NMR evidence against a spin-nematic nature of the presaturation phase in the frustrated magnet SrZnVO(PO4)2

Using $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) we investigate the recently discovered presaturation phase in the highly frustrated two-dimensional spin system SrZnVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ [F. Landolt et al., Phys. Rev. B 104, 224435 (2021)]. Our data provide two pieces of evidence against the presumed spin-nematic character of this phase: i) NMR spectra reveal that it hosts a dipolar spin order and ii) the 1/$T_1$ relaxation rate data recorded above the saturation field can be fitted by the sum of a single-magnon term, exponential in the gap, and a critical second-order term, exponential in the triple gap, leaving no space for a nematic spin dynamics, characterized by a double-gap exponential. We explain the unexpectedly broad validity of the simple fit and the related critical spin dynamics.

Spin correlations in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 near saturation

Single crystal elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 in high magnetic fields. The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attributed to a staggered pattern of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

Spin Density Wave versus Fractional Magnetization Plateau in a Triangular Antiferromagnet

We report an excellent realization of the highly non-classical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Anisotropy-induced soliton excitation in magnetized strong-rung spin ladders

We report low temperature electron spin resonance experimental and theoretical studies of an archetype $S=1/2$ strong-rung spin ladder material (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$. Unexpected dynamics is detected deep in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regime. Close to the point where the system is half-magnetized (and believed to be equivalent to a gapless easy plane chain in zero field) we observed orientation-dependent spin gap and anomalous $g$-factor values. Field theoretical analysis demonstrates that the observed low-energy excitation modes in magnetized (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ are solitonic excitations caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction presence.

Magnetic phase diagram of the linear quantum ferro-antiferromagnet Cs$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$

A single-crystal sample of the frustrated quasi one-dimensional quantum magnet Cs$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ is investigated by magnetic and thermodynamic measurements.A combination of specific heat and magnetic torque measurements maps out the entire $H$-$T$ phase diagram for three orientations.Remarkably, a new phase emerges below the saturation field, irrespective of the crystal orientation. It is suggested that the presaturation phase represents spin-nematic order or other multi-magnon condensate. The phase diagrams within the long-range ordered dome are qualitatively different for each geometry. In particular, multiple transitions are identified in the field along the chain direction.

Pre-saturation phase in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$

Magnetization, magnetic torque, neutron diffraction and NMR experiments are used to map out the $H$$-$$T$ phase diagram of the prototypical quasi-two-dimensional ferro-antiferromagnet Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 27 T. When the field is applied perpendicular to the axis of magnetic anisotropy, a new magnetic state emerges through a discontinuous transition and persists in a narrow field range just below saturation. The measured NMR spectra suggest a complex and possibly incommensurate magnetic order in that regime.

Microwave dynamics of pure and doped anisotropic S=1 chain antiferromagnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

We studied electron spin resonance in a quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2, demonstrating a field-induced quantum phase transition from a quantum-disordered phase to an antiferromagnet. We observe two branches of the antiferromagnetic resonance of the ordered phase, one of them has a gap and the other is a Goldstone mode with zero frequency at a magnetic field along the four-fold axis. This zero frequency mode acquires a gap at a small tilting of the magnetic field with respect to this direction. The upper gap was found to be reduced in the doped compound Ni(Cl(1-x)Br(x))2-4SC(NH2)2 with $x=0.21$. This reduction is unexpected because of the previously reported rise of the main exchange constant in a doped compound. Further, a nonresonant diamagnetic susceptibility $χ^{\prime}$ was found for the ordered phase in a wide frequency range above the quasi-Goldstone mode. This dynamic diamagnetism is as large as the dynamic susceptibility of the paramagnetic resonance. We speculate that it originates from a two-magnon absorption band of low-frequency dispersive magnon branch.

Dichotomy between Attractive and Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids in Spin Ladders

We present two methods to determine whether the interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state of a spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder are attractive or repulsive. The first method combines two bulk measurements, of magnetization and specific heat, to deduce the TLL parameter that distinguishes between the attraction and repulsion. The second one is based on a local-probe, NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation. For the strong-leg spin ladder compound $\mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$ we find that the isothermal magnetic field dependence of the relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}(H)$, displays a concave curve between the two critical fields that bound the TLL regime. This is in sharp contrast to the convex curve previously reported for a strong-rung ladder $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$. Within the TLL description, we show that the concavity directly reflects the attractive interactions, while the convexity reflects the repulsive ones.

Electron Spin Resonance in a Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Strong-rung Ladder

Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

Emergent interacting spin islands in a depleted strong-leg Heisenberg ladder

Properties of the depleted Heisenberg spin ladder material series (C$_7$H$_{10}$N)$_2$Cu$_{1-z}$Zn$_{z}$Br$_4$ have been studied by the combination of magnetic measurements and neutron spectroscopy. Disorder-induced degrees of freedom lead to a specific magnetic response, described in terms of emergent strongly interacting "spin island" objects. The structure and dynamics of the spin islands is studied by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. This allows to determine their spatial shape and to observe their mutual interactions, manifested by strong spectral in-gap contributions.

Magnetic ordering in the ultra-pure site-diluted spin chain materials SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$

Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Raman study of spin excitations in the tunable quantum spin ladder Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$

Raman spectroscopy is used to study magnetic excitations in the quasi one dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum spin systems Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$. The low energy spectrum is found to be dominated by a two-magnon continuum as expected from the numerical calculations for the Heisenberg spin ladder model. The continuum shifts to higher energies as more Br is introduced. The cutoff of the scattering increases faster than the onset indicating that the increase of exchange constant along the leg is the main effect on the magnetic properties. The upper and lower continuum thresholds are measured as a function of Br content across the entire range and compared to estimates based on previous bulk studies. We observe small systematic deviations that are discussed.

Antiferromagnetic order in weakly coupled random spin chains

The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chains, as relevant for recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling $J_{\perp}$. Results for the ordering temperature $T_N$ and for the ordered moment $m_0$ are presented and are both reduced with the increasing disorder agreeing with experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing $J_{\perp}$, consistent with $μ$SR experimental findings.

Dynamics of a bond-disordered $S=1$ quantum magnet near $z=1$ criticality

Neutron scattering is used to study NiCl$_{2-2x}$Br$_{2x}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=0.06$, a bond-disordered modification of the well-known gapped $S=1$ antiferromagnetic quantum spin system NiCl$_{2}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$. The magnetic excitation spectrum throughout Brillouin zone is mapped out at $T=60$ mK using high-resolution time-of-flight spectroscopy. It is found that the dispersion of spin excitation is renormalized, as compared to that in the parent compound. The lifetime of excitations near the bottom of the band is substantially decreased. No localized states are found below the gap energy $Δ\simeq0.2$ meV. At the same time, localized zero wave vector states are detected above the top of the band. The results are consistent with a more or less continuous random distribution of bond strengths, and a discrete, possibly bimodal, distribution of single-ion anisotropies in the disordered material.

Electron spin resonance in a model S=1/2 chain antiferromagnet with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction

The electron spin resonance spectrum of a quasi 1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet K2CuSO4Br2 was found to demonstrate an energy gap and a doublet of resonance lines in a wide temperature range between the Curie--Weiss and Neèl temperatures. This type of magnetic resonance absorption corresponds well to the two-spinon continuum of excitations in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction between the magnetic ions. A resonance mode of paramagnetic defects demonstrating strongly anisotropic behavior due to interaction with spinon excitations in the main matrix is also observed.

ESR study of the spin ladder with uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moria interaction

Evolution of the ESR absorption in a strong-leg spin ladder magnet (C$_7$H$_{10}$N$_2$)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (abbreviated as DIMPY) is studied from 300K to 400mK. Temperature dependence of the ESR relaxation follows a staircase of crossovers between different relaxation regimes. We ague that the main mechanism of ESR line broadening in DIMPY is uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moria interaction ($|\vec{D}|=0.20$K) with an effective longitudinal component along an exchange bond of Cu ions within the legs resulting from the low crystal symmetry of DIMPY and nontrivial orbital ordering. The same Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction results in the lifting of the triplet excitation degeneracy, revealed through the weak splitting of the ESR absorption at low temperatures.

Finite-temperature scaling of spin correlations in a partially magnetized Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain

Inelastic neutron scattering is employed to study transverse spin correlations of a Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain compound in a magnetic field of 7.5 T. The target compound is the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain material 2(1,4-Dioxane)$\cdot$2(H$_2$O)$\cdot$CuCl$_2$, or CuDCl for short. The validity and the limitations of the scaling relation for the transverse dynamic structure factor are tested, discussed and compared to the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid theory and to Bethe-ansatz results for the Heisenberg model.

Finite-temperature scaling of spin correlations in an experimental realization of the one-dimensional Ising quantum critical point

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the finite-temperature scaling behavior of the local dynamic structure factor in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NTENP ($\text{Ni(N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)propane-1,3-diamine)(}μ\text{-NO}_2\text{)ClO}_4$), at its field-induced Ising quantum critical point. The validity and the limitations of the theoretically predicted scaling relations are tested.

Formation of the S=1 paramagnetic centers in the bond-diluted spin-gap magnet

Electron spin resonance experiment reveals that non-magnetic bond doping of the spin-gap magnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (abbreviated PHCC) results in the formation of $S=1$ paramagnetic centers that dominate low-temperature ESR response. We have followed evolution of this signal with doping impurity content and have found that these centers concentration is quadratic over the impurity content. We also observe coexistence of the ESR responses from these local centers and from delocalized triplet excitations over certain temperature range.

Giant dielectric nonlinearities at a magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation

We experimentally investigate the dielectric response of the low-dimensional gapped quantum magnet Cu$_2$Cl$_{4}\cdot$H$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$ near a magnetic field-induced quantum critical point, which separates the quantum-disordered and helimagnetic ground states. The observed magnetocapacitive effect originates from an improper ferroelectric nature of the transition, which itself is perhaps one of the best known realizations of Bose--Einstein condensation of magnons. Despite that, we find that the magnetocapacitive effect associated with the transition exhibits huge and very unusual anharmonicities.

Scaling of temporal correlations in an attractive Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid

We report temperature-dependent neutron scattering measurements of the local dynamic structure factor in the quantum spin ladder (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ in a magnetic field $H=9$~T, in its gapless quantum-critical phase. We show that the measured quantity has a scaling form consistent with expectations for a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with attraction. The measured Luttinger parameter $K\approx1.25$ and scaling function are in excellent agreement with density matrix renormalization group numerical calculations for the underlying spin Hamiltonian.

Spin dynamics in pressure-induced magnetically-ordered phases in PHCC

We present inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the $S=1/2$ frustrated gapped quantum magnet piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate under applied hydrostatic pressure. These results show that at 9 kbar the magnetic triplet excitations in the system are gapless, contrary to what was previously reported. We show that the changes in the excitation spectrum can be primarily attributed to the change in a single exchange pathway.

Critical exponents and intrinsic broadening of the field-induced transition in NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

The field-induced ordering transition in the quantum spin system NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ is studied by means of neutron diffraction, AC magnetometry and relaxation calorimetry. The interpretation of the data is strongly influenced by a finite distribution of transition fields in the samples, which was present but disregarded in previous studies. Taking this effect into account, we find that the order-parameter critical exponent is inconsistent with the BEC universality class even at temperatures below 100 mK. All results are discussed in comparison with previous measurements and with recent similar studies of disordered Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$.

Formation of gapless triplets in the bond-doped spin-gap antiferromagnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)(Cu$_2$Cl$_6$)

We report results of an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of a spin-gap antiferromagnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)(Cu$_2$Cl$_6$) (nicknamed PHCC) with chlorine ions partially substituted by bromine. We found that up to 10% of nominal doping the contribution of the random defects to the absorption spectra remains at about 0.1% per copper ion, almost the same as in the pure system. Instead, a particular kind of ESR absorption corresponding to gapless S=1 triplets is observed at low temperatures in samples with high nominal bromine content x>5%. Increase of bromine concentration also leads to the systematic broadening of ESR absorption line indicating reduction of the quasi-particles lifetime.

Inhomogeneous ordering in weakly coupled Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chains with random bonds

Long range magnetic ordering in the quasi-one-dimensional random-bond antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$O$_7$ is studied in $μ$SR experiments as a function of disorder strength. Compared to the disorder-free parent materials, the saturation ordered moment is found to be considerably reduced. Moreover, even in weakly disordered species, the magnetically ordered state is shown to be highly inhomogeneous. The results are interpreted in terms of weakly coupled random spin chains, governed by the ``infinite randomness`` fixed point.

Magnetic short and long range order in PbFe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$

PbFe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ (PFT) belongs to the family of PbB$'_{x}$B$"_{1-x}$O$_{3}$ which have inherent chemical disorder at the B-site. Due to this disorder, a complex magnetic phase diagram is expected in the material. In this paper, we report experimental results of magnetic properties in PFT through macroscopic characterization, neutron scattering and Mössbauer spectroscopy techniques. With these results we show for the first time that PbFe$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ behaves very similar to PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, i.e, it undergoes AF transition at 153 K and has a spinglass transition at 10 K, below which the antiferromagnetism coexists with spinglass. We suggest that the mechanism which is responsible for such a non-trivial ground state can be explained by a speromagnet-like spin arrangement similar to the one proposed for PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$.

Phase Transition of the Uniaxial Disordered Ferroelectric Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$

We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic $c$-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the $<$1, 1, 0$>$ direction does not show any anomaly associated with the this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. The intensity of this scattering increases as the sample is cooled from a temperature well above the phase transition. The susceptibility associated with this diffuse scattering follows well the anomaly of the dielectric permittivity of SBN-61. Below T$_\mathrm{c}$ the shape of this scattering is consistent with the scattering expected from ferroelectric domain walls. Our results suggest that despite apparent chemical disorder SBN-61 behaves as a classic order-disorder uniaxial ferroelectric with critical fluctuations in the range $<10^{-11}$ s.

Pressure-induced quantum critical and multicritical points in a frustrated spin liquid

The quantum spin liquid compound (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (PHCC) is studied by $μ$SR under hydrostatic pressures up to 23.6 kbar. At low temperatures, pressure-induced incommensurate magnetic order is detected beyond a quantum critical point at $P_c\sim4.3$ kbar. An additional phase transition to a different ordered phase is observed at $P_1\sim 13.4$ kbar. The data indicate that the high-pressure phase may be a commensurate one. The established $(P-T)$ phase diagram reveals the corresponding pressure-induced multicritical point at $P_1$, $T_1=2.0$ K.

The tunable quantum spin ladder Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{(1-x)}$Br$_{x}$)$_{2}$

We report magnetic, specific heat and ESR measurements on a series of $S=1/2$ spin ladder compounds Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{(1-x)}$Br$_{x}$)$_{2}$. Down to $T=2$ K all the observables can be described by the spin ladder model with about 1% of $S=1/2$ impurities in the background, which are present even in a nominally pure Cu(Qnx)Cl$_{2}$ and Cu(Qnx)Br$_{2}$, for the whole range of $0\leq x\leq1$. We extract ladder exchange constants $J_{l}(x)$ and $J_{r}(x)$ as well as the gap value $Δ(x)$ by comparing the experimental data to quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. As the ESR measurements show the $g$-factor of impurities to be precisely equal to $g$-factor of the ladder spins, we suppose the impurities to be the consequence of structural defects resulting in a broken ladder ends.

Attractive Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid in a Quantum Spin Ladder

We present NMR measurements of a strong-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound (C7H10N)2CuBr4 under magnetic fields up to 15 T in the temperature range from 1.2 K down to 50 mK. From the splitting of NMR lines we determine the phase boundary and the order parameter of the low-temperature (3-dimensional) long-range-ordered phase. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger regime above the ordered phase, NMR relaxation reflects characteristic power-law decay of spin correlation functions as 1/T1 T^(1/2K-1), which allows us to determine the interaction parameter K as a function of field. We find that field-dependent K varies within the 1<K<2 range which signifies attractive interaction between the spinless fermions in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

Comment on "Field-driven phase transitions in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet"

In a recent publication [M. B. Stone et al., New Journal of Physics 9, 31 (2007)] a "Renormalized Classical 2D" (RC) phase has been reported in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet PHCC. Its key signature is a sharp cusp-like feature in the magnetic susceptibility which appears below the critical field of magnetic ordering indicated by specific heat anomaly and emergence of a Bragg peak. Here we present experimental data which shows that regardless of experimental geometry, the specific heat and susceptibility anomalies in PHCC both coincide with the onset of true long range order. This leaves no room for any additional intermediate "RC" phase.

Criticality in a disordered quantum antiferromagnet by neutron diffraction

Field-induced magnetic ordering in the structurally disordered quantum magnets Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=8$% and 13%, is studied by means of neutron diffraction. The order parameter critical exponent is found to be very close to its value $β=0.5$ expected for magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation in the absence of disorder. This result applies to temperatures down to 40 mK, and a 1 T range in magnetic field. The crossover exponent is found to be $ϕ\sim 0.4$, for temperature ranges as small as 300 mK. Possible reasons for a discrepancy with recent numerical simulations and bulk measurements are discussed.

Field-concentration phase diagram of a quantum spin liquid with bond defects

The magnetic susceptibility of the gapped quantum spin liquid compound (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ and its chemically disordered derivatives (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)$_6$ are systematically studied in magnetic fields of up to 45 T, as a function of Br concentration. The corresponding field-temperature and field-concentration phase diagrams are determined. Measurements on the disorder-free parent compound are not fully consistent with previously published results by other authors [PRL{\bf 96}, 257203 (2006)]. The effect of Br/Cl substitution on the magnetic properties is superficially similar to that of finite temperature. However, important differences are identified and discussed with reference to the previously studied magnetic excitation spectra.

Impact of strong disorder on the static magnetic properties of the spin-chain compound BaCu2SiGeO7

The disordered quasi-1D magnet BaCu2SiGeO7 is considered as one of the best physical realizations of the random Heisenberg chain model, which features an irregular distribution of the exchange parameters and whose ground state is predicted to be the scarcely investigated random-singlet state (RSS). Based on extensive 29Si NMR and magnetization studies of BaCu2SiGeO7, combined with numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain remarkable quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of the random Heisenberg chain model and strong indications for the formation of a random-singlet state at low temperatures in this compound. As a local probe, NMR is a well-adapted technique for studying the magnetism of disordered systems. In this case it also reveals an additional local transverse staggered field (LTSF), which affects the low-temperature properties of the RSS. The proposed model Hamiltonian satisfactorily accounts for the temperature dependence of the NMR line shapes.

Magnetic structure of the frustrated S=1/2 chain magnet LiCu2O2 doped with nonmagnetic Zn

We present the results of magnetization, ESR and NMR measurements on single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu2O2 doped with nonmagnetic Zn^2+. As shown by the x-ray techniques the crystals of Li(Cu{1-x}Zn{x})2O2 with x<0.12 are single-phase, whereas for higher Zn concentrations the samples were polyphase. ESR spectra for all monophase samples (0<= x<0.12) can be explained within the model of a planar spin structure with a uniaxial type anisotropy. The NMR spectra of the highly doped single crystal sample Li(Cu0.9Zn0.1)2O2 can be described in the frame of a planar spin glass like magnetic structure with short range spiral correlations in the crystal (ab)-planes with strongest exchange bonds. The value of magnetic moments of Cu^2+ ions in this structure is close to value obtained for undoped crystals: (0.8 +- 0.1) mu_B.

Magnetic-field induced multiferroicity in a quantum critical frustrated spin liquid

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to check for the onset of polar order in the quasi one-dimensional quantum spin system Sul-Cu2Cl4 when passing from the spin-liquid state into the ordered spiral phase in an external magnetic field. Microscopic Coexistence of Antiferromagnetic and Spin-Glass States

The disordered antiferromagnet \pfn (\pfns) is investigated in a wide temperature range by combining Mössbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction experiments. It is demonstrated that the magnetic ground state is a {\it microscopic} coexistence of antiferromagnetic and a spin-glass orders. Spectrum of a magnetized strong-leg quantum spin ladder

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the spin excitation spectrum of the Heisenberg $S=1/2$ ladder material (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ in its entirety, both in the gapped spin-liquid and the magnetic field induced Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regimes. A fundamental change of the spin dynamics is observed between these two regimes. Spin pseudogap in Ni-doped SrCuO2

The S=1/2 spin chain material SrCuO2 doped with 1% S=1 Ni-impurities is studied by inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, the spectrum shows a pseudogap Δ~ 8 meV, absent in the parent compound, and not related to any structural phase transition. The pseudogap is shown to be a generic feature of quantum spin chains with dilute defects. A simple model based on this idea quantitatively accounts for the exprimental data measured in the temperature range 2-300 K, and allows to represent the momentum-integrated dynamic structure factor in a universal scaling form.

Symmetric and asymmetric excitations of a strong-leg quantum spin ladder

The zero-field excitation spectrum of the strong-leg spin ladder (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (DIMPY) is studied with a neutron time-of-flight technique. The spectrum is decomposed into its symmetric and asymmetric parts with respect to the rung momentum and compared with theoretical results obtained by the density matrix renormalization group method. Additionally, the calculated dynamical correlations are shown for a wide range of rung and leg coupling ratios in order to point out the evolution of arising excitations, as e.g. of the two-magnon bound state from the strong to the weak coupling limit.

Asymmetric Thermal Lineshape Broadening in a Gapped 3-Dimensional Antiferromagnet - Evidence for Strong Correlations at Finite Temperature

It is widely believed that magnetic excitations become increasingly incoherent as temperature is raised due to random collisions which limit their lifetime. This picture is based on spin-wave calculations for gapless magnets in 2 and 3 dimensions and is observed experimentally as a symmetric Lorentzian broadening in energy. Here, we investigate a three-dimensional dimer antiferromagnet and find unexpectedly that the broadening is asymmetric - indicating that far from thermal decoherence, the excitations behave collectively like a strongly correlated gas. This result suggests that a temperature activated coherent state of quasi-particles is not confined to special cases like the highly dimerized spin-1/2 chain but is found generally in dimerized antiferromagnets of all dimensionalities and perhaps gapped magnets in general.

Bond Randomness Induced Magnon Decoherence in a Spin-1/2 Ladder Compound

We have used a combination of neutron resonant spin-echo and triple-axis spectroscopies to determine the energy and linewidth of the magnon resonance in IPA-Cu(Cl$_{0.95}$Br$_{0.05}$)$_3$, a model spin-1/2 ladder antiferromagnet where Br substitution induces bond randomness. We find that the bond defects induce a blueshift, $δΔ$, and broadening, $δΓ$, of the magnon gap excitation compared to the pure compound. At temperatures exceeding the energy scale of the inter-ladder exchange interactions, $δΔ$ and $δΓ$ are temperature independent within the experimental error, in agreement with Matthiessen's rule according to which magnon-defect scattering yields a temperature independent contribution to the magnon mean free path. Upon cooling, $δΔ$ and $δΓ$ become temperature dependent and saturate at values lower than those observed at higher temperature, consistent with the crossover from one-dimensional to two-dimensional spin correlations with decreasing temperature previously observed in pure IPA-CuCl$_3$. These results indicate limitations in the applicability of Matthiessen's rule for magnon scattering in low-dimensional magnets.

Dimensional crossover of spin chains in a transverse staggered field: an NMR study

Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain materials are known to substantially alter their static and dynamic properties when experiencing an effective transverse staggered field originating from the varying local environment of the individual spins. We present a temperature-, angular- and field-dependent 29Si NMR study of the model compound BaCu2Si2O7. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of the divergent low-temperature transverse susceptibility, predicted by theory for spin chains in coexisting longitudinal and transverse staggered fields. Our analysis first employs a finite-temperature "Density Matrix Renormalization Group" (DMRG) study of the relevant one-dimensional Hamiltonian. Next we compare our numerical with the presently known analytical results. With an analysis based on crystal symmetries we show how the anisotropic contribution to the sample magnetization is experimentally accessible even below the ordering temperature, in spite of its competition with the collinear order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase. The modification of static and dynamic properties of the system due to the presence of a local transverse staggered field (LTSF) acting on the one-dimensional spin array are argued to cause the unusual spin reorientation transitions observed in BaCu2Si2O7. On the basis of a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis, we discuss aspects of competing spin structures in the presence of magnetic order and the enhanced transverse susceptibility.

Excitations in a quantum spin liquid with random bonds

We present results of inelastic neutron scattering study on two bond disordered quasi twodimensional quantum magnets (C$_4$H$_12$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_6$ with x=0.035 and 0.075. We observe the increase of spin gap, reduction of magnon bandwidth and a decrease of magnon lifetimes compared to x=0 sample. Additional magnon damping is observed at higher energies away from zone center which is found to follow the density of single particle states.

Field-induced criticality in a gapped quantum magnet with bond disorder

Neutron diffraction and calorimetric measurements are used to study the field-induced quantum phase transition in piperazinium-Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_6$ ($x=0$, x=3.5% and x=7.5%), a prototypical quantum antiferromagnet with random bonds. The critical indexes $ϕ$ and $β$ are determined. The findings contradict some original predictions for Bose Glass based on the assumption $z=d$, but are consistent with recent theoretical results implying $z<d$. Inelastic neutron experiments reveal that disorder has a profound effect on the lowest-energy magnetic gap excitation in the system.

Magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated S=1/2 chain magnet LiCu_2O_2

We present the results of the magnetization and dielectric constant measurements on untwinned single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu_2O_2. Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.

Ordering in weakly coupled random singlet spin chains

The influence of bond randomness on long range magnetic ordering in the weakly coupled S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain materials Cu(py)2(Cl1-xBrx)2 is studied by muon spin rotation and bulk measurements. Disorder is found to have a strong effect on the ordering temperature TN, and an even stronger one on the saturation magnetization m0, but considerably more so in the effectively lower-dimensional Br-rich materials. The observed behavior is attributed to Random Singlet ground states of individual spin chains, but remains in contradiction with chain mean field theory predictions. In this context, we discuss the possibility of a universal distribution of ordered moments in the weakly coupled Random Singlet chains model.

Phase Diagram of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Helimagnet Ba2CuGe2O7 in Canted Magnetic Fields

The evolution of different magnetic structures of non-centrosymmetric Ba2CuGe2O7 is systematically studied as function of the orientation of the magnetic field H. Neutron diffraction in combination with measurements of magnetization and specific heat show a virtually identical behaviour of the phase diagram of Ba2CuGe2O7 for H confined in both the (1,0,0) and (1,1,0) plane. The existence of a recently proposed incommensurate double-k AF-cone phase is confirmed in a narrow range for H close to the tetragonal c-axis. For large angles enclosed by H and the c-axis a complexely distorted non-sinusoidal magnetic structure has recently been observed. We show that its critical field Hc systematically increases for larger canting. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat finally indicate the existence of an incommensurate/commensurate transition for H /sim 9 T applied in the basal (a,b)-plane and agree with a non-planar, distorted cycloidal magnetic structure.

Probing the connections between superconductivity, stripe order, and structure in La1.905Ba0.095Cu1-yZnyO4

The superconducting system La2-xBaxCuO4 is known to show a minimum in the transition temperature, Tc, at x = 1/8 where maximal stripe order is pinned by the anisotropy within the CuO2 planes that occurs in the low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) crystal structure. For x = 0.095, where Tc reaches its maximum value of 32 K, there is a roughly coincident structural transition to a phase that is very close to LTT. Here we present a neutron scattering study of the structural transition, and demonstrate how features of it correlate with anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and thermoelectric power. We also present measurements on a crystal with 1% Zn substituted for Cu, which reduces Tc to 17 K, enhances the spin stripe order, but has much less effect on the structural transition. We make the case that the structural transition correlates with a reduction of the Josephson coupling between the CuO2 layers, which interrupts the growth of the superconducting order. We also discuss evidence for two-dimensional superconducting fluctuations in the normal state, analyze the effective magnetic moment per Zn impurity, and consider the significance of the anomalous thermopower often reported in the stripe-ordered phase.

Comment on "Transition from Bose glass to a condensate of triplons in Tl$_{1-x}$K$_x$CuCl$_3$"

We argue that the interpretation of the calorimetric data for disordered quantum antiferromagnets Tl$_{1-x}$K$_x$CuCl$_3$ in terms of Bose Glass physics by F. Yamada {\it et al.} in [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 83}, 020409(R) (2011)] is not unambiguous. A consistent analysis shows no difference in the crossover critical index for the disorder-free TlCuCl$_3$ and its disordered derivatives. Furthermore, we question the very existence of a proper field-induced thermodynamic phase transition in Tl$_{1-x}$K$_x$CuCl$_3$.

Disorder instability of the magnon condensate in a frustrated spin ladder

The effect of disorder is studied on the field-induced quantum phase transition in the frustrated spin-ladder compound H8C4SO2Cu2(Cl[1-x]Brx)4 using bulk magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The parent material (x=0) is a quantum spin liquid, which in applied fields is known to form a magnon condensate with long-range helimagnetic order. We show that bond randomness introduced by a chemical substitution on the non-magnetic halogene site destroys this phase transition at very low concentrations, already for x=0.01. The extreme fragility of the magnon condensate is attributed to random frustration in the incommensurate state.

Distribution of NMR relaxations in a random Heisenberg chain

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the 29Si spin-lattice relaxation time T1 were used to probe the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain compound BaCu2(Si(1-x)Gex)2O7. Remarkable differences between the pure (x = 0) and the fully random (x = 0.5) case are observed, indicating that randomness generates a distribution of local magnetic relaxations. This distribution, which is reflected in a stretched exponential NMR relaxation, exhibits a progressive broadening with decreasing temperature, caused by a growing inequivalence of magnetic sites. Compelling independent evidence for the influence of randomness is also obtained from magnetization data and Monte Carlo calculations. These results suggest the formation of random-singlet states in this class of materials, as previously predicted by theory.

Double-k phase of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnet Ba2CuGe2O7

Neutron diffraction is used to re-investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal antiferromagnet Ba2CuGe2O7. A novel incommensurate double-k magnetic phase is detected near the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. This phase is stable only for magnetic field closely aligned with the 4-fold symmetry axis. The results emphasize the inadequacy of existing theoretical models for this unique material, and points to additional terms in the Hamiltonian or lattice effects.

The values of anisotropy parameters and the orientations of the anisotropy axes are determined by accurate measurements of the angular, frequency-field and temperature dependences of the resonance absorption. The properties of a spin-gap magnet in the vicinity of critical field are discussed in terms of sublevel splittings and g-factor anisotropy.

Low Temperature Dynamics of Magnons in a Spin-1/2 Ladder Compound

We have used a combination of neutron resonant spin-echo and triple-axis spectroscopies to determine the energy, fine structure, and linewidth of the magnon resonance in the model spin-1/2 ladder antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl_3 at temperatures T << Delta_0 /k_B, where Delta_0 is the spin gap at T=0. In this low-temperature regime we find that the results deviate substantially from the predictions of the non-linear sigma model proposed as a description of magnon excitations in one-dimensional quantum magnets and attribute these deviations to real-space and spin-space anisotropies in the spin Hamiltonian as well as scattering of magnon excitations from a dilute density of impurities. These effects are generic to experimental realizations of one-dimensional quantum magnets.

Spectral and thermodynamic properties of a strong-leg quantum spin ladder

The strong-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder system (C7H10N)2CuBr4 is investigated using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations, inelastic neutron scattering, and bulk magneto-thermodynamic measurements. Measurements showed qualitative differences compared to the strong-rung case. A long-lived two-triplon bound state is confirmed to persist across most of the Brillouin zone in zero field. In applied fields, in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid phase, elementary excitations are attractive, rather than repulsive. In the presence of weak inter-ladder interactions, the strong-leg system is considerably more prone to 3-dimensional ordering.

Evidence of a magnetic Bose glass in IPA-Cu(Cl0.95Br0.05)3 from neutron diffraction

We report the single crystal study of the bulk magnetization and neutron scattering measurements on a quantum S=1/2 spin ladders system IPA-Cu(Cl0.95Br0.05)3with quenched disorder. In zero field, the disordered spin liquid phase is preserved as in pure IPA-CuCl3. Due to the bond randomness, a different Bose glass phase was directly observed in Hc<H<H', which separates the spin liquid phase from the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensation phase. The observed finite value of boson compressibility dM/dH and lack of field-induced three-dimensional long range order are consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Magnetic field effect on Fe-induced short-range magnetic correlation and electrical conductivity in Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$

We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $δ=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation. Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. The latter picture appears to be more relevant to the present results.

Modes of magnetic resonance of S=1 dimer chain compound NTENP

The spin dynamics of a quasi one dimensional $S=1$ bond alternating spin-gap antiferromagnet Ni(C$_9$H$_{24}$N$_4$)NO$_2$(ClO$_4$) (abbreviated as NTENP) is studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. Five modes of ESR transitions are observed and identified: transitions between singlet ground state and excited triplet states, three modes of transitions between spin sublevels of collective triplet states and antiferromagnetic resonance absorption in the field-induced antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Singlet-triplet and intra-triplet modes demonstrate a doublet structure which is due to two maxima in the density of magnon states in the low-frequency range. A joint analysis of the observed spectra and other experimental results allows to test the applicability of the fermionic and bosonic models. We conclude that the fermionic approach is more appropriate for the particular case of NTENP.

Stripe order in superconducting La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) for 0.095 <= x <= 0.155

The correlations between stripe order, superconductivity, and crystal structure in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) single crystals have been studied by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction as well as static magnetization measurements. The derived phase diagram shows that charge stripe order (CO) coexists with bulk superconductivity in a broad range of doping around x=1/8, although the CO order parameter falls off quickly for x<>1/8. Except for x=0.155, the onset of CO always coincides with the transition between the orthorhombic and the tetragonal low temperature structures. The CO transition evolves from a sharp drop at low x to a more gradual transition at higher x, eventually falling below the structural phase boundary for optimum doping. With respect to the interlayer CO correlations, we find no qualitative change of the stripe stacking order as a function of doping, and in-plane and out-of-plane correlations disappear simultaneously at the transition. Similarly to the CO, the spin stripe order (SO) is also most pronounced at x=1/8. Truly static SO sets in below the CO and coincides with the first appearance of in-plane superconducting correlations at temperatures significantly above the bulk transition to superconductivity (SC). Indications that bulk SC causes a reduction of the spin or charge stripe order could not be identified. We argue that CO is the dominant order that is compatible with SC pairing but competes with SC phase coherence. Comparing our results with data from the literature, we find good agreement if all results are plotted as a function of x' instead of the nominal x, where x' represents an estimate of the actual Ba content, extracted from the doping dependence of the structural transition between the orthorhombic phase and the tetragonal high-temperature phase.

Excitations from a chiral magnetized state of a frustrated quantum spin liquid

We study excitations in weakly interacting pairs of quantum spin ladders coupled through geometrically frustrated bonds. The ground state is a disordered spin liquid, that at high fields is replaced by an ordered chiral helimagnetic phase. The spectra observed by high-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the prototype compound Sul-Cu2Cl4 are qualitatively different from those in the previously studied frustration-free spin liquids. Beyond the critical field Hc=3.7 T, the soft mode that drives the quantum phase transition spawns two separate excitations: a gapless Goldstone mode and a massive magnon. Additional massive quasiparticles are clearly visible below Hc, but are destroyed in the ordered phase. In their place one observes a sharply bound excitation continuum.

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2Dioxane.2H2O.CuCl2: metal-organic compound with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chains

A novel organometallic compound 2Dioxane.CuCl2.2H2O has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field inelastic neutron scattering have also been used to study its magnetic properties. It turns out that this material is a weakly coupled one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain system with chain direction along the crystallographic c axis and the nearest-neighbor intra-chain exchange constant J=0.85(4) meV. Co-existing chiral and collinear phases in a distorted triangular antiferromagnet

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order. Scaling of dynamic spin correlations in BaCu2SiGeO7

The magnetic dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional S = 1/2 chain system BaCu2(Si0.5Ge0.5)2O7 is studied in a wide range of energy transfers and temperatures. Contrary to previous erroneous reports [T. Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 077206 (2004)], the scaling properties observed in the range 0.5-25 meV are found to be fully consistent with expectations for a Luttinger spin liquid. At higher energies, a breakdown of scaling laws is observed and attributed to lattice effects. The results are complementary to those found in literature for other S = 1/2-chain compounds, such as KCuF3 and Cu-benzoate.

Magnetic order and spin-waves in the quasi-1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet ${\bf BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering were used to study the ordered phase of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet ${\rm BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$. The previously proposed model for the low-temperature magnetic structure was confirmed. Coexistence of Haldane gap excitations and long-range order in R_2BaNiO_5 ($R$=rare earth)

$R_2BaNiO_5$ ($R=$ rare earth) quasi-1-D antiferromagnets are structurally equivalent to the well-studied 1-D S=1 Haldane-gap compound Y_2BaNiO_5. Unlike the Y-nickelate though, these materials undergo 3-D magnetic ordering at finite temperatures. Recent inelastic neutron scattering studies of Pr_2BaNiO_5 and (Nd_{x}Y_{1-x})_2BaNiO_5 revealed purely 1-dimensional gap excitations that propagate exclusively on the Ni-chains and are strikingly similar to Haldane gap modes in Y_2BaNiO_5. In the ordered phase these excitations survive and actually coexist with conventional spin waves. Below $T_{N}$ the gap energy increases and scales as the square of the ordered moment on the Ni sites. The results suggest that the Haldane singlet ground state of the Ni-chains is not fully destroyed by Néel ordering.
