Existence and Regularity of Spheres Minimising the Canham-Helfrich Energy

We prove existence and regularity of minimisers for the Canham-Helfrich energy in the class of weak (possibly branched and bubbled) immersions of the $2$-sphere. This solves (the spherical case) of the minimisation problem proposed by Helfrich in 1973, modelling lipid bilayer membranes. On the way to prove the main results we establish the lower semicontinuity of the Canham-Helfrich energy under weak convergence of (possibly branched and bubbled) weak immersions.

Sharp Cheeger-Buser type inequalities in $ \mathsf{RCD}(K,\infty)$ spaces

The goal of the paper is to sharpen and generalise bounds involving the Cheeger's isoperimetric constant $h$ and the first eigenvalue $λ_{1}$ of the Laplacian. A celebrated lower bound of $λ_{1}$ in terms of $h$, $λ_{1}\geq h^{2}/4$, was proved by Cheeger in 1970 for smooth Riemannian manifolds. An upper bound on $λ_{1}$ in terms of $h$ was established by Buser in 1982 (with dimensional constants) and improved (to a dimension-free estimate) by Ledoux in 2004 for smooth Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. The goal of the paper is two fold. First: we sharpen the inequalities obtained by Buser and Ledoux obtaining a dimension-free sharp Buser inequality for spaces with (Bakry-Émery weighted) Ricci curvature bounded below by $K\in {\mathbb R}$ (the inequality is sharp for $K>0$ as equality is obtained on the Gaussian space). Second: all of our results hold in the higher generality of (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below in synthetic sense, the so-called $ \mathsf{RCD}(K,\infty)$ spaces.

Polya-Szego inequality and Dirichlet $p$-spectral gap for non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We study decreasing rearrangements of functions defined on (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below by $K>0$ and dimension bounded above by $N\in (1,\infty)$ in a synthetic sense, the so called $CD(K,N)$ spaces. We first establish a Polya-Szego type inequality stating that the $W^{1,p}$-Sobolev norm decreases under such a rearrangement and apply the result to show sharp spectral gap for the $p$-Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions (on open subsets), for every $p\in (1,\infty)$. This extends to the non-smooth setting a classical result of Bérard-Meyer and Matei; remarkable examples of spaces fitting out framework and for which the results seem new include: measured-Gromov Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci$\geq K>0$, finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature$\geq K>0$, Finsler manifolds with Ricci$\geq K>0$. In the second part of the paper we prove new rigidity and almost rigidity results attached to the aforementioned inequalities, in the framework of $RCD(K,N)$ spaces, which seem original even for smooth Riemannian manifolds with Ricci$\geq K>0$.

Almost euclidean Isoperimetric Inequalities in spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds

Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.

Global Conformal Invariants of Submanifolds

The goal of the present paper is to investigate the algebraic structure of global conformal invariants of submanifolds. These are defined to be conformally invariant integrals of geometric scalars of the tangent and normal bundle. A famous example of a global conformal invariant is the Willmore energy of a surface. In codimension one we classify such invariants, showing that under a structural hypothesis (more precisely we assume the integrand depends separately on the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, and not on their derivatives) the integrand can only consist of an intrinsic scalar conformal invariant, an extrinsic scalar conformal invariant and the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand. In particular, for codimension one surfaces, we show that the Willmore energy is the unique global conformal invariant, up to the addition of a topological term (the Gauss curvature, giving the Euler Characteristic by the Gauss Bonnet Theorem). A similar statement holds also for codimension two surfaces, once taking into account an additional topological term given by the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand of the normal bundle. We also discuss existence and properties of natural higher dimensional (and codimensional) generalizations of the Willmore energy.

Homotopy properties of horizontal loop spaces and applications to closed sub-riemannian geodesics

Given a manifold $M$ and a proper sub-bundle $Δ\subset TM$, we study homotopy properties of the horizontal base-point free loop space $Λ$, i.e. the space of absolutely continuous maps $γ:S^1\to M$ whose velocities are constrained to $Δ$ (for example: legendrian knots in a contact manifold). A key technical ingredient for our study is the proof that the base-point map $F:Λ\to M$ (the map associating to every loop its base-point) is a Hurewicz fibration for the $W^{1,2}$ topology on $Λ$. Using this result we show that, even if the space $Λ$ might have deep singularities (for example: constant loops form a singular manifold homeomorphic to $M$), its homotopy can be controlled nicely. In particular we prove that $Λ$ (with the $W^{1,2}$ topology) has the homotopy type of a CW-complex, that its inclusion in the standard base-point free loop space (i.e. the space of loops with no non-holonomic constraint) is a homotopy equivalence, and consequently its homotopy groups can be computed as $π_k(Λ)\simeq π_k(M) \ltimes π_{k+1}(M)$ for all $k\geq 0.$ These topological results are applied, in the second part of the paper, to the problem of the existence of closed sub-riemannian geodesics. In the general case we prove that if $(M, Δ)$ is a compact sub-riemannian manifold, each non trivial homotopy class in $π_1(M)$ can be represented by a closed sub-riemannian geodesic. In the contact case, we prove a min-max result generalizing the celebrated Lyusternik-Fet theorem: if $(M, Δ)$ is a compact, contact manifold, then every sub-riemannian metric on $Δ$ carries at least one closed sub-riemannian geodesic. This result is based on a combination of the above topological results with a delicate study of the Palais-Smale condition in the vicinity of abnormal loops (singular points of $Λ$).

Nonlinear diffusion equations and curvature conditions in metric measure spaces

Aim of this paper is to provide new characterizations of the curvature dimension condition in the context of metric measure spaces (X,d,m). On the geometric side, our new approach takes into account suitable weighted action functionals which provide the natural modulus of K-convexity when one investigates the convexity properties of N-dimensional entropies. On the side of diffusion semigroups and evolution variational inequalities, our new approach uses the nonlinear diffusion semigroup induced by the N-dimensional entropy, in place of the heat flow. Under suitable assumptions (most notably the quadraticity of Cheeger's energy relative to the metric measure structure) both approaches are shown to be equivalent to the strong CD*(K,N) condition of Bacher-Sturm.

On the volume measure of non-smooth spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We prove that, given an $RCD^{*}(K,N)$-space $(X,d,m)$, then it is possible to $m$-essentially cover $X$ by measurable subsets $(R_{i})_{i\in \mathbb{N}}$ with the following property: for each $i$ there exists $k_{i} \in \mathbb{N}\cap [1,N]$ such that $m\llcorner R_{i}$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the $k_{i}$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We also show that a Lipschitz differentiability space which is bi-Lipschitz embeddable into a euclidean space is rectifiable as a metric measure space, and we conclude with an application to Alexandrov spaces.

Optimal maps in essentially non-branching spaces

In this note we prove that in a metric measure space $(X, d, m)$ verifying the measure contraction property with parameters $K \in \mathbb{R}$ and $1< N< \infty$, any optimal transference plan between two marginal measures is induced by an optimal map, provided the first marginal is absolutely continuous with respect to $m$ and the space itself is essentially non-branching. In particular this shows that there exists a unique transport plan and it is induced by a map.

A non-existence result for minimal catenoids in asymptotically flat spaces

We show that asymptotically Schwarzschildean 3-manifolds cannot contain minimal surfaces obtained by perturbative deformations of a Euclidean catenoid, no matter how small the ADM mass of the ambient space and how large the neck of the catenoid itself. Such an obstruction is sharply three-dimensional and ceases to hold for more general classes of asymptotically flat data.

On the universal cover and the fundamental group of an $RCD^*(K,N)$-space

The main goal of the paper is to prove the existence of the universal cover for $RCD^*(K,N)$-spaces. This generalizes earlier work of C. Sormani and the second named author on the existence of universal covers for Ricci limit spaces. As a result, we also obtain several structure results on the (revised) fundamental group of such spaces. These are the first topological results for $RCD^{*}(K,N)$-spaces without extra structural-topological assumptions (such as semi-local simple connectedness).

Rigidity for critical points in the Levy-Gromov inequality

The Levy-Gromov inequality states that round spheres have the least isoperimetric profile (normalized by total volume) among Riemannian manifolds with a fixed positive lower bound on the Ricci tensor. In this note we study critical metrics corresponding to the Levy-Gromov inequality and prove that, in two-dimensions, this criticality condition is quite rigid, as it characterizes round spheres and projective planes.

Measure rigidity of Ricci curvature lower bounds

The measure contraction property, $\mathsf{MCP}$ for short, is a weak Ricci curvature lower bound conditions for metric measure spaces. The goal of this paper is to understand which structural properties such assumption (or even weaker modifications) implies on the measure, on its support and on the geodesics of the space. We start our investigation from the euclidean case by proving that if a positive Radon measure $\mathsf{m}$ over $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is such that $(\mathbb{R}^{d},|\cdot |, \mathsf{m})$ verifies a weaker variant of $\mathsf{MCP}$, then its support $\text{spt}(\mathsf{m})$ must be convex and $\mathsf{m}$ has to be absolutely continuous with respect to the relevant Hausdorff measure of $\text{spt}(\mathsf{m})$. This result is then used as a starting point to investigate the rigidity of $\mathsf{MCP}$ in the metric framework. We introduce the new notion of $reference \ measure$ for a metric space and prove that if $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathsf{m})$ is essentially non-branching and verifies $\mathsf{MCP}$, and $μ$ is an essentially non-branching $\mathsf{MCP}$ reference measure for $(\text{spt}(\mathsf{m}), \mathsf{d})$, then $\mathsf{m}$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $μ$, on the set of points where an inversion plan exists. As a consequence, an essentially non-branching $\mathsf{MCP}$ reference measure enjoys a weak type of uniqueness, up to densities. We also prove a stability property for reference measures under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, provided an additional uniform bound holds. In the final part we present concrete examples of metric spaces with reference measures, both in smooth and non-smooth setting.

A Gap Theorem for Willmore Tori and an application to the Willmore Flow

In 1965 Willmore conjectured that the integral of the square of the mean curvature of a torus immersed in $R^3$ is at least $2π^2$ and attains this minimal value if and only if the torus is a Möbius transform of the Clifford torus. This was recently proved by Marques and Neves. In this paper, we show for tori there is a gap to the next critical point of the Willmore energy and we discuss an application to the Willmore flow. We also prove an energy gap from the Clifford torus to surfaces of higher genus.

Existence of Integral $m$-Varifolds minimizing $\int |A|^p$ and $\int |H|^p$, $p>m$, in Riemannian Manifolds

We prove existence and partial regularity of integral rectifiable $m$-dimensional varifolds minimizing functionals of the type $\int |H|^p$ and $\int |A|^p$ in a given Riemannian $n$-dimensional manifold $(N,g)$, $2\leq m<n$ and $p>m$, under suitable assumptions on $N$ (in the end of the paper we give many examples of such ambient manifolds). To this aim we introduce the following new tools: some monotonicity formulas for varifolds in $\mathbb{R}^S$ involving $\int |H|^p$, to avoid degeneracy of the minimizer, and a sort of isoperimetric inequality to bound the mass in terms of the mentioned functionals.

A new notion of angle between three points in a metric space

We give a new notion of angle in general metric spaces; more precisely, given a triple a points $p,x,q$ in a metric space $(X,d)$, we introduce the notion of angle cone ${\angle_{pxq}}$ as being an interval ${\angle_{pxq}}:=[\angle^-_{pxq},\angle^+_{pxq}]$, where the quantities $\angle^\pm_{pxq}$ are defined in terms of the distance functions from $p$ and $q$ via a duality construction of differentials and gradients holding for locally Lipschitz functions on a general metric space. Our definition in the Euclidean plane gives the standard angle between three points and in a Riemannian manifold coincides with the usual angle between the geodesics, if $x$ is not in the cut locus of $p$ or $q$. We show that in general the angle cone is not single valued (even in case the metric space is a smooth Riemannian manifold, if $x$ is in the cut locus of $p$ or $q$), but if we endow the metric space with a positive Borel measure $m$ obtaining the metric measure space $(X,d,m)$ then under quite general assumptions (which include many fundamental examples as Riemannian manifolds, finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded from below, Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below, and normed spaces with strictly convex norm), fixed $p,q \in X$, the angle cone at $x$ is single valued for $m$-a.e. $x \in X$. We prove some basic properties of the angle cone (such as the invariance under homotheties of the space) and we analyze in detail the case $(X,d,m)$ is a measured-Gromov-Hausdorff limit of a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below, showing the consistency of our definition with a recent construction of Honda.

Embedded surfaces of arbitrary genus minimizing the Willmore energy under isoperimetric constraint

The isoperimetric ratio of an embedded surface in $R^3$ is defined as the ratio of the area of the surface to power three to the squared enclosed volume. The aim of the present work is to study the minimization of the Willmore energy under fixed isoperimetric ratio when the underlying abstract surface has fixed genus $g\geq 0$. The corresponding problem in the case of spherical surfaces, i.e. $g=0$, was recently solved by Schygulla with different methods.

Euclidean spaces as weak tangents of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We show that in any infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(K,N)$-space at almost every point there exists a Euclidean weak tangent, i.e. there exists a sequence of dilations of the space that converges to a Euclidean space in the pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof follows by considering iterated tangents and the splitting theorem for infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(0,N)$-spaces.

Existence of generalized totally umbilic 2-spheres in perturbed 3-spheres

It was recently shown by R. Souam and E. Toubiana that the (non constantly curved) Berger spheres do not contain totally umbilic surfaces. Nevertheless in this article we show, by perturbative arguments, that all analytic metrics sufficiently close to the round metric $g_{0}$ on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ possess \textsl{generalized} totally umbilic 2-spheres, namely critical points of the conformal Willmore functional $\int_Σ|A^\circ|^{2}\,dμ_γ$. The same is true in the smooth setting provided a suitable non-degeneracy condition on the traceless Ricci tensor holds. The proof involves a gluing process of two different finite-dimensional reduction schemes, a sharp asymptotic analysis of the functional on perturbed umbilic spheres of small radius and a quantitative Schur-type Lemma in order to treat the cases when the traceless Ricci tensor of the perturbation is degenerate but not identically zero. For left-invariant metrics on $SU(2)\cong \mathbb{S}^{3}$ our result implies the existence of uncountably many distinct Willmore spheres.

Immersed Spheres of Finite Total Curvature into Manifolds

We prove that a sequence of possibly branched, weak immersions of the two-sphere $S^2$ into an arbitrary compact riemannian manifold $(M^m,h)$ with uniformly bounded area and uniformly bounded $L^2-$norm of the second fundamental form either collapse to a point or weakly converges as current, modulo extraction of a subsequence, to a Lipschitz mapping of $S^2$ and whose image is made of a connected union of finitely many, possibly branched, weak immersions of $S^2$ with finite total curvature. We prove moreover that if the sequence belongs to a class $γ$ of $π_2(M^m)$ the limiting lipschitz mapping of $S^2$ realizes this class as well.

On the Bakry-Émery condition, the gradient estimates and the Local-to-Global property of RCD*(K,N) metric measure spaces

We prove higher summability and regularity of Γ(f) for functions f in spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery condition BE(K,\infty). As a byproduct, we obtain various equivalent weak formulations of BE(K,N) and we prove the Local-to-Global property of the RCD*(K,N) condition in locally compact metric measure spaces (X,d,m), without assuming a priori the non-branching condition on the metric space.

Existence of immersed spheres minimizing curvature functionals in non-compact 3-manifolds

We study curvature functionals for immersed 2-spheres in non-compact, three-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,h)$ without boundary. First, under the assumption that $(M,h)$ is the euclidean 3-space endowed with a semi-perturbed metric with perturbation small in $C^1$ norm and of compact support, we prove that if there is some point $\bar{x} \in M$ with scalar curvature $R^M(\bar{x})>0$ then there exists a smooth embedding $f:S^2 \hookrightarrow M$ minimizing the Willmore functional $1/4\int |H|^2$, where $H$ is the mean curvature. Second, assuming that $(M,h)$ is of bounded geometry (i.e. bounded sectional curvature and strictly positive injectivity radius) and asymptotically euclidean or hyperbolic we prove that if there is some point $\bar{x} \in M$ with scalar curvature $R^M(\bar{x})>6$ then there exists a smooth immersion $f:S^2 \hookrightarrow M$ minimizing the functional $\int (1/2|A|^2+1)$, where $A$ is the second fundamental form. Finally, adding the bound $K^M \leq 2$ to the last assumptions, we obtain a smooth minimizer $f:S^2 \hookrightarrow M$ for the functional $\int (1/4|H|^2+1)$. The assumptions of the last two theorems are satisfied in a large class of 3-manifolds arising as spacelike timeslices solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation in case of null or negative cosmological constant.

The Conformal Willmore Functional: a Perturbative Approach

The conformal Willmore functional (which is conformal invariant in general Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$) is studied with a perturbative method: the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. Existence of critical points is shown in ambient manifolds $(\mathbb{R}^3, g_ε)$ -where $g_ε$ is a metric close and asymptotic to the euclidean one. With the same technique a non existence result is proved in general Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of dimension three.

Willmore Spheres in Compact Riemannian Manifolds

The paper is devoted to the variational analysis of the Willmore, and other L^2 curvature functionals, among immersions of 2-dimensional surfaces into a compact riemannian m-manifold (M^m,h) with m>2. The goal of the paper is twofold, on one hand, we give the right setting for doing the calculus of variations (including min max methods) of such functionals for immersions into manifolds and, on the other hand, we prove existence results for possibly branched Willmore spheres under various constraints (prescribed homotopy class, prescribed area) or under curvature assumptions for M^m. To this aim, using the integrability by compensation, we develop first the regularity theory for the critical points of such functionals. We then prove a rigidity theorem concerning the relation between CMC and Willmore spheres. Then we prove that, for every non null 2-homotopy class, there exists a representative given by a Lipschitz map from the 2-sphere into M^m realizing a connected family of conformal smooth (possibly branched) area constrained Willmore spheres (as explained in the introduction, this comes as a natural extension of the minimal immersed spheres in homotopy class constructed by Sacks and Uhlembeck in \cite{SaU}, in situations when they do not exist). Moreover, for every A>0 we minimize the Willmore functional among connected families of weak, possibly branched, immersions of the 2-sphere having prescribed total area equal to A and we prove full regularity for the minimizer. Finally, under a mild curvature condition on (M^m,h), we minimize the sum of the area with the square of the L^2 norm of the second fundamental form, among weak possibly branched immersions of the two sphere and we prove the regularity of the minimizer.

Existence of immersed spheres minimizing curvature functionals in compact 3-manifolds

We study curvature functionals for immersed 2-spheres in a compact, three-dimensional Riemannian manifold M. Under the assumption that the sectional curvature of M is strictly positive, we prove the existence of a smoothly immersed sphere minimizing the L^{2} integral of the second fundamental form. Assuming instead that the sectional curvature is less than or equal to 2, and that there exists a point in M with scalar curvature bigger than 6, we obtain a smooth 2-sphere minimizing the integral of 1/4|H|^{2} +1, where H is the mean curvature vector.
