Controllable emergent spatial spin modulation in Sr2IrO4 by in situ shear strain

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that inducing competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations represents a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square lattice planes in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Sr2IrO4 under in situ shear strain. This translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain activated anisotropic interaction which is at the 4th order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low dimensional magnets.

Low-temperature transport properties of intermetallic compound HoAgGe with kagome spin ice state

We study the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity and thermal conductivity of intermetallic HoAgGe single crystals at low temperatures and in magnetic fields along the $a$ and $c$ axis, while the electric and heat currents are along the $c$ axis. The magnetization curves show a series of metamagnetic transitions and small hysteresis at low field for $B \parallel a$, and a weak metamagnetic transition for $B \parallel c$, respectively. Both the magnetic susceptibility and $ρ(T)$ curve show anomalies at the antiferromagnetic transition ($T\rm_N \sim$ 11.3 K) and spin reorientation transition ($\sim$ 7 K). In zero field and at very low temperatures, the electrons are found to be the main heat carriers. For $B \parallel a$, the $ρ(B)$ curves display large and positive transverse magnetoresistance (MR) with extraordinary field dependence between $B^2$ and $B$-linear, accompanied with anomalies at the metamagnetic transitions and low-field hysteresis; meanwhile, the $κ(B)$ mainly decrease with increasing field and display some anomalies at the metamagnetic transitions. For $B \parallel c$, there is weak and negative longitudinal MR while the $κ(B)$ show rather strong field dependence, indicating the role of phonon heat transport.

Magnetic order and spin liquid behavior in [Mo3+]^{11+} triangular magnets

Molecular magnets based on [Mo$_3$]$^{11+}$ units with one unpaired electron per trimer have attracted recent interest due to the identification of quantum spin liquid candidacy in some family members. Here, we present comprehensive measurements on polycrystalline samples of ZnScMo$_3$O$_8$, MgScMo$_3$O$_8$, and Na$_3$Sc$_2$Mo$_5$O$_{16}$ with the same Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ magnetic building blocks. The crystal structures are characterized with x-ray or neutron powder diffraction and the magnetic ground states are determined by performing ac and dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction, and $μ$SR measurements. Our work indicates that ZnScMo$_3$O$_8$ and MgScMo$_3$O$_8$ have ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperatures of 18.5 K and 11.9 K, ordered ground states with net moments (low-moment ferromagnetism or canted antiferromagnetism), and zero field ordering temperatures of $T_c =$ 6 K and $<$ 2 K respectively. On the other hand, Na$_3$Sc$_2$Mo$_5$O$_{16}$ hosts a dynamical magnetic ground state with no evidence for magnetic ordering or spin freezing down to 20 mK despite an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of -36.2 K, and therefore is a candidate for quantum spin liquid behavior. By comparing the present results to past work on the same family of materials, we construct a phase diagram which illustrates that the magnetic ground states of these Mo-based molecular magnets are very sensitive to small changes in the nearest neighbor Mo-Mo distance.

Extremely low-energy collective modes in a quasi-one-dimensional system

We have investigated the quasiparticle dynamics and collective excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional material ZrTe$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our time-domain results reveal two coherent oscillations having extremely low energies of $\hbarω_1\sim$0.33 meV (0.08 THz) and $\hbarω_2\sim$1.9 meV (0.45 THz), which are softened as the temperature approaches two different critical temperatures ($\sim$54 K and $\sim$135 K). We attribute these two collective excitations to the amplitude mode of charge density wave instabilities in ZrTe$_5$ with tremendously small nesting wave vectors. Furthermore, scattering with the $\hbarω_2$ mode may result in a peculiar quasiparticle decay process with a timescale of $\sim$1-2 ps below the transition temperature $T^*$ ($\sim$135 K). Our findings provide pivotal information for studying the fluctuating order parameters and their associated quasiparticle dynamics in various low-dimensional topological systems and other materials.

High-field magnetic structure of the triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2

The magnetic H - T phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 with an equilateral triangular lattice structure is studied with 87Rb NMR and neutron diffraction techniques. This combination of experimental techniques allows us to determine the ordered components of the magnetic moments on the Fe3+ ions within various high-field phases - the Y, UUD, V, and fan structures, stabilized in the compound by the in-plane magnetic field. It is also established that the transition from the V to the fan phase is of first-order, whereas the transition from the fan phase to the polarized paramagnetic phase is continuous. An analysis of the NMR spectra shows that the high-field fan phase of RbFe(MoO4)2 can be successfully described by a periodic commensurate oscillation of the magnetic moments around the field direction in each Fe layer combined with an incommensurate modulation of the magnetic structure perpendicular to the layers.

Non-magnetic ion site disorder effects on the quantum magnetism of a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet

With the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba3CoSb2O9, a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba2.87Sr0.13CoSb2O9 with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba2+ ion sites. The results show that Ba2.87Sr0.13CoSb2O9 exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120-degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24μB/Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for both H // ab-plane and H // c-axis. For H // ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up-up-down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba3CoSb2O9, which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Absence of long-range order in an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Comprehensive Control of Metamagnetic Transition of Antiferromagnetic Mott Insulator Sr2IrO4 by in-situ Anisotropic Strain

Metamagnetism in antiferromagnets exhibits distinct critical behaviors and dynamics when invoking spin reversal and rotation. Here we show a 0.05% anisotropic strain suffices to in-situ modulate the metamagnetic critical field of the Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 by over 50%, enabling electrical switching of the transition. Resonant x-ray scattering and model simulation reveal that the transition is completely tuned from the spin-flop to spin-flip type as the strain introduces C4-symmetry-breaking magnetic anisotropy. Simultaneous transport study indicates the metamagnetic responses are reflected in the large elasto- and magnetoconductance, highlighting the active charge degree of freedom in the spin-orbit-coupled Mott state and its potential for spin-electronics.

Domain wall patterning and giant response functions in ferrimagnetic spinels

The manipulation of mesoscale domain wall phenomena has emerged as a powerful strategy for designing ferroelectric responses in functional devices, but its full potential has not yet been realized in the field of magnetism. We show that mechanically strained samples of Mn$_3$O$_4$ and MnV$_2$O$_4$ exhibit a stripe-like patterning of the bulk magnetization below known magnetostructural transitions, similar to the structural domains reported in ferroelectric materials. Building off our previous magnetic force microscopy data, we use small angle neutron scattering to show that these patterns extend to the bulk, and demonstrate an ability to manipulate the domain walls via applied magnetic field and mechanical stress. We then connect these domains back to the anomalously large magnetoelastic and magnetodielectric response functions reported in these materials, directly correlating local and macroscopic measurements on the same crystals.

Extremely slow non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in classical spin ice

We report on the non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in the classical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ detected by means of high-resolution magnetostriction measurements. Significant lattice changes occur at the transition from the kagome-ice to the saturated-ice phase, visible in the longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction. A hysteresis opening at temperatures below 0.6 K suggests a first-order transition between the kagome and saturated state. Extremely slow lattice relaxations, triggered by changes of the magnetic field, were observed. These lattice-relaxation effects result from non-equilibrium monopole formation or annihilation processes. The relaxation times extracted from our experiment are in good agreement with theoretical predictions with decay constants of the order of $10{^4}$ s at 0.3 K.

Possible itinerant excitations and quantum spin state transitions in the effective spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$

The most fascinating feature of certain two-dimensional (2D) gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) is that their spinon excitations behave like the fermionic carriers of a paramagnetic metal. The spinon Fermi surface is then expected to produce a linear increase of the thermal conductivity with temperature that should manifest via a residual value ($κ_0/T$) in the zero-temperature limit. However, this linear in T behavior has been reported for very few QSL candidates. Here, we studied the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of an effective spin-1/2 triangular QSL candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which has an antiferromagnetic order at very low temperature ($T_N \sim$ 148 mK), and observed a finite $κ_0/T$ extrapolated from the data above $T_N$. Moreover, while approaching zero temperature, it exhibits series of quantum spin state transitions with applied field along the $c$ axis. These observations indicate that Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ possibly behaves as a gapless QSL with itinerant spin excitations above $T_N$ and its strong quantum spin fluctuations persist below $T_N$.

Realization of the orbital-selective Mott state at the molecular level in Ba$_3$LaRu$_2$O$_9$

Molecular magnets based on heavy transition metals have recently attracted significant interest in the quest for novel magnetic properties. For systems with an odd number of valence electrons per molecule, high or low molecular spin states are typically expected in the double exchange or quasi-molecular orbital limits respectively. In this work, we use bulk characterization, muon spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering to identify a rare intermediate spin-3/2 per dimer state in the 6H-perovskite Ba$_3$LaRu$_2$O$_9$ that cannot be understood in a double exchange or quasi-molecular orbital picture and instead arises from orbital-selective Mott insulating behavior at the molecular level. Our measurements are also indicative of collinear stripe magnetic order below $T_N$ = 26(1) K for these molecular spin-3/2 degrees-of-freedom, which is consistent with expectations for an ideal triangular lattice with significant next nearest neighbor in-plane exchange. Finally, we present neutron diffraction and Raman scattering data under applied pressure that reveal low-lying structural and spin state transitions at modest pressures P $\le$ 1 GPa, which highlights the delicate balance between competing energy scales in this system.

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of nearly-ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 iridium halides

Heavy transition metal magnets with $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 electronic ground states have attracted recent interest due to their penchant for hosting new classes of quantum spin liquids and superconductors. Unfortunately, model systems with ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 states are scarce due to the importance of non-cubic local distortions in most candidate materials. In this work, we identify a family of iridium halide systems [i.e. K$_2$IrCl$_6$, K$_2$IrBr$_6$, (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$, and Na$_2$IrCl$_6 \cdotp $ 6(H$_2$O)] with Ir$^{4+}$ electronic ground states in extremely close proximity to the ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 limit, despite a variation in the low-temperature global crystal structures. We also find ordered magnetic ground states for the three anhydrous systems, with single crystal neutron diffraction on K$_2$IrBr$_6$ revealing Type-I antiferromagnetism. This spin configuration is consistent with expectations for significant Kitaev exchange in a face-centered-cubic magnet.

Unraveling the Topological Phase of ZrTe$_5$ via Magneto-infrared Spectroscopy

For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ZrTe$_5$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking direction, along with an additional set of optical transitions from a band gap away from the Brillouin zone center. Our work identifies ZrTe5 as a strong TI at liquid helium temperature and provides a new perspective in determining band inversion in layered topological materials.

Canted Magnetic Ground State of Quarter-Doped Manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er)

Polycrystalline samples of the quarter-doped manganites $R_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were studied by X-ray diffraction and AC/DC susceptibility measurements. All five samples are orthorhombic and exhibit similar magnetic properties: enhanced ferromagnetism below $T_1$ ($\sim80$ K) and a spin glass (SG) state below $T_{SG}$ ($\sim30$ K). With increasing $R^{3+}$ ionic size, both $T_1$ and $T_{SG}$ generally increase. The single crystal neutron diffraction results on Tb$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ revealed that the SG state is mainly composed of a short-range ordered version of a novel canted (i.e. noncollinear) antiferromagnetic spin state. Furthermore, calculations based on the double exchange model for quarter-doped manganites reveal that this new magnetic phase provides a transition state between the ferromagnetic state and the theoretically predicted spin-orthogonal stripe phase.

Fragile singlet ground state magnetism in pyrochlore osmates R2Os2O7 (R=Y and Ho)

The singlet ground state magnetism in pyrochlore osmates Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ is studied by DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements. Despite the expected non-magnetic singlet in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit for Os$^{4+}$ ($5d^4$), Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a spin-glass (SG) ground state below 4 K with weak magnetism, suggesting possible proximity to a quantum phase transition between the non-magnetic state in the strong SOC limit and the magnetic state in the strong superexchange limit. Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ has the same structural distortion as occurs in Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$. However, the Os sublattice in Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ shows long-range magnetic ordering below 36\,K. The sharp difference of the magnetic ground state between Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ signals the singlet ground state magnetism in $R_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ is fragile and can be disturbed by the weak $4f-5d$ interactions.

Magnetic order and spin-orbit coupled Mott state in double perovskite (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)$_2$CuIrO$_6$

Double-perovskite oxides that contain both 3d and 5d transition metal elements have attracted growing interest as they provide a model system to study the interplay of strong electron interaction and large spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we report on experimental and theoretical studies of the magnetic and electronic properties of double-perovskites (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)$_2$CuIrO$_6$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3). The undoped La$_2$CuIrO$_6$ undergoes a magnetic phase transition from paramagnetism to antiferromagnetism at T$_N$ $\sim$ 74 K and exhibits a weak ferromagnetic behavior below $T_C$ $\sim$ 52 K. Two-dimensional magnetism that was observed in many other Cu-based double-perovskites is absent in our samples, which may be due to the existence of weak Cu-Ir exchange interaction. First-principle density-functional theory (DFT) calculations show canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in both Cu$^{2+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ sublattices, which gives rise to weak ferromagnetism. Electronic structure calculations suggest that La$_2$CuIrO$_6$ is an SOC-driven Mott insulator with an energy gap of $\sim$ 0.3 eV. Sr-doping decreases the magnetic ordering temperatures ($T_N$ and $T_C$) and suppresses the electrical resistivity. The high temperatures resistivity can be fitted using a variable-range-hopping model, consistent with the existence of disorders in these double-pervoskite compounds.

Magnetic phases of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet on triangular lattice CuCrO$_2$

We have carried out $^{63,65}$Cu NMR spectra measurements in magnetic field up to about 45~T on single crystal of a multiferroic triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO$_2$. The measurements were performed for magnetic fields aligned along the crystal $c$-axis. Field and temperature evolution of the spectral shape demonstrates a number of phase transitions. It was found that the 3D magnetic ordering takes place in the low field range ($H\lesssim15$~T). At higher fields magnetic structures form within individual triangular planes whereas the spin directions of the magnetic ions from neighboring planes are not correlated. It is established that the 2D-3D transition is hysteretic in field and temperature. Lineshape analysis reveals several possible magnetic structures existing within individual planes for different phases of CuCrO$_2$. Within certain regions on the magnetic H-T phase diagram of CuCrO$_2$ a 3D magnetic ordering with tensor order parameter is expected.

Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground states in MnP

MnP, a superconductor under pressure, exhibits a ferromagnetic order below TC~290 K followed by a helical order with the spins lying in the ab plane and the helical rotation propagating along the c axis below Ts~50 K at ambient pressure. We performed single crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic ground states under pressure. Both TC and Ts are gradually suppressed with increasing pressure and the helical order disappears at ~1.2 GPa. At intermediate pressures of 1.8 and 2.0 GPa, the ferromagnetic order first develops and changes to a conical or two-phase (ferromagnetic and helical) structure with the propagation along the b axis below a characteristic temperature. At 3.8 GPa, a helical magnetic order appears below 208 K, which hosts the spins in the ac plane and the propagation along the b axis. The period of this b axis modulation is shorter than that at 1.8 GPa. Our results indicate that the magnetic phase in the vicinity of the superconducting phase may have a helical magnetic correlation along the b axis.

Quantum Oscillations at Integer and Fractional Landau Level Indices in ZrTe5

A three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal (DS) is an analogue of graphene, but with linear energy dispersion in all (three) momentum directions.3D DSs have been a fertile playground in discovering novel quantum particles, for example Weyl fermions, in solid state systems. Many 3D DSs (e.g., ZrTe5) were theoretically predicted. We report here the results from the studies of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and low temperature magneto-transport measurements in exfoliated ZrTe5 thin flakes.Several unique results were observed. First, an anomalous-Hall-effect-like behavior was observed around zero magnetic field (B).Second, a non-trivial Berry's phase of π was obtained from the Landau level fan diagram of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal resistivity. Third, the longitudinal resistivity shows linear B field dependence in the quantum limit. Most surprisingly, quantum oscillations were observed at fractional Landau level indices N = 2/3 and 2/5, demonstrating strong electron-electron interactions effects in ZrTe5.

Revisiting the ground state of CoAl$_2$O$_4$: comparison to the conventional antiferromagnet MnAl$_2$O$_4$

The A-site spinel material, CoAl2O4, is a physical realization of the frustrated diamond-lattice antiferromagnet, a model in which is predicted to contain unique incommensurate or `spin-spiral liquid' ground states. Our previous single-crystal neutron scattering study instead classified it as a `kinetically-inhibited' antiferromagnet, where the long ranged correlations of a collinear Neel ground state are blocked by the freezing of domain wall motion below a first-order phase transition at T* = 6.5 K. The current paper expands on our original results in several important ways. New elastic and inelastic neutron measurements are presented that show our initial conclusions are affected by neither the sample measured nor the instrument resolution, while measurements to temperatures as low as T = 250 mK limit the possible role being played by low-lying thermal excitations. Polarized diffuse neutron measurements confirm reports of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and diffuse streaks of scattering, but major diffuse features are explained as signatures of overlapping critical correlations between neighboring Brillouin zones. Finally, and critically, this paper presents detailed elastic and inelastic measurements of magnetic correlations in a single-crystal of MnAl2O4, which acts as an unfrustrated analogue to CoAl2O4. The unfrustrated material is shown to have a classical continuous phase transition to Neel order at T_N = 39 K, with collective spinwave excitations and Lorentzian-like critical correlations which diverge at the transition. Direct comparison between the two compounds indicates that CoAl2O4 is unique, not in the nature of high-temperature diffuse correlations, but rather in the nature of the frozen state below T*. The higher level of cation inversion in the MnAl2O4 sample indicates that this novel behavior is primarily an effect of greater next-nearest-neighbor exchange.

Static and Dynamical Properties of the Spin-1/2 Equilateral Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

We present single-crystal neutron scattering measurements of the spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. Besides confirming that the Co$^{2+}$ magnetic moments lie in the ab plane for zero magnetic field, we determine all the exchange parameters of the minimal quasi-2D spin Hamiltonian, which confirms that Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ is an almost perfect realization of the paradigmatic model of frustrated quantum magnetism. A comparison with linear and nonlinear spin-wave theory reveals that quantum fluctuations induce a strong downward renormalization of the magnon dispersion.

Statics and dynamics of the highly correlated spin ice Ho2Ge2O7

The pyrochlore Ho2Ge2O7 is a new highly correlated spin ice material. Physical property measurements including x-ray diffraction, dc susceptibility and ac susceptibility, confirm that it shares the distinctive characteristics of other known spin ices. Polarized neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample, combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) refinements, give unique information about the spin ice state in Ho2Ge2O7. RMC refinements are used to fit the powder magnetic diffuse scattering and predict the single crystal magnetic scattering of Ho2Ge2O7, demonstrating consistency with spin ice behavior.

Structural transition and orbital glass physics in near itinerant CoV2O4

The ferrimagnetic spinel $\mathrm{CoV_2O_4}$ has been a topic of intense recent interest, both as a frustrated insulator with unquenched orbital degeneracy and as a near-itinerant magnet which can be driven metallic with moderate applied pressure. Here, we report on our recent neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering measurements on powders with minimal cation site disorder. Our main new result is the identification of a weak ($\frac{Δa}{a} \sim 10^{-4}$), first order structural phase transition at $T^*$ = 90 K, the same temperature where spin canting was seen in recent single crystal measurements. This transition is characterized by a short-range distortion of oxygen octahedral positions, and inelastic data further establish a weak $Δ\sim 1.25 meV$ spin gap at low temperature. Together, these findings provide strong support for the local orbital picture and the existence of an orbital glass state at temperatures below $T^*$.

Ground state selection in XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets R$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb)

Elastic neutron scattering, ac susceptibility, and specific heat experiments on the pyrochlores Er$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Yb$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$O$_{7}$ show that both systems are antiferromagnetically ordered in the $Γ_5$ manifold. The ground state is a $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Er sample and a $ψ_{2}$ or $ψ_{3}$ phase for the Yb sample, which suggests "Order by Disorder"(ObD) physics. Furthermore, we unify the various magnetic ground states of all known R$_{2}$B$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (R = Er, Yb, B = Sn, Ti, Ge) compounds through the enlarged XY type exchange interaction $J_{\pm}$ under chemical pressure. The mechanism for this evolution is discussed in terms of the phase diagram proposed in the theoretical study [Wong et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 144402, (2013)].

High pressure floating zone growth and structural properties of ferrimagnetic quantum paraelectric BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$

High quality single crystals of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ were grown using the floating zone technique in flowing oxygen pressurized to 100 atm. Single crystal neutron diffraction was used to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ at 4 K and 295 K. At both temperatures, there exist local electric dipoles formed by the off-mirror-plane displacements of magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ ions at the bipyramidal sites. The displacement at 4 K is about half of that at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows no anomaly associated with long range polar ordering in the temperature range from 1.90-300 K. The inverse dielectric permittivity, $1/\varepsilon$, along the c-axis shows a $T^2$ temperature dependence between 10 K and 20 K, with a significantly reduced temperature dependence displayed below 10 K. Moreover, as the sample is cooled below 1.4 K there is an anomalous sharp upturn in $1/\varepsilon$. These features resemble those of classic quantum paraelectrics such as SrTiO$_3$. The presence of the upturn in $1/\varepsilon$ indicates that BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ is a critical quantum paraelectric system with Fe$^{3+}$ ions involved in both magnetic and electric dipole formation.

Low-temperature thermal conductivity of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and Yb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals

We study the low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ) of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and Yb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 14 T along the [111], [100] and [110] directions. The main experimental findings for Dy_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the low-T κ(H) isotherms exhibit not only the step-like decreases at the low-field (< 2 T) magnetic transitions but also obvious field dependencies in high fields (> 7 T); (ii) at T \le 0.5 K, the κ(H) curves show anisotropic irreversibility in low fields, that is, the κ(H) hysteresis locates at the first-order transition with H \parallel [100] and [110], while it locates between two successive transitions with H \parallel [111]; (iii) the κin the hysteresis loops for H \parallel [100] and [110] show an extremely slow relaxation with the time constant of \sim 1000 min. The main experimental findings for Yb_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the zero-field κ(T) show a kink-like decrease at the first-order transition (\sim 200 mK) with decreasing temperature; (ii) the low-T κ(H) isotherms show a decrease in low field and a large enhancement in high fields; (iii) the low-T κ(H) curves show a sharp minimum at 0.5 T for H \parallel [110] and [111]. The roles of monopole excitations, field-induced transitions, spin fluctuations and magnetoelastic coupling are discussed.

Magnon spectra and strong spin-lattice coupling in magnetically frustrated MnB2O4 (B = Mn,V): Inelastic light scattering studies

The ferrimagnetic spinels MnB2O4 (B = Mn,V) exhibit a similar series of closely spaced magnetic and structural phase transitions at low temperatures, reflecting both magnetic frustration and a strong coupling between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Careful studies of excitations in MnB2O4 (B = Mn,V), and the evolution of these excitations with temperature, are important for obtaining a microscopic description of the role that magnetic excitations and spin-lattice coupling play in the low temperature phase transitions of these materials. We report an inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of one- and two-magnon excitations in MnV2O4 and Mn3O4. We observe a pair of q=0 one-magnon modes at 74 cm^{-1} and 81 cm^{-1} in MnV2O4, which is in contrast with the single 80 cm^{-1} q=0 magnon that has been reported for MnV2O4 based on previous neutron scattering measurements and spin wave calculations. Additionally, we find that the two-magnon energy of MnV2O4 decreases ("softens") with decreasing temperature below T_{N}, which we attribute to strong coupling between magnetic and vibrational excitations near the zone boundary.

Nature of Partial Magnetic Order in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

The frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has an unusual partially-ordered magnetic structure at the lowest measurable temperatures. This structure is currently believed to involve four magnetic propagation vectors $\mathbf{k}\in \langle \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \rangle^*$ in a cubic 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure, based on analysis of magnetic diffuse-scattering data [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16, L321 (2004)]. Here, we present three pieces of evidence against the 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. First, we report single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements as a function of applied magnetic field, which are consistent with the selective field-induced population of non-cubic magnetic domains. Second, we present evidence from high-resolution powder neutron-diffraction measurements that rhombohedral strains exist within magnetic domains, which may be generated by magneto-elastic coupling only for the alternative 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. Finally, we show that the argument previously used to rule out the 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure is flawed, and demonstrate that magnetic diffuse-scattering data can actually be fitted quantitatively by a 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure in which spin fluctuations on ordered and disordered magnetic sites are strongly coupled. Our results provide an experimental foundation on which to base theoretical descriptions of partially-ordered states.

Strong competition between orbital-ordering and itinerancy in a frustrated spinel vanadate

The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scattering measurements and first-principles-guided spin models reveal that the non-collinear state at high Co doping is produced by weakened local anisotropy and enhanced Co-V spin interactions.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in CeCu$_{6-x}T_x$ ($T$ = Ag, Pd)

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($δ_1$ 0 $δ_2$) where $δ_1 \sim 0.62$, $δ_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $δ_1 \sim 0.64$, $δ_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Ground state and magnetic phase transitions of orthoferrite DyFeO_3

Low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ), as well as magnetization (M) and electric polarization (P), of multiferroic orthoferrite DyFeO_3 single crystals are studied with H \parallel c. When the crystal is cooled in zero field, M, P, and κall consistently exhibit irreversible magnetic-field dependencies. In particular, with 500 mK < T \le 2 K, all these properties show two transitions at the first run of increasing field but only the higher-field transition is present in the subsequent field sweepings. Moreover, the ultra-low-T (T < 500 mK) κ(H) shows a different irreversibility and there is only one transition when the field is swept both up and down. All the results indicate a complex low-T H-T phase diagram involving successive magnetic phase transitions of the Fe^{3+} spins. In particular, the ground state, obtained with cooling to subKelvin temperatures in zero field, is found to be an unexplored phase.

Incipient Ferromagnetism in Tb2Ge2O7: Application of Chemical Pressure to the Enigmatic Spin Liquid, Tb2Ti2O7

The origin of the spin liquid state in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has challenged experimentalists and theorists alike for nearly 20 years. To improve our understanding of the exotic magnetism in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, we have synthesized a chemical pressure analog, Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$. Germanium substitution results in a lattice contraction and enhanced exchange interactions. We have characterized the magnetic ground state of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ with specific heat, ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, and polarized neutron scattering measurements. Akin to Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, there is no long-range order in Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ down to 20 mK. The Weiss temperature of $-$19.2(1) K, which is more negative than that of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, supports the picture of stronger antiferromagnetic exchange. Polarized neutron scattering of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ reveals that at 3.5 K liquid-like correlations dominate in this system. However, below 1 K, the liquid-like correlations give way to intense short-range ferromagnetic correlations with a length scale related to the Tb-Tb nearest neighbor distance. Despite stronger antiferromagnetic exchange, the ground state of Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ has ferromagnetic character, in stark contrast to the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic order observed in Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Liquid-like correlations in single crystalline Y2Mo2O7: an unconventional spin glass

The spin glass behavior of Y2Mo2O7 has puzzled physicists for nearly three decades. Free of bulk disorder within the resolution of powder diffraction methods, it is thought that this material is a rare realization of a spin glass resulting from weak disorder such as bond disorder or local lattice distortions. Here, we report on the single crystal growth of Y2Mo2O7. Using neutron scattering, we present unique isotropic magnetic diffuse scattering arising beneath the spin glass transition despite having a well-ordered structure at the bulk level. Despite our attempts to model the diffuse scattering using a computationally exhaustive search of a class of simple spin Hamiltonians, we were unable to replicate the experimentally observed energy-integrated (diffuse) neutron scattering. A T^2-temperature dependence in the heat capacity and density functional theory calculations hint at significant frozen degeneracy in both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom resulting from spin-orbital coupling (Kugel-Khomskii type) and random fluctuations in the Mo environment at the local level.

Magnetic and Structural Phase Transitions in the Spinel Compound Fe1+xCr2-xO4

Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system Fe1+xCr2-xO4(0.0<=x<=1.0). The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, Fe2+-Fe3+ hopping, and disorder among Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ ions.

Magnetic order and spin dynamics in La2O2Fe2OSe2 probed by 57Fe-Moessbauer, 139La-NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy

We present a detailed local probe study of the magnetic order in the oxychalcogenide La2O2Fe2OSe2 utilizing 57Fe Moessbauer, 139La NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. This system can be regarded as an insulating reference system of the Fe arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. From the combination of the local probe techniques we identify a non-collinear magnetic structure similar to Sr2F2Fe2OS2. The analysis of the magnetic order parameter yields an ordering temperature TN = 90.1 K and a critical exponent of beta = 0.133, which is close to the 2D Ising universality class as reported in the related oxychalcogenide family.

Magnetic ordering induced by interladder coupling in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

We present specific-heat and neutron-scattering results for the \emph{S}=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet (dimethylammonium)(3,5-dimethylpyridinium)CuBr$_4$. The material orders magnetically at \emph{T}$_N$=1.99(2)\,K, and magnetic excitations are accompanied by an energy gap of 0.30(2) meV due to spin anisotropy. The system is best described as coupled two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with the leg exchange $J_{\rm leg}$=0.60(2)~meV, rung exchange $J_{\rm rung}$=0.64(9)~meV, interladder exchange $J_{\rm int}$=0.19(2)~meV, and an interaction-anisotropy parameter $λ$=0.93(2), according to inelastic neutron-scattering measurements. In contrast to most spin ladders reported to date, the material is a rare example in which the interladder coupling is very near the critical value required to drive the system to a Néel-ordered phase without an assistance of a magnetic field.

Magnetic structure and domain conversion of quasi-2D frustrated antiferromagnet CuCrO2 probed by NMR

We have carried out 63,65Cu NMR spectra measurements in magnetic field up to about 15.5 T on single crystal of a multiferroic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CuCrO2. The measurements were performed for perpendicular and parallel orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the c-axis of the crystal, and the detailed angle dependence of the spectra on the magnetic field direction within ab-plane was studied. The shape of the spectra can be well described in the model of spiral spin structure proposed by recent neutron diffraction experiments. When field is rotated perpendicular to crystal c-axis, we observed, directly for the first time, a remarkable reorientation of spin plane simultaneous with rotation of the incommensurate wavevector by quantitatively deducing the conversion of less energetically favorable domain to a more favorable one. At high enough fields parallel to c-axis, the data are consistent with either a field-induced commensurate spiral magnetic structure or an incommensurate spiral magnetic structure with a disorder in the c direction, suggesting that high fields may have influence on interplanar ordering.

Magnetoelectric coupling tuned by competing anisotropies in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$TiO$_3$

A flop of electric polarization from $P$$\parallel$$c$ ($P_c$) to $P$$\parallel$$a$ ($P_a$) is observed in MnTiO$_3$ as a spin flop transition is triggered by a $c$-axis magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$=7 T. The critical magnetic field $H_{\|c}$ for $P_a$ is significantly reduced in Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$TiO$_3$ (x=0.33). $P_a$ and $P_c$ have been observed with both $H_{\|c}$ and $H_{\|a}$. Neutron diffraction measurements revealed similar magnetic arrangements for the two compositions where the ordered spins couple antiferromagnetically with their nearest intra- and inter-planar neighbors. In the x=0.33 system, the uniaxial and planar anisotropies of Mn$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ compete and give rise to a spin reorientation transition at $T_R$. A magnetic field, $H_{\|c}$, aligns the spins along $c$ for $T_R$$<$$T$$<$$T_N$. The rotation of the collinear spins away from the $c$-axis for $T$$<$$T_R$ alters the magnetic point symmetry and gives rise to a new ME susceptibility tensor form. Such linear ME response provides satisfactory explanation for the behavior of the field-induced electric polarization in both compositions. As the Ni content increases to x=0.5 and 0.68, the ME effect disappears as a new magnetic phase emerges.

Magnons and a two-component spin gap in FeV2O4

The spinel vanadates have become a model family for exploring orbital order on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice, and recent debate has focused on the symmetry of local crystal fields at the cation sites. Here, we present neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$, a recent example of a ferrimagnetic spinel vanadate which is available in single crystal form. We report the existence of two emergent magnon modes at low temperatures, which draw strong parallels with the closely related material, $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. We were able to reproduce the essential elements of both the magnetic ordering pattern and the dispersion of the inelastic modes with semi- classical spin wave calculations, using a minimal model that implies a sizeable single-ion anisotropy on the vanadium sublattice. Taking into account the direction of ordered spins, we associate this anisotropy with the large trigonal distortion of $\mathrm{VO_6}$ octahedra, previously observed via neutron powder diffraction measurements. We further report on the spin gap, which is an order-of-magnitude larger than that observed in $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$. By looking at the overall temperature dependence, we were able to show that the gap magnitude is largely associated with the ferro-orbital order known to exist on the iron sublattice, but the contribution to the gap from the vanadium sublattice is in fact comparable to what is reported in the Mn compound. This reinforces the conclusion that the spin canting transition is associated with the ordering of vanadium orbitals in this system, and closer analysis indicates closely related physics underlying orbital transitions in $\mathrm{FeV_2O_4}$ and $\mathrm{MnV_2O_4}$.

Quantum phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

The magnetic phases of the ideal spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ are identified and studied using $^{135,137}$Ba nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in magnetic fields ranging to 30T, oriented parallel and near perpendicular to the crystallographic $ab$-plane. For both directions, the saturation field is approximately 33T. Notably, the NMR spectra provide microscopic evidence for the stabilization of an up-up-down spin configuration for in-plane fields, giving rise to an one-third magnetization plateau ($M_\text{sat}/3$), as well as for a higher field phase transition near to $\sim (3/5)M_\text{sat}$ for both field orientations. Phase transitions are signaled by the evolution of the NMR spectra, and in some cases through spin-lattice relaxation measurements. The results are compared with expectations obtained from a semi-classical energy density modeling, in which quantum effects are incorporated by effective interactions extracted from the spin-wave analysis of the two-dimensional model. The interlayer coupling also plays a significant role in the outcome. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results is achieved, except for the case of fields approaching the saturation value applied along the c-axis.

Tuning the magnetic exchange via a control of orbital hybridization in Cr2(Te1-xWx)O6

We report the complex magnetic phase diagram and electronic structure of Cr2(Te1-xWx)O6 systems. While compounds with different x values possess the same crystal structure, they display different magnetic structures below and above xc = 0.7, where both the transition temperature TN and sublattice magnetization (Ms) reach a minimum. Unlike many known cases where magnetic interactions are controlled either by injection of charge carriers or by structural distortion induced via chemical doping, in the present case it is achieved by tuning the orbital hybridization between Cr 3d and O 2p orbitals through W 5d states. The result is supported by ab-initio electronic structure calculations. Through this concept, we introduce a new approach to tune magnetic and electronic properties via chemical doping.

Absence of structural transition in TM0.5IrTe2 (TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni)

TM-doped IrTe2(TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) compounds were synthesized by solid state reaction. Single crystal x-ray diffraction experiments indicate that part of the doped TM ions (TM=Fe, Co, and Ni) substitute for Ir, and the rest intercalate into the octahedral interstitial sites located in between IrTe2 layers. Due to the lattice mismatch between MnTe2 and IrTe2, Mn has limited solubility in IrTe2 lattice. The trigonal structure is stable in the whole temperature range 1.80<T<300K for all doped compositions. No long range magnetic order or superconductivity was observed in any doped compositions above 1.80K. A spin glass behavior below 10K was observed in Fe-doped IrTe2 from the temperature dependence of magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The low temperature specific heat data suggest the electron density of states is enhanced in Fe- and Co-doped compositions but reduced in Ni-doped IrTe2. With the 3d transition metal doping the trigonal a-lattice parameters increases but the c-lattice parameter decreases. Detailed analysis of the single crystal x-ray diffraction data shows that interlayer Te-Te distance increases despite a reduced c-lattice. The importance of the Te-Te, Te-Ir, and Ir-Ir bonding is discussed.

An irreversible magnetic-field dependence of low-temperature heat transport of spin-ice compound Dy_2Ti_2O_7 in a [111] field

We study the low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ) of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 along and perpendicular to the (111) plane and under the magnetic field along the [111] direction. Besides the step-like decreases of κat the field-induced transitions from the spin-ice state to the kagomé-ice state and then to the polarized state, an abnormal phenomenon is that the κ(H) isotherms show a clear irreversibility at very low temperatures upon sweeping magnetic field up and down. This phenomenon surprisingly has no correspondence with the well-known magnetization hysteresis. Possible origins for this irreversibility are discussed; in particular, a pinning effect of magnetic monopoles in spin ice compound by the weak disorders is proposed.

Competition between the structural phase transition and superconductivity in Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ as revealed by pressure effects

Pressure-dependent transport measurements of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ are reported. With increasing pressure, the structural phase transition at high temperatures is enhanced while its superconducting transition at low temperatures is suppressed. These pressure effects make Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ distinct from other studied $T$X$_2$ systems exhibiting a charge density wave (CDW) state, in which pressure usually suppresses the CDW state and enhances the superconducting state. The results reveal that the emergence of superconductivity competes with the stabilization of the low temperature monoclinic phase in Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$.

Magnetic Field Induced Transition in Vanadium Spinels

We study vanadium spinels $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Cd, Mg) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. A jump in magnetization at $μ_0 H \approx$ 40 T is observed in the single-crystal MgV$_2$O$_4$, indicating a field induced quantum phase transition between two distinct magnetic orders. In the multiferroic CdV$_2$O$_4$, the field-induced transition is accompanied by a suppression of the electric polarization. By modeling the magnetic properties in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels, we show that both features of the field-induced transition can be successfully explained by including the effects of the local trigonal crystal field.

Magnetic Phase Transition in the Low Dimensional Compound BaMn2Si2O7

The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ chain carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

Magnetically originated phonon-glass-like behavior in Tb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystal

We report a study on the thermal conductivity (κ) of Tb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals at low temperatures. It is found that in zero field this material has an extremely low phonon thermal conductivity in a broad temperature range. The mean free path of phonons is even smaller than that of amorphous materials and is 3--4 orders of magnitude smaller than the sample size at 0.3 K. The strong spin fluctuation of the spin-liquid state is discussed to be the reason of the strong phonon scattering. The magnetic-field dependence of κand comparison with Y_2Ti_2O_7 and TbYTi_2O_7 confirm the magnetic origin of this phonon-glass-like behavior.

Structural and magnetic properties in the quantum S=1/2 dimer systems Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 with site disorder

We report a comprehensive study of dc susceptibility, specific heat, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ba3(Cr1-xVx)2O8 samples, where x=0, 0.06, 0.15, and 0.53. A Jahn-Teller structure transition occurs for x=0, 0.06, and 0.15 samples and the transition temperature is reduced upon vanadium substitution from 70(2) K at x=0 to 60(2) K at x=0.06 and 0.15. The structure becomes less distorted as x increases and such transition disappears at x=0.53. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum indicates that the singlet ground state remains unaltered and spin gap energy Δ=1.3(1) meV is identical within the instrument resolution for all x. In addition, the dispersion bandwidth W decreases with increase of x. At x=0.53, W is reduced to 1.4(1) meV from 2.0(1) meV at x=0.

High superconducting anisotropy and weak vortex pinning in Co doped LaFeAsO

Here, we present an electrical transport study in single crystals of LaFe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$AsO ($T_c \simeq 9.1$ K) under high magnetic fields. In contrast to most of the previously reported Fe based superconductors, and despite its relatively low $T_c$, LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO shows a superconducting anisotropy which is comparable to those seen for instance in the cuprates or $γ_H = H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c} = m_c/m_{ab} \simeq 9$, where $m_c/m_{ab}$ is the effective mass anisotropy. Although, in the present case and as in all Fe based superconductors, $γ\rightarrow 1$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. Under the application of an external field, we also observe a remarkable broadening of the superconducting transition particularly for fields applied along the inter-planar direction. Both observations indicate that the low dimensionality of LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO is likely to lead to a more complex vortex phase-diagram when compared to the other Fe arsenides and consequently, to a pronounced dissipation associated with the movement of vortices in a possible vortex liquid phase. When compared to, for instance, F-doped compounds pertaining to same family, we obtain rather small activation energies for the motion of vortices. This suggests that the disorder introduced by doping LaFeAsO with F is more effective in pinning the vortices than alloying it with Co.

Magnetic order and ice rules in the multiferroic spinel FeV2O4

We present a neutron diffraction study of FeV2O4, which is rare in exhibiting spin and orbital degrees of freedom on both cation sublattices of the spinel structure. Our data confirm the existence of three structural phase transitions previously identified with x-ray powder diffraction, and reveal that the lower two transitions are associated with sequential collinear and canted ferrimagnetic transitions involving both cation sites. Through consideration of local crystal and spin symmetry, we further conclude that Fe2+ cations are ferro-orbitally ordered below 135K and V3+ orbitals order at 60K in accordance with predictions for vanadium spinels with large trigonal distortions and strong spin-orbit coupling. Intriguingly, the direction of ordered vanadium spins at low temperatures obey `ice rules' more commonly associated with the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore systems.

Magnetic transitions and magnetodielectric effect in the antiferromagnet SrNdFeO$_4$

We investigated the magnetic phase diagram of single crystals of SrNdFeO$_{4}$ by measuring the magnetic properties, the specific heat and the dielectric permittivity. The system has two magnetically active ions, Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$. The Fe$^{3+}$ spins are antiferromagnetically ordered below 360 K with the moments lying in the ab-plane, and undergo a reorientation transition at about 35-37 K to an antiferromagnetic order with the moments along the c-axis. A short-range, antiferromagnetic ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ along the c-axis was attributed to the reorientation of Fe$^{3+}$ followed by a long-range ordering at lower temperature [S. Oyama {\it et al.} J. Phys.: Condens. Matter. {\bf 16}, 1823 (2004)]. At low temperatures and magnetic fields above 8 T, the Nd$^{3+}$ moments are completely spin-polarized. The dielectric permittivity also shows anomalies associated with spin configuration changes, indicating that this compound has considerable coupling between spin and lattice. A possible magnetic structure is proposed to explain the results.

Magneto-electric effect in NdCrTiO5

We have measured the dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current of orthorhombic (space group $Pbam$) NdCrTiO$_5$ polycrystalline samples. The dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current show features associated with ferroelectric transitions at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{\text{N}}$ = 21 K). The effect of magnetic fields is to enhance the features almost linearly up to the maximum measured field (7 T) with a spontaneous polarization value of $\sim 3.5 μ$C/m$^2$. Paramagnetic ground state with field-induced partial order in Nd_3Ga_5SiO_{14} probed by low-temperature heat transport

We study the low-temperature heat transport of Nd_3Ga_5SiO_{14}, which is a spin-liquid candidate, to probe the nature of ground state and the effect of magnetic field on the magnetic properties. The thermal conductivity (κ) shows a purely phononic transport in zero field. The external magnetic field along the c axis induces a dip-like behavior of κ(H), which can be attributed to a simple paramagnetic scattering on phonons. However, the magnetic field along the ab plane induces another step-like decrease of κ. This kind of κ(H) behavior is discussed to be related to a field-induced partial order, which yields low-energy magnetic excitations that significantly scatter phonons. These results point to a paramagnetic ground state that partial magnetic order can be induced by magnetic field along the ab plane, which is also signified by the low-T specific heat data.

AC Susceptibility and Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Spin Dynamics in n Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$: A Geometrically Frustrated Lattice

We report ac susceptibility and high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on the geometrically frustrated compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ with the Néel temperature $T_N=27 K$. An unusually large frequency-dependence of ac susceptibility in the temperature range of 20 - 100 K reveals a spin-glass-like behavior, signalling the presence of frustration related slow magnetic fluctuations. ESR experiments show a multi-step magnetic and spin chirality ordering process. For temperatures above 30 K, the weak temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth $ΔH_{pp}\propto T^{-p}$ with $p=0.8$ evidences the development of short-range correlated spin clusters. The critical broadening with $p =1.8$, persisting down to 14 K, indicates the coexistence of the short-range ordered spin clusters within a helically ordered state. Below 9.5 K, the anomalously large decrease of the linewidth reveals the stabilization of a long-range ordered state with one chirality.

Disorder-dependent superconducting phase-diagram at high magnetic fields in Fe$_{1 + y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ ($x \sim 0.4$)

We compare the superconducting phase-diagram under high magnetic fields (up to $H = 45$ T) of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ single crystals originally grown by the Bridgman-Stockbarger (BRST) technique, which were annealed to display narrow superconducting transitions and the optimal transition temperature $T_c \gtrsim 14$ K, with the diagram for samples of similar stoichiometry grown by the traveling-solvent floating-zone technique as well as with the phase-diagram reported for crystals grown by a self-flux method. We find that the so-annealed samples tend to display higher ratios $H_{c2}/T_c$, particularly for fields applied along the inter-planar direction, where the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ exhibits a pronounced downward curvature followed by saturation at lower temperatures $T$. This last observation is consistent with previous studies indicating that this system is Pauli limited. An analysis of our $H_{c2}(T)$ data using a multiband theory suggests the emergence of the Farrel-Fulde-Larkin-Ovchnikov state at low temperatures. A detailed structural x-ray analysis, reveals no impurity phases but an appreciable degree of mosaicity in as-grown BRST single-crystals which remains unaffected by the annealing process. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis showed that the annealed samples have a more homogeneous stoichiometric distribution of both Fe and Se with virtually the same content of interstitial Fe as the non-annealed ones. Thus, we conclude that stoichiometric disorder, in contrast to structural disorder, is detrimental to the superconducting phase diagram of this series under high magnetic fields. Finally, a scaling analysis of the fluctuation conductivity in the superconducting critical regime, suggests that the superconducting fluctuations have a two-dimensional character in this system.

High pressure sequence of Ba_3NiSb_2O_9 structural phases: new $S = 1$ quantum spin-liquids based on Ni^{2+}

By using a high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) technique, the antiferromagnetically ordered ($T_N$ = 13.5 K) 6H-A phase of Ba$_3$NiSb$_2$O$_9$ was transformed into two new gapless quantum spin liquid(QSL) candidates with S=1 (Ni$^{2+}$) moments: the 6H-B phase with a Ni$^{2+}$-triangular lattice and the 3C-phase with a Ni$^{2+}$-three-dimensional (3D) edge-shared tetrahedral lattice. Both compounds show no magnetic order down to 0.35 K despite Curie-Weiss temperatures $θ_{CW}$ of -75.5 K (6H-B) and -182.5 K (3C), respectively. Below $\sim 25$ K the magnetic susceptibility of the 6H-B phase saturates to a constant value $χ_0 = 0.013 $ emu/mol which is followed below 7 K, by a linear-temperature dependent magnetic specific heat ($C_M$) displaying a giant coefficient $γ$ = 168 mJ/mol-K$^2$. Both observations suggest the development of a Fermi-liquid like ground state characterized by a Wilson ratio of 5.6 in this insulating material. For the 3C phase, the $C_M \propto T^2$ behavior indicates a unique S=1, 3D QSL ground-state.

Thermal Expansion Coefficients of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ Crystals from 10 K to 270 K

Lattice constant of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ crystals is determined by X-ray powder diffraction measurement in a wide temperature range. Linear thermal expansion coefficients ($α$) of the crystals are extracted, and considerable anisotropy between $α_\parallel$ and $α_\perp$ is observed. The low temperature values of $α$ can be fit well by the Debye model, while an anomalous behavior at above 150 K is evidenced and explained. Grüneisen parameters of the materials are also estimated at room temperature.

Rapidly fluctuating orbital occupancy above the orbital ordering transition in spin-gap compounds

Several spin systems with low dimensionality develop a spin-dimer phase within a molecular orbital below TS, competing with long-range antiferromagnetic order. Very often, preferential orbital occupancy and ordering are the actual driving force for dimerization, as in the so-called orbitally-driven spin-Peierls compounds (MgTi2O4, CuIr2S4, La4Ru2O10, NaTiSi2O6, etc.). Through a microscopic analysis of the thermal conductivity k (T) in La4Ru2O10, we show that the orbital occupancy fluctuates rapidly above TS, resulting in an orbital-liquid state. The strong orbital-lattice coupling introduces dynamic bond-length fluctuations that scatter the phonons to produce a k (T) proportional to T (i.e. glass-like) above TS. This phonon-glass to phonon-crystal transition is shown to occur in other spin-dimer systems, like NaTiSi2O6, pointing to a general phenomenon.

Surface Reconstruction of Hexagonal Y-doped HoMnO3 and LuMnO3 studied using low-energy electron diffraction

We have investigated the (0001) surfaces of several hexagonal manganite perovskites by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) in order to determine if the surface periodicity is different from that of the bulk materials. These LEED studies were conducted using near-normal incidence geometry with a low energy electron microscope (LEEM)/LEED apparatus from room temperature to 1200 degrees Celsius and with an electron energy in the range of 15-50 eV. Diffraction patterns showed features of bulk-terminated periodicity as well as a 2\times2 surface reconstruction. Possible origins for this surface reconstruction structure are discussed and comparisons are made with surface studies of other complex oxides.

Magnetic field induced quantum phase transition of the $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnet $K_2NaCrO_8$

The magnetic properties of alkali-metal peroxychromate K$_2$NaCrO$_8$ are governed by the $S = 1/2$ pentavalent chromium cation, Cr$^{5+}$. Specific heat, magnetocalorimetry, ac magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, and inelastic neutron scattering data have been acquired over a wide range of temperature, down to 60 mK, and magnetic field, up to 18 T. The magnetic interactions are quasi-two-dimensional prior to long-range ordering, where $T_N = 1.66$ K in $H = 0$. In the $T \to 0$ limit, the magnetic field tuned antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition suggests a critical field $H_c = 7.270$ T and a critical exponent $α= 0.481 \pm 0.004$. The neutron data indicate the magnetic interactions may extend over intra-planar nearest-neighbors and inter-planar next-nearest-neighbor spins.

Itinerant spin excitations near the hidden order transition in URu2Si2

By means of neutron scattering we show that the high-temperature precursor to the hidden order state of the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits heavily damped incommensurate paramagnons whose strong energy dispersion is very similar to that of the long-lived longitudinal f-spin excitations that appear below T$_{0}$. Since the underlying local f-exchange is preserved we expect only the f-d interactions to change across the phase transition and to cause the paramagnetic damping. The damping exhibits single-ion behavior independent of wave vector and vanishes below the hidden order transition. We suggest that this arises from a transition from valence fluctuations to a hybridized f-d state below T$_{0}$. Here we present evidence that the itinerant excitations, like those in chromium, are due to Fermi surface nesting of hole and electron pockets so that the hidden order phase likely originates from a Fermi-surface instability. We identify wave vectors that span nested regions of a band calculation and that match the neutron spin crossover from incommensurate to commensurate on approach to the hidden order phase.

AC susceptibility and $^{51}$V NMR study of MnV$_2$O$_4$

We report $^{51}$V zero-field NMR of manganese vanadate spinel of MnV$_2$O$_4$, together with both ac and dc magnetization measurements. The field and temperature dependence of ac susceptibilities show a reentrant-spin-glass-like behavior below the ferrimagnetic(FEM) ordering temperature. The zero-field NMR spectrum consists of multiple lines ranging from 240 MHz to 320 MHz. Its temperature dependence reveals that the ground state is given by the simultaneous formation of a long-range FEM order and a short-range order component. We attribute the spin-glass-like anomalies to freezing and fluctuations of the short-range ordered state caused by the competition between spin and orbital ordering of the V site.
