RIXS observation of bond-directional nearest-neighbor excitations in the Kitaev material Na$_2$IrO$_3$

Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2's defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets. Bond-directional interactions imply the existence of bond-directional magnetic modes, predicted spin excitations that render crystallographically equivalent bonds magnetically inequivalent, which yet have remained elusive experimentally. Here we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering allows us to explicitly probe the bond-directional character of magnetic excitations. To do so, we use a scattering plane spanned by one bond and the corresponding spin component and scan a range of momentum transfer that encompasses multiple Brillouin zones. Applying this approach to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ we establish the different bond-directional characters of magnetic excitations at 10 meV and 45 meV. Combined with the observation of spin-spin correlations that are confined to a single bond, this experimentally validates the Kitaev character of exchange interactions long proposed for this material.

Divergent Thermal Expansion and Grüneisen Ratio in a Quadrupolar Kondo Metal

We report on the low-temperature thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the single-impurity quadrupolar Kondo candidate Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$. In the dilute limit, we find a quadrupolar strain that possesses a singular dependence on temperature $T$, $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{u}} \sim H^2 \log 1/T$, for a small but finite magnetic field $H$. Together with the previously reported anomalous specific heat $C$, this implies a quadrupolar Grüneisen ratio $Γ_u = \partial_T \varepsilon_{\mathrm{u}}/C \sim H^2/(T^2 \log 1/T)$ whose divergence for finite $H$ is consistent with the scenario of a quadrupolar Kondo effect. In addition, we find a singular behavior of the isotropic strain $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{B}}$ in zero magnetic field resulting in a divergence of both the volume thermal expansion and the volume Grüneisen parameter. We speculate that this behavior might be also induced by putative Kondo correlations via elastic anharmonicities or static strain disorder.

Spin-liquid signatures in the quantum critical regime of pressurized CePdAl

CePdAl is a prototypical frustrated Kondo lattice with partial long-range order (LRO) at $T_\mathrm{N}=2.7$ K. Previous bulk experiments under hydrostatic pressure found signatures for a quantum critical regime that extends from $p_\mathrm{c} \approx 0.9$ GPa, where LRO disappears, up to $\sim 1.7$ GPa. We employed extensive muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments under pressure. The continuous and complete suppression of LRO at $p_\mathrm{c}$ is confirmed. Above $T_\mathrm{N}(p)$ and beyond $p_\mathrm{c}$, an additional crossover scale $T^\ast(p)$ characterizes the change from pure to stretched exponential relaxation in zero field. Remarkably $T^\ast(p)$ agrees with previously determined signatures of entropy accumulation above LRO. This coincidence microscopically evidences fluctuating frustrated spins at $T\leq T^\ast$ with spin-liquid behavior. Power-law divergences of the temperature and longitudinal field dependences of the relaxation rate, with time-field scaling, at pressures between $p_c$ and 1.7 GPa characterize this regime as quantum critical.

Angle-dependent thermodynamics of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Thermodynamics of the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ is studied for different directions of in-plane magnetic field using measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_B$ and specific heat $C$. We identify two critical fields $B_c^{\rm AF1}$ and $B_c^{\rm AF2}$ corresponding, respectively, to a transition between two magnetically ordered states and the loss of magnetic order toward a quantum paramagnetic state. The $B_c^{AF2}$ phase boundary reveals a narrow region of magnetic fields where inverse melting of the ordered phase may occur. No additional transitions are detected above $B_c^{\rm AF2}$ for any direction of the in-plane field, although a shoulder anomaly in $Γ_B$ is observed systematically at $8-10$ T. Large field-induced entropy effects imply additional low-energy excitations at low fields and/or strongly field-dependent phonon entropies. Our results establish universal features of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in high magnetic fields and challenge the presence of a field-induced Kitaev spin liquid in this material.

Epitaxial growth and orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect of noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films

We report the growth of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films and the orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of (001) and (111) films due to nonzero Berry curvature. We found that post-annealing at 500$^\circ$C can significantly improve the AHE signals, though using the appropriate post-annealing conditions is important. The AHE and magnetization loops show sharp flipping at the coercive field in (111) films, while (001) films are hard to saturate by a magnetic field. The anomalous Hall conductivity of (111) films is an order of magnitude larger than that of (001) films. The present results provide not only a better understanding of the AHE in Mn$_3X$N systems but also further opportunities to study the unique phenomena related to noncollinear AFM.

Field evolution of low-energy excitations in the hyperhoneycomb magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

$^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and terahertz (THz) spectroscopies are used to probe magnetic excitations and their field dependence in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) measured down to 100\,mK indicates gapless nature of the excitations at low fields (below $H_c\simeq 2.8$\,T), in contrast to the gapped magnon excitations found in the honeycomb Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ at zero applied magnetic field. At higher temperatures in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, $1/T_1$ passes through a broad maximum without any clear anomaly at the Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 38$\,K, suggesting the abundance of low-energy excitations that are indeed observed as two peaks in the THz spectra, both correspond to zone-center magnon excitations. At higher fields (above $H_c$), an excitation gap opens, and a re-distribution of the THz spectral weight is observed without any indication of an excitation continuum, in contrast to $α$-RuCl$_3$ where an excitation continuum was reported.

Reply to the Comment by S. Wirth et al. on "Tuning low-energy scales in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ by non-isoelectronic substitution and pressure"

Previously, we reported that the doping and pressure dependence of the $T^\ast(B)$ crossover in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is incompatible with its interpretation as signature of a Kondo breakdown [M.-H. Schubert et al., Phys. Rev. Research 1, 032004(R) (2019)]. The comment by S. Wirth et al. [arXiv:1910.04108] refers to Hall measurements on undoped YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ and criticizes our study as incomplete and inconclusive. We thoroughly inspect these data and rebut the arguments of the comment.

Thermodynamic perspective on the field-induced behavior of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter ($Γ_B$) and specific heat on the Kitaev material candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ are used to access in-plane field- and temperature-dependence of the entropy up to 12 T and down to 1 K. No signatures corresponding to phase transitions are detected beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region, but only a shoulder-like anomaly in $Γ_B$, involving an entropy increment as small as $10^{-5} R\log 2$. These observations put into question the presence of a thermodynamic phase transition between the purported quantum spin liquid and the field-polarized state of $α$-RuCl$_3$. We show theoretically that at low temperatures $Γ_B$ is sensitive to crossings in the lowest excitations within gapped phases, and identify the measured shoulder-like anomaly as being of such origin. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that the shoulder-like anomaly can be reproduced in extended Kitaev models that gain proximity to an additional phase at finite field without entering it. We discuss manifestations of this proximity in other measurements.

A uniaxial stress capacitive dilatometer for high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction under multiextreme conditions

Thermal expansion and magnetostriction are directional dependent thermodynamic quantities. For the characterization of novel quantum phases of matter it is required to study materials under multi-extreme conditions, in particular down to very low temperatures, in very high magnetic fields, as well as under high pressure. We developed a miniaturized capacitive dilatometer suitable for temperatures down to 20 mK and usage in high magnetic fields, which exerts a large spring force between 40 to 75 N on the sample. This corresponds to a uniaxial stress up to 3 kbar for a sample with cross-section of (0.5~mm)$^2$. We describe the design and performance test of the dilatometer which resolves length changes with high resolution of $0.02 \mathrmÅ$ at low temperatures. The miniaturized device can be utilized in any standard cryostat, including dilution refrigerators or the commercial physical property measurement system.

Bose glass behavior in (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ representing the randomly diluted quantum spin-1/2 chains

The site-diluted compound (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ is a scarce realization of the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet partitioned into finite-size segments and is an ideal model compound for studying field-dependent effects of quenched disorder in the one-dimensional antiferromagnets. It differentiates from the systems studied so far in two aspects - the type of randomness and the nature of the energy gap in the pure sample. We have measured the specific heat of single-crystal (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 19.5 T. The contribution $C_{\perp}$ arising from the magnetic subsystem in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the chains is determined. Compared to pure Yb$_4$As$_3$, for which $C_{\perp}$ indicates a gap opening, for diluted systems a non-exponential decay is found at low temperatures which is consistent with the thermodynamic scaling of the specific heat established for a Bose-glass phase.

Electronic Scattering Effects in Europium-Based Iron Pnictides

In a comprehensive study, we investigate the electronic scattering effects in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In spite of the fact that Eu$^{2+}$ local moments order around $T_\text{Eu} \approx 20$\,K, the overall optical response is strikingly similar to the one of the well-known Ba-122 pnictides. The main difference lies within the suppression of the lower spin-density-wave gap feature. By analysing our spectra with a multi-component model, we find that the high-energy feature around 0.7\,eV -- often associated with Hund's rule coupling -- is highly sensitive to the spin-density-wave ordering, this further confirms its direct relationship to the dynamics of itinerant carriers. The same model is also used to investigate the in-plane anisotropy of magnetically detwinned EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, yielding a higher Drude weight and lower scattering rate along the crystallographic $a$-axis. Finally, we analyse the development of the room temperature spectra with isovalent phosphor substitution and highlight changes in the scattering rate of hole-like carriers induced by a Lifshitz transition.

Multiple metamagnetic quantum criticality in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

Bilayer strontium ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ displays pronounced non-Fermi liquid behavior at magnetic fields around 8 T, applied perpendicular to the ruthenate planes, which previously has been associated with an itinerant metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP). We focus on the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_{\rm H}$, which is the most direct probe to characterize field-induced quantum criticality. We confirm quantum critical scaling due to a putative two-dimensional QCEP near 7.845(5) T, which is masked by two ordered phases A and B, identified previously by neutron scattering. In addition we find evidence for a QCEP at 7.53(2) T and determine the quantum critical regimes of both instabilities and the effect of their superposition.

Single crystal growth from separated educts and its application to lithium transition-metal oxides

Thorough mixing of the starting materials is the first step of a crystal growth procedure. This holds true for almost any standard technique, whereas the intentional separation of educts is considered to be restricted to a very limited number of cases. A noticeable exception is the crystal growth in gels that allows for a better control of the nucleation by limiting the diffusion. The successful application of this principle to open systems, however, has remained elusive. Here we show that single crystals of α-Li2IrO3 can be grown from separated educts in an open crucible in air. Elemental lithium and iridium are oxidized and transported over a distance of typically one centimeter in an isothermal process. Single crystals grow from an exposed condensation point placed in between the educts. The method has also been applied to the growth of Li2RuO3, Li2PtO3 and β-Li2IrO3 and a successful use for various other materials is anticipated.

Super-heavy fermion material as metallic refrigerant for adiabatic demagnetization cooling

Low-temperature refrigeration is of crucial importance in fundamental research of condensed matter physics, as the investigations of fascinating quantum phenomena, such as superconductivity, superfluidity and quantum criticality, often require refrigeration down to very low temperatures. Currently, cryogenic refrigerators with $^3$He gas are widely used for cooling below 1 Kelvin. However, usage of the gas is being increasingly difficult due to the current world-wide shortage. Therefore, it is important to consider alternative methods of refrigeration. Here, we show that a new type of refrigerant, super-heavy electron metal, YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$, can be used for adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration, which does not require 3He gas. A number of advantages includes much better metallic thermal conductivity compared to the conventional insulating refrigerants. We also demonstrate that the cooling performance is optimized in Yb$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$Co$_2$Zn$_{20}$ by partial Sc substitution with $x\sim$0.19. The substitution induces chemical pressure which drives the materials close to a zero-field quantum critical point. This leads to an additional enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect in low fields and low temperatures enabling final temperatures well below 100 mK. Such performance has up to now been restricted to insulators. Since nearly a century the same principle of using local magnetic moments has been applied for adiabatic demagnetization cooling. This study opens new possibilities of using itinerant magnetic moments for the cryogen-free refrigeration.

T/B scaling without quasiparticle mass divergence: YbCo2Ge4

YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ is a clean paramagnetic Kondo lattice which displays non-Fermi liquid behavior. We report a detailed investigation of the specific heat, magnetic Grüneisen parameter ($Γ_{\rm mag}$) and temperature derivative of the magnetization ($M$) on a high-quality single crystal at temperatures down to $0.1$~K and magnetic fields up to 7~T. $Γ_{\rm mag}$ and $dM/dT$ display a divergence upon cooling and obey $T/B$ scaling. Similar behavior has previously been found in several other Yb-based Kondo lattices and related to a zero-field quantum critical point without fine tuning of pressure or composition. However, in the approach of $B\rightarrow 0$ the electronic heat capacity coefficient of YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ saturates at low $T$, excluding ferromagnetic quantum criticality. This indicates that $T/B$ scaling is insufficient to prove a zero-field quantum critical point.

Characteristic signatures of quantum criticality driven by geometrical frustration

Geometrical frustration describes situations where interactions are incompatible with the lattice geometry and stabilizes exotic phases such as spin liquids. Whether geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions in metals can induce unconventional quantum critical points is an active area of research. We focus on the hexagonal heavy fermion metal CeRhSn where the Kondo ions are located on distorted kagome planes stacked along the c axis. Low-temperature specific heat, thermal expansion and magnetic Grüneisen parameter measurements prove a zero-field quantum critical point. The linear thermal expansion, which measures the initial uniaxial pressure derivative of the entropy, displays a striking anisotropy. Critical and noncritical behaviors along and perpendicular to the kagome planes, respectively, prove that quantum criticality is driven by geometrical frustration. We also discovered a spin-flop-type metamagnetic crossover. This excludes an itinerant scenario and suggests that quantum criticality is related to local moments in a spin-liquid like state.

Non-Fermi-liquid scattering rates and anomalous band dispersion in ferropnictides

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the band dispersion and the quasiparticle scattering rates in two ferropnictides systems. Our ARPES results show linear-in-energy dependent scattering rates which are constant in a wide range of control parameter and which depend on the orbital character of the bands. We demonstrate that the linear energy dependence gives rise to weakly dispersing band with a strong mass enhancement when the band maximum crosses the chemical potential. In the superconducting phase the related small effective Fermi energy favors a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)\,\cite{Bardeen1957}-Bose-Einstein (BE)\,\cite{Bose1924} crossover state.

Spin waves and revised crystal structure of honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2IrO3, a candidate for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice. We observe spin-wave excitations below 5 meV with a dispersion that can be accounted for by including substantial further-neighbor exchanges that stabilize zig-zag magnetic order. The onset of long-range magnetic order below 15.3 K is confirmed via the observation of oscillations in zero-field muon-spin rotation experiments. Combining single-crystal diffraction and density functional calculations we propose a revised crystal structure model with significant departures from the ideal 90 deg Ir-O-Ir bonds required for dominant Kitaev exchange.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism in P-doped EuFe2As2

The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.15 has been determined using element specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. Combining magnetic, thermodynamic and scattering measurements, we conclude that the long range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments aligned primarily along the c axis coexists with the bulk superconductivity at zero field. At an applied magnetic field >= 0.6 T, superconductivity still coexists with the ferromagnetic Eu2+ moments which are polarized along the field direction. We propose a spontaneous vortex state for the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in EuFe2(As0.85P0.15)2.

Effect of isoelectronic doping on honeycomb lattice iridate A_2IrO_3

We have investigated experimentally and theoretically the series (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$)$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. Contrary to what has been believed so far, only for $x\leq0.25$ the system forms uniform solid solutions. For larger Li content, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, the system shows a miscibility gap and a phase separation into an ordered Na$_{3}$LiIr$_2$O$_{6}$ phase with alternating Na$_3$ and LiIr$_2$O$_6$ planes, and a Li-rich phase close to pure Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. For $x\leq 0.25$ we observe (1) an increase of $c/a$ with Li doping up to $x=0.25$, despite the fact that $c/a$ in pure Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is smaller than in Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, and (2) a gradual reduction of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_{N}$ and ordered moment. The previously proposed magnetic quantum phase transition at $x\approx 0.7$ may occur in a multiphase region and its nature needs to be re-evaluated.

Effect of nonmagnetic dilution in honeycomb lattice iridates Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We have synthesized single crystals of Na$_2$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)O$_3$ and polycrystals of Li$_2$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)O$_3$ and studied the effect of magnetic depletion on the magnetic properties by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at temperatures down to 0.1~K. In both systems, the non-magnetic substitution rapidly changes the magnetically ordered ground state into a spin glass, indicating strong frustration. While for the Li system the Weiss temperature $Θ_{\rm W}$ remains unchanged up to $x=0.55$, a strong decrease $|Θ_{\rm W}|$ is found for the Na system. This suggests that only for the former system magnetic exchange beyond nearest neighbors is dominating. This is also corroborated by the observation of a smeared quantum phase transition in Li$_2$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)O$_3$ near $x=0.5$, i.e. much beyond the site percolation threshold of the honeycomb lattice.

Investigation of unconventional reconstruction and electronic properties on the Na2IrO3 surface

Na2IrO3 is an intriguing material for which spin-orbit coupling plays a key role. Theoretical predictions, so far unverified, have been made that the surface of Na2IrO3 should exhibit a clear signature of the quantum spin Hall effect. We studied the surface of Na2IrO3 using scanning tunneling microscopy and density-functional theory calculations. We observed atomic level resolution of the surface and two types of terminations with different surface periodicity and Na content. By comparing bias-dependent experimental topographic images to simulated images, we determined the detailed atomistic structure of both observed surfaces. One of these reveals a strong relaxation to the surface of Na atoms from the subsurface region two atomic layers below. Such dramatic structural changes at the surface cast doubt on any prediction of surface properties based on bulk electronic structure. Indeed, using spatially resolved tunneling spectroscopy we found no indication of the predicted quantum spin Hall behavior.

Magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0.19

The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.19 has been determined using neutron scattering. We conclude that the Eu2+ moments are aligned along the c direction below T_C = 19.0(1) K with an ordered moment of 6.6(2) mu_B in the superconducting state. An impurity phase similar to the underdoped phase exists within the bulk sample which orders antiferromagnetically below T_N = 17.0(2) K. We found no indication of iron magnetic order, nor any incommensurate magnetic order of the Eu2+ moments in the sample.

Origin of the insulating state in honeycomb iridates and rhodates

A burning question in the emerging field of spin-orbit driven insulating iridates, such as Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 is whether the observed insulating state should be classified as a Mott-Hubbard insulator derived from a half-filled relativistic j_eff=1/2 band or as a band insulator where the gap is assisted by spin-orbit interaction, or Coulomb correlations, or both. The difference between these two interpretations is that only for the former, strong spin-orbit coupling (lambda >~ W, where W is the band width) is essential. We have synthesized the isostructural and isoelectronic Li2RhO3 and report its electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Remarkably it shows insulating behavior together with fluctuating effective S=1/2 moments, similar to Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3, although in Rh4+ (4d5) the spin-orbit coupling is greatly reduced. We show that this behavior has non-relativistic one-electron origin (although Coulomb correlations assist in opening the gap), and can be traced down to formation of quasi-molecular orbitals, similar to those in Na2IrO3.

Persistent detwinning of iron pnictides by small magnetic fields

Our comprehensive study on EuFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals a dramatic reduction of magnetic detwinning fields compared to other AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) iron pnictides by indirect magneto-elastic coupling of the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. We find that only 0.1T are sufficient for persistent detwinning below the local Eu$^{2+}$ ordering; above $T_\text{Eu}$ = 19K, higher fields are necessary. Even after the field is switched off, a significant imbalance of twin domains remains constant up to the structural and electronic phase transition (190K). This persistent detwinning provides the unique possibility to study the low temperature electronic in-plane anisotropy of iron pnictides without applying any symmetrybreaking external force.

Quantum criticality in a metallic spin liquid

When magnetic order is suppressed by frustrated interactions, spins form a highly correlated fluctuating "spin liquid" state down to low temperatures. Magnetic order of local moments can also be suppressed when they are fully screened by conduction electrons through the Kondo effect. Thus, the combination of strong geometrical frustration and Kondo screening may lead to novel types of quantum phase transitions. We report low-temperature thermodynamic measurements on the frustrated Kondo lattice Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which displays a chiral spin liquid state below 1.5 K due to the frustrated interaction between Ising 4f local moments and their interplay with Ir conduction electrons. Our results provide a first clear example of zero-field quantum critical scaling that emerges in a spin liquid state of a highly frustrated metal.

Unconventional magnetic order on the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev lattice in $β$-Li2IrO3: full solution via magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction

The recently-synthesized iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has been proposed as a candidate to display novel magnetic behavior stabilized by frustration effects from bond-dependent, anisotropic interactions (Kitaev model) on a three-dimensional "hyperhoneycomb" lattice. Here we report a combined study using neutron powder diffraction and magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction to solve the complete magnetic structure. We find a complex, incommensurate magnetic order with non-coplanar and counter-rotating Ir moments, which surprisingly shares many of its features with the related structural polytype "stripyhoneycomb" $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, where dominant Kitaev interactions have been invoked to explain the stability of the observed magnetic structure. The similarities of behavior between those two structural polytypes, which have different global lattice topologies but the same local connectivity, is strongly suggestive that the same magnetic interactions and the same underlying mechanism governs the stability of the magnetic order in both materials, indicating that both $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are strong candidates to realize dominant Kitaev interactions in a solid state material.

Anomalous reduction of the Lorenz ratio at the quantum critical point in YbAgGe

We report measurements of the electrical and thermal transport on the hexagonal heavy-fermion metal YbAgGe for temperatures $T\geq$ 40 mK and in magnetic fields $H\parallel ab$ up to 14 T. This distorted Kagome-lattice system displays a series of magnetic states and a quantum critical point at $H_c =4.5$ T. The Lorenz ratio $L(T)/L_0$ displays a marked reduction only close to $H_c$. A $T$-linear contribution below 120 mK, present at all different fields, allows to extrapolate the Lorenz ratio towards T=0. At the critical field this yields $L/L_0=0.92\pm 0.03$, suggesting a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law due to strong inelastic scattering.

Electron-phonon coupling in 122 Fe pnictides analyzed by femtosecond time-resolved photoemission

Based on results from femtosecond time-resolved photoemission, we compare three different methods for determination of the electron-phonon coupling constant λ in Eu and Ba-based 122 FeAs compounds. We find good agreement between all three methods, which reveal a small λ < 0.2. This makes simple electron-phonon mediated superconductivity unlikely in these compounds.

EuFe2(As1-xPx)2: reentrant spin glass and superconductivity

By systematic investigations of the magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of single crystals of EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 we explore the complex interplay of superconductivity and Eu2+ magnetism. Below 30K, two magnetic transitions are observed for all P substituted crystals suggesting a revision of the phase diagram. In addition to the canted A-type antiferromagnetic order of Eu2+ at approximately 20K, a spin glass transition is discovered at lower temperatures. Most remarkably, the reentrant spin glass state of EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 coexists with superconductivity around x = 0.2.

Experimental Quantification of Entanglement Through Heat Capacity

A new experimental realization of heat capacity as an entanglement witness (EW) is reported. Entanglement properties of a low dimensional quantum spin system are investigated by heat capacity measurements performed down to very low temperatures (400mK), for various applied magnetic field values. The experimentally extracted results for the value of heat capacity at zero field matches perfectly with the theoretical estimates of entanglement from model Hamiltonians. The studied sample is a spin $\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic system which shows clear signature of quantum phase transition (QPT) at very low temperatures when the heat capacity is varied as a function of fields at a fixed temperature. The variation of entanglement as a function of field is then explored in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition to capture the sudden loss of entanglement.

Field-induced suppression of the heavy-fermion state in YbRh_2Si_2

We report DC magnetization measurements on YbRh_2Si_2 at temperatures down to 0.04K, magnetic fields B<11.5T and under hydrostatic pressure P<1.3GPa. At ambient pressure a kink at B*=9.9T indicates a new type of field-induced transition from an itinerant to a localized 4f-state. This transition is different from the metamagnetic transition observed in other heavy fermion compounds, as here ferromagnetic rather than antiferromagnetic correlations dominate below B*. Hydrostatic pressure experiments reveal a clear correspondence of B* to the characteristic spin fluctuation temperature determined from specific heat.

Interplay between Kondo suppression and Lifshitz transitions in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ at high magnetic fields

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.

Low-energy electronic properties of clean CaRuO$_3$: elusive Landau quasiparticles

We have prepared high-quality epitaxial thin films of CaRuO$_3$ with residual resistivity ratios up to 55. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance and a $T^2$ temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity only below 1.5 K, whose coefficient is substantially suppressed in large magnetic fields, establish CaRuO$_3$ as a Fermi liquid (FL) with anomalously low coherence scale. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) $T^{3/2}$ dependence is found between 2 and 25 K. The high sample quality allows access to the intrinsic electronic properties via THz spectroscopy. For frequencies below 0.6 THz, the conductivity is Drude-like and can be modeled by FL concepts, while for higher frequencies non-Drude behavior, inconsistent with FL predictions, is found. This establishes CaRuO$_3$ as a prime example of optical NFL behavior in the THz range.

Magnetic excitation spectrum of Na2IrO3 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The low energy excitations in Na2IrO3 have been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). A magnetic excitation branch can be resolved, whose dispersion reaches a maximum energy of about 35 meV at the Γ-point. The momentum dependence of the excitation energy is much larger along the Γ-X direction compared to that along the Γ-Y direction. The observed dispersion relation is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction based on Heisenberg-Kitaev model. At high temperatures, we find large contributions from lattice vibrational modes to our RIXS spectra, suggesting that a strong electron-lattice coupling is present in Na2IrO3.

Quantum bicriticality in the heavy-fermion metamagnet YbAgGe

Bicritical points, at which two distinct symmetry-broken phases become simultaneously unstable, are typical for spin-flop metamagnetism. Interestingly, the heavy-fermion compound YbAgGe also possesses such a bicritical point (BCP) with a low temperature T_BCP ~ 0.3 K at a magnetic field of mu_0 H_BCP ~ 4.5 T. In its vicinity, YbAgGe exhibits anomalous behavior that we attribute to the influence of a quantum bicritical point (QBCP), that is close in parameter space yet can be reached by tuning T_BCP further to zero. Using high-resolution measurements of the magnetocaloric effect, we demonstrate that the magnetic Grueneisen parameter Gamma_H indeed both changes sign and diverges as required for quantum criticality. Moreover, Gamma_H displays a characteristic scaling behavior but only on the low-field side, H < H_BCP, indicating a pronounced asymmetry with respect to the critical field. We speculate that the small value of T_BCP is related to the geometric frustration of the Kondo-lattice of YbAgGe.

Quantum criticality near the upper critical field of Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements in magnetic fields up to 12 T applied parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis of the heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional (2D) relative CeCoIn$_5$, the system displays an almost isotropic upper critical field. While there is no indication for a FFLO phase in Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$, the data suggest a smeared weak first-order superconducting transition close to $H_{c2}\approx 2$ T. The normal state electronic specific heat coefficient displays logarithmically divergent behavior, comparable to CeCoIn$_5$ and in agreement with 2D quantum criticality of spin-density-wave type.

Quasiparticle entropy in the high-field superconducting phase of CeCoIn$_5$

The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ displays an additional transition within its superconducting (SC) state, whose nature is characterized by high-precision studies of the isothermal field dependence of the entropy, derived from combined specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements at temperatures $T\geq 100$ mK and fields $H\leq 12$ T aligned parallel, perpendicular and $18^\circ$ off the tetragonal [100] direction. For any of these conditions, we do not observe an additional entropy contribution upon tuning at constant temperature by magnetic field from the homogeneous SC into the presumed Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) SC state. By contrast, for $H\parallel [100]$ a negative isothermal entropy contribution, compatible with spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering, is found. Our data exclude the formation of a FFLO state in CeCoIn$_5$ for out-of-plane field directions, where no SDW order exists.

Specific heat of segmented Heisenberg quantum spin chains in (Yb_{1-x}Lu_x)_4As_3

We report low-temperature specific heat, $C(T)$, measurements on (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ with $x=0.01$ and $x=0.03$, where nonmagnetic Lu atoms are randomly distributed on antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains with $J/k_{\mathrm B}=28$ K. The observed reduction of $C$ below 15 K with increasing $x$ is accurately described by quantum transfer matrix simulations without any adjustable parameter, implying that the system is an excellent experimental realization of segmented quantum spin chains. Finite-size effects consistent with conformal-field theory predictions are leading to the formation of an effective low-energy gap. The size of the gap increases with Lu content and accounts for the impurity driven reduction of the specific heat. For both concentrations our results verify experimentally the low temperature scaling behavior established theoretically and also confirm the value of $J$ determined from pure Yb$_4$As$_3$.

Spin liquid close to a quantum critical point in Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is a candidate material for a 3-dimensional quantum spin-liquid on the hyperkagome lattice. We present thermodynamic measurements of heat capacity $C$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ on high quality polycrystalline samples of Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ down to $T = 500$ mK and $75$ mK, respectively. Absence of long-range magnetic order down to $T = 75$ mK strongly supports claims of a spin-liquid ground state. The constant magnetic susceptibility $χ$ below $T \approx 25$ K and the presence of a small but finite linear-$T$ term in $C(T)$ suggest the presence of gapless spin excitations. Additionally, the magnetic Gr$\ddot{\rm{u}}$neisen ratio shows a divergence as $T \rightarrow 0$ K and a scaling behavior which clearly demonstrates that Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ is situated close to a zero-field QCP.

Upper critical magnetic field in K0.83Fe1.83Se2 and Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 single crystals

The H-T phase diagrams of single crystalline electron-doped K0.83Fe1.83Se2 (KFS1), K0.8Fe2Se2 (KFS2) and hole-doped Eu0.5K0.5Fe2As2 (EKFA) have been deduced from tunnel diode oscillator-based contactless measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 57 T for the inter-plane (H//c) and in-plane (H//ab) directions. The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2(T) relevant to EFKA is accounted for by the Pauli model including an anisotropic Pauli paramagnetic contribution (μ_BHp=114 T for H//ab and 86 T for H//c). This is also the case of KFS1 and KFS2 for H//ab whereas a significant upward curvature, accounted for by a two-gap model, is observed for H//c. Despite the presence of antiferromagnetic lattice order within the superconducting state of the studied compounds, no influence of magnetic ordering on the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) is observed.

Zero-field Quantum Critical Point in CeCoIn$_5$

Quantum criticality in the normal and superconducting state of the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$ is studied by measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen ratio, $Γ_H$, and specific heat in different field orientations and temperatures down to 50 mK. Universal temperature over magnetic field scaling of $Γ_H$ in the normal state indicates a hidden quantum critical point at zero field. Within the superconducting state the quasiparticle entropy at constant temperature increases upon reducing the field towards zero, providing additional evidence for zero-field quantum criticality.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

Electron spin resonance in Eu based Fe pnictides

The phase diagrams of EuFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ $(0 \leq x \leq 0.4)$ and EuFe$_2$As$_{2-y}$P$_y$ $(0 \leq y \leq 0.43)$ are investigated by Eu$^{2+}$ electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals. From the temperature dependence of the linewidth $ΔH(T)$ of the exchange narrowed ESR line the spin-density wave (SDW) $(T < T_{\rm SDW})$ and the normal metallic regime $(T > T_{\rm SDW})$ are clearly distinguished. At $T > T_{\rm SDW}$ the isotropic linear increase of the linewidth is driven by the Korringa relaxation which measures the conduction-electron density of states at the Fermi level. For $T < T_{\rm SDW}$ the anisotropy probes the local ligand field, while the coupling to the conduction electrons disappears. With increasing substitution $x$ or $y$ the transition temperature $T_{\rm SDW}$ decreases linearly accompanied by a linear decrease of the Korringa-relaxation rate from 8 Oe/K at $x=y=0$ down to 3 Oe/K at the onset of superconductivity at $x \approx 0.2$ or at $y \approx 0.3$, above which it remains nearly constant. Comparative ESR measurements on single crystals of the Eu diluted SDW compound Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting (SC) Eu$_{0.22}$Sr$_{0.78}$Fe$_{1.72}$Co$_{0.28}$As$_2$ corroborate the leading influence of the ligand field on the Eu$^{2+}$ spin relaxation in the SDW regime as well as the Korringa relaxation in the normal metallic regime. Like in Eu$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ a coherence peak is not detected in the latter compound at $T_{\rm c}=21$ K, which is in agreement with the expected complex anisotropic SC gap structure.

Electronic nematicity and its relation to quantum criticality in Sr_3Ru_2O_7 studied by thermal expansion

We report high-resolution measurements of the in-plane thermal expansion anisotropy in the vicinity of the electronic nematic phase in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ down to very low temperatures and in varying magnetic field orientation. For fields applied along the c-direction, a clear second-order phase transition is found at the nematic phase, with critical behavior compatible with the two-dimensional Ising universality class (although this is not fully conclusive). Measurements in a slightly tilted magnetic field reveal a broken four-fold in-plane rotational symmetry, not only within the nematic phase, but extending towards slightly larger fields. We also analyze the universal scaling behavior expected for a metamagnetic quantum critical point, which is realized outside the nematic region. The contours of the magnetostriction suggest a relation between quantum criticality and the nematic phase.

Na2IrO3 as a spin-orbit-assisted antiferromagnetic insulator with a 340 meV gap

We study Na2IrO3 by ARPES, optics, and band structure calculations in the local-density approximation (LDA). The weak dispersion of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold highlights the importance of structural distortions and spin-orbit coupling (SO) in driving the system closer to a Mott transition. We detect an insulating gap Δ_gap = 340 meV which, at variance with a Slater-type description, is already open at 300 K and does not show significant temperature dependence even across T_N ~ 15 K. An LDA analysis with the inclusion of SO and Coulomb repulsion U reveals that, while the prodromes of an underlying insulating state are already found in LDA+SO, the correct gap magnitude can only be reproduced by LDA+SO+U, with U = 3 eV. This establishes Na2IrO3 as a novel type of Mott-like correlated insulator in which Coulomb and relativistic effects have to be treated on an equal footing.

Optical properties of the iron-pnictide analog BaMn2As2

We have investigated the infrared and Raman optical properties of BaMn2As2 in the ab-plane and along the c-axis. The most prominent features in the infrared spectra are the Eu and A2u phonon modes which show clear TO-LO splitting from the energy loss function analysis. All the phonon features we observed in infrared and Raman spectra are consistent with the calculated values. Compared to the iron-pnictide analog AFe2As2, this compound is much more two-dimensional in its electronic properties. For E || c-axis, the overall infrared reflectivity is insulating like. Within the ab-plane the material exhibits a semiconducting behavior. An energy gap 2Δ=48 meV can be clearly identified below room temperature.

Relevance of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model for the honeycomb lattice iridates A_2IrO_3

Combining thermodynamic measurements with theoretical density functional and thermodynamic calculations we demonstrate that the honeycomb lattice iridates A2IrO3 (A = Na, Li) are magnetically ordered Mott insulators where the magnetism of the effective spin-orbital S = 1/2 moments can be captured by a Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) model with Heisenberg interactions beyond nearest-neighbor exchange. Experimentally, we observe an increase of the Curie-Weiss temperature from θ= -125 K for Na2IrO3 to θ= -33 K for Li2IrO3, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature remains roughly the same T_N = 15 K for both materials. Using finite-temperature functional renormalization group calculations we show that this evolution of θ, T_N, the frustration parameter f = θ/T_N, and the zig-zag magnetic ordering structure suggested for both materials by density functional theory can be captured within this extended HK model. Combining our experimental and theoretical results, we estimate that Na2IrO3 is deep in the magnetically ordered regime of the HK model (α\approx 0.25), while Li2IrO3 appears to be close to a spin-liquid regime (0.6 < α< 0.7).

Thermopower as sensitive probe of electronic nematicity in iron pnictides

We study the in-plane anisotropy of the thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity on detwinned single crystals of isovalent substituted EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$. Compared to the resistivity anisotropy the thermopower anisotropy is more pronounced and clearly visible already at temperatures much above the structural and magnetic phase transitions. Most remarkably, the thermopower anisotropy changes sign below the structural transition. This is associated with the interplay of two contributions due to anisotropic scattering and orbital polarization, which dominate at high- and low-temperatures, respectively.

The interplay between superconductivity and Eu$ ^{2+}$ magnetic moments in EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ is studied by electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure on $x=0.13$ and $x=0.18$ single crystals. We can map hydrostatic pressure to chemical pressure $x$ and show, that superconductivity is confined to a very narrow range $0.18\leq x \leq 0.23$ in the phase diagram, beyond which ferromagnetic (FM) Eu ordering suppresses superconductivity. The change from antiferro- to FM Eu ordering at the latter concentration coincides with a Lifshitz transition and the complete depression of iron magnetic order.

Long range magnetic ordering in Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic structure of the honeycomb lattice magnet Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a strong candidate for a realization of a gapless spin-liquid. Using resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Ir L$_3$-edge, we find 3D long range antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=13.3 K. From the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic Bragg peak, the ordered moment is determined to be predominantly along the {\it a}-axis. Combining the experimental data with first principles calculations, we propose that the most likely spin structure is a novel "zig-zag" structure.

We report bulk superconductivity (SC) in Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$(Fe$_{0.86}$Co$_{0.14}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements with $T$$_{\mathrm{c}}$ $\simeq$ 20 K with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at $T$$_{\mathrm{N}}$ $\simeq$ 2.0 K in zero field. $^{75}$As NMR experiments have been performed in the two external field directions (H$\|ab$) and (H$\|c$). $^{75}$As-NMR spectra are analyzed in terms of first order quadrupolar interaction. Spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_{1}$) follow a $T^{3}$ law in the temperature range 4.2-15 K. There is no signature of Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below the SC transition indicating a non s-wave or s$_{\pm}$ type of superconductivity. Momentum dependent ultrafast electron dynamics in antiferromagnetic EuFe2As2

Employing the momentum-sensitivity of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we demonstrate the analysis of ultrafast single- and many-particle dynamics in antiferromagnetic EuFe2As2. Their separation is based on a temperature-dependent difference of photo-excited hole and electron relaxation times probing the single particle band and the spin density wave gap, respectively. Reformation of the magnetic order occurs at 800 fs, which is four times slower compared to electron-phonon equilibration due to a smaller spin-dependent relaxation phase space.

Signatures of quantum criticality in hole-doped and chemically pressurized EuFe_2As_2 single crystals

We study the effect of hole-doping and chemical pressure (isovalent doping) in single crystals of K$_x$Eu$_{1-x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-y}$P$_y$)$_2$, respectively, by measurements of the thermopower, $S(T)$, and electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$. The evolution of $S(T)$ upon doping indicates drastic changes of the electronic configuration at critical values $x_{\mathrm{cr}}=0.3$ and $y_{\mathrm{cr}}=0.21$, respectively, as the spin-density-wave transition is completely suppressed and superconductivity (SC) emerges. For the case of chemical pressure, the comparison with published ARPES measurements indicates a Lifshitz transition at $y_{cr}$. The temperature dependences $S(T)/T\propto \log T$ and $Δρ\propto T$ observed in the normal state above the SC transition suggest quantum criticality in both systems.

Symmetry-breaking lattice distortion in Sr_3Ru_2O_7

The electronic nematic phase of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is investigated by high-resolution in-plane thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields close to 8 T applied at various angles $Θ$ off the c-axis. At $Θ<10^\circ$ we observe a very small ($10^{-7}$) lattice distortion which breaks the four-fold in-plane symmetry, resulting in nematic domains with interchanged $a$- and b-axis. At $Θ\gtrsim 10^\circ$ the domains are almost fully aligned and thermal expansion indicates an area-preserving lattice distortion of order $2\times 10^{-6}$ which is likely related to orbital ordering. Since the system is located in the immediate vicinity to a metamagnetic quantum critical end point, the results represent the first observation of a structural relaxation driven by quantum criticality.

Dissimilarities between the electronic structure of chemically doped and chemically pressurized iron pnictides from an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study

We have studied the electronic structure of EuFe2As2-xPx using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Upon substituting As with the isovalent P, which leads to a chemical pressure and to superconductivity, we observe a non-rigid-band like change of the electronic structure along the center of the Brillouin zone (BZ): an orbital and kz dependent increase or decrease in the size of the hole pockets near the Gamma - Z line. On the other hand, the diameter of the Fermi surface cylinders at the BZ corner forming electron pockets, hardly changes. This is in stark contrast to p and n-type doped iron pnictides where, on the basis of ARPES experiments, a more rigid-band like behavior has been proposed. These findings indicate that there are different ways in which the nesting conditions can be reduced causing the destabilization of the antiferromagnetic order and the appearance of the superconducting dome.

Electron-phonon coupling and momentum-dependent electron dynamics in EuFe2As2 using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The Fe pnictide parent compound EuFe2As2 exhibits a strongly momentum dependent carrier dynamics around the hole pocket at the center of the Brillouin zone. The very different dynamics of electrons and holes cannot be explained solely by intraband scattering and interband contributions have to be considered. In addition, three coherently excited modes at frequencies of 5.6, 3.1 and 2.4 THz are observed. An estimate of the electron-phonon coupling parameter reveals lambda < 0.5, suggesting a limited importance of e-ph coupling to superconductivity in Fe pnictides.

Evidence for a Non-Fermi-Liquid Phase in Ge-Substituted YbRh2Si2

The canonical view of heavy fermion quantum criticality assumes a single quantum critical point separating the paramagnet from the antiferromagnet. However, recent experiments on Yb-based heavy fermion compounds suggest the presence of non-Fermi liquid behavior over a finite zero-temperature region. Using detailed susceptibility and transport measurements we show that the classic quantum critical system, Ge-substituted YbRh2Si2, also displays such behavior. We advance arguments that this is not due to a disorder-smeared quantum critical point, but represents a new class of metallic phase.

Magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in Fe pnictides probed by electron spin resonance

The electron spin resonance absorption spectrum of Eu^{2+} ions serves as a probe of the normal and superconducting state in Eu_{0.5}K_{0.5}Fe_2As_2. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} obtained from the ESR linewidth exhibits a Korringa-like linear increase with temperature above T_C evidencing a normal Fermi-liquid behavior. Below 45 K deviations from the Korringa-law occur which are ascribed to enhanced magnetic fluctuations within the FeAs layers upon approaching the superconducting transition. Below T_C the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} follows a T^{1.5}-behavior without the appearance of a coherence peak.

Optical investigations of the chemical pressurized EuFe2(As1-xPx)2: an s-wave superconductor with strong interband interaction

Superconducting EuFe2(As0.82P0.18)2 single crystals are investigated by infrared spectroscopy in a wide frequency range. Below Tc=28K a superconducting gap forms at 2Δ_{0} = 9.5 meV = 3.8 k_B T_c causing the reflectivity to sharply rise to unity at low frequency. In the range of the gap the optical conductivity can be perfectly described by BCS theory with an $s$-wave gap and no nodes. From our analysis of the temperature dependent conductivity and spectral weight at T>T_c, we deduce an increased interband coupling between hole- and electron-sheets on the Fermi surface when $T$ approaches T_c.

Quantum oscillations in the anomalous phase in Sr3Ru2O7

We report measurements of quantum oscillations detected in the putative nematic phase of Sr3Ru2O7. Significant improvements in sample purity enabled the resolution of small amplitude dHvA oscillations between two first order metamagnetic transitions delimiting the phase. Two distinct frequencies were observed, and their amplitudes follow the normal Lifshitz-Kosevich profile. The Fermi surface sheets seem to correspond to a subset of those detected outside the phase. Variations of the dHvA frequencies are explained in terms of a chemical potential shift produced by reaching a peak in the density of states, and an anomalous field dependence of the oscillatory amplitude provides information on domains.

Quantum oscillations near the metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7

We report detailed investigation of quantum oscillations in Sr3Ru2O7, observed inductively (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) and thermally (the magnetocaloric effect). Working at fields from 3 T to 18 T allowed us to straddle the metamagnetic transition region and probe the low- and high-field Fermi liquids. The observed frequencies are strongly field-dependent in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition, and there is evidence for magnetic breakdown. We also present the results of a comprehensive rotation study. The most surprising result concerns the field dependence of the measured quasiparticle masses. Contrary to conclusions previously drawn by some of us as a result of a study performed with a much poorer signal to noise ratio, none of the five Fermi surface branches for which we have good field-dependent data gives evidence for a strong field dependence of the mass. The implications of these experimental findings are discussed.

Universal signatures of the metamagnetic quantum critical endpoint: Application to CeRu2Si2

A quantum critical endpoint related to a metamagnetic transition causes distinct signatures in the thermodynamic quantities of a compound. We argue that, irrespective of the microscopic details of the considered material, the diverging differential susceptibility combined with the Ising symmetry of the endpoint give rise to a number of characteristic metamagnetic phenomena. In the presence of a magnetoelastic coupling, one finds a correspondence of susceptibility, magnetostriction and compressibility and, as a result, a pronounced crystal softening, a diverging Grueneisen parameter, a sign change of thermal expansion alpha(H), and a minimum in the specific heat coefficient gamma(H). We illustrate these signatures and their relation on the metamagnetic crossover at 8 T in the prototypical heavy-fermion system CeRu2Si2.

Anisotropy of the low-temperature magnetostriction of Sr3Ru2O7

We use high-resolution capacitive dilatometry to study the low-temperature linear magnetostriction of the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ as a function of magnetic field applied perpendicular to the ruthenium-oxide planes ($B\parallel c$). The relative length change $ΔL(B)/L$ is detected either parallel or perpendicular to the c-axis close to the metamagnetic region near B=8 T. In both cases, clear peaks in the coefficient $λ(B)=d(ΔL/L)/dB$ at three subsequent metamagnetic transitions are observed. For $ΔL\perp c$, the third transition at 8.1 T bifurcates at temperatures below 0.5 K. This is ascribed to the effect of an in-plane uniaxial pressure of about 15 bar, unavoidable in the dilatometer, which breaks the original fourfold in-plane symmetry.

Droplet-like Fermi surfaces in the anti-ferromagnetic phase of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, an Fe-pnictide superconductor parent compound

Using angle resolved photoemission it is shown that the low lying electronic states of the iron pnictide parent compound EuFe$_2$As$_2$ are strongly modified in the magnetically ordered, low temperature, orthorhombic state compared to the tetragonal, paramagnetic case above the spin density wave transition temperature. Back-folded bands, reflected in the orthorhombic/ anti-ferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary hybridize strongly with the non-folded states, leading to the opening of energy gaps. As a direct consequence, the large Fermi surfaces of the tetragonal phase fragment, the low temperature Fermi surface being comprised of small droplets, built up of electron and hole-like sections. These high resolution ARPES data are therefore in keeping with quantum oscillation and optical data from other undoped pnictide parent compounds.

Ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ thin films

The ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the perovskite ruthenate Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements on thin films. The films were grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using metalorganic aerosol deposition and characterized by X-ray diffraction and room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. High residual resistivity ratios of 29 and 16 for $x=0$ and $x=1$, respectively, prove the high quality of the investigated samples. We observe a continuous suppression of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature from $T_C=160$ K at $x=0$ towards $T_C\to 0$ at $x_c\approx 0.8$. The analysis of the electrical resistivity between 2 and 10 K reveals $T^2$ and $T^{3/2}$ behavior at $x\leq 0.6$ and $x\geq 0.7$, respectively. For undoped CaRuO$_3$, the measurement has been extended down to 60 mK, revealing a crossover to $T^2$ behavior around 2 K, which suggests a Fermi-liquid ground state in this system.

Kondo-Cluster-Glass State near a Ferromagnetic Quantum Phase Transition

We report on a comprehensive study of CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ $(0.6 \leq x \leq 0.95)$ poly- and single crystals close to the ferromagnetic instability by means of low-temperature ac susceptibility, magnetization and volume thermal expansion. The signature of ferromagnetism in this heavy-fermion system can be traced from 6.6 K in CePd down to 25 mK for $x=0.87$. Despite pronounced non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) effects in both, specific heat and thermal expansion, the Grüneisen ratio {\it does not} diverge as $T\to 0$, providing evidence for the absence of a quantum critical point. Instead, a peculiar "Kondo-cluster-glass" state is found for $x\geq 0.65$, and the NFL effects in the specific heat, ac susceptibility and magnetization are compatible with the quantum Griffiths phase scenario.

Magnetization study on the field-induced quantum critical point in YbRh_2Si_2

We study the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ by low-temperature magnetization, $M(T)$, and magnetic Grüneisen ratio, $Γ_{\rm mag}$, measurements and compare the results with previous thermal expansion, $β(T)$, and critical Grüneisen ratio, $Γ^{cr}(T)$, data on YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$. In the latter case, a slightly negative chemical pressure has been used to tune the system towards its zero-field QCP. The magnetization derivative $-dM/dT$ is far more singular than thermal expansion, reflecting a strongly temperature dependent pressure derivative of the field at constant entropy, $(dH/dP)_S=V_mβ/(dM/dT)$ ($V_m$: molar volume), which saturates at $(0.15\pm 0.04)$ T/GPa for $T\to 0$. The magnetic field dependence of the magnetisation ($M$) and the temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility ($χ' = dM/dH$) of CePd(1-x)Rh(x) single crystals with $0.80 \leq x \leq 0.86$ are analysed within the frame of the quantum Griffiths phase scenario, which predicts $M \propto H^λ$ and $χ' \propto T^{λ-1}$ with $0 \leq λ\leq 1$. All $M$ vs $H$ and $χ'$ vs $T$ data follow the predicted power-law behaviour. The parameter $λ$, extracted from $χ'(T)$, is very sensitive to the Rh content $x$ and varies systematically with $x$ from -0.1 to 0.4. The value of $λ$, derived from $M(H)$ measurements on a \cpr single crystal, seems to be rather constant, $λ\approx 0.2$, in a broad range of temperatures between 0.05 and 2 K and fields up to about 10 T. All observed signatures and the $λ$ values are thus compatible with the quantum Griffiths scenario.

Quantum Criticality in doped CePd_1-xRh_x Ferromagnet

CePd_1-xRh_x alloys exhibit a continuous evolution from ferromagnetism (T_C= 6.5 K) at x = 0 to a mixed valence (MV) state at x = 1. We have performed a detailed investigation on the suppression of the ferromagnetic (F) phase in this alloy using dc-(χ_dc) and ac-susceptibility (χ_ac), specific heat (C_m), resistivity (ρ) and thermal expansion (β) techniques. Our results show a continuous decrease of T_C (x) with negative curvature down to T_C = 3K at x*= 0.65, where a positive curvature takes over. Beyond x*, a cusp in cac is traced down to T_C* = 25 mK at x = 0.87, locating the critical concentration between x = 0.87 and 0.90. The quantum criticality of this region is recognized by the -log(T/T_0) dependence of C_m/T, which transforms into a T^-q (~0.5) one at x = 0.87. At high temperature, this system shows the onset of valence instability revealed by a deviation from Vegard's law (at x_V~0.75) and increasing hybridization effects on high temperature χ_dc and ρ. Coincidentally, a Fermi liquid contribution to the specific heat arises from the MV component, which becomes dominant at the CeRh limit. In contrast to antiferromagnetic systems, no C_m/T flattening is observed for x > x_cr rather the mentioned power law divergence, which coincides with a change of sign of β. The coexistence of F and MV components and the sudden changes in the T dependencies are discussed in the context of randomly distributed magnetic and Kondo couplings.
