On positive scalar curvature and moduli of curves

In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichmüller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichmüller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

A Global Torelli Theorem for Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We describe the proof that the period map from the Torelli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds to the classifying space of polarized Hodge structures is an embedding. The proof is based on the constructions of holomorphic affine structure on the Teichmüller space and Hodge metric completion of the Torelli space. A canonical global holomorphic section of the holomorphic $(n, 0)$ class on the Teichmüller space is constructed.

preprint2016arXiv

Applications of the affine structures on the Teichmüller spaces

We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and hyperkähler manifolds.

Curvatures of moduli space of curves and applications

In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, ω_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient.

From local Torelli to global Torelli

We introduce the notions of strong local Torelli and T-class for polarized manifolds, and prove that strong local Torelli implies global Torelli theorem on the Torelli spaces for polarized manifolds in the T-class. We discuss many new examples of projective manifolds for which such global Torelli theorem holds. As applications we prove that, in these cases, a canonical completion of the Torelli space is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in complex Euclidean space, and show that generic Torelli implies global Torelli on moduli space with certain level structure.

Global Torelli Theorem for Projective Manifolds of Calabi-Yau Type

We prove that the period maps from the Torelli space and the moduli space with level $m$ structure of Calabi-Yau type manifolds to the corresponding period domain of polarized Hodge structures are injective. The proof is based on the construction of holomorphic affine structure on the Teichmüller space and the construction of the completion space of the Torelli space with respect to the Hodge metric.

Heat kernel coefficients on Kahler manifolds

Polterovich proved a remarkable closed formula for heat kernel coefficients of the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds involving powers of Laplacians acting on the distance function. In the case of Kähler manifolds, we prove a combinatorial formula for powers of the complex Laplacian and use it to derive an explicit graph theoretic formula for the numerics in heat coefficients as a linear combination of metric jets based on Polterovich's formula.

Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds

In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level $m$ structure is also injective.

Logarithmic vanishing theorems on compact Kähler manifolds I

In this paper, we first establish an $L^2$-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hörmander's $L^2$-estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kähler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Gibrau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Ricci Curvatures on Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the $(1,1)$- component of the curvature $2$-form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds $S^{2n-1}\times S^1$. We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifolds such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and nonnegative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.

Congruent skein relations for colored HOMFLY-PT invariants and colored Jones polynomials

Colored HOMFLY-PT invariant, the generalization of the colored Jones polynomial, is one of the most important quantum invariants of links. This paper is devoted to investigating the basic structures of the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants of links. By using the HOMFLY-PT skein theory, firstly, we show that the (reformulated) colored HOMFLY-PT invariants actually lie in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[(q-q^{-1})^2,t^{\pm 1}]$. Secondly, we establish some symmetric formulas for colored HOMFLY-PT invariants of links, which include the rank-level duality as an easy consequence. Finally, motivated by the Labastida-Mariño-Ooguri-Vafa conjecture for framed links, we propose congruent skein relations for (reformulated) colored HOMFLY-PT invariants which are the generalizations of the skein relation for classical HOMFLY-PT polynomials. Then we study the congruent skein relation for colored Jones polynomials. In fact, we obtain a succinct formula for the case of knot. As an application, we prove a vanishing result for Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of a family of 3-manifolds. Finally we study the congruent skein relations for $SU(n)$ quantum invariants.

Effective vanishing theorems for ample and globally generated vector bundles

By proving an integral formula of the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$, we observe that the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$ is very similar to that of a line bundle and obtain certain new Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing theorems for vector bundles. As special cases, we deduce vanishing theorems for ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles by analytic method instead of the Leray-Borel-Le Potier spectral sequence.

Modular invariance and anomaly cancellation formulas in odd dimension

By studying modular invariance properties of some characteristic forms, we get some new anomaly cancellation formulas on $(4r-1)$ dimensional manifolds. As an application, we derive some results on divisibilities of the index of Toeplitz operators on $(4r-1)$ dimensional spin manifolds and some congruent formulas on characteristic number for $(4r-1)$ dimensional spin$^c$ manifolds.

Volume conjecture for $SU(n)$-invariants

This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

A geometric heat flow for vector fields

In this paper we introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution of this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. The similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied in \cite{LL2}.

Hermitian Harmonic maps and non-degenerate curvatures

In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Quantum Correction and the Moduli Spaces of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We define the quantum correction of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ Φ(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $Φ$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperkähler manifold of dimension $2n \geq 4$, we find both locally and globally defined families of $(2,0)$ and $(2n,0)$-classes over the Teichmüller space of polarized Hyperkähler manifolds.

Quasi-isometry and deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds

We prove several formulas related to Hodge theory and the Kodaira-Spencer-Kuranishi deformation theory of Kähler manifolds. As applications, we present a construction of globally convergent power series of integrable Beltrami differentials on Calabi-Yau manifolds and also a construction of global canonical family of holomorphic $(n,0)$-forms on the deformation spaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Similar constructions are also applied to the deformation spaces of compact Kähler manifolds.

Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

A Basis of the $q$-Schur Module

In this paper, we construct the $q$-Schur modules as left principle ideals of the cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras, and prove that they are isomorphic to those cell modules defined in \cite{8} and \cite{15} at any level $r$. Then we prove that these $q$-Schur modules are free modules and construct their bases. This result gives us new versions of several results about the standard basis and the branching theorem. With the help of such realizations and the new bases, we re-prove the Branch rule of Weyl modules which was first discovered and proved by Wada in \cite{23}.

Curvatures of direct image sheaves of vector bundles and applications I

Let $p:\sXS$ be a proper Kähler fibration and $\sE\sX$ a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle. As motivated by the work of Berndtsson(\cite{Berndtsson09a}), by using basic Hodge theory, we derive several general curvature formulas for the direct image $p_*(K_{\sX/S}\ts \sE)$ for general Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle $\sE$ in a simple way. A straightforward application is that, if the family $\sXS$ is infinitesimally trivial and Hermitian vector bundle $\sE$ is Nakano-negative along the base $S$, then the direct image $p_*(K_{\sX/S}\ts \sE)$ is Nakano-negative. We also use these curvature formulas to study the moduli space of projectively flat vector bundles with positive first Chern classes and obtain that, if the Chern curvature of direct image $p_*(K_{X}\ts E)$--of a positive projectively flat family $(E,h(t))_{t\in \mathbb D}X$--vanishes, then the curvature forms of this family are connected by holomorphic automorphisms of the pair $(X,E)$.

Anomaly Cancellation and Modularity

It has been shown that the Alvarez-Gaum$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$-Witten miraculous anomaly cancellation formula in type IIB superstring theory and its various generalizations can be derived from modularity of certain characteristic forms. In this paper, we show that the Green-Schwarz formula and the Schwarz-Witten formula in type I superstring theory can also be derived from the modularity of those characteristic forms and thus unify the Alvarez-Gaum$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$-Witten formula, the Green-Schwarz formula as well as the Schwarz-Witten formula in the same framework. Various generalizations of these remarkable formulas are also established.

Anomaly Cancellation and Modularity. II: $E_8\times E_8$ case

In this paper we show that both of the Green-Schwarz anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group $E_8\times E_8$ and the Hořava-Witten anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group $E_8$ can be derived through modular forms of weight 14. This answers a question of J. H. Schwarz. We also establish generalizations of these factorization formulas and obtain a new Hořava-Witten type factorization formula.

Mean curvature flow of higher codimension in Riemannian manifolds

We investigate the convergence of the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. We prove that if the initial submanifold satisfies a pinching condition, then along the mean curvature flow the submanifold contracts smoothly to a round point in finite time. As a consequence we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.

Formal pseudodifferential operators and Witten's r-spin numbers

We derive an effective recursion for Witten's r-spin intersection numbers, using Witten's conjecture relating r-spin numbers to the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy (Theorem 4.1). Consequences include closed-form descriptions of the intersection numbers (for example, in terms of gamma functions: Propositions 5.2 and 5.4, Corollary 5.5). We use these closed-form descriptions to prove Harer-Zagier's formula for the Euler characteristic of M_{g,1}. Finally in Section 6, we extend Witten's series expansion formula for the Landau-Ginzburg potential to study r-spin numbers in the small phase space in genus zero. Our key tool is the calculus of formal pseudodifferential operators, and is partially motivated by work of Brezin and Hikami.

Generalized Ricci flow I: Local existence and uniqueness

In this paper we investigate a kind of generalized Ricci flow which possesses a gradient form. We study the monotonicity of the given function under the generalized Ricci flow and prove that the related system of partial differential equations are strictly and uniformly parabolic. Based on this, we show that the generalized Ricci flow defined on a $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold admits a unique short-time smooth solution. Moreover, we also derive the evolution equations for the curvatures, which play an important role in our future study.

Positivity and vanishing theorems for ample vector bundles

In this paper, we study the Nakano-positivity and dual-Nakano-positivity of certain adjoint vector bundles associated to ample vector bundles. As applications, we get new vanishing theorems about ample vector bundles. For example, we prove that if $E$ is an ample vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold $X$, $S^kE\ts \det E$ is both Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive for any $k\geq 0$. Moreover, $H^{n,q}(X,S^kE\ts \det E)=H^{q,n}(X,S^kE\ts \det E)=0$ for any $q\geq 1$. In particular, if $(E,h)$ is a Griffiths-positive vector bundle, the naturally induced Hermitian vector bundle $(S^kE\ts \det E, S^kh\ts \det h)$ is both Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive for any $k\geq 0$.

The extension and convergence of mean curvature flow in higher codimension

In this paper, we first investigate the integral curvature condition to extend the mean curvature flow of submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold with codimension $d\geq1$, which generalizes the extension theorem for the mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces due to Le-Šešum \cite{LS} and the authors \cite{XYZ1,XYZ2}. Using the extension theorem, we prove two convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds in ${R}^{n+d}$ under suitable integral curvature conditions.

Geometry of Hermitian manifolds

On Hermitian manifolds, the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. By refining the Bochner formulas for any Hermitian complex vector bundle (Riemannain real vector bundle) with an arbitrary metric connection over a compact Hermitian manifold, we can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and complex vector bundles by the second Ricci curvature tensors. We will also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Gravitational Anomaly Cancellation and Modular Invariance

In this paper, by combining modular forms and characteristic forms, we obtain general anomaly cancellation formulas of any dimension. For $4k+2$ dimensional manifolds, our results include the gravitational anomaly cancellation formulas of Alvarez-Gaumé and Witten in dimensions 2, 6 and 10 (\cite{AW}) as special cases. In dimension $4k+1$, we derive anomaly cancellation formulas for index gerbes. In dimension $4k+3$, we obtain certain results about eta invariants, which are interesting in spectral geometry.

Hyperbolic Gradient Flow: Evolution of Graphs in R^{n+1}

In this paper we introduce a new geometric flow --- the hyperbolic gradient flow for graphs in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. This kind of flow is new and very natural to understand the geometry of manifolds. We particularly investigate the global existence of the evolution of convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and the evolution of plane curves, and prove that, under the hyperbolic gradient flow, they converge to the hyperplane and the straight line, respectively, when $t$ goes to the infinity. Our results show that the theory of shock waves of hyperbolic conservation laws can be naturally applied to do surgery on manifolds. Some fundamental but open problems are also given.

Hyperbolic Mean Curvature Flow

In this paper we introduce the hyperbolic mean curvature flow and prove that the corresponding system of partial differential equations are strictly hyperbolic, and based on this, we show that this flow admits a unique short-time smooth solution and possesses the nonlinear stability defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. We derive nonlinear wave equations satisfied by some geometric quantities related to the hyperbolic mean curvature flow. Moreover, we also discuss the relation between the equations for hyperbolic mean curvature flow and the equations for extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space-time.

Life-span of classical solutions to hyperbolic geometric flow in two space variables with slow decay initial data

In this paper we investigate the life-span of classical solutions to the hyperbolic geometric flow in two space variables with slow decay initial data. By establishing some new estimates on the solutions of linear wave equations in two space variables, we give a lower bound of the life-span of classical solutions to the hyperbolic geometric flow with asymptotic flat initial Riemann surfaces.

Intersection numbers and automorphisms of stable curves

Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Recursion formulae of higher Weil-Petersson volumes

In this paper we study effective recursion formulae for computing intersection numbers of mixed $ψ$ and $κ$ classes on moduli spaces of curves. By using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we generalize Mulase-Safnuk form of Mirzakhani's recursion and prove a recursion formula of higher Weil-Petersson volumes. We also present recursion formulae to compute intersection pairings in the tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves.

The n-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

Using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we prove a recursive formula of the $n$-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. It has been used to prove the Faber intersection number conjecture and motivated us to find some conjectural vanishing identities for Gromov-Witten invariants. The latter has been proved recently by X. Liu and R. Pandharipande. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of $n$-point functions in terms of summation over binary trees.

Time-Periodic Solutions of the Einstein's Field Equations

In this paper, we develop a new method to find the exact solutions of the Einstein's field equations by using which we construct time-periodic solutions. The singularities of the time-periodic solutions are investigated and some new physical phenomena, such as the time-periodic event horizon, are found. The applications of these solutions in modern cosmology and general relativity are expected.

Time-Periodic Solutions of the Einstein's Field Equations II

In this paper, we construct several kinds of new time-periodic solutions of the vacuum Einstein's field equations whose Riemann curvature tensors vanish, keep finite or take the infinity at some points in these space-times, respectively. The singularities of these new time-periodic solutions are investigated and some new physical phenomena are found. The applications of these solutions in modern cosmology and general relativity can be expected.

New properties of the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

We present certain new properties about the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$, including a simple explicit formula of $n$-point functions and several new identities of intersection numbers. In particular we prove a new identity, which together with a conjectural identity implies the famous Faber's conjecture about relations in $\mathcal R^{g-2}(\sM_g)$. These new identities clarify the mysterious constant in Faber's conjecture and uncover novel combinatorial structures of intersection numbers. We also discuss some numerical properties of Hodge integrals which have provided numerous inspirations for this work.

New results of intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves

We present a series of new results we obtained recently about the intersection numbers of tautological classes on moduli spaces of curves, including a simple formula of the n-point functions for Witten's $τ$ classes, an effective recursion formula to compute higher Weil-Petersson volumes, several new recursion formulae of intersection numbers and our proof of a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber concerning denominators of intersection numbers. We also present Virasoro and KdV properties of generating functions of general mixed $κ$ and $ψ$ intersections.
