Equidistribution of jellium energy for Coulomb and Riesz Interactions

For general dimension $d$ we prove the equidistribution of energy at the micro-scale in $\mathbb R^d$, for the optimal point configurations appearing in Coulomb gases at zero temperature. At the microscopic scale, i.e. after blow-up at the scale corresponding to the interparticle distance, in the case of Coulomb gases we show that the energy concentration is precisely determined by the macroscopic density of points, independently of the scale. This uses the "jellium energy" which was previously shown to control the next-order term in the large particle number asymptotics of the minimum energy. As a corollary, we obtain sharp error bounds on the discrepancy between the number of points and its expected average of optimal point configurations for Coulomb gases, extending previous results valid only for $2$-dimensional log-gases. For Riesz gases with interaction potentials $g(x)=|x|^{-s}, s\in]\min\{0,d-2\},d[$ and one-dimensional log-gases, we prove the same equidistribution result under an extra hypothesis on the decay of the localized energy, which we conjecture to hold for minimizing configurations. In this case we use the Caffarelli-Silvestre description of the non-local fractional Laplacians in $\mathbb R^d$ to localize the problem.

Matchings in metric spaces, the dual problem and calibrations modulo 2

We show that for a metric space with an even number of points there is a 1-Lipschitz map to a tree-like space with the same matching number. This result gives the first basic version of an unoriented Kantorovich duality. The study of the duality gives a version of global calibrations for 1-chains with coefficients in $\mathbb Z_2$. Finally we extend the results to infinite metric spaces and present a notion of "matching dimension" which arises naturally.

The resolution of the Yang-Mills Plateau problem in super-critical dimensions

We study the minimization problem for the Yang-Mills energy under fixed boundary connection in supercritical dimension $n\geq 5$. We define the natural function space A_{G} in which to formulate this problem in analogy to the space of integral currents used for the classical Plateau problem. The space A_{G} can be also interpreted as a space of weak connections on a "real measure theoretic version" of reflexive sheaves from complex geometry. We prove the weak closure result which ensures the existence of energy-minimizing weak connections in A_{G}. We then prove that any weak connection from A_{G} can be obtained as a L^2-limit of classical connections over bundles with defects. This approximation result is then extended to a Morrey analogue. We prove the optimal regularity result for Yang-Mills local minimizers. On the way to prove this result we establish a Coulomb gauge extraction theorem for weak curvatures with small Yang-Mills density. This generalizes to the general framework of weak $L^2$ curvatures previous works of Meyer-Rivière and Tao-Tian in which respectively a strong approximability property and an admissibility property were assumed in addition.

Next Order Asymptotics and Renormalized Energy for Riesz Interactions

We study systems of $n$ points in the Euclidean space of dimension $d \ge 1$ interacting via a Riesz kernel $|x|^{-s}$ and confined by an external potential, in the regime where $d-2\le s<d$. We also treat the case of logarithmic interactions in dimensions $1$ and $2$. Our study includes and retrieves all cases previously studied in \cite{ss2d,ss1d,rs}. Our approach is based on the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension formula which allows to view the Riesz kernel as the kernel of a (inhomogeneous) local operator in the extended space $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. As $n \to \infty$, we exhibit a next to leading order term in $n^{1+s/d}$ in the asymptotic expansion of the total energy of the system, where the constant term in factor of $n^{1+s/d}$ depends on the microscopic arrangement of the points and is expressed in terms of a "renormalized energy." This new object is expected to penalize the disorder of an infinite set of points in whole space, and to be minimized by Bravais lattice (or crystalline) configurations. We give applications to the statistical mechanics in the case where temperature is added to the system, and identify an expected "crystallization regime." We also obtain a result of separation of the points for minimizers of the energy.

A continuous model of transportation revisited

We review two models of optimal transport, where congestion effects during the transport can be possibly taken into account. The first model is Beckmann's one, where the transport activities are modeled by vector fields with given divergence. The second one is the model by Carlier et al. (SIAM J Control Optim 47: 1330-1350, 2008), which in turn is the continuous reformulation of Wardrop's model on graphs. We discuss the extensions of these models to their natural functional analytic setting and show that they are indeed equivalent, by using Smirnov decomposition theorem for normal 1-currents.

Global gauges and global extensions in optimal spaces

We consider the problem of extending functions ϕ:\to S^n to functions u:B^{n+1}\to S^n for n=2,3. We assume ϕto belong to the critical space W^{1,n} and we construct a W^{1,(n+1,\infty)}-controlled extension u. The Lorentz-Sobolev space W^{1,(n+1,\infty)} is optimal for such controlled extension. Then we use such results to construct global controlled gauges for L^4-connections over trivial SU(2)-bundles in 4 dimensions. This result is a global version of the local Sobolev control of connections obtained by K. Uhlenbeck.

Interior partial regularity for minimal Lp-vectorfields with integer fluxes

We use a new combinatorial technique to prove the optimal interior partial regularity result for Lp-vectorfields with integer fluxes minimizing the Lp-energy. More precisely, we prove that the minimal vectorfields are Hölder outside a set which is locally finite inside the domain. The results continue the program started in collaboration with Tristan Rivière, but this paper is self-contained.

Notes on a slice distance for singular Lp-bundles

A slice distance for the class of weak abelian Lp-bundles in 3 dimensions was introduced in a previous article in collaboration with Tristan Rivière, where it was used to prove the closure of such class of bundles for the weak Lp-convergence. We further investigate this distance here, and we prove more properties of it, for example we show that it is Hölder-continuous on the slices. Using the same distance, we give here a notion of a boundary trace, giving a suitable setting for minimization problems on weak bundles. We then state some conjectures and some open questions.

Asymptotics and quantization for a mean-field equation of higher order

Given a regular bounded domain $Ω\subset\R{2m}$, we describe the limiting behavior of sequences of solutions to the mean field equation of order $2m$, $m\geq 1$, $$(-Δ)^m u=ρ\frac{e^{2mu}}{\int_Ωe^{2mu}dx}\quad\text{in}Ω,$$ under the Dirichlet boundary condition and the bound $0<ρ\leq C$. We emphasize the connection with the problem of prescribing the $Q$-curvature.
