Longitudinal-field fidelity susceptibility analysis of the $J_1$-$J_2$ transverse-field Ising model around $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.5$

The square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ transverse-field (TF) Ising model was investigated with the exact diagonalization (ED) method. In order to analyze the TF-driven phase transition, we applied the longitudinal-field fidelity susceptibility $χ^{(h)}_F$, which is readily evaluated via the ED scheme. Here, the longitudinal field couples with the absolute value of the magnetic moment $|M|$ rather than the raw $M$ so that the remedied fidelity susceptibility exhibits a peak around the critical point; note that the spontaneous magnetization does not appear for the finite-size systems. As a preliminary survey, the modified fidelity susceptibility $χ^{(h)}_F$ is applied to the analysis of criticality for $J_2=0$, where a number of preceding results are available. Thereby, properly scaling the distance from the multi-criticality, $η=0.5-J_2$, the $χ^{(h)}_F$ data were cast into the crossover-scaling formula, and the multi-critical exponent for $χ_F^{(h)}$ is estimated. The result is cross-checked by the numerically evaluated $β$-function behavior.

Criticality of the excess energy cost due to the unit-flux-quantum external field for the $(2+1)$D superfluid-insulator transition

The two-dimensional ($2$D) spin-$S=1$ $XY$ model was investigated numerically as a realization of the $(2+1)$D superfluid-Mott-insulator (SF-MI) transition. The interaction parameters are extended so as to suppress corrections to finite-size scaling. Thereby, the external field of a unit flux quantum ($Φ=2π$) is applied to the 2D cluster by incorporating the phase factor $e^{iϕ_{ij}}$ ($ϕ_{ij}$: gauge angle between the $i$ and $j$ sites) into the hopping amplitudes. Taking the advantage in that the exact-diagonalization method allows us to treat such a complex-valued matrix element, we evaluated the excess energy cost $ΔE(2π)$ due to the magnetic flux $Φ=2π$ explicitly in the SF ($XY$) phase. As a result, we found that the amplitude ratio $ρ_s / ΔE(2π)$ ($ρ_s$: spin stiffness) makes sense in proximity to the critical point, exhibiting a notable plateau in the SF-phase side. The plateau height is estimated, and compared to the related studies.

Fidelity-susceptibility analysis of the honeycomb-lattice Ising antiferromagnet under the imaginary magnetic field

The honeycomb-lattice Ising antiferromagnet subjected to the imaginary magnetic field $H=iθT /2$ with the "topological" angle $θ$ and temperature $T$ was investigated numerically. In order to treat such a complex-valued statistical weight, we employed the transfer-matrix method. As a probe to detect the order-disorder phase transition, we resort to an extended version of the fidelity $F$, which makes sense even for such a non-hermitian transfer matrix. As a preliminary survey, for an intermediate value of $θ$, we investigated the phase transition via the fidelity susceptibility $χ_F^{(θ)}$. The fidelity susceptibility $χ_F^{(θ)}$ exhibits a notable signature for the criticality as compared to the ordinary quantifiers such as the magnetic susceptibility. Thereby, we analyze the end-point singularity of the order-disorder phase boundary at $θ=π$. We cast the $χ_F^{(θ)}$ data into the crossover-scaling formula with $δθ= π-θ$ scaled carefully. Our result for the crossover exponent $ϕ$ seems to differ from the mean-field and square-lattice values, suggesting that the lattice structure renders subtle influences as to the multi-criticality at $θ=π$.

Imaginary-field-driven phase transition for the $2$D Ising antiferromagnet: A fidelity-susceptibility approach

The square-lattice Ising antiferromagnet subjected to the imaginary magnetic field $H=i θT /2 $ with the "topological" angle $θ$ and temperature $T$ was investigated by means of the transfer-matrix method. Here, as a probe to detect the order-disorder phase transition, we adopt an extended version of the fidelity susceptibility $χ_F^{(θ)}$, which makes sense even for such a non-hermitian transfer matrix. As a preliminary survey, for an intermediate value of $θ$, we examined the finite-size-scaling behavior of $χ_F^{(θ)}$, and found a pronounced signature for the criticality; note that the magnetic susceptibility exhibits a weak (logarithmic) singularity at the Néel temperature. Thereby, we turn to the analysis of the power-law singularity of the phase boundary at $θ=π$. With $θ-π$ scaled properly, the $χ_F^{(θ)}$ data are cast into the crossover scaling formula, indicating that the phase boundary is shaped concavely. Such a feature makes a marked contrast to that of the mean-field theory.

Critical behavior of the Higgs- and Goldstone-mass gaps for the two-dimensional S=1 XY model

Spectral properties for the two-dimensional quantum S=1 XY model were investigated with the exact diagonalization method. In the symmetry-broken phase, there appear the massive Higgs and massless Goldstone excitations, which correspond to the longitudinal and transverse modes of the spontaneous magnetic moment, respectively. The former excitation branch is embedded in the continuum of the latter, and little attention has been paid to the details, particularly, in proximity to the critical point. The finite-size-scaling behavior is improved by extending the interaction parameters. An analysis of the critical amplitude ratio for these mass gaps is made.

Deconfined criticality for the two-dimensional quantum S=1-spin model with the three-spin and biquadratic interactions

The criticality between the nematic and valence-bond-solid (VBS) phases was investigated for the two-dimensional quantum S=1-spin model with the three-spin and biquadratic interactions by means of the numerical diagonalization method. It is expected that the criticality belongs to a novel universality class, the so-called deconfined criticality, accompanied with unconventional critical indices. In this paper, we incorporate the three-spin interaction, and adjust the (redundant) interaction parameter so as to optimize the finite-size behavior. Treating the finite-size cluster with N \le 20 spins, we estimate the correlation-length critical exponent as ν=0.88 (3).

Universal critical behavior of the two-magnon-bound-state mass gap for the (2+1)-dimensional Ising model

The two-magnon-bound-state mass gap m_2 for the two-dimensional quantum Ising model was investigated by means of the numerical diagonalization method; the low-lying spectrum is directly accessible via the numerical diagonalization method. It has been claimed that the ratio m_2/m_1 (m_1: one-magnon mass gap) is a universal constant in the vicinity of the critical point. Aiming to suppress corrections to scaling (lattice artifact), we consider the spin-S=1 Ising model with finely-adjusted extended interactions. The simulation result for the finite-size cluster with N \le 20 spins indicates the mass-gap ratio m_2/m_1=1.84(1).

Critical behavior of the fidelity susceptibility for the d=2 transverse-field Ising model

The overlap (inner product) between the ground-state eigenvectors with proximate interaction parameters, the so-called fidelity, plays a significant role in the quantum-information theory. In this paper, the critical behavior of the fidelity susceptibility is investigated for the two-dimensional tranverse-field (quantum) Ising model by means of the numerical diagonalization method. In order to treat a variety of system sizes N=12,14,...,32, we adopt the screw-boundary condition. Finite-size artifacts (scaling corrections) of the fidelity susceptibility appear to be suppressed, as compared to those of the Binder parameter. As a result, we estimate the fidelity-susceptibility critical exponent as α_F =0.715(20).

Criticalities of the transverse- and longitudinal-field fidelity susceptibilities for the d=2 quantum Ising model

The inner product between the ground-state eigenvectors with proximate interaction parameters, namely, the fidelity, plays a significant role in the quantum dynamics. In this paper, the critical behaviors of the transverse- and longitudinal-field fidelity susceptibilities for the d=2 quantum (transverse-field) Ising model are investigated by means of the numerical diagonalization method; the former susceptibility has been investigated rather extensively. The critical exponents for these fidelity susceptibilities are estimated as α^{(t)}_F=0.752(24) and α^{(h)}_F=1.81(13), respectively. These indices are independent, and suffice for obtaining conventional critical indices such as ν=0.624(12) and γ=1.19(13).

Deconfined-critical behavior of the VBS- and nematic-order parameters for the spatially anisotropic S=1-spin model

The phase transition between the valence-bond-solid (VBS) and nematic phases, the so-called deconfined criticality, was investigated for the quantum S=1-spin model on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice with the biquadratic interaction by means of the numerical diagonalization method. We calculated both VBS- and nematic-order parameters, aiming to clarify the nature of this transition from complementary viewpoints. Simulating the clusters with N \le 20 spins, we estimate the correlation-length critical exponent as ν=0.95(14). We also calculated Fisher's exponent (anomalous dimension) for each order parameter.

Neel-VBS phase boundary of the extended J_1-J_2 model with biquadratic interaction

The J_1-J_2 model with the biquadratic (plaquette-four-spin) interaction was simulated with the numerical-diagonalization method. Some limiting cases of this model have been investigated thoroughly. Taking the advantage of the extended parameter space, we survey the phase boundary separating the N'eel and valence-bond-solid phases. According to the deconfined-criticality scenario, the singularity of this phase boundary is continuous, accompanied with unconventional critical indices. Diagonalizing the finite-size cluster with N \le 36 spins, we observe a signature of continuous phase transition. Our tentative estimate for the correlation-length critical exponent is ν=1.1(3). In order to elucidate a non-local character of criticality, we evaluated the Roomany-Wyld βfunction around the critical point.

d=2 transverse-field Ising model under the screw-boundary condition: An optimization of the screw pitch

A length-N spin chain with the \sqrt{N}(=v)-th neighbor interaction is identical to a two-dimensional (d=2) model under the screw-boundary (SB) condition. The SB condition provides a flexible scheme to construct a d\ge2 cluster from an arbitrary number of spins; the numerical diagonalization combined with the SB condition admits a potential applicability to a class of systems intractable with the quantum Monte Carlo method due to the negative-sign problem. However, the simulation results suffer from characteristic finite-size corrections inherent in SB. In order to suppress these corrections, we adjust the screw pitch v(N) so as to minimize the excitation gap for each N. This idea is adapted to the transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice with N\le32 spins. As a demonstration, the correlation-length critical exponent $ν$ is analyzed in some detail.

Deconfined criticality for the S=1 spin model on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice

The quantum S=1 spin model on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice is investigated numerically. The nematic and valence-bond-solid (VBS) phases are realized by adjusting the spatial anisotropy and the biquadratic interaction. The phase transition between the nematic and VBS phases is expected to be a continuous one with unconventional critical indices (deconfined criticality). The geometrical character (spatial anisotropy) is taken into account by imposing the screw-boundary condition (Novotny's method). Diagonalizing the finite-size cluster with N \le 20 spins, we observe a clear indication of continuous phase transition. The correlation-length critical exponent is estimated as ν=0.92(10).

Criticality of the (2+1)-dimensional S=1 transverse-field Ising model with extended interactions: Suppression of corrections to scaling

The criticality of the (2+1)-dimensional S=1 transverse-field Ising model is investigated with the numerical diagonalization method. The scaling behavior is improved by tuning the coupling-constant parameters; the S=1 spin model allows us to incorporate a variety of interactions such as the single-ion anisotropy and the biquadratic interactions. Simulating the clusters with N=6,8,...,20 spins, we estimate the critical indices as 1/ν=1.586(6) and η=0.034(4).

Crumpling transition of the triangular lattice without open edges: effect of a modified folding rule

Folding of the triangular lattice in a discrete three-dimensional space is investigated by means of the transfer-matrix method. This model was introduced by Bowick and co-workers as a discretized version of the polymerized membrane in thermal equilibrium. The folding rule (constraint) is incompatible with the periodic-boundary condition, and the simulation has been made under the open-boundary condition. In this paper, we propose a modified constraint, which is compatible with the periodic-boundary condition; technically, the restoration of translational invariance leads to a substantial reduction of the transfer-matrix size. Treating the cluster sizes L \le 7, we analyze the singularities of the crumpling transitions for a wide range of the bending rigidity K. We observe a series of the crumpling transitions at K=0.206(2), -0.32(1), and -0.76(10). At each transition point, we estimate the latent heat as Q=0.356(30), 0.08(3), and 0.05(5), respectively.

Finite-size scaling of the d=5 Ising model embedded in the cylindrical geometry: An influence of the hyperscaling violation

Finite-size scaling (FSS) of the five-dimensional (d=5) Ising model is investigated numerically. Because of the hyperscaling violation in d>4, FSS of the d=5 Ising model no longer obeys the conventional scaling relation. Rather, it is expected that the FSS behavior depends on the geometry of the embedding space (boundary condition). In this paper, we consider the cylindrical geometry, and explore its influence on the correlation length ξ=L^Ωf(εL^{y^*_t}, H L^{y^*_h}) with system size L, reduced temperature ε, and magnetic field H; the indices, y^*_{t,h}, and Ω, characterize FSS. For that purpose, we employed the transfer-matrix method with Novotny's technique, which enables us to treat an arbitrary (integral) number of spins N=8,10, ..., 28; note that conventionally, N is restricted in N(=L^{d-1})=16,81,256,.... As a result, we estimate the scaling indices as Ω=1.40(15), y^*_t=2.8(2), and y^*_h=4.3(1). Additionally, under postulating Ω=4/3, we arrive at y^*_t=2.67(10) and y^*_h=4.0(2). These indices differ from the naively expected ones, Ω=1, y^*_t=2 and y^*_h=3. Rather, our data support the generic formulas, Ω=(d-1)/3, y^*_t=2(d-1)/3, and y^*_h=d-1, advocated for the cylindrical geometry in d \ge 4.

Third Neighbor Correlators of Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We exactly evaluate the third neighbor correlator <S_j^z S_{j+3}^z> and all the possible non-zero correlators <S^{alpha}_j S^{beta}_{j+1} S^{gamma}_{j+2} S^{delta}_{j+3}> of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg $XXX$ antiferromagnet in the ground state without magnetic field. All the correlators are expressed in terms of certain combinations of logarithm ln2, the Riemann zeta function zeta(3), zeta(5) with rational coefficients. The results accurately coincide with the numerical ones obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group method and the numerical diagonalization.

Random-field-driven phase transitions in the ground state of the S=1 XXZ spin chain

Ground-state of the S=1 XXZ spin chain under the influence of the random magnetic field is studied by means of the exact-diagonalization method. The S=1/2 counterpart has been investigated extensively so far. The easy-plane area, including the Haldane and the XY phases, is considered. The area suffers significantly from the magnitude of the constituent spin. Destruction of the Haldane state is observed at a critical strength of the random field, which is comparable to the magnitude of the Haldane gap. This transition is characterized by the disappearance of the string order. The XY region continues until at a critical randomness, at which a transition of the KT-universality class occurs. These features are contrasted with those of the S=1/2 counterpart.

Numerical Analysis of the Bond-Random Antiferromagnetic S=1 Heisenberg Chain

Ground state of the bond-random antiferromagnetic S=1 Heisenberg chain with the biquadratic interaction -β\sum_i(S_i S_i+1)^2 is investigated by means of the exact-diagonalization method and the finite-size-scaling analysis. It is shown that the Haldane phase β\sim0 persists against the randomness; namely, no randomness-driven phase transition is observed until at a point of extremely-broad-bond distribution. We found that in the Haldane phase, the magnetic correlation length is kept hardly changed. These results are contrastive to those of an analytic theory which predicts a second-order phase transition between the Haldane and the random-singlet phases at a certain critical randomness.

Effect of the hole doping into the Haldane-gap state on the one-dimensional $S=1$ $t$-$J$ model

The ground state and excitation spectra of the $S=1$ Heisenberg spin chain with hole hopping are investigated by means of the numerical-diagonalization method and by the help of the Zhang-Arovas picture. As for the charge sector, two phases are found. It is shown that in the weak-hopping region, a phase separation occurs, while in the strong-hopping region, the system is in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase. Irrespective of the presence of the spin gap, the present phase diagram is similar to that reported for the $S=1/2$ $t$-$J$ chain with gapless spin excitation rather than to that for the magnetically-frustrated $t$-$J$ chain with spin gap. For the spin sector, the string correlation is found to develop withstanding the hole doping except in a region, whose region is characterized by a generalized string correlation. This remains an open question to be studied in future.

Scaling Theory of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladder Models

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on multi-leg ladders is investigated. Criticality of the ground-state transition is explored by means of finite-size scaling. The ladders with an even number of legs and those with an odd number of legs are distinguished clearly. In the former, the energy gap opens up as $ΔE\sim{J_\perp}$, where ${J_\perp}$ is the strength of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. In the latter, the critical phase with the central charge $c=1$ extends over the whole region of ${J_\perp}>0$.
