Tambara-Yamagami, loop groups, bundles and KK-theory

This paper is part of a sequence interpreting quantities of conformal field theories K-theoretically. Here we give geometric constructions of the associated module categories (modular invariants, nimreps, etc). In particular, we give a KK-theory interpretation of all modular invariants for the loop groups of tori, as well as most known modular invariants of loop groups. In addition, we find unexpectedly that the Tambara-Yamagami fusion category has an elegant description as bundles over a groupoid, and use that to interpret its module categories as KK-elements. We establish reconstruction for the doubles of all Tambara-Yamagami categories, generalizing work of Bischoff to even-order groups. We conclude by relating the modular group representations coming from finite groups and loop groups to the Chern character and to the Fourier-Mukai transform

Non-unitary fusion categories and their doubles via endomorphisms

We realise non-unitary fusion categories using subfactor-like methods, and compute their quantum doubles and modular data. For concreteness we focus on generalising the Haagerup-Izumi family of Q-systems. For example, we construct endomorphism realisations of the (non-unitary) Yang-Lee model, and non-unitary analogues of one of the even subsystems of the Haagerup subfactor and of the Grossman-Snyder system. We supplement Izumi's equations for identifying the half-braidings, which were incomplete even in his Q-system setting. We conjecture a remarkably simple form for the modular S and T matrices of the doubles of these fusion categories. We would expect all of these doubles to be realised as the category of modules of a rational VOA and conformal net of factors. We expect our approach will also suffice to realise the non-semisimple tensor categories arising in logarithmic conformal field theories.

Automorphic forms for triangle groups

For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.

Modular Invariants and Twisted Equivariant K-theory II: Dynkin diagram symmetries

The most basic structure of chiral conformal field theory (CFT) is the Verlinde ring. Freed-Hopkins-Teleman have expressed the Verlinde ring for the CFT's associated to loop groups, as twisted equivariant K-theory. We build on their work to express K-theoretically the structures of full CFT. In particular, the modular invariant partition functions (which essentially parametrise the possible full CFTs) have a rich interpretation within von Neumann algebras (subfactors), which has led to the developments of structures of full CFT such as the full system (fusion ring of defect lines), nimrep (cylindrical partition function), alpha-induction etc. Modular categorical interpretations for these have followed. For the generic families of modular invariants (i.e. those associated to Dynkin diagram symmetries), we provide a K-theoretic framework for these other CFT structures, and show how they relate to D-brane charges and charge-groups. We also study conformal embeddings and the E7 modular invariant of SU(2), as well as some families of finite group doubles. This new K-theoretic framework allows us to simplify and extend the less transparent, more ad hoc descriptions of these structures obtained previously within CFT.

Much ado about Mathieu

Eguchi, Ooguri and Tachikawa have observed that the elliptic genus of type II string theory on K3 surfaces appears to possess a Moonshine for the largest Mathieu group. Subsequent work by several people established a candidate for the elliptic genus twisted by each element of M24. In this paper we prove that the resulting sequence of class functions are true characters of M24, proving the Eguchi-Ooguri-Tachikawa conjecture. We prove the evenness property of the multiplicities, as conjectured by several authors. We also identify the role group cohomology plays in both K3-Mathieu Moonshine and Monstrous Moonshine; in particular this gives a cohomological interpretation for the non-Fricke elements in Norton's Generalised Monstrous Moonshine conjecture. We investigate the intriguing proposal of Gaberdiel-Hohenegger-Volpato that K3-Mathieu Moonshine lifts to the Conway group Co1.

The theory of vector-modular forms for the modular group

We explain the basic ideas, describe with proofs the main results, and demonstrate the effectiveness, of an evolving theory of vector-valued modular forms (vvmf). To keep the exposition concrete, we restrict here to the special case of the modular group. Among other things,we construct vvmf for arbitrary multipliers, solve the Mittag-Leffler problem here, establish Serre duality and find a dimension formula for holomorphic vvmf, all in far greater generality than has been done elsewhere. More important, the new ideas involved are sufficiently simple and robust that this entire theory extends directly to any genus-0 Fuchsian group.

Near-group fusion categories and their doubles

A near-group fusion category is a fusion category C where all but 1 simple objects are invertible. Examples of these include the Tambara-Yamagami categories and the even sectors of the E6 and affine-D5 subfactors, though there are infinitely many others. We classify the near-group fusion categories, and compute their doubles and the modular data relevant to conformal field theory. Among other things, we explicitly construct over 40 new finite depth subfactors, with Jones index ranging from around 6.85 to around 14.93. We expect all of these doubles to be realised by rational conformal field theories.

The exoticness and realisability of twisted Haagerup-Izumi modular data

The quantum double of the Haagerup subfactor, the first irreducible finite depth subfactor with index above 4, is the most obvious candidate for exotic modular data. We show that its modular data DHg fits into a family $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$, where $n\ge 0$ and $ω\in \bbZ_{2n+1}$. We show $D^0 Hg_{2n+1}$ is related to the subfactors Izumi hypothetically associates to the cyclic groups $Z_{2n+1}$. Their modular data comes equipped with canonical and dual canonical modular invariants; we compute the corresponding alpha-inductions etc. In addition, we show there are (respectively) 1, 2, 0 subfactors of Izumi type $Z_7$, $Z_9$ and $Z_3^2$, and find numerical evidence for 2, 1, 1, 1, 2 subfactors of Izumi type $Z_{11},Z_{13},Z_{15},Z_{17},Z_{19}$ (previously, Izumi had shown uniqueness for $Z_3$ and $Z_5$), and we identify their modular data. We explain how DHg (more generally $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$) is a graft of the quantum double DSym(3) (resp. the twisted double $D^ωD_{2n+1}$) by affine so(13) (resp. so(4n^2+4n+5)) at level 2. We discuss the vertex operator algebra (or conformal field theory) realisation of the modular data $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$. For example we show there are exactly 2 possible character vectors (giving graded dimensions of all modules) for the Haagerup VOA at central charge c=8. It seems unlikely that any of this twisted Haagerup-Izumi modular data can be regarded as exotic, in any reasonable sense.

The W_N minimal model classification

We first rigourously establish, for any N, that the toroidal modular invariant partition functions for the (not necessarily unitary) W_N(p,q) minimal models biject onto a well-defined subset of those of the SU(N)xSU(N) Wess-Zumino-Witten theories at level (p-N,q-N). This permits considerable simplifications to the proof of the Cappelli-Itzykson-Zuber classification of Virasoro minimal models. More important, we obtain from this the complete classification of all modular invariants for the W_3(p,q) minimal models. All should be realised by rational conformal field theories. Previously, only those for the unitary models, i.e. W_3(p,p+1), were classified. For all N our correspondence yields for free an extensive list of W_N(p,q) modular invariants. The W_3 modular invariants, like the Virasoro minimal models, all factorise into SU(3) modular invariants, but this fails in general for larger N. We also classify the SU(3)xSU(3) modular invariants, and find there a new infinite series of exceptionals.

Symmetries of the Kac-Peterson Modular Matrices of Affine Algebras

The characters $χ_μ$ of nontwisted affine algebras at fixed level define in a natural way a representation $R$ of the modular group $SL_2(Z)$. The matrices in the image $R(SL_2(Z))$ are called the Kac-Peterson modular matrices, and describe the modular behaviour of the characters. In this paper we consider all levels of $(A_{r_1}\oplus\cdots\oplus A_{r_s})^{(1)}$, and for each of these find all permutations of the highest weights which commute with the corresponding Kac-Peterson matrices. This problem is equivalent to the classification of automorphism invariants of conformal field theories, and its solution, especially considering its simplicity, is a major step toward the classification of all Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories.

The level 2 and 3 modular invariants of SU(n)

In this paper we explicitly classify all modular invariant partition functions for su(n) at level 2 and 3. Previously, these were known only for level 1. The level 2 exceptionals exist at n=10, 16, and 28; the level 3 exceptionals exist at n=5, 9, and 21. One of these is new, but the others were all anticipated by the "rank-level duality" relating su(n) level k and su(k) level n. The main recent result which this paper rests on is the classification of "ADE_7-type invariants".

The Low Level Modular Invariant Partition Functions of Rank-Two Algebras

Using the self-dual lattice method, we make a systematic search for modular invariant partition functions of the affine algebras $g\*{(1)}$ of $g=A_2$, $A_1+A_1$, $G_2$, and $C_2$. Unlike previous computer searches, this method is necessarily complete. We succeed in finding all physical invariants for $A_2$ at levels $\le 32$, for $G_2$ at levels $\le 31$, for $C_2$ at levels $\le 26$, and for $A_1+A_1$ at levels $k_1=k_2\le 21$. This work thus completes a recent $A_2$ classification proof, where the levels $k=3,5,6,9,12,15,21$ had been left out. We also compute the dimension of the (Weyl-folded) commutant for these algebras and levels.

The Classification of Affine SU(3) Modular Invariant Partition Functions

A complete classification of the WZNW modular invariant partition functions is known for very few affine algebras and levels, the most significant being all levels of SU(2), and level 1 of all simple algebras. In this paper we solve the classification problem for SU(3) modular invariant partition functions. Our approach will also be applicable to other affine Lie algebras, and we include some preliminary work in that direction, including a sketch of a new proof for SU(2).
