Analytic torsion for log-Enriques surfaces and Borcherds product

We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac{1}{4}(1,1)$. The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with $k$ singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type %of dimension $10-k$ associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$. We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function on the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$. As a consequence, the BCOV invariant in this case is not a birational invariant, unlike the Calabi-Yau case.

Gromov Rigidity of Bi-Invariant Metrics on Lie Groups and Homogeneous Spaces

Gromov asked if the bi-invariant metrics on a compact Lie group are extremal compared to any other metrics. In this note, we prove that the bi-invariant metrics on a compact connected semi-simple Lie group $G$ are extremal (in fact rigid) in the sense of Gromov when compared to the left-invariant metrics. In fact the same result holds for a compact connected homogeneous manifold $G/H$ with $G$ compact connect and semi-simple.

Maximal volume entropy rigidity for $\mathsf{RCD}^*(-(N-1),N)$ spaces

For $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds $M$ with Ricci curvature bounded below by $-(n-1)$, the volume entropy is bounded above by $n-1$. If $M$ is compact, it is known that the equality holds if and only if $M$ is hyperbolic. We extend this result to $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}(-(N-1),N)$ spaces. While the upper bound is straightforward, the rigidity case is quite involved due to the lack of a smooth structure in $\mathsf{RCD}^{\ast}$ spaces. As an application we obtain an almost rigidity result which partially recovers a result by Cheng-Rong-Xu for Riemannian manifolds.

Comparison between two analytic torsions on orbifolds

In this paper, we establish an equality between the analytic torsion introduced by Dar\cite{MR876230} and the orbifold analytic torsion defined by Ma \cite{MR2140438} on a compact manifold with isolated conical singularities which in addition has an orbifold structure. We assume the orbifold flat vector bundle is an honest vector bundle, although the metric on the flat bundle may not be flat.

Eta invariant and holonomy, the even dimensional case

In previous work, we introduced eta invariants for even dimensional manifolds. It plays the same role as the eta invariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer, which is for odd dimensional manifolds. It is associated to $K^1$ representatives on even dimensional manifolds and is closely related to the so called WZW theory in physics. In fact, it is an intrinsic interpretation of the Wess-Zumino term without passing to the bounding 3-manifold. Spectrally the eta invariant is defined on a finite cylinder, rather than on the manifold itself. Thus it is an interesting question to find an intrinsic spectral interpretation of this new invariant. We address this issue here using adiabatic limit technique. The general formulation relates the (mod $\mathbb Z$ reduction of) eta invariant for even dimensional manifolds with the holonomy of the determinant line bundle of a natural family of Dirac type operators. In this sense our result might be thought of as an even dimensional analogue of Witten's holonomy theorem proved by Bismut-Freed and Cheeger independently.

Eta-Invariants and Determinant Lines

We study eta-invariants on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary. The dependence on boundary conditions is best summarized by viewing the (exponentiated) eta-invariant as an element of the (inverse) determinant line of the boundary. We prove a gluing law and a variation formula for this invariant. This yields a new, simpler proof of the holonomy formula for the determinant line bundle of a family of Dirac operators, also known as the ``global anomaly'' formula.
