A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg$_2$Sb$_2$ single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA$_2$Pn$_2$ (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the electronic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintl-phase single crystals of EuMg$_2$Sb$_2$ with the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$ crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies find an activated behavior with the intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat-capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Neel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 8.0(2) K. Zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu ordered moments (Eu$^{2+}$, S= 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane with the Eu moments in adjacent layers aligned antiferromagnetically. We also find that Eu-moment reorientation in the trigonal AFM domains within the ab planes occurs below $T_{\rm N}$ at low fields < 0.05 T due to very small in-plane anisotropy. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg$_2$Sb$_2$ implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling in tuning the electronic states of these materials.

Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr2As2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

The physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr$_2$As$_2$ with body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity $ρ$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}$, magnetic susceptibility $χ$ versus temperature~$T$ and magnetization $M$ versus applied magnetic field $H$ isotherm measurements as well as $^{75}$As and $^{53}$Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range $T$ = 1.6--900 K. From the $χ(T)$ and $^{75}$As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below $T_{\rm N}$ = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the $^{53}$Cr NMR spectrum under $H$ = 0. From the $χ(T)$ measurements on single-crystal SrCr$_2$As$_2$ under the two different magnetic field directions $H||ab$ and $H||c$ in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the $c$ axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the $ρ$, $C_{\rm p}$, and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of $H$. The $ρ(T)$ is found to show $T$-linear behavior above $T_{\rm N}$ and exhibits positive curvature below $T_{\rm N}$ where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed.

KCo$_2$As$_2$: A New Portal for the Physics of High-Purity Metals

High-quality single crystals of KCo$_2$As$_2$ with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were grown using KAs self flux. Structural, magnetic, thermal, and electrical transport were investigated. No clear evidence for any phase transitions was found in the temperature range 2 to 300 K. The in-plane electrical resistivity $ρ$ versus temperature $T$ is highly unusual, showing a $T^4$ behavior below 30 K and an anomalous positive curvature up to 300 K which is different from the linear behavior expected from the Bloch-Grüneisen theory for electron scattering by acoustic phonons. This positive curvature has been previously observed in the in-plane resistivity of high-conductivity layered delafossites such as PdCoO$_2$ and PtCoO$_2$. The in-plane $ρ(T\to0) = 0.36~μΩ$ cm of KCo$_2$As$_2$ is exceptionally small for this class of compounds. The material also exhibits a nearly linear magnetoresistance at low $T$ which attains a value of about 40% at $T=2$K and magnetic field $H= 80$ kOe. The magnetic susceptibility $χ$ of KCo$_2$As$_2$ is isotropic and about an order of magnitude smaller than the values for the related compounds SrCo$_2$As$_2$ and BaCo$_2$As$_2$. The $χ$ increases above 100 K which is found from our first-principles calculations to arise from a sharp peak in the electronic density of states just above the Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}$. Heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data at low $T$ yield an electronic density of states $N(E_{\rm F})$ that is about 36% larger than predicted by the first-principles theory. The $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data near room temperature suggest the presence of excited optic vibration modes which may also be the source of the positive curvature in $ρ(T)$. Our results show that KCo$_2$As$_2$ provides a new avenue for investigating the physics of high-purity metals.

Slow spin dynamics in the hyper-honeycomb Lattice [(C2H5)3NH]2Cu2(C2O4)3 revealed by 1H NMR studies

We report the results of magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on a three-dimensional hyper-honeycomb lattice compound [(C$_2$H$_5$)$_3$NH]$_2$Cu$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$ (CCCO). The average value of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling between the Cu$^{2+}$ ($S$ = 1/2) spins was determined to be $J$~$\sim$~50 K from the $χ$ measurements. No long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to $T$ = 50 mK, although NMR lines become slightly broader at low temperatures below 1 K. The broadening of the NMR spectrum observed below 1 K reveals that the Cu spin moments remain at this temperature, suggesting a non-spin-singlet ground state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of 1/$T_1$ at temperatures above 20 K is well explained by paramagnetic thermal spin fluctuations where the fluctuation frequency of Cu$^{2+}$ spins is higher than the NMR frequency of the order of MHz. However, a clear signature of the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations was observed at low temperatures where 1/$T_1$ shows a thermally-activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of the magnitude of the spin excitation gap suggests that the magnetic behaviors of CCCO are characterized as an AFM chain at low temperatures.

Topological electronic structure of YbMg$_2$Bi$_2$ and CaMg$_2$Bi$_2$

Zintl compounds have been extensively studied for their outstanding thermoelectric properties, but their electronic structure remains largely unexplored. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the electronic structure of the isostructural thermopower materials YbMg$_2$Bi$_2$ and CaMg$_2$Bi$_2$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT). The ARPES results show a significantly smaller Fermi surface and Fermi velocity in CaMg$_2$Bi$_2$ than in YbMg$_2$Bi$_2$. Our ARPES results also reveal that in the case of YbMg$_2$Bi$_2$, Yb-4$f$ states reside well below the Fermi level and likely have a negligible impact on transport properties. To properly model the position of 4$f$-states, as well as the overall electronic structure, a Hubbard $U$ at the Yb sites and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have to be included in the DFT calculations. Interestingly, the theoretical results reveal that both materials belong to a $Z_2$ topological class and host robust topological surface states around $E_\mathrm {F}$. Due to the intrinsic hole doping, the topological states reside above the Fermi level, inaccessible by ARPES. Our results also suggest that in addition to SOC, vacancies and the resulting hole doping play an important role in the transport properties of these materials.

A-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-7/2 triangular-lattice compound EuSn2As2

The trigonal compound EuSn2As2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature TN = 24 K. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn2As2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H,T), magnetic susceptibility chi(H,T) = M(T)/H, heat capacity Cp(H,T), and electrical resistivity rho(H,T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and chi(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below TN =23.5(2) K, where the Eu{2+} spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The chi(H{ab},T) and chi(H{c},T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ~ 0.15 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the chi(T), Cp(T) and rho(H,T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice TN. The rho(H,T) of the compound does not reflect a contribution of the topological state, but rather is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering. The magnetic phase diagrams for both H||c and H||ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the TN(H), chi(H,T), Cp(H,T), and rho(H,T) data.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in CaMn2As2 and SrMn2As2 revealed by 75As NMR

We carried out $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn$_2$As$_2$ and SrMn$_2$As$_2$ insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above $T_{\rm N}$, typical quadrupolar-split $^{75}$As-NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The $^{75}$As quadrupolar frequency $ν_{\rm Q}$ for CaMn$_2$As$_2$ decreases with decreasing temperature, while $ν_{\rm Q}$ for SrMn$_2$As$_2$ increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct $^{75}$As NMR lines were observed in SrMn$_2$As$_2$ and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields $H$ $||$ $c$ axis and $H$ $||$ $ab$ plane, suggesting that the internal fields $B_{\rm int}$ at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of $B_{\rm int}$ was observed in SrMn$_2$As$_2$, which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn$_2$As$_2$, broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn$_2$As$_2$ in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of $B_{\rm int}$ at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn$_2$As$_2$ was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the $ab$ plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn$_2$As$_2$ and SrMn$_2$As$_2$ show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$ in the paramagnetic state. 1/$T_1$ for $H$ $||$ $ab$ is much larger than that for $H$ $|| $c$, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

Emergence of ferromagnetism due to Ir substitutions in single-crystalline Ba[Co(1 x)Ir(x)]2As2

The ternary-arsenide compound BaCo2As2 was previously proposed to be in proximity to a quantum-critical point where long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order is suppressed by quantum fluctuations. Here we report the effect of Ir substitution for Co on the magnetic and thermal properties of Ba[Co(1-x)Ir(x)]2As2 (0 <= x <= 0.25) single crystals. These compositions all crystallize in an uncollapsed body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure with space group I4/mmm. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal clear signatures of FM ordering for x >= 0.11 with a nearly composition-independent Curie temperature TC = 13 K. The small variation of TC with x, the occurrence of hysteresis in magnetization versus field isotherms at low field and temperature, very small spontaneous and remanent magnetizations < 0.01 muB/f.u., and thermomagnetic irreversibility in the low-temperature region together indicate that the FM response arises from short-range FM ordering of spin clusters as previously inferred to occur in Ca[Co{1-x}Ir{x}]{2-y}As2. Heat-capacity Cp(T) data do not exhibit any clear feature around TC, further indicating that the FM ordering is short-range and/or associated with itinerant moments. The Cp(T) in the paramagnetic temperature regime 25-300 K is well described by the sum of a Sommerfeld electronic contribution and Debye and Einstein lattice contributions where the latter suggests the occurrence of low-frequency optic modes associated with the heavy Ba atoms in the crystals.

Ferromagnetic cluster-glass phase in Ca(Co,Ir)2As2 crystals

Single crystals of Ca[Co_(2-x)Ir_(x)]_(2-y)As2 with 0 <= x <= 0.35 and 0.10 <= y <= 0.14 have been grown using the self-flux technique and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetization M and magnetic susceptibility chi measurements versus temperature T, magnetic field H, and time t, and heat capacity Cp(H,T) measurements. The XRD refinements reveal that all the Ir-substituted crystals crystallize in a collapsed-tetragonal structure as does the parent CaCo_(2-y)As2 compound. A small 3.3% Ir substitution for Co in CaCo_(1.86)As2 drastically lowers the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature TN from 52 to 23 K with a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld electronic heat-capacity coefficient. The positive Weiss temperatures obtained from Curie-Weiss fits to the chi(T>TN) data indicate that the dominant magnetic interactions are ferromagnetic (FM) for all x. A magnetic phase boundary is inferred to be present between x = 0.14 and x = 0.17 from a discontinuity in the x dependences of the effective moment and Weiss temperature in the Curie-Weiss fits. FM fluctuations that strongly increase with increasing x are also revealed from the chi(T) data. The magnetic ground state for x >= 0.17 is a spin glass as indicated by hysteresis in chi(T) between field-cooling and zero-field-cooling measurements and from the relaxation of M in a small field that exhibits a stretched-exponential time dependence. The spin glass has a small FM component to the ordering and is hence inferred to be comprised of small FM clusters. A logarithmic T dependence of Cp at low T for x = 0.14 is consistent with the presence of significant FM quantum fluctuations. This composition is near the T = 0 boundary at x = 0.16 between the A-type AFM phase containing ferromagnetically-aligned layers of spins and the FM cluster-glass phase.

Instability and evolution of the magnetic ground state in metallic perovskites GdRh$_3$C$_{1-x}$B$_x$

We report investigations of the structural, magnetic, electrical transport and thermal properties of five compositions of the metallic perovskite GdRh$_3$C$_{1-x}$B$_x$ ($0.00 \le x \le 1.00$). Our results show that all the five compositions undergo magnetic ordering at low temperatures, but the nature of the ordered state is significantly different in the carbon- and the boron-rich compositions, where the former shows signatures of an amplitude-modulated magnetic structure and the latter exhibits evidences of an equal-moment incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. We also observe a remarkable field-dependent evolution of conduction carrier polarization in the compositionally disordered compounds. The outcomes indicate that this system is energetically situated in proximity to a magnetic instability where small variations in the control parameter(s), such as lattice constant and/or electron density, lead to considerably different ground states.

Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe2As2 revealed by 153Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties.Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields $H_{\rm ext}$ greater than the typical lab-scale magnetic fields 10--15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane $H_{\rm ext} \sim$ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. Here, using $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu$^{2+}$ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane $H_{\rm ext}$. Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Magnetic phase transitions in Eu(Co,Ni)2As2 single crystals

The effects of Ni doping in Eu(Co{1-x}Ni{x})2As2 single crystals with x =0 to 1 grown out of self flux are investigated via crystallographic, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermal measurements. All compositions adopt the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure with space group I4/mmm. We also find 3-4% of randomly-distributed vacancies on the Co/Ni site. Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data versus temperature T show clear signatures of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) c-axis helix structure associated with the Eu{+2} spins-7/2 for x = 0 and x = 1 as previously reported. The chi(T) data for x = 0.03 and 0.10 suggest an anomalous 2q magnetic structure containing two helix axes along the c axis and in the ab plane, respectively, whereas for x = 0.75 and 0.82, a c-axis helix is inferred as previously found for x = 0 and 1. At intermediate compositions x = 0.2, 0.32, 0.42, 0.54, and 0.65 a magnetic structure with a large ferromagnetic (FM) c-axis component is found from magnetization versus field isotherms, suggested to be an incommensurate FM cone structure associated with the Eu spins, which consists of both AFM and FM components. In addition, the chi(T) and heat capacity data for x = 0.2--0.65 indicate the occurrence of itinerant FM order associated with the Co/Ni atoms with Curie temperatures from 60 K to 25 K, respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate metallic character for all compositions with abrupt increases in slope on cooling below the Eu AFM transition temperatures. In addition to this panoply of magnetic transitions, {151}Eu Mossbauer measurements indicate that ordering of the Eu moments proceeds via an incommensurate sine amplitude-modulated structure with additional transition temperatures associated with this effect.

Magnetic, thermal, and electronic-transport properties of EuMg2Bi2 single crystals

The trigonal compound EuMg2Bi2 has recently been discussed in terms of its topological band properties. These are intertwined with its magnetic properties. Here detailed studies of the magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of EuMg2Bi2 single crystals are presented. The Eu{+2} spins-7/2 in EuMg2Bi2 exhibit an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at a temperature TN = 6.7 K, as previously reported. By analyzing the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi data below TN in terms of molecular-field theory (MFT), the AFM structure is inferred to be a c-axis helix, where the ordered moments in the hexagonal ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane with a turn angle between the moments in adjacent moment planes along the c axis of about 120 deg. The magnetic heat capacity exhibits a lambda anomaly at TN with evidence of dynamic short-range magnetic fluctuations both above and below TN. The high-T limit of the magnetic entropy is close to the theoretical value for spins-7/2. The in-plane electrical resistivity rho(T) data indicate metallic character with a mild and disorder-sensitive upturn below Tmin = 23 K. An anomalous rapid drop in rho(T) on cooling below TN as found in zero field is replaced by a two-step decrease in magnetic fields. The rho(T) measurements also reveal an additional transition below TN in applied fields of unknown origin that is not observed in the other measurements and may be associated with an incommensurate to commensurate AFM transition. The dependence of TN on the c-axis magnetic field Hperp was derived from the field-dependent chi(T), Cp(T), and rho(T) measurements. This TN(Hperp) was found to be consistent with the prediction of MFT for a c-axis helix with S = 7/2 and was used to generate a phase diagram in the Hperp-T plane.

Zero-field magnetic ground state of EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$

Layered trigonal EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ is reported to be a topological semimetal that hosts multiple Dirac points that may be gapped or split by the onset of magnetic order. Here, we report zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements versus temperature $χ(T)$ of EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ that show the intraplane ordering is ferromagnetic (Eu$^{2+},\, S= 7/2$) with the moments aligned in the $ab$-plane while adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically (i.e., A-type antiferromagnetism) below the Néel temperature.

Localized Singlets and Ferromagnetic Fluctuations in the Dilute Magnetic Topological Insulator Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te

The development of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in dilute magnetic topological insulators can induce dissipationless electronic surface transport via the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We measure the magnetic excitations in a prototypical magnetic topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te, using inelastic neutron scattering. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that our Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te sample has no FM long-range order above a temperature of 2 K. However, we observe slow, collective FM fluctuations ($<$~70 $μ$eV), indicating proximity to FM order. We also find a series of sharp peaks originating from local excitations of antiferromagnetically (AF) coupled and isolated Mn-Mn dimers with $J_{\rm AF}=460$~$μ$eV\@. The simultaneous presence of collective and localized components in the magnetic spectra highlight different roles for substituted Mn ions, with competition between FM order and the formation of AF-coupled Mn-Mn dimers.

Orbital- and spin-driven lattice instabilities in quasi-one-dimensional CaV$_2$O$_4$

Calcium vanadate CaV$_2$O$_4$ has a crystal structure of quasi-one-dimensional zigzag chains composed of orbital-active V$^{3+}$ ions and undergoes successive structural and antiferromagnetic phase transitions at $T_s\sim 140$ K and $T_N \sim 70$ K, respectively. We perform ultrasound velocity measurements on a single crystal of CaV$_2$O$_4$. The temperature dependence of its shear elastic moduli exhibits huge Curie-type softening upon cooling that emerges above and below $T_s$ depending on the elastic mode. The softening above $T_s$ suggests the presence of either onsite Jahn-Teller-type or intersite ferro-type orbital fluctuations in the two inequivalent V$^{3+}$ zigzag chains. The softening below $T_s$ suggests the occurrence of a dimensional spin-state crossover, from quasi-one to three, that is driven by the spin-lattice coupling along the inter-zigzag-chain orthogonal direction. The successive emergence of the orbital- and spin-driven lattice instabilities above and below $T_s$, respectively, is unique to the orbital-spin zigzag chain system of CaV$_2$O$_4$.

Antiferromagnetism in trigonal SrMn2As2 and CaMn2As2 single crystals

Crystallographic, electronic transport, thermal and magnetic properties are reported for SrMn2As2 and CaMn2As2 single crystals grown using Sn flux. Rietveld refinements of powder x-ray diffraction data show that the two compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure (space group P-3m1), in agreement with the literature. Electrical resistivity rho versus temperature T measurements demonstrate insulating ground states for both compounds with activation energies of 85 meV for SrMn2As2 and 61 meV for CaMn2As2. In a local-moment picture, the Mn^{+2} 3d^5 ions are expected to have high-spin S = 5/2 with spectroscopic splitting factor g = 2. Magnetic susceptibility chi and heat capacity measurements versus T reveal antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions at TN = 120(2) K and 62(3) K for SrMn2As2 and CaMn2As2, respectively. The anisotropic chi(T < TN) data indicate that the hexagonal c axis is the hard axis and hence that the ordered Mn moments are aligned in the ab plane. The chi(T) for both compounds and Cp(T) data for SrMn2As2 show strong dynamic short-range AFM correlations from TN up to at least 900 K, likely associated with quasi-two-dimensional connectivity of strong AFM exchange interactions between the Mn spins within the corrugated honeycomb Mn layers parallel to the ab plane.

Collinear antiferromagnetism in trigonal SrMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ revealed by single-crystal neutron diffraction

Fe pnictides and related materials have been a topic of intense research for understanding the complex interplay between magnetism and superconductivity. Here we report on the magnetic structure of SrMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ that crystallizes in a trigonal structure ($P\bar{3}m1$) and undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_{\textrm c}$ $= 118(2)$ K. The magnetic susceptibility remains nearly constant at temperatures $T \le T_{\textrm N}$ with $\textbf{H}\parallel \textbf{c}$ whereas it decreases significantly with $\textbf{H}\parallel \textbf{ab}$. This shows that the ordered Mn moments lie in the $\textbf{ab}$-plane instead of aligning along the $\textbf{c}$-axis as in tetragonal BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements on SrMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ demonstrate that the Mn moments are ordered in a collinear Néel AFM phase with $180^\circ$ AFM alignment between a moment and all nearest neighbor moments in the basal plane and also perpendicular to it. Moreover, quasi-two-dimensional AFM order is manifested in SrMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ as evident from the temperature dependence of the order parameter.

EuCo2P2: A Model Molecular-Field Helical Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

The metallic compound EuCo2P2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure containing Eu spins 7/2 was previously shown from single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements to exhibit a helical antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below TN = 66.5 K with the helix axis along the c axis and with the ordered moments aligned within the ab-plane. Here we report crystallography, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements on single crystals of this compound. We demonstrate that EuCo2P2 is a model molecular-field helical Heisenberg antiferromagnet from comparisons of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi, high-field magnetization and magnetic heat capacity of EuCo2P2 single crystals at temperature T < TN with the predictions of our recent formulation of molecular field theory. Values of the Heisenberg exchange interactions between the Eu spins are derived from the data. The low-T magnetic heat capacity ~ T^3 arising from spin-wave excitations with no anisotropy gap is calculated and found to be comparable to the lattice heat capacity. The density of states at the Fermi energy of EuCo2P2 and the related compound BaCo2P2 are found from the heat capacity data to be large, 10 and 16 states/eV per formula unit for EuCo2P2 and BaCo2P2, respectively. These values are enhanced by a factor of ~2.5 above those found from DFT electronic structure calculations for the two compounds. The calculations also find ferromagnetic Eu-Eu exchange interactions within the ab-plane and AFM interactions between nearest- and next-nearest planes, in agreement with the MFT analysis of chi{ab}(T < TN).

Metallic behavior induced by potassium doping of the trigonal antiferromagnetic insulator EuMn2As2

We report magnetic susceptibility χ, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity C_p and electrical resistivity ρmeasurements on undoped EuMn2As2 and K-doped Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 and Eu0.93K0.07Mn2As2 single crystals with the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H. EuMn2As2 has an insulating ground state with an activation energy of 52 meV and exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu+2 spins S=7/2 at T_N1 = 15 K from C_p(T) and χ(T) data with a likely spin-reorientation transition at T_N2 = 5.0 K. The Mn+2 3d5 spins-5/2 exhibit AFM ordering at T_N = 142 K from all three types of measurements. The M(H) isotherm and χ(T) data indicate that the Eu AFM structure is both noncollinear and noncoplanar. The AFM structure of the Mn spins is also unclear. A 4% substitution of K for Eu in Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 is sufficient to induce a metallic ground state. Evidence is found for a difference in the AFM structure of the Eu moments in the metallic crystals from that of undoped EuMn2As2 versus both T and H. For metallic Eu0.96K0.04Mn2As2 and Eu0.93K0.07Mn2As2, an anomalous S-shape T dependence of ρrelated to the Mn magnetism is found. Upon cooling from 200 K, ρexhibits a strong negative curvature, reaches maximum positive slope at the Mn T_N ~ 150 K, and then continues to decrease but more slowly below T_N. This suggests that dynamic short-range AFM order of the Mn spins above the Mn T_N strongly suppresses the resistivity, contrary to the conventional decrease of ρthat is only observed upon cooling below T_N of an antiferromagnet.

Volovik Effect and Fermi-Liquid Behavior in the s-Wave Superconductor CaPd2As2: 75As NMR-NQR Measurements

The electronic and magnetic properties of the collapsed-tetragonal CaPd$_2$As$_2$ superconductor (SC) with a transition temperature of 1.27 K have been investigated by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_1$) and the Knight shifts indicate the absence of magnetic correlations in the normal state. In the SC state, 1/$T_1$ measured by $^{75}$As NQR shows a clear Hebel-Slichter (HS) peak just below $T_{\rm c}$ and decreases exponentially at lower $T$, confirming a conventional $s$-wave SC. In addition, the Volovik effect, also known as Doppler shift effect, has been clearly evidenced by the observation of the suppression of the HS peak with applied magnetic field.

Antiferromagnetism in EuCu2As2 and EuCu1.82Sb2 Single Crystals

Single crystals of EuCu2As2 and EuCu2Sb2 were grown from CuAs and CuSb self-flux, respectively. The crystallographic, magnetic, thermal and electronic transport properties of the single crystals were investigated by room-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility χversus temperature T, isothermal magnetization M versus magnetic field H, specific heat Cp(T) and electrical resistivity ρ(T) measurements. EuCu2As2 crystallizes in the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm), whereas EuCu2Sb2 crystallizes in the related primitive tetragonal CaBe2Ge2-type structure (space group P4/nmm). The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and XRD data for the EuCu2Sb2 crystals showed the presence of vacancies on the Cu sites, yielding the actual composition EuCu1.82Sb2. The ρ(T) and Cp(T) data reveal metallic character for both EuCu2As2 and EuCu1.82Sb2. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is indicated from the χ(T), Cp(T), and ρ(T) data for both EuCu2As2 (T_N = 17.5 K) and EuCu1.82Sb2 (T_N = 5.1 K). In EuCu1.82Sb2, the ordered-state χ(T) and M(H) data suggest either a collinear A-type AFM ordering of Eu+2 spins S=7/2 or a planar noncollinear AFM structure, with the ordered moments oriented in the tetragonal ab plane in either case. This ordered-moment orientation for the A-type AFM is consistent with calculations with magnetic dipole interactions. The anisotropic χ(T) and isothermal M(H) data for EuCu2As2, also containing Eu+2 spins S=7/2, strongly deviate from the predictions of molecular field theory for collinear AFM ordering and the AFM structure appears to be both noncollinear and noncoplanar.

Ba{0.4}Rb{0.6}Mn2As2: A Prototype Half-Metallic Ferromagnet

Half-metallic ferromagnetism (FM) in single-crystal Ba{0.39(1)}Rb{0.61(1)}Mn2As2 below its Curie temperature TC = 103(2) K is reported. The magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm data at 1.8 K show complete polarization of the itinerant doped-hole magnetic moments that are introduced by substituting Rb for Ba. The material exhibits extremely soft FM, with unobservably small remanent magnetization and coercive field. Surprisingly, and contrary to typical itinerant FMs, the M(H) data follow the Arrott-plot paradigm that is based on a mean-field theory of local-moment FMs. The in-plane electrical resistivity data are fitted well by an activated-T^2 expression for T < TC, whereas the data sharply deviate from this model for T > TC. Hence the activated-T^2 resistivity model is an excellent diagnostic for determining the onset of half-metallic FM in this compound, which in turn demonstrates the presence of a strong correlation between the electronic transport and magnetic properties of the material. Together with previous data on 40% hole-doped Ba{0.6}K{0.4}Mn2As2, these measurements establish 61%-doped Ba{0.39}Rb{0.61}Mn2As2 as a prototype for a new class of half-metallic ferromagnets in which all the itinerant carriers in the material are ferromagnetic.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin correlations in SrCo2As2 revealed by 59Co and 75As NMR

In nonsuperconducting, metallic paramagnetic SrCo2As2, inelastic neutron scattering measurements have revealed strong stripe-type $χ$(q) = ($π$,0) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on 59Co and 75As nuclei, we demonstrate that stronger ferromagnetic (FM) spin correlations coexist in SrCo2As2. Our NMR data are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations which show enhancements at both q = ($π$,0) and the in-plane FM q = 0 wavevectors in static magnetic susceptibility $χ$(q). We suggest that the strong FM fluctuations prevent superconductivity in SrCo2As2, despite the presence of stripe-type AFM fluctuations. Furthermore, since DFT calculations have consistently revealed similar enhancements of the $χ$(q) at both q = ($π$,0) and q = 0 in the iron-based superconductors and parent compounds, our observation of FM correlations in SrCo2As2 calls for detailed studies of FM correlations in the iron-based superconductors.

Competing Magnetic Fluctuations in Iron Pnictide Superconductors: Role of Ferromagnetic Spin Correlations Revealed by NMR

In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wavevectors. However, the possible existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using $^{75}$As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. These FM fluctuations appear to compete with superconductivity and are thus a crucial ingredient to understanding the variability of $T_{\rm c}$ and the shape of the superconducting dome in these and other iron-pnictide families.

EuCo2P2: A Model Molecular-Field Helical Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

The Eu spins-7/2 in EuCo2P2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure have the prototypical noncollinear helical antiferromagnetic structure below the Neel temperature TN = 66.5 K as previously determined from single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The helix axis is along the c axis with the ordered moments aligned within the ab plane. Our recent formulation of molecular field theory (MFT) is found to quantitatively fit the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of single-crystal EuCo2P2 at T < TN with a helix turn angle comparable to the neutron diffraction value. The experimental and MFT magnetic heat capacities at T < TN are also in good agreement. Values of the Heisenberg exchange interactions between the Eu spins-7/2 within the J0-Jz1-Jz2 MFT model are derived. The results demonstrate the robust applicability of the MFT to model the thermodynamic properties of noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Itinerant ferromagnetism in the As 4$p$ conduction band of Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ identified by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on single-crystal and powder samples of Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ show that the ferromagnetism below $T_{\textrm{C}}\approx$ 100 K arises in the As $4p$ conduction band. No XMCD signal is observed at the Mn x-ray absorption edges. Below $T_{\textrm{C}}$, however, a clear XMCD signal is found at the As $K$ edge which increases with decreasing temperature. The XMCD signal is absent in data taken with the beam directed parallel to the crystallographic $\textrm{c}$ axis indicating that the orbital magnetic moment lies in the basal plane of the tetragonal lattice. These results show that the previously reported itinerant ferromagnetism is associated with the As $4p$ conduction band and that distinct local-moment antiferromagnetism and itinerant ferromagnetism with perpendicular easy axes coexist in this compound at low temperature.

Pressure-induced collapsed-tetragonal phase in SrCo2As2

We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p = 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1 GPa, and electrical resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on SrCo2As2. Our x-ray diffraction data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal (T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6 GPa at T = 7 K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature independent. The compressibility along the a-axis is the same for the T and cT phases whereas, along the c-axis, the cT phase is significantly stiffer, which may be due to the formation of an As-As bond in the cT phase. Our resistivity measurements found no evidence of superconductivity in SrCo2As2 for p <= 5.9 GPa and T >= 1.8 K. The resistivity data also show signatures consistent with a pressure-induced phase transition for p >= 5.5 GPa. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements performed up to 1.1 GPa in the T phase found no evidence of stripe-type or A-type antiferromagnetic ordering down to 10 K. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations demonstrate that the cT phase is the stable phase at high pressure with a c/a ratio of 2.54. Furthermore, these calculations indicate that the cT phase of SrCo2As2 should manifest either A-type antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order.

Thermodynamics of the Noninteracting Bose Gas in a Two-Dimensional Box

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of a noninteracting Bose gas of N particles in a two-dimensional box with Dirichlet boundary conditions is studied. Confirming previous work, we find that BEC occurs at finite N at low temperatures T without the occurrence of a phase transition. The conventionally-defined transition temperature TE for an infinite 3D system is shown to correspond in a 2D system with finite N to a crossover temperature between a slow and rapid increase in the fractional boson occupation N0/N of the ground state with decreasing T. We further show that TE ~ 1/log(N) at fixed area per boson, so in the thermodynamic limit there is no significant BEC in 2D at finite T. Thus, paradoxically, BEC only occurs in 2D at finite N with no phase transition associated with it. Calculations of thermodynamic properties versus T and area A are presented, including Helmholtz free energy, entropy S , pressure p, ratio of p to the energy density U/A, heat capacity at constant volume (area) CV and at constant pressure Cp, isothermal compressibility kappa_T and thermal expansion coefficient alpha_p, obtained using both the grand canonical ensemble (GCE) and canonical ensemble (CE) formalisms. The GCE formalism gives acceptable predictions for S, p, p/(U/A), kappa_T and alpha_p at large N, T and A, but fails for smaller values of these three parameters for which BEC becomes significant, whereas the CE formalism gives accurate results for all thermodynamic properties of finite systems even at low T and/or A where BEC occurs.

Crystallography and Physical Properties of BaCo2As2, Ba{0.94}K{0.06}Co2As2 and Ba{0.78}K{0.22}Co2As2

The crystallographic and physical properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of BaCo2As2 and K-doped Ba{1-x}K{x}Co2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.22) are investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization, heat capacity Cp, {75}As NMR and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T. The crystals were grown using both Sn flux and CoAs self-flux, where the Sn-grown crystals contain 1.6-2.0 mol% Sn. All samples crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm). For BaCo2As2, powder neutron diffraction data show that the c-axis lattice parameter exhibits anomalous negative thermal expansion from 10 to 300 K, whereas the a-axis lattice parameter and the unit cell volume show normal positive thermal expansion over this T range. No transitions in BaCo2As2 were found in this T range from any of the measurements. Below 40-50 K, we find rho ~ T^2 indicating a Fermi liquid ground state. A large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF) ~ 18 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions is found from low-T Cp(T) measurements, whereas the band structure calculations give D(EF) = 8.23 states/(eV f.u.). The {75}As NMR shift data versus T have the same T dependence as the chi(T) data, demonstrating that the derived chi(T) data are intrinsic. The observed {75}As nuclear spin dynamics are consistent with the presence of ferromagnetic and/or stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The crystals of Ba{0.78}K{0.22}Co2As2 were grown in Sn flux and show properties very similar to those of undoped BaCo2As2. On the other hand, the crystals from two batches of Ba{0.94}K{0.06}Co2As2 grown in CoAs self-flux show evidence of weak ferromagnetism at T < 10 K with small ordered moments at 1.8 K of 0.007 and 0.03 muB per formula unit, respectively.

Helical Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50)

Polycrystalline samples of Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi (x= 0, 0.25, 0.50) are studied using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), heat capacity Cp, magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. This system crystallizes in the primitive orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (space group Pnma) as previously reported. The rho(T) data indicate metallic behavior. The Cp(T), chi(T), and rho(T) measurements consistently indicate long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transitions with AF ordering temperatures TN = 246, 215 and 188 K for x = 0, 0.025 and 0.50, respectively. A second transition is observed at somewhat lower T for each sample from the chi(T) and rho(T) measurements, which we speculate are due to spin reorientation transitions; these second transitions are completely suppressed in H = 5.5 T. The Cp data below 10 K for each composition indicate an enhanced Sommerfeld electronic heat capacity coefficient for the series in the range gamma = 24 to 29 mJ/mol K^2. The chi(T) measurements up to 1000 K were fitted by local-moment Curie-Weiss behaviors which indicate a low Mn spin S ~ 1. The chi data below TN are analyzed using the Weiss molecular field theory for a planar noncollinear helical AF structure with a composition-dependent pitch, following the previous neutron diffraction work of Venturini et al. [J. Alloys Compd. 256, 65 (1997)]. Within this model, the fits indicate a turn angle between Mn moments along the helix axis of ~100 degrees or ~145 degrees, either of which indicate dominant AF interactions between the Mn spins in the Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi series of compounds.

Magnetic susceptibility of frustrated spin-s J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg magnets: High-temperature expansion and exact diagonalization data

Motivated by recent experiments on low-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets with competing nearest-neighbor exchange coupling J1 and next nearest-neighbor exchange coupling J2 we investigate the magnetic susceptibility of two-dimensional J1-J2 Heisenberg models with arbitrary spin quantum number s. We use exact diagonalization and high-temperature expansion up to order 10 to analyze the influence of the frustration strength J2/J1 and the spin quantum number s on the position and the height of the maximum of the susceptibility. The derived theoretical data can be used to get information on the ratio J2/J1 by comparing with susceptibility measurements on corresponding magnetic compounds.

Magnetic transitions in the spin S=5/2 frustrated magnet BiMn2PO6 and strong lattice softening in BiMn2PO6 and BiZn2PO6 below 200 K

The crystallographic, magnetic and thermal properties of BiMn2PO6 and BiZn2PO6 were investigated by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility χ, heat capacity Cp, and 31P NMR measurements as well as by density-functional band-theory calculations. Both compounds show a strong monotonic lattice softening on cooling, where the Debye temperature decreases by a factor of two from Θ_D=650K at T=300K to Θ_D=300K at T=2K. The χ(T) data for BiMn2PO6 above 150K follow a Curie-Weiss law with a Curie constant consistent with a S=5/2 with g=2 and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Weiss temperature θ_CW= -78K. The χdata indicate long-range AFM ordering below TN=30K, confirmed by a sharp lambda-type peak in Cp(T) at 28.8K. The band-theory calculations indicate that BiMn2PO6 is an AFM compound with dominant interactions J1/kB= 6.7K and J3/kB= 5.6K along the legs and rungs of a two-leg spin-ladder, respectively. In addition to the long-range AFM ordering at TN=30K, a second transition at 10 K is observed from the χand NMR measurements but is not evident in the Cp data. The Cp data at low T suggest a significant contribution from AFM spin waves moving in three dimensions and the absence of a spin-wave gap. A detailed analysis of the NMR spectra indicates commensurate magnetic order between 10K and 30K and a possible incommensurate modulation and/or spin canting below 10K. The commensurate order is consistent with microscopic simulations that yield a collinear Neel-type AFM spin arrangement both within and between the ladders, despite the presence of multiple weak interactions frustrating this magnetic structure. Frustration for AFM ordering and 1D spatial anisotropy of the 3D spin interactions are manifested in the frustration ratio f=|θCW|/TN=2.6, indicating a suppression of TN from 68K in the absence of these effects to 30K in BiMn2PO6.

Physical properties of EuPd2As2 single crystals

The physical properties of self-flux grown EuPd2As2 single crystals have been investigated by magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystal structure was determined by powder x-ray diffraction measurements, which confirmed the ThCr2Si2-type body-centered tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm) reported previously. The rho(T) data indicate that state of EuPd2As2 is metallic. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering is apparent from the chi(T), Cp(T), and rho(T) measurements. For H \parallel c the chi(T) indicates two transitions at TN1 = 11.0 K and TN2 = 5.5 K, whereas for H \perp c only one transition is observed at TN1 = 11.0 K. Between TN1 and TN2 the anisotropic chi(T) data suggest a planar noncollinear AFM structure, whereas at T < TN2 the chi(T) and M(H,T) data suggest a spin reorientation transition in which equal numbers of spins cant in opposite directions out of the ab plane. We estimate the critical field at 2 K at which all Eu moments become aligned with the field to be about 22 T. The magnetic entropy at 25 K estimated from the Cp(T) measurements is about $11\%$ smaller than expected, possibly due to an inaccuracy in the lattice heat capacity contribution. An upturn in rho at T < TN1 suggests superzone energy gap formation below TN1. This behavior of rho(T < TN1) is not sensitive to applied magnetic fields up to H = 12 T.

Physical Properties of Metallic Antiferromagnetic CaCo{1.86}As2 Single Crystals

We report studies of CaCo{1.86}As2 single crystals. The electronic structure is probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of CaCo{1.86}As2 and by full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave calculations for the supercell Ca8Co15As16 (CaCo{1.88}As2). Our XRD crystal structure refinement is consistent with the previous combined refinement of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data showing a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86}As2 [D. G. Quirinale et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 174420 (2013)]. The anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data are consistent with the magnetic neutron diffraction data of Quirianale et al. that demonstrate the presence of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the easy axis being the tetragonal c axis. However, no clear evidence from the resistivity rho(T) and heat capacity Cp(T) data for a magnetic transition at TN is observed. A metallic ground state is demonstrated from band calculations and the rho(T), Cp(T) and ARPES data, and spin-polarized calculations indicate a competition between the A-type AFM and FM ground states. The Cp(T) data exhibit a large Sommerfield electronic coefficient reflecting a large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF), consistent with the band structure calculations which also indicate a large D(EF) arising from Co 3d bands. At 1.8 K the M(H) data for H|| c exhibit a well-defined first-order spin-flop transition at an applied field of 3.5 T. The small ordered moment of 0.3 muB/Co obtained from the M(H) data at low T, the large exchange enhancement of chi and the lack of a self-consistent interpretation of the chi(T) and M(H,T) data in terms of a local moment Heisenberg model together indicate that the magnetism of CaCo{1.86}As2 is itinerant.

Superconductivity and Physical Properties of CaPd2Ge2 Single Crystals

We present the superconducting and normal state properties of CaPd2Ge2 single crystal investigated by magnetic susceptibility χ, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity C_p, in-plane electrical resistivity ρand London penetration depth λversus temperature T and magnetic field H measurements. Bulk superconductivity is inferred from the ρ(T) and C_p(T) data. The ρ(T) data exhibit metallic behavior and undergoes a superconducting transition with T_c onset = 1.98 K and zero resistivity state at T_c 0 = 1.67 K. The χ(T) reveal the onset of superconductivity at 2.0 K. For T>2.0 K, the χ(T) and M(H) are weakly anisotropic paramagnetic with χ_ab > χ_c. The C_p(T) confirm the bulk superconductivity below T_c = 1.69(3) K. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity is analyzed within the framework of a single-band α-model of BCS superconductivity and various normal and superconducting state parameters are estimated. Within the α-model, the C_p(T) data and the ab plane λ(T) data consistently indicate a moderately anisotropic s-wave gap with Δ(0)/k_B T_c ~ 1.6, somewhat smaller than the BCS value of 1.764. The relationship of the heat capacity jump at T_c and the penetration depth measurement to the anisotropy in the s-wave gap is discussed.

Coexistence of Half-Metallic Itinerant Ferromagnetism with Local-Moment Antiferromagnetism in Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2

Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude and nature of the low-T FM ordered moment correspond to complete polarization of the doped-hole spins (half-metallic itinerant FM) as deduced from magnetization and ab-plane electrical resistivity measurements.

Crystallographic, Electronic, Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Single-Crystal SrCo2As2

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Elaboration of the alpha-Model Derived from the BCS Theory of Superconductivity

The single-band alpha-model of superconductivity [H. Padamsee, et al., J. Low Temp. Phys. {\bf 12}, 387 (1973)] is a popular model that was adapted from the single-band Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity mainly to allow fits to electronic heat capacity versus temperature T data that deviate from the BCS prediction. The model assumes that the normalized superconducting order parameter Delta(T)/Delta(0) and therefore the normalized London penetration depth lambda_L(T)/lambda_L(0) are the same as in BCS theory, calculated using the BCS value alpha_BCS = 1.764 of alpha = Delta(0)/(kB Tc), where kB is Boltzmann's constant and Tc is the superconducting transition temperature. On the other hand, to calculate the electronic free energy, entropy, heat capacity and thermodynamic critical field versus T, the alpha-model takes alpha to be an adjustable parameter. Here we write the BCS equations and limiting behaviors for the superconducting state thermodynamic properties explicitly in terms of alpha, as needed for calculations within the alpha-model, and present plots of the results versus T and alpha that are compared with the respective BCS predictions. Mechanisms such as gap anisotropy and strong coupling that can cause deviations of the thermodynamics from the BCS predictions, especially the heat capacity jump at Tc, are considered. Extensions of the alpha-model that have appeared in the literature such as the two-band model are also discussed. Tables of values of Delta(T)/Delta(0) and lambda_L(T)/lambda_L(0) calculated from the BCS theory using alpha = alpha_BCS are provided, which are the same in the alpha-model by assumption. Tables of values of the entropy, heat capacity and thermodynamic critical field versus T for seven values of alpha including alpha_BCS are also presented.

Experimental evidence of a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering in the frustrated CoAl2O4 spinel

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffaction (ND), x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the frustrated A-site spinel CoAl2O4 compound reveal a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below Tn = 9.8(2) K. A high quality powder sample characterized by x-ray diffraction that indicates a relatively low Co-Al inversion parameter x = 0.057(20) in (Co1-xAlx)[Al2-xCox]O4, shows a broad maximum around 15 K in magnetic susceptibility and a sharp peak at Tn in heat capacity. The average ordered magnetic moment of Co^2+ (S = 3/2) ions at the A-site is estimated to be 2.4(1) Bohr magneton from NMR and 1.9(5) Bohr magneton from ND which are smaller than the expected value of 3 Bohr magneton for S = 3/2 and g = 2. Antiferromagnetic spin uctuations and correlations in the paramagnetic state are revealed from the magnetic susceptibility, NMR and ND measurements, which are due to spin frustration and site inversion effects in the system. The ND data also show short-range dynamic magnetic ordering that persists to a temperature that is almost twice Tn.

Metal-insulator transition in antiferromagnetic $Ba_{1-x}K_xMn_2As_2$ $(0\le x\le0.4)$ single crystals studied by $^{55}$Mn and $^{75}$As NMR

The magnetic structure and metal-insulator transition in antiferromagnetic (AFM) BaMn2As2 and Ba1-xKxMn2As2 single crystals have been investigated by 55Mn and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. In the parent AFM insulator BaMn2As2 with a Neel temperature TN = 625 K, we observed a 55Mn zero-field NMR (ZFNMR) spectrum and confirmed the G-type AFM structure from the field dependence of the 55Mn spectra and 75As-NMR spectra below TN. In hole-doped crystals with x > 0.01, similar 55Mn ZFNMR spectra were observed and the AFM state was revealed to be robust up to x = 0.4 with the ordered moment nearly independent of x. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/T1) for both nuclei in the doped samples follow the Korringa relation T1T = const., indicating a metallic state. This confirms the coexistence of AFM ordered localized Mn spins and conduction carriers from a microscopic point of view. From the x-dependence of (T1T)^(-1/2) for both nuclei, we conclude that this transition is caused by vanishing of the hole concentration as the transition is approached from the metallic side.

Persistence of local-moment antiferromagnetic order in Ba(1-x)KxMn2As2

BaMn2As2 is a local-moment antiferromagnetic insulator with a Néel temperature of 625 K and a large ordered moment of 3.9 Bohr magneton per Mn. Remarkably, this compound can be driven metallic by the substitution of as little as 1.6% K for Ba while retaining essentially the same ordered magnetic moment and Néel temperature, as previously reported. Here, using both powder and single crystal neutron diffraction we show that the local moment antiferromagnetic order in Ba(1-x)KxMn2As2 remains robust up to x = 0.4. The ordered moment is nearly independent of x for 0 < x < 0.4 and the Néel transition temperature decreases to 480 K at x = 0.4.

Stripe Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of paramagnetic SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at T=5 K reveal antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations that are peaked at a wavevector of $\textbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AFM}}=(1/2,1/2,1)$ and possess a large energy scale. These stripe spin fluctuations are similar to those found in $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds, where spin-density wave AFM is driven by Fermi surface nesting between electron and hole pockets separated by $\textbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AFM}}$. SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ has a more complex Fermi surface and band structure calculations indicate a potential instability towards either a ferromagnetic or stripe AFM ground state. The results suggest that stripe AFM magnetism is a general feature of both iron and cobalt-based arsenides and the search for spin fluctuation-induced unconventional superconductivity should be expanded to include cobalt-based compounds.

The synthesis and crystallography, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M, specific heat Cp, in-plane electrical resistivity rho and in-plane magnetic penetration depth measurements are reported for single crystals of APd2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) versus temperature T and magnetic field H. The crystals were grown using PdAs self-flux. CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 crystallize in a collapsed body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (I4/mmm), whereas BaPd2As2 crystallizes in the primitive tetragonal CeMg2Si2-type structure (P4/mmm), in agreement with literature data. The rho(T) data exhibit metallic behavior for all three compounds. Bulk superconductivity is reported for CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 below Tc = 1.27 and 0.92 K, respectively, whereas only a trace of superconductivity is found in BaPd2As2. No other phase transitions were observed. The chi(T) and M(H) data reveal anisotropic diamagnetism in the normal state, with chi_c > chi_ab for CaPd2As2 and BaPd2As2, and chi_c < chi_ab for SrPd2As2. The normal and superconducting state data indicate that CaPd2As2 and SrPd2As2 are conventional type-II nodeless s-wave electron-phonon superconductors. The electronic superconducting-state heat capacity data for CaPd2As2, which has an extremely sharp heat capacity jump at Tc, are analyzed using our recent elaboration of the alpha-model of the BCS theory of superconductivity, which indicates that the s-wave gap in this compound is anisotropic in momentum space.

Antiferromagnetism in EuNiGe3

The synthesis and crystallographic and physical properties of polycrystalline EuNiGe3 are reported. EuNiGe3 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure. The physical property data consistently demonstrate that this is a metallic system in which Eu spins S = 7/2 order antiferromagnetically at a temperature TN = 13.6 K. Magnetic susceptibility chi data for T > TN indicate that the Eu atoms have spin 7/2 with g = 2, that the Ni atoms are nonmagnetic, and that the dominant interactions between the Eu spins are ferromagnetic. Thus we propose that EuNiGe3 has a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic structure. A fit of chi(T < TN) by our molecular field theory is consistent with a collinear magnetic structure. Electrical resistivity rho data from TN to 350 K are fitted by the Bloch-Gruneisen model for electron-phonon scattering, yielding a Debye temperature of 265(2) K. A strong decrease in rho occurs below TN due to loss of spin-disorder scattering. Heat capacity data at 25 K < T < 300 K are fitted by the Debye model, yielding the same Debye temperature 268(2) K as found from rho(T). The extracted magnetic heat capacity is consistent with S = 7/2. The magnetic entropy at TN = 13.6 K is 83% of the expected asymptotic high-T value, with the remainder recovered by 30 K.

Ba{1-x}KxMn2As2: An Antiferromagnetic Local-Moment Metal

The compound BaMn2As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is a local-moment antiferromagnetic insulator with a Neel temperature TN = 625 K and a large ordered moment mu = 3.9 mu_B/Mn. We demonstrate that this compound can be driven metallic by partial substitution of Ba by K, while retaining the same crystal and antiferromagnetic structures together with nearly the same high TN and large mu. Ba_{1-x}K_xMn2As2 is thus the first metallic ThCr2Si2-type MAs-based system containing local 3d transition metal M magnetic moments, with consequences for the ongoing debate about the local moment versus itinerant pictures of the FeAs-based superconductors and parent compounds. The Ba_{1-x}K_xMn2As2 class of compounds also forms a bridge between the layered iron pnictides and cuprates and may be useful to test theories of high Tc superconductivity.

Crystal Growth and Physical Properties of SrCu2As2, SrCu2Sb2 and BaCu2Sb2

We report the growth of single crystals of SrCu2As2, SrCu2Sb2, SrCu2(As{0.84}Sb{0.16})2 and BaCu2Sb2 using the self-flux technique and their structural, magnetic, thermal and transport properties that were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility chi, specific heat Cp and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T from 1.8 to 350 K. Rietveld refinements of XRD patterns for crushed crystals confirm that SrCu2As2 crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type structure and SrCu2Sb2 crystallizes in the CaBe2Ge2-type structure. However, BaCu2Sb2 is found to have a large unit cell consisting of three blocks. Here a ThCr2Si2-type block is sandwiched between two CaBe2Ge2-type blocks along the c-axis, as reported, but likely with a monoclinic distortion. The chi data of all these compounds are diamagnetic and reveal nearly T-independent anisotropic behavior. The finite values of the Sommerfeld linear specific heat coefficients gamma and the T dependences of rho reveal metallic character of all four compounds. The electronic and magnetic properties indicate that these compounds are sp metals with Cu in the 3d^{10} electronic configuration corresponding to the oxidation state Cu^{+1}, as previously predicted theoretically for (Sr,Ba)Cu2As2 by D. J. Singh. We find that SrCu2As2 has a collapsed-tetragonal structure. The electronic character of the Cu and the strength of the As-As interlayer bonding are both expected to drastically change between weakly Cu-substituted BaFe2As and pure BaCu2As2.

Magnetic Susceptibility of Collinear and Noncollinear Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Predictions of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperatures TN of local moment Heisenberg AFMs have been made previously using molecular field theory (MFT) but are very limited in their applicability. Here a MFT calculation of chi(T<=TN) is presented for a wide variety of collinear and noncollinear Heisenberg AFMs containing identical crystallographically equivalent spins without recourse to magnetic sublattices. The results are expressed in terms of directly measurable experimental parameters and are fitted with no adjustable parameters to experimental chi(T<=TN) data from the literature for several collinear and noncollinear AFMs. The influence of spin correlations and fluctuations beyond MFT is quantified by the deviation of the theory from the data. The origin of the universal chi(T<=TN) observed for triangular lattice AFMs exhibiting coplanar noncollinear 120 degree AFM ordering is clarified.

Observation of a Phase Transition at 55 K in Single-Crystal CaCu1.7As2

We present the structural, magnetic, thermal and ab-plane electronic transport properties of single crystals of CaCu1.7As2 grown by the self-flux technique that were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, isothermal magnetization M, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H. X-ray diffraction analysis of crushed crystals at room temperature confirm the collapsed tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with \sim 15% vacancies on the Cu sites as previously reported, corresponding to the composition CaCu1.7As2. The chi(T) data are diamagnetic, anisotropic and nearly independent of T. The chi is larger in the ab-plane than along the c-axis, as also observed previously for SrCu2As2 and for pure and doped BaFe2As2. The Cp(T) and rho(T) data indicate metallic sp-band character. In contrast to the chi(T) and Cp(T) data that do not show any evidence for phase transitions below 300 K, the rho(T) data exhibit a sharp increase in slope on cooling below a temperature Tt = 54-56 K, depending on the crystal. The ρ(T) data show no hysteresis on warming and cooling through Tt and the transition appears to be second order. The phase transition may arise from spatial ordering of the vacancies on the Cu sublattice. The Tt is found to be independent of H for H \leq 8 T. A positive magnetoresistance is observed below Tt that increases with decreasing T and attains a value in H = 8.0 T of 8.7% at T = 1.8 K.

Structural, Thermal, Magnetic and Electronic Transport Properties of the LaNi2(Ge{1-x}P{x})2 System

Polycrystalline samples of LaNi2(Ge{1-x}P{x})2 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1) were synthesized and their properties investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T. These compounds all crystallize in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure. The rho(T) measurements indicate that all compositions in this system are metallic. The low-T Cp measurements yield a rather large Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 12.4(2) mJ/mol K^2 for x = 0 reflecting a large density of states at the Fermi energy that is comparable with the largest values found for the AFe2As2 class of materials with the same crystal structure. The gamma decreases approximately linearly with x to 7.4(1) mJ/mol K^2 for x = 1. The chi measurements show nearly temperature-independent paramagnetic behavior across the entire range of compositions except for LaNi2Ge2, where a broad peak is observed at 300 K from chi(T) measurements up to 1000 K that may arise from short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in a quasi-two-dimensional magnetic system. High-accuracy Pade approximants representing the Debye lattice heat capacity and Bloch-Gruneisen electron-phonon resistivity functions versus T are presented and are used to analyze our experimental Cp(T) and rho(T) data, respectively. The T-dependences of rho for all samples are well-described by the Bloch-Gruneisen model, although the observed rho(300 K) values are larger than calculated from this model. A significant T-dependence of the Debye temperature determined from the Cp(T) data was observed for each composition. No clear evidence for bulk superconductivity or any other long-range phase transition was found for any of the compositions studied.

Large Miscibility Gap in the Ba(Mn_xFe_{1-x})2As2 System

The compounds BaMn2As2 and BaFe2As2 both crystallize in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type (122-type) structure at room temperature but exhibit quite different unit cell volumes and very different magnetic and electronic transport properties. Evidently reflecting these disparities, we have discovered a large miscibility gap in the system Ba(Mn_xFe_{1-x})2As2. Rietveld refinements of powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on samples slow-cooled from 1000 C to room temperature (RT) reveal a two-phase mixture of BaMn2As2 and Ba(Mn_{0.12}Fe_{0.88})2As2 phases together with impurity phases for x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8. We infer that there exists a miscibility gap in this system at 300 K with composition limits 0.12 < x < 1. For samples quenched from 1000 C to 77 K, the refinements of RT XRD data indicate that the miscibility gap at RT narrows at 1000 C to 0.2 < x < 0.8. Samples with x=0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 quenched from 1100-1400 C to 77 K contain a single 122-type phase together with significant amounts of Fe_{1-x}Mn_xAs and FeAs2 impurity phases. These results indicate that the system is not a pseudo-binary system over the whole composition range and that the 122-type phase has a significant homogeneity range at these temperatures. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements versus temperature of the single-phase quenched polycrystalline samples with x = 0.2 and 0.8 and for lightly doped BaMn2As2 crystals are reported.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in BaMn2As2: A Case Study of the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg Model

BaMn2As2 is unique among BaT2As2 compounds crystallizing in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, which contain stacked square lattices of 3d transition metal T atoms, since it has an insulating large-moment (3.9 muB/Mn) G-type (checkerboard) antiferromagnetic AF ground state. We report measurements of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T from 300 to 1000 K of single crystals of BaMn2As2, and magnetic inelastic neutron scattering measurements at 8 K and 75As NMR measurements from 4 to 300 K of polycrystalline samples. The Neel temperature determined from the chi(T) measurements is TN = 618(3) K. The measurements are analyzed using the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model. Linear spin wave theory for G-type AF ordering and classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and molecular field theory calculations of chi(T) and of the magnetic heat capacity Cmag(T) are presented versus J1, J2 and Jc. We also obtain band theoretical estimates of the exchange couplings in BaMn2As2. From analyses of our chi(T), NMR, neutron scattering, and previously published heat capacity data for BaMn2As2 on the basis of the above theories for the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model and our band-theoretical results, our best estimates of the exchange constants in BaMn2As2 are J1 = 13 meV, J2/J1 = 0.3 and Jc/J1 = 0.1, which are all antiferromagnetic. From our classical Monte Carlo simulations of the G-type AF ordering transition, these exchange parameters predict TN = 640 K for spin S = 5/2, in close agreement with experiment. Using spin wave theory, we also utilize these exchange constants to estimate the suppression of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations for comparison with the observed value and again obtain S = 5/2 for the Mn spin.

Phase separation and frustrated square lattice magnetism of Na1.5VOPO4F0.5

Crystal structure, electronic structure, and magnetic behavior of the spin-1/2 quantum magnet Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 are reported. The disorder of Na atoms leads to a sequence of structural phase transitions revealed by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and electron diffraction. The high-temperature second-order alpha <--> beta transition at 500 K is of the order-disorder type, whereas the low-temperature beta <--> gamma+gamma' transition around 250 K is of the first order and leads to a phase separation toward the polymorphs with long-range (gamma) and short-range (gamma') order of Na. Despite the complex structural changes, the magnetic behavior of Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 probed by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance measurements is well described by the regular frustrated square lattice model of the high-temperature alpha-polymorph. The averaged nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings are J1 ~ -3.7 K and J2 ~ 6.6 K, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance further reveals the long-range ordering below TN = 2.6 K in low magnetic fields. Although the experimental data are consistent with the simplified square-lattice description, band structure calculations suggest that the ordering of Na atoms introduces a large number of inequivalent exchange couplings that split the square lattice into plaquettes. Additionally, the direct connection between the vanadium polyhedra induces an unusually strong interlayer coupling having effect on the transition entropy and the transition anomaly in the specific heat. Peculiar features of the low-temperature crystal structure and the relation to isostructural materials suggest Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 as a parent compound for the experimental study of tetramerized square lattices as well as frustrated square lattices with different values of spin.

Multi-gap superconductivity and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in single crystals of the layered boride OsB_2

Single crystals of superconducting OsB_2 [T_c = 2.10(5) K] have been grown using a Cu-B eutectic flux. We confirm that OsB_2 crystallizes in the reported orthorhombic structure (space group Pmmn) at room temperature. Both the normal and superconducting state properties of the crystals are studied using various techniques. Heat capacity versus temperature C(T) measurements yield the normal state electronic specific heat coefficient γ= 1.95(1) mJ/mol K^2 and the Debye temperature Θ_D = 539(2) K. The measured frequencies of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are in good agreement with those predicted by band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility χ(T,H), electrical resistivity ρ(T) and C(T,H) measurements (H is the magnetic field) demonstrate that OsB_2 is a bulk low-κ[κ(T_c) = 2(1)] Type-II superconductor that is intermediate between the clean and dirty limits [ξ(T=0)/\ell = 0.97)] with a small upper critical magnetic field H_c2(T = 0) = 186(4) Oe. The penetration depth is λ(T = 0) = 0.300 μm. An anomalous (not single-gap BCS) T dependence of λwas fitted by a two-gap model with Δ_1(T = 0)/k_BT_c = 1.9 and Δ_2(T = 0)/k_BT_c = 1.25, respectively. The discontinuity in the heat capacity at T_c, ΔC/γT_c = 1.32, is smaller than the weak-coupling BCS value of 1.43, consistent with the two-gap nature of the superconductivity in OsB_2. An anomalous increase in ΔC at T_c of unknown origin is found in finite H; e.g., ΔC/γT_c \approx 2.5 for H \approx 25 Oe.

Synthesis, Structure and Properties of Tetragonal Sr2M3As2O2 (M3 = Mn3, Mn2Cu and MnZn2) Compounds Containing Alternating CuO2-Type and FeAs-Type Layers

Polycrystalline samples of Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2, Sr2Mn3As2O2, and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2 were synthesized. Their temperature- and applied magnetic field-dependent structural, transport, thermal, and magnetic properties were characterized by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These compounds have a body-centered-tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4/mmm) that consists of MO2 (M = Zn and/or Mn) oxide layers similar to the CuO2 layers in high superconducting transition temperature Tc cuprate superconductors, and intermetallic MAs (M = Cu and/or Mn) layers similar to the FeAs layers in high-Tc pnictides. These two types of layers alternate along the crystallographic c-axis and are separated by Sr atoms. The site occupancies of Mn, Cu and Zn were studied using Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. The temperature dependences of rho suggest metallic character for Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 and semiconducting character for Sr2Mn3As2O2 and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2. Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 is inferred to be a ferrimagnet with a Curie temperature TC = 95(1) K. Remarkably, we find that the magnetic ground state structure changes from a G-type antiferromagnetic structure in Sr2Mn3As2O2 to an A-type ferrimagnetic structure in Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 in which the Mn ions in each layer are ferromagnetically aligned, but are antiferromagnetically aligned between layers.

Magnetic ordering in EuRh2As2 studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Element-specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigations were performed to determine the magnetic structure of Eu in EuRh2As2. In the temperature range from 46 K down to 6 K, an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (ICM)structure with a temperature dependent propagation vector (0 0 0.9) coexists with a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CM) structure. Angular-dependent measurements of the magnetic intensity indicate that the magnetic moments lie in the tetragonal basal plane and are ferromagnetically aligned within the a-b plane for both magnetic structures. The ICM structure is a spiral-like magnetic structure with a turn angle of 162 deg between adjacent Eu planes. In the CM structure, this angle is 180 deg. These results are consistent with band-structure calculations which indicate a strong sensitivity of the magnetic configuration on the Eu valence.

Magnetic, Thermal, and Transport Properties of Layered Arsenides BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2

The magnetic, thermal and transport properties of polycrystalline BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2 samples with the ThCr2Si2 structure were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi(T), electrical resistivity rho(T), and heat capacity Cp(T) measurements. The temperature (T) dependence of rho indicates metallic character for both compounds with residual resistivity ratios rho(310 K)/rho(2 K) of 17 and 5 for the Ba and Sr compounds, respectively. The Cp(T) results reveal a low-T Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 4.9(1) and 4.1(1) mJ/mol K^2 and Debye temperature Θ_D = 271(7) K and 271(4) K for the Ba and Sr compounds, respectively. The chi (T) was found to be diamagnetic with a small absolute value for both compounds. No transitions were found for BaRu2As2 above 1.8 K. The chi(T) data for SrRu2As2 exhibit a cusp at \sim 200 K, possibly an indication of a structural and/or magnetic transition. We discuss the properties of BaRu2As2 and SrRu2As2 in the context of other ThCr2Si2-type and ZrCuSiAs-type transition metal pnictides.

Magnetic, Thermal, and Transport Properties of the Mixed Valent Vanadium Oxides LuV4O8 and YV4O8

LV4O8 (L = Yb, Y, Lu) compounds are reported to crystallize in a structure similar to that of the orthorhombic CaFe2O4 structure-type, and contain four inequivalent V sites arranged in zigzag chains. We confirm the structure and report the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of polycrystalline YV4O8 and LuV4O8. A first-order like phase transition is observed at 50 K in both YV4O8 and LuV4O8. The symmetry remains the same with the lattice parameters changing discontinously. The structural transition in YV4O8 leads to partial dimerization of the V atoms resulting in a sudden sharp drop in the magnetic susceptibility. The V spins that do not form dimers order in a canted antiferromagnetic state. The magnetic susceptibility of LuV4O8 shows a sharp peak at ~ 50 K. The magnetic entropies calculated from heat capacity versus temperature measurements indicate bulk magnetic transitions below 90 K for both YV4O8 and LuV4O8.

Magnetic, Transport, and Thermal Properties of Single Crystals of the Layered Arsenide BaMn2As2

Growth of BaMn2As2 crystals using both MnAs and Sn fluxes is reported. Room temperature crystallography, anisotropic isothermal magnetization M versus field H and magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T, electrical resistivity in the ab plane rho(T), and heat capacity C(T) measurements on the crystals were carried out. The tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure of BaMn2As2 is confirmed. After correction for traces of ferromagnetic MnAs impurity phase using M(H) isotherms, the inferred intrinsic chi(T) data of the crystals are anisotropic with chi_{ab}/chi_{c} \approx 7.5 at T = 2 K. The temperature dependences of the anisotropic chi data suggest that BaMn2As2 is a collinear antiferromagnet at room temperature with the easy axis along the c axis, and with an extrapolated Neel temperature T_N \sim 500 K. The rho(T) decreases with decreasing T below 310 K but then increases below \sim 50 K, suggesting that BaMn2As2 is a small band-gap semiconductor with an activation energy of order 0.03 eV. The C(T) data from 2 to 5 K are consistent with this insulating ground state, exhibiting a low temperature Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 0.0(4) mJ/mol K^2. The Debye temperature is determined from these data to be theta_D = 246(4) K. BaMn2As2 is a potential parent compound for ThCr2Si2-type superconductors.

Nature of the Magnetic Order in BaMn2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on a powder sample of BaMn2As2 over the temperature T range from 10 K to 675 K. These measurements demonstrate that this compound exhibits collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below the Neel temperature T_N = 625(1) K. The ordered moment mu = 3.88(4) mu_B/Mn at T = 10 K is oriented along the c axis and the magnetic structure is G-type, with all nearest-neighbor Mn moments antiferromagnetically aligned. The value of the ordered moment indicates that the oxidation state of Mn is Mn^{2+} with a high spin S = 5/2. The T dependence of mu suggests that the magnetic transition is second-order in nature. In contrast to the closely related AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) compounds, no structural distortion is observed in the magnetically ordered state of BaMn2As2.

Single Crystal 31P NMR Studies of the Frustrated Square Lattice Compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2

The static and dynamic properties of V^{4+} spins (S = 1/2) in the frustrated square lattice compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2 were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift (K) and 31P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements on a single crystal. This compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order below TN \simeq 3.65 K. NMR spectra above TN show two distinct lines corresponding to two inequivalent P sites present in the crystal structure. The observed asymmetry in hyperfine coupling constant for the in-plane (P1) P site directly points towards a distortion in the square lattice at the microscopic level, consistent with the monoclinic crystal structure. The nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings were estimated to be J1/kB = (-5.4 \pm 0.5) K (ferromagnetic) and J2/kB = (9.3 \pm 0.6) K (antiferromagnetic), respectively. 1/(T1 T chi) is almost T-independent at high temperatures due to random fluctuation of spin moments. Below 20 K, the compound shows an enhancement of 1/(T1 T chi) which arises from a growth of antiferromagnetic spin correlations above TN. Below TN and for the field applied along the c-axis, the NMR spectrum for the P1 site splits into two satellites and the spacing between them increases monotonically with decreasing T which is a direct evidence of a columnar antiferromagnetic ordering with spins lying in the ab-plane. This type of magnetic ordering is consistent with expectation from the J2/J1 \simeq -1.72 ratio. The critical exponent beta = 0.25 \pm 0.02 estimated from the temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization as measured by 31P NMR at 11.13 MHz is close to the value (0.231) predicted for the two-dimensional XY model.

Structure and magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of single crystal EuPd2Sb2

Single crystals of EuPd2Sb2 have been grown from PdSb self-flux. The properties of the single crystals have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M, electrical resistivity rho, Hall coefficient R_H, and heat capacity Cp measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. Single crystal x-ray diffraction studies confirmed that EuPd2Sb2 crystallizes in the CaBe2Ge2-type structure. The chi(T) measurements suggest antiferromagnetic ordering at 6.0 K with the easy axis or plane in the crystallographic ab plane. An additional transition occurs at 4.5 K that may be a spin reorientation transition. The Cp(T) data also show the two transitions at 6.1 K and 4.4 K, respectively, indicating the bulk nature of the transitions. The 4.4 K transition is suppressed below 1.8 K while the 6.1 K transition moves down to 3.3 K in H = 8 T. The rho(T) data show metallic behavior down to 1.8 K along with an anomaly at 5.5 K in zero field. The anomaly is suppressed to 2.7 K in an 8 T field. The R_H measurements indicated that the dominant charge carriers are electrons. The M(H) isotherms show three field-induced transitions at 2.75 T, 3.90 T, and 4.2 T magnetic fields parallel to the ab plane at 1.8 K. No transitions are observed in M(H) for fields parallel to the c axis.

Unusual Magnetic, Thermal, and Transport Behaviors of Single Crystal EuRh2As2

An antiferromagnetic transition is observed in single crystal EuRh2As2 at a high temperature T_N = 47 K compared to the ferromagnetic Weiss temperature theta = 12 K. We show that this is, surprisingly, consistent with mean field theory. A first-order field-induced magnetic transition is observed at T < T_N with an unusual temperature dependence of the transition field. A dramatic magnetic field-induced reduction of the electronic specific heat coefficient at 1.8-5.0 K by 38% at 9 T is observed. In addition, a strong positive magnetoresistance and a large change in the Hall coefficient occur below 25 K. Band structure calculations indicate that the Fermi energy lies on a steep edge of a narrow peak in the density of states.

^{7}Li NMR Study of Heavy Fermion LiV2O4 Containing Magnetic Defects

We present a systematic study of the variations of the ^{7}Li NMR properties versus magnetic defect concentration up to 0.83 mol% within the spinel structure of polycrystalline powder samples and a collection of small single crystals of LiV2O4 in the temperature range from 0.5 to 4.2 K. We also report static magnetization measurements and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements at 14 MHz on the samples at low temperatures. Both the NMR spectrum and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate are inhomogeneous in the presence of the magnetic defects. The NMR data for the powders are well explained by assuming that (i) there is a random distribution of magnetic point defects, (ii) the same heavy Fermi liquid is present in the samples containing the magnetic defects as in magnetically pure LiV2O4, and (iii) the influences of the magnetic defects and of the Fermi liquid on the magnetization and NMR properties are separable. In the single crystals, somewhat different behaviors are observed. Remarkably, the magnetic defects in the powder samples show evidence of spin freezing below T ~ 1.0 K, whereas in the single crystals with similar magnetic defect concentration no spin freezing was found down to 0.5 K. Thus different types of magnetic defects and/or interactions between them appear to arise in the powders versus the crystals, possibly due to the substantially different synthesis conditions of the powders and crystals.

Absence of structural correlations of magnetic defects in heavy fermion LiV2O4

Magnetic defects have pronounced effects on the magnetic properties of the face-centered cubic compound LiV2O4. The magnetic defects arise from crystal defects present within the normal spinel structure. High-energy x-ray diffraction studies were performed on LiV2O4 single crystals to search for superstructure peaks or any other evidence of periodicity in the arrangement of the crystal defects present in the lattice. Entire reciprocal lattice planes are mapped out with help of synchrotron radiation. No noticeable differences in the x-ray diffraction data between a crystal with high magnetic defect concentration and a crystal with low magnetic defect concentration have been found. This indicates the absence of any long-range periodicity or short-range correlations in the arrangements of the crystal/magnetic defects.

Single crystal growth and physical properties of the layered arsenide BaRh_2As_2

Single crystals of BaRh_2As_2 have been synthesized from a Pb flux. We present the room temperature crystal structure, single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements as a function of temperature T, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χversus T, electrical resistivity in the ab-plane ρversus T, Hall coefficient versus T and magnetic field H, and heat capacity C versus T measurements on the crystals. The single crystal structure determination confirms that BaRh_2As_2 forms in the tetragonal ThCr_2Si_2 type structure (space group I4/mmm) with lattice parameters a = b = 4.0564(6)Åand c = 12.797(4) Å. Band structure calculations show that BaRh_2As_2 should be metallic with a small density of states at the Fermi energy N(E_ F) = 3.49 states/eV f.u. (where f.u. \equiv formula unit) for both spin directions. ρ(T) data in the ab-plane confirm that the material is indeed metallic with a residual resistivity ρ(2K) = 29 μΩcm, and with a residual resistivity ratio ρ(310K)/ρ(2K) = 5.3. The observed χ(T) is small (\sim 10^{-5} cm^3/mol) and weakly anisotropic with χ_{ab}/χ_ c \approx 2. The C(T) data indicate a small density of states at the Fermi energy with the low temperature Sommerfeld coefficient γ= 4.7(9) mJ/mol K^2. There are no indications of superconductivity, spin density wave, or structural transitions between 2K and 300K. We compare the calculated density of states versus energy of BaRh_2As_2 with that of BaFe_2As_2.

^{17}O and ^{51}V NMR for the zigzag spin-1 chain compound CaV2O4

$^{51}$V NMR studies on CaV2O4 single crystals and $^{17}$O NMR studies on $^{17}$O-enriched powder samples are reported. The temperature dependences of the $^{17}$O NMR line width and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate give strong evidence for a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at Tn = 78 K in the powder. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that Tn = 69 K in the crystals. A zero-field $^{51}$V NMR signal was observed at low temperatures (f $\approx$ 237 MHz at 4.2 K) in the crystals. The field swept spectra with the field in different directions suggest the presence of two antiferromagnetic substructures. Each substructure is collinear, with the easy axes of the two substructures separated by an angle of 19(1) degree, and with their average direction pointing approximately along the b-axis of the crystal structure. The two spin substructures contain equal number of spins. The temperature dependence of the ordered moment, measured up to 45 K, shows the presence of an energy gap Eg in the antiferromagnetic spin wave excitation spectrum. Antiferromagnetic spin wave theory suggests that Eg lies between 64 and 98 K.

Crystallography, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity of heavy fermion LiV$_2$O$_4$ single crystals grown using a self-flux technique

Magnetically pure spinel compound ${\rm LiV_2O_4}$ is a rare $d$-electron heavy fermion. Measurements on single crystals are needed to clarify the mechanism for the heavy fermion behavior in the pure material. In addition, it is known that small concentrations ($< 1$ mol%) of magnetic defects in the structure strongly affect the properties, and measurements on single crystals containing magnetic defects would help to understand the latter behaviors. Herein, we report flux growth of ${\rm LiV_2O_4}$ and preliminary measurements to help resolve these questions. The magnetic susceptibility of some as-grown crystals show a Curie-like upturn at low temperatures, showing the presence of magnetic defects within the spinel structure. The magnetic defects could be removed in some of the crystals by annealing them at 700 $^\circ$C\@. A very high specific heat coefficient $γ$ = 450 mJ/(mol K${^2}$\@) was obtained at a temperature of 1.8 K for a crystal containing a magnetic defect concentration $n$${\rm_{defect}}$ = 0.5 mol%. A crystal with $n$${\rm _{defect}}$ = 0.01 mol% showed a residual resistivity ratio of 50.

Magnetic and thermal properties of the S = 1/2 zig-zag spin-chain compound In2VO5

Static magnetic susceptibility χ, ac susceptibility χ_{ac} and specific heat C versus temperature T measurements on polycrystalline samples of In2VO5 and χand C versus T measurements on the isostructural, nonmagnetic compound In2TiO5 are reported. A Curie-Wiess fit to the χ(T) data above 175 K for In2VO5 indicates ferromagnetic exchange between V^{4+} (S = 1/2) moments. Below 150 K the χ(T) data deviate from the Curie-Weiss behavior but there is no signature of any long range magnetic order down to 1.8 K. There is a cusp at 2.8 K in the zero field cooled (ZFC) χ(T) data measured in a magnetic field of 100 Oe and the ZFC and field cooled (FC) data show a bifurcation below this temperature. The frequency dependence of the χ_{ac}(T) data indicate that below 3 K the system is in a spin-glass state. The difference ΔC between the heat capacity of In2VO5 and In2TiO5 shows a broad anomaly peaked at 130 K. The entropy upto 300 K is more than what is expected for S = 1/2 moments. The anomaly in ΔC and the extra entropy suggests that there may be a structural change below 130 K in In2VO5.

Singlet ground state in the spin-1/2 dimer compound Sr3Cr2O8

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat versus temperature measurements on polycrystalline samples of Sr3Cr2O8 and the isostructural, nonmagnetic compound Sr3V2O8 are reported. A Curie-Wiess fit to the high-temperature susceptibility data for Sr3Cr2O8 indicates that the Cr atoms are in the rare Cr^5+ (Spin S = 1/2) valence state as expected from the composition. The ground state was found to be a spin singlet with an excitation gap Delta/k_ B = 61.9(1) K to the magnetic triplet states, and a weak interdimer coupling of 6(2) K was inferred. The specific heat and susceptibility measurements on Sr3V2O8 reveal a phase transition at 110 K which is evidently a structural transition.

Superconducting and normal state properties of the layered boride OsB2

OsB_2 crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure (Pmmn) which contains alternate boron and osmium layers stacked along the c-axis. The boron layers consist of puckered hexagons as opposed to the flat graphite-like boron layers in MgB_2. OsB_2 is reported to become superconducting below 2.1 K. We report results of the dynamic and static magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, heat capacity and penetration depth measurements on arc-melted polycrystalline samples of OsB_2 to characterize its superconducting and normal state properties. These measurements confirmed that OsB_2 becomes a bulk superconductor below T_ c = 2.1 K. Our results indicate that OsB_2 is a moderate-coupling Type-II superconductor with an electron-phonon coupling constant λ_{ep} \approx 0.4 to 0.5, a small Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ\sim 1 to 2 and an upper critical magnetic field H_{c2}(0.5 K) \sim 420 Oe for an unannealed sample and H_{c2}(1 K) \sim 330 Oe for an annealed sample. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density n_{s}(T) for the unannealed sample is consistent with an s-wave superconductor with a slightly enhanced zero temperature gap Δ(0) = 1.9 k_{B}T_c and a zero temperature London penetration depth λ(0) = 0.38(2) μm. The n_{s}(T) data for the annealed sample shows deviations from the predictions of the single-band s-wave BCS model. The magnetic, transport and thermal properties in the normal state of isostructural and isoelectronic RuB_2, which is reported to become superconducting below 1.6 K, are also reported.

Phase Relations in the Li2O-V2O3-V2O5 System at 700 C: Correlations with Magnetic Defect Concentration in Heavy Fermion LiV2O4

The phase relations in the Li2O-V2O3-V2O5 ternary system at 700 C for compositions in equilibrium with LiV2O4 are reported. This study clarified the synthesis conditions under which low and high magnetic defect concentrations can be obtained within the spinel structure of LiV2O4. We confirmed that the LiV2O4 phase can be obtained containing low (0.006 mol%) to high (0.83 mol%) magnetic defect concentrations n{defect} and with consistently high magnetic defect spin S values between 3 and 6.5. The high n{defect} values were obtained in the LiV2O4 phase in equilibrium with V2O3, Li3VO4, or LiVO2 and the low values in the LiV2O4 phase in equilibrium with V3O5. A model is suggested to explain this correlation.

Stretched Exponential Relaxation Arising from a Continuous Sum of Exponential Decays

Stretched exponential relaxation of a quantity n versus time t according to n = n_0 exp[-(lambda* t)^beta] is ubiquitous in many research fields, where lambda* is a characteristic relaxation rate and the stretching exponent beta is in the range 0 < beta < 1. Here we consider systems in which the stretched exponential relaxation arises from the global relaxation of a system containing independently exponentially relaxing species with a probability distribution P(lambda/lambda*,beta) of relaxation rates lambda. We study the properties of P(lambda/lambda*,beta) and their dependence on beta. Physical interpretations of lambda* and beta, derived from consideration of P(lambda/lambda*,beta) and its moments, are discussed.

Synthesis, Structure, and Ferromagnetism of a New Oxygen Defect Pyrochlore System Lu2V2O_{7-x} (x = 0.40-0.65)

A new fcc oxygen defect pyrochlore structure system Lu2V2O_{7-x} with x = 0.40 to 0.65 was synthesized from the known fcc ferromagnetic semiconductor pyrochlore compound Lu2V2O7 which can be written as Lu2V2O6O' with two inequivalent oxygen sites O and O'. Rietveld x-ray diffraction refinements showed significant Lu-V antisite disorder for x >= 0.5. The lattice parameter versus x (including x = 0) shows a distinct maximum at x ~ 0.4. We propose that these observations can be explained if the oxygen defects are on the O' sublattice of the structure. The magnetic susceptibility versus temperature exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior above 150 K for all x, with a Curie constant C that increases with x as expected in an ionic model. However, the magnetization measurements also show that the (ferromagnetic) Weiss temperature theta and the ferromagnetic ordering temperature T_C both strongly decrease with increasing x instead of increasing as expected from C(x). The T_C decreases from 73 K for x = 0 to 21 K for x = 0.65. Furthermore, the saturation moment at a field of 5.5 T at 5 K is nearly independent of x, with the value expected for a fixed spin 1/2 per V. The latter three observations suggest that Lu2V2O_{7-x} may contain localized spin 1/2 vanadium moments in a metallic background that is induced by oxygen defect doping, instead of being a semiconductor as suggested by the C(x) dependence.

The role of strong electronic correlations in the metal-to-insulator transition in disordered LiAl_yTi_(2-y)O_4

The compound LiAl_yTi_(2-y)O_4 undergoes a metal-to-insulator transition for y_c ~0 .33. This system, in the absence of strong electronic correlations, is a prototypical example of quantum site percolation. However, it is known that the effects of disorder produced by such a percolating lattice are insufficient to explain this transition: a quantum site percolation model predicts y_c ~ 0.8, well above the experimental value. We have included an on-site Hubbard interaction into a model of this compound, using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, and have found that for a Hubbard energy equal to 1.5 times the non-interacting bandwidth one obtains y_c~0.35. Further, as a function of increasing Hubbard energy, we find that an Altshuler-Aronov suppression of the density of states, delta N(E) ~ sqrt(| E-E_F |), reduces the density of states at the Fermi energy to zero at the critical Hubbard interaction. Using this ratio of correlation to hopping energy one is led to a prediction for the value of near-neighbour superexchange J/t~1/3 which is similar to that for the cuprate superconductors.

Dynamics of Magnetic Defects in Heavy Fermion LiV2O4 from Stretched Exponential 7Li NMR Relaxation

7Li NMR measurements on LiV2O4 from 0.5 to 4.2 K are reported. A small concentration of magnetic defects within the structure drastically changes the 7Li nuclear magnetization relaxation versus time from a pure exponential as in pure LiV2O4 to a stretched exponential, indicating glassy behavior of the magnetic defects. The stretched exponential function is described as arising from a distribution of 7Li nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and we present a model for the distribution in terms of the dynamics of the magnetic defects. Our results explain the origin of recent puzzling 7Li NMR literature data on LiV2O4 and our model is likely applicable to other glassy systems.

Examining the metal-to-insulator transitions in Li1+xTi2-xO4 and LiAlyTi2-yO4 with a Quantum Site Percolation model

We have studied the composition-induced metal-to-insulator transitions of cation substituted Lithium Titanate, in the forms Li1+xTi2-xO4 and LiAlyTi2-yO4, utilising a quantum site percolation model, and we argue that such a model provides a very reliable representation of the noninteracting electrons in this material if strong correlations are ignored. We then determine whether or not such a model of 3d electrons moving on the Ti (corner-sharing tetrahedral) sublattice describes the observed metal-to-insulator transitions, with the critical concentration defined by the matching of the mobility edge and the chemical potential. Our analysis leads to quantitative predictions that are in disagreement with those measured experimentally. For example, experimentally for the LiAlyTi2-yO4 compound an Al concentration of y_c approximately 0.33 produces a metal-to-insulator transition, whereas our analysis of a quantum site percolation model predicts y_c approximately 0.83. One hypothesis that is consistent with these results is that since strong correlations are ignored in our quantum site percolation model, which includes the effects of configurational disorder only, such strong electronic correlations are both present and important.

Modeling of the Magnetic Susceptibilities of the Ambient- and High-Pressure Phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7}

The magnetic susceptibilities chi versus temperature T of powders and single crystals of the ambient-pressure (AP) and high-pressure (HP) phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7} are analyzed using an accurate theoretical prediction of chi(T, J1, J2) for the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1, J2) Heisenberg chain. The results are consistent with recent models with two distinct types of alternating-exchange chains in the AP phase and a single type in the HP phase. The spin gap for each type of chain is derived from the respective set of two fitted alternating exchange constants and the one-magnon dispersion relation for each of the two types of chains in the AP phase is predicted. The influences of interchain coupling on the derived intrachain exchange constants, spin gaps, and dispersion relations are estimated using a mean-field approximation for the interchain coupling. The accuracies of the spin gaps obtained using fits to the low-T chi(T) data by theoretical low-T approximations are determined. The results of these studies are compared with previously reported estimates of the exchange couplings and spin gaps in the AP and HP phases and with the magnon dispersion relations in the AP phase measured previously using inelastic neutron scattering.

Thermodynamics of Spin S = 1/2 Antiferromagnetic Uniform and Alternating-Exchange Heisenberg Chains

The magnetic susceptibility chi and specific heat C versus temperature T of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1 and J2) Heisenberg chain are studied for the entire range 0 \leq alpha \leq 1 of the alternation parameter alpha = J2/J1. For the uniform chain (alpha = 1), detailed comparisons of the high-accuracy chi(T) and C(T) Bethe ansatz data of Kluemper and Johnston are made with the asymptotically exact low-T field theory predictions of Lukyanov. QMC simulations and TMRG calculations of chi(alpha,T) are presented. From the low-T TMRG data, the spin gap Delta(alpha)/J1 is extracted for 0.8 \leq alpha \leq 0.995. High accuracy fits to all of the above numerical data are obtained. We examine in detail the theoretical predictions of Bulaevskii for chi(alpha,T) and compare them with our results. Our experimental chi(T) and C(T) data for NaV2O5 single crystals are modeled in detail. The chi(T) data above the spin dimerization temperature Tc = 34 K are not in agreement with the prediction for the uniform Heisenberg chain, but can be explained if there is a moderate ferromagnetic interchain coupling and/or if J changes with T. By fitting the chi(T) data, we obtain Delta(T = 0) = 103(2) K, alternation parameter delta(0) = (1 - alpha)/(1 + alpha) = 0.034(6) and average exchange constant J(0) = 640(80) K. The delta(T) and Delta(T) are derived from the data. A spin pseudogap with a large magnitude \approx 0.4 Delta(0) is consistently found just above Tc, which decreases with increasing T. Analysis of our C(T) data indicates that at Tc, at least 77% of the entropy change due to the transition at Tc and associated order parameter fluctuations arise from the lattice and/or charge degrees of freedom and less than 23% from the spin degrees of freedom.

Thermodynamics of the Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Uniform Heisenberg Chain

We present a new application of the traditional thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic uniform Heisenberg chain and derive exact nonlinear integral equations for just {\em two} functions describing the elementary excitations. Using this approach the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and specific heat C versus temperature T are calculated to high accuracy for $5\times10^{-25}\leq T/J\leq 5$. The $χ(T)$ data agree very well at low T with the asymptotically exact theoretical low-T prediction of S. Lukyanov, Nucl. Phys. B {\bf 522}, 533 (1998). The unknown coefficients of the second and third lowest-order logarithmic correction terms in Lukyanov's theory for C(T) are estimated from the C(T) data.

Heavy Fermion Behaviors in LiV_{2}O_{4}

Experiments of various types on the metallic transition metal oxide compound LiV_{2}O_{4} with the fcc normal-spinel structure are reviewed. The low-temperature T < 10 K data consistently indicate heavy fermion (HF) behaviors characteristic of those of the heaviest-mass f-electron HF compounds. A crossover is observed above about 50 K in the magnetic susceptibility, ^{7}Li spin-lattice relaxation rate and neutron magnetic scattering function to a magnetic state variously described as an antiferromagnetically-coupled local-moment metal or, at the opposite extreme, as an itinerant nearly-ferromagnetic metal. Recent theoretical investigations to understand these properties of LiV_{2}O_{4} are discussed.

Specific Heat (1.2-108 K) and Thermal Expansion (4.4-297 K) Measurements of the 3d Heavy Fermion Compound LiV_{2}O_{4}

Specific heat C_{p}(T) measurements of the heavy fermion normal-spinel structure compound LiV_{2}O_{4} were carried out using a heat-pulse calorimeter over the temperature T range from 1.2 to 108 K. The electronic specific heat C_{e}(T) of LiV_{2}O_{4} is extracted from the C_{p}(T) data using the lattice contribution obtained for LiTi_{2}O_{4}, a superconductor with T_{c} = 11.8 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ(T) = C_{e}(T)/T of LiV_{2}O_{4} is found to be 0.42 and 0.43 J/mol K^2 at T = 1 K for two different high magnetic purity samples, respectively. γ(T) decreases rapidly with increasing temperature from 4 to 30 K and then decreases much more slowly from 0.13 J/mol K^2 at 30 K to 0.08 J/mol K^2 at 108 K. The C_{e}(T) is compared with theoretical predictions for the spin S = 1/2 Kondo model, a generic Fermi liquid model, and an antiferromagnetically coupled quantum-disordered metal. Each of these theories can adequately describe C_{e}(T) in the Fermi liquid regime at low (~ 1 to 10 K) temperatures, consistently yielding a large extrapolated γ(0) = 428(3) mJ/mol K^2. However, none of these theories describes C_{e}(T) from ~ 10 K to 108 K. Our C_{e}(T) data are also in severe disagreement with the magnetic specific heat of the spin S = 1/2 Heisenberg model. Thermal expansion measurements of LiV_{2}O_{4} were carried out from 4.4 to 297 K using a differential capacitance dilatometer. Strong increases in the thermal expansion coefficient and Grüneisen parameter Γare found below \~ 20 K, confirming the results of Chmaissem et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4866 (1997)] obtained using neutron diffraction. We estimate that Γ(0) is about 11.4.

Synthesis, Characterization and Magnetic Susceptibility of the Heavy Fermion Transition Metal Oxide LiV_{2}O_{4}

The preparative method, characterization and magnetic susceptibility χmeasurements versus temperature T of the heavy fermion transition metal oxide LiV_{2}O_{4} are reported in detail. The intrinsic χ(T) shows a nearly T-independent behavior below ~ 30 K with a shallow broad maximum at about 16 K, whereas Curie-Weiss-like behavior is observed above 50-100 K. Field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetization M measurements in applied magnetic fields H = 10 to 100 G from 1.8 to 50 K showed no evidence for spin-glass ordering. Crystalline electric field theory for an assumed cubic V point group symmetry is found insufficient to describe the observed temperature variation of the effective magnetic moment. The Kondo and Coqblin-Schrieffer models do not describe the magnitude and T dependence of χwith realistic parameters. In the high T range, fits of χ(T) by the predictions of high temperature series expansion calculations provide estimates of the V-V antiferromagnetic exchange coupling constant J/k_{B} ~ 20 K, g-factor g ~ 2 and the T-independent susceptibility. Other possible models to describe the χ(T) are discussed. The paramagnetic impurities in the samples were characterized using isothermal M(H) measurements with 0 < H <= 5.5 Tesla at 2 to 6 K. These impurities are inferred to have spin S_{imp} ~ 3/2 to 4, g_{imp} ~ 2 and molar concentrations of 0.01 to 0.8 %, depending on the sample.

Intercalation and Staging Behavior in Super-Oxygenated $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.
