Altermagnetic and dipolar splitting of magnons in FeF$_2$

FeF$_2$ is a prototypical rutile antiferromagnet recently proposed as an altermagnet, with a magnetic symmetry that permits spin-split electronic bands and chiral magnons. Using very-high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal of FeF$_2$, we show that the dominant source of magnon splitting is in fact the long-range dipolar interaction rather than altermagnetic exchange terms. At momenta where the dipolar splitting vanishes, we observe additional broadening due to altermagnetic chiral splitting and estimate this splitting to be $\sim$35 $μ$eV. Polarized measurements further reveal that, where dipolar splitting is present, the chiral magnon modes become mixed and the resulting modes are predominantly linearly polarized, with at most a small chiral component. These findings highlight the significant effect of dipolar interactions on magnon chirality, particularly when altermagnetic interactions are weak.

Spin correlations in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 near saturation

Single crystal elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 in high magnetic fields. The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attributed to a staggered pattern of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

Coexistence and interaction of spinons and magnons in an antiferromagnet with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic quantum spin chains

In conventional quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets with quantum spins, magnetic excitations are carried by either magnons or spinons in different energy regimes: they do not coexist independently, nor could they interact with each other. In this Letter, by combining inelastic neutron scattering, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Random Phase Approximation calculations, we report the discovery and discuss the physics of the coexistence of magnons and spinons and their interactions in Botallackite-Cu2(OH)3Br. This is a unique quantum antiferromagnet consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 chains with weak inter-chain couplings. Our study presents a new paradigm where one can study the interaction between two different types of magnetic quasiparticles, magnons and spinons.

Crystal field Hamiltonian and anisotropy in KErSe2 and CsErSe2

We use neutron scattering and bulk property measurements to determine the single-ion crystal-field Hamiltonians of delafossites $\rm KErSe_2$ and $\rm CsErSe_2$. These two systems contains planar equilateral triangular Er lattices arranged in two stacking variants: rhombohedral (for K) or hexagonal (Cs). Our analysis shows that regardless the stacking order both compound exhibit an easy-plane ground state doublet with large $J_z=1/2$ terms and the potential for significant quantum effects, making them candidates for quantum spin liquid or other exotic ground states.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the layered semiconductor CrPS4

Compounds with two-dimensional (2D) layers of magnetic ions weakly connected by van der Waals bonding offer routes to enhance quantum behavior, stimulating both fundamental and applied interest. CrPS4 is one such magnetic van der Waals material, however, it has undergone only limited investigation. Here we present a comprehensive series of neutron scattering measurements to determine the magnetic structure and exchange interactions. The observed magnetic excitations allow a high degree of constraint on the model parameters not normally associated with measurements on a powder sample. The results demonstrate the 2D nature of the magnetic interactions, while also revealing the importance of interactions along 1D chains within the layers. The subtle role of competing interactions is observed, which manifest in a non-trivial magnetic transition and a tunable magnetic structure in a small applied magnetic field through a spin-flop transition. Our results on the bulk compound provide insights that can be applied to an understanding of the behavior of reduced layer CrPS4.

Signatures of coupling between spin waves and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi$_2$

We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnBi$_2$, which reveal features consistent with a direct coupling of magnetic excitations to Dirac fermions. In contrast with the large broadening of magnetic spectra observed in antiferromagnetic metals such as the iron pnictides, here the spin waves exhibit a small but resolvable intrinsic width, consistent with our theoretical analysis. The subtle manifestation of spin-fermion coupling is a consequence of the Dirac nature of the conduction electrons, including the vanishing density of states near the Dirac points. Accounting for the Dirac fermion dispersion specific to \ymb\ leads to particular signatures, such as the nearly wave-vector independent damping observed in the experiment.

Anisotropic exchange within decoupled tetrahedra in the quantum breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11

The low energy spin excitation spectrum of the breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 has been investigated with inelastic neutron scattering. Several nearly resolution limited modes with no observable dispersion are observed at 250 mK while, at elevated temperatures, transitions between excited levels become visible. To gain deeper insight, a theoretical model of isolated Yb3+ tetrahedra parametrized by four anisotropic exchange constants is constructed. The model reproduces the inelastic neutron scattering data, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility with high fidelity. The fitted exchange parameters reveal a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a very large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Using this model, we predict the appearance of an unusual octupolar paramagnet at low temperatures and speculate on the development of inter-tetrahedron correlations.

Canted Magnetic Ground State of Quarter-Doped Manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er)

Polycrystalline samples of the quarter-doped manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were studied by X-ray diffraction and AC/DC susceptibility measurements. All five samples are orthorhombic and exhibit similar magnetic properties: enhanced ferromagnetism below $T_1$ ($\sim80$ K) and a spin glass (SG) state below $T_{SG}$ ($\sim30$ K). With increasing $R^{3+}$ ionic size, both $T_1$ and $T_{SG}$ generally increase. The single crystal neutron diffraction results on Tb$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ revealed that the SG state is mainly composed of a short-range ordered version of a novel canted (i.e. noncollinear) antiferromagnetic spin state. Furthermore, calculations based on the double exchange model for quarter-doped manganites reveal that this new magnetic phase provides a transition state between the ferromagnetic state and the theoretically predicted spin-orthogonal stripe phase.

Spin-lattice coupling mediated multiferroicity in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O

We report a neutron diffraction study of the multiferroic mechanism in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O, a molecular compound that exhibits magnetically induced ferroelectricity. This material exhibits two successive magnetic transitions on cooling: a long-range order transition to an incommensurate (IC) collinear sinusoidal spin state at TN=7.3 K, followed by a second transition to an IC cycloidal spin state at TFE=6.8 K, the later of which is accompanied by spontaneous ferroelectric polarization. The cycloid structure is strongly distorted by spin-lattice coupling as evidenced by the observations of both odd and even higher-order harmonics associated with the cycloid wave vector, and a weak commensurate phase that coexists with the IC phase. The appearance of the 2nd-order harmonic coincides with the onset of the electric polarization, thereby providing unambiguous evidence that the induced electric polarization is mediated by the spin-lattice interaction. Our results for this system, in which the orbital angular momentum is expected to be quenched, are remarkably similar to those of the prototypical TbMnO3, in which the magnetoelectric effect is attributed to spin-orbit coupling.

Structural transition and orbital glass physics in near itinerant CoV2O4

The ferrimagnetic spinel $\mathrm{CoV_2O_4}$ has been a topic of intense recent interest, both as a frustrated insulator with unquenched orbital degeneracy and as a near-itinerant magnet which can be driven metallic with moderate applied pressure. Here, we report on our recent neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering measurements on powders with minimal cation site disorder. Our main new result is the identification of a weak ($\frac{Δa}{a} \sim 10^{-4}$), first order structural phase transition at $T^*$ = 90 K, the same temperature where spin canting was seen in recent single crystal measurements. This transition is characterized by a short-range distortion of oxygen octahedral positions, and inelastic data further establish a weak $Δ\sim 1.25 meV$ spin gap at low temperature. Together, these findings provide strong support for the local orbital picture and the existence of an orbital glass state at temperatures below $T^*$.

Two-dimensional Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 antiferromagnet

We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.

Unusual UUDD magnetic chain structure of the spin-1/2 tetragonally distorted spinel GeCu2O4

GeCu2O4 exhibits a tetragonal spinel structure due to the strong Jahn-Teller distortion associated with Cu2+ ions. We show that its magnetic structure can be described as slabs composed of a pair of layers with orthogonally oriented spin 1/2 Cu chains in the basal ab plane. The spins between the two layers within a slab are collinearly aligned while the spin directions of neighboring slabs are perpendicular to each other. Interestingly, we find that spins along each chain form an unusual up-up-down-down (UUDD) pattern, suggesting a non-negligible nearest-neighbor biquadratic exchange interaction in the effective classical spin Hamiltonian. We hypothesize that spin-orbit coupling and orbital mixing of Cu2+ ions in this system is non-negligible, which calls for future calculations using perturbation theory with extended Hilbert (spin and orbital) space and calculations based on density functional theory including spin-orbit coupling and looking at the global stability of the UUDD state.

Disorder from order among anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising spin chains in SrHo$_2$O$_4$

We describe why Ising spin chains with competing interactions in $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ segregate into ordered and disordered ensembles at low temperatures ($T$). Using elastic neutron scattering, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, the two distinct spin chains are inferred to have Néel ($\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow$) and double-Néel ($\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$) ground states respectively. Below $T_\mathrm{N}=0.68(2)$~K, the Néel chains develop three dimensional (3D) long range order (LRO), which arrests further thermal equilibration of the double-Néel chains so they remain in a disordered incommensurate state for $T$ below $T_\mathrm{S}= 0.52(2)$~K. $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ distills an important feature of incommensurate low dimensional magnetism: kinetically trapped topological defects in a quasi$-d-$dimensional spin system can preclude order in $d+1$ dimensions.

Spin liquid ground state in the frustrated J1-J2 zigzag chain system BaTb2O4

We have investigated polycrystalline samples of the zigzag chain system BaTb$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Despite the onset of Tb$^{3+}$ short-range antiferromagnetic correlations at $|θ_{CW}|$ $=$ 18.5 K and a very large effective moment, our combined measurements indicate that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ remains paramagnetic down to 0.095 K. The magnetic properties of this material show striking similarities to the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and therefore we propose that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ is a new large moment spin liquid candidate.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in CeCu$_{6-x}T_x$ ($T$ = Ag, Pd)

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($δ_1$ 0 $δ_2$) where $δ_1 \sim 0.62$, $δ_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $δ_1 \sim 0.64$, $δ_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Complex magnetic behavior of the sawtooth Fe chains in Rb$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O(AsO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

Results of magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements on oxy-arsenate Rb$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O(AsO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ are reported. The crystal structure of this compound contains pseudo-one-dimensional [Fe$_{2}$O$_{6}$]$^\infty$ sawtooth-like chains, formed by corner sharing isosceles triangles of $Fe^{3+}$ ions occupying two nonequivalent crystallographic sites. The chains extend infinitely along the crystallographic $b$-axis and are structurally confined from one another via diamagnetic (AsO$_{4}$)$^{3-}$ units along the $a$-axis, and Rb$^+$ cations along the $c$-axis direction. Neutron diffraction measurements indicate the onset of a long range antiferromagnetic order below approximately 25 K. The magnetic structure consists of ferrimagnetic chains which are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other. Within each chain, one of the two Fe sites carries a moment which lies along the \emph{b}-axis, while the second site bears a canted moment in the opposite direction. Externally applied magnetic field induces a transition to a ferrimagnetic state, in which the coupling between the sawtooth chains becomes ferromagnetic. Magnetization measurements performed on optically-aligned single crystals reveal evidence for an uncompensated magnetization at low magnetic fields that could emerge from to a phase-segregated state with ferrimagnetic inclusions or from antiferromagnetic domain walls. The observed magnetic states and the competition between them is expected to arise from strongly frustrated interactions within the sawtooth chains and relatively weak coupling between them.

Magnetic and Structural Phase Transitions in the Spinel Compound Fe1+xCr2-xO4

Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system Fe1+xCr2-xO4(0.0<=x<=1.0). The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, Fe2+-Fe3+ hopping, and disorder among Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ ions.

Magnetic ordering in the frustrated J1-J2 Ising chain candidate BaNd2O4

The AR$_2$O$_4$ family (R = rare earth) have recently been attracting interest as a new series of frustrated magnets, with the magnetic R atoms forming zigzag chains running along the $c$-axis. We have investigated polycrystalline BaNd$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. Magnetic Bragg peaks are observed below $T_N$ $=$ 1.7 K, and they can be indexed with a propagation vector of $\vec{k}$ $=$ (0 1/2 1/2). The signal from magnetic diffraction is well described by long-range ordering from only one of the two types of Nd zigzag chains, with collinear up-up-down-down intrachain spin configurations. Furthermore, low temperature magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal two field-induced spin transitions at 2.5 T and 4 T for $T$ $=$ 0.46 K. The high field phase is paramagnetic, while the intermediate field state may arise from a spin transition of the long-range ordered Nd chains, resulting in an up-up-down intrachain spin configuration. The proposed intermediate field state is consistent with the magnetic structure determined in zero field for these chains by NPD, as both phases are predicted for the classical Ising chain model with nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions.

Magnons and a two-component spin gap in FeV2O4

The spinel vanadates have become a model family for exploring orbital order on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice, and recent debate has focused on the symmetry of local crystal fields at the cation sites. Here, we present neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$, a recent example of a ferrimagnetic spinel vanadate which is available in single crystal form. We report the existence of two emergent magnon modes at low temperatures, which draw strong parallels with the closely related material, $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. We were able to reproduce the essential elements of both the magnetic ordering pattern and the dispersion of the inelastic modes with semi- classical spin wave calculations, using a minimal model that implies a sizeable single-ion anisotropy on the vanadium sublattice. Taking into account the direction of ordered spins, we associate this anisotropy with the large trigonal distortion of $\mathrm{VO_6}$ octahedra, previously observed via neutron powder diffraction measurements. We further report on the spin gap, which is an order-of-magnitude larger than that observed in $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. By looking at the overall temperature dependence, we were able to show that the gap magnitude is largely associated with the ferro-orbital order known to exist on the iron sublattice, but the contribution to the gap from the vanadium sublattice is in fact comparable to what is reported in the Mn compound. This reinforces the conclusion that the spin canting transition is associated with the ordering of vanadium orbitals in this system, and closer analysis indicates closely related physics underlying orbital transitions in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$ and $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$.

Inhomogeneous magnetism in the doped kagome lattice of LaCuO2.66

The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

Structural and magnetic properties in the quantum S=1/2 dimer systems Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 with site disorder

We report a comprehensive study of dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 samples, where x=0, 0.06, 0.15, and 0.53. A Jahn-Teller structure transition occurs for x=0, 0.06, and 0.15 samples and the transition temperature is reduced upon vanadium substitution from 70(2) K at x=0 to 60(2) K at x=0.06 and 0.15. The structure becomes less distorted as x increases and such transition disappears at x=0.53. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum indicates that the singlet ground state remains unaltered and spin gap energy Δ=1.3(1) meV is identical within the instrument resolution for all x. In addition, the dispersion bandwidth W decreases with increase of x. At x=0.53, W is reduced to 1.4(1) meV from 2.0(1) meV at x=0.

Magnetic Neutron Scattering of Thermally Quenched K-Co-Fe Prussian Blue Analogue Photomagnet

Magnetic order in the thermally quenched photomagnetic Prussian blue analogue coordination polymer K0.27Co[Fe(CN)6]0.73[D2O6]0.27 1.42D2O has been studied down to 4 K with unpolarized and polarized neutron powder diffraction as a function of applied magnetic field. Analysis of the data allows the onsite coherent magnetization of the Co and Fe spins to be established. Specifically, magnetic fields of 1 T and 4 T induce moments parallel to the applied field, and the sample behaves as a ferromagnet with a wandering axis.

Magnetic order and ice rules in the multiferroic spinel FeV2O4

We present a neutron diffraction study of FeV2O4, which is rare in exhibiting spin and orbital degrees of freedom on both cation sublattices of the spinel structure. Our data confirm the existence of three structural phase transitions previously identified with x-ray powder diffraction, and reveal that the lower two transitions are associated with sequential collinear and canted ferrimagnetic transitions involving both cation sites. Through consideration of local crystal and spin symmetry, we further conclude that Fe2+ cations are ferro-orbitally ordered below 135K and V3+ orbitals order at 60K in accordance with predictions for vanadium spinels with large trigonal distortions and strong spin-orbit coupling. Intriguingly, the direction of ordered vanadium spins at low temperatures obey `ice rules' more commonly associated with the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore systems.

Magnetic structure determination of Ca$_3$LiOsO$_6$ using neutron and x-ray scattering

We present a neutron and x-ray scattering investigation of Ca$_3$LiOsO$_6$, a material predicted to host magnetic ordering solely through an extended superexchange pathway involving two anions, an interaction mechanism that has undergone relatively little investigation. This contrasts with the ubiquitous superexchange interaction mechanism involving a single anion that has well defined and long standing rules. Despite the apparent 1D nature and triangular units of magnetic osmium ions the onset of magnetic correlations has been observed at a high temperature of 117 K in bulk measurements. We experimentally determine the magnetically ordered structure and show it to be long range and three dimensional. Our results support the model of extended superexchange interaction.

Magnetically driven metal-insulator transition in NaOsO3

The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is one of the most dramatic manifestations of electron correlations in materials. Various mechanisms producing MITs have been extensively considered, including the Mott (electron localization via Coulomb repulsion), Anderson (localization via disorder) and Peierls (localization via distortion of a periodic 1D lattice). One additional route to a MIT proposed by Slater, in which long-range magnetic order in a three dimensional system drives the MIT, has received relatively little attention. Using neutron and X-ray scattering we show that the MIT in NaOsO3 is coincident with the onset of long-range commensurate three dimensional magnetic order. Whilst candidate materials have been suggested, our experimental methodology allows the first definitive demonstration of the long predicted Slater MIT. We discuss our results in the light of recent reports of a Mott spin-orbit insulating state in other 5d oxides.

Structural and magnetic properties of the new cobaltate series (BaSr)4-xLa2xCo4O15

We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new class of cobaltates with the chemical formula (BaSr)4-xLa2xCo4O15 (x = 0, 0.5 and 1). These compounds crystallize in a hexagonal structure in which cobalt ions are distributed among two distinct crystallographic sites with different oxygen coordination. Three Co-O tetrahedra and one octahedron are linked by shared oxygen atoms to form Co4O15 clusters, which are packed together into a honeycomb-like network. Partial substitution of Sr and/or Ba atoms by La allows one to adjust the degree of Co valence mixing, but all compositions remain subject to a random distribution of charge. Magnetic susceptibility together with neutron scattering measurements reveal that all studied specimens are characterized by competing ferro- and antiferro-magnetic exchange interactions that give rise to a three dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass state. Neutron spectroscopy shows a clear trend of slowing down of spin-dynamics upon increasing La concentration, suggesting a reduction in charge randomness in the doped samples.

Absence of localized-spin magnetism in the narrow-gap semiconductor FeSb2

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements aimed at investigating the origin of the temperature-induced paramagnetism in the narrow-gap semiconductor FeSb2. We find that inelastic response for energies up to 60 meV and at temperatures 4.2 K, 300 K and 550 K is essentially consistent with the scattering by lattice phonon excitations. We observe no evidence for a well-defined magnetic peak corresponding to the excitation from the non-magnetic S = 0 singlet ground state to a state of magnetic multiplet in the localized spin picture. Our data establish the quantitative limit of S_{eff}^2 < 0.25 on the fluctuating local spin. However, a broad magnetic scattering continuum in the 15 meV to 35 meV energy range is not ruled out by our data. Our findings make description in terms of the localized Fe spins unlikely and suggest that paramagnetic susceptibility of itinerant electrons is at the origin of the temperature-induced magnetism in FeSb2.

Continuous magnetic and structural phase transitions in Fe1+yTe

We report a sequence of continuous phase transformations in iron telluride, Fe1+yTe (y~0.1), which is observed by combining neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystal samples. While a gradual increase of magnetic scattering near the wave vector (0.5, 0, 0.5) is seen below T = 70 K, a temperature where the discontinuous first order magneto-structural phase transition is found in systems with small y (< 0.06), the reduction of the lattice symmetry in Fe1.1Te only occurs at Ts = 63 K. Below TN = 57.5 K the long-range magnetic order develops, whose incommensurate wave vector Qm varies with temperature. Finally, at Tm ~ 45 K the system enters the low-T phase, where Qm is locked at (0.48, 0, 0.5). We conclude that these instabilities are weak compared to the strength of the underlying interactions, and we suggest that the impact of the Fe interstitials on the transitions can be treated with random-field models.

Evolution of Structural and Physical Properties of Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7 with Mn Concentration

Layered ruthenates are prototype materials with strong structure-property correlations. We report the structural and physical properties of double-layered perovskite Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7 single crystals with 0<=x<=0.7. Single crystal x-ray diffraction refinements reveal that Mn doping on the Ru site leads to the shrinkage of unit-cell volume and disappearance of (Ru/Mn)O6 octahedron rotation when x>0.16, while the crystal structure remains tetragonal. Correspondingly, the electric and magnetic properties change with x. The electrical resistivity reveals metallic character (d rho/d T>0) at high temperatures but insulating behavior (d rho/d T<0) below a characteristic temperature T_MIT. Interestingly, T_MIT is different from T_M, at which magnetic susceptibility reaches maximum. T_MIT monotonically increases with increasing x while T_M shows non-monotonic dependence with x. The difference between T_MIT and T_M (T_MIT>T_M) becomes larger when x>0.16. The constructed phase diagram consists of five distinct regions, demonstrating that the physical properties of such a system can easily be tuned by chemical doping.

Level crossings and zero-field splitting in the \{Cr$_8$\}-cubane spin-cluster by inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization studies

Inelastic neutron scattering in variable magnetic field and high-field magnetization measurements, at the milikelvin temperature range, were performed to gain insight into the low-energy magnetic excitation spectrum and the field-induced level crossings in the molecular spin cluster \{Cr$_8$\}-cubane. These complementary techniques provide consistent estimates of the lowest level-crossing field. The overall features of the experimental data are explained using an isotropic Heisenberg model, based on three distinct exchange interactions linking the eight Cr$^{\text{III}}$ paramagnetic centers (spins $s = 3/2$), that is supplemented with a relatively large molecular magnetic anisotropy term for the lowest S=1 multiplet. It is noted that the existence of the anisotropy is clearly evident from the magnetic field dependence of the excitations in the INS measurements, while the magnetization measurements are not sensitive to its effects.

Synthesis, Structure and Properties of Tetragonal Sr2M3As2O2 (M3 = Mn3, Mn2Cu and MnZn2) Compounds Containing Alternating CuO2-Type and FeAs-Type Layers

Polycrystalline samples of Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2, Sr2Mn3As2O2, and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2 were synthesized. Their temperature- and applied magnetic field-dependent structural, transport, thermal, and magnetic properties were characterized by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These compounds have a body-centered-tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4/mmm) that consists of MO2 (M = Zn and/or Mn) oxide layers similar to the CuO2 layers in high superconducting transition temperature Tc cuprate superconductors, and intermetallic MAs (M = Cu and/or Mn) layers similar to the FeAs layers in high-Tc pnictides. These two types of layers alternate along the crystallographic c-axis and are separated by Sr atoms. The site occupancies of Mn, Cu and Zn were studied using Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. The temperature dependences of rho suggest metallic character for Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 and semiconducting character for Sr2Mn3As2O2 and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2. Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 is inferred to be a ferrimagnet with a Curie temperature TC = 95(1) K. Remarkably, we find that the magnetic ground state structure changes from a G-type antiferromagnetic structure in Sr2Mn3As2O2 to an A-type ferrimagnetic structure in Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 in which the Mn ions in each layer are ferromagnetically aligned, but are antiferromagnetically aligned between layers.

Excitations from a chiral magnetized state of a frustrated quantum spin liquid

We study excitations in weakly interacting pairs of quantum spin ladders coupled through geometrically frustrated bonds. The ground state is a disordered spin liquid, that at high fields is replaced by an ordered chiral helimagnetic phase. The spectra observed by high-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the prototype compound Sul-Cu2Cl4 are qualitatively different from those in the previously studied frustration-free spin liquids. Beyond the critical field Hc=3.7 T, the soft mode that drives the quantum phase transition spawns two separate excitations: a gapless Goldstone mode and a massive magnon. Additional massive quasiparticles are clearly visible below Hc, but are destroyed in the ordered phase. In their place one observes a sharply bound excitation continuum.

Lattice dynamics in magnetic superelastic Ni-Mn-In alloys. Neutron scattering and ultrasonic experiments

Neutron scattering and ultrasonic methods have been used to study the lattice dynamics of two single crystals of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys close to Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ magnetic superelastic composition. The paper reports the experimental determination of the low-lying phonon dispersion curves and the elastic constants for this alloy system. We found that the frequencies of the TA$_{2}$ branch are relatively low and it exhibits a small dip anomaly at a wave number $ξ_{0} \approx 1/3$, which softens with decreasing temperature. Associated with the softening of this phonon, we also observed the softening of the shear elastic constant $C'=(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$. Both temperature softenings are typical for bcc based solids which undergo martensitic transformations and reflect the dynamical instability of the cubic lattice against shearing of $\{110\}$ planes along $<1\bar{1}0>$ directions. Additionally, we measured low-lying phonon dispersion branches and elastic constants in applied magnetic fields aimed to characterize the magnetoelastic coupling.

Excitations from a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons in coupled spin ladders

The weakly coupled quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compound (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ is studied by neutron scattering in magnetic fields exceeding the critical field of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Commensurate long-range order and the associated Goldstone mode are detected and found to be similar to those in a reference 3D quantum magnet. However, for the upper two massive magnon branches the observed behavior is totally different, culminating in a drastic collapse of excitation bandwidth beyond the transition point.

Spin density distribution in a partially magnetized organic quantum magnet

Polarized neutron diffraction experiments on an organic magnetic material reveal a highly skewed distribution of spin density within the magnetic molecular unit. The very large magnitude of the observed effect is due to quantum spin fluctuations. The data are in quantitative agreement with direct diagonalization results for a model spin Hamiltonian, and provide insight on the actual microscopic origin of the relevant exchange interactions.

Lattice dynamics and phonon softening in Ni-Mn-Al Heusler alloys

Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering have been used to study a single crystal of the Ni$_{54}$Mn$_{23}$Al$_{23}$ Heusler alloy over a broad temperature range. The paper reports the first experimental determination of the low-lying phonon dispersion curves for this alloy system. We find that the frequencies of the TA$_2$ modes are relatively low. This branch exhibits an anomaly (dip) at a wave number $ξ_{0} ={1/3}\approx 0.33$, which softens with decreasing temperature. Associated with this anomalous dip at $ξ_{0}$, an elastic central peak scattering is also present. We have also observed satellites due to the magnetic ordering.

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.
