High-Fidelity Integrated Quantum Photonic Logic Via Robust Directional Couplers

Scalable quantum information processing with integrated photonics requires quantum logic operations with high fidelity and robustness. Directional couplers, the fundamental elements enabling quantum interference and logic operations, are inherently sensitive to fabrication imperfections and environmental fluctuations, leading to reduced gate fidelities. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a passive design strategy that mitigates these errors by exploiting a stationary geometrical configuration in uniform directional couplers, where first-order variations in the coupling coefficient are intrinsically suppressed. The robust geometry is implemented in a silicon-on-insulator photonic chip hosting two-photon controlled-NOT (CNOT) quantum gates and its performance is directly compared to a non-optimized design. Measurements indicate a mean gate fidelity of $93.30 \pm 0.11\%$, representing a clear improvement over the non-robust implementation mean fidelity of $91.93 \pm 0.17\%$, without any active tuning or footprint increase. This performance approaches the theoretical limit of $93.78\%$, imposed by the imperfect source. Monte Carlo simulations incorporating realistic fabrication noise confirm the observed enhancement and reveal consistent suppression of gate-level error rates. These results demonstrate a compact, fabrication-tolerant building block for scalable, fault-tolerant photonic quantum circuits and highlight the power of passive geometric error mitigation in quantum hardware design.

Weak Correlations as the Underlying Principle for Linearization of Gradient-Based Learning Systems

Deep learning models, such as wide neural networks, can be conceptualized as nonlinear dynamical physical systems characterized by a multitude of interacting degrees of freedom. Such systems in the infinite limit, tend to exhibit simplified dynamics. This paper delves into gradient descent-based learning algorithms, that display a linear structure in their parameter dynamics, reminiscent of the neural tangent kernel. We establish this apparent linearity arises due to weak correlations between the first and higher-order derivatives of the hypothesis function, concerning the parameters, taken around their initial values. This insight suggests that these weak correlations could be the underlying reason for the observed linearization in such systems. As a case in point, we showcase this weak correlations structure within neural networks in the large width limit. Exploiting the relationship between linearity and weak correlations, we derive a bound on deviations from linearity observed during the training trajectory of stochastic gradient descent. To facilitate our proof, we introduce a novel method to characterise the asymptotic behavior of random tensors.

Odd Dimensional Nonlocal Liouville Conformal Field Theories

We construct Euclidean Liouville conformal field theories in odd number of dimensions. The theories are nonlocal and non-unitary with a log-correlated Liouville field, a ${\cal Q}$-curvature background, and an exponential Liouville-type potential. We study the classical and quantum properties of these theories including the finite entanglement entropy part of the sphere partition function $F$, the boundary conformal anomaly and vertex operators' correlation functions. We derive the analogue of the even-dimensional DOZZ formula and its semi-classical approximation.

Entanglement Diagnostics for Efficient Quantum Computation

We consider information spreading measures in randomly initialized variational quantum circuits and introduce entanglement diagnostics for efficient variational quantum/classical computations. We establish a robust connection between entanglement measures and optimization accuracy by solving two eigensolver problems for Ising Hamiltonians with nearest-neighbor and long-range spin interactions. As the circuit depth affects the average entanglement of random circuit states, the entanglement diagnostics can identify a high-performing depth range for optimization tasks encoded in local Hamiltonians. We argue, based on an eigensolver problem for the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, that entanglement alone is insufficient as a diagnostic to the approximation of volume-law entangled target states and that a large number of circuit parameters is needed for such an optimization task.

Heterogeneity and Superspreading Effect on Herd Immunity

We model and calculate the fraction of infected population necessary to reach herd immunity, taking into account the heterogeneity in infectiousness and susceptibility, as well as the correlation between those two parameters. We show that these cause the effective reproduction number to decrease more rapidly, and consequently have a drastic effect on the estimate of the necessary percentage of the population that has to contract the disease for herd immunity to be reached. We quantify the difference between the size of the infected population when the effective reproduction number decreases below 1 vs. the ultimate fraction of population that had contracted the disease. This sheds light on an important distinction between herd immunity and the end of the disease and highlights the importance of limiting the spread of the disease even if we plan to naturally reach herd immunity. We analyze the effect of various lock-down scenarios on the resulting final fraction of infected population. We discuss implications to COVID-19 and other pandemics and compare our theoretical results to population-based simulations. We consider the dependence of the disease spread on the architecture of the infectiousness graph and analyze different graph architectures and the limitations of the graph models.

On the Membrane Paradigm and Spontaneous Breaking of Horizon BMS Symmetries

We consider a BMS-type symmetry action on isolated horizons in asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the viewpoint of the non-relativistic field theory on a horizon membrane, supertranslations shift the field theory spatial momentum. The latter is related by a Ward identity to the particle number symmetry current and is spontaneously broken. The corresponding Goldstone boson shifts the horizon angular momentum and can be detected quantum mechanically. Similarly, area preserving superrotations are spontaneously broken on the horizon membrane and we identify the corresponding gapless modes. In asymptotically AdS spacetimes we study the BMS-type symmetry action on the horizon in a holographic superfluid dual. We identify the horizon supertranslation Goldstone boson as the holographic superfluid Goldstone mode.

Parity Breaking Transport in Lifshitz Hydrodynamics

We derive the constitutive relations of first order charged hydrodynamics for theories with Lifshitz scaling and broken parity in $2+1$ and $3+1$ spacetime dimensions. In addition to the anomalous (in $3+1$) or Hall (in $2+1$) transport of relativistic hydrodynamics, there is an additional non-dissipative transport allowed by the absence of boost invariance. We analyze the non-relativistic limit and use a phenomenological model of a strange metal to argue that these effects can be measured in principle by using electromagnetic fields with non-zero gradients.

Scaling Relations in Two-Dimensional Relativistic Hydrodynamic Turbulence

We derive exact scaling relations for two-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic turbulence in the inertial range of scales. We consider both the energy cascade towards large scales and the enstrophy cascade towards small scales. We illustrate these relations by numerical simulations of turbulent weakly compressible flows. Intriguingly, the fluid-gravity correspondence implies that the gravitational field in spacetimes with anti-de Sitter asymptotics should exhibit similar scaling relations.

The Anomalous Scaling Exponents of Turbulence in General Dimension from Random Geometry

We propose an exact analytical formula for the anomalous scaling exponents of inertial range structure functions in incompressible fluid turbulence. The formula is a gravitational Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov (KPZ)-type relation, and is valid in any number of space dimensions. It incorporates intermittency by gravitationally dressing the Kolmogorov linear scaling via a coupling to a random geometry. The formula has one real parameter $γ$ that depends on the number of space dimensions. The scaling exponents satisfy the convexity inequality, and the supersonic bound constraint. They agree with the experimental and numerical data in two and three space dimensions, and with numerical data in four space dimensions. Intermittency increases with $γ$, and in the infinite $γ$ limit the scaling exponents approach the value one, as in Burgers turbulence. At large $n$ the $n$th order exponent scales as $\sqrt{n}$. We discuss the relation between fluid flows and black hole geometry that inspired our proposal.

Ward Identities for Transport in 2+1 Dimensions

We use the Ward identities corresponding to general linear transformations, and derive relations between transport coefficients of $(2+1)$-dimensional systems. Our analysis includes relativistic and Galilean invariant systems, as well as systems without boost invariance such as Lifshitz theories. We consider translation invariant, as well as broken translation invariant cases, and include an external magnetic field. Our results agree with effective theory relations of incompressible Hall fluid, and with holographic calculations in a magnetically charged black hole background.

Horava-Lifshitz Black Hole Hydrodynamics

We consider the holographic hydrodynamics of black holes in generally covariant gravity theories with a preferred time foliation. Gravitational perturbations in these theories have spin two and spin zero helicity modes with generically different speeds. The black hole solutions possess a spacelike causal boundary called the universal horizon. We relate the flux of the spin zero perturbation across the universal horizon to the new dissipative transport in Lifshitz field theory hydrodynamics found in arXiv:1304.7481. We construct in detail the hydrodynamics of one such black hole solution, and calculate the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density.

Lifshitz Field Theories at Non-Zero Temperature, Hydrodynamics and Gravity

We consider a covariant formulation of field theories with Lifshitz scaling, and analyze the energy-momentum tensor and the scale symmetry Ward identity. We derive the equation of state and the ideal Lifshitz hydrodynamics in agreement with arXiv:1304.7481, where they were determined by using thermodynamics and symmetry properties. We construct the charged ideal Lifshitz hydrodynamics in the generating functional framework as well as in the gravitational holographic dual description. At the first viscous order, an analysis of the entropy current reveals two additional transport coefficients (one dissipative and one dissipationless) compared to the neutral case, contributing to the charge current and to the asymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor.

Lifshitz Hydrodynamics

We construct the hydrodynamics of quantum critical points with Lifshitz scaling. There are new dissipative effects allowed by the lack of boost invariance. The formulation is applicable, in general, to any fluid with an explicit breaking of boost symmetry. We use a Drude model of a strange metal to study the physical effects of the new transport coefficient. It can be measured using electric fields with non-zero gradients, or via the heat production when an external force is turned on. Scaling arguments fix the resistivity to be linear in the temperature.

Lifshitz Scale Anomalies

We analyse scale anomalies in Lifshitz field theories, formulated as the relative cohomology of the scaling operator with respect to foliation preserving diffeomorphisms. We construct a detailed framework that enables us to calculate the anomalies for any number of spatial dimensions, and for any value of the dynamical exponent. We derive selection rules, and establish the anomaly structure in diverse universal sectors. We present the complete cohomologies for various examples in one, two and three space dimensions for several values of the dynamical exponent. Our calculations indicate that all the Lifshitz scale anomalies are trivial descents, called B-type in the terminology of conformal anomalies. However, not all the trivial descents are cohomologically non-trivial. We compare the conformal anomalies to Lifshitz scale anomalies with a dynamical exponent equal to one.

Lifshitz Superfluid Hydrodynamics

We construct the first order hydrodynamics of quantum critical points with Lifshitz scaling and a spontaneously broken symmetry. The fluid is described by a combination of two flows, a normal component that carries entropy and a super-flow which has zero viscosity and carries no entropy. We analyze the new transport effects allowed by the lack of boost invariance and constrain them by the local second law of thermodynamics. Imposing time-reversal invariance, we find eight new parity even transport coefficients. The formulation is applicable, in general, to any superfluid/superconductor with an explicit breaking of boost symmetry, in particular to high $T_c$ superconductors. We discuss possible experimental signatures.

Odd Parity Transport In Non-Abelian Superfluids From Symmetry Locking

We consider relativistic non-Abelian superfluids, where the expectation value of the global symmetry currents relate space and internal indices, thus creating a "locked" phase. Locking a superfluid with SU(2) internal symmetry in 2+1 dimensions breaks parity spontaneously, and introduces parity-odd terms in the constitutive relations. We show that there are qualitatively different extensions of the rest frame locking to non-zero velocities. We construct the resulting superfluid hydrodynamics up to the first derivative order. Using an expansion close to the critical point, we estimate the ratio of the Hall viscosity and the angular momentum density. Our general hydrodynamic results are compatible with the holographic p-wave calculations in arXiv:1311.4882.

The Slow Gravitino

When the supersymmetry breaking sector is a fluid background, Lorentz invariance is broken spontaneously. The super-Higgs mechanism leads to a gravitino Lagrangian with Lorentz symmetry violating terms. We analyse the resulting field equations and constraints. We identify the physical spin 3/2 and spin 1/2 helicity states, derive their equations of motion and construct the propagator. The violation of Lorentz symmetry implies that the longitudinal mode has a non-relativistic dispersion relation, whose speed is lower than the speed of light. We briefly comment on possible implications to gravitino cosmology and phenomenology.

Ward Identities for Hall Transport

We derive quantum field theory Ward identities based on linear area preserving and conformal transformations in 2+1 dimensions. The identities relate Hall viscosities, Hall conductivities and the angular momentum. They apply both for relativistic and non relativistic systems, at zero and at finite temperature. We consider systems with or without translation invariance, and introduce an external magnetic field and viscous drag terms. A special case of the identities yields the well known relation between the Hall conductivity and half the angular momentum density.

Anomalies in Superfluids and a Chiral Electric Effect

We analyze the chiral transport terms in relativistic superfluid hydrodynamics. In addition to the spontaneously broken symmetry current, we consider an arbitrary number of unbroken symmetries and extend the results of arXiv:1105.3733. We suggest an interpretation of some of the new transport coefficients in terms of chiral and gravitational anomalies. In particular, we show that with unbroken gauged charges in the system, one can observe a chiral electric conductivity - a current in a perpendicular direction to the applied electric field. We present a motivated proposal for the value of the associated transport coefficient, linking it to the triangle anomaly. Along the way we present new arguments regarding the interpretation of the anomalous transport coefficients in normal fluids. We propose a natural generalization of the chiral transport terms to the case of an arbitrary number of spontaneously broken symmetry currents.

Bulk Viscosity in Holographic Lifshitz Hydrodynamics

We compute the bulk viscosity in holographic models dual to theories with Lifshitz scaling and/or hyperscaling violation, using a generalization of the bulk viscosity formula derived in arXiv:1103.1657 from the null focusing equation. We find that only a class of models with massive vector fields are truly Lifshitz scale invariant, and have a vanishing bulk viscosity. For other holographic models with scalars and/or massless vector fields we find a universal formula in terms of the dynamical exponent and the hyperscaling violation exponent.

Conformal Anomalies in Hydrodynamics

We study the effect of conformal anomalies on the hydrodynamic description of conformal field theories in even spacetime dimensions. We consider equilibrium curved backgrounds characterized by a time-like Killing vector and construct a local low energy effective action that captures the conformal anomalies. Using as a special background the Rindler spacetime we derive a formula for the anomaly effect on the hydrodynamic pressure. We find that this anomalous effect is only due to the Euler central charge.

Constraints on Rindler Hydrodynamics

We study uncharged Rindler hydrodynamics at second order in the derivative expansion. The equation of state of the theory is given by a vanishing equilibrium energy density. We derive relations among the transport coefficients by employing two frameworks. First, by the requirement of having an entropy current with a non-negative divergence, second by studying the thermal partition function on stationary backgrounds. The relations derived by these two methods are equivalent. We verify the results by studying explicit examples in flat and curved space-time geometries.

Entanglement and Thermal Entropy of Gauge Fields

We consider the universal logarithmic divergent term in the entanglement entropy of gauge fields in the Minkowski vacuum with an entangling sphere. Employing the mapping in arXiv:1102.0440, we analyze the corresponding thermal entropy on open Einstein universe and on the static patch of de Sitter. Using the heat kernel of the vector Laplacian we resolve a discrepancy between the free field calculation and the expected Euler conformal anomaly. The resolution suggests a modification of the well known formulas for the vacuum expectation value of the spin-1 energy-momentum tensor on conformally flat space-times.

Holographic Vorticity in the Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

The vorticity statistics characterises both the direct and the inverse turbulent cascades of two-dimensional fluid flows. The fluid/gravity correspondence relates fluid flows to black brane dynamics. We construct the holographic vorticity for relativistic and non-relativistic fluids in terms of the gravitational black brane data, and relate it to the horizon vorticity expressed as a Weyl scalar. We discuss the statistical scaling structure of the horizon geometry.

Superfluid Kubo Formulas from Partition Function

Linear response theory relates hydrodynamic transport coefficients to equilibrium retarded correlation functions of the stress-energy tensor and global symmetry currents in terms of Kubo formulas. Some of these transport coefficients are non-dissipative and affect the fluid dynamics at equilibrium. We present an algebraic framework for deriving Kubo formulas for such thermal transport coefficients by using the equilibrium partition function. We use the framework to derive Kubo formulas for all such transport coefficients of superfluids, as well as to rederive Kubo formulas for various normal fluid systems.

The Super-Higgs Mechanism in Fluids

Supersymmetry is spontaneously broken when the field theory stress-energy tensor has a non-zero vacuum expectation value. In local supersymmetric field theories the massless gravitino and goldstino combine via the super-Higgs mechanism to a massive gravitino. We study this mechanism in four-dimensional fluids, where the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor breaks spontaneously both supersymmetry and Lorentz symmetry. We consider both constant as well as space-time dependent ideal fluids. We derive a formula for the gravitino mass in terms of the fluid velocity, energy density and pressure. We discuss some of the phenomenological implications.

Fluid/Gravity Correspondence, Local Wald Entropy Current and Gravitational Anomaly

We propose, in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence, a definition for a local horizon entropy current for higher-curvature gravitational theories. The current is well-defined to first order in fluid gradients for general gravity actions with an algebraic dependence on the Riemann tensor. As a detailed example, we consider five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term. In this theory, we construct the proposed entropy current on a charged black-brane background, and show that it has a non-negative divergence. Moreover, a complete correspondence between the charged black-brane horizon's dynamics and the hydrodynamics of an anomalous four-dimensional field theory is established. Our proposed entropy current is then found to coincide with the entropy current of the anomalous field theory fluid.

Local Entropy Current in Higher Curvature Gravity and Rindler Hydrodynamics

In the hydrodynamic regime of field theories the entropy is upgraded to a local entropy current. The entropy current is constructed phenomenologically order by order in the derivative expansion by requiring that its divergence is non-negative. In the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence, the entropy current of the fluid is mapped to a vector density associated with the event horizon of the dual geometry. In this work we consider the local horizon entropy current for higher-curvature gravitational theories proposed in arXiv:1202.2469, whose flux for stationary solutions is the Wald entropy. In non-stationary cases this definition contains ambiguities, associated with absence of a preferred timelike Killing vector. We argue that these ambiguities can be eliminated in general by choosing the vector that generates the subset of diffeomorphisms preserving a natural gauge condition on the bulk metric. We study a dynamical, perturbed Rindler horizon in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity setting and compute the bulk dual solution to second order in fluid gradients. We show that the corresponding unambiguous entropy current at second order has a manifestly non-negative divergence.

Supersymmetric sound in fluids

We consider the hydrodynamics of supersymmetric fluids. Supersymmetry is broken spontaneously and the low energy spectrum includes a fermionic massless mode, the $\mathit{phonino}$. We use two complementary approaches to describe the system: First, we construct a generating functional from which we derive the equations of motion of the fluid and of the phonino propagating through the fluid. We write the form of the leading corrections in the derivative expansion, and show that the so called diffusion terms in the supercurrent are in fact not dissipative. Second, we use an effective field theory approach which utilizes a non-linear realization of supersymmetry to analyze the interactions between phoninos and phonons, and demonstrate the conservation of entropy in ideal fluids. We comment on possible phenomenological consequences for gravitino physics in the early universe.

The Relativistic Rindler Hydrodynamics

We consider a (d+2)-dimensional class of Lorentzian geometries holographically dual to a relativistic fluid flow in (d+1) dimensions. The fluid is defined on a (d+1)-dimensional time-like surface which is embedded in the (d+2)-dimensional bulk space-time and equipped with a flat intrinsic metric. We find two types of geometries that are solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations: the Rindler metric and the Taub plane symmetric vacuum. These correspond to dual perfect fluids with vanishing and negative energy densities respectively. While the Rindler geometry is characterized by a causal horizon, the Taub geometry has a timelike naked singularity, indicating pathological behavior. We construct the Rindler hydrodynamics up to the second order in derivatives of the fluid variables and show the positivity of its entropy current divergence.

The Sound of Topology in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

Using the gauge/gravity correspondence, we study the properties of 2-point correlation functions of finite-temperature strongly coupled gauge field theories, defined on a curved space of general spatial topology with a dual black hole description. We derive approximate asymptotic expressions for the correlation functions and their poles, supported by exact numerical calculations, and study their dependence on the dimension of spacetime and the spatial topology. The asymptotic structure of the correlation functions depends on the relation between the spatial curvature and the temperature, and is noticeable when they are of the same order. In the case of a hyperbolic topology, a specific temperature is identified for which exact analytical solutions exist for all types of perturbations. The asymptotic structure of the correlation functions poles is found to behave in a non-smooth manner when approaching this temperature.

A Novel Formula for Bulk Viscosity from the Null Horizon Focusing Equation

The null horizon focusing equation is equivalent via the fluid/gravity correspondence to the entropy balance law of the fluid. Using this equation we derive a simple novel formula for the bulk viscosity of the fluid. The formula is expressed in terms of the dependence of scalar fields at the horizon on thermodynamic variables such as the entropy and charge densities. We apply the formula to three classes of gauge theory plasmas: non-conformal branes, perturbations of the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and holographic models of QCD, and discuss its range of applicability.

Chiral anomalies in superfluid hydrodynamics

This is a brief report of work performed in arXiv:1106.3576. We consider the chiral transport terms in a relativistic charged superfluid, and their relation to triangle anomalies. The terms allowed by the Second Law of thermodynamics have been worked out. A simplified form is proposed on heuristic grounds, from an analysis of the better-understood chiral effects in normal fluids. We point out the appearance of a "chiral electric conductivity", and relate it through an educated guess to the axial anomaly coefficient.

Holographic Screens and Transport Coefficients in the Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

We consider in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence the dynamics of hypersurfaces located in the holographic radial direction at r = r_0. We prove that these hypersurfaces evolve, to all orders in the derivative expansion and including all higher curvature corrections, according to the same hydrodynamics equations with identical transport coefficients. The analysis is carried out for normal fluids as well as for superfluids. Consequently, this proves the exactness of the bulk viscosity formula derived in arXiv:1103.1657 via the null horizon dynamics.

Integrability of Green-Schwarz Sigma Models with Boundaries

We construct integrability preserving boundary conditions for Green-Schwarz sigma-models on semi-symmetric spaces. The boundary conditions are expressed as gluing conditions of the flat-connection, using an involutive metric preserving automorphism. On the Entropy of Four-Dimensional Near-Extremal N=2 Black Holes with R^2-Terms

We consider the entropy of four-dimensional near-extremal N=2 black holes. Without R^2-terms, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula has the structure of the extremal black holes entropy with a shift of the charges depending on the non-extremality parameter and the moduli at infinity. We derive a generalized Wald entropy formula for non-extremal N=2 black holes with R^2-terms. We construct a class of small near-extremal horizon solutions with R^2-terms. In this case the entropy is the same as in the extremal case to order O(mu^2), and does not exhibit the charge shift behavior.

Open/Closed Topological CP1 Sigma Model Revisited

We consider the topological sigma-model on Riemann surfaces with genus g and h holes, and target space CP1. We calculate the correlation functions of bulk and boundary operators, and study the symmetries of the model and its most general deformation. We study the open/closed topological field theory (TFT) correspondence by summing up the boundaries. We argue that this summation can be understood as a renormalization of the closed TFT. We couple the model to topological gravity and derive constitutive relations between the correlation functions of bulk and boundary operators.

Self-Duality of Green-Schwarz Sigma-Models

We study fermionic T-duality symmetries of integrable Green-Schwarz sigma-models on Anti-de-Sitter backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes, constructed as Z_4 supercosets of superconformal algebras. We find three algebraic conditions that guarantee self-duality of the backgrounds under fermionic T-duality, we classify those that satisfy them and construct the map of the monodromy matrix. We introduce new T-duality directions, where some of them contain no bosonic directions, along which the backgrounds are self-dual. We find that the only self-dual backgrounds are AdS_n x S^n for n=2,3,5. In addition we find that the backgrounds AdS_n x S^1 for n=2,3,5, AdS_4 x S^2 and AdS_2 x S^4 are self-dual at the level of the classical action, but have a non-trivial transformation of the dilaton.

The Penrose Inequality and the Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

Motivated by the fluid/gravity correspondence, we consider the Penrose inequality in the framework of fluid dynamics. In general relativity, the Penrose inequality relates the mass and the entropy associated with a gravitational background. If the inequality is violated by some Cauchy data, it suggests a creation of a naked singularity, thus providing means to consider the cosmic censorship hypothesis. The analogous inequality in the context of fluid dynamics can provide a valuable tool in the study of finite-time blowups in hydrodynamics. We derive the inequality for relativistic and nonrelativistic fluid flows in general dimension. We show that the inequality is always satisfied at the ideal fluid order. At the leading viscous order, the inequality may be violated by relativistic fluid flows, while it is always satisfied by nonrelativistic incompressible flows. The inequality may be violated at the next to leading viscous order by both relativistic and nonrelativistic flows.

A search for heavy Kaluza-Klein electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC

The feasibility for the observation of a certain leptonic Kaluza-Klein (KK) hard process in {\em pp} interactions at the LHC is presented. Within the $S^1/Z_2$ TeV$^{-1}$ extra dimensional theoretical framework with the focus on the KK excitations of the Standard Model $γ$ and $Z^0$ gauge bosons, the hard-process, $f\bar f \to \sum_n\left(γ^*/Z^*\right)_n \to F \bar F$, has been used where $f$ is the initial state parton, $F$ the final state lepton and $\left(γ^*/Z^*\right)_{n}$ is the $n^{\rm th}$ KK excitation of the $γ/Z^0$ boson. For this study the analytic form for the hard process cross section has been independently calculated by the authors and has been implemented using the {\sc Moses} framework. The Moses framework itself, that has been written by the authors, was used as an external process within the {\sc Pythia} Monte Carlo generator which provides the phase space generation for the final state leptons and partons from the initial state hadrons, and the simulation of initial and final state radiation and hadronization. A brief discussion of the possibility for observing and identifying the unique signature of the KK signal given the current LHC program is also presented.

Exact Scaling Relations In Relativistic Hydrodynamic Turbulence

We consider the steady state statistics of turbulence in general classes of dissipative hydrodynamic equations, where the fluctuations are sustained by a random source concentrated at large scales. It is well known that in some particular cases, such as non-relativistic incompressible turbulence, a Kolmogorov-type exact scaling relation for a correlation function holds. We show that all such scaling relations follow from a general relation on the current-density correlation function. The derivation does not require an energy cascade picture and suggests that this traditional interpretation of the Kolmogorov relation for incompressible turbulence may be misleading. Using this we derive exact scaling results for compressible turbulence in relativistic hydrodynamics, which reduce in the slow motion limit to the Kolmogorov relation. We discuss the experimental implications of the results.

Gravity and a Geometrization of Turbulence: An Intriguing Correspondence

The dynamics of fluids is a long standing challenge that remained as an unsolved problem for centuries. Understanding its main features, chaos and turbulence, is likely to provide an understanding of the principles and non-linear dynamics of a large class of systems far from equilibrium. We consider a conceptually new viewpoint to study these features using black hole dynamics. Since the gravitational field is characterized by a curved geometry, the gravity variables provide a geometrical framework for studying the dynamics of fluids: A geometrization of turbulence.

Holographic Non-Abelian Charged Hydrodynamics from the Dynamics of Null Horizons

We analyze the dynamics of a four-dimensional null hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with Einstein-Yang-Mills fields. In an appropriate ansatz, the projection of the field equations onto the hypersurface takes the form of conservation laws for relativistic hydrodynamics with global non-abelian charges. A Chern-Simons term in the bulk action corresponds to anomalies in the global charges, with a vorticity term arising in the hydrodynamics. We derive the entropy current and obtain unique expressions for some of the leading-order transport coefficients (in the abelian case, all of them) for arbitrary equations of state. As a special case and a concrete example, we discuss the event horizon of a boosted Einstein-Yang-Mills black brane in an asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter spacetime. The evolution equations in that case describe the hydrodynamic limit of a conformal field theory with anomalous global non-abelian charges on the Anti-de-Sitter boundary.

Membrane Paradigm and Holographic Hydrodynamics

We discuss recent work showing that in certain cases the membrane paradigm equations governing the dynamics of black hole horizons can be recast as relativistic conservation law equations. In the context of gauge/gravity dualities, these equations are interpreted as defining the viscous hydrodynamics of a holographically dual relativistic field theory. Using this approach, one can derive the viscous transport coefficients and the form of the entropy current for field theories dual to gravity plus matter fields.

We study shock scattering, demonstrate the stability of the shock waves, and calculate the anomalous exponents. We comment on the possibility of finite time blowup singularities.

Relativistic CFT Hydrodynamics from the Membrane Paradigm

We use the membrane paradigm to analyze the horizon dynamics of a uniformly boosted black brane in a (d+2)-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter space-time and a Rindler acceleration horizon in (d+2)-dimensional Minkowski space-time. We show that in these cases the horizon dynamics is governed by the relativistic CFT hydrodynamics equations. The fluid velocity and temperature correspond to the normal to the horizon and to the surface gravity, respectively. The second law of thermodynamics for the fluid is mapped into the area increase theorem of General Relativity. The analysis is applicable, in general, to perturbations around a stationary horizon, when the scale of variations of the macroscopic fields is much larger than the inverse of the temperature. We show that the non-relativistic limit of our analysis yields the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.

Stability of Asymptotically Schroedinger RN Black Hole and Superconductivity

We perform a perturbative (near-critical) analysis of the stability of an asymptotically Schroedinger Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with respect to generation of charged scalar hair. We find that apart from the expected instability at low temperatures typical of holographic models of superconductivity, in the presence of certain operators a similar instability appears as well at high temperatures. We propose that the reason for such a phase diagram could be due to peculiar features of the dual gauge theory or the failure of the model to provide a consistent holographic dual of a non-relativistic superconductor.

The topological description of $2D$ string theory at the self-dual radius is studied in the algebro-geometrical formulation of the $A_{k+1}$ topological models at $k=-3$. Genus zero correlators of tachyons and their gravitational descendants are computed as intersection numbers on moduli space and compared to $2D$ string results. The interpretation of negative momentum tachyons as gravitational descendants of the cosmological constant, as well as modifications of this, is shown to imply a disagreement between $2D$ string correlators and the associated intersection numbers.
