Global existence for the two-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with advection

We study the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (KSE) in scalar form on the two-dimensional torus with and without advection by an incompressible vector field. We prove local existence of mild solutions for arbitrary data in L2. We then study the issue of global existence. We prove global existence for the KSE in the presence of advection for arbitrary data, provided the advecting velocity field v satisfies certain conditions that ensure the dissipation time of the associated hyperdiffusion-advection equation is sufficiently small. In the absence of advection, global existence can be shown only if the linearized operator does not admit any growing mode and for sufficiently small initial data.

Heat Kernels, Solvable Lie Groups, and the Mean Reverting SABR Stochastic Volatility Model

We use commutator techniques and calculations in solvable Lie groups to investigate certain evolution Partial Differential Equations (PDEs for short) that arise in the study of stochastic volatility models for pricing contingent claims on risky assets. In particular, by restricting to domains of bounded volatility, we establish the existence of the semi-groups generated by the spatial part of the operators in these models, concentrating on those arising in the so-called "SABR stochastic volatility model with mean reversion." The main goal of this work is to approximate the solutions of the Cauchy problem for the SABR PDE with mean reversion, a parabolic problem the generator of which is denoted by $L$. The fundamental solution for this problem is not known in closed form. We obtain an approximate solution by performing an expansion in the so-called volvol or volatility of the volatility, which leads us to study a degenerate elliptic operator $L_0$, corresponding the the zero-volvol case of the SABR model with mean reversion, to which the classical results do not apply. However, using Lie algebra techniques we are able to derive an exact formula for the solution operator of the PDE $\partial_t u - L_0 u = 0$. We then compare the semi-group generated by $L$--the existence of which does follows from standard arguments--to that generated by $L_0$, thus establishing a perturbation result that is useful for numerical methods for the SABR PDE with mean reversion. In the process, we are led to study semigroups arising from both a strongly parabolic and a hyperbolic problem.

Exponential self-similar mixing and loss of regularity for continuity equations

We consider the mixing behaviour of the solutions of the continuity equation associated with a divergence-free velocity field. In this announcement we sketch two explicit examples of exponential decay of the mixing scale of the solution, in case of Sobolev velocity fields, thus showing the optimality of known lower bounds. We also describe how to use such examples to construct solutions to the continuity equation with Sobolev but non-Lipschitz velocity field exhibiting instantaneous loss of any fractional Sobolev regularity.

Planar limits of three-dimensional incompressible flows with helical symmetry

Helical symmetry is invariance under a one-dimensional group of rigid motions generated by a simultaneous rotation around a fixed axis and translation along the same axis. The key parameter in helical symmetry is the step or pitch, the magnitude of the translation after rotating one full turn around the symmetry axis. In this article we study the limits of three-dimensional helical viscous and inviscid incompressible flows in an infinite circular pipe, with respectively no-slip and no-penetration boundary conditions, as the step approaches infinity. We show that, as the step becomes large, the three-dimensional helical flow approaches a planar flow, which is governed by the so-called two-and-half Navier-Stokes and Euler equations, respectively.

Anisotropic regularity and optimal rates of convergence for the Finite Element Method on three dimensional polyhedral domains

We consider the model Poisson problem $-Δu = f \in Ω$, $u = g$ on $\pa Ω$, where $ Ω$ is a bounded polyhedral domain in $\RR^n$. The objective of the paper is twofold. The first objective is to review the well posedness and the regularity of our model problem using appropriate weighted spaces for the data and the solution. We use these results to derive the domain of the Laplace operator with zero boundary conditions on a concave domain, which seems not to have been fully investigated before. We also mention some extensions of our results to interface problems for the Elasticity equation. The second objective is to illustrate how anisotropic weighted regularity results for the Laplace operator in 3D are used in designing efficient finite element discretizations of elliptic boundary value problems, with the focus on the efficient discretization of the Poisson problem on polyhedral domains in $\RR^3$, following {\em Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim.}, 28(7-8):775--824, 2007. The anisotropic weighted regularity results described and used in the second part of the paper are a consequence of the well-posedness results in (isotropically) weighted Sobolev spaces described in the first part of the paper. The paper is based on the talk by the last named author at the Congress of Romanian Mathematicians, Brasov 2011, and is largely a survey paper.

A proof of Einstein's effective viscosity for a dilute suspension of spheres

We present a mathematical proof of Einstein's formula for the effective viscosity of a dilute suspension of rigid neutrally--buoyant spheres when the spheres are centered on the vertices of a cubic lattice. We keep the size of the container finite in the dilute limit and consider boundary effects. Einstein's formula is recovered as a first-order asymptotic expansion of the effective viscosity in the volume fraction. To rigorously justify this expansion, we obtain an explicit upper and lower bound on the effective viscosity. A lower bound is found using energy methods reminiscent of the work of Keller et al. An upper bound follows by obtaining an explicit estimate for the tractions, the normal component of the stress on the fluid boundary, in terms of the velocity on the fluid boundary. This estimate, in turn, is established using a boundary integral formulation for the Stokes equation. Our proof admits a generalization to other particle shapes and the inclusion of point forces to model self-propelled particles.
