Model form uncertainty quantification of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes modeling of flows over a SD7003 airfoil

It is well known that the Boussinesq turbulent viscosity hypothesis can yield inaccurate predictions when complex f low features are involved, e.g. laminar-turbulent transition. The focus of the study is to explore the capability of a physics-based uncertainty quantification (UQ) approach to quantify the model-form uncertainty in Reynolds-averaged Naiver-Stokes (RANS) simulations of laminar-turbulent transitional flows over an Selig-Donovan (SD) 7003 airfoil. This methodology perturbs the modeled Reynolds stress tensor in the momentum equations; perturbations are injected into the amplitude, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the anisotropy Reynolds stress tensor undergone an eigen-decomposition. In this study, our analyses focus upon the amplitude perturbation. We observed a monotonic behavior of the magnitude of the predicted uncertainty bounds for different quantities of interest. High-order regressions based on the turbulence kinetic energy discrepancies are used to develop a novel switch marker function Mk to introduce perturbations in a non-uniform manner over different regions of the domain based upon prior knowledge of the limitations of the model. Importantly, the compound effect of Mk and eigenvalue perturbations show a synergy behavior, e.g., dramatically increased uncertainty bounds to account for the discrepancy in the RANS prediction; and the Mk function effectively avoids over-perturbation to the amplitude of the anisotropy Reynolds stress tensor. In this context, regression based amplitude perturbation of the anisotropy Reynolds stress tensor makes a new contribution to the RANS UQ methodology in the simulations of the airfoil transitional flows, which shows very encouraging results.

Averaged fidelity-based steering criteria

In the present work, the averaged fidelity is introduced as the steering parameter. According to the definitions of steering from Alice to Bob, a general scheme for designing linear steering criteria is developed for a high-dimensional system. For a given set of measurements on Bob's side, two quantities, the so-called nonsteering thresholds, can be defined. If the measured averaged fidelity exceeds these thresholds, the state shared by Alice and Bob is steerable from Alice to Bob, and the measurements performed by Alice are also verified to be incompatible. Within the general scheme, we also construct a linear steering inequality when the set of measurements performed by Bob has a continuous setting. Some applications are also provided.

Diagnosing steerability of a bipartite state with the nonsteering threshold

In the present work, a traditional quantity, the averaged fidelity, is introduced as the steering parameter. From the definitions of steering from Alice to Bob and the joint measurability, a general scheme is developed to design linear steering criteria. For a given set of measurements on Bob's side, the so-called nonsteering threshold is defined to quantify the ability to detect steering. If the measured averaged fidelity exceeds this threshold, it is shown that the state shared by Alice and Bob is steerable from Alice to Bob, and the measurements performed by Alice are also verified to be incompatible. Within the general scheme, a discussion about how to design optimal criteria is provided for two different scenarios: (a) to find the optimal measurements on Bob's side when the state is unknown and (b) to find the optimal measurements for Alice when the state and the measurements on Bob's side are given.

Magnetic order induced polarization anomaly of Raman scattering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$

The recent discovery of 2D magnets has revealed various intriguing phenomena due to the coupling between spin and other degree of freedoms (such as helical photoluminescence, nonreciprocal SHG). Previous research on the spin-phonon coupling effect mainly focuses on the renormalization of phonon frequency. Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$. For monolayer samples, the dominant A$\rm_{1g}$ peak shows abnormally high intensity in the cross polarization channel at low temperature, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. While for bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Generality of the concatenated five-qubit code

In this work, a quantum error correction (QEC) procedure with the concatenated five-qubit code is used to construct a near-perfect effective qubit channel (with a error below $10^{-5}$) from arbitrary noise channels. The exact performance of the QEC is characterized by a Choi matrix, which can be obtained via a simple and explicit protocol. In a noise model with five free parameters, our numerical results indicate that the concatenated five-qubit code is general: To construct a near-perfect effective channel from the noise channels, the necessary size of the concatenated five-qubit code depends only on the entanglement fidelity of the initial noise channels.

Geometric discord: A resource for increments of quantum key distribution through twirling

In the present work, we consider a scenario where an arbitrary two-qubit pure state is applied to generate a randomly distributed key via the generalized EPR protocol. Using the twirling procedure to convert the pure state into a Werner state, the error rate of the key can be reduced by a factor of $2/3$. This effect indicates that entanglement is not the sufficient resource of the generalized EPR protocol since it is not increased in the twirling procedure. Instead of entanglement, the geometric discord is suggested to be the general quantum resource for this task.

Quantum discord for the general two-qubit case

Recently, Girolami and Adesso have demonstrated that the calculation of quantum discord for two-qubit case can be viewed as to solve a pair of transcendental equation (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 83}, 052108(2011)). In present work, we introduce the generalized Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism and apply it as a convenient tool for constructing transcendental equations. For the general two-qubit case, we show that the transcendental equations always have a finite set of universal solutions, this result can be viewed as a generalization of the one get by Ali, Rau, and Alber (Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 81}, 042105 (2010)). For a subclass of $X$ state, we find the analytical solutions by solving the transcendental equations.

A protocol to estimate the average fidelity of the bipartite system

In present work, we shall develope a protocol to estimate the average fidelity for the bipartite system. We show that the average fidelity should be known if the three measurable quantities, the average survive probability of the product state and the the average survive probablity of each subsystem, have been decided. Our protocol can be also applied to decide the selected element of the quantum proess matrix.

Economical standard quantum process tomography

Recently, Bendersky \emph{et al.} developed a method to complete the task of characterizing an arbitrary $χ$ matrix element in a scalable way, Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. \textbf{100}, 190403(2008), where an auxiliary system was needed. In present work, we shall show that the same task can also be completed within the scheme of standard quantum process tomography (SQPT) where there is no requirement for ancilla. Our method depends on two observations: With the elaborately chosen operators basis, the SQPT may have an economical form where a single run of experiment, in which we measure the expectation value of a chosen operator in the outport of the quantum channel with a known input, is sufficient to characterize a selected $χ$ matrix element; With the progress recently achieved in quantum entanglement detection, we also find that the number of the experimental settings to realize the experiment for the selected $χ$ matrix element does not exceed 2N for the N-qubits system. For practice, our scheme can be applied for the cases where the controlled two-body interaction is neither available nor desirable.

Group-theoretic approach for multi-copy programmable discriminators between two unknown qudit states

The discrimination between two unknown states can be performed by a universal programmable discriminator, where the copies of the two possible states are stored in two program systems respectively and the copies of data, which we want to confirm, are provided in the data system. In the present paper, we propose a group-theretic approach to the multi-copy programmable state discrimination problem. By equivalence of unknown pure states to known mixed states and with the representation theory of U(n) group, we construct the Jordan basis to derive the analytical results for both the optimal unambiguous discrimination and minimum-error discrimination. The POVM operators for unambiguous discrimination and orthogonal measurement operators for minimum-error discrimination are obtained. We find that the optimal failure probability and minimum-error probability for the discrimination between the mean input mixd states are dependent on the dimension of the unknown qudit states. We applied the approach to generalize the results of He and Bergou (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 032316 (2007)) from qubit to qudit case, and we further solve the problem of programmable dicriminators with arbitrary copies of unknown states in both program and data systems.

Designing optimal quantum cloning machine for qubit system

Following the work of Niu and Griffiths, in \emph{Phys.Rev.A 58, 4377(1998)}, we shall investigate the problem, how to design the optimal quantum cloning machines (QCMs) for qubit system, with the help of Bloch-sphere representation. In stead of the quality factor there, the Fiuráusek's optimal condition, where the optimal cloning machine should maximize a convex mixture of the average fidelity, is used as the optimality criterion in present protocol. Almost all of the known optimal QCMs in previous works, the cloning for states with fixed polar angle, the phase-covariant cloning, the universal QCMs, the cloning for two arbitrary pure states, and the mirror phase-covariant cloning, should be discussed in a systematic way. The known results, the optimal fidelities for various input ensembles according to different optimality criteria, are recovered here. Our present scheme also offers a general way of constructing the unitary transformation to realize the optimal cloning.

Five-Fold Reduction of Lasing Threshold near the First $ΓL$-Pseudogap of ZnO Inverse Opals

We report room temperature lasing in ZnO inverse opal photonic crystals in the near-ultraviolet (UV) frequency. We observe random lasing due to disorder in the structures when the photonic pseudogaps are located away from the ZnO gain spectrum. Tuning the first $ΓL$-pseudogap to the gain peak leads to a five-fold reduction in lasing threshold and frequency shift of lasing modes due to the enhanced confinement of light.

A New Approach to the Calculation of Some Properties of Vacuum and $π$ and $σ$ Mesons

It is shown in a systematic way that the instanton dilute model can be combined with the global colour symmetry model to form a new nonperturbative QCD model. Based on the quark propagator derived in the instanton dilute liquid approximation, the quark condensate $<\bar{q}q>$, the mixed quark gluon condensate $g_{s}<\bar{q}G_{μν}σ^{μν}q>$, the four quark condensate $<|bar{q}Γq\bar{q}Γq>$ and tensor, pion vacuum susceptibilities have been calculated at the mean field level in the framework of the new nonperturbative QCD model. The numerical results are compatible with the values obtained within other nonperturbative approaches. The calculated masses and decay constants of $π$ and $σ$ mesons are also close to the experimental values.
