Exotic Calderón-Zygmund operators

We study singular integral operators with kernels that are more singular than standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels, but less singular than bi-parameter product Calderón-Zygmund kernels. These kernels arise as restrictions to two dimensions of certain three-dimensional kernels adapted to so-called Zygmund dilations, which is part of our motivation for studying these objects. We make the case that such kernels can, in many ways, be seen as part of the extended realm of standard kernels by proving that they satisfy both a T1 theorem and commutator estimates in a form reminiscent of the corresponding results for standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels. However, we show that one-parameter weighted estimates, in general, fail.

Multiresolution analysis and Zygmund dilations

Zygmund dilations are a group of dilations lying in between the standard product theory and the one-parameter setting - in $\mathbb{R}^3 = \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$ they are the dilations $(x_1, x_2, x_3) \mapsto (δ_1 x_1, δ_2 x_2, δ_1 δ_2 x_3)$. The dyadic multiresolution analysis and the related dyadic-probabilistic methods have been very impactful in the modern product singular integral theory. However, the multiresolution analysis has not been understood in the Zygmund dilation setting or in other modified product space settings. In this paper we develop this missing dyadic multiresolution analysis of Zygmund type, and justify its usefulness by bounding, on weighted spaces, a general class of singular integrals that are invariant under Zygmund dilations. We provide novel examples of Zygmund $A_p$ weights and Zygmund kernels showcasing the optimality of our kernel assumptions for weighted estimates.

End-point estimates, extrapolation for multilinear Muckenhoupt classes, and applications

In this paper we present the results announced in the recent work by the first, second, and fourth authors of the current paper concerning Rubio de Francia extrapolation for the so-called multilinear Muckenhoupt classes. Here we consider the situations where some of the exponents of the Lebesgue spaces appearing in the hypotheses and/or in the conclusion can be possibly infinity. The scheme we follow is similar, but, in doing so, we need to develop a one-variable end-point off-diagonal extrapolation result. This complements the corresponding ``finite'' case obtained by Duoandikoetxea, which was one of the main tools in the aforementioned paper. The second goal of this paper is to present some applications. For example, we obtain the full range of mixed-norm estimates for tensor products of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators with a proof based on extrapolation and on some estimates with weights in some mixed-norm classes. The same occurs with the multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators, the bilinear Hilbert transform, and the corresponding commutators with BMO functions. Extrapolation along with the already established weighted norm inequalities easily give scalar and vector-valued inequalities with multilinear weights and these include the end-point cases.

Multilinear operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund theory

We develop a general theory of multilinear singular integrals with operator-valued kernels, acting on tuples of UMD Banach spaces. This, in particular, involves investigating multilinear variants of the $\mathcal R$-boundedness condition naturally arising in operator-valued theory. We proceed by establishing a suitable representation of multilinear, operator-valued singular integrals in terms of operator-valued dyadic shifts and paraproducts, and studying the boundedness of these model operators via dyadic-probabilistic Banach space-valued analysis. In the bilinear case, we obtain a $T(1)$-type theorem without any additional assumptions on the Banach spaces other than the necessary UMD. Higher degrees of multilinearity are tackled via a new formulation of the Rademacher maximal function (RMF) condition. In addition to the natural UMD lattice cases, our RMF condition covers suitable tuples of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces. We employ our operator-valued theory to obtain new multilinear, multi-parameter, operator-valued theorems in the natural setting of UMD spaces with property $α$.

Multilinear singular integrals on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces

We prove $L^p$ bounds for the extensions of standard multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators to tuples of UMD spaces tied by a natural product structure. This can, for instance, mean the pointwise product in UMD function lattices, or the composition of operators in the Schatten-von Neumann subclass of the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. We do not require additional assumptions beyond UMD on each space - in contrast to previous results, we e.g. show that the Rademacher maximal function property is not necessary. The obtained generality allows for novel applications. For instance, we prove new versions of fractional Leibniz rules via our results concerning the boundedness of multilinear singular integrals in non-commutative $L^p$ spaces. Our proof techniques combine a novel scheme of induction on the multilinearity index with dyadic-probabilistic techniques in the UMD space setting.

Some new weighted estimates on product spaces

We complete our theory of weighted $L^p(w_1) \times L^q(w_2) \to L^r(w_1^{r/p} w_2^{r/q})$ estimates for bilinear bi-parameter Calderón--Zygmund operators under the assumption that $w_1 \in A_p$ and $w_2 \in A_q$ are bi-parameter weights. This is done by lifting a previous restriction on the class of singular integrals by extending a classical result of Muckenhoupt and Wheeden regarding weighted BMO spaces to the product BMO setting. We use this extension of the Muckenhoupt-Wheeden result also to generalise some two-weight commutator estimates from bi-parameter to multi-parameter. This gives a fully satisfactory Bloom type upper estimate for $[T_1, [T_2, \ldots [b, T_k]]]$, where each $T_i$ can be a completely general multi-parameter Calderón--Zygmund operator.

Bilinear Calderón-Zygmund theory on product spaces

We develop a wide general theory of bilinear bi-parameter singular integrals $T$. First, we prove a dyadic representation theorem starting from $T1$ assumptions and apply it to show many estimates, including $L^p \times L^q \to L^r$ estimates in the full natural range together with weighted estimates and mixed-norm estimates. Second, we develop commutator decompositions and show estimates in the full range for commutators and iterated commutators, like $[b_1,T]_1$ and $[b_2, [b_1, T]_1]_2$, where $b_1$ and $b_2$ are little BMO functions. Our proof method can be used to simplify and improve linear commutator proofs, even in the two-weight Bloom setting. We also prove commutator lower bounds by using and developing the recent median method.

Boundedness of non-homogeneous square functions and $L^q$ type testing conditions with $q \in (1,2)$

We continue the study of local $Tb$ theorems for square functions defined in the upper half-space $(\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+, μ\times dt/t)$. Here $μ$ is allowed to be a non-homogeneous measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper we prove a boundedness result assuming local $L^q$ type testing conditions in the difficult range $q \in (1,2)$. Our theorem is a non-homogeneous version of a result of S. Hofmann valid for the Lebesgue measure. It is also an extension of the recent results of M. Lacey and the first named author where non-homogeneous local $L^2$ testing conditions have been considered.

Some obstacles in characterising the boundedness of bi-parameter singular integrals

The famous $T1$ theorem for classical Calderón-Zygmund operators is a characterisation for their boundedness in $L^{2}$. In the bi-parameter case, on the other hand, the current $T1$ theorem is merely a collection of sufficient conditions. This difference in mind, we study a particular dyadic bi-parameter singular integral operator, namely the full mixed bi-parameter paraproduct $P$, which is precisely the operator responsible for the outstanding problems in the bi-parameter theory. We make several remarks about $P$, the common theme of which is to demonstrate the delicacy of the problem of finding a completely satisfactory product $T1$ theorem. For example, $P$ need not be unconditionally bounded if it is conditionally bounded -- a major difference compared to the corresponding one-parameter model operators. Moreover, currently the theory even lacks a characterisation for the potentially easier unconditional boundedness. The product BMO condition is sufficient, but far from necessary: we show by example that unconditional boundedness does not even imply the weaker rectangular BMO condition.

Local $Tb$ theorem with $L^2$ testing conditions and general measures: Calderón-Zygmund operators

Local $Tb$ theorems with $L^p$ type testing conditions, which are not scale invariant, have been studied widely in the case of the Lebesgue measure. Until very recently, local $Tb$ theorems in the non-homogeneous case had only been proved assuming scale invariant ($L^{\infty}$ or BMO) testing conditions. The combination of non-scale-invariance and general measures is a delicate issue. In a previous paper we overcame this obstacle in the model case of square functions defined using general measures. In this paper we finally tackle the very demanding case of Calderón-Zygmund operators. That is, we prove a non-homogeneous local $Tb$ theorem with $L^2$ type testing conditions for all Calderón-Zygmund operators. In doing so we prove general twisted martingale transform inequalities which turn out to be subtle in our general framework.

Square functions with general measures II

We continue developing the theory of conical and vertical square functions on $R^{n}$, where $μ$ is a power bounded measure, possibly non-doubling. We provide new boundedness criteria and construct various counterexamples. First, we prove a general local $Tb$ theorem with tent space $T^{2,\infty}$ type testing conditions to characterise the $L^{2}$ boundedness. Second, we completely answer the question, whether the boundedness of our operators on $L^{2}$ implies boundedness on other $L^{p}$ spaces, including the endpoints. For the conical square function, the answers are generally affirmative, but the vertical square function can be unbounded on $L^{p}$ for $p > 2$, even if $μ= dx$. For this, we present a counterexample. Our kernels $s_t$, $t > 0$, do not necessarily satisfy any continuity in the first variable -- a point of technical importance throughout the paper. Third, we construct a non-doubling Cantor-type measure and an associated conical square function operator, whose $L^{2}$ boundedness depends on the exact aperture of the cone used in the definition. Thus, in the non-homogeneous world, the 'change of aperture' technique -- widely used in classical tent space literature -- is not available. Fourth, we establish the sharp $A_{p}$-weighted bound for the conical square function under the assumption that $μ$ is doubling.

A Characterization of the boundedness of the median maximal function on weighted L^p spaces

We introduce and study the median maximal function \mathcal{M} f, defined in the same manner as the classical Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, only replacing integral averages of f by medians throughout the definition. This change has a qualitative impact on the mapping properties of the maximal operator: in contrast with the Hardy-Littlewood operator, which is not bounded on L^1, we prove that \mathcal{M} is bounded on L^p(w) for all 0 < p < \infty, if and only if w \in A_{\infty}. The characterization is purely qualitative and does not give the dependence on [w]_{A_{\infty}}. However, the sharp bound \|\mathcal{M}\|_{L^1(w) \to L^1(w)} \lesssim [w]_{A_1} is established.

Weak And Strong Type Estimates for Maximal Truncations of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on $ A_p$ Weighted Spaces

For 1<p< \infty, weight w \in A_p, and any L ^2 -bounded Calderón-Zygmund operator T, we show that there is a constant C(T,P) so that we prove the sharp norm dependence on T_#, the maximal truncations of T, in both weak and strong type L^p(w) norms. Namely, for the weak type norm, T_# maps L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w) with norm at most \|w\|_{A_p}. And for the strong type norm, the norm estimate is \|w\|_{A_p}^{\max(1, (p-1) ^{-1})}. These estimates are not improvable in the power of \lVert w\rVert_{A_p}. Our argument follows the outlines of the arguments of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera (Math.\ Ann.\ 2010) and Hytönen-Pérez-Treil-Volberg (arXiv, 2010) with new ingredients, including a weak-type estimate for certain duals of T_#, and sufficient conditions for two weight inequalities in L ^{p} for T_#. Our proof does not rely upon extrapolation.

On general local Tb theorems

In this paper, local Tb theorems are studied both in the doubling and non-doubling situation. We prove a local Tb theorem for the class of upper doubling measures. With such general measures, scale invariant testing conditions are required (L^{\infty} or BMO). In the case of doubling measures, we also modify the general non-homogeneous method of proof to yield a new proof of the local Tb theorem with L^2 type testing conditions.

Non-homogeneous Tb theorem and random dyadic cubes on metric measure spaces

We prove a Tb theorem on quasimetric spaces equipped with what we call an upper doubling measure. This is a property that encompasses both the doubling measures and those satisfying the upper power bound μ(B(x,r)) \le Cr^d. Our spaces are only assumed to satisfy the geometric doubling property: every ball of radius r can be covered by at most N balls of radius r/2. A key ingredient is the construction of random systems of dyadic cubes in such spaces.
