Fully Coupled Multiphysics Modelling of Fracture Behaviour in Silicon Particles During Lithiation Delithiation Using the Phase Field Method

In this study, a multiphysics model fully coupling mass transport, deformation, phase field, and fatigue damage was developed to investigate the cracking and fracturing behaviours of Si particles during the single lithiation-delithiation cycle and fatigue damage during multiple cycles. The effects of particle diameter, charge rate, and pre-existing notches on the failure behaviour of Si particles were systematically analysed. The results showed that the increase in charge rate, particle diameter, and pre-existing notch length leads to larger cracking rates and faster fracturing of the particle. Then, a validated contour map of Si particle's fracture behaviours was developed. Additionally, the influence of pre-existing notch length and charge rate on fatigue damage was examined, and it was found that longer pre-existing notch length and larger charge rate can shorten the particle's cyclic life. Finally, to alleviate the particle fracture, nanopores were introduced in the particle, and the influence of porosity on the fracture behaviours was investigated. The results showed that nanopores can reduce expansion, dissipate global tensile stresses and elongate the crack propagation path. The developed computational framework established a predictive relationship between stress diffusion coupling theory and particle-level degradation, guiding future design and manufacturing of failure-resistant Si-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

ECO v1: Towards Event-Centric Opinion Mining

Events are considered as the fundamental building blocks of the world. Mining event-centric opinions can benefit decision making, people communication, and social good. Unfortunately, there is little literature addressing event-centric opinion mining, although which significantly diverges from the well-studied entity-centric opinion mining in connotation, structure, and expression. In this paper, we propose and formulate the task of event-centric opinion mining based on event-argument structure and expression categorizing theory. We also benchmark this task by constructing a pioneer corpus and designing a two-step benchmark framework. Experiment results show that event-centric opinion mining is feasible and challenging, and the proposed task, dataset, and baselines are beneficial for future studies.

Local well-posedness and global existence for the Popowicz system

Popowicz system, as the interacting system of Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, has attracted some attention in recent years. In this paper, we first study the local well-posedness for the cauchy problem of Popowicz system in nonhomogeneous Besov spaces $B^s_{p,r}\times B^s_{p,r}$ with $s> \max\{2, \frac{1}{p}+\frac{3}{2}\}$ or $(s=2, 2\leq p \leq \infty, 1\leq r\leq 2)$. Moreover, a new blow-up criterion and global existence with different initial values are obtained.

Modelling Pre-fatigue, Low-velocity Impact and Fatigue behaviours of Composite Helicopter Tail Structures under Multipoint Coordinated Loading Spectrum

This paper aims to numerically study the pre-fatigue, low-velocity impact (LVI) and fatigue progressive damage behaviours of a full-scale composite helicopter tail structure under multipoint coordinated loading spectrum. First, a fatigue progressive damage model (PDM) incorporating multiaxial fatigue residual strength degradation rule, fatigue failure criteria based on fatigue residual strength concept and sudden stiffness degradation rule was proposed. Then, an LVI progressive damage model for plain-weave (PW) and unidirectional (UD) composites was developed. Moreover, a full-process analysis algorithm with a reasonable damage transfer strategy for pre-fatigue, LVI and fatigue progressive damage analysis was proposed. Finally, a highly computational efficient and accurate full-scale global-local finite element (FE) model of helicopter tail structure was built to predict strain distribution under two flight working conditions, to predict LVI damage under impact loading, and to assess fatigue damage behaviours under multipoint coordinated loading spectrum. The numerical predictions agree well with test results from this work and literature data, indicating that the developed pre-fatigue, LVI, fatigue PDMs and algorithms, as well as the global-local FE modelling based on shell-to-solid coupling, can effectively analyse the impact damage tolerance of full-scale aircraft structures.

The method of solving initial structure by Seidel aberration theory for extreme ultraviolet lithography objective

In this paper, a method for solving the initial structure of an off-axis multi-mirror system applied to extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography using a paraxial ray-tracing algorithm based on Seidel aberration theory is proposed. By tracing the characteristic rays in the reflection system, the height and paraxial angle on each surface can be obtained, then through the relationship between the Seidel aberration coefficient and these parameters, the initial structure with good aberration performance can be solved. We can obtain different initial structures by adding different initial condition constraints. In this paper, we have solved two different initial structures by assigning different optical powers as different initial structures, and on this basis, we have optimized two off-axis six-mirror systems with numerical aperture (NA) of 0.25. Their wavefront aberration RMS value is about 0.04 wavelength, and the absolute distortion is less than 1.2nm, with good imaging quality. We believe that this method can greatly improve the design efficiency and optimization effect of complex multi-mirror systems.

Ghost spintronic THz-emitter-array microscope

Terahertz (THz) wave shows great potential in non-destructive testing, bio detection and cancer imaging. Recent progresses on THz wave near-field probes/apertures enable mechanically raster scanning of an object's surface in the near-field region, while an efficient, non-scanning, non-invasive, deeply sub-diffraction-limited imaging still remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a THz near-field microscopy using a reconfigurable spintronic THz emitter array (STEA) with computational ghost imaging. By illuminating an object with the reconfigurable STEA in near field and computing the correlation measurements, we reconstruct its image with deeply sub-diffraction resolution. By circulating an external magnetic field, the in-line polarization rotation of THz waves is realized, making the fused image contrast polarization-free. The time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of coherent THz pulses further enables to resolve objects at different distances or depths. The demonstrated ghost spintronic THz-emitter-array microscope (GHOSTEAM) is a new imaging tool for THz near-field real-time imaging (with potential of video framerate), especially opening up paradigm-shift opportunities in non-intrusive label-free bioimaging in a broadband frequency range from 0.1 THz to 30 THz (namely 3.3-1000 cm-1).

Unveiling the secrets of the mid-infrared Moon

The Moon's optical characteristics in visible and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) have long been observed with our eyes or with instruments. What the mid-infrared (MIR) Moon looks like is still a mystery. For the first time we present detailed appearance of the MIR Moon observed by a high-resolution geostationary satellite and reveal the essence behind its appearance. The appearance of the MIR Moon is opposite to its normal visible appearance. In addition the MIR Moon shows limb darkening. Both the absolute and the relative brightness distribution of the MIR lunar disk changes with the solar incidence angle. The signatures of the MIR Moon are controlled by both the reflection and emission of the lunar surface. We also show first-ever brightness temperature maps of the lunar disk without needing a mosaic, which better show the temperature variation across the lunar disk. They reveal that the relationship between brightness temperature and solar incidence angle i is cos1/bi, and the power parameter is smaller than the Lambertian temperature model of cos1/4i observed for lunar orbit-based measurements. The slower decrease of the brightness temperature when moving away from the sub-solar point than the Lambertian model is due to topographic effects. The brightness temperature is dominated by albedo and the solar incidence angle and influenced by the topography. Our results indicate that the Moon in the MIR exhibits many interesting phenomena which were previously unknown, and contains abundant information about lunar reflection and thermal emission for future study.

CuMF_SGD: Fast and Scalable Matrix Factorization

Matrix factorization (MF) has been widely used in e.g., recommender systems, topic modeling and word embedding. Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is popular in solving MF problems because it can deal with large data sets and is easy to do incremental learning. We observed that SGD for MF is memory bound. Meanwhile, single-node CPU systems with caching performs well only for small data sets; distributed systems have higher aggregated memory bandwidth but suffer from relatively slow network connection. This observation inspires us to accelerate MF by utilizing GPUs's high memory bandwidth and fast intra-node connection. We present cuMF_SGD, a CUDA-based SGD solution for large-scale MF problems. On a single CPU, we design two workload schedule schemes, i.e., batch-Hogwild! and wavefront-update that fully exploit the massive amount of cores. Especially, batch-Hogwild! as a vectorized version of Hogwild! overcomes the issue of memory discontinuity. We also develop highly-optimized kernels for SGD update, leveraging cache, warp-shuffle instructions and half-precision floats. We also design a partition scheme to utilize multiple GPUs while addressing the well-known convergence issue when parallelizing SGD. On three data sets with only one Maxwell or Pascal GPU, cuMF_SGD runs 3.1X-28.2X as fast compared with state-of-art CPU solutions on 1-64 CPU nodes. Evaluations also show that cuMF_SGD scales well on multiple GPUs in large data sets.

Faster and Cheaper: Parallelizing Large-Scale Matrix Factorization on GPUs

Matrix factorization (MF) is employed by many popular algorithms, e.g., collaborative filtering. The emerging GPU technology, with massively multicore and high intra-chip memory bandwidth but limited memory capacity, presents an opportunity for accelerating MF much further when appropriately exploiting the GPU architectural characteristics. This paper presents cuMF, a CUDA-based matrix factorization library that implements memory-optimized alternate least square (ALS) method to solve very large-scale MF. CuMF uses a variety set of techniques to maximize the performance on either single or multiple GPUs. These techniques include smart access of sparse data leveraging GPU memory hierarchy, using data parallelism in conjunction with model parallelism, minimizing the communication overhead between computing units, and utilizing a novel topology-aware parallel reduction scheme. With only a single machine with four Nvidia GPU cards, cuMF can be 6-10 times as fast, and 33-100 times as cost-efficient, compared with the state-of-art distributed CPU solutions. Moreover, this cuMF can solve the largest matrix factorization problem ever reported yet in current literature, while maintaining impressively good performance.

Sentiment Analysis based on User Tag for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Weibo

With the acceptance of Western culture and science, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has become a controversial issue in China. So, it's important to study the public's sentiment and opinion on TCM. The rapid development of online social network, such as twitter, make it convenient and efficient to sample hundreds of millions of people for the aforementioned sentiment study. To the best of our knowledge, the present work is the first attempt that applies sentiment analysis to the domain of TCM on Sina Weibo (a twitter-like microblogging service in China). In our work, firstly we collect tweets topic about TCM from Sina Weibo, and label the tweets as supporting TCM and opposing TCM automatically based on user tag. Then, a support vector machine classifier has been built to predict the sentiment of TCM tweets without labels. Finally, we present a method to adjust the classifier result. The performance of F-measure attained with our method is 97%.

Photonic simulation of topological excitations in metamaterials

Condensed matter systems with topological order and metamaterials with left-handed chirality have attracted recently extensive interests in the fields of physics and optics. So far the two fields are independent, and there is no work to address their connection. Here we propose to establish the relation between the topological order in condensed matter systems and the chirality in metamaterials, by mapping explicitly Maxwell's equations to the Dirac equation in one dimension. We report an experimental implement of the band inversion in the Dirac equation, which accompanies change of chirality of electromagnetic wave in metamaterials, and the first microwave measurement of topological excitations and topological phases in one dimension. Our finding provides a proof-of-principle example that electromagnetic wave in the metamaterials can be used to simulate the topological order in condensed matter systems and quantum phenomena in relativistic quantum mechanics in a controlled laboratory environment.
