Differential operators on domains with conical points: precise uniform regularity estimates

We study families of strongly elliptic, second order differential operators with singular coefficients on domains with conical points. We obtain uniform estimates on their inverses and on the regularity of the solutions to the associated Poisson problem with mixed boundary conditions. The coefficients and the solutions belong to (suitable) weighted Sobolev spaces. The space of coefficients is a Banach space that contains, in particular, the space of smooth functions. Hence, our results extend classical well-posedness results for strongly elliptic equations in domains with conical points to problems with singular coefficients. We furthermore provide precise uniform estimates on the norms of the solution operators.

Exhausting families of representations and spectra of pseudodifferential operators

Families of representations of suitable Banach algebras provide a powerful tool in the study of the spectral theory of (pseudo)differential operators and of their Fredholmness. We introduce the new concept of an exhausting family of representations of a C*-algebra A. An {\em exhausting family} of representations of a C*-algebra A is a set F of representations of A with the property that every irreducible representation of A is weakly contained in some ϕ\in F. An exhausting family F of representations of A has the property that `"a \in A is invertible if, and if, ϕ(a) is invertible for any ϕ\in F." Consequently, the spectrum of a is given by \Spec(a) = \cup_{ϕ\in F} \Spec(ϕ(a)). In other words, every exhausting family of representations is invertibility sufficient, a concept introduced by Roch in 2003. We prove several properties of exhausting families and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a family of representations to be exhausting. Using results of Ionescu and Williams (2009), we show that the regular representations of amenable, second countable, locally compact groupoids with a Haar system form an exhausting family of representations. If $A$ is a separable C*-algebra, we show that a family F of representations of $A$ is exhausting if, and only if, it is invertibility sufficient. However, this result is not true, in general, for non-separable C*-algebras. With an eye towards applications, we extend our results to the case of unbounded operators. A typical application of our results is to parametric families of differential operators arising in the analysis on manifolds with corners, in which case we recover the fact that a parametric operator F is invertible if, and only if, its Mellin transform is invertible. In view of possible applications, we have tried to make this paper accessible to non-specialists in C*-algebras.

Fredholm criteria for pseudodifferential operators and induced representations of groupoid algebras

We characterize the groupoids for which an operator is Fredholm if, and only if, its principal symbol and all its boundary restrictions are invertible. A groupoid with this property is called {\em Fredholm}. Using results on the Effros-Hahn conjecture, we show that an almost amenable, Hausdorff, second countable groupoid is Fredholm. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. In particular, one can use these results to characterize the Fredholm operators on manifolds with cylindrical and poly-cylindrical ends, on manifolds that are asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, on products of such manifolds, and on many others. Moreover, we show that the desingularization of Lie groupoids preserves the class of Fredholm groupoids.

Heat Kernels, Solvable Lie Groups, and the Mean Reverting SABR Stochastic Volatility Model

We use commutator techniques and calculations in solvable Lie groups to investigate certain evolution Partial Differential Equations (PDEs for short) that arise in the study of stochastic volatility models for pricing contingent claims on risky assets. In particular, by restricting to domains of bounded volatility, we establish the existence of the semi-groups generated by the spatial part of the operators in these models, concentrating on those arising in the so-called "SABR stochastic volatility model with mean reversion." The main goal of this work is to approximate the solutions of the Cauchy problem for the SABR PDE with mean reversion, a parabolic problem the generator of which is denoted by $L$. The fundamental solution for this problem is not known in closed form. We obtain an approximate solution by performing an expansion in the so-called volvol or volatility of the volatility, which leads us to study a degenerate elliptic operator $L_0$, corresponding the the zero-volvol case of the SABR model with mean reversion, to which the classical results do not apply. However, using Lie algebra techniques we are able to derive an exact formula for the solution operator of the PDE $\partial_t u - L_0 u = 0$. We then compare the semi-group generated by $L$--the existence of which does follows from standard arguments--to that generated by $L_0$, thus establishing a perturbation result that is useful for numerical methods for the SABR PDE with mean reversion. In the process, we are led to study semigroups arising from both a strongly parabolic and a hyperbolic problem.

On the Essential Spectrum of N-Body Hamiltonians with Asymptotically Homogeneous Interactions

We determine the essential spectrum of Hamiltonians with N-body type interactions that have radial limits at infinity. This extends the HVZ-theorem, which treats perturbations of the Laplacian by potentials that tend to zero at infinity. Our proof involves $C^*$-algebra techniques that allows one to treat large classes of operators with local singularities and general behavior at infinity. In our case, the configuration space of the system is a finite dimensional, real vector space $X$, and we consider the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{E}(X)$ of functions on $X$ generated by functions of the form $v\circπ_Y$, where $Y$ runs over the set of all linear subspaces of $X$, $π_Y$ is the projection of $X$ onto the quotient $X/Y$, and $v:X/Y\to\mathbb{C}$ is a continuous function that has uniform radial limits at infinity. The group $X$ acts by translations on $\mathcal{E}(X)$, and hence the crossed product $\mathscr{E}(X) := \mathcal{E}(X)\rtimes X$ is well defined; the Hamiltonians that are of interest to us are the self-adjoint operators affiliated to it. We determine the characters of $\mathcal{E}(X)$. This then allows us to describe the quotient of $\mathscr{E}(X)$ with respect to the ideal of compact operators, which in turn gives a formula for the essential spectrum of any self-adjoint operator affiliated to $\mathscr(X)$.

The periodic cyclic homology of crossed products of finite type algebras

We study the periodic cyclic homology groups of the cross-product of a finite type algebra $A$ by a discrete group $Γ$. In case $A$ is commutative and $Γ$ is finite, our results are complete and given in terms of the singular cohomology of the strata of fixed points. These groups identify our cyclic homology groups with the \dlp orbifold cohomology\drp\ of the underlying (algebraic) orbifold. The proof is based on a careful study of localization at fixed points and of the resulting Koszul complexes. We provide examples of Azumaya algebras for which this identification is, however, no longer valid. As an example, we discuss some affine Weyl groups.

Analysis on singular spaces: Lie manifolds and operator algebras

We discuss and develop some connections between analysis on singular spaces and operator algebras, as presented in my sequence of four lectures at the conference "Noncommutative geometry and applications," Frascati, Italy, June 16-21, 2014. Therefore this paper is mostly a survey paper, but the presentation is new, and there are included some new results as well. In particular, Sections 3 and 4 provide a complete short introduction to analysis on noncompact manifolds that is geared towards a class of manifolds--called "Lie manifolds"--that often appears in practice. Our interest in Lie manifolds is due to the fact that they provide the link between analysis on singular spaces and operator algebras. The groupoids integrating Lie manifolds play an important background role in establishing this link because they provide operator algebras whose structure is often well understood. The initial motivation for the work surveyed here--work that spans over close to two decades--was to develop the index theory of stratified singular spaces. Meanwhile, several other applications have emerged as well, including applications to Partial Differential Equations and Numerical Methods. These will be mentioned only briefly, however, due to the lack of space. Instead, we shall concentrate on the applications to Index theory.

Desingularization of Lie groupoids and pseudodifferential operators on singular spaces

We introduce and study a "desingularization" of a Lie groupoid $G$ along an "$A(G)$-tame" submanifold $L$ of the space of units $M$. An $A(G)$-tame submanifold $L \subset M$ is one that has, by definition, a tubular neighborhood on which $A(G)$ becomes a thick pull-back Lie algebroid. The construction of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ of $G$ along $L$ is based on a canonical fibered pull-back groupoid structure result for $G$ in a neighborhood of the tame $A(G)$-submanifold $L \subset M$. This local structure result is obtained by integrating a certain groupoid morphism, using results of Moerdijk and Mrcun (Amer. J. Math. 2002). Locally, the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ is defined using a construction of Debord and Skandalis (Advances in Math., 2014). The space of units of the desingularization $[[G:L]]$ is $[M:L]$, the blow up of $M$ along $L$. The space of units and the desingularization groupoid $[[G:L]]$ are constructed using a gluing construction of Gualtieri and Li (IMRN 2014). We provide an explicit description of the structure of the desingularized groupoid and we identify its Lie algebroid, which is important in analysis applications. We also discuss a variant of our construction that is useful for analysis on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We conclude with an example relating our constructions to the so called "edge pseudodifferential calculus." The paper is written such that it also provides an introduction to Lie groupoids designed for applications to analysis on singular spaces.

Regularity for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators

We prove a regularity result in weighted Sobolev spaces (or Babuska--Kondratiev spaces) for the eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator. More precisely, let K_{a}^{m}(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) be the weighted Sobolev space obtained by blowing up the set of singular points of the Coulomb type potential V(x) = \sum_{1 \le j \le N} \frac{b_j}{|x_j|} + \sum_{1 \le i < j \le N} \frac{c_{ij}}{|x_i-x_j|}, x in \mathbb{R}^{3N}, b_j, c_{ij} in \mathbb{R}. If u in L^2(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) satisfies (-Δ+ V) u = λu in distribution sense, then u belongs to K_{a}^{m} for all m \in \mathbb{Z}_+ and all a \le 0. Our result extends to the case when b_j and c_{ij} are suitable bounded functions on the blown-up space. In the single-electron, multi-nuclei case, we obtain the same result for all a<3/2.

Weighted Sobolev spaces and regularity for polyhedral domains

We prove a regularity result for the Poisson problem $-Δu = f$, $u |\_{\pa \PP} = g$ on a polyhedral domain $\PP \subset \RR^3$ using the \BK\ spaces $\Kond{m}{a}(\PP)$. These are weighted Sobolev spaces in which the weight is given by the distance to the set of edges \cite{Babu70, Kondratiev67}. In particular, we show that there is no loss of $\Kond{m}{a}$--regularity for solutions of strongly elliptic systems with smooth coefficients. We also establish a "trace theorem" for the restriction to the boundary of the functions in $\Kond{m}{a}(\PP)$.

On the Essential Spectrum of N-Body Systems with Asymptotically Homogeneous of Order Zero Interactions

We overview some of our recent results on the essential spectrum of N-body Hamiltonians with potentials defined by functions that have radial limits at infinity. The results extend the HVZ theorem which describes the essential spectrum of usual N-body Hamiltonians. The proof is based on a careful study of algebras generated by potentials and their cross-products. We also describe the topology on the spectrum of these algebras, thus extending to our setting a result of A. Mageira. Our techniques apply to more general classes of potentials associated to translation invariant algebras of bounded uniformly continuous functions on a finite dimensional vector space.

Analysis of Schrödinger operators with inverse square potentials {II}: FEM and approximation of eigenfunctions in the periodic case

Let $V$ be a {\em periodic} potential on $\RR^3$ that is smooth everywhere except at a discrete set $\maS$ of points, where it has singularities of the form $Z/ρ^2$, with $ρ(x) = |x - p|$ for $x$ close to $p$ and $Z$ is continuous, $Z(p) > -1/4$ for $p \in \maS$. We also assume that $ρ$ and $Z$ are smooth outside $\maS$ and $Z$ is smooth in polar coordinates around each singular point. Let us denote by $Λ$ the periodicity lattice and set $\TT := \RR^3/ Λ$. In the first paper of this series \cite{HLNU1}, we obtained regularity results in weighted Sobolev space for the eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger-type operator $H = -Δ+ V$ acting on $L^2(\TT)$, as well as for the induced $\vt k$--Hamiltonians $\Hk$ obtained by resticting the action of $H$ to Bloch waves. In this paper we present two related applications: one to the Finite Element approximation of the solution of $(L+\Hk) v = f$ and one to the numerical approximation of the eigenvalues, $λ$, and eigenfunctions, $u$, of $\Hk$. We give optimal, higher order convergence results for approximation spaces defined piecewise polynomials. Our numerical tests are in good agreement with the theoretical results.

Analysis of Schrödinger operators with inverse square potentials I: regularity results in 3D

Let $V$ be a potential on $\RR^3$ that is smooth everywhere except at a discrete set $\maS$ of points, where it has singularities of the form $Z/ρ^2$, with $ρ(x) = |x - p|$ for $x$ close to $p$ and $Z$ continuous on $\RR^3$ with $Z(p) > -1/4$ for $p \in \maS$. Also assume that $ρ$ and $Z$ are smooth outside $\maS$ and $Z$ is smooth in polar coordinates around each singular point. We either assume that $V$ is periodic or that the set $\maS$ is finite and $V$ extends to a smooth function on the radial compactification of $\RR^3$ that is bounded outside a compact set containing $\maS$. In the periodic case, we let $Λ$ be the periodicity lattice and define $\TT := \RR^3/ Λ$. We obtain regularity results in weighted Sobolev space for the eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger-type operator $H = -Δ+ V$ acting on $L^2(\TT)$, as well as for the induced $\vt k$--Hamiltonians $\Hk$ obtained by restricting the action of $H$ to Bloch waves. Under some additional assumptions, we extend these regularity and solvability results to the non-periodic case. We sketch some applications to approximation of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues that will be studied in more detail in a second paper.

Anisotropic regularity and optimal rates of convergence for the Finite Element Method on three dimensional polyhedral domains

We consider the model Poisson problem $-Δu = f \in Ω$, $u = g$ on $\pa Ω$, where $ Ω$ is a bounded polyhedral domain in $\RR^n$. The objective of the paper is twofold. The first objective is to review the well posedness and the regularity of our model problem using appropriate weighted spaces for the data and the solution. We use these results to derive the domain of the Laplace operator with zero boundary conditions on a concave domain, which seems not to have been fully investigated before. We also mention some extensions of our results to interface problems for the Elasticity equation. The second objective is to illustrate how anisotropic weighted regularity results for the Laplace operator in 3D are used in designing efficient finite element discretizations of elliptic boundary value problems, with the focus on the efficient discretization of the Poisson problem on polyhedral domains in $\RR^3$, following {\em Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim.}, 28(7-8):775--824, 2007. The anisotropic weighted regularity results described and used in the second part of the paper are a consequence of the well-posedness results in (isotropically) weighted Sobolev spaces described in the first part of the paper. The paper is based on the talk by the last named author at the Congress of Romanian Mathematicians, Brasov 2011, and is largely a survey paper.

Uniform shift estimates for transmission problems and optimal rates of convergence for the parametric Finite Element Method

Let $Ω\subset \RR^d$, $d \geqslant 1$, be a bounded domain with piecewise smooth boundary $\partial Ω$ and let $U$ be an open subset of a Banach space $Y$. Motivated by questions in "Uncertainty Quantification," we consider a parametric family $P = (P_y)_{y \in U}$ of uniformly strongly elliptic, second order partial differential operators $P_y$ on $Ω$. We allow jump discontinuities in the coefficients. We establish a regularity result for the solution $u: Ω\times U \to \RR$ of the parametric, elliptic boundary value/transmission problem $P_y u_y = f_y$, $y \in U$, with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions in the case when the boundary and the interface are smooth and in the general case for $d=2$. Our regularity and well-posedness results are formulated in a scale of broken weighted Sobolev spaces $\hat\maK^{m+1}_{a+1}(Ω)$ of Babuška-Kondrat'ev type in $Ω$, possibly augmented by some locally constant functions. This implies that the parametric, elliptic PDEs $(P_y)_{y \in U}$ admit a shift theorem that is uniform in the parameter $y\in U$. In turn, this then leads to $h^m$-quasi-optimal rates of convergence (i.e. algebraic orders of convergence) for the Galerkin approximations of the solution $u$, where the approximation spaces are defined using the "polynomial chaos expansion" of $u$ with respect to a suitable family of tensorized Lagrange polynomials, following the method developed by Cohen, Devore, and Schwab (2010).

An index formula for perturbed Dirac operators on Lie manifolds

We give an index formula for a class of Dirac operators coupled with unbounded potentials. More precisely, we study operators of the form P := D+ V, where D is a Dirac operators and V is an unbounded potential at infinity on a possibly non-compact manifold M_0. We assume that M_0 is a Lie manifold with compactification denoted M. Examples of Lie manifolds are provided by asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. The potential V is required to be invertible outside a compact set K and V^{-1} extends to a smooth function on M\K that vanishes on all faces of M in a controlled way. Using tools from analysis on non-compact Riemannian manifolds, we show that the computation of the index of P reduces to the computation of the index of an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of order zero on M_0 that is a multiplication operator at infinity. The index formula for P can then be obtained from earlier results. The proof also yields similar index formulas for Callias-type pseudodifferential operators coupled with bounded potentials that are invertible at infinity on asymptotically commutative Lie manifolds, a class of manifolds that includes the scattering and double-edge calculi.

Closed form asymptotics for local volatility models

We obtain new closed-form pricing formulas for contingent claims when the asset follows a Dupire-type local volatility model. To obtain the formulas we use the Dyson-Taylor commutator method that we have recently developed in [5, 6, 8] for short-time asymptotic expansions of heat kernels, and obtain a family of general closed-form approximate solutions for both the pricing kernel and derivative price. A bootstrap scheme allows us to extend our method to large time. We also perform analytic as well as a numerical error analysis, and compare our results to other known methods.

The $K$-groups and the index theory of certain comparison $C^*$-algebras

We compute the $K$-theory of comparison $C^*$-algebra associated to a manifold with corners. These comparison algebras are an example of the abstract pseudodifferential algebras introduced by Connes and Moscovici \cite{M3}. Our calculation is obtained by showing that the comparison algebras are a homomorphic image of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra. We then prove an index theorem with values in the $K$-theory groups of the comparison algebra.

Approximate Solutions to Second Order Parabolic Equations I: analytic estimates

We establish a new type of local asymptotic formula for the Green's function ${\mathcal G}_t(x,y)$ of a uniformly parabolic linear operator $\partial_t - L$ with non-constant coefficients using dilations and Taylor expansions at a point $z=z(x,y)$, for a function $z$ with bounded derivatives such that $z(x,x)=x \in {\mathbb R}^N$. For $z(x,y) =x$, we recover the known, classical expansion obtained via pseudo-differential calculus. Our method is based on dilation at $z$, Dyson and Taylor series expansions, and the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff commutator formula. Our procedure leads to an elementary, algorithmic construction of approximate solutions to parabolic equations which are accurate to arbitrary prescribed order in the short-time limit. We establish mapping properties and precise error estimates in the exponentially weighted, $L^{p}$-type Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}_a({\mathbb R}^N)$ that appear in practice.

Groupoids and an index theorem for conical pseudo-manifolds

We define an analytical index map and a topological index map for conical pseudomanifolds. These constructions generalize the analogous constructions used by Atiyah and Singer in the proof of their topological index theorem for a smooth, compact manifold $M$. A main ingredient is a non-commutative algebra that plays in our setting the role of $C_0(T^*M)$. We prove a Thom isomorphism between non-commutative algebras which gives a new example of wrong way functoriality in $K$-theory. We then give a new proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem using deformation groupoids and show how it generalizes to conical pseudomanifolds. We thus prove a topological index theorem for conical pseudomanifolds.
