Role of Disorder in Governing the Magnetic Properties of Cu2IrO3

Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is a honeycomb iridate which has been studied recently as a candidate Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Its magnetic ground state however, has been reported to be quantum disordered, spin glassy, or magnetically ordered depending on synthesis details. We have prepared a Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ sample with large antisite disorder and studied in detail its structure (global and local), charge states, and thermodynamic properties to try to quantify and characterize the disorder and its connection to the magnetic ground state. X-ray diffraction, Extended x-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS) and X-ray pair distribution function analysis revealed a large site disorder ($\sim$25\%), while XPS and XANES reveal mixed valence of Cu and Ir following Cu$^{1+}$ + Ir$^{4+}$ $\rightarrow$ Cu$^{2+}$ + Ir$^{3+}$. This combination of site disorder and charge redistribution generates competing antiferromagnetic interactions and magnetic frustration, resulting in dynamically fluctuating AFM clusters near 80K that freeze below 29K. These results demonstrate the crucial role of synthesis dependent disorder in determining the magnetic ground state of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$.

Observation of Weak Anti-localization in thin films of the Topological Semimetal Candidate PdSb$_{2}$

We report results of a magneto-transport study on thin films of the topological semi-metal candidate PdSb$_{2}$ (PS). We observe a positive correction to magneto-conductivity at low temperatures, which is a signature of weak anti-localization (WAL). We analyze the WAL data within the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) theory and extract the dephasing length (L$_ϕ$) whose temperature dependence reveals the various phase relaxation mechanisms. From the WAL effect, we also extract $α$ (the number of transport channels). The evolution of $α$ with temperature and film thickness reflects how the coupling between different conducting channels (Topological surface channels and bulk channels) changes. Additionally, the electron-electron interaction (EEI) effect was observed in the temperature-dependent conductivity at low temperatures. From the EEI effect, we get an alternate estimate of the number of transport channels and obtain a value similar to that obtained from the analysis of the WAL effect. This suggests that in disordered films, the EEI effect can be used to get information about the coupling of the topological surface states with each other and with bulk states.

Unusual Magnetotransport from two dimensional Dirac Fermions in Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$

Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ has been proposed to be topologically non-trivial in nature. However, evidence of its non-trivial behavior is still unexplored. We report the growth and magneto-transport study of Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ thin films, revealing for the first time the contribution of two-dimensional (2D) topological surface states. We observe exceptional non-saturated linear magnetoresistance which results from Dirac fermions inhabiting the lowest Landau level in the quantum limit. The transverse magnetoresistance changes from a semi-classical weak-field $B^{2}$ dependence to a high-field $B$ dependence at a critical field $B^{\star}$. It is found that $B^{\star} \propto T^2$, which is expected from the Landau level splitting of a linear energy dispersion. In addition, the magnetoconductivity shows signatures of 2D weak anti-localization (WAL). These novel magnetotransport signatures evince the presence of 2D Dirac fermions in Pd$_{3}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ thin films.

Emergence of weak pyrochlore phase and signature of field induced spin ice ground state in Dy$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$; x = 0, 0.15, 0.3

The pyrochlore oxides Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ are well studied spin ice systems and have shown the evidences of magnetic monopole excitations. Unlike these, Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is reported to crystallize in a distorted fluorite structure. We present here the magnetic and heat capacity studies of La substituted Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our findings suggest the absence of spin ice state in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ but the emergence of the magnetic field induced spin freezing near T $\approx$ 10 K in ac susceptibility measurements which is similar to Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The magnetic heat capacity of Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ shows a shift in the peak position from 1.2 K in zero field to higher temperatures in the magnetic field, with the corresponding decrease in the magnetic entropy. The low temperature magnetic entropy at 5 kOe field is Rln2 - (1/2)Rln(3/2) which is same as for the spin ice state. Substitution of non-magnetic, isovalent La$^{3+}$ for Dy$^{3+}$ gradually induces the structural change from highly disordered fluorite to weakly ordered pyrochlore phase. The La$^{3+}$ substituted compounds with less distorted pyrochlore phase show the spin freezing at lower field which strengthens further on the application of magnetic field. Our results suggest that the spin ice state can be stabilized in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ either by slowing down of the spin dynamics or by strengthening the pyrochlore phase by suitable substitution in the system.

Robust spin liquid state against magnetic-dilution in the bi-layer Kagome material Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$

Recently, the bi-layer Kagome lattice material Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ has been shown to be a quasi-two-dimensional quantum spin liquid (QSL) where the frustration arises from a balance between competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange within a bi-layer. In an attempt to understand what happens when this balance is disturbed, we present a magnetic dilution study. Specifically, we have synthesized Ca$_{10}$(Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$)$_7$O$_{28}$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.5) where magnetic Cr$^{5+}$ ($S = 1/2$) is partially replaced by non-magnetic V$^{5+}$ ($S = 0$). We also synthesized the fully non-magnetic isostructural material Ca$_{10}$V$_7$O$_{27.5}$. We report a detailed structural, magnetic and heat capacity study on these materials. A monotonic increase in the unit cell parameters is found for the Ca$_{10}$(Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$)$_7$O$_{28}$ materials with increasing $x$. An order of magnitude decrease in the Curie-Weiss temperature from $4$ to $0.5$~ K is found for the partial V substituted samples, which indicates a relative increase in antiferromagnetic exchange with increase in V content. However, despite this change in the relative balance in the exchange interactions and the large disorder introduced, no magnetic ordering or spin-glass state is observed down to $2$~K in the V substituted samples. The QSL state of the parent compound thus seems surprisingly robust against these large perturbations.

A magnetocaloric study on the series of 3d-metal chromites ACr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ where A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn

The 3d-metal chromites ACr$_2$O$_4$ where A is a magnetic ion, show the paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase transition at T$_C$ while for non-magnetic A-site ion, ACr$_2$O$_4$ show paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at T$_N$. In this report, we present the detailed study of magnetic and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the 3d-metal chromites ACr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ (where A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) near T$_C$ and T$_N$. We find the magnitude of MCE (-$Δ$S$_M$) decreases on decreasing the magnetic moment of A-site ion with an exception for CuCr$_{2}$O$_{4} $. Additionally, to know more about the order and nature of phase transition, we have made a scaling analysis of (-$Δ$S$_{M}$) for all the chromites across the phase transition temperatures T$_C$ and T$_N$.

Planar Hall Effect and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in a polar-polar interface of LaVO$_3$-KTaO$_3$ with strong spin-orbit coupling

Among the perovskite oxide family, KTaO$_3$ (KTO) has recently attracted considerable interest as a possible system for the realization of the Rashba effect. In this work, we improvise a novel conducting interface by juxtaposing KTO with another insulator, namely LaVO$_3$ (LVO) and report planar Hall effect (PHE) and anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) measurements. This interface exhibits a signature of strong spin-orbit coupling. Our experimental observation of two fold AMR at low magnetic fields can be intuitively understood using a phenomenological theory for a Rashba spin-split system. At high fields ($\sim$8 T), we see a two fold to four fold transition in the AMR that could not be explained using only Rashba spin-split energy spectra. We speculate that it might be generated through an intricate process arising from the interplay between strong spin-orbit coupling, broken inversion symmetery, relativistic conduction electron and possible uncompensated localized vanadium spins.

Spectroscopic signature of two superconducting gaps and their unusual field dependence in RuB$_2$

Recently RuB$_2$ was shown to be a possible two-gap, type-I superconductor. Temperature dependent heat capacity measurements revealed a two-gap superconducting ground state while magnetic field dependent magnetization measurements indicated surprising type-I superconductivity with a very low experimental critical field ($H_c$) $\sim$ 120 Oe. In this paper, we report direct spectroscopic evidence of two superconducting energy gaps in RuB$_2$. We have measured scanning tunnelling spectra exhibiting signature of two gaps on different grains of polycrystalline RuB$_2$, possibly originating from multiple bands. Analysis of the temperature dependent tunnelling spectra revealed that the gaps from different bands evolve differently with temperature before disappearing simultaneously at a single $T_c$. Interestingly, our experiments also reveal that the gaps in quasiparticle density of states survive up to magnetic fields much higher than the bulk $H_c$ and they evolve smoothly with field, unlike what is expected for a type-I superconductor, indicating the existence of a ``mixed state".

Physical realization of a quantum spin liquid based on a novel frustration mechanism

Unlike conventional magnets where the magnetic moments are partially or completely static in the ground state, in a quantum spin liquid they remain in collective motion down to the lowest temperatures. The importance of this state is that it is coherent and highly entangled without breaking local symmetries. Such phenomena is usually sought in simple lattices where antiferromagnetic interactions and/or anisotropies that favor specific alignments of the magnetic moments are "frustrated" by lattice geometries incompatible with such order e.g. triangular structures. Despite an extensive search among such compounds, experimental realizations remain very few. Here we describe the investigation of a novel, unexplored magnetic system consisting of strong ferromagnetic and weaker antiferromagnetic isotropic interactions as realized by the compound Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. Despite its exotic structure we show both experimentally and theoretically that it displays all the features expected of a quantum spin liquid including coherent spin dynamics in the ground state and the complete absence of static magnetism.

Raman Signatures of Strong Kitaev Exchange Correlations in (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ : Experiments and Theory

Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystals of (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.05$ and $0.15$) show a polarization independent broad band at $\sim $~2750 cm$^{-1}$ with a large band-width $\sim 1800$~cm$^{-1}$. For Na$_2$IrO$_3$ the broad band is seen for temperatures $ \leq 200$~K and persists inside the magnetically ordered state. For Li doped samples, the intensity of this mode increases, shifts to lower wave-numbers and persists to higher temperatures. Such a mode has recently been predicted (Knolle et.al.) as a signature of the Kitaev spin liquid. We assign the observation of the broad band to be a signature of strong Kitaev-exchange correlations. The fact that the broad band persists even inside the magnetically ordered state suggests that dynamically fluctuating moments survive even below $T_{N}$. This is further supported by our mean field calculations. The Raman response calculated in mean field theory shows that the broad band predicted for the spin liquid state survives in the magnetically ordered state near the zigzag-spin liquid phase boundary. A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter to be $J_K\approx 57$~meV.

Spin liquid like Raman signatures in hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Combining Raman scattering measurements with mean field calculations of the Raman response we show that Kitaev-like magnetic exchange is dominant in the hyperkagome iridate Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$. In the measurements we observe a broad Raman band at $\sim$~3500 cm$^{-1}$ with a band-width $\sim 1700$~cm$^{-1}$. Calculations of the Raman response of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the hyperkagome lattice shows that the experimental observations are consistent with calculated Raman response where Kitaev exchange interaction ($J_K$) is much larger than the Heisenberg term J$_1$ ($J_1/J_K \sim 0.1$). A comparison with the theoretical model gives an estimate of the Kitaev exchange interaction parameter.

The H-T and P-T phase diagram of the superconducting phase in Pd:Bi$_2$Te$_3$

We study the magnetic field vs temperature ($H$--$T$) and pressure vs temperature ($P$--$T$) phase diagram of the $T_c \approx 5.5$~K superconducting phase in Pd$_x$Bi$_2$Te$_3$ ($x \approx 1$) using electrical resistivity versus temperature measurements at various applied magnetic fields ($H$) and magnetic susceptibility versus temperature measurements at various applied magnetic fields ($H$) and pressure ($P$). The $H$--$T$ phase diagram has an initial upward curvature as observed in some unconventional superconductors. The critical field extrapolated to $T = 0$~K is $H_c (0) \approx 6$--$10$~kOe. The $T_c$ is suppressed approximately linearly with pressure at a rate $dT_c/dP \approx -0.28$~K/GPa.

Tracking local magnetic dynamics via high-energy charge excitations in a relativistic Mott insulator

We use time- and energy-resolved optical spectroscopy to investigate the coupling of electron-hole excitations to the magnetic environment in the relativistic Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We show that, on the picosecond timescale, the photoinjected electron-hole pairs delocalize on the hexagons of the Ir lattice via the formation of quasi-molecular orbital (QMO) excitations and the exchange of energy with the short-range-ordered zig-zag magnetic background. The possibility of mapping the magnetic dynamics, which is characterized by typical frequencies in the THz range, onto high-energy (1-2 eV) charge excitations provides a new platform to investigate, and possibly control, the dynamics of magnetic interactions in correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, even in the presence of complex magnetic phases.

Direct Evidence for Dominant Bond-directional Interactions in a Honeycomb Lattice Iridate Na2IrO3

Heisenberg interactions are ubiquitous in magnetic materials and have been prevailing in modeling and designing quantum magnets. Bond-directional interactions offer a novel alternative to Heisenberg exchange and provide the building blocks of the Kitaev model, which has a quantum spin liquid (QSL) as its exact ground state. Honeycomb iridates, A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li), offer potential realizations of the Kitaev model, and their reported magnetic behaviors may be interpreted within the Kitaev framework. However, the extent of their relevance to the Kitaev model remains unclear, as evidence for bond-directional interactions remains indirect or conjectural. Here, we present direct evidence for dominant bond-directional interactions in antiferromagnetic Na2IrO3 and show that they lead to strong magnetic frustration. Diffuse magnetic x-ray scattering reveals broken spin-rotational symmetry even above Neel temperature, with the three spin components exhibiting nano-scale correlations along distinct crystallographic directions. This spin-space and real-space entanglement directly manifests the bond-directional interactions, provides the missing link to Kitaev physics in honeycomb iridates, and establishes a new design strategy toward frustrated magnetism.

Evolution of magnetic, transport, and thermal properties in Na$_{4-x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$

The hyper-kagome material Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is a three-dimensional spin-liquid candidate proximate to a quantum critical point (QCP). We present a comprehensive study of the structure, magnetic susceptibility $χ$, heat capacity $C$, and electrical transport on polycrystalline samples of the doped hyper-kagome material Na$_{4-x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$ ($x \approx 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.7)$. Materials with $x\leq 0.3$ are found to be Mott insulators with strong antiferromagnetic interactions and no magnetic ordering down to $T = 2$ K\@. All samples show irreversibility below $T \approx 6$ K between the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization measured in low fields ($H = 0.050$ T) suggesting a frozen low temperature state although no corresponding anomaly is seen in the heat capacity. The $x = 0.7$ sample shows $ρ(T)$ which weakly increases with decreasing temperature $T$, nearly $T$ independent $χ$, a linear in $T$ contribution to the low temperature $C$, and a Wilson ratio $R_W \approx 7$ suggesting anomalous semi-metallic behavior.

Fragile magnetic order in the honeycomb lattice Iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_3$ revealed by magnetic impurity doping

We report the structure, magnetic, and thermal property measurements on single crystalline and polycrystalline samples of Ru substituted honeycomb lattice iridate Na$_2$Ir$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_3$ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5). The evolution of magnetism in Na$_2$Ir$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_3$ has been studied using dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The parent compound Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is a spin-orbit driven Mott insulator with magnetic order of reduced moments below $T_N = 15$~K\@. In the Ru substituted samples the antiferromagnetic long range state is replaced by a spin glass like state even for the smallest substitution suggesting that the magnetic order in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is extremely fragile. We argue that these behaviors indicate the importance of nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange in the parent Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Additionally, all samples show insulating electrical transport.

Spin waves and revised crystal structure of honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2IrO3, a candidate for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice. We observe spin-wave excitations below 5 meV with a dispersion that can be accounted for by including substantial further-neighbor exchanges that stabilize zig-zag magnetic order. The onset of long-range magnetic order below 15.3 K is confirmed via the observation of oscillations in zero-field muon-spin rotation experiments. Combining single-crystal diffraction and density functional calculations we propose a revised crystal structure model with significant departures from the ideal 90 deg Ir-O-Ir bonds required for dominant Kitaev exchange.

Magnetic excitation spectrum of Na2IrO3 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The low energy excitations in Na2IrO3 have been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). A magnetic excitation branch can be resolved, whose dispersion reaches a maximum energy of about 35 meV at the Γ-point. The momentum dependence of the excitation energy is much larger along the Γ-X direction compared to that along the Γ-Y direction. The observed dispersion relation is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction based on Heisenberg-Kitaev model. At high temperatures, we find large contributions from lattice vibrational modes to our RIXS spectra, suggesting that a strong electron-lattice coupling is present in Na2IrO3.

Spin liquid close to a quantum critical point in Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is a candidate material for a 3-dimensional quantum spin-liquid on the hyperkagome lattice. We present thermodynamic measurements of heat capacity $C$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ on high quality polycrystalline samples of Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ down to $T = 500$ mK and $75$ mK, respectively. Absence of long-range magnetic order down to $T = 75$ mK strongly supports claims of a spin-liquid ground state. The constant magnetic susceptibility $χ$ below $T \approx 25$ K and the presence of a small but finite linear-$T$ term in $C(T)$ suggest the presence of gapless spin excitations. Additionally, the magnetic Gr$\ddot{\rm{u}}$neisen ratio shows a divergence as $T \rightarrow 0$ K and a scaling behavior which clearly demonstrates that Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is situated close to a zero-field QCP.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

Na2IrO3 as a spin-orbit-assisted antiferromagnetic insulator with a 340 meV gap

We study Na2IrO3 by ARPES, optics, and band structure calculations in the local-density approximation (LDA). The weak dispersion of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold highlights the importance of structural distortions and spin-orbit coupling (SO) in driving the system closer to a Mott transition. We detect an insulating gap Δ_gap = 340 meV which, at variance with a Slater-type description, is already open at 300 K and does not show significant temperature dependence even across T_N ~ 15 K. An LDA analysis with the inclusion of SO and Coulomb repulsion U reveals that, while the prodromes of an underlying insulating state are already found in LDA+SO, the correct gap magnitude can only be reproduced by LDA+SO+U, with U = 3 eV. This establishes Na2IrO3 as a novel type of Mott-like correlated insulator in which Coulomb and relativistic effects have to be treated on an equal footing.

Relevance of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model for the honeycomb lattice iridates A_2IrO_3

Combining thermodynamic measurements with theoretical density functional and thermodynamic calculations we demonstrate that the honeycomb lattice iridates A2IrO3 (A = Na, Li) are magnetically ordered Mott insulators where the magnetism of the effective spin-orbital S = 1/2 moments can be captured by a Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) model with Heisenberg interactions beyond nearest-neighbor exchange. Experimentally, we observe an increase of the Curie-Weiss temperature from θ= -125 K for Na2IrO3 to θ= -33 K for Li2IrO3, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature remains roughly the same T_N = 15 K for both materials. Using finite-temperature functional renormalization group calculations we show that this evolution of θ, T_N, the frustration parameter f = θ/T_N, and the zig-zag magnetic ordering structure suggested for both materials by density functional theory can be captured within this extended HK model. Combining our experimental and theoretical results, we estimate that Na2IrO3 is deep in the magnetically ordered regime of the HK model (α\approx 0.25), while Li2IrO3 appears to be close to a spin-liquid regime (0.6 < α< 0.7).

Long range magnetic ordering in Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure of the honeycomb lattice magnet Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a strong candidate for a realization of a gapless spin-liquid. Using resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Ir L$_3$-edge, we find 3D long range antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=13.3 K. From the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic Bragg peak, the ordered moment is determined to be predominantly along the {\it a}-axis. Combining the experimental data with first principles calculations, we propose that the most likely spin structure is a novel "zig-zag" structure.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in BaMn2As2: A Case Study of the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg Model

BaMn2As2 is unique among BaT2As2 compounds crystallizing in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, which contain stacked square lattices of 3d transition metal T atoms, since it has an insulating large-moment (3.9 muB/Mn) G-type (checkerboard) antiferromagnetic AF ground state. We report measurements of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T from 300 to 1000 K of single crystals of BaMn2As2, and magnetic inelastic neutron scattering measurements at 8 K and 75As NMR measurements from 4 to 300 K of polycrystalline samples. The Neel temperature determined from the chi(T) measurements is TN = 618(3) K. The measurements are analyzed using the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model. Linear spin wave theory for G-type AF ordering and classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and molecular field theory calculations of chi(T) and of the magnetic heat capacity Cmag(T) are presented versus J1, J2 and Jc. We also obtain band theoretical estimates of the exchange couplings in BaMn2As2. From analyses of our chi(T), NMR, neutron scattering, and previously published heat capacity data for BaMn2As2 on the basis of the above theories for the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model and our band-theoretical results, our best estimates of the exchange constants in BaMn2As2 are J1 = 13 meV, J2/J1 = 0.3 and Jc/J1 = 0.1, which are all antiferromagnetic. From our classical Monte Carlo simulations of the G-type AF ordering transition, these exchange parameters predict TN = 640 K for spin S = 5/2, in close agreement with experiment. Using spin wave theory, we also utilize these exchange constants to estimate the suppression of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations for comparison with the observed value and again obtain S = 5/2 for the Mn spin.

Multi-gap superconductivity and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in single crystals of the layered boride OsB_2

Single crystals of superconducting OsB_2 [T_c = 2.10(5) K] have been grown using a Cu-B eutectic flux. We confirm that OsB_2 crystallizes in the reported orthorhombic structure (space group Pmmn) at room temperature. Both the normal and superconducting state properties of the crystals are studied using various techniques. Heat capacity versus temperature C(T) measurements yield the normal state electronic specific heat coefficient γ= 1.95(1) mJ/mol K^2 and the Debye temperature Θ_D = 539(2) K. The measured frequencies of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are in good agreement with those predicted by band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility χ(T,H), electrical resistivity ρ(T) and C(T,H) measurements (H is the magnetic field) demonstrate that OsB_2 is a bulk low-κ[κ(T_c) = 2(1)] Type-II superconductor that is intermediate between the clean and dirty limits [ξ(T=0)/\ell = 0.97)] with a small upper critical magnetic field H_c2(T = 0) = 186(4) Oe. The penetration depth is λ(T = 0) = 0.300 μm. An anomalous (not single-gap BCS) T dependence of λwas fitted by a two-gap model with Δ_1(T = 0)/k_BT_c = 1.9 and Δ_2(T = 0)/k_BT_c = 1.25, respectively. The discontinuity in the heat capacity at T_c, ΔC/γT_c = 1.32, is smaller than the weak-coupling BCS value of 1.43, consistent with the two-gap nature of the superconductivity in OsB_2. An anomalous increase in ΔC at T_c of unknown origin is found in finite H; e.g., ΔC/γT_c \approx 2.5 for H \approx 25 Oe.

Magnetic ordering in EuRh2As2 studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Element-specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigations were performed to determine the magnetic structure of Eu in EuRh2As2. In the temperature range from 46 K down to 6 K, an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (ICM)structure with a temperature dependent propagation vector (0 0 0.9) coexists with a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CM) structure. Angular-dependent measurements of the magnetic intensity indicate that the magnetic moments lie in the tetragonal basal plane and are ferromagnetically aligned within the a-b plane for both magnetic structures. The ICM structure is a spiral-like magnetic structure with a turn angle of 162 deg between adjacent Eu planes. In the CM structure, this angle is 180 deg. These results are consistent with band-structure calculations which indicate a strong sensitivity of the magnetic configuration on the Eu valence.

Magnetic, Thermal, and Transport Properties of Layered Arsenides BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2

The magnetic, thermal and transport properties of polycrystalline BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2 samples with the ThCr2Si2 structure were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), and heat capacity Cp(T) measurements. The temperature (T) dependence of rho indicates metallic character for both compounds with residual resistivity ratios rho(310 K)/rho(2 K) of 17 and 5 for the Ba and Sr compounds, respectively. The Cp(T) results reveal a low-T Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 4.9(1) and 4.1(1) mJ/mol K^2 and Debye temperature Θ_D = 271(7) K and 271(4) K for the Ba and Sr compounds, respectively. The chi (T) was found to be diamagnetic with a small absolute value for both compounds. No transitions were found for BaRu2As2 above 1.8 K. The chi(T) data for SrRu2As2 exhibit a cusp at \sim 200 K, possibly an indication of a structural and/or magnetic transition. We discuss the properties of BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2 in the context of other ThCr2Si2-type and ZrCuSiAs-type transition metal pnictides.

Magnetic, Transport, and Thermal Properties of Single Crystals of the Layered Arsenide BaMn2As2

Growth of BaMn2As2 crystals using both MnAs and Sn fluxes is reported. Room temperature crystallography, anisotropic isothermal magnetization M versus field H and magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T, electrical resistivity in the ab plane rho(T), and heat capacity C(T) measurements on the crystals were carried out. The tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure of BaMn2As2 is confirmed. After correction for traces of ferromagnetic MnAs impurity phase using M(H) isotherms, the inferred intrinsic chi(T) data of the crystals are anisotropic with chi_{ab}/chi_{c} \approx 7.5 at T = 2 K. The temperature dependences of the anisotropic chi data suggest that BaMn2As2 is a collinear antiferromagnet at room temperature with the easy axis along the c axis, and with an extrapolated Neel temperature T_N \sim 500 K. The rho(T) decreases with decreasing T below 310 K but then increases below \sim 50 K, suggesting that BaMn2As2 is a small band-gap semiconductor with an activation energy of order 0.03 eV. The C(T) data from 2 to 5 K are consistent with this insulating ground state, exhibiting a low temperature Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 0.0(4) mJ/mol K^2. The Debye temperature is determined from these data to be theta_D = 246(4) K. BaMn2As2 is a potential parent compound for ThCr2Si2-type superconductors.

Nature of the Magnetic Order in BaMn2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on a powder sample of BaMn2As2 over the temperature T range from 10 K to 675 K. These measurements demonstrate that this compound exhibits collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below the Neel temperature T_N = 625(1) K. The ordered moment mu = 3.88(4) mu_B/Mn at T = 10 K is oriented along the c axis and the magnetic structure is G-type, with all nearest-neighbor Mn moments antiferromagnetically aligned. The value of the ordered moment indicates that the oxidation state of Mn is Mn^{2+} with a high spin S = 5/2. The T dependence of mu suggests that the magnetic transition is second-order in nature. In contrast to the closely related AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) compounds, no structural distortion is observed in the magnetically ordered state of BaMn2As2.

Structure and magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of single crystal EuPd2Sb2

Single crystals of EuPd2Sb2 have been grown from PdSb self-flux. The properties of the single crystals have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M, electrical resistivity rho, Hall coefficient R_H, and heat capacity Cp measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. Single crystal x-ray diffraction studies confirmed that EuPd2Sb2 crystallizes in the CaBe2Ge2-type structure. The chi(T) measurements suggest antiferromagnetic ordering at 6.0 K with the easy axis or plane in the crystallographic ab plane. An additional transition occurs at 4.5 K that may be a spin reorientation transition. The Cp(T) data also show the two transitions at 6.1 K and 4.4 K, respectively, indicating the bulk nature of the transitions. The 4.4 K transition is suppressed below 1.8 K while the 6.1 K transition moves down to 3.3 K in H = 8 T. The rho(T) data show metallic behavior down to 1.8 K along with an anomaly at 5.5 K in zero field. The anomaly is suppressed to 2.7 K in an 8 T field. The R_H measurements indicated that the dominant charge carriers are electrons. The M(H) isotherms show three field-induced transitions at 2.75 T, 3.90 T, and 4.2 T magnetic fields parallel to the ab plane at 1.8 K. No transitions are observed in M(H) for fields parallel to the c axis.

Unusual Magnetic, Thermal, and Transport Behaviors of Single Crystal EuRh2As2

An antiferromagnetic transition is observed in single crystal EuRh2As2 at a high temperature T_N = 47 K compared to the ferromagnetic Weiss temperature theta = 12 K. We show that this is, surprisingly, consistent with mean field theory. A first-order field-induced magnetic transition is observed at T < T_N with an unusual temperature dependence of the transition field. A dramatic magnetic field-induced reduction of the electronic specific heat coefficient at 1.8-5.0 K by 38% at 9 T is observed. In addition, a strong positive magnetoresistance and a large change in the Hall coefficient occur below 25 K. Band structure calculations indicate that the Fermi energy lies on a steep edge of a narrow peak in the density of states.

Single crystal growth and physical properties of the layered arsenide BaRh_2As_2

Single crystals of BaRh_2As_2 have been synthesized from a Pb flux. We present the room temperature crystal structure, single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements as a function of temperature T, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χversus T, electrical resistivity in the ab-plane ρversus T, Hall coefficient versus T and magnetic field H, and heat capacity C versus T measurements on the crystals. The single crystal structure determination confirms that BaRh_2As_2 forms in the tetragonal ThCr_2Si_2 type structure (space group I4/mmm) with lattice parameters a = b = 4.0564(6)Åand c = 12.797(4) Å. Band structure calculations show that BaRh_2As_2 should be metallic with a small density of states at the Fermi energy N(E_ F) = 3.49 states/eV f.u. (where f.u. \equiv formula unit) for both spin directions. ρ(T) data in the ab-plane confirm that the material is indeed metallic with a residual resistivity ρ(2K) = 29 μΩcm, and with a residual resistivity ratio ρ(310K)/ρ(2K) = 5.3. The observed χ(T) is small (\sim 10^{-5} cm^3/mol) and weakly anisotropic with χ_{ab}/χ_ c \approx 2. The C(T) data indicate a small density of states at the Fermi energy with the low temperature Sommerfeld coefficient γ= 4.7(9) mJ/mol K^2. There are no indications of superconductivity, spin density wave, or structural transitions between 2K and 300K. We compare the calculated density of states versus energy of BaRh_2As_2 with that of BaFe_2As_2.

Magnetic and thermal properties of the S = 1/2 zig-zag spin-chain compound In2VO5

Static magnetic susceptibility χ, ac susceptibility χ_{ac} and specific heat C versus temperature T measurements on polycrystalline samples of In2VO5 and χand C versus T measurements on the isostructural, nonmagnetic compound In2TiO5 are reported. A Curie-Wiess fit to the χ(T) data above 175 K for In2VO5 indicates ferromagnetic exchange between V^{4+} (S = 1/2) moments. Below 150 K the χ(T) data deviate from the Curie-Weiss behavior but there is no signature of any long range magnetic order down to 1.8 K. There is a cusp at 2.8 K in the zero field cooled (ZFC) χ(T) data measured in a magnetic field of 100 Oe and the ZFC and field cooled (FC) data show a bifurcation below this temperature. The frequency dependence of the χ_{ac}(T) data indicate that below 3 K the system is in a spin-glass state. The difference ΔC between the heat capacity of In2VO5 and In2TiO5 shows a broad anomaly peaked at 130 K. The entropy upto 300 K is more than what is expected for S = 1/2 moments. The anomaly in ΔC and the extra entropy suggests that there may be a structural change below 130 K in In2VO5.

Singlet ground state in the spin-1/2 dimer compound Sr3Cr2O8

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat versus temperature measurements on polycrystalline samples of Sr3Cr2O8 and the isostructural, nonmagnetic compound Sr3V2O8 are reported. A Curie-Wiess fit to the high-temperature susceptibility data for Sr3Cr2O8 indicates that the Cr atoms are in the rare Cr^5+ (Spin S = 1/2) valence state as expected from the composition. The ground state was found to be a spin singlet with an excitation gap Delta/k_ B = 61.9(1) K to the magnetic triplet states, and a weak interdimer coupling of 6(2) K was inferred. The specific heat and susceptibility measurements on Sr3V2O8 reveal a phase transition at 110 K which is evidently a structural transition.

Superconducting and normal state properties of the layered boride OsB2

OsB_2 crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure (Pmmn) which contains alternate boron and osmium layers stacked along the c-axis. The boron layers consist of puckered hexagons as opposed to the flat graphite-like boron layers in MgB_2. OsB_2 is reported to become superconducting below 2.1 K. We report results of the dynamic and static magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, heat capacity and penetration depth measurements on arc-melted polycrystalline samples of OsB_2 to characterize its superconducting and normal state properties. These measurements confirmed that OsB_2 becomes a bulk superconductor below T_ c = 2.1 K. Our results indicate that OsB_2 is a moderate-coupling Type-II superconductor with an electron-phonon coupling constant λ_{ep} \approx 0.4 to 0.5, a small Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ\sim 1 to 2 and an upper critical magnetic field H_{c2}(0.5 K) \sim 420 Oe for an unannealed sample and H_{c2}(1 K) \sim 330 Oe for an annealed sample. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density n_{s}(T) for the unannealed sample is consistent with an s-wave superconductor with a slightly enhanced zero temperature gap Δ(0) = 1.9 k_{B}T_c and a zero temperature London penetration depth λ(0) = 0.38(2) μm. The n_{s}(T) data for the annealed sample shows deviations from the predictions of the single-band s-wave BCS model. The magnetic, transport and thermal properties in the normal state of isostructural and isoelectronic RuB_2, which is reported to become superconducting below 1.6 K, are also reported.
