Ising model close to $d=2$

The $d=2$ critical Ising model is described by an exactly solvable Conformal Field Theory (CFT). The deformation to $d=2+ε$ is a relatively simple system at strong coupling outside of even dimensions. Using novel numerical and analytical conformal bootstrap methods in Lorentzian signature, we show that the leading corrections to the Ising data are more singular than $ε$. There must be infinitely many new states due to the $d$-dependence of conformal symmetry. The linear independence of conformal blocks is central to this bootstrap approach, which can be extended to more rigorous studies of non-positive systems, such as non-unitary, defect/boundary and thermal CFTs.

Strange Hadron Spectroscopy with Secondary KL Beam in Hall D

We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $Λ$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cosθ$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $Kπ$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(Kπ)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $κ/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Subsequently improving our knowledge of the low-lying scalar nonet in general.

Closed-form expression for cross-channel conformal blocks near the lightcone

In the study of conformal field theories, conformal blocks in the lightcone limit are fundamental to the analytic conformal bootstrap method. Here we consider the lightcone limit of 4-point functions of generic scalar primaries. Based on the nonperturbative pole structure in spin of Lorentzian inversion, we propose the natural basis functions for cross-channel conformal blocks. In this new basis, we find a closed-form expression for crossed conformal blocks in terms of the Kampé de Fériet function, which applies to intermediate operators of arbitrary spin in general dimensions. We derive the general Lorentzian inversion for the case of identical external scaling dimensions. Our results for the lightcone limit also shed light on the complete analytic structure of conformal blocks in the lightcone expansion.

Coupled density-spin Bose-Einstein condensates dynamics and collapse in systems with quintic nonlinearity

We investigate the effects of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting on the coupled density-spin dynamics and collapse of the Bose-Einstein condensate driven by the quintic self-attraction in the same- and cross-spin channels. The characteristic feature of the collapse is the decrease in the width as given by the participation ratio of the density rather than by the expectation values of the coordinate. Qualitative arguments and numerical simulations reveal the existence of a critical spin-orbit coupling strength which either prohibits or leads to the collapse, and its dependence on other parameters, such as the condensates norm, spin-dependent nonlinear coupling, and the Zeeman splitting. The entire nonlinear dynamics critically depend on the initial spin sate.

On the absence of the Boulware-Deser ghost in novel graviton kinetic terms

Using novel nonlinear kinetic terms for gravitons, a large class of bi-gravity models were constructed, which are potentially free of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. In this work, we derive their Hamiltonians using the ADM formalism, and verify that the BD ghost is eliminated by additional constraints. The general Hamiltonian structure is analogous to that of the other class of bi-gravity models free of the BD ghost.

Unifying Ghost-Free Lorentz-Invariant Lagrangians

We present the details of the novel framework for Lagrangian field theories that are Lorentz-invariant and lead to at most second order equations of motion. The use of antisymmetric structure is of crucial importance. The general ghost-free Lagrangians are constructed and then translated into the language of differential forms. The ghost-freeness has a geometric nature. A novel duality is proposed which generalizes the Hodge duality in Maxwell's theory. We discuss how the well-established theories are reformulated and propose many new theories.

Holographic RG flow and the Quantum Effective Action

The calculation of the full (renormalized) holographic action is undertaken in general Einstein-scalar theories. The appropriate formalism is developed and the renormalized effective action is calculated up to two derivatives in the metric and scalar operators. The holographic RG equations involve Ricci flow for the space-time metric as well as the standard $β$-function flow for scalar operators. Several examples are analyzed and the effective action is calculated. A set of conserved quantities of the holographic flow is found, whose interpretation is not yet understood.

No-Go Theorems for Unitary and Interacting Partially Massless Spin-Two Fields

We examine the generic theory of a partially massless (PM) spin-two field interacting with gravity in four dimensions from a bottom-up perspective. By analyzing the most general form of the Lagrangian, we first show that if such a theory exists, its de Sitter background must admit either so(1, 5) or so(2, 4) global symmetry depending on the relative sign of the kinetic terms: the former for a positive sign the latter for a negative sign. Further analysis reveals that the coupling constant of the PM cubic self-interaction must be fixed with a purely imaginary number in the case of a positive sign. We conclude that there cannot exist a unitary theory of a PM spin-two field coupled to Einstein gravity with a perturbatively local Lagrangian. In the case of a negative sign we recover conformal gravity. As a special case of our analysis, it is shown that the PM limit of massive gravity also lacks the PM gauge symmetry.

On the gluon operator effective potential in holographic Yang-Mills theory

The holographic formalism is applied to the calculation of the effective potential for the scalar glueball operator. Three different versions of this operator are defined, and for each we compute the associated effective potential and discuss its properties and scheme ambiguities. Contact is made to earlier attempts to guess this effective potential from the conformal anomaly. We apply our results to the Improved Holographic QCD model calculating the glueball condensate.
