On the sense of convergence in the dyadic representation theorem

The dyadic representation of any singular integral operator, as an average of dyadic model operators, has found many applications. While for many purposes it is enough to have such a representation for a "suitable class" of test functions, we show that, under quite general assumptions (essentially minimal ones to make sense of the formula), the representation is actually valid for all pairs $(f,g)\in L^p(\mathbb R^d)\times L^{p'}(\mathbb R^d)$, not just test functions.

Causal sparse domination of Beurling maximal regularity operators

We prove boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators acting in Banach functions spaces on domains, defined by the $L_1$ Carleson functional and $L_q$ ($1<q<\infty$) Whitney averages. For such bounds to hold, we assume that the operator maps towards the boundary of the domain. We obtain the Carleson estimates by proving a pointwise domination of the operator, by sparse operators with a causal structure. The work is motivated by maximal regularity estimates for elliptic PDEs and is related to one-sided weighted estimates for singular integrals.

Dyadic representation theorem using smooth wavelets with compact support

The representation of a general Calderón--Zygmund operator in terms of dyadic Haar shift operators first appeared as a tool to prove the $A_2$ theorem, and it has found a number of other applications. In this paper we prove a new dyadic representation theorem by using smooth compactly supported wavelets in place of Haar functions. A key advantage of this is that we achieve a faster decay of the expansion when the kernel of the general Calderón--Zygmund operator has additional smoothness.

Exotic Calderón-Zygmund operators

We study singular integral operators with kernels that are more singular than standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels, but less singular than bi-parameter product Calderón-Zygmund kernels. These kernels arise as restrictions to two dimensions of certain three-dimensional kernels adapted to so-called Zygmund dilations, which is part of our motivation for studying these objects. We make the case that such kernels can, in many ways, be seen as part of the extended realm of standard kernels by proving that they satisfy both a T1 theorem and commutator estimates in a form reminiscent of the corresponding results for standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels. However, we show that one-parameter weighted estimates, in general, fail.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces

Let $T$ be a linear operator that, for some $p_1\in(1,\infty)$, is bounded on $L^{p_1}(\tilde w)$ for all $\tilde w\in A_{p_1}(\mathbb R^d)$ and in addition compact on $L^{p_1}(w_1)$ for some $w_1\in A_{p_1}(\mathbb R^d)$. Then $T$ is bounded and compact on $L^p(w)$ for all $p\in(1,\infty)$ and all $w\in A_p(\mathbb R^d)$. This "compact version" of Rubio de Francia's celebrated weighted extrapolation theorem follows from a combination of results in the interpolation and extrapolation theory of weighted spaces on the one hand, and of compact operators on abstract spaces on the other hand. Moreover, generalizations of this extrapolation of compactness are obtained for operators that are bounded from one space to a different one ("off-diagonal estimates") or only in a limited range of the $L^p$ scale. As applications, we easily recover several recent results on the weighted compactness of commutators of singular integral operators, fractional integrals and pseudo-differential operators, and obtain new results about the weighted compactness of commutators of Bochner-Riesz multipliers.

Multiresolution analysis and Zygmund dilations

Zygmund dilations are a group of dilations lying in between the standard product theory and the one-parameter setting - in $\mathbb{R}^3 = \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$ they are the dilations $(x_1, x_2, x_3) \mapsto (δ_1 x_1, δ_2 x_2, δ_1 δ_2 x_3)$. The dyadic multiresolution analysis and the related dyadic-probabilistic methods have been very impactful in the modern product singular integral theory. However, the multiresolution analysis has not been understood in the Zygmund dilation setting or in other modified product space settings. In this paper we develop this missing dyadic multiresolution analysis of Zygmund type, and justify its usefulness by bounding, on weighted spaces, a general class of singular integrals that are invariant under Zygmund dilations. We provide novel examples of Zygmund $A_p$ weights and Zygmund kernels showcasing the optimality of our kernel assumptions for weighted estimates.

The $L^p$-to-$L^q$ Compactness of Commutators with $p>q$

Let $1<q<p<\infty$, $\frac1r:=\frac1q-\frac1p$, and $T$ be a non-degenerate Calderón--Zygmund operator. We show that the commutator $[b,T]$ is compact from $L^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ to $L^q({\mathbb R}^n)$ if and only if the symbol $b=a+c$ with $a\in L^r({\mathbb R}^n)$ and $c$ being any constant. Since both the corresponding Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator and the corresponding Calderón--Zygmund maximal operator are not bounded from $L^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ to $L^q({\mathbb R}^n)$, we take the full advantage of the compact support of the approximation element in $C_{\rm c}^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, which seems to be redundant for many corresponding estimates when $p\leq q$ but to be crucial when $p>q$. We also extend the results to the multilinear case.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces: Bilinear operators

In a previous paper, we obtained several "compact versions" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem, which allowed us to extrapolate the compactness of linear operators from just one space to the full range of weighted Lebesgue spaces, where these operators are bounded. In this paper, we study the extrapolation of compactness for bilinear operators in terms of bilinear Muckenhoupt weights. As applications, we easily recover and improve earlier results on the weighted compactness of commutators of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators, bilinear fractional integrals and bilinear Fourier multipliers. More general versions of these results are recently due to Cao, Olivo and Yabuta (arXiv:2011.13191), whose approach depends on developing weighted versions of the Fréchet--Kolmogorov criterion of compactness, whereas we avoid this by relying on "softer" tools, which might have an independent interest in view of further extensions of the method.

An operator-valued T(1) theorem for symmetric singular integrals in UMD spaces

The natural BMO (bounded mean oscillation) conditions suggested by scalar-valued results are known to be insufficient for the boundedness of operator-valued paraproducts. Accordingly, the boundedness of operator-valued singular integrals has only been available under versions of the classical ``$T(1)\in BMO$'' assumptions that are not easily checkable. Recently, Hong, Liu and Mei (J. Funct. Anal. 2020) observed that the situation improves remarkably for singular integrals with a symmetry assumption, so that a classical $T(1)$ criterion still guarantees their $L^2$-boundedness on Hilbert space -valued functions. Here, these results are extended to general UMD (unconditional martingale differences) spaces with the same natural BMO condition for symmetrised paraproducts, and requiring in addition only the usual replacement of uniform bounds by $R$-bounds in the case of general singular integrals. In particular, under these assumptions, we obtain boundedness results on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces for all $1<p<\infty$, without the need to replace the domain or the target by a related non-commutative Hardy space as in the results of Hong et al. for $p\neq 2$.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces II: Off-diagonal and limited range estimates

In a previous paper by one of us, a "compact version" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem was proved, which allows one to extrapolate the compactness of an operator from just one space to the full range of weighted spaces, where this operator is bounded. In this paper, we obtain generalizations of this extrapolation of compactness for operators that are bounded from one space to a different one ("off-diagonal estimates") or only in a limited range of the $L^p$ scale. As applications, we easily recover recent results on the weighted compactness of commutators of fractional integrals and pseudo-differential operators, and obtain new results about the weighted compactness of Bochner--Riesz multipliers.

The local Tb theorem with rough test functions

We prove a local $Tb$ theorem under close to minimal (up to certain `buffering') integrability assumptions, conjectured by S. Hofmann (El Escorial, 2008): Every cube is assumed to support two non-degenerate functions $b^1_Q\in L^p$ and $b^2_Q\in L^q$ such that $1_{2Q}Tb^1_Q\in L^{q'}$ and $1_{2Q}T^*b^2_Q\in L^{p'}$, with appropriate uniformity and scaling of the norms. This is sufficient for the $L^2$-boundedness of the Calderon-Zygmund operator $T$, for any $p,q\in(1,\infty)$, a result previously unknown for simultaneously small values of $p$ and $q$. We obtain this as a corollary of a local $Tb$ theorem for the maximal truncations $T_{\#}$ and $(T^*)_{\#}$: for the $L^2$-boundedness of $T$, it suffices that $1_Q T_{\#}b^1_Q$ and $1_Q (T^*)_{\#}b^2_Q$ be uniformly in $L^0$. The proof builds on the technique of suppressed operators from the quantitative Vitushkin conjecture due to Nazarov-Treil-Volberg.

Bounded variation approximation of L_p dyadic martingales and solutions to elliptic equations

We prove continuity and surjectivity of the trace map onto $L_p$, from a space of functions of locally bounded variation, defined by the Carleson functional. The extension map is constructed through a stopping time argument. This extends earlier work by Varopoulos in the BMO case, related to the Corona theorem. We also prove $L_p$ Carleson approximability results for solutions to elliptic non-smooth divergence form equations, which generalize results in the case $p=\infty$ by Hofmann, Kenig, Mayboroda and Pipher.

Heat flow and quantitative differentiation

For every Banach space $(Y,\|\cdot\|_Y)$ that admits an equivalent uniformly convex norm we prove that there exists $c=c(Y)\in (0,\infty)$ with the following property. Suppose that $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and that $X$ is an $n$-dimensional normed space with unit ball $B_X$. Then for every $1$-Lipschitz function $f:B_X\to Y$ and for every $\varepsilon\in (0,1/2]$ there exists a radius $r\ge\exp(-1/\varepsilon^{cn})$, a point $x\in B_X$ with $x+rB_X\subset B_X$, and an affine mapping $Λ:X\to Y$ such that $\|f(y)-Λ(y)\|_Y\le \varepsilon r$ for every $y\in x+rB_X$.

The $L(\log L)^ε$ endpoint estimate for maximal singular integral operators

We prove in this paper the following estimate for the maximal operator $T^*$ associated to the singular integral operator $T$: $ \|T^*f\|_{L^{1,\infty}(w)} \lesssim \frac{1}ε \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} |f(x)| M_{L(\log L)^ε} (w)(x)dx$, for $w\geq 0, 0<ε\leq 1.$ This follows from the sharp $L^p$ estimate $ \|T^*f \|_{ L^{p}(w) } \lesssim p' (\frac{1}δ)^{1/p'} \|f \|_{L^{p}(M_{ L(\log L)^{p-1+δ}} (w))}$, for $1<p<\infty, w\geq 0, 0<δ\leq 1. $ As as a consequence we deduce that $ \|T^*f\|_{L^{1,\infty}(w)} \lesssim [w]_{A_{1}} \log(e+ [w]_{A_{\infty}}) \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} |f| w dx, $ extending the endpoint results obtained in [LOP] and [HP] to maximal singular integrals. Another consequence is a quantitative two weight bump estimate.

Weak A_\infty weights and weak Reverse Hölder property in a space of homogeneous type

In the Euclidean setting, the Fujii-Wilson-type $A_\infty$ weights satisfy a Reverse Hölder Inequality (RHI) but in spaces of homogeneous type the best known result has been that $A_\infty$ weights satisfy only a weak Reverse Hölder Inequality. In this paper, we compliment the results of Hytönen, Pérez and Rela and show that there exist both $A_\infty$ weights that do not satisfy an RHI and a genuinely weaker weight class that still satisfies a weak RHI. We also show that all the weights that satisfy a weak RHI have a self-improving property but the self-improving property of the strong Reverse Hölder weights fails in a general space of homogeneous type. We prove most of these purely non-dyadic results using convenient dyadic systems and techniques.

Almost Lipschitz-continuous wavelets in metric spaces via a new randomization of dyadic cubes

In any quasi-metric space of homogeneous type, Auscher and Hytönen recently gave a construction of orthonormal wavelets with Hölder-continuity exponent $η>0$. However, even in a metric space, their exponent is in general quite small. In this paper, we show that the Hölder-exponent can be taken arbitrarily close to 1 in a metric space. We do so by revisiting and improving the underlying construction of random dyadic cubes, which also has other applications.

Pisier's inequality revisited

Given a Banach space $X$, for $n\in \mathbb N$ and $p\in (1,\infty)$ we investigate the smallest constant $\mathfrak P\in (0,\infty)$ for which every $f_1,...,f_n:{-1,1}^n\to X$ satisfy \int_{{-1,1}^n}\Bigg|\sum_{j=1}^n \partial_jf_j(\varepsilon)\Bigg|^pdμ(\varepsilon) \leq \mathfrak{P}^p\int_{{-1,1}^n}\int_{{-1,1}^n}\Bigg\|\sum_{j=1}^n \d_jΔf_j(\varepsilon)\Bigg\|^pdμ(\varepsilon) dμ(δ), where $μ$ is the uniform probability measure on the discrete hypercube ${-1,1}^n$ and ${\partial_j}_{j=1}^n$ and $Δ=\sum_{j=1}^n\partial_j$ are the hypercube partial derivatives and the hypercube Laplacian, respectively. Denoting this constant by $\mathfrak{P}_p^n(X)$, we show that $\mathfrak{P}_p^n(X)\le \sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{k}$ for every Banach space $(X,|\cdot|)$. This extends the classical Pisier inequality, which corresponds to the special case $f_j=Δ^{-1}\partial_j f$ for some $f:{-1,1}^n\to X$. We show that $\sup_{n\in \N}\mathfrak{P}_p^n(X)<\infty$ if either the dual $X^*$ is a $\mathrm{UMD}^+$ Banach space, or for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we have $X=[H,Y]_θ$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space and $Y$ is an arbitrary Banach space. It follows that $\sup_{n\in \N}\mathfrak{P}_p^n(X)<\infty$ if $X$ is a Banach lattice of finite cotype.

Orthonormal bases of regular wavelets in spaces of homogeneous type

Adapting the recently developed randomized dyadic structures, we introduce the notion of spline function in geometrically doubling quasi-metric spaces. Such functions have interpolation and reproducing properties as the linear splines in Euclidean spaces. They also have Hölder regularity. This is used to build an orthonormal basis of Hölder-continuous wavelets with exponential decay in any space of homogeneous type. As in the classical theory, wavelet bases provide a universal Calderón reproducing formula to study and develop function space theory and singular integrals. We discuss the examples of $L^p$ spaces, BMO and apply this to a proof of the T(1) theorem. As no extra condition {(like 'reverse doubling', 'small boundary' of balls, etc.)} on the space of homogeneous type is required, our results extend a long line of works on the subject.

Sharp Reverse Hölder property for A_\infty weights on spaces of homogeneous type

In this article we present a new proof of a sharp Reverse Hölder Inequality for $A_\infty$ weights that is valid in the context of spaces of homogeneous type. Then we derive two applications: a precise open property of Muckenhoupt classes and, as a consequence of this last result, we obtain a simple proof of a sharp weighted bound for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function involving $A_\infty$ constants: |M|_{L^p(w)} \leq c (\frac{1}{p-1} [w]_{A_p}[σ]_{A_\infty})^{1/p}, where $1<p<\infty$, $σ=w^{\frac{1}{1-p}}$ and $c$ depends only on the doubling constant of the measure $μ$ and the geometric constant $κ$ of the quasimetric.

The Hardy Space $H^1$ on Non-homogeneous Metric Spaces

Let $({\mathcal X}, d, μ)$ be a metric measure space and satisfy the so-called upper doubling condition and the geometrical doubling condition. In this paper, we introduce the atomic Hardy space $H^1(μ)$ and prove that its dual space is the known space ${\rm RBMO}(μ)$ in this context. Using this duality, we establish a criterion for the boundedness of linear operators from $H^1(μ)$ to any Banach space. As an application of this criterion, we obtain the boundedness of Calderón--Zygmund operators from $H^1(μ)$ to $L^1(μ)$.

On the Carleson duality

As a tool for solving the Neumann problem for divergence form equations, Kenig and Pipher introduced the space X of functions on the half space, such that the non-tangential maximal function of their L_2-Whitney averages belongs to L_2 on the boundary. In this paper, answering questions which arose from recent studies of boundary value problems by Auscher and the second author, we find the pre-dual of X, and characterize the pointwise multipliers from X to L_2 on the half space as the well-known Carleson-type space of functions introduced by Dahlberg. We also extend these results to L_p generalizations of the space X. Our results elaborate on the well-known duality between Carleson measures and non-tangential maximal functions.

On the relation of Carleson's embedding and the maximal theorem in the context of Banach space geometry

Hytönen, McIntosh and Portal (J. Funct. Anal., 2008) proved two vector-valued generalizations of the classical Carleson embedding theorem, both of them requiring the boundedness of a new vector-valued maximal operator, and the other one also the type p property of the underlying Banach space as an assumption. We show that these conditions are also necessary for the respective embedding theorems, thereby obtaining new equivalences between analytic and geometric properties of Banach spaces.

Sharp weighted bounds involving A_\infty

We improve on several weighted inequalities of recent interest by replacing a part of the A_p bounds by weaker A_\infty estimates involving Wilson's A_\infty constant \[ [w]_{A_\infty}':=\sup_Q\frac{1}{w(Q)}\int_Q M(wχ_Q). \] In particular, we show the following improvement of the first author's A_2 theorem for Calderón-Zygmund operators T: \[\|T\|_{B(L^2(w))}\leq c_T [w]_{A_2}^{1/2}([w]_{A_\infty}'+[w^{-1}]_{A_\infty}')^{1/2}. \] Corresponding A_p type results are obtained from a new extrapolation theorem with appropriate mixed A_p-A_\infty bounds. This uses new two-weight estimates for the maximal function, which improve on Buckley's classical bound. We also derive mixed A_1-A_\infty type results of Lerner, Ombrosi and the second author (Math. Res. Lett. 2009) of the form: \[\|T\|_{B(L^p(w))} \leq c pp'[w]_{A_1}^{1/p}([w]_{A_{\infty}}')^{1/p'}, 1<p<\infty, \] \[\|Tf\|_{L^{1,\infty}(w)} \leq c[w]_{A_1} \log(e+[w]'_{A_{\infty}}) \|f\|_{L^1(w)}. \] An estimate dual to the last one is also found, as well as new bounds for commutators of singular integrals.

Systems of dyadic cubes in a doubling metric space

A number of recent results in Euclidean Harmonic Analysis have exploited several adjacent systems of dyadic cubes, instead of just one fixed system. In this paper, we extend such constructions to general spaces of homogeneous type, making these tools available for Analysis on metric spaces. The results include a new (non-random) construction of boundedly many adjacent dyadic systems with useful covering properties, and a streamlined version of the random construction recently devised by H. Martikainen and the first author. We illustrate the usefulness of these constructions with applications to weighted inequalities and the BMO space; further applications will appear in forthcoming work.

Boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on Non-homogeneous Metric Measure Spaces

Let $({\mathcal X}, d, μ)$ be a separable metric measure space satisfying the known upper doubling condition, the geometrical doubling condition and the non-atomic condition that $μ(\{x\})=0$ for all $x\in{\mathcal X}$. In this paper, we show that the boundedness of a Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ on $L^2(μ)$ is equivalent to that of $T$ on $L^p(μ)$ for some $p\in (1, \infty)$, and that of $T$ from $L^1(μ)$ to $L^{1,\,\infty}(μ).$ As an application, we prove that if $T$ is a Calderón-Zygmund operator bounded on $L^2(μ)$, then its maximal operator is bounded on $L^p(μ)$ for all $p\in (1, \infty)$ and from the space of all complex-valued Borel measures on ${\mathcal X}$ to $L^{1,\,\infty}(μ)$. All these results generalize the corresponding results of Nazarov et al. on metric spaces with measures satisfying the so-called polynomial growth condition.

On general local Tb theorems

In this paper, local Tb theorems are studied both in the doubling and non-doubling situation. We prove a local Tb theorem for the class of upper doubling measures. With such general measures, scale invariant testing conditions are required (L^{\infty} or BMO). In the case of doubling measures, we also modify the general non-homogeneous method of proof to yield a new proof of the local Tb theorem with L^2 type testing conditions.

Sharp weighted estimates for dyadic shifts and the $A_2$ conjecture

We give a self-contained proof of the $A_2$ conjecture, which claims that the norm of any Calderon-Zygmund operator is bounded by the first degree of the $A_2$ norm of the weight. The original proof of this result by the first author relied on a subtle and rather difficult reduction to a testing condition by the last three authors. Here we replace this reduction by a new weighted norm bound for dyadic shifts - linear in the $A_2$ norm of the weight and quadratic in the complexity of the shift -, which is based on a new quantitative two-weight inequality for the shifts. These sharp one- and two-weight bounds for dyadic shifts are the main new results of this paper. They are obtained by rethinking the corresponding previous results of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera and Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. To complete the proof of the $A_2$ conjecture, we also provide a simple variant of the representation, already in the original proof, of an arbitrary Calderon-Zygmund operator as an average of random dyadic shifts and random dyadic paraproducts. This method of the representation amounts to the refinement of the techniques from nonhomogeneous Harmonic Analysis.

Stability in p of the H-infinity calculus of first-order systems in L^p

We study certain differential operators of the form AD arising from a first-order approach to the Kato square root problem. We show that if such operators are R-bisectorial in L^p, they remain R-bisectorial in L^q for all q close to p. In combination with our earlier results with Portal, which required such R-bisectoriality in different L^q spaces to start with, this shows that the R-bisectoriality in just one L^p actually implies bounded H-infinity calculus in L^q for all q close to p. We adapt the approach to related second-order results developed by Auscher, Hofmann and Martell, and also employ abstract extrapolation theorems due to Kalton and Mitrea.

Non-homogeneous Tb theorem and random dyadic cubes on metric measure spaces

We prove a Tb theorem on quasimetric spaces equipped with what we call an upper doubling measure. This is a property that encompasses both the doubling measures and those satisfying the upper power bound μ(B(x,r)) \le Cr^d. Our spaces are only assumed to satisfy the geometric doubling property: every ball of radius r can be covered by at most N balls of radius r/2. A key ingredient is the construction of random systems of dyadic cubes in such spaces.
