Remarks on the paper "On Gromov's dihedral extremality and rigidity conjectures" by Jinmin Wang, Zhizhang Xie and Guoliang Yu

The recent article "On Gromov's dihedral extremality and rigidity conjectures" by Jinmin Wang, Zhizhang Xie and Guoliang Yu makes a number of claims for self-adjoint extensions of Dirac type operators on manifolds with corners under local boundary conditions. We construct a counterexample to an index computation in that paper which affects the proof of its main result stating a generalisation of Gromov's dihedral extremality conjecture.

Enlargeable metrics on nonspin manifolds

We show that an enlargeable Riemannian metric on a (possibly nonspin) manifold cannot have uniformly positive scalar curvature. This extends a well-known result of Gromov and Lawson to the nonspin setting. We also prove that every noncompact manifold admits a nonenlargeable metric. In proving the first result, we use the main result of the recent paper by Schoen and Yau on minimal hypersurfaces to obstruct positive scalar curvature in arbitrary dimensions. More concretely, we use this to study nonzero degree maps f from a manifold X to the product of the k-sphere with the n-k dimensional torus, with k=1,2,3. When X is a closed oriented manifold endowed with a metric g of positive scalar curvature and the map f is (possibly area) contracting, we prove inequalities relating the lower bound of the scalar curvature of g and the contracting factor of the map f.

On an Index Theorem of Chang, Weinberger and Yu

In this paper we prove a strengthening of a theorem of Chang, Weinberger and Yu on obstructions to the existence of positive scalar curvature metrics on compact manifolds with boundary. They construct a relative index for the Dirac operator, which lives in a relative K-theory group, measuring the difference between the fundamental group of the boundary and of the full manifold. Whenever the Riemannian metric has product structure and positive scalar curvature near the boundary, one can define an absolute index of the Dirac operator taking value in the K-theory of the C*-algebra of fundamental group of the full manifold. This index depends on the metric near the boundary. We prove that the relative index of Chang, Weinberger and Yu is the image of this absolute index under the canonical map of K-theory groups. This has the immediate corollary that positive scalar curvature on the whole manifold implies vanishing of the relative index, giving a conceptual and direct proof of the vanishing theorem of Chang, Weinberger, and Yu. To take the fundamental groups of the manifold and its boundary into account requires working with maximal C* completions of the involved *-algebras. A significant part of this paper is devoted to foundational results regarding these completions.

Right Angled Artin Groups and partial commutation, old and new

We compute the $p$-central and exponent-$p$ series of all right angled Artin groups, and compute the dimensions of their subquotients. We also describe their associated Lie algebras, and relate them to the cohomology ring of the group as well as to a partially commuting polynomial ring and power series ring. We finally show how the growth series of these various objects are related to each other.

Transfer maps in generalized group homology via submanifolds

Let $N \subset M$ be a submanifold embedding of spin manifolds of some codimension $k \geq 1$. A classical result of Gromov and Lawson, refined by Hanke, Pape and Schick, states that $M$ does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature if $k = 2$ and the Dirac operator of $N$ has non-trivial index, provided that suitable conditions are satisfied. In the cases $k=1$ and $k=2$, Zeidler and Kubota, respectively, established more systematic results: There exists a transfer $\mathrm{KO}_\ast(\mathrm{C}^{\ast} π_1 M)\to \mathrm{KO}_{\ast - k}(\mathrm{C}^\ast π_1 N)$ which maps the index class of $M$ to the index class of $N$. The main goal of this article is to construct analogous transfer maps $E_\ast(\mathrm{B}π_1M) \to E_{\ast-k}(\mathrm{B}π_1N)$ for different generalized homology theories $E$ and suitable submanifold embeddings. The design criterion is that it is compatible with the transfer $E_\ast(M) \to E_{\ast-k}(N)$ induced by the inclusion $N \subset M$ for a chosen orientation on the normal bundle. Under varying restrictions on homotopy groups and the normal bundle, we construct transfers in the following cases in particular: In ordinary homology, it works for all codimensions. This slightly generalizes a result of Engel and simplifies his proof. In complex K-homology, we achieve it for $k \leq 3$. For $k \leq 2$, we have a transfer on the equivariant KO-homology of the classifying space for proper actions.

Index Theory and the Baum-Connes conjecture

These notes are based on lectures on index theory, topology, and operator algebras at the "School on High Dimensional Manifold Theory" at the ICTP in Trieste, and at the Seminari di Geometria 2002 in Bologna. We describe how techniques coming from the theory of operator algebras, in particular $C^*$-algebras, can be used to study manifolds. Operator algebras are extensively studied in their own right. We will focus on the basic definitions and properties, and on their relevance to the geometry and topology of manifolds. The link between topology and analysis is provided by index theorems. Starting with the classical Atiyah-Singer index theorem, we will explain several index theorems in detail. Our point of view will be in particular, that an index lives in a canonical way in the K-theory of a certain $C^*$-algebra. The geometrical context will determine, which $C^*$-algebra to use. A central pillar of work in the theory of $C^*$-algebras is the Baum-Connes conjecture. Nevertheless, it has important direct applications to the topology of manifolds, it impliese.g. the Novikov conjecture. We will explain the Baum-Connes conjecture and put it into our context. Several people contributed to these notes by reading preliminary parts and suggesting improvements, in particular Marc Johnson, Roman Sauer, Marco Varisco und Guido Mislin. I am very indebted to all of them. This is an elaboration of the first chapter of the author's contribution to the proceedings of the above mentioned "School on High Dimensional Manifold Theory" 2001 at the ICTP in Trieste.

On computing homology gradients over finite fields

Recently the so-called Atiyah conjecture about l^2-Betti numbers has been disproved. The counterexamples were found using a specific method of computing the spectral measure of a matrix over a complex group ring. We show that in many situations the same method allows to compute homology gradients, i.e. generalizations of l^2-Betti numbers to fields of arbitrary characteristic. As an application we point out that (i) the homology gradient over any field of characteristic different than 2 can be an irrational number, and (ii) there exists a finite CW-complex with the property that the homology gradients of its universal cover taken over different fields have infinitely many different values.

Large time limit and local L^2-index theorems for families

We compute explicitly, and without any extra regularity assumptions, the large time limit of the fibrewise heat operator for Bismut-Lott type superconnections in the L^2-setting. This is motivated by index theory on certain non-compact spaces (families of manifolds with cocompact group action) where the convergence of the heat operator at large time implies refined L^2-index formulas. As applications, we prove a local L^2-index theorem for families of signature operators and an L^2-Bismut-Lott theorem, expressing the Becker-Gottlieb transfer of flat bundles in terms of Kamber-Tandeur classes. With slightly stronger regularity we obtain the respective refined versions: we construct L^2-eta forms and L^2-torsion forms as transgression forms.

Rho-classes, index theory and Stolz' positive scalar curvature sequence

In this paper, we study the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature using methods from coarse geometry. Given a closed spin manifold M with fundamental group G, Stephan Stolz introduced the positive scalar curvature exact sequence, in analogy to the surgery exact sequence in topology. It calculates a structure group of metrics of positive scalar curvature on M (the object we want to understand) in terms of spin-bordism of BG and a somewhat mysterious group R(G). Higson and Roe introduced a K-theory exact sequence in coarse geometry which contains the Baum-Connes assembly map, with one crucial term K(D*G) canonically associated to G. The K-theory groups in question are the home of interesting index invariants and secondary invariants, in particular the rho-class in K_*(D*G) of a metric of positive scalar curvature on a spin manifold. One of our main results is the construction of a map from the Stolz exact sequence to the Higson-Roe exact sequence (commuting with all arrows), using coarse index theory throughout. Our main tool are two index theorems, which we believe to be of independent interest. The first is an index theorem of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Here, assume that Y is a compact spin manifold with boundary, with a Riemannian metric g which is of positive scalar curvature when restricted to the boundary (and with fundamental group G). Because the Dirac operator on the boundary is invertible, one constructs a delocalized APS-index in K_* (D*G). We then show that this class equals the rho-class of the boundary. The second theorem equates a partitioned manifold rho-class of a positive scalar curvature metric to the rho-class of the partitioning hypersurface.

The surgery exact sequence, K-theory and the signature operator

The main result of this paper is a new and direct proof of the natural transformation from the surgery exact sequence in topology to the analytic K-theory sequence of Higson and Roe. Our approach makes crucial use of analytic properties and new index theorems for the signature operator on Galois coverings with boundary. These are of independent interest and form the second main theme of the paper. The main technical novelty is the use of large scale index theory for Dirac type operators that are perturbed by lower order operators.

The Gromoll filtration, KO-characteristic classes and metrics of positive scalar curvature

Let X be a closed m-dimensional spin manifold which admits a metric of positive scalar curvature and let Pos(X) be the space of all such metrics. For any g in Pos(X), Hitchin used the KO-valued alpha-invariant to define a homomorphism A_{n-1} from π_{n-1}(Pos(X) to KO_{m+n}. He then showed that A_0 is not 0 if m = 8k or 8k+1 and that A_1 is not 0 if m = 8k-1 or 8$. In this paper we use Hitchin's methods and extend these results by proving that A_{8j+1-m} is not 0 whenever m>6 and 8j - m >= 0. The new input are elements with non-trivial alpha-invariant deep down in the Gromoll filtration of the group Γ^{n+1} = π_0(\Diff(D^n, \del)). We show that α(Γ^{8j+2}_{8j-5}) is not 0 for j>0. This information about elements existing deep in the Gromoll filtration is the second main new result of this note.

The space of metrics of positive scalar curvature

We study the topology of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics on high dimensional spheres and other spin manifolds. Our main result provides elements of infinite order in higher homotopy and homology groups of these spaces, which, in contrast to previous approaches, are of infinite order and survive in the (observer) moduli space of such metrics. Along the way we construct smooth fiber bundles over spheres whose total spaces have non-vanishing A-hat-genera, thus establishing the non-multiplicativity of the A-hat-genus in fibre bundles with simply connected base.

The topology of positive scalar curvature

In this survey article, given a smooth closed manifold M we study the space of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on M. A long-standing question is: when is this space non-empty (i.e. when does M admit a metric of positive scalar curvature)? More generally: what is the topology of this space? For example, what are its homotopy groups? Higher index theory of the Dirac operator is the basic tool to address these questions. This has seen tremendous development in recent years, and in this survey we will discuss some of the most pertinent examples. In particular, we will show how advancements of large scale index theory (also called coarse index theory) give rise to new types of obstructions, and provide the tools for a systematic study of the existence and classification problem via the K-theory of C*-algebras. This is part of a program "mapping the topology of positive scalar curvature to analysis". In addition, we will show how advanced surgery theory and smoothing theory can be used to construct the first elements of infinite order in the k-th homotopy groups of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature for arbitrarily large k. Moreover, these examples are the first ones which remain non-trivial in the moduli space of such metrics.

A Counterexample to a Conjecture about Positive Scalar Curvature

Conjecture 1 of Stanley Chang: "Positive scalar curvature of totally nonspin manifolds" asserts that a closed smooth manifold M with non-spin universal covering admits a metric of positive scalar curvature if and only if a certain homological condition is satisfied. We present a counterexample to this conjecture, based on the counterexample to the unstable Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture given in Schick: "A counterexample to the (unstable) Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture".

Landweber exact formal group laws and smooth cohomology theories

The main aim of this paper is the construction of a smooth (sometimes called differential) extension \hat{MU} of the cohomology theory complex cobordism MU, using cycles for \hat{MU}(M) which are essentially proper maps W\to M with a fixed U(n)-structure and U(n)-connection on the (stable) normal bundle of W\to M. Crucial is that this model allows the construction of a product structure and of pushdown maps for this smooth extension of MU, which have all the expected properties. Moreover, we show, using the Landweber exact functor principle, that \hat{R}(M):=\hat{MU}(M)\otimes_{MU^*}R defines a multiplicative smooth extension of R(M):=MU(M)\otimes_{MU^*}R whenever R is a Landweber exact MU*-module. An example for this construction is a new way to define a multiplicative smooth K-theory.

A parametrized version of the Borsuk Ulam theorem

The main result of this note is a parametrized version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. We show that for a continuous family of Borsuk-Ulam situations, parameterized by points of a compact manifold W, its solution set also depends continuously on the parameter space W. Continuity here means that the solution set supports a homology class which maps onto the fundamental class of W. When W is a subset of Euclidean space, we also show how to construct such a continuous family starting from a family depending in the same way continuously on the points of the boundary of W. This solves a problem related to a conjecture which is relevant for the construction of equilibrium strategies in repeated two-player games with incomplete information. A new method (of independent interest) used in this context is a canonical symmetric squaring construction in Cech homology with coefficients in Z/2Z.

Differential K-theory. A survey

Generalized differential cohomology theories, in particular differential K-theory (often called "smooth K-theory"), are becoming an important tool in differential geometry and in mathematical physics. In this survey, we describe the developments of the recent decades in this area. In particular, we discuss axiomatic characterizations of differential K-theory (and that these uniquely characterize differential K-theory). We describe several explicit constructions, based on vector bundles, on families of differential operators, or using homotopy theory and classifying spaces. We explain the most important properties, in particular about the multiplicative structure and push-forward maps and will state versions of the Riemann-Roch theorem and of Atiyah-Singer family index theorem for differential K-theory.

Differential orbifold K-Theory

We construct differential equivariant K-theory of representable smooth orbifolds as a ring valued functor with the usual properties of a differential extension of a cohomology theory. For proper submersions (with smooth fibres) we construct a push-forward map in differential equivariant K-theory. Finally, we construct a non-degenerate intersection pairing with values in C/Z for the subclass of smooth orbifolds which can be written as global quotients by a finite group action. We construct a real subfunctor of our theory, where the pairing restricts to a non-degenerate R/Z-valued pairing.

Hodge Theory on Metric Spaces

Hodge theory is a beautiful synthesis of geometry, topology, and analysis, which has been developed in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. On the other hand, spaces of images, which are important in the mathematical foundations of vision and pattern recognition, do not fit this framework. This motivates us to develop a version of Hodge theory on metric spaces with a probability measure. We believe that this constitutes a step towards understanding the geometry of vision. The appendix by Anthony Baker provides a separable, compact metric space with infinite dimensional α-scale homology.

Corrigendum: Uniqueness of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories

The proof of Theorem 7.12 of "Uniqueness of smooth cohomology theories" by the authors of this note is not correct. The said theorem identifies the flat part of a differential extension of a generalized cohomology theory E with ER/Z (there called "smooth extension"). In this note, we give a correct proof. Moreover, we prove slightly stronger versions of some of the other results of that paper.

Equivariant geometric K-homology for compact Lie group actions

Let G be a compact Lie-group, X a compact G-CW-complex. We define equivariant geometric K-homology groups K^G_*(X), using an obvious equivariant version of the (M,E,f)-picture of Baum-Douglas for K-homology. We define explicit natural transformations to and from equivariant K-homology defined via KK-theory (the "official" equivariant K-homology groups) and show that these are isomorphism.

Periodic twisted cohomology and T-duality

The initial motivation of this work was to give a topological interpretation of two-periodic twisted de-Rham cohomology which is generalizable to arbitrary coefficients. To this end we develop a sheaf theory in the context of locally compact topological stacks with emphasis on the construction of the sheaf theory operations in unbounded derived categories, elements of Verdier duality and integration. The main result is the construction of a functorial periodization functor associated to a U(1)-gerbe. As applications we verify the $T$-duality isomorphism in periodic twisted cohomology and in periodic twisted orbispace cohomology.

Uniqueness of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories

We provide an axiomatic framework for the study of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories. Our main results are about the uniqeness of smooth extensions, and the identification of the flat theory with the R/Z-theory. In particular, we show that there is a unique smooth extension of K-theory and of MU-cobordism with a unique multiplication, and that the flat theory in these cases is naturally isomorphic to the homotopy theorist's version of the cohomology theory with R/Z-coefficients. For this we only require a small set of natural compatibility conditions.

A Geometric Description of Equivariant K-Homology for Proper Actions

Let G be a discrete group and let X be a G-finite, proper G-CW-complex. We prove that Kasparov's equivariant K-homology groups KK^G(C_0(X),\C) are isomorphic to the geometric equivariant K-homology groups of X that are obtained by making the geometric K-homology theory of Baum and Douglas equivariant in the natural way. This reconciles the original and current formulations of the Baum-Connes conjecture for discrete groups.

Homotopy groups of the moduli space of metrics of positive scalar curvature

We prove that for many degrees in a stable range the homotopy groups of the moduli space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on S^n and on other manifolds are non-trivial. This is achieved by further developing and then applying a family version of the surgery construction of Gromov-Lawson to an exotic smooth families of spheres due to Hatcher. As described, this works for all manifolds of suitable dimension and for the quotient of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature by the (free) action of the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which fix a point and its tangent space. We also construct special manifolds where the quotient of the space of metrcis of positive scalar curvature by the full diffeomorphism group has non-trivial higher homotopy groups.

Smooth K-Theory

We construct an analytic multiplicative model of smooth K-theory. We further introduce the notion of a smooth K-orientation of a proper submersion and define the associated push-forward which satisfies functoriality, compatibility with pull-back diagrams, and projection and bordism formulas. We construct a multiplicative lift of the Chern character from smooth K-theory to smooth rational cohomology and verify that the cohomological version of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for families lifts to smooth cohomology.

Finite group extensions and the Baum-Connes conjecture

In this note, we exhibit a method to prove the Baum-Connes conjecture (with coefficients) for extensions with finite quotients of certain groups which already satisfy the Baum-Connes conjecture. Interesting examples to which this method applies are torsion-free finite extensions of the pure braid groups, e.g. the full braid groups, or certain fundamental groups of complements of links in S^3.

On a conjecture of Daniel H. Gottlieb

We give a counterexample to a conjecture of D.H. Gottlieb and prove a strengthened version of it. The conjecture says that a map from a finite CW-complex X to an aspherical CW-complex Y with non-zero Euler characteristic can have non-trivial degree (suitably defined) only if the centralizer of the image of the fundamental group of X is trivial. As a corollary we show that in the above situation all components of non-zero degree maps in the space of maps from X to Y are contractible.

On the topology of T-duality

In string theory, the concept of T-duality between two principal U(1)-bundles E_1 and E_2 over the same base space B, together with cohomology classes $h_1\in H^3(E_1)$ and $h_2\in H^3(E_2)$, has been introduced. One of the main virtues of T-duality is that $h_1$-twisted K-theory of $E_1$ is isomorphic to $h_2$-twisted K-theory of $E_2$. In this paper, a new, very topological concept of T-duality is introduced. The study pairs (E,h) as above from a topological point of view and construct a classifying space of such pairs. Using this, we construct a universal dual pair to a given pair. Our construction immediately gives a number of known and new properties of the dual. In particular it implies existence of a dual of any pair (E,h), and it also describes the ambiguity upto which the dual is well defined. In order to deal with twisted K-theory, some care is needed, in particular when dealing with naturality questions, because the twisted K-theory depends on the explicit model for the twists and the twisted theory --care which is missing in some of the existing literature. We illustrate the use of T-duality by some explicit calculations of twisted K-groups.

Sheaf theory for stacks in manifolds and twisted cohomology for S^1-gerbes

This is the first of a series of papers on sheaf theory on smooth and topological stacks and its applications. The main result of the present paper is the characterization of the twisted (by a closed integral three-form) de Rham complex on a manifold. As an object in the derived category it will be related with the push-forward of the constant sheaf from a S^1-gerbe with Dixmier-Douady class represented by the three-form. In order to formulate and prove this result we develop in detail the foundations of sheaf theory for smooth stacks.

Real versus complex K-theory using Kasparov's bivariant KK-theory

In this paper, we use the KK-theory of Kasparov to prove exactness of sequences relating the K-theory of a real C^*-algebra and of its complexification (generalizing results of Boersema). We use this to relate the real version of the Baum-Connes conjecture for a discrete group to its complex counterpart. In particular, the complex Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism if and only if the real one is, thus reproving a result of Baum and Karoubi. After inverting 2, the same is true for the injectivity or surjectivity part alone.
