Depth-resolved Laue microdiffraction with coded-apertures

We introduce a rapid data acquisition and reconstruction method to image the crystalline structure of materials and associated strain and orientations at micrometer resolution using Laue diffraction. Our method relies on scanning a coded-aperture across the diffracted x-ray beams from a broadband illumination, and a reconstruction algorithm to resolve Laue microdiffraction patterns as a function of depth along the incident illumination path. This method provides a rapid access to full diffraction information at sub-micrometer volume elements in bulk materials. Here we present the theory as well as the experimental validation of this imaging approach.

In situ Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging of corrosion in a Co-Fe alloy microcrystal

Corrosion is a major concern for many industries, as corrosive environments can induce structural and morphological changes that lead to material dissolution and accelerate material failure. The progression of corrosion depends on nanoscale morphology, stress, and defects present. Experimentally monitoring this complex interplay is challenging. Here we implement in situ Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (BCDI) to probe the dissolution of a Co-Fe alloy microcrystal exposed to hydrochloric acid (HCl). By measuring five Bragg reflections from a single isolated microcrystal at ambient conditions, we compare the full three-dimensional (3D) strain state before corrosion and the strain along the [111] direction throughout the corrosion process. We find that the strained surface layer of the crystal dissolves to leave a progressively less strained surface. Interestingly, the average strain closer to the centre of the crystal increases during the corrosion process. We determine the localised corrosion rate from BCDI data, revealing the preferential dissolution of facets more exposed to the acid stream, highlighting an experimental geometry effect. These results bring new perspectives to understanding the interplay between crystal strain, morphology, and corrosion; a prerequisite for the design of more corrosion-resistant materials.

Stability of piezoelectric beams with magnetic effects of fractional derivative type and with/without thermal effects

In this paper, we first consider the well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of a one-dimensional piezoelectric beam system with control boundary conditions of fractional derivative type, which represent magnetic effects on the system. By introducing two new equations to deal with control boundary conditions of fractional derivative type, we obtain a new equivalent system, so as to show the well-posedness of the system by using Lumer-Philips theorem. We then prove the lack of exponential stability by a spectral analysis, and obtain the polynomial stability of the system by using a result of Borichev and Tomilov (Math. Ann. {\bf 347} (2010), 455--478). To find a more stable system, we then consider the stability of the above system with additional thermal effects described by Fourier's law, and achieve the exponential stability for the new model by using the perturbed functional method.

Existence of weak solutions to a generalized nonlinear multi-layered fluid-structure interaction problem with the Navier-slip boundary conditions

We consider a fluid-structure interaction problem with Navier-slip boundary conditions in which the fluid is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the structure is described by a nonlinear multi-layered model. The fluid domain is driven by a nonlinear elastic shell and thus is not fixed. To simplify the problem, we map the moving fluid domain into a fixed domain by applying an arbitrary Lagrange Euler mapping. Unlike the classical method by which we can consider the problem as its entirety, we utilize the time-discretization and split the problem into a fluid subproblem and a structure subproblem by an operator splitting scheme. Since the structure subproblem is nonlinear, Lax-Milgram lemma does not hold. Here we prove the existence and uniqueness by means of the traditional semigroup theory. Noticing that the Non-Newtonian fluid possesses a $ p- $Laplacian structure, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the fluid subproblem by considering the Browder-Minty theorem. With the uniform energy estimates, we deduce the weak and weak* convergence respectively. By a generalized Aubin-Lions-Simon Lemma proposed by Muha and Canić [J. Differential Equations {\bf 266} (2019), 8370--8418], we obtain the strong convergence. Finally, we construct the test functions and pass the approximate weak formulation to the limit as time step goes to zero with the convergence results.

Exponential stabilization for magnetic effected piezoelectric beams with time-varying delay and time-dependent weights

This paper is concerned with system of magnetic effected piezoelectric beams with interior time-varying delay and time-dependent weights, in which the beam is clamped at the two side points subject to a single distributed state feedback controller with a time-varying delay. By combining the semigroup theory with Kato's variable norm technique, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of solution. By imposing appropriate assumptions on the time-varying delay term and time-dependent weights, we introduce suitable perturbed Lyapunov functional to obtain exponential stability estimates.

Gaussian Process-Based Model Predictive Control for Overtaking

This paper proposes a novel framework for addressing the challenge of autonomous overtaking and obstacle avoidance, which incorporates the overtaking path planning into Gaussian Process-based model predictive control (GPMPC). Compared with the conventional control strategies, this approach has two main advantages. Firstly, combining Gaussian Process (GP) regression with a nominal model allows for learning from model mismatch and unmodeled dynamics, which enhances a simple model and delivers significantly better results. Due to the approximation for propagating uncertainties, we can furthermore satisfy the constraints and thereby safety of the vehicle is ensured. Secondly, we convert the geometric relationship between the ego vehicle and other obstacle vehicles into the constraints. Without relying on a higherlevel path planner, this approach substantially reduces the computational burden. In addition, we transform the state constraints under the model predictive control (MPC) framework into a soft constraint and incorporate it as relaxed barrier function into the cost function, which makes the optimizer more efficient. Simulation results reveal the usefulness of the proposed approach.

Prediction of topological superconductivity in 1$T$-TiTe$_2$ under pressure

Topological superconductivity has attracted intensive interest for its ability of hosting Majorana zero mode and implementing in topological quantum computations. Based on the first-principles calculations and the analysis of the effective BdG Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that 1$T$-TiTe$_2$ is a topological metal hosting Dirac cone type of surface states near the Fermi level, and it exhibits a normal-topological-normal superconductivity phase transition as a function of the chemical potential. These results point out a new promising topological superconductor without random dopant, in which the influence of the impurity may be greatly reduced. Furthermore, our calculations also suggest that the transition metal intercalated Ti(Se$_{1-y}$Te$_y$)$_2$ is also a highly possible route to realize TSC and MZMs.

Combining Laue diffraction with Bragg coherent diffraction imaging at 34-ID-C

Measurement modalities in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) rely on finding signal from a single nanoscale crystal object, which satisfies the Bragg condition among a large number of arbitrarily oriented nanocrystals. However, even when the signal from a single Bragg reflection with (hkl) Miller indices is found, the crystallographic axes on the retrieved three-dimensional (3D) image of the crystal remain unknown, and thus, localizing in reciprocal space other Bragg reflections becomes in reality impossible or requires good knowledge of the orientation of the crystal. We report the commissioning of a movable double-bounce Si (111) monochromator at the 34-ID-C end station of the Advanced Photon Source, which aims at delivering multi-reflection BCDI as a standard tool in a single beamline instrument. The new instrument enables this through rapid switching from monochromatic to broadband (pink) beam permitting the use of Laue diffraction to determine crystal orientation. With a proper orientation matrix determined for the lattice, one can measure coherent diffraction near multiple Bragg peaks, thus providing sufficient information to image the full strain tensor in 3D. We discuss the design, concept of operation, the developed procedures for indexing Laue patterns, and automated measuring of Bragg coherent diffraction data from multiple reflections of the same nanocrystal.

Thermocapillary flow transition in an evaporating liquid layer in a heated cylindrical cell

Motived by recent ground-based and microgravity experiments investigating the interfacial dynamics of a volatile liquid (FC-72, $Pr=12.34$) contained in a heated cylindrical cell, we numerically study the thermocapillary-driven flow in such an evaporating liquid layer. Particular attention is given to the prediction of the transition of the axisymmetric flow to fully three-dimensional patterns when the applied temperature increases. The numerical simulations rely on an improved one-sided model of evaporation by including heat and mass transfer through the gas phase via the heat transfer Biot number and the evaporative Biot number. We present the axisymmetric flow characteristics, show the variation of the transition points with these Biot numbers, and more importantly elucidate the twofold role of the latent heat of evaporation in the stability; evaporation not only destabilizes the flow but also stabilizes it, depending upon the place where the evaporation-induced thermal gradients come into play. We also show that buoyancy in the liquid layer has a stabilizing effect, though its effect is insignificant. At high Marangoni numbers, the numerical simulations revealed smaller-scale thermal patterns formed on the surface of a thinner evaporating layer, in qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The present work helps to gain a better understanding of the role of a phase change in the thermocapillary instability of an evaporating liquid layer.

Nano-scale imaging of the full strain tensor of specific dislocations extracted from a bulk sample

Lattice defects play a key role in determining the properties of crystalline materials. Probing the 3D lattice strains that govern their interactions remains a challenge. Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) allows strain to be measured with nano-scale 3D resolution. However, it is currently limited to materials that form micro-crystals. Here we introduce a new technique that allows the manufacture of BCDI samples from bulk materials. Using tungsten as an example, we show that focussed ion beam (FIB) machining can be used to extract, from macroscopic crystals, micron-sized BCDI samples containing specific pre-selected defects. To interpret the experimental data, we develop a new displacement-gradient-based analysis for multi-reflection BCDI. This allows accurate recovery of the full lattice strain tensor from samples containing multiple dislocations. These new capabilities open the door to BCDI as a microscopy tool for studying complex real-world materials.

Coherent X-ray measurements of ion-implantation-induced lattice strains in nano-crystals

Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) milling is a mainstay of nano-scale machining. By manipulating a tightly focussed beam of energetic ions, often gallium (Ga+), FIB can sculpt nanostructures via localised sputtering. This ability to cut solid matter on the nano-scale has revolutionised sample preparation across the life-, earth- and materials sciences. For example FIB is central to microchip prototyping, 3D material analysis, targeted electron microscopy sample extraction and the nanotechnology behind size-dependent material properties. Despite its widespread usage, detailed understanding of the functional consequences of FIB-induced structural damage, intrinsic to the technique, remains elusive. Here, we present nano-scale measurements of three-dimensional, FIB-induced lattice strains, probed using Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (BCDI). We observe that even low gallium ion doses, typical of FIB imaging, cause substantial lattice distortions. At higher doses, extended self-organised defect structures appear, giving rise to stresses far in excess of the bulk yield limit. Combined with detailed numerical calculations, these observations provide fundamental insight into the nature of the damage created and the structural instabilities that lead to a surprisingly inhomogeneous morphology.

Enhanced Superconducting Transition Temperature due to Tetragonal Domains in Two-Dimensionally Doped SrTiO$_3$

Strontium titanate is a low-temperature, non-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor that superconducts to carrier concentrations lower than in any other system and exhibits avoided ferroelectricity at low temperatures. Neither the mechanism of superconductivity in strontium titanate nor the importance of the structure and dielectric properties for the superconductivity are well understood. We studied the effects of twin structure on superconductivity in a 5.5-nm-thick layer of niobium-doped SrTiO$_{3}$ embedded in undoped SrTiO$_{3}$. We used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device susceptometer to image the local diamagnetic response of the sample as a function of temperature. We observed regions that exhibited a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ $\gtrsim$ 10% higher than the temperature at which the sample was fully superconducting. The pattern of these regions varied spatially in a manner characteristic of structural twin domains. Our results emphasize that the anisotropic dielectric properties of SrTiO$_{3}$ are important for its superconductivity, and need to be considered in any theory of the mechanism of the superconductivity.

Heat and momentum transfer for magnetoconvection in a vertical external magnetic field

The scaling theory of Grossmann and Lohse (J. Fluid Mech. 407, 27 (2000)) for the turbulent heat and momentum transfer is extended to the magnetoconvection case in the presence of a (strong) vertical magnetic field. The comparison with existing laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the quasistatic limit allows to restrict the parameter space to very low Prandtl and magnetic Prandtl numbers and thus to reduce the number of unknown parameters in the model. Also included is the Chandrasekhar limit for which the outer magnetic induction field B is large enough such that convective motion is suppressed and heat is transported by diffusion. Our theory identifies four distinct regimes of magnetoconvection which are distinguished by the strength of the outer magnetic field and the level of turbulence in the flow, respectively.

On decay and blow-up of solutions for a singular nonlocal viscoelastic problem with a nonlinear source term

In this paper we consider a singular nonlocal viscoelastic problem with a nonlinear source term and a possible damping term. We proved that if the initial data enter into the stable set, the solution exists globally and decays to zero with a more general rate, and if the initial data enter into the unstable set, the solution with non-positive initial energy as well as positive initial energy blows up in finite time. These are achieved by using the potential well theory, the modified convexity method and the perturbed energy method.

General decay of the solution for a viscoelastic wave equation with a time-varying delay term in the internal feedback

In this paper we consider a viscoelastic wave equation with a time-varying delay term, the coefficient of which is not necessarily positive. By introducing suitable energy and Lyapunov functionals, under suitable assumptions, we establish a general energy decay result from which the exponential and polynomial types of decay are only special cases.

New bounds for the companion of Ostrowski's inequality and applications

In this paper we establish some new bounds for the companion of Ostrowski's inequality for the case when $f'\in L^1[a,b]$, $f"\in L^2[a,b]$ and $f'\in L^2[a,b]$, respectively. We point out that the results in the first and third cases are sharp and that some of these new estimations can be better than the known results. Some applications to composite quadrature rules, and to probability density functions are also given.

Some Ostrowski type inequalities via Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals for h-convex functions

In this paper, some Ostrowski type inequalities via Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals for h-convex functions, which are super-multiplicative or super-additive, are given. These results not only generalize those of Set (2012) and Tunc (2012), but also provide new estimates on these types of Ostrowski inequalities for fractional integrals.

Some Weighted Ostrowski Type Inequalities on Time Scales Involving Combination of Weighted Delta-Integral Means

In this paper we obtain some weighted generalizations of Ostrowski type inequalities on time scales involving combination of weighted Δ-integral means, i.e., a weighted Ostrowski type inequality on time scales involving combination of weighted Δ-integral means, two weighted Ostrowski type inequalities for two functions on time scales, and some weighted perturbed Ostrowski type inequalities on time scales. We also give some other interesting inequalities and recapture some known results as special cases.

A unified generalization of some quadrature rules and error bounds

By introducing a parameter, we give a unified generalization of some quadrature rules, which not only unify the recent results about error bounds for generalized mid-point, trapezoid and Simpson's rules, but also give some new error bounds for other quadrature rules as special cases. Especially, two sharp error inequalities are derived when n is an odd and an even integer, respectively.

Global nonexistence of solutions for the viscoelastic wave equation of Kirchhoff type with high energy

In this paper we consider the viscoelastic wave equation of Kirchhoff type: $$ u_{tt}-M(\|\nabla u\|_{2}^{2})Δu+\int_{0}^{t}g(t-s)Δu(s){\rm d}s+u_{t}=|u|^{p-1}u $$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under some suitable assumptions on $g$ and the initial data, we established a global nonexistence result for certain solutions with arbitrarily high energy.
