The Parametric Approach to the Willmore Flow

We introduce a parametric framework for the study of Willmore gradient flows which enables to consider a general class of weak, energy-level solutions and opens the possibility to study energy quantization and finite-time singularities. We restrict in this first work to a small-energy regime and prove that, for small-energy weak immersions, the Cauchy problem in this class admits a unique solution.

The Unique Tangent Cone Property for Weakly Holomorphic Maps into Projective Algebraic Varieties

In the present paper, we establish the uniqueness of tangent maps for general weakly holomorphic and locally approximable maps from an arbitrary almost complex manifold into projective algebraic varieties. As a byproduct of the approach and the techniques developed we also obtain the unique tangent cone property for a special class of non-rectifiable positive pseudo-holomorphic cycles. This approach gives also a new proof of the main result by C. Bellettini on the uniqueness of tangent cones for positive integral $(p,p)$-cycles in arbitrary almost complex manifolds.

A Resolution of the Poisson Problem for Elastic Plates

The Poisson problem consists in finding an immersed surface $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}^m$ minimising Germain's elastic energy (known as Willmore energy in geometry) with prescribed boundary, boundary Gauss map and area which constitutes a non-linear model for the equilibrium state of thin, clamped elastic plates originating from the work of S. Germain and S.D. Poisson or the early XIX century. We present a solution to this problem consisting in the minimisation of the total curvature energy $E(Σ)=\int_Σ|\operatorname{I\!I}_Σ|^2_{g_Σ}\,\mathrm{d}vol_Σ$ ($\operatorname{I\!I}_Σ$ is the second fundamental form of $Σ$), which is variationally equivalent to the elastic energy, in the case of boundary data of class $C^{1,1}$ and when the boundary curve is simple and closed. The minimum is realised by an immersed disk, possibly with a finite number of branch points in its interior, which is of class $C^{1,α}$ up to the boundary for some $0<α<1$, and whose Gauss map extends to a map of class $C^{0,α}$ up to the boundary.

A Pohozaev-type formula and Quantization of Horizontal Half-Harmonic Maps

In a recent paper the first and the third authors introduced the notion of horizontal α-harmonic map, with respect to a given C^1 planes distribution P_T on all R^m. The goal of this paper is to investigate compactness and quantization properties of sequences of horizontal 1/2- harmonic maps u_k in 1D. The quantization analysis is obtained through a precise asymptotic development of the energy of u_k in the neck regions and a subtle application of new Pohozaev-type formulae.

Horizontal $α$-Harmonic Maps

Given a $C^1$ planes distribution $P_T$ on all ${\mathbb R}^m$ we consider {\em horizontal $α$-harmonic maps}, $α\ge 1/2$, with respect to such a distribution. These are maps $u\in H^α({\mathbb R}^k,{\mathbb R}^m)$ satisfying $P_T\nabla u=\nabla u$ and $P_T(u)(-Δ)^αu=0$ in ${\mathcal D}'({\mathbb R}^k).$ If the distribution of planes is integrable then we recover the classical case of $α$-harmonic maps with values into a manifold. In this paper we shall focus our attention to the case $α=1/2$ in dimension $1$ and $α=2$ in dimension $2$ and we investigate the regularity of the {\em horizontal $α$-harmonic maps}. In both cases we show that such maps satisfy a Schrödinger type system with an antisymmetric potential, that permits us to apply the previous results obtained by the authors. Finally we study the regularity of {\em variational $α$-harmonic} maps which are critical points of $\|(-Δ)^{α/2} u\|^2_{L^2}$ under the constraint to be tangent (horizontal) to a given planes distribution. We produce a convexification of this variational problem which permits to write it's Euler Lagrange equations.

The resolution of the Yang-Mills Plateau problem in super-critical dimensions

We study the minimization problem for the Yang-Mills energy under fixed boundary connection in supercritical dimension $n\geq 5$. We define the natural function space A_{G} in which to formulate this problem in analogy to the space of integral currents used for the classical Plateau problem. The space A_{G} can be also interpreted as a space of weak connections on a "real measure theoretic version" of reflexive sheaves from complex geometry. We prove the weak closure result which ensures the existence of energy-minimizing weak connections in A_{G}. We then prove that any weak connection from A_{G} can be obtained as a L^2-limit of classical connections over bundles with defects. This approximation result is then extended to a Morrey analogue. We prove the optimal regularity result for Yang-Mills local minimizers. On the way to prove this result we establish a Coulomb gauge extraction theorem for weak curvatures with small Yang-Mills density. This generalizes to the general framework of weak $L^2$ curvatures previous works of Meyer-Rivière and Tao-Tian in which respectively a strong approximability property and an admissibility property were assumed in addition.

A Viscosity Method for the Min-Max Construction of Closed Geodesics

We present a viscosity approach to the min-max construction of closed geodesics on compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension. We also construct counter-examples in dimension $1$ and $2$ to the $\varepsilon$-regularity in the convergence procedure. Furthermore, we prove the lower semi-continuity of the index of our sequence of critical points converging towards a closed non-trivial geodesic.

Blow-up analysis of a nonlocal Liouville-type equation

In this paper we perform a blow-up and quantization analysis of the following nonlocal Liouville-type equation \begin{equation}(-Δ)^\frac12 u= κe^u-1~\mbox{in $S^1$,} \end{equation} where $(-Δ)^\frac{1}{2}$ stands for the fractional Laplacian and $κ$ is a bounded function. We interpret the above equation as the prescribed curvature equation to a curve in conformal parametrization. We also establish a relation between this equation and the analogous equation in $\mathbb{R}$ \begin{equation} (-Δ)^\frac{1}{2} u =Ke^u \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}, \end{equation} with $K$ bounded on $\mathbb{R}$.

Exploring the Unknown: the Work of Louis Nirenberg on Partial Differential Equations

Partial differential equations are central objects in the mathematical modeling of natural and social sciences (sound propagation, heat diffusion, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, elasticity, fluid dynamics, quantum mechanics, population growth, finance...etc). They were for a long time restricted only to the study of natural phenomena or questions pertaining to geometry, before becoming over the course of time, and especially in the last century, a field in itself. The second half of the XXth century was the "golden age" of the exploration of partial differential equations from a theoretical perspective. The mathematical work of Louis Nirenberg since the early 1950s has to a large extent contributed to the growth of this fundamental area of human knowledge. The name Nirenberg is associated with many of the milestones in the study of PDEs. The award of the Abel Prize to Louis Nirenberg marks a special occasion for us to revisit the development of the field of PDEs and the work of one of the main actors of its exploration.

The Variations of Yang-Mills Lagrangian

Yang-Mills theory is growing at the interface between high energy physics and mathematics. It is well known that Yang-Mills theory and Gauge theory in general had a profound impact on the development of modern differential and algebraic geometry. One could quote Donaldson invariants in four dimensional differential topology, Hitchin Kobayashi conjecture relating the existence of Hermitian-Einstein metric on holomorphic bundles over Kähler manifolds and Mumford stability in complex geometry or also Gromov Witten invariants in symplectic geometry...etc. While the influence of Gauge theory in geometry is quite notorious, one tends sometimes to forget that Yang-Mills theory has been also at the heart of fundamental progresses in the non-linear analysis of Partial Differential Equations in the last decades. The purpose of this mini-course is to present the variations of this important lagrangian. We shall raise analysis questions such as existence and regularity of Yang-Mills minimizers or such as the compactification of the moduli space of critical points to Yang-mills lagrangian in general. These notes correspond to a mini-course given by the author on the subject at the 9th summer school in Differential Geometry at the Korean Institute for Advanced Studies between june 23rd and june 27th 2014.

Bourbaki Seminar 1081 : Min-max methods and the Willmore conjecture, after Fernando Codá Marques and André Arroja Neves

Two years ago, F.C. Marques and A.A. Neves implemented, in the framework of closed rectifiable 2-dimensional currents of the 3-dimensional sphere, a min-max method in geometric measure theory due to F. Almgren and J. Pitts. Using this approach they succeeded in proving that the famous Clifford torus minimizes the area among all closed minimal surfaces of non-zero genus in $S^3$. Another spectacular consequence of their work is to provide a proof of the Willmore conjecture. The goal of this talk is to discuss first the general framework of these two theorems of Marques and Neves. We shall then present the structures and some key details of their proofs. We will then address the scope of this remarkable contribution to the calculus of variations on surfaces in a 3-dimensional space.

Tori in $S^3$ minimizing locally the conformal volume

We prove that the conformal immersions of complex two tori into $S^3$ which locally minimize their conformal volume in their conformal class all satisfy some elliptic PDE. We prove that they are either minimal tori, CMC flat tori, elliptic conformally constrained minimal tori or critical point of the area under some fixed conformally congruent area. On the way to establish this result we prove that tori which are critical points of the area for perturbations within a given conformal class and which are degenerate points of the conformal class mapping - i.e. isothermic - are either minimal surfaces or flat CMC tori. These results are all proved in the general framework of weak immersions.

Critical weak immersed Surfaces within Sub-manifolds of the Teichmüller Space

We prove that the critical points of various energies such as the area, the Willmore energy, the frame energy for tori...etc among possibly branched immersions constrained to evolve within a smooth sub-manifold of the Teichmüller space satisfy the corresponding constrained Euler Lagrange equation. We deduce that critical points of the Willmore energy or the frame energy for tori are smooth analytic surfaces, away possibly from isolated branched points, under the condition that either the genus is at most 2 or if the sub-manifold does not intersect the subspace of hyper-elliptic points. Using a compactness result from a previous work of the author, we can conclude that each closed sub-manifold of the Teichmüller space, including points, under the previous assumptions, posses a possibly branched smooth Willmore minimizer satisfying the conformal-constrained Willmore equation.

Embedded surfaces of arbitrary genus minimizing the Willmore energy under isoperimetric constraint

The isoperimetric ratio of an embedded surface in $R^3$ is defined as the ratio of the area of the surface to power three to the squared enclosed volume. The aim of the present work is to study the minimization of the Willmore energy under fixed isoperimetric ratio when the underlying abstract surface has fixed genus $g\geq 0$. The corresponding problem in the case of spherical surfaces, i.e. $g=0$, was recently solved by Schygulla with different methods.

Global gauges and global extensions in optimal spaces

We consider the problem of extending functions ϕ:\to S^n to functions u:B^{n+1}\to S^n for n=2,3. We assume ϕto belong to the critical space W^{1,n} and we construct a W^{1,(n+1,\infty)}-controlled extension u. The Lorentz-Sobolev space W^{1,(n+1,\infty)} is optimal for such controlled extension. Then we use such results to construct global controlled gauges for L^4-connections over trivial SU(2)-bundles in 4 dimensions. This result is a global version of the local Sobolev control of connections obtained by K. Uhlenbeck.

Immersed Spheres of Finite Total Curvature into Manifolds

We prove that a sequence of possibly branched, weak immersions of the two-sphere $S^2$ into an arbitrary compact riemannian manifold $(M^m,h)$ with uniformly bounded area and uniformly bounded $L^2-$norm of the second fundamental form either collapse to a point or weakly converges as current, modulo extraction of a subsequence, to a Lipschitz mapping of $S^2$ and whose image is made of a connected union of finitely many, possibly branched, weak immersions of $S^2$ with finite total curvature. We prove moreover that if the sequence belongs to a class $γ$ of $π_2(M^m)$ the limiting lipschitz mapping of $S^2$ realizes this class as well.

Sequential Weak Approximation for Maps of Finite Hessian Energy

Consider the space $W^{2,2}(Ω;N)$ of second order Sobolev mappings $\ v\ $ from a smooth domain $Ω\subset\R^m$ to a compact Riemannian manifold $N$ whose Hessian energy $\int_Ω|\nabla^2 v|^2\, dx$ is finite. Here we are interested in relations between the topology of $N$ and the $W^{2,2}$ strong or weak approximability of a $W^{2,2}$ map by a sequence of smooth maps from $Ω$ to $N$. We treat in detail $W^{2,2}(\B^5,S^3)$ where we establish the \underline{sequential weak} $W^{2,2}$ density of $W^{2,2}(\B^5,S^3)\cap{\mathcal C}^\infty$. The strong $W^{2,2}$ approximability of higher order Sobolev maps has been studied in the recent preprint \cite{BPV} of P. Bousquet, A. Ponce, and J. Van Schaftigen. For an individual map $v\in W^{2,2}(\B^5,S^3)$, we define a number $L(v)$ which is approximately the total length required to connect the isolated singularities of a strong approximation $u$ of $v$ either to each other or to $\p\B^5$. Then $L(v)=0$ if and only if $v$ admits $W^{2,2}$ strongly approximable by smooth maps. Our critical result, obtained by constructing specific curves connecting the singularities of $u$, is the bound $\ L(u)\leq c\int_{\B^5}|\nabla^2 u|^2\, dx\ $. This allows us to construct, for the given Sobolev map $v\in W^{2,2}(\B^5,S^3)$, the desired $W^{2,2}$ weakly approximating sequence of smooth maps. To find suitable connecting curves for $u$, one uses the twisting of a $u$ pull-back normal framing of a suitable level surface of $u$

Sequences of Smooth Global Isothermic Immersions

In the present work we study the behavior of sequences of smooth global isothermic immersions of a given closed surface and having a uniformly bounded total curvature. We prove that, if the conformal class of this sequence is bounded in the Moduli space of the surface, it weakly converges in W^{2,2} away from finitely many points, modulo extraction of a subsequence, to a possibly branched weak isothermic immersion of this surface. Moreover, if this limit happens to be smooth away from the branched points, we give an optimal description of the possible loss of strong compactness of such a subsequence by proving that, beside possibly finitely many atomic concentrations, the defect measure associated to the L^2 norm of the second fundamental form is "transported" along exceptional directions given by some holomorphic quadratic forms associated the limiting surface. We give examples where these losses of compactness, invariant along such exceptional directions, eventually happen.

Willmore Spheres in Compact Riemannian Manifolds

The paper is devoted to the variational analysis of the Willmore, and other L^2 curvature functionals, among immersions of 2-dimensional surfaces into a compact riemannian m-manifold (M^m,h) with m>2. The goal of the paper is twofold, on one hand, we give the right setting for doing the calculus of variations (including min max methods) of such functionals for immersions into manifolds and, on the other hand, we prove existence results for possibly branched Willmore spheres under various constraints (prescribed homotopy class, prescribed area) or under curvature assumptions for M^m. To this aim, using the integrability by compensation, we develop first the regularity theory for the critical points of such functionals. We then prove a rigidity theorem concerning the relation between CMC and Willmore spheres. Then we prove that, for every non null 2-homotopy class, there exists a representative given by a Lipschitz map from the 2-sphere into M^m realizing a connected family of conformal smooth (possibly branched) area constrained Willmore spheres (as explained in the introduction, this comes as a natural extension of the minimal immersed spheres in homotopy class constructed by Sacks and Uhlembeck in \cite{SaU}, in situations when they do not exist). Moreover, for every A>0 we minimize the Willmore functional among connected families of weak, possibly branched, immersions of the 2-sphere having prescribed total area equal to A and we prove full regularity for the minimizer. Finally, under a mild curvature condition on (M^m,h), we minimize the sum of the area with the square of the L^2 norm of the second fundamental form, among weak possibly branched immersions of the two sphere and we prove the regularity of the minimizer.

Asymptotic Analysis of Branched Willmore Surfaces

We consider a closed Willmore surface properly immersed in ${\R}^m$ (m>2) with square-integrable second fundamental form, and with one point-singularity of finite arbitrary integer order. Using the "conservative" reformulation of the Willmore equation introduced in a previous paper by the second author, we show that, in an appropriate conformal parametrization, the gradient of the Gauss map of the immersion has bounded mean oscillations if the singularity has order one, and is bounded if the order is at least two. We develop around the singular point local asymptotic expansions for the immersion, its first and second derivatives, and for the mean curvature vector. Finally, we exhibit an explicit condition ensuring the removability of the point-singularity

Variational Principles for immersed Surfaces with $L^2$-bounded Second Fundamental Form

In this work we present new fundamental tools for studying the variations of the Willmore functional of immersed surfaces into $R^m$. This approach gives for instance a new proof of the existence of a Willmore minimizing embedding of an arbitrary closed surface in arbitrary codimension. We explain how the same approach can solve constraint minimization problems for the Willmore functional. We show in particular that, for a given closed surface and a given conformal class for this surface, there is an immersion in $R^m$, away possibly from isolated branched points, which minimizes the Willmore energy among all possible Lipschitz immersions in $R^m$ having an $L^2-$bounded second fundamental form and realizing this conformal class. This branched immersion is either a smooth Conformal Willmore branched immersion or an isothermic branched immersion. We show that branched points do not exist whenever the minimal energy in the conformal class is less than $8π$ and that these immersions extend to smooth conformal Willmore embeddings or global isothermic embeddings of the surface in that case. Finally, as a by-product of our analysis, we establish that inside a compact subspace of the moduli space the following holds : weak limit of Palais Smale Willmore sequences are Conformal Willmore, that weak limits of Palais Smale sequences of Conformal Willmore are either Conformal Willmore or Global Isothermic and finally we observe also that weakly converging Palais Smale sequences of Global Isothermic Immersions are Global Isothermic. The analysis developped along the paper - in particular these last results - opens the door to the possibility of constructing new critical saddle points of the Willmore functional without or with constraints using min max methods
