Differential operators on G/U and the Gelfand-Graev action

Let G be a complex semisimple group and U its maximal unipotent subgroup. We study the algebra D(G/U) of algebraic differential operators on G/U and also its quasi-classical counterpart: the algebra of regular functions on the cotangent bundle. A long time ago, Gelfand and Graev have constructed an action of the Weyl group on D(G/U) by algebra automorphisms. The Gelfand-Graev construction was not algebraic, it involved analytic methods in an essential way. We give a new algebraic construction of the Gelfand-Graev action, as well as its quasi-classical counterpart. Our approach is based on Hamiltonian reduction and involves the ring of Whittaker differential operators on G/U, a twisted analogue of D(G/U). Our main result has an interpretation, via geometric Satake, in terms of spherical perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmanian for the Langlands dual group.

Parabolic induction and the Harish-Chandra D-module

Let G be a reductive group and L a Levi subgroup. Parabolic induction and restriction are a pair of adjoint functors between Ad-equivariant derived categories of either constructible sheaves or (not necessarily holonomic) D-modules on G and L, respectively. Bezrukavnikov and Yom Din proved, generalizing a classic result of Lusztig, that these functors are exact. In this paper, we consider a special case where L=T is a maximal torus. We give explicit formulas for parabolic induction and restriction in terms of the Harish-Chandra D-module on G x T. We show that this module is flat over D(T), which easily implies that parabolic induction and restriction are exact functors between the corresponding abelian categories of D-modules.

Moduli spaces, indecomposable objects and potentials over a finite field

Given a linear category over a finite field such that the moduli space of its objects is a smooth Artin stack (and some additional conditions) we give formulas for an exponential sum over the set of absolutely indecomposable objects and a stacky sum over the set of all objects of the category, respectively, in terms of the geometry of the cotangent bundle on the moduli stack. The first formula was inspired by the work of Hausel, Letellier, and Rodriguez-Villegas. It provides a new approach for counting absolutely indecomposable quiver representations, vector bundles with parabolic structure on a projective curve, and irreducible etale local systems (via a result of Deligne). Our second formula resembles formulas appearing in the theory of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

$SL_2$-action on Hilbert schemes and Calogero-Moser spaces

We study the natural $GL_2$-action on the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, resp. $SL_2$-action on the Calogero-Moser space. We describe the closure of the $GL_2$-orbit, resp. $SL_2$-orbit, of each point fixed by the corresponding diagonal torus. We also find the character of the representation of the group $GL_2$ in the fiber of the Procesi bundle, and its Calogero-Moser analogue, over the $SL_2$-fixed point.

Differential operators on G/U and the affine Grassmannian

We describe the equivariant cohomology of cofibers of spherical perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a reductive algebraic group in terms of the geometry of the Langlands dual group. In fact we give two equivalent descriptions: one in terms of D-modules of the basic affine space, and one in terms of intertwining operators for universal Verma modules. We also construct natural collections of isomorphisms parametrized by the Weyl group in these three contexts, and prove that they are compatible with our isomorphisms. As applications we reprove some results of the first author and of Braverman-Finkelberg.

Hamiltonian reduction and nearby cycles for Mirabolic D-modules

We study holonomic D-modules on SL_n(C)xC^n, called mirabolic modules, analogous to Lusztig's character sheaves. We describe the supports of simple mirabolic modules. We show that a mirabolic module is killed by the functor of Hamiltonian reduction from the category of mirabolic modules to the category of representations of the trigonometric Cherednik algebra if and only if the characteristic variety of the module is contained in the unstable locus. We introduce an analogue of the Verdier specialization functor for representations of Cherednik algebras which agrees, on category O, with the restriction functor of Bezrukavnikov and Etingof. In type A, we also consider a Verdier specialization functor on mirabolic D-modules. We show that Hamiltonian reduction intertwines specialization functors on mirabolic D-modules with the corresponding functors on representations of the Cherednik algebra. This allows us to apply known purity results for nearby cycles in the setting considered by Bezrukavnikov and Etingof.

Free products, cyclic homology, and the Gauss-Manin connection

We present a new approach to cyclic homology that does not involve the Connes differential and is based on a `noncommutative equivariant de Rham complex' of an associative algebra. The differential in that complex is a sum of the Karoubi-de Rham differential, which replaces the Connes differential, and another operation analogous to contraction with a vector field. As a byproduct, we give a simple explicit construction of the Gauss-Manin connection, introduced earlier by E. Getzler, on the relative cyclic homology of a flat family of associative algebras over a central base ring. We introduce and study `free-product deformations' of an associative algebra, a new type of deformation over a not necessarily commutative base ring. Natural examples of free-product deformations arise from preprojective algebras and group algebras for compact surface groups.

On primitive ideals

We extend two well-known results on primitive ideals in enveloping algebras of semisimple Lie algebras, the `Irreducibility theorem' and `Duflo theorem', to much wider classes of algebras. Our general version of Irreducibility theorem says that if A is a positively filtered associative algebra such that gr(A) is a commutative Poisson algebra with finitely many symplectic leaves, then the associated variety of any primitive ideal in A is the closure of a single connected symplectic leaf. Our general version of Duflo theorem says that if A is an algebra with a `triangular structure' (see sect. 2), then any primitive ideal in A is the annihilator of a simple highest weight module. Applications to Symplectic reflection algebras and Cherednik algebras are discussed.

Cherednik algebras and differential operators on quasi-invariants

We develop representation theory of the rational Cherednik algebra H associated to a finite Coxeter group W in a vector space h. It is applied to show that, for integral values of parameter `c', the algebra H is simple and Morita equivalent to D(h)#W, the cross product of W with the algebra of polynomial differential operators on h. We further study an algebra Q of quasi-invariant polynomials on h introduced by Chalykh, Feigin, and Veselov [CV], [FV], such that C[h]^W \subset Q \subset C[h]. We prove that the algebra D(Q) of differential operators on quasi-invariants is a simple algebra, Morita equivalent to D(h). The subalgebra D(Q)^W of W-invariant operators turns out to be isomorphic to the spherical subalgebra eHe \subset H. We also show that D(Q) is generated, as an algebra, by Q and its `Fourier dual Q*, and that D(Q) is a rank one projective (Q-Q*)-module (via multiplication-action on D(Q) on opposite sides).

Differential operators and BV structures in noncommutative geometry

We introduce a new formalism of differential operators for a general associative algebra A. It replaces Grothendieck's notion of differential operator on a commutative algebra in such a way that derivations of the commutative algebra are replaced by DDer(A), the bimodule of double derivations. Our differential operators act not on the algebra A itself but rather on F(A), a certain `Fock space' associated to any noncommutative algebra A in a functorial way. The corresponding algebra D(F(A)), of differential operators, is filtered and gr D(F(A)), the associated graded algebra, is commutative in some `twisted' sense. The resulting double Poisson structure on gr D(F(A)) is closely related to the one introduced by Van den Bergh. Specifically, we prove that gr D(F(A))=F(T_A(DDer(A)), provided A is smooth. It is crucial for our construction that the Fock space F(A) carries an extra-structure of a wheelgebra, a new notion closely related to the notion of a wheeled PROP. There are also notions of Lie wheelgebras, and so on. In that language, D(F(A)) becomes the universal enveloping wheelgebra of a Lie wheelgebroid of double derivations. In the second part of the paper we show, extending a classical construction of Koszul to the noncommutative setting, that any Ricci-flat, torsion-free bimodule connection on DDer(A) gives rise to a second order (wheeled) differential operator, a noncommutative analogue of the BV-operator.

Isospectral commuting variety and the Harish-Chandra D-module

Let g be a complex reductive Lie algebra with Cartan algebra h. Hotta and Kashiwara defined a holonomic D-module M, on g x h, called Harish-Chandra module. We give an explicit description of gr(M), the associated graded module with respect to a canonical Hodge filtration on M. The description involves the isospectral commuting variety, a subvariety X of g x g x h x h which is a finite extension of the variety of pairs of commuting elements of g. Our main result establishes an isomorphism of gr(M) with the structure sheaf of the normalization of X. It follows, thanks to the theory of polarized Hodge modules, that the normalization of the isospectral commuting variety is Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein, confirming a conjecture of M. Haiman. In the special case where g=gl_n, there is an open subset of the isospectral commuting variety that is closely related to the Hilbert scheme of n points in the plane. The sheaf gr(M) gives rise to a locally free sheaf on the Hilbert scheme. We show that the corresponding vector bundle is isomorphic to the Procesi bundle that plays an important role in the work of M. Haiman.

Noncommutative del Pezzo surfaces and Calabi-Yau algebras

The hypersurface in a 3-dimensional vector space with an isolated quasi-homogeneous elliptic singularity of type E_r,r=6,7,8, has a natural Poisson structure. We show that the family of del Pezzo surfaces of the corresponding type E_r provides a semiuniversal Poisson deformation of that Poisson structure. We also construct a deformation-quantization of the coordinate ring of such a del Pezzo surface. To this end, we first deform the polynomial algebra C[x,y,z] to a noncommutative algebra with generators x,y,z and the following 3 relations (where [u,v]_t = uv- t.vu): [x,y]_t=F_1(z), [y,z]_t=F_2(x), [z,x]_t=F_3(y). This gives a family of Calabi-Yau algebras A(F) parametrized by a complex number t and a triple F=(F_1,F_2,F_3), of polynomials in one variable of specifically chosen degrees. Our quantization of the coordinate ring of a del Pezzo surface is provided by noncommutative algebras of the form A(F)/(g) where (g) stands for the ideal of A(F) generated by a central element g, which generates the center of the algebra A(F) if F is generic enough.

On mirabolic D-modules

Let an algebraic group G act on X, a connected algebraic manifold, with finitely many orbits. For any Harish-Chandra pair (D,G) where D is a sheaf of twisted differential operators on X, we form a left ideal D.g in D generated by the Lie algebra g, of G. Then, D/D.g is a holonomic D-module and its restriction to a unique Zariski open dense G-orbit in X is a G-equivariant local system. We prove a criterion saying that the D-module D/D.g is isomorphic, under certain (quite restrictive) conditions, to a direct image of that local system to X. We apply this criterion in the special case where the group G=SL(n) acts diagonally on X = F \times F \times P^{n-1}, a triple product where F is the flag manifold for SL(n) and P^{n-1} is the projective space. We further relate D-modules on F \times F \times P^{n-1} to D-modules on the space SL(n) \times P^{n-1} via a pair, CH, HC, of adjoint functors, analogous to those used in Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. A second important result of the paper provides an explicit description of these functors showing that the functor HC gives an exact functor on the abelian category of mirabolic D-modules.

Poisson deformations of symplectic quotient singularities

We establish a connection between smooth symplectic resolutions and symplectic deformations of a (possibly singular) affine Poisson variety. In particular, let V be a finite-dimensional complex symplectic vector space and G\subset Sp(V) a finite subgroup. Our main result says that the so-called Calogero-Moser deformation of the orbifold V/G is, in an appropriate sense, a versal Poisson deformation. That enables us to determine the algebra structure on the rational cohomology H^*(X) of any smooth symplectic resolution X \to V/G (multiplicative McKay correspondence). We prove further that if G is an irreducible Weyl group in GL(h) and V=h+ h^* then no smooth symplectic resolution of V/G exists unless G is of types A,B, or C.

On the category O for rational Cherednik algebras

We study the category O of representations of the rational Cherednik algebra A attached to a complex reflection group W. We construct an exact functor, called Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov functor, from O to the category of H-modules, where H is the (finite) Iwahori-Hecke algebra associated to W. We prove that the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov functor induces an equivalence between O/O_tor, the quotient of O by the subcategory of A-modules supported on the discriminant and the category of finite-dimensional H-modules. The standard A-modules go, under this equivalence, to certain modules arising in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory of ``cells'', provided W is a Weyl group and the Hecke algebra H has equal parameters. We prove that the category O is equivalent to the module category over a finite dimensional algebra, a generalized "q-Schur algebra" associated to W.
