossing, is commonly used to describe the dispersion relation of quasiparticles in solids. However, little is known about the level repulsion when more than two quasiparticles are present; for example, in an open quantum system where a quasiparticle can spontaneously decay into many particle continuum. Here we show that even in this case level repulsion exists between a long-lived quasiparticle state and a continuum. In our fine resolution neutron spectroscopy study of magnetic quasiparticles in a frustrated quantum magnet BiCu2PO6, we observe a renormalization of quasiparticle dispersion relation due to the presence of the continuum of multi-quasiparticle states. Our results have a broadimplication for understanding open quantum systems described by non-hermitian Hamiltonian.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of electronic excitations in insulating K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$

We report an Fe $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$. This material is an insulator, unlike many parent compounds of iron-based superconductors. We found a sharp excitation around 1 eV, which is resonantly enhanced when the incident photon energy is tuned near the pre-edge region of the absorption spectrum. The spectral weight and line shape of this excitation exhibit clear momentum dependence. In addition, we observe momentum-independent broad interband transitions at higher excitation energy of 3-7 eV. Calculations based on a 70 band $dp$ orbital model, using a moderate $U_{\rm eff}\approx 2.5$ eV, indicate that the $\sim$1 eV feature originates from the correlated Fe 3$d$ electrons, with a dominant $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbital character. We find that a moderate $U_{\rm eff}$ yields a satisfying agreement with the experimental spectra, suggesting that the electron correlations in the insulating and metallic iron based superconductors are comparable.

Scattering Continuum and Possible Fractionalized Excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The combination of electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling is thought to precipitate a variety of highly unusual electronic phases in solids, including topological and quantum spin liquid states. We report a Raman scattering study that provides evidence for unconventional excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice. In particular, our measurements reveal unusual magnetic scattering, typified by a broad continuum. The temperature dependence of this continuum is evident over a large scale compared to the magnetic ordering temperature, suggestive of frustrated magnetic interactions. This is confirmed through an analysis of the phonon linewidths, which show a related anomaly due to spin-phonon coupling. These observations are in line with theoretical expectations for the Heisenberg-Kitaev model and suggest that $α$-RuCl$_3$ may be close to a quantum spin liquid ground state.

Topological states in pyrochlore iridates: long-range anisotropy strongly competing with spin-orbit interaction

In the search for topological phases in correlated electron systems, iridium-based pyrochlores A2Ir2O7 -- materials with 5d transition-metal ions -- provide fertile grounds. Several novel topological states have been predicted but the actual realization of such states is believed to critically depend on the strength of local potentials arising from distortions of IrO6-cages. We test this hypothesis by measuring with resonant x-ray scattering the electronic level splittings in the A= Y, Eu systems, which we show to agree very well with ab initio electronic structure calculations. We find, however, that not distortions of IrO6-octahedra are the primary source for quenching the spin-orbit interaction, but strong long-range lattice anisotropies, which inevitably break the local cubic symmetry and will thereby be decisive in determining the system's topological ground state.

X-ray scattering study of pyrochlore iridates: crystal structure, electronic and magnetic excitations

We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.

$α$-RuCl3: a Spin-Orbit Assisted Mott Insulator on a Honeycomb Lattice

We examine the role of spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of $α$-RuCl3, in which Ru ions in 4d5 configuration form a honeycomb lattice. The measured optical spectra exhibit a clear optical gap and excitations within the t2g orbitals. The spectra can be described very well with first-principles electronic structure calculations obtained by taking into account both spin orbit coupling and electron correlations. Furthermore, our X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Ru L-edges exhibit distinct spectral features associated with the presence of substantial spin- orbit coupling, as well as an anomalously large branching ratio. We propose that $α$-RuCl3 is a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator, and the bond-dependent Kitaev interaction may be relevant for this compound.

Dilute Magnetism and Spin-Orbital Percolation Effects in Rh-doped Sr2IrO4

We have used a combination of resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the properties of the doped spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2Ir(1-x)Rh(x)O4 (0.07 < x < 0.70). We show that Sr2Ir(1-x)Rh(x)O4 represents a unique model system for the study of dilute magnetism in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, and provide evidence of a doping-induced change in magnetic structure and a suppression of magnetic order at x_c ~ 0.17. We demonstrate that Rh-doping introduces Rh3+/Ir5+ ions which effectively hole-dope this material. We propose that the magnetic phase diagram for this material can be understood in terms of a novel spin-orbital percolation picture.

Fourier analysis of the IR response of van der Waals materials

In this letter, we report on an analytical technique for optical investigations of semitransparent samples. By Fourier transforming optical spectra with Fabry-Perot resonances we extract information about sample thickness and its discrete variations. Moreover, this information is used to recover optical spectra devoid of Fabry-Perot fringes, which simplifies optical modelling, and can reveal previously concealed spectral features. To illustrate its use, we apply our technique to a Si wafer as well as six different cleavable layered materials, including topological insulators, thermoelectrics, and magnetic insulators. In the layered materials, we find strong evidence of large step edges and thickness inhomogeneity, and cannot conclusively exclude the presence of voids in the bulk of cleaved samples. This could strongly affect the interpretation of transport and optical data of crystals with topologically protected surfaces states.

High-Energy Continuum of Magnetic Excitations in the Two-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnet Sr2CuO2Cl2

We have measured the magnetic excitation spectrum of the model square-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet $\rm Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$ over a broad range of energy and momentum using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS). The magnon dispersion along the zone boundary was accurately measured to be a 43 meV between (1/2,0) and (3/4,1/4) indicating the importance of coupling beyond nearest neighbors in the spin Hamiltonian. We observe a strong momentum dependent damping of the zone-boundary magnons at (1/2,0) revealing a high energy continuum of magnetic excitations. A direct comparison between our INS measurements and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements shows that the RIXS spectrum contains significant contributions from higher energy excitations not previously considered. Our observations demonstrate that this high-energy continuum of magnetic fluctuations is a ubiquitous feature of insulating monolayer cuprates, apparent in both inelastic neutron and light scattering measurements.

Structural origin of the anomalous temperature dependence of the local magnetic moments in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials

We report a combination of Fe K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy and $ab$-intio calculations to investigate the correlation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$. The puzzling temperature behavior of the local moment found in rare earth-doped CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [\textit{H. Gretarsson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 047003 (2013)}] is also observed in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. We explain this phenomenon based on first-principles calculations with scaled magnetic interaction. One scaling parameter is sufficient to describe quantitatively the magnetic moments in both CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$ ($x=0.055$) and Ca$_{0.78}% $La$_{0.22}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at all temperatures. The anomalous growth of the local moments with increasing temperature can be understood from the observed large thermal expansion of the $c$-axis lattice parameter combined with strong magnetoelastic coupling. These effects originate from the strong tendency to form As-As dimers across the Ca layer in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials. Our results emphasize the dual local-itinerant character of magnetism in Fe pnictides.

Sudden reversal in the pressure dependence of Tc in the iron-based superconductor CsFe2As2: A possible link between inelastic scattering and pairing symmetry

We report a sudden reversal in the pressure dependence of Tc in the iron-based superconductor CsFe2As2, similar to that discovered recently in KFe2As2 [Tafti et al., Nat. Phys. 9, 349 (2013)]. As in KFe2As2, we observe no change in the Hall coefficient at the zero temperature limit, again ruling out a Lifshitz transition across the critical pressure Pc. We interpret the Tc reversal in the two materials as a phase transition from one pairing state to another, tuned by pressure, and investigate what parameters control this transition. Comparing samples of different residual resistivity, we find that a 6-fold increase in impurity scattering does not shift Pc. From a study of X-ray diffraction on KFe2As2 under pressure, we report the pressure dependence of lattice constants and As-Fe-As bond angle. The pressure dependence of these lattice parameters suggests that Pc should be significantly higher in CsFe2As2 than in KFe2As2, but we find on the contrary that Pc is lower in CsFe2As2. Resistivity measurements under pressure reveal a change of regime across Pc, suggesting a possible link between inelastic scattering and pairing symmetry.

Tuning Magnetic Coupling in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ Thin Films with Epitaxial Strain

We report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of epitaxially-strained $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$ thin films. The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.

Avoided quantum criticality and magnetoelastic coupling in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

We study the structural and magnetic orders in electron-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2 by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron scatterings. Upon Ni-doping x, the nearly simultaneous tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural T_s and antiferromagnetic (T_N) phase transitions in BaFe2As2 are gradually suppressed and separated, resulting in T_s>T_N with increasing x as was previously observed. However, the temperature separation between T_s and T_N decreases with increasing x for x> 0.065$, tending towards a quantum bi-critical point near optimal superconductivity at x=0.1. The zero-temperature transition is preempted by the formation of a secondary incommensurate magnetic phase in the region 0.088< x < 0.104, resulting in a finite value of T_N \approx T_c+10$ K above the superconducting dome around $x\approx 0.1$. Our results imply an avoided quantum critical point, which is expected to strongly influence the properties of both the normal and superconducting states.

Incommensurate dynamic correlations in the quasi-two-dimensional spin liquid BiCu2PO6

We report detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of the frustrated two-leg ladder BiCu2PO6, whose ground state is described as a spin liquid phase with no long-range order down to 6 K. Two branches of steeply dispersing long-lived spin excitations are observed with excitation gaps of Δ_1 = 1.90(9) meV and Δ_2 = 3.95(8) meV. Significant frustrating next-nearest neighbour interactions along the ladder leg drive the minimum of each excitation branch to incommensurate wavevectors ζ_1 = 0.574πand ζ_2 = 0.553πfor the lower and upper energy branches respectively. The temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum near the gap energy is consistent with thermal activation into singly and doubly degenerate excited states. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum as well as earlier thermodynamic data could be consistently explained by the presence of strong anisotropic interactions in the ground state Hamiltonian.

Magnetic excitation spectrum of Na2IrO3 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The low energy excitations in Na2IrO3 have been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). A magnetic excitation branch can be resolved, whose dispersion reaches a maximum energy of about 35 meV at the Γ-point. The momentum dependence of the excitation energy is much larger along the Γ-X direction compared to that along the Γ-Y direction. The observed dispersion relation is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction based on Heisenberg-Kitaev model. At high temperatures, we find large contributions from lattice vibrational modes to our RIXS spectra, suggesting that a strong electron-lattice coupling is present in Na2IrO3.

Spin-orbital locked magnetic excitations in a half-metallic double perovskite Ba2FeReO6

We present a powder inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$, a member of the double perovskite family of materials which exhibit half-metallic behavior and high Curie temperatures. We find clear evidence of two well-defined dispersing magnetic modes in its low temperature ferrimagnetic state. We develop a local moment model, which incorporates the interaction of Fe spins with spin-orbit locked magnetic moments on Re, and show that this captures our experimental observations. Our study further opens up double perovskites as model systems to explore the interplay of strong correlations and spin-orbit coupling in 5d transition metal oxides.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

Field-induced magnetic behavior of the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7

We have performed resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS) measurements on single crystal samples of the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7. We observe the development of antiferromagnetic order below T* ~ 260 K, which persists down to T = 4 K under both field-cooled (fc) and zero-field-cooled (zfc) conditions. The temperature dependence of the fc and zfc magnetic Bragg peaks suggests the presence of competition between canted and collinear antiferromagnetic ground states. Under zfc conditions, we observe a suppression of magnetic peak intensity at T_D ~ 50 K which can be attributed to a spin reorientation transition. Under fc conditions, we find that the canted antiferromagnetic state is stabilized over a much wider range of temperatures, with significantly enhanced magnetic correlation lengths within the Ir-O layers. The field dependence of the magnetic Bragg peaks provides no evidence of field-induced phase transitions for H < 4 T.

Spin-Orbit Coupling in Iridium-Based 5d Compounds Probed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on a series of Ir-based 5d transition metal compounds, including Ir, IrCl3, IrO2, Na2IrO3, Sr2IrO4, and Y2Ir2O7. By comparing the intensity of the "white-line" features observed at the Ir L2 and L3 absorption edges, it is possible to extract valuable information about the strength of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. We observe remarkably large, non-statistical branching ratios in all Ir compounds studied, with little or no dependence on chemical composition, crystal structure, or electronic state. This result confirms the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling effects in novel iridates such as Sr2IrO4, Na2IrO3, and Y2Ir2O7, and suggests that even simple Ir-based compounds such as IrO2 and IrCl3 may warrant further study. In contrast, XAS measurements on Re-based 5d compounds, such as Re, ReO2, ReO3, and Ba2FeReO6, reveal statistical branching ratios and negligible spin-orbit coupling effects.

Spin-state transition in the Fe-pnictides

We report a Fe Kβx-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in the rare-earth doped iron pnictide Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE=La, Pr, and Nd). In all samples studied the size of the Fe local moment is found to decrease significantly with temperature and goes from ~0.9 μ_B at T = 300 K to ~0.45 μ_B at T = 70 K. In the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase of Nd- and Pr-doped samples (T<70K) the local moment is quenched, while the moment remains unchanged for the La-doped sample, which does not show lattice collapse. Our results show that Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE= Pr and Nd) exhibits a spin-state transition and provide direct evidence for a non-magnetic Fe^{2+} ion in the cT-phase, as predicted by Yildirim. We argue that the gradual change of the the spin-state over a wide temperature range reveals the importance of multiorbital physics, in particular the competition between the crystal field split Fe 3d orbitals and the Hund's rule coupling.

Electronic Structure of Doped Lanthanum Cuprates Studied with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

We report a comprehensive Cu $K$-edge RIXS investigation of $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (LSCO) for 0$\leq$x$\leq$0.35, stripe-ordered $\rm La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4$ (LBCO), and $\rm La_{2}Cu_{0.96}Ni_{0.04}O_4$ (LCNO) crystals. The RIXS spectra measured at three high-symmetry momentum transfer (\textbf{q}) positions are compared as a function of doping and for the different dopants. The spectra in the energy range 1-6 eV can be described with three broad peaks, which evolve systematically with increased doping. The most systematic trend was observed for \textbf{q}=($π$, 0) corresponding to the zone boundary. As hole doping increased, the spectral weight transfer from high energies to low energies is nearly linear with \emph{x} at this \textbf{q}. We interpret the peaks as interband transitions in the context of existing band models for this system, assigning them to Zhang-Rice band$\rightarrow$upper Hubbard band, lower-lying band$\rightarrow$upper Hubbard band, and lower-lying band$\rightarrow$Zhang-Rice band transitions. The spectrum of stripe-ordered LBCO was also measured, and found to be identical to the correspondingly doped LSCO, except for a relative enhancement of the near-infrared peak intensity around 1.5-1.7 eV. The temperature dependence of this near-infrared peak in LBCO was more pronounced than for other parts of the spectrum, continuously decreasing in intensity as the temperature was raised from 25 K to 300 K. Finally, we find that 4\% Ni substitution in the Cu site has a similar effect on the spectra as does Sr substitution in the La site.

Isospin Dynamics in Sr2IrO4 : Forging Links to Cuprate Superconductivity

We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal the nature of magnetic interactions in Sr2IrO4, a 5d transition-metal oxide with a spin-orbit entangled ground state and Jeff=1/2 magnetic momemts, referred to as 'isospins'. The magnon dispersion in Sr2IrO4 is well described by an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with isospin one-half moments on a square lattice, which renders the low-energy effective physics of Sr2IrO4 much akin to that in superconducting cuprates. This is further supported by the observation of exciton modes in Sr2IrO4 whose dispersion is strongly renormalized by magnons, which can be understood by analogy to the hole propagation in the background of antiferromagnetically ordered spins in the cuprates.

Long range magnetic ordering in Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure of the honeycomb lattice magnet Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a strong candidate for a realization of a gapless spin-liquid. Using resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Ir L$_3$-edge, we find 3D long range antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=13.3 K. From the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic Bragg peak, the ordered moment is determined to be predominantly along the {\it a}-axis. Combining the experimental data with first principles calculations, we propose that the most likely spin structure is a novel "zig-zag" structure.

Probing high-energy electronic excitations using inelastic neutron scattering

High-energy, local multiplet excitations of the d-electrons are revealed in our inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the prototype magnetic insulator NiO. These become allowed by the presence of both non-zero crystal field and spin-orbit coupling. The observed excitations are consistent with optical, x-ray, and EELS measurements of d-d excitations. This experiment serves as a proof of principle that high-energy neutron spectroscopy is a reliable and useful technique for probing electronic excitations in systems with significant crystal field and spin-orbit interactions.

Quantum paramagnetic ground states on the honeycomb lattice and field-induced transition to Néel order

Motivated by recent experiments on Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$), and a broader interest arising from numerical work on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model, we have studied the effect of a magnetic field on honeycomb lattice spin models with quantum paramagnetic ground states. For a model with frustrating second-neighbor exchange, $J_2$, we use a Lindemann-like criterion within spin wave theory to show that Néel order melts beyond a critical $J_2$. The critical $J_2$ increases with a magnetic field, implying the existence of a field-induced paramagnet-Néel transition over a range of $J_2$. We also study bilayer model using a spin-$S$ generalization of bond operator mean field theory. We show that there is a Néel-dimer transition for various spin values with increasing bilayer coupling, and that the resulting interlayer dimer state undergoes a field induced transition into a state with transverse Néel order. Finally, we study a spin-3/2 model which interpolates between the Heisenberg model and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) parent Hamiltonian. Using exact diagonalization, we compute the fidelity susceptibility to locate the Neel-AKLT quantum critical point, obtain the spin gap of the AKLT parent Hamiltonian, and argue that AKLT state also undergoes field-induced Neel ordering.

Revealing the dual nature of magnetism in iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides using x-ray emission spectroscopy

We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $μ_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$μ_B$/Fe, ~3.3$μ_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature change affects the local moment size.

Spin-Split Conduction band in \eb\ and Tuning of Half-Metallicity with External Stimuli

We report Eu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of the electronic structure of EuB6. We observe that the RIXS spectral weight around 1.1 eV increases dramatically when the system is cooled below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and follows the magnetic order parameter. This spectral feature is attributed to the inter-site excitation from the local 4f orbital to the spin-split 5d orbital on the neighboring site, illustrating the essential role of exchange splitting of the conducting electrons. Based on our density functional theory calculations, the RIXS data suggest that EuB6 at low temperature can be consistently described with a semi-metallic electronic structure with incomplete spin-polarization. We propose routes to achieve half-metallicity in EuB6, which utilize the strong tunability of the electronic structure against gate voltage, strain, and magnetic field.

X-ray induced electronic structure change in CuIr$_2$S$_4$

The electronic structure of CuIr$_2$S$_4$ has been investigated using various bulk-sensitive x-ray spectroscopic methods near the Ir $L_3$-edge: resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence yield (PFY-XAS) mode, and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). A strong RIXS signal (0.75 eV) resulting from a charge-density-wave gap opening is observed below the metal-insulator transition temperature of 230 K. The resultant modification of electronic structure is consistent with the density functional theory prediction. In the spin- and charge- dimer disordered phase induced by x-ray irradiation below 50 K, we find that a broad peak around 0.4 eV appears in the RIXS spectrum.

Magnetic nature of the 500 meV peak in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4$ observed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Cu $K$-edge

We present a comprehensive study of the temperature and doping dependence of the 500 meV peak observed at ${\bf q}=(π,0)$ in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on $\rm La_2CuO_4$. The intensity of this peak persists above the Néel temperature (T$_{N}$=320 K), but decreases gradually with increasing temperature, reaching zero at around T=500 K. The peak energy decreases with temperature in close quantitative accord with the behavior of the two-magnon $\rm B_{1g}$ Raman peak in $\rm La_2CuO_4$, and with suitable rescaling, agrees with the Raman peak shifts in $\rm EuBa_2Cu_3O_6$ and $\rm K_2NiF_4$. The overall dispersion of this excitation in the Brillouin zone is found to be in agreement with theoretical calculations for a two-magnon excitation. Upon doping, the peak intensity decreases analogous to the Raman mode intensity and appears to track the doping dependence of the spin correlation length. Taken together, these observations strongly suggest that the 500 meV mode is magnetic in character and is likely a two-magnon excitation.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of Cu$_2$O

A resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of the semiconductor cuprous oxide, $\rm Cu_2O$, is reported. When the incident x-ray energy is tuned to the Cu K-absorption edge, large enhancements of the spectral features corresponding to the electronic transitions between the valence band and the conduction band are observed. A feature at 6.5 eV can be well described by an interband transition from occupied states of mostly Cu 3d charactor to unoccupied states with mixed 3d, 4s and 2p character. In addition, an insulating band gap is observed, and the momentum dependence of the lower bound is measured along the $Γ-R$ direction. This is found to be in good agreement with the valence band dispersion measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Comparison of Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Spectra and Dielectric Loss Functions in Copper Oxides

We report empirical comparisons of Cu K-edge indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, taken at the Brillouin zone center, with optical dielectric loss functions measured in a number of copper oxides. The RIXS data are obtained for Bi$_2$CuO$_4$, CuGeO$_3$, Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$, La$_2$CuO$_4$, and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, and analyzed by considering both incident and scattered photon resonances. An incident-energy-independent response function is then extracted. The dielectric loss functions, measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry, agree well with this RIXS response, especially in Bi$_2$CuO$_4$ and CuGeO$_3$.

Multiple-source optical spectral weight transfer in ferromagnetic EuB6

We present the first wide range (2 meV$-$5.5 eV) optical conductivity of EuB$_6$ from reflectivity and ellipsometry measurements. Upon the ferromagnetic transition at T$_{c}$=15.5 K, interband transition $σ_{1}(ω)$ decreases at three different energy $ω$=0.5, 1.4, 2.75 eV and the lost spectral weight is transferred to the Drude $σ_{1}(ω)$ at $ω<$0.33 eV. We succeeded in explaining this unprecedented multiple-energy $σ_{1}(ω)$ change using LDA+U calculated band structure by Kunes and Pickett (Phys. Rev. B, $\textbf{69}$,165111). Our finding supports strongly that (1) EuB$_6$ is a semimetal and (2) the exchange-driven band splitting is the primary source of the drastic $ρ(T)$ and $ω_{p}^{2}$ changes at T $<$ T$_{c}$.

Reentrant spin glass transition in LuFe2O4

We have carried out a comprehensive investigation of magnetic properties of LuFe$_2$O$_4$, using AC susceptibility, DC magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic phase transition around $\sim$236 K was observed with DC magnetization and specific heat measurements, which is identified as a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition based on the nonlinear susceptibility data. Upon further cooling below this temperature, we also observed highly relaxational magnetic behavior: the DC magnetization exhibits history and time dependence, and the real and imaginary part of the AC susceptibility shows large frequency dependence. Dynamic scaling of the AC susceptibility data suggests that this low temperature phase can be described as a reentrant spin glass phase. We also discuss magnetic field dependence of the spin glass transition and aging, memory and rejuvenation effect below the glass transition temperature around 228 K.

Neutron scattering study on La1.9Ca1.1Cu2O6+delta and La1.85Sr0.15CaCu2O6+delta

We present neutron scattering data on two single crystals of the high temperature superconductor La2-x(Ca,Sr)xCaCu2O6+delta. The Ca0.1-doped crystal exhibits a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered ground state. In contrast, the Sr0.15-doped crystal exhibits short-range antiferromagnetic order as well as weak superconductivity. In both crystals antiferromagnetic correlations are commensurate; however, some results on the Ca0.1-doped crystal resemble those on the spin-glass phase of La2-xSrxCuO4, where magnetic correlations became incommensurate. In addition, both crystals show a structural transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic symmetry. Quite remarkably, the temperature dependence and correlation length of the magnetic order is very similar to that of the orthorhombic distortion. We attribute this behavior to an orthorhombic strain-induced inter-bilayer magnetic coupling, which triggers the antiferromagnetic order. The large size of the crystals made it also possible to study the magnetic diffuse scattering along rods perpendicular to the CuO2 planes in more detail. For comparison we show X-ray diffraction and magnetization data. In particular, for the Ca0.1-doped crystal these measurements reveal valuable information on the spin-glass transition as well as a second anomaly associated with the Neel transition.
