Emergent neutrinos from heavy messengers

Fermionic bound states (mesinos) of messengers can play the role of right-handed neutrinos and due to their heavy masses they can realize the seesaw mechanism providing light and heavy sterile neutrinos. We study simple models with a single mesino to present the proof of principle. We extend our analysis to three mesino states where after the seesaw mechanism, three light and several heavy sterile neutrinos are obtained.

Flavored ABJM theory on the sphere and holographic F-functions

We study strongly coupled ABJM theory on the 3-sphere with massive quenched flavor using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The holographic dual consists of type IIA supergravity with probe D6-branes. The flavor mass is a relevant deformation driving an RG flow whose IR endpoint is pure ABJM theory. At non-zero mass, we find that the theory on the 3-sphere exhibits a quantum phase transition at a critical value of the sphere radius. The transition corresponds to a topology change in the D6-brane embeddings whose dual interpretation is the meson-melting transition. We perform the holographic computation of the free energy on 3-sphere and we use it to construct various candidate F-functions. These were recently proposed in the context of Einstein-scalar gravity to interpolate monotonically between the values of the sphere free energies of the UV and IR CFTs. We find that while the F-functions of the flavored ABJM theory have the correct UV and IR limits, they are not monotonic. We surmise that the non-monotonicity is related to the presence of the phase transition.

Interacting systems and wormholes

We consider a class of tripartite systems for which two $d$-dimensional QFTs are cross-coupled via a third $d+1$-dimensional "messenger" QFT. We analyse in detail the example of a pair of one-dimensional matrix quantum mechanics, coupled via a two-dimensional theory of the BF-type and compute its partition function and simple correlators. This construction is extendible in higher dimensions, using a Chern-Simons "messenger" theory. In all such examples, the exact partition function acquires a form, speculated to correspond to systems dual to Euclidean wormholes and the cross correlators are sufficiently soft and consistent with analogous gravitational calculations. Another variant of the tripartite system is studied, where the messenger theory is described by a non-self-interacting (matrix)-field, reaching similar conclusions. While the Euclidean theories we consider are perfectly consistent, the two possible analytic continuations into Lorentzian signature (messenger vs. boundary QFT directions) of the tripartite models, reveal physical features and "pathologies" resembling those of the expected Lorentzian gravitational backgrounds.

Back-reaction in massless de Sitter QFTs: holography, gravitational DBI action and f(R) gravity

We employ gauge-gravity duality to study the backreaction effect of 4-dimensional large-$N$ quantum field theories on constant-curvature backgrounds, and in particular de Sitter space-time. The field theories considered are holographic QFTs, dual to RG flows between UV and IR CFTs. We compute the holographic QFT contribution to the gravitational effective action for 4d Einstein manifold backgrounds. We find that for a given value of the cosmological constant $λ$, there generically exist two backreacted constant-curvature solutions, as long as $λ< λ_{\textrm{max}} \sim M_p^2 / N^2$, otherwise no such solutions exist. Moreover, the backreaction effect interpolates between that of the UV and IR CFTs. We also find that, at finite cutoff, a holographic theory always reduces the bare cosmological constant, and this is the consequence of thermodynamic properties of the partition function of holographic QFTs on de Sitter.

Holographic QFTs on S$^2\times $S$^2$, spontaneous symmetry breaking and Efimov saddle points

Holographic CFTs and holographic RG flows on space-time manifolds which are $d$-dimensional products of spheres are investigated. On the gravity side, this corresponds to Einstein-dilaton gravity on an asymptotically $AdS_{d+1}$ geometry, foliated by a product of spheres. We focus on holographic theories on $S^2\times S^2$, we show that the only regular five-dimensional bulk geometries have an IR endpoint where one of the sphere shrinks to zero size, while the other remains finite. In the $Z_2$-symmetric limit, where the two spheres have the same UV radii, we show the existence of a infinite discrete set of regular solutions, satisfying an Efimov-like discrete scaling. The $Z_2$-symmetric solution in which both spheres shrink to zero at the endpoint is singular, whereas the solution with lowest free energy is regular and breaks $Z_2$ symmetry spontaneously. We explain this phenomenon analytically by identifying an unstable mode in the bulk around the would-be $Z_2$-symmetric solution. The space of theories have two branches that are connected by a conifold transition in the bulk, which is regular and correspond to a quantum first order transition. Our results also imply that $AdS_5$ does not admit a regular slicing by $S^2\times S^2$.

Non-derivative Axionic Couplings to Nucleons at large and small N

Among the possible CP-odd couplings of the axion to ordinary matter, the most relevant ones for phenomenology are the Yukawa couplings to nucleons. We analyze such non-derivative couplings within three different approaches: standard effective field theory, the Skyrme model and holographic QCD. In all the cases, the couplings can be related to the CP-odd non-derivative couplings to nucleons of the low-lying mesons and the $η'$. Using the effective field theory approach we discuss how to derive the expressions for the CP-odd interaction terms as functions of the parameters of the effective Lagrangian at generic number of colors $N_c$ and flavors $N_f$. Then, we compute the CP-odd couplings to nucleons of the axion, the $η'$ and the pseudo-Goldstone mesons in both the Skyrme and the holographic QCD model with $N_f=2,3$. We present model-independent expressions for the coefficients of the non-derivative axion-nucleon couplings. This allows us to provide quantitative estimates of these couplings.

The self-tuning of the cosmological constant and the holographic relaxion

We propose a brane-world setup based on gauge/gravity duality that permits the simultaneous realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant and a stabilisation of the electroweak hierarchy. The Standard Model dynamics including the Higgs sector is confined to a flat 4-dimensional brane, embedded in a 5-dimensional bulk whose dynamics is governed by Einstein-dilaton-axion gravity. The inclusion of a dynamical bulk axion is new compared to previous implementations of the self-tuning mechanism. Because of the presence of the axion, the model generically exhibits a multitude of static solutions, with different values for the equilibrium position for the brane. Under mild assumptions regarding the dependence of brane parameters on bulk fields, a number of these solutions exhibit electroweak symmetry breaking with a hierarchically small Higgs mass as compared to the cutoff-scale of the brane theory. The realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant is generic and as efficient as in previous constructions without a bulk axion. Vacua with a hierarchically small Higgs mass can sometimes be found, regardless of whether the brane theory depends explicitly on the bulk axion. Because it is expected on general principles that the brane action will depend on the axion, the generation of solutions with a large hierarchy is a robust feature.

Axion RG flows and the holographic dynamics of instanton densities

Axionic holographic RG flow solutions are studied in the context of general Einstein-Axion-Dilaton theories. A non-trivial axion profile is dual to the (non-perturbative) running of the $θ$-term for the corresponding instanton density operator. It is shown that a non-trivial axion solution is incompatible with a non-trivial (holographic) IR conformal fixed point. Imposing a suitable axion regularity condition allows to select the IR geometry in a unique way. The solutions are found analytically in the asymptotic UV and IR regimes, and it is shown that in those regimes the axion backreaction is always negligible. The axion backreaction may become important in the intermediate region of the bulk. To make contact with the axion probe limit solutions, a systematic expansion of the solution is developed. Several concrete examples are worked out numerically. It is shown that the regularity condition always implies a finite allowed range for the axion source parameter in the UV. This translates into the existence of a finite (but large) number of saddle-points in the large $N_c$ limit. This ties in well with axion-swampland conjectures.

Effective holographic theories of momentum relaxation and violation of conductivity bound

We generalize current holographic models with homogeneous breaking of translation symmetry by incorporating higher derivative couplings, in the spirit of effective field theories. Focusing on charge transport, we specialize to two simple couplings between the charge and translation symmetry breaking sectors. We obtain analytical charged black brane solutions and compute their DC conductivity in terms of horizon data. We constrain the allowed values of the couplings and note that the DC conductivity can vanish at zero temperature for strong translation symmetry breaking, thus showing that in general there is no lower bound on the conductivity.

Holographic Competition of Phases and Superconductivity

We use a holographic theory to model and study the competition of four phases: an antiferromagnetic phase, a superconducting phase, a metallic phase and a striped phase, using as control parameters temperature and a doping-like parameter. We analyse the various instabilities and determine the possible phases. One class of phase diagrams, that we analyse in detail, is similar to that of high-temperature superconductors as well as other strange metal materials.

Holographic Photon Production and Anisotropic Flow

The thermal-photon emission from strongly coupled gauge theories at finite temperature via the bottom-up models in holographic QCD in the deconfined phase is studied. The models are constructed to approximately reproduce the electric conductivity obtained from lattice simulations for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The emission rates are then embedded in hydrodynamic simulations combined with prompt photons and hadronic contributions to analyze the spectra and anisotropic flow of direct photons in RHIC and LHC. In general, the holographic models enhance the yield and improve the agreement in spectra, while they reduce the flow in low $p_T$ and increase it in high $p_T$.

Thermalization and confinement in strongly coupled gauge theories

Quantum field theories of strongly interacting matter sometimes have a useful holographic description in terms of the variables of a gravitational theory in higher dimensions. This duality maps time dependent physics in the gauge theory to time dependent solutions of the Einstein equations in the gravity theory. In order to better understand the process by which "real world" theories such as QCD behave out of thermodynamic equilibrium, we study time dependent perturbations to states in a model of a confining, strongly coupled gauge theory via holography. Operationally, this involves solving a set of non-linear Einstein equations supplemented with specific time dependent boundary conditions. The resulting solutions allow one to comment on the timescale by which the perturbed states thermalize, as well as to quantify the properties of the final state as a function of the perturbation parameters. We comment on the influence of the dual gauge theory's confinement scale on these results, as well as the appearance of a previously anticipated universal scaling regime in the "abrupt quench" limit.

Field Theory on Newton-Cartan Backgrounds and Symmetries of the Lifshitz Vacuum

Holography for Lifshitz space-times corresponds to dual field theories on a fixed torsional Newton-Cartan (TNC) background. We examine the coupling of non-relativistic field theories to TNC backgrounds and uncover a novel mechanism by which a global U(1) can become local. This involves the TNC vector $M_μ$ which sources a particle number current, and which for flat NC space-time satisfies $M_μ=\partial_μM$ with a Schroedinger symmetry realized on $M$. We discuss various toy model field theories on flat NC space-time for which the new mechanism leads to extra global space-time symmetries beyond the generic Lifshitz symmetry, allowing for an enhancement to Schroedinger symmetry. On the holographic side, the source $M$ also appears in the Lifshitz vacuum with exactly the same properties as for flat NC space-time. In particular, the bulk diffeomorphisms that preserve the boundary conditions realize a Schroedinger algebra on $M$, allowing for a conserved particle number current. Finally, we present a probe action for a complex scalar field on the Lifshitz vacuum, which exhibits Schroedinger invariance in the same manner as seen in the field theory models.

Lifshitz Space-Times for Schroedinger Holography

We show that asymptotically locally Lifshitz space-times are holographically dual to field theories that exhibit Schroedinger invariance. This involves a complete identification of the sources, which describe torsional Newton-Cartan geometry on the boundary and transform under the Schroedinger algebra. We furthermore identify the dual vevs from which we define and construct the boundary energy-momentum tensor and mass current and show that these obey Ward identities that are organized by the Schroedinger algebra. We also point out that even though the energy flux has scaling dimension larger than z+2, it can be expressed in terms of computable vev/source pairs.

On Holographic Insulators and Supersolids

We obtain holographic realizations for systems that have strong similarities to Mott insulators and supersolids, after examining the ground states of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar systems. The real part of the AC conductivity has a hard gap and a discrete spectrum only. We add momentum dissipation to resolve the delta function in the conductivity due to translational invariance. We develop tools to directly calculate the Drude weight for a large class of solutions and to support our claims. Numerical RG flows are also constructed to verify that such saddle points are IR fixed points of asymptotically AdS_4 geometries.

Scaling of the Holographic AC conductivity for non-Fermi liquids at criticality

The frequency dependence of the AC conductivity is studied in a holographic model of a non-fermi liquid that is amenable to both analytical and numerical computation. In the regime that dissipation dominates the DC conductivity, the AC conductivity is described well in the IR by a Drude peak despite the absence of quasiparticles. In the regime where pair-production-like processes dominate the conductivity there is no Drude peak. A scaling tail is found for the AC conductivity that is independent of the charge density and momentum dissipation. Evidence is given that this scaling tail $σ_{AC}\sim ω^m$ appears generically in quantum critical holographic systems and the associated scaling exponent $m$ is calculated in terms of the Lifshitz and conduction critical exponents.

Schroedinger Invariance from Lifshitz Isometries in Holography and Field Theory

We study non-relativistic field theory coupled to a torsional Newton-Cartan geometry both directly as well as holographically. The latter involves gravity on asymptotically locally Lifshitz space-times. We define an energy-momentum tensor and a mass current and study the relation between conserved currents and conformal Killing vectors for flat Newton-Cartan backgrounds. It is shown that flat NC space-time realizes two copies of the Lifshitz algebra that together form a Schroedinger algebra (without the central element). We show why the Schroedinger scalar model has both copies as symmetries and the Lifshitz scalar model only one. Finally we discuss the holographic dual of this phenomenon by showing that the bulk Lifshitz space-time realizes the same two copies of the Lifshitz algebra.

Thermalization in a Holographic Confining Gauge Theory

Time dependent perturbations of states in the holographic dual of a 3+1 dimensional confining theory are considered. The perturbations are induced by varying the coupling to the theory's most relevant operator. The dual gravitational theory belongs to a class of Einstein-dilaton theories which exhibit a mass gap at zero temperature and a first order deconfining phase transition at finite temperature. The perturbation is realized in various thermal bulk solutions by specifying time dependent boundary conditions on the scalar, and we solve the fully backreacted Einstein-dilaton equations of motion subject to these boundary conditions. We compute the characteristic time scale of many thermalization processes, noting that in every case we examine, this time scale is determined by the imaginary part of the lowest lying quasi-normal mode of the final state black brane. We quantify the dependence of this final state on parameters of the quench, and construct a dynamical phase diagram. Further support for a universal scaling regime in the abrupt quench limit is provided.

Gravitational collapse and thermalization in the hard wall model

We study a simple example of holographic thermalization in a confining field theory: the homogeneous injection of energy in the hard wall model. Working in an amplitude expansion, we find black brane formation for sufficiently fast energy injection and a scattering wave solution for sufficiently slow injection. We comment on our expectations for more sophisticated holographic QCD models.

Gravity and axions from a random UV QFT

It is postulated that the UV QFT is enormous and random. The coupling of the Standard Model to such QFT is analyzed. It is argued that massless 4d gravity and axions are general avatars of the postulate. The equivalence principle emerges naturally as well as a concrete set of sources for its breaking. The axion scale is related to the 4d Planck scale as $f=M_P/N$, where $N$ is the "number of colors" of the (almost) hidden UV CFT.

Holographic Metals and Insulators with Helical Symmetry

Homogeneous, zero temperature scaling solutions with Bianchi VII spatial geometry are constructed in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. They correspond to quantum critical saddle points with helical symmetry at finite density. Assuming $AdS_{5}$ UV asymptotics, the small frequency/(temperature) dependence of the AC/(DC) electric conductivity along the director of the helix are computed. A large class of insulating and conducting anisotropic phases is found, as well as isotropic, metallic phases. Conduction can be dominated by dissipation due to weak breaking of translation symmetry or by a quantum critical current.

Holographic RG flow and the Quantum Effective Action

The calculation of the full (renormalized) holographic action is undertaken in general Einstein-scalar theories. The appropriate formalism is developed and the renormalized effective action is calculated up to two derivatives in the metric and scalar operators. The holographic RG equations involve Ricci flow for the space-time metric as well as the standard $β$-function flow for scalar operators. Several examples are analyzed and the effective action is calculated. A set of conserved quantities of the holographic flow is found, whose interpretation is not yet understood.

On the gluon operator effective potential in holographic Yang-Mills theory

The holographic formalism is applied to the calculation of the effective potential for the scalar glueball operator. Three different versions of this operator are defined, and for each we compute the associated effective potential and discuss its properties and scheme ambiguities. Contact is made to earlier attempts to guess this effective potential from the conformal anomaly. We apply our results to the Improved Holographic QCD model calculating the glueball condensate.

Asymptotic freedom, asymptotic flatness and cosmology

Holographic RG flows in some cases are known to be related to cosmological solutions. In this paper another example of such correspondence is provided. Holographic RG flows giving rise to asymptotically-free $β$-functions have been analyzed in connection with holographic models of QCD. They are shown upon Wick rotation to provide a large class of inflationary models with logarithmically-soft inflaton potentials. The scalar spectral index is universal and depends only on the number of e-foldings. The ratio of tensor to scalar power depends on the single extra real parameter that defines this class of models. The Starobinsky inflationary model as well as the recently proposed models of T-inflation are members of this class. The holographic setup gives a completely new (and contrasting) view to the stability, naturalness and other problems of such inflationary models.

Large-N limits of 2d CFTs, Quivers and AdS_3 duals

We explore the large-N limits of 2d CFTs, focusing mostly on WZW models and their cosets. The $SU(N)_k$ theory is parametrized in this limit by a 't Hooft-like coupling. We show a duality between strong coupling, where the theory is described by almost free fermions, and weak coupling where the theory is described by bosonic fields by an analysis of spectra and correlators. The AdS$_3$ dual is described, and several quantitative checks are performed. Besides the more standard states that should correspond to bulk black holes we find ground states with large degeneracy that can dominate the standard Cardy entropy at weak coupling and are expected to correspond to regular horizonless semiclassical bulk solutions.

The Chern-Simons Diffusion Rate in Improved Holographic QCD

In (3+1)-dimensional SU(Nc) Yang-Mills (YM) theory, the Chern-Simons diffusion rate, Gamma_{CS}, is determined by the zero-momentum, zero-frequency limit of the retarded two-point function of the CP-odd operator tr[F ^ F], with F the YM field strength. The Chern-Simons diffusion rate is a crucial ingredient for many CP-odd phenomena, including the chiral magnetic effect in the quark-gluon plasma. We compute Gamma_{CS} in the high-temperature, deconfined phase of Improved Holographic QCD, a refined holographic model for large-Nc YM theory. Our result for Gamma_{CS}/(sT), where s is entropy density and T is temperature, varies slowly at high T and increases monotonically as T approaches the transition temperature from above. We also study the retarded two-point function of tr[F ^ F] with non-zero frequency and momentum. Our results suggest that the CP-odd phenomena that may potentially occur in heavy ion collisions could be controlled by an excitation with energy on the order of the lightest axial glueball mass.

The discontinuities of conformal transitions and mass spectra of V-QCD

Zero temperature spectra of mesons and glueballs are analyzed in a class of holographic bottom-up models for QCD in the Veneziano limit, N_c -> infinity, N_f -> infinity, with x = N_f/N_c fixed (V-QCD). The backreaction of flavor on color is fully included. It is found that spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, for x below the critical value x_c where the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the walking region x -> x_c^- due to Miransky scaling. All the ratios of masses asymptote to non-zero constants as x -> x_c^- and therefore there is no "dilaton" in the spectrum. The S-parameter is computed and found to be of O(1) in units of N_f N_c in the walking regime, while it is always an increasing function of x. This indicates the presence of a subtle discontinuity of correlation functions across the conformal transition at x = x_c.

Heavy quarks in a magnetic field

The motion of a heavy charged quark in a magnetic field is analyzed in the vacuum of strongly coupled CFT. The motion of the quark is dissipative. It moves in spiral until it eventually comes to rest. The world-sheet geometry is locally AdS_2 but has a time dependent horizon. The string profile in the static gauge extends from the boundary till a point where an embedding singularity exists. Connections with other circular string motions are established.

Holographic quantum criticality and strange metal transport

A holographic model of a quantum critical theory at a finite but low temperature, and finite density is studied. The model exhibits non-relativistic z=2 Schrödinger symmetry and is realized by the Anti-de-Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole in light-cone coordinates. Our approach addresses the electrical conductivities in the presence or absence of an applied magnetic field and contains a control parameter that can be associated to quantum tuning via charge carrier doping or an external field in correlated electron systems. The Ohmic resistivity, the inverse Hall angle, the Hall coefficient and the magnetoresistance are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results of strange metals at very low temperature. The holographic model also predicts new scaling relations in the presence of a magnetic field.

Lorentz violation, Gravity, Dissipation and Holography

We reconsider Lorentz Violation (LV) at the fundamental level. We show that Lorentz Violation is intimately connected with gravity and that LV couplings in QFT must always be fields in a gravitational sector. Diffeomorphism invariance must be intact and the LV couplings transform as tensors under coordinate/frame changes. Therefore searching for LV is one of the most sensitive ways of looking for new physics, either new interactions or modifications of known ones. Energy dissipation/Cerenkov radiation is shown to be a generic feature of LV in QFT. A general computation is done in strongly coupled theories with gravity duals. It is shown that in scale invariant regimes, the energy dissipation rate depends non-triviallly on two characteristic exponents, the Lifshitz exponent and the hyperscaling violation exponent.

The holographic quantum effective potential at finite temperature and density

We develop a formalism that allows the computation of the quantum effective potential of a scalar order parameter in a class of holographic theories at finite temperature and charge density. The effective potential is a valuable tool for studying the ground state of the theory, symmetry breaking patterns and phase transitions. We derive general formulae for the effective potential and apply them to determine the phase transition temperature and density in the scaling region.

V-QCD: Spectra, the dilaton and the S-parameter

Zero temperature spectra of mesons and glueballs are analyzed in a class of holographic bottom-up models for QCD (named V-QCD), as a function of x = N_f/N_c with the full back-reaction included. It is found that spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, for x below the critical value x_c where the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the walking region x -> x_c due to Miransky scaling. The ratio of masses all asymptote to non-zero constants as x -> x_c and therefore there is no "dilaton" in the spectrum. The S-parameter is computed and found to be of O(1) in the walking regime.

Dressed spectral densities for heavy quark diffusion in holographic plasmas

We analyze the large frequency behavior of the spectral densities that govern the generalized Langevin diffusion process for a heavy quark in the context of the gauge/gravity duality. The bare Langevin correlators obtained from the trailing string solution have a singular short-distance behavior. We argue that the proper dressed spectral functions are obtained by subtracting the zero-temperature correlators. The dressed spectral functions have a sufficiently fast fall-off at large frequency so that the Langevin process is well defined and the dispersion relations are satisfied. We identify the cases in which the subtraction does not modify the associated low-frequency transport coefficients. These include conformal theories and the non-conformal, non-confining models. We provide several analytic and numerical examples in conformal and non-conformal holographic backgrounds.

Holographic bulk viscosity: GPR vs EO

Recently Eling and Oz (EO) proposed a formula for the holographic bulk viscosity, in arXiv:1103.1657, derived from the null horizon focusing equation. This formula seems different from that obtained earlier by Gubser, Pufu and Rocha (GPR) in arXiv:0806.0407 calculated from the IR limit of the two-point function of the trace of the stress tensor. The two were shown to agree only for some simple scaling cases. We point out that the two formulae agree in two non-trivial holographic theories describing RG flows. The first is the strongly coupled N=2* gauge theory plasma. The second is the semi-phenomenological model of Improved Holographic QCD.

Holographic Models for QCD in the Veneziano Limit

We construct a class of bottom-up holographic models with physics comparable to the one expected from QCD in the Veneziano limit of large N_f and N_c with fixed x = N_f/N_c. The models capture the holographic dynamics of the dilaton (dual to the YM coupling) and a tachyon (dual to the chiral condensate), and are parametrized by the real parameter x, which can take values within the range 0 <= x < 11/2. We analyze the saddle point solutions, and draw the phase diagram at zero temperature and density. The backreaction of flavor on the glue is fully included. We find the conformal window for x >= x_c, and the QCD-like phase with chiral symmetry breaking at x < x_c, where the critical value x_c lies close to four. We also find Miransky scaling as x -> x_c as well as Efimov-like saddle points. By calculating the holographic beta-functions, we demonstrate the "walking" behavior of the coupling in the region near and below x_c.

Josephson Junctions and AdS/CFT Networks

We propose a new holographic model of Josephson junctions (and networks thereof) based on designer multi-gravity, namely multi-(super)gravity theories on products of distinct asymptotically AdS spacetimes coupled by mixed boundary conditions. We present a simple model of a Josephson junction (JJ) that exhibits the well-known current-phase sine relation of JJs. In one-dimensional chains of holographic superconductors we find that the Cooper-pair condensates are described by a discretized Schrodinger-type equation. Such non-integrable equations, which have been studied extensively in the past in condensed matter and optics applications, are known to exhibit complex behavior that includes periodic and quasiperiodic solutions, chaotic dynamics, soliton and kink solutions. In our setup these solutions translate to holographic configurations of strongly-coupled superconductors in networks with weak site-to-site interactions that exhibit interesting patterns of modulated superconductivity. In a continuum limit our equations reduce to generalizations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We comment on the many possible extensions and applications of this new approach.

Mini-Black-Hole production at RHIC and LHC

We argue that heavy-ion collisions provide the best testing ground for mini-black hole physics as $M_P\simeq 4 GeV$ for the gravity dual of YM and give concrete evidence for a new extra dimension, that is visible only to the strong interactions. We analyse the process of production evolution and decay of the mini-black-holes by using recent results on gravity duals of YM. There are several novelties compared with the traditional story of black hole evaporation, including Bjorken scaling instead of sphericity, evaporation via bubble nucleation instead of the Hawking mechanism and lepton-poor final states. Multiplicities are estimated using shock-wave scattering techniques. It is argued that high-multiplicity/high energy pp collisions will also show similar characteristics of mini-black-hole production and decay.

Multiplicities from black-hole formation in heavy-ion collisions

The formation of trapped surfaces in the head-on collision of shock waves in conformal and non-conformal backgrounds is investigated. The backgrounds in- clude all interesting confining and non-confining backgrounds that may be relevant for QCD. Several transverse profiles of the shocks are investigated including distributions that fall-off as powers or exponentials. Different ways of cutting-off the UV contributions (that are expected to be perturbative in QCD) are explored. Under some plausible simplifying assumptions our estimates are converted into predictions for multiplicities for heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Vector-axial vector correlators in weak electric field and the holographic dynamics of the chiral condensate

The transverse part of the vector-axial vector flavor current correlator in the presence of weak external electric field is studied using holography. The correlator is calculated using a bottom-up model arxiv:1003.2377 {proposed recently}, that includes the non-linear dynamics of the chiral condensate. It is shown that for low momenta the result agrees with the relation proposed by arXiv:1010.0718 {Son and Yamamoto} motivated by a simpler holographic model. For large Euclidean momenta however, the two results diverge. In the process, the difference of the vector and axial vector two point functions is also calculated. At large Euclidean momenta it is found that the first non-perturbative contribution, decreases as $q^{-6}$ as expected from QCD.

An AdS/QCD model from Sen's tachyon action

We construct a new, simple phenomenological model along the lines of AdS/QCD. The essential new ingredient is the brane-antibrane effective action including the open string tachyon proposed by Sen. Chiral symmetry breaking happens because of tachyon dynamics. We fit a large number of low-spin meson masses at the 10%-15% level. The only free parameters involved in the fits correspond to the overall QCD-scale and the quark masses. Several aspects of previous models are qualitatively improved.

An AdS/QCD model from tachyon condensation: II

A simple holographic model is presented and analyzed that describes chiral symmetry breaking and the physics of the meson sector in QCD. This is a bottom-up model that incorporates string theory ingredients like tachyon condensation which is expected to be the main manifestation of chiral symmetry breaking in the holographic context. As a model for glue the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein background is used. The structure of the flavor vacuum is analyzed in the quenched approximation. Chiral symmetry breaking is shown at zero temperature. Above the deconfinement transition chiral symmetry is restored. A complete holographic renormalization is performed and the chiral condensate is calculated for different quark masses both at zero and non-zero temperatures. The 0^{++},0^{-+},1^{++},1^{--} meson trajectories are analyzed and their masses and decay constants are computed. The asymptotic trajectories are linear. The model has one phenomenological parameter beyond those of QCD that affects the 1^{++},0^{-+} sectors. Fitting this parameter we obtain very good agreement with data. The model improves in several ways the popular hard-wall and soft wall bottom-up models.

Improved Holographic QCD

We provide a review to holographic models based on Einstein-dilaton gravity with a potential in 5 dimensions. Such theories, for a judicious choice of potential are very close to the physics of large-N YM theory both at zero and finite temperature. The zero temperature glueball spectra as well as their finite temperature thermodynamic functions compare well with lattice data. The model can be used to calculate transport coefficients, like bulk viscosity, the drag force and jet quenching parameters, relevant for the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma.

On $R^4$ threshold corrections in IIB string theory and (p,q) string instantons

We obtain the exact non-perturbative thresholds of $R^4$ terms in IIB string theory compactified to eight and seven dimensions. These thresholds are given by the perturbative tree-level and one-loop results together with the contribution of the D-instantons and of the (p,q)-string instantons. The invariance under U-duality is made manifest by rewriting the sum as a non-holomorphic modular function of the corresponding discrete U-duality group. In the eight-dimensional case, the threshold is the sum of a order-1 Eisenstein series for SL(2,Z) and a order-3/2 Eisenstein series for SL(3,Z). The seven-dimensional result is given by the order-3/2 Eisenstein series for SL(5,Z). We also conjecture formulae for the non-perturbative thresholds in lower dimensional compactifications and discuss the relation with M-theory.

Spherically symmetric solutions in modified Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We find spherically symmetric solutions in the modified Hořava-Lifshitz gravity proposed recently by Blas, Pujolas and Sibiryakov. The non-linear equations of the two derivative action turn out to be similar to those stemming from the four-derivative action explored recently. We analyze the solutions and derive constraints on the relevant new coupling constant. We also analyze the case where the cosmological constant is non-zero. We derive the large distance expansion of solutions and show that the power of the standard Newton's law is modified in the presence of a cosmological constant.

Thermal Transport and Drag Force in Improved Holographic QCD

We calculate the bulk viscosity, drag force and jet quenching parameter in Improved Holographic QCD. We find that the bulk viscosity rises near the phase transition but does not exceed the shear viscosity. The drag force shows the effects of asymptotic freedom both as a function of velocity and temperature. It indicates diffusion times of heavy quarks in rough agreement with data. The jet quenching parameter values computed via the light-like Wilson loop are in the lower range suggested by data.

On Horava-Lifshitz "Black Holes"

The most general spherically symmetric solution with zero shift is found in the non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz class of theories with general coupling constants. It contains as special cases, spherically symmetric solutions found by other authors earlier. It is found that the generic solution has conventional (AdS, dS or flat) asymptotics with a universal 1/r tail. There are several special cases where the asymptotics differ, including the detailed balance choice of couplings. The conventional thermodynamics of this general class of solutions is established by calculating the energy, temperature and entropy. Although several of the solutions have conventional horizons, for particles with ultra-luminal dispersion relations such solutions appear to be horizonless.

SU(5) orientifolds, Yukawa couplings, Stringy Instantons and Proton Decay

We construct a large class of SU(5) orientifold vacua with tadpole cancellation both for the standard and the flipped case. We give a general analysis of superpotential couplings up to quartic order in orientifold vacua and identify the properties of needed Yukawa couplings as well as the baryon number violating couplings. We point out that successful generation of the perturbatively forbidden Yukawa couplings entails a generically disastrous rate for proton decay from an associated quartic term in the superpotential, generated from the same instanton effects. We search for the appropriate instanton effects that generate the missing Yukawa couplings in the SU(5) vacua we constructed and find them in a small subset of them.

(Multi)Matrix Models and Interacting Clones of Liouville Gravity

Large-N matrix models coupled via multitrace operators are used to define, via appropriate double-scaling limits, solvable models of interacting multi-string theories. It is shown that although such theories are non-local at the world-sheet level they have a simple description of the spacetime physics. Such theories share the main characteristics of similarly coupled higher-dimensional CFTs. An interpretation has been given in the past of similar continuum limits in terms of Liouville interactions that violate the Seiberg bound. We provide a novel interpretation of this relation which agrees with the current understanding of Liouville theory and analogous observations in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

On massless 4D Gravitons from 5D Asymptotically AdS Space-times

We investigate the conditions for obtaining four-dimensional massless spin-2 states in the spectrum of fluctuations around an asymptotically $AdS_5$ solution of Einstein-Dilaton gravity. We find it is only possible to have normalizable massless spin-2 modes if the space-time terminates at some IR point in the extra dimension, far from the UV AdS boundary, and if suitable boundary conditions are imposed at the ``end of space.'' In some of these cases the 4D spectrum consists only of a massless spin-2 graviton, with no additional massless or light scalar or vector modes. These spin-2 modes have a profile wave-function peaked in the interior of the 5D bulk space-time. Under the holographic duality, they may be sometimes interpreted as arising purely from the IR dynamics of a strongly coupled QFT living on the AdS boundary.

On the Effective Theory of Low Scale Orientifold String Vacua

The effective field theory of the minimal Low Scale Orientifold Models is developed. It describes universal features of related orientifold vacua in string theory. It contains, beyond the Standard Model fields, an MSSM-like Higgs sector and three anomalous (massive) U(1) gauge bosons. All renormalizable couplings are included as well as some dimension-five couplings that are important for anomaly cancellation. The Higgs symmetry breaking induces mixing between the anomalous U(1) gauge bosons and the photon and $Z^0$. This mixing as well as the anomaly generated cubic vector boson couplings is potentially important for discriminating such models from other theories containing Z's. Some interesting tree-level processes are also evaluated.

D-branes in Standard Model building, Gravity and Cosmology

D-branes are by now an integral part of our toolbox towards understanding nature. In this review we will describe recent progress in their use to realize fundamental interactions. The realization of the Standard Model and relevant physics and problems will be detailed. New ideas on realizing 4-dimensional gravity use the brane idea in an important way. Such approaches will be reviewed and compared to the standard paradigm of compactification. Branes can play a pivotal role both in early- and late-universe cosmology mainly via the brane-universe paradigm. Brane realizations of various cosmological ideas (early inflation, sources for dark matter and dark energy, massive gravity etc) will be also reviewed.

String interactions in gravitational wave backgrounds

The non-compact CFT of a class of NS-supported pp-wave backgrounds is solved exactly. The associated tree-level covariant string scattering amplitudes are calculated. The S-matrix elements are well-defined, dual but not analytic as a function of $p^+$. They have poles corresponding to physical intermediate states with $p^+\not =0$ and logarithmic branch cuts due to on-shell exchange of spectral-flow images of $p^+=0$ states. When $μ\to 0$ a smooth flat space limit is obtained. The $μ\to\infty$ limit, unlike the case of RR-supported pp-waves, gives again a flat space theory.

Infrared-Regulated String Theory and Loop Corrections to Coupling Constants

Exact superstring solutions are constructed in 4-D space-time, with positive curvature and non-trivial dilaton and antisymmetric tensor fields. The full spectrum of string excitations is derived as a function of moduli fields $T^{i}$ and the scale $μ^2=1/(k+2)$ which is induced by the non-zero background fields. The spectrum of string excitations has a non-zero mass gap $μ^2$ and in the weak curvature limit ($μ$ small) $μ^2$ plays the role of a well defined infrared regulator, consistent with modular invariance, gauge invariance, supersymmetry and chirality. The effects of a covariantly constant (chomo)magnetic field $H$ as well as additional curvature can be derived exactly up to one string-loop level. Thus, the one-loop corrections to all couplings (gravitational, gauge and Yukawas) are unambiguously computed and are finite both in the UltraViolet and the InfraRed regime. These corrections are necessary for quantitative string superunification predictions at low energies. The one-loop corrections to the couplings are also found to satisfy Infrared Flow Equations. Having in our disposal an exact description which goes beyond the leading order in the $α'$-expansion or the linearized approximation in the magnetic field, we find interesting clues about the physics of string theory in strong gravitational and magnetic fields. In particular, the nature of gravitational or magnetic instabilities is studied.

One Loop Corrections to Coupling Constants in IR-regulated String Theory

Exact Superstring solutions are constructed moving in 4-D space-time with positive curvature and non-trivial dilaton and antisymmetric tensor fields. The full spectrum of string excitations is derived as a function of moduli fields $T^{i}$ and the scale $μ^2=1/(k+2)$ which induced by the non-zero background fields. The spectrum of string excitations has a non-zero mass gap $μ^2$ and in the weak curvature limit ($μ$ small) $μ^2$ plays the role of a well defined infrared regulator, consistent with modular invariance, gauge invariance, supersymmetry and chirality. The effects of a covariantly constant chomo-magnetic field $B$ as well as additional curvature can be derived exactly up to one string-loop level. Thus, the one-loop corrections to all couplings (gravitational, gauge and Yukawas) are unambiguously computed and are finite both in the Ultra-Violet and the Infra-Red regime. These corrections are necessary for quantitative string superunification predictions at low energies. Similar calculations are done in the effective field theory. The one-loop corrections to the couplings are also found to satisfy Infrared Flow Equations.
