ICWLM: A Multi-Task Wireless Large Model via In-Context Learning

The rapid evolution of wireless communication technologies, particularly massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and millimeter-wave (mmWave), introduces significant network complexity and computational demands. Significant research efforts have been made to improve physical layer performance by resorting to deep learning (DL) methods, which, however, are usually task-specific and struggle with data scarcity and generalization. To address these challenges, we propose a novel In-Context Wireless Large Model (ICWLM), a wireless-native foundation model designed for simultaneous multi-task learning at the physical layer. Unlike conventional methods that adapt wireless data to pre-trained large language models (LLMs), ICWLM is trained directly on large-scale, mixed wireless datasets from scratch. It jointly solves multiple classical physical layer problems, including multi-user precoding (sum-rate maximization and max-min SINR) and channel prediction. A key innovation of ICWLM is its utilization of in-context learning (ICL), enabling the model to adapt to varying system configurations and channel conditions with minimal demonstration pairs, eliminating the need for extensive retraining. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that ICWLM achieves competitive performance compared to task-specific methods while exhibiting remarkable generalization capabilities to unseen system configurations. This work offers a promising paradigm for developing unified and adaptive AI models for future wireless networks, potentially reducing deployment complexity and enhancing intelligent resource management.

Approaching the Fundamental Limit of Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexing Through a Hologram Metasurface

Establishing and approaching the fundamental limit of orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing are necessary and increasingly urgent for current multiple-input multiple-output research. In this work, we elaborate the fundamental limit in terms of independent scattering channels (or degrees of freedom of scattered fields) through angular-spectral analysis, in conjunction with a rigorous Green function method. The scattering channel limit is universal for arbitrary spatial mode multiplexing, which is launched by a planar electromagnetic device, such as antenna, metasurface, etc, with a predefined physical size. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the limit by a metasurface hologram that transforms orthogonal OAM modes to plane-wave modes scattered at critically separated angular-spectral regions. Particularly, a minimax optimization algorithm is applied to suppress angular spectrum aliasing, achieving good performances in both full-wave simulation and experimental measurement at microwave frequencies. This work offers a theoretical upper bound and corresponding approach route for engineering designs of OAM multiplexing.

Electromagnetic Effective Degree of Freedom of a MIMO System in Free Space

Effective degree of freedom (EDOF) of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system represents its equivalent number of independent single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, which directly characterizes the communication performance. Traditional EDOF only considers single polarization, where the full polarized components degrade into two independent transverse components under the far-field approximation. However, the traditional model is not applicable to complex scenarios especially for the near-field region. Based on an electromagnetic (EM) channel model built from the dyadic Green's function, we first calculate the EM EDOF to estimate the performance of an arbitrary MIMO system with full polarizations in free space. Then, we clarify the relations between the limit of EDOF and the optimal number of sources/receivers. Finally, potential benefits of near-field MIMO communications are demonstrated with the EM EDOF, in which the contribution of the longitudinally polarized source is taken into account. This work establishes a fundamental EM framework for MIMO wireless communications.

Integrating Sensing, Computing, and Communication in 6G Wireless Networks: Design and Optimization

The roll-out of various emerging wireless services has triggered the need for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks to provide functions of target sensing, intelligent computing and information communication over the same radio spectrum. In this paper, we provide a unified framework integrating sensing, computing, and communication to optimize limited system resource for 6G wireless networks. In particular, two typical joint beamforming design algorithms are derived based on multi-objective optimization problems (MOOP) with the goals of the weighted overall performance maximization and the total transmit power minimization, respectively. Extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Moreover, the impacts of key system parameters are revealed to provide useful insights for the design of integrated sensing, computing, and communication (ISCC).

Massive Unsourced Random Access over Rician Fading Channels: Design, Analysis, and Optimization

In this paper, we investigate an unsourced random access scheme for massive machine-type communications (mMTC) in the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks with sporadic data traffic. Firstly, we establish a general framework for massive unsourced random access based on a two-layer signal coding, i.e., an outer code and an inner code. In particular, considering Rician fading in the scenario of mMTC, we design a novel codeword activity detection algorithm for the inner code of unsourced random access based on the distribution of received signals by exploiting the maximum likelihood (ML) method. Then, we analyze the performance of the proposed codeword activity detection algorithm exploiting Fisher Information Matrix, which facilitates the derivative of the approximated distribution of the estimation error of the codeword activity vector when the number of base station (BS) antennas is sufficiently large. Furthermore, for the outer code, we propose an optimization algorithm to allocate the lengths of message bits and parity check bits, so as to strike a balance between the error probability and the complexity required for outer decoding. Finally, extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed detection algorithm and the optimized length allocation scheme compared with an existing detection algorithm and a fixed length allocation scheme.

Robust Design of Federated Learning for Edge-Intelligent Networks

Mass data traffics, low-latency wireless services and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have driven the emergence of a new paradigm for wireless networks, namely edge-intelligent networks, which are more efficient and flexible than traditional cloud-intelligent networks. Considering users' privacy, model sharing-based federated learning (FL) that migrates model parameters but not private data from edge devices to a central cloud is particularly attractive for edge-intelligent networks. Due to multiple rounds of iterative updating of high-dimensional model parameters between base station (BS) and edge devices, the communication reliability is a critical issue of FL for edge-intelligent networks. We reveal the impacts of the errors generated during model broadcast and model aggregation via wireless channels caused by channel fading, interference and noise on the accuracy of FL, especially when there exists channel uncertainty. To alleviate the impacts, we propose a robust FL algorithm for edge-intelligent networks with channel uncertainty, which is formulated as a worst-case optimization problem with joint device selection and transceiver design. Finally, simulation results validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Target Sensing with Intelligent Reflecting Surface: Architecture and Performance

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technology to reconfigure the radio propagation environment by dynamically controlling wireless signal's amplitude and/or phase via a large number of reflecting elements. In contrast to the vast literature on studying IRS's performance gains in wireless communications, we study in this paper a new application of IRS for sensing/localizing targets in wireless networks. Specifically, we propose a new self-sensing IRS architecture where the IRS controller is capable of transmitting probing signals that are not only directly reflected by the target (referred to as the direct echo link), but also consecutively reflected by the IRS and then the target (referred to as the IRS-reflected echo link). Moreover, dedicated sensors are installed at the IRS for receiving both the direct and IRS-reflected echo signals from the target, such that the IRS can sense the direction of its nearby target by applying a customized multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. However, since the angle estimation mean square error (MSE) by the MUSIC algorithm is intractable, we propose to optimize the IRS passive reflection for maximizing the average echo signals' total power at the IRS sensors and derive the resultant Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the angle estimation MSE. Last, numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed new IRS sensing architecture and algorithm, as compared to other benchmark sensing systems/algorithms.

Texture-enhanced Light Field Super-resolution with Spatio-Angular Decomposition Kernels

Despite the recent progress in light field super-resolution (LFSR) achieved by convolutional neural networks, the correlation information of light field (LF) images has not been sufficiently studied and exploited due to the complexity of 4D LF data. To cope with such high-dimensional LF data, most of the existing LFSR methods resorted to decomposing it into lower dimensions and subsequently performing optimization on the decomposed sub-spaces. However, these methods are inherently limited as they neglected the characteristics of the decomposition operations and only utilized a limited set of LF sub-spaces ending up failing to sufficiently extract spatio-angular features and leading to a performance bottleneck. To overcome these limitations, in this paper, we comprehensively discover the potentials of LF decomposition and propose a novel concept of decomposition kernels. In particular, we systematically unify the decomposition operations of various sub-spaces into a series of such decomposition kernels, which are incorporated into our proposed Decomposition Kernel Network (DKNet) for comprehensive spatio-angular feature extraction. The proposed DKNet is experimentally verified to achieve considerable improvements compared with the state-of-the-art methods. To further improve DKNet in producing more visually pleasing LFSR results, based on the VGG network, we propose a LFVGG loss to guide the Texture-Enhanced DKNet (TE-DKNet) to generate rich authentic textures and enhance LF images' visual quality significantly. We also propose an indirect evaluation metric by taking advantage of LF material recognition to objectively assess the perceptual enhancement brought by the LFVGG loss.

Performance Analysis of Millimeter Wave Wireless Power Transfer With Imperfect Beam Alignment

In this paper, the impact of imperfect beam alignment (IBA) on millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless power transfer (WPT) is investigated. We consider a mmWave WPT network, where the location of the energy transmitters follows a Poisson point process. Instead of the mostly used flat-top antenna model, we adopt the Gaussian antenna model suggested by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for better accuracy. Two beam alignment error (BAE) models, i.e., truncated Gaussian and uniform models, are introduced to represent different BAE sources. We derive the probability density functions (PDFs) of the cascaded antenna gain with both BAE models and then provide the approximated PDFs for tractability. With the help of Fox's H function, the analytic expression for the energy coverage probability with nonlinear energy harvesting model is derived. Besides, we deduce a closed-form expression of the average harvested radio frequency (RF) energy. The simulation results verify our theoretical results and demonstrate the performance degradation incurred by BAE. It also shows that the flat-top antenna model cannot always provide accurate performance evaluation in the presence of BAE.

Unsourced Random Massive Access with Beam-Space Tree Decoding

The core requirement of massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC) is to support reliable and fast access for an enormous number of machine-type devices (MTDs). In many practical applications, the base station (BS) only concerns the list of received messages instead of the source information, introducing the emerging concept of unsourced random access (URA). Although some massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) URA schemes have been proposed recently, the unique propagation properties of millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems are not fully exploited in conventional URA schemes. In grant-free random access, the BS cannot perform receive beamforming independently as the identities of active users are unknown to the BS. Therefore, only the intrinsic beam division property can be exploited to improve the decoding performance. In this paper, a URA scheme based on beam-space tree decoding is proposed for mmWave massive MIMO system. Specifically, two beam-space tree decoders are designed based on hard decision and soft decision, respectively, to utilize the beam division property. They both leverage the beam division property to assist in discriminating the sub-blocks transmitted from different users. Besides, the first decoder can reduce the searching space, enjoying a low complexity. The second decoder exploits the advantage of list decoding to recover the miss-detected packets. Simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed URA schemes compared to the conventional URA schemes in terms of error probability.

Communication Lower Bound in Convolution Accelerators

In current convolutional neural network (CNN) accelerators, communication (i.e., memory access) dominates the energy consumption. This work provides comprehensive analysis and methodologies to minimize the communication for CNN accelerators. For the off-chip communication, we derive the theoretical lower bound for any convolutional layer and propose a dataflow to reach the lower bound. This fundamental problem has never been solved by prior studies. The on-chip communication is minimized based on an elaborate workload and storage mapping scheme. We in addition design a communication-optimal CNN accelerator architecture. Evaluations based on the 65nm technology demonstrate that the proposed architecture nearly reaches the theoretical minimum communication in a three-level memory hierarchy and it is computation dominant. The gap between the energy efficiency of our accelerator and the theoretical best value is only 37-87%.

Covariance-Based Cooperative Activity Detection for Massive Grant-Free Random Access

This paper designs a cooperative activity detection framework for massive grant-free random access in the sixth-generation (6G) cell-free wireless networks based on the covariance of the received signals at the access points (APs). In particular, multiple APs cooperatively detect the device activity by only exchanging the low-dimensional intermediate local information with their neighbors. The cooperative activity detection problem is non-smooth and the unknown variables are coupled with each other for which conventional approaches are inapplicable. Therefore, this paper proposes a covariance-based algorithm by exploiting the sparsity-promoting and similarity-promoting terms of the device state vectors among neighboring APs. An approximate splitting approach is proposed based on the proximal gradient method for solving the formulated problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for large-scale activity detection problems while requires shorter pilot sequences compared with the state-of-art algorithms in achieving the same system performance.

Besides, strong generalization ability to different system parameters is also demonstrated, which further enhances the practicality of the proposed approach.

Integrated Sensing, Computation and Communication in B5G Cellular Internet of Things

In this paper, we investigate the issue of integrated sensing, computation and communication (SCC) in beyond fifth-generation (B5G) cellular internet of things (IoT) networks. According to the characteristics of B5G cellular IoT, a comprehensive design framework integrating SCC is put forward for massive IoT. For sensing, highly accurate sensed information at IoT devices are sent to the base station (BS) by using non-orthogonal communication over wireless multiple access channels. Meanwhile, for computation, a novel technique, namely over-the-air computation (AirComp), is adopted to substantially reduce the latency of massive data aggregation via exploiting the superposition property of wireless multiple access channels. To coordinate the co-channel interference for enhancing the overall performance of B5G cellular IoT integrating SCC, two joint beamforming design algorithms are proposed from the perspectives of the computation error minimization and the weighted sum-rate maximization, respectively. Finally, extensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for B5G cellular IoT over the baseline ones.

Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation for mmW/THz Wideband Massive Access

Millimeter-wave/Terahertz (mmW/THz) communications have shown great potential for wideband massive access in next-generation cellular internet of things (IoT) networks. To decrease the length of pilot sequences and the computational complexity in wideband massive access, this paper proposes a novel joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) algorithm. Specifically, after formulating JADCE as a problem of recovering a simultaneously sparse-group and low rank matrix according to the characteristics of mmW/THz channel, we prove that jointly imposing $l_1$ norm and low rank on such a matrix can achieve a robust recovery under sufficient conditions, and verify that the number of measurements derived for the mmW/THz wideband massive access system is significantly smaller than currently known measurements bound derived for the conventional simultaneously sparse and low-rank recovery. Furthermore, we propose a multi-rank aware method by exploiting the quotient geometry of product of complex rank-$L$ matrices with the number of scattering clusters $L$. Theoretical analysis and simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of computational complexity, detection error rate, and channel estimation accuracy.

Location Information Aided Multiple Intelligent Reflecting Surface Systems

This paper proposes a novel location information aided multiple intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) systems. Assuming imperfect user location information, the effective angles from the IRS to the users are estimated, which is then used to design the transmit beam and IRS beam. Furthermore, closed-form expressions for the achievable rate are derived. The analytical findings indicate that the achievable rate can be improved by increasing the number of base station (BS) antennas or reflecting elements. Specifically, a power gain of order $N M^2$ is achieved, where $N$ is the antenna number and $M$ is the number of reflecting elements. Moreover, with a large number of reflecting elements, the individual signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) is proportional to $M$, while becomes proportional to $M^2$ as non-line-of-sight (NLOS) paths vanish. Also, it has been shown that high location uncertainty would significantly degrade the achievable rate. Besides, IRSs should be deployed at distinct directions (relative to the BS) and be far away from each other to reduce the interference from multiple IRSs. Finally, an optimal power allocation scheme has been proposed to improve the system performance.

Massive Access for 5G and Beyond

Massive access, also known as massive connectivity or massive machine-type communication (mMTC), is one of the main use cases of the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless networks. A typical application of massive access is the cellular Internet of Things (IoT). Different from conventional human-type communication, massive access aims at realizing efficient and reliable communications for a massive number of IoT devices. Hence, the main characteristics of massive access include low power, massive connectivity, and broad coverage, which require new concepts, theories, and paradigms for the design of next-generation cellular networks. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of aspects of massive access design for B5G wireless networks. Specifically, we provide a detailed review of massive access from the perspectives of theory, protocols, techniques, coverage, energy, and security. Furthermore, several future research directions and challenges are identified.

Programmable Metasurface Based Multicast Systems: Design and Analysis

This paper considers a multi-antenna multicast system with programmable metasurface (PMS) based transmitter. Taking into account of the finite-resolution phase shifts of PMSs, a novel beam training approach is proposed, which achieves comparable performance as the exhaustive beam searching method but with much lower time overhead. Then, a closed-form expression for the achievable multicast rate is presented, which is valid for arbitrary system configurations. In addition, for certain asymptotic scenario, simple approximated expressions for the multicase rate are derived. Closed-form solutions are obtained for the optimal power allocation scheme, and it is shown that equal power allocation is optimal when the pilot power or the number of reflecting elements is sufficiently large. However, it is desirable to allocate more power to weaker users when there are a large number of RF chains. The analytical findings indicate that, with large pilot power, the multicast rate is determined by the weakest user. Also, increasing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains or reflecting elements can significantly improve the multicast rate, and as the phase shift number becomes larger, the multicast rate improves first and gradually converges to a limit. Moreover, increasing the number of users would significantly degrade the multicast rate, but this rate loss can be compensated by implementing a large number of reflecting elements.

Robust Design for NOMA-based Multi-Beam LEO Satellite Internet of Things

In this paper, we investigate the issue of massive access in a beyond fifth-generation (B5G) multi-beam low earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet of things (IoT) network in the presence of channel phase uncertainty due to channel state information (CSI) conveyance from the devices to the satellite via the gateway. Rather than time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA) with multi-color pattern, a new non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme is adopted to support massive IoT distributed over a very wide range. Considering the limited energy on the LEO satellite, two robust beamforming algorithms against channel phase uncertainty are proposed for minimizing the total power consumption in the scenarios of noncritical IoT applications and critical IoT applications, respectively. Both thoeretical analysis and simulation results validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithms for supporting massive access in satellite IoT.

TCIM: Triangle Counting Acceleration With Processing-In-MRAM Architecture

Triangle counting (TC) is a fundamental problem in graph analysis and has found numerous applications, which motivates many TC acceleration solutions in the traditional computing platforms like GPU and FPGA. However, these approaches suffer from the bandwidth bottleneck because TC calculation involves a large amount of data transfers. In this paper, we propose to overcome this challenge by designing a TC accelerator utilizing the emerging processing-in-MRAM (PIM) architecture. The true innovation behind our approach is a novel method to perform TC with bitwise logic operations (such as \texttt{AND}), instead of the traditional approaches such as matrix computations. This enables the efficient in-memory implementations of TC computation, which we demonstrate in this paper with computational Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic RAM (STT-MRAM) arrays. Furthermore, we develop customized graph slicing and mapping techniques to speed up the computation and reduce the energy consumption. We use a device-to-architecture co-simulation framework to validate our proposed TC accelerator. The results show that our data mapping strategy could reduce $99.99\%$ of the computation and $72\%$ of the memory \texttt{WRITE} operations. Compared with the existing GPU or FPGA accelerators, our in-memory accelerator achieves speedups of $9\times$ and $23.4\times$, respectively, and a $20.6\times$ energy efficiency improvement over the FPGA accelerator.

Unsupervised Learning for Passive Beamforming

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently emerged as a promising candidate to improve the energy and spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. However, the unit modulus constraint on the phase shift of reflecting elements makes the design of optimal passive beamforming solution a challenging issue. The conventional approach is to find a suboptimal solution using the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique, yet the resultant suboptimal iterative algorithm usually incurs high complexity, hence is not amenable for real-time implementation. Motivated by this, we propose a deep learning approach for passive beamforming design in RIS-assisted systems. In particular, a customized deep neural network is trained offline using the unsupervised learning mechanism, which is able to make real-time prediction when deployed online. Simulation results show that the proposed approach maintains most of the performance while significantly reduces computation complexity when compared with SDR-based approach.

A Dimension Reduction-Based Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation Algorithm for Massive Access

Grant-free random access is a promising protocol to support massive access in beyond fifth-generation (B5G) cellular Internet-of-Things (IoT) with sporadic traffic. Specifically, in each coherence interval, the base station (BS) performs joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) before data transmission. Due to the deployment of a large-scale antennas array and the existence of a huge number of IoT devices, JADCE usually has high computational complexity and needs long pilot sequences. To solve these challenges, this paper proposes a dimension reduction method, which projects the original device state matrix to a low-dimensional space by exploiting its sparse and low-rank structure. Then, we develop an optimized design framework with a coupled full column rank constraint for JADCE to reduce the size of the search space. However, the resulting problem is non-convex and highly intractable, for which the conventional convex relaxation approaches are inapplicable. To this end, we propose a logarithmic smoothing method for the non-smoothed objective function and transform the interested matrix to a positive semidefinite matrix, followed by giving a Riemannian trust-region algorithm to solve the problem in complex field. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient to a large-scale JADCE problem and requires shorter pilot sequences than the state-of-art algorithms which only exploit the sparsity of device state matrix.

Enhancing Wireless Information and Power Transfer by Exploiting Multi-Antenna Techniques

This paper reviews emerging wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) technique with an emphasis on its performance enhancement employing multi-antenna techniques. Compared to traditional wireless information transmission, WIPT faces numerous challenges. First, it is more susceptible to channel fading and path loss, resulting in a much shorter power transfer distance. Second, it gives rise to the issue on how to balance spectral efficiency for information transmission and energy efficiency for power transfer in order to obtain an optimal tradeoff. Third, there exists a security issue for information transmission in order to improve power transfer efficiency. In this context, multi-antenna techniques, e.g., energy beamforming, are introduced to solve these problems by exploiting spatial degree of freedom. This article provides a tutorial on various aspects of multi-antenna based WIPT techniques, with a focus on tackling the challenges by parameter optimization and protocol design. In particular, we investigate the WIPT tradeoffs based on two typical multi-antenna techniques, namely limited feedback multi-antenna technique for short-distance transfer and large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO, also known as massive MIMO) technique for long-distance transfer. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Techniques for Physical Layer Security: AF or DF?

In this paper, we consider a large scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) relaying system, where an information source sends the message to its intended destination aided by an LS-MIMO relay, while a passive eavesdropper tries to intercept the information forwarded by the relay. The advantage of a large scale antenna array is exploited to improve spectral efficiency and enhance wireless security. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short-distance interception is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate CSI at the relay, this paper gives a thorough secrecy performance analysis and comparison of two classic relaying techniques, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF). Furthermore, asymptotical analysis is carried out to provide clear insights on the secrecy performance for such an LS-MIMO relaying system. We show that under large transmit powers, AF is a better choice than DF from the perspectives of both secrecy performance and implementation complexity, and prove that there exits an optimal transmit power at medium regime that maximizes the secrecy outage capacity.

Mode Selection in MU-MIMO Downlink Networks: A Physical Layer Security Perspective

In this paper, we consider a homogenous multi-antenna downlink network where a passive eavesdropper intends to intercept the communication between a base station (BS) and multiple secure users (SU) over Rayleigh fading channels. In order to guarantee the security of information transfer, physical layer security is employed accordingly. For such a multiple user (MU) secure network, the number of accessing SUs, namely transmission mode, has a great impact on the secrecy performance. Specifically, on the one hand, a large number of accessing SUs will arise high inter-user interference at SUs, resulting in a reduction of the capacity of the legitimate channel. On the other hand, high inter-user interference will interfere with the eavesdropper and thus degrades the performance of the eavesdropper channel. Generally speaking, the harmful inter-user interference may be transformed as a useful tool of anti-eavesdropping. The focus of this paper is on selecting the optimal transmission mode according to channel conditions and system parameters, so as to maximize the sum secrecy outage capacity. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, we present several simple mode selection schemes in some extreme cases. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed mode selection schemes in MU secure communications.

With growing popularity of mobile Internet, providing secure wireless services has become a critical issue. Physical layer security (PHY-security) has been recognized as an effective means to enhance wireless security by exploiting wireless medium characteristics, e.g., fading, noise, and interference. A particularly interesting PHY-security technology is cooperative relay due to the fact that it helps to provide distributed diversity and shorten access distance. This article offers a tutorial on various multi-antenna relaying technologies to improve security at physical layer. The state of the art research results on multi-antenna relay aided PHY-security as well as some secrecy performance optimization schemes are presented. In particular, we focus on large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying technology, which is effective to tackle various challenging issues for implementing wireless PHY-security, such as short-distance interception without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) and with imperfect legitimate CSI. Moreover, the future directions are identified for further enhancement of secrecy performance.

On Interference Alignment with Imperfect CSI: Characterizations of Outage Probability, Ergodic Rate and SER

In this paper, we give a unified performance analysis of interference alignment (IA) over MIMO interference channels. Rather than the asymptotic characterization, i.e. degree of freedom (DOF) at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we focus on the other practical performance metrics, namely outage probability, ergodic rate and symbol error rate (SER). In particular, we consider imperfect IA due to the fact that the transmitters usually have only imperfect channel state information (CSI) in practical scenario. By characterizing the impact of imperfect CSI, we derive the exact closed-form expressions of outage probability, ergodic rate and SER in terms of CSI accuracy, transmit SNR, channel condition, number of antennas, and the number of data streams of each communication pair. Furthermore, we obtain some important guidelines for performance optimization of IA under imperfect CSI by minimizing the performance loss over IA with perfect CSI. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by simulation results.

The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power assignment for a decode-and-forward (DF) M-MIMO relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity and minimize the interception probability, respectively. Our study reveals the condition for a nonnegative the secrecy outage capacity, obtains closed-form expressions for optimal power, and presents the asymptotic characteristics of secrecy performance. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Optimal Power Allocation for Secure Communications in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems

In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications. In order to solve the challenging issue of short-distance interception in secure communications, the benefit of large-scale MIMO (LS-MIMO) relaying techniques is exploited to improve the secrecy performance significantly, even in the case without eavesdropper channel state information (CSI). The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power allocation for the relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. We reveal the condition that the secrecy outage capacity is positive, prove that there is one and only one optimal power, and present an optimal power allocation scheme. Moreover, the asymptotic characteristics of the secrecy outage capacity is carried out to provide some clear insights for secrecy performance optimization. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Secrecy Wireless Information and Power Transfer: Challenges and Opportunities

Wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) enables more sustainable and resilient communications owing to the fact that it avoids frequent battery charging and replacement. However, it also suffers from possible information interception due to the open nature of wireless channels. Compared to traditional secure communications, secrecy wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) carries several distinct characteristics. On one hand, wireless power transfer may increase the vulnerability of eavesdropping, since a power receiver, as a potential eavesdropper, usually has a shorter access distance than an information receiver. On the other hand, wireless power transfer can be exploited to enhance wireless security. This article reviews the security issues in various SWIPT scenarios, with an emphasis on revealing the corresponding challenges and opportunities for implementing SWIPT. Furthermore, we provide a survey on a variety of physical layer security techniques to improve secrecy performance. In particular, we propose to use massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to enhance power transfer efficiency and secure information transmission simultaneously. Finally, we discuss several potential research directions to further enhance the security in SWIPT systems.

Wireless Powered Communications: Performance Analysis and Optimization

This paper investigates the average throughput of a wireless powered communications system, where an energy constrained source, powered by a dedicated power beacon (PB), communicates with a destination. It is assumed that the PB is capable of performing channel estimation, digital beamforming, and spectrum sensing as a communication device. Considering a time splitting approach, the source first harvests energy from the PB equipped with multiple antennas, and then transmits information to the destination. Assuming Nakagami-m fading channels, analytical expressions for the average throughput are derived for two different transmission modes, namely, delay tolerant and delay intolerant. In addition, closed-form solutions for the optimal time split, which maximize the average throughput are obtained in some special cases, i.e., high transmit power regime and large number of antennas. Finally, the impact of co-channel interference is studied. Numerical and simulation results have shown that increasing the number of transmit antennas at the PB is an effective tool to improve the average throughput and the interference can be potentially exploited to enhance the average throughput, since it can be utilized as an extra source of energy. Also, the impact of fading severity level of the energy transfer link on the average throughput is not significant, especially if the number of PB antennas is large. Finally, it is observed that the source position has a great impact on the average throughput.

Distributed Spectrum-Aware Clustering in Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks

A novel Distributed Spectrum-Aware Clustering (DSAC) scheme is proposed in the context of Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSN). DSAC aims at forming energy efficient clusters in a self-organized fashion while restricting interference to Primary User (PU) systems. The spectrum-aware clustered structure is presented where the communications consist of intra-cluster aggregation and inter-cluster relaying. In order to save communication power, the optimal number of clusters is derived and the idea of groupwise constrained clustering is introduced to minimize intra-cluster distance under spectrum-aware constraint. In terms of practical implementation, DSAC demonstrates preferable scalability and stability because of its low complexity and quick convergence under dynamic PU activity. Finally, simulation results are given to validate the proposed scheme.

Energy Efficient Joint Source and Channel Sensing in Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks

A novel concept of Joint Source and Channel Sensing (JSCS) is introduced in the context of Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSN). Every sensor node has two basic tasks: application-oriented source sensing and ambient-oriented channel sensing. The former is to collect the application-specific source information and deliver it to the access point within some limit of distortion, while the latter is to find the vacant channels and provide spectrum access opportunities for the sensed source information. With in-depth exploration, we find that these two tasks are actually interrelated when taking into account the energy constraints. The main focus of this paper is to minimize the total power consumed by these two tasks while bounding the distortion of the application-specific source information. Firstly, we present a specific slotted sensing and transmission scheme, and establish the multi-task power consumption model. Secondly, we jointly analyze the interplay between these two sensing tasks, and then propose a proper sensing and power allocation scheme to minimize the total power consumption. Finally, Simulation results are given to validate the proposed scheme.

Exploiting Large-Scale MIMO Techniques for Physical Layer Security with Imperfect Channel State Information

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in large-scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) systems. The large number of antenna elements in LS-MIMO system is exploited to enhance transmission security and improve system performance, especially when the eavesdropper is closer to the information source and has more antennas than the legitimate user. However, in practical systems, the problem becomes challenging because the eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable without cooperation and the legitimate CSI may be imperfect due to channel estimation error. In this paper, we first analyze the performance of physical layer security without eavesdropper CSI and with imperfect legitimate CSI, and then propose an energy-efficient power allocation scheme to meet the demand for wireless security and quality of service (QoS) simultaneously. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Joint Optimization of Spectrum Sensing and Accessing in Multiuser MISO Cognitive Networks

In this paper, a joint spectrum sensing and accessing optimization framework for a multiuser cognitive network is proposed to significantly improve spectrum efficiency. For such a cognitive network, there are two important and limited resources that should be distributed in a comprehensive manner, namely feedback bits and time duration. First, regarding the feedback bits, there are two components: sensing component (used to convey various users' sensing results) and accessing component (used to feedback channel state information). A large sensing component can support more users to perform cooperative sensing, which results in high sensing precision. However, a large accessing component is preferred as well, as it has a direct impact on the performance in the multiuser cognitive network when multi-antenna technique, such as zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF), is utilized. Second, the tradeoff of sensing and accessing duration in a transmission interval needs to be determined, so that the sum transmission rate is optimized while satisfying the interference constraint. In addition, the above two resources are interrelated and inversive under some conditions. Specifically, sensing time can be saved by utilizing more sensing feedback bits for a given performance objective. Hence, the resources should be allocation in a jointly manner. Based on the joint optimization framework and the intrinsic relationship between the two resources, we propose two joint resource allocation schemes by maximizing the average sum transmission rate in a multiuser multi-antenna cognitive network. Simulation results show that, by adopting the joint resource allocation schemes, obvious performance gain can be obtained over the traditional fixed strategies.

On the Secrecy Outage Capacity of Physical Layer Security in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system. The advantage of LS-MIMO relaying systems is exploited to enhance both wireless security and spectral efficiency. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short interception distance is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, this paper gives a thorough investigation of the impact of imperfect CSI in two classic relaying systems, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) systems, and obtain explicit expressions of secrecy outage capacities for both cases. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by the numerical results.

Performance Analysis and Optimization for Interference Alignment over MIMO Interference Channels with Limited Feedback

In this paper, we address the problem of interference alignment (IA) over MIMO interference channels with limited channel state information (CSI) feedback based on quantization codebooks. Due to limited feedback and hence imperfect IA, there are residual interferences across different links and different data streams. As a result, the performance of IA is greatly related to the CSI accuracy (namely number of feedback bits) and the number of data streams (namely transmission mode). In order to improve the performance of IA, it makes sense to optimize the system parameters according to the channel conditions. Motivated by this, we first give a quantitative performance analysis for IA under limited feedback, and derive a closed-form expression for the average transmission rate in terms of feedback bits and transmission mode. By maximizing the average transmission rate, we obtain an adaptive feedback allocation scheme, as well as a dynamic mode selection scheme. Furthermore, through asymptotic analysis, we obtain several clear insights on the system performance, and provide some guidelines on the system design. Finally, simulation results validate our theoretical claims, and show that obvious performance gain can be obtained by adjusting feedback bits dynamically or selecting transmission mode adaptively.

Secure Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Large-Scale MIMO Relaying Systems with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we address the problem of secure wireless information and power transfer in a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system. The advantage of LS-MIMO relay is exploited to enhance wireless security, transmission rate and energy efficiency. In particular, the challenging issues incurred by short interception distance and long transfer distance are well addressed simultaneously. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, this paper investigates the impact of imperfect CSI, and obtains an explicit expression of the secrecy outage capacity in terms of transmit power and channel condition. Then, we propose an optimal power splitting scheme at the relay to maximize the secrecy outage capacity. Finally, our theoretical claims are validated by simulation results.

Statistical Precoder Design for Space-Time-Frequency Block Codes in Multiuser MISO-MC-CDMA Systems

In this paper, we present a space-time-frequency joint block coding (STFBC) scheme to exploit the essential space-time-frequency degrees of freedom of multiuser MISO-MC-CDMA systems. Specifically, we use a series of orthogonal random codes to spread the space time code over several sub-carriers to obtain multi-diversity gains, while multiuser parallel transmission is applied over the same sub-carriers by making use of multiple orthogonal code channels. Furthermore, to improve the system performance, we put forward to linear precoding to the predetermined orthogonal STFBC, including transmitting directions selection and power allocation over these directions. We propose a precoder design method by making use of channel statistical information in time domain based on the Kronecker correlation model for the channels, so feedback amount can be decreased largely in multi-carrier systems. In addition, we give the performance analysis from the perspectives of diversity order and coding gain, respectively. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, we derive some simple precoder design methods, while guaranteeing a good performance. Finally, numerical results validate our theoretical claims.

Adaptive Mode Selection in Multiuser MISO Cognitive Networks with Limited Cooperation and Feedback

In this paper, we consider a multiuser MISO downlink cognitive network coexisting with a primary network. With the purpose of exploiting the spatial degree of freedom to counteract the inter-network interference and intra-network (inter-user) interference simultaneously, we propose to perform zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) at the multi-antenna cognitive base station (BS) based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). The challenge of designing ZFBF in cognitive networks lies in how to obtain the interference CSI. To solve it, we introduce a limited inter-network cooperation protocol, namely the quantized CSI conveyance from the primary receiver to the cognitive BS via purchase. Clearly, the more the feedback amount, the better the performance, but the higher the feedback cost. In order to achieve a balance between the performance and feedback cost, we take the maximization of feedback utility function, defined as the difference of average sum rate and feedback cost while satisfying the interference constraint, as the optimization objective, and derive the transmission mode and feedback amount joint optimization scheme. Moreover, we quantitatively investigate the impact of CSI feedback delay and obtain the corresponding optimization scheme. Furthermore, through asymptotic analysis, we present some simple schemes. Finally, numerical results confirm the effectiveness of our theoretical claims.

Energy-Efficient Optimization for Physical Layer Security in Multi-Antenna Downlink Networks with QoS Guarantee

In this letter, we consider a multi-antenna downlink network where a secure user (SU) coexists with a passive eavesdropper. There are two design requirements for such a network. First, the information should be transferred in a secret and efficient manner. Second, the quality of service (QoS), i.e. delay sensitivity, should be take into consideration to satisfy the demands of real-time wireless services. In order to fulfill the two requirements, we combine the physical layer security technique based on switched beam beamforming with an energy-efficient power allocation. The problem is formulated as the maximization of the secrecy energy efficiency subject to delay and power constraints. By solving the optimization problem, we derive an energy-efficient power allocation scheme. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this letter, we consider a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where the receiver should harvest energy from the transmitter by wireless power transfer to support its wireless information transmission. The energy beamforming in the large-scale MIMO system is utilized to address the challenging problem of long-distance wireless power transfer. Furthermore, considering the limitation of the power in such a system, this letter focuses on the maximization of the energy efficiency of information transmission (bit per Joule) while satisfying the quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, i.e. delay constraint, by jointly optimizing transfer duration and transmit power. By solving the optimization problem, we derive an energy-efficient resource allocation scheme. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Interference-Aware Resource Control in Multi-Antenna Cognitive Ad Hoc Networks with Heterogeneous Delay Constraints

In this work, we consider a multi-antenna cognitive ad hoc network (CAHNet) with heterogeneous delay requirements. To fulfill the interference and delay constraints simultaneously, we propose to perform adaptive zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) at cognitive transmitters according to interference channel state information (CSI). To assist the CAHNet to obtain the interference CSI, we use a win-win inter-network cooperation strategy, namely quantized interference CSI feedback from the primary network to CAHNet through a feedback link, under the condition that the CAHNet pays a proper price for it. Considering the scarcity of feedback and power resources, we focus on the minimization of the overall resource cost subject to both interference and delay constraints. To solve the problem, we derive a joint feedback and power control algorithm amongst multiple links of CAHNet. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Performance Analysis for Physical Layer Security in Multi-Antenna Downlink Networks with Limited CSI Feedback

Channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is of importance to the performance of physical layer security based on multi-antenna networks. Specifically, CSI is not only beneficial to improve the capacity of the legitimate channel, but also can be used to degrade the performance of the eavesdropper channel. Thus, the secrecy rate increases accordingly. This letter focuses on the quantitative analysis of the ergodic secrecy sum-rate in terms of feedback amount of the CSI from the legitimate users in multiuser multi-antenna downlink networks. Furthermore, the asymptotic characteristics of the ergodic secrecy sum-rate in two extreme cases is investigated in some detail. Finally, our theoretical claims are confirmed by the numerical results.

Resource Allocation for Cost Minimization in Limited Feedback MU-MIMO Systems with Delay Guarantee

In this paper, we design a resource allocation framework for the delay-sensitive Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) broadcast system with limited feedback. Considering the scarcity and interrelation of the transmit power and feedback bandwidth, it is imperative to optimize the two resources in a joint and efficient manner while meeting the delay-QoS requirement. Based on the effective bandwidth theory, we first obtain a closed-form expression of average violation probability with respect to a given delay requirement as a function of transmit power and codebook size of feedback channel. By minimizing the total resource cost, we derive an optimal joint resource allocation scheme, which can flexibly adjust the transmit power and feedback bandwidth according to the characteristics of the system. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, some simple resource allocation schemes are presented. Finally, the theoretical claims are validated by numerical results.

Wireless Energy and Information Transfer Tradeoff for Limited Feedback Multi-Antenna Systems with Energy Beamforming

In this paper, we consider a multi-antenna system where the receiver should harvest energy from the transmitter by wireless energy transfer to support its wireless information transmission. In order to maximize the harvesting energy, we propose to perform adaptive energy beamforming according to the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). To help the transmitter to obtain the CSI for energy beamforming, we further propose a win-win CSI quantization feedback strategy, so as to improve the efficiencies of both power and information transmission. The focus of this paper is on the tradeoff of wireless energy and information transfer by adjusting the transfer duration with a total duration constraint. Through revealing the relationship between transmit power, transfer duration and feedback amount, we derive two wireless energy and information transfer tradeoff schemes by maximizing an upper bound and an approximate lower bound of the average information transmission rate, respectively. Moreover, the impact of imperfect CSI at the receiver is investigated and the corresponding wireless energy and information transfer tradeoff scheme is also given. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
