Spectral Sequence Computation of Higher Twisted $K$-Groups of $ SU(n)$

Motivated by the Freed-Hopkins-Teleman theorem we study graded equivariant higher twists of $K$-theory for the groups $G = SU(n)$ induced by exponential functors. We compute the rationalisation of these groups for all $n$ and all non-trivial functors. Classical twists use the determinant functor and yield equivariant bundles of compact operators that are classified by Dixmier-Douady theory. Their equivariant $K$-theory reproduces the Verlinde ring of conformal field theory. Higher twists give equivariant bundles of stable UHF algebras, which can be classified using stable homotopy theory. Rationally, only the $K$-theory in degree $\dim(G)$ is again non-trivial. The non-vanishing group is a quotient of a localisation of the representation ring $R(G) \otimes \mathbb{Q}$ by a higher fusion ideal $J_{F,\mathbb{Q}}$. We give generators for this ideal and prove that these can be obtained as derivatives of a potential. For the exterior algebra functor, which is exponential, we show that the determinant bundle over $LSU(n)$ has a non-commutative counterpart where the fibre is the unitary group of the UHF algebra.

Equivariant higher twisted K-theory of SU(n) for exponential functor twists

We prove that each exponential functor on the category of finite-dimensional complex inner product spaces and isomorphisms gives rise to an equivariant higher (ie. non-classical) twist of $K$-theory over $G=SU(n)$. This twist is represented by a Fell bundle $\mathcal{E} \to \mathcal{G}$, which reduces to the basic gerbe for the top exterior power functor. The groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ comes equipped with a $G$-action and an augmentation map $\mathcal{G} \to G$, that is an equivariant equivalence. The $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{E})$ associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is stably isomorphic to the section algebra of a locally trivial bundle with stabilised strongly self-absorbing fibres. Using a version of the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we compute the equivariant higher twisted $K$-groups $K^G_*(C^*(\mathcal{E}))$ for arbitrary exponential functor twists over $SU(2)$, and also over $SU(3)$ after rationalisation.

$K$-theory of AF-algebras from braided C*-tensor categories

Renault, Wassermann, Handelman and Rossmann (early 1980s) and Evans and Gould (1994) explicitly described the $K$-theory of certain unital AF-algebras $A$ as (quotients of) polynomial rings. In this paper, we show that in each case the multiplication in the polynomial ring (quotient) is induced by a $*$-homomorphism $A\otimes A\to A$ arising from a unitary braiding on a C*-tensor category and essentially defined by Erlijman and Wenzl (2007). We also present some new explicit calculations based on the work of Gepner, Fuchs and others. Specifically, we perform computations for the rank two compact Lie groups SU(3), Sp(4) and G$_2$ that are analogous to the Evans-Gould computation for the rank one compact Lie group SU(2). The Verlinde rings are the fusion rings of Wess-Zumino-Witten models in conformal field theory or, equivalently, of certain related C*-tensor categories. Freed, Hopkins and Teleman (early 2000s) realized these rings via twisted equivariant $K$-theory. Inspired by this, our long-term goal is to realize these rings in a simpler $K$-theoretical manner, avoiding the technicalities of loop group analysis. As a step in this direction, we note that the Verlinde rings can be recovered as above in certain special cases.

Classification of Module Categories for $SO(3)_{2m}$

The main goal of this paper is to classify $\ast$-module categories for the $SO(3)_{2m}$ modular tensor category. This is done by classifying $SO(3)_{2m}$ nimrep graphs and cell systems, and in the process we also classify the $SO(3)$ modular invariants. There are module categories of type $\mathcal{A}$, $\mathcal{E}$ and their conjugates, but there are no orbifold (or type $\mathcal{D}$) module categories. We present a construction of a subfactor with principal graph given by the fusion rules of the fundamental generator of the $SO(3)_{2m}$ modular category. We also introduce a Frobenius algebra $A$ which is an $SO(3)$ generalisation of (higher) preprojective algebras, and derive a finite resolution of $A$ as a left $A$-module along with its Hilbert series.

Realizing the braided Temperley-Lieb-Jones C*-tensor categories as Hilbert C*-modules

We associate to each Temperley-Lieb-Jones C*-tensor category $\mathcal{T}\!\mathcal{L}\mathcal{J}(δ)$ with parameter $δ$ in the discrete range $\{2\cos(π/(k+2))\,:\,k=1,2,\ldots\}\cup\{2\}$ a certain C*-algebra $\mathcal{B}$ of compact operators. We use the unitary braiding on $\mathcal{T}\!\mathcal{L}\mathcal{J}(δ)$ to equip the category $\mathrm{Mod}_{\mathcal{B}}$ of (right) Hilbert $\mathcal{B}$-modules with the structure of a braided C*-tensor category. We show that $\mathcal{T}\!\mathcal{L}\mathcal{J}(δ)$ is equivalent, as a braided C*-tensor category, to the full subcategory $\mathrm{Mod}_{\mathcal{B}}^f$ of $\mathrm{Mod}_{\mathcal{B}}$ whose objects are those modules which admit a finite orthonormal basis. Finally, we indicate how these considerations generalize to arbitrary finitely generated rigid braided C*-tensor categories.

Spectral Measures for $G_2$ II: finite subgroups

Joint spectral measures associated to the rank two Lie group $G_2$, including the representation graphs for the irreducible representations of $G_2$ and its maximal torus, nimrep graphs associated to the $G_2$ modular invariants have been studied. In this paper we study the joint spectral measures for the McKay graphs (or representation graphs) of finite subgroups of $G_2$. Using character theoretic methods we classify all non-conjugate embeddings of each subgroup into the fundamental representation of $G_2$ and present their McKay graphs, some of which are new.

Non-unitary fusion categories and their doubles via endomorphisms

We realise non-unitary fusion categories using subfactor-like methods, and compute their quantum doubles and modular data. For concreteness we focus on generalising the Haagerup-Izumi family of Q-systems. For example, we construct endomorphism realisations of the (non-unitary) Yang-Lee model, and non-unitary analogues of one of the even subsystems of the Haagerup subfactor and of the Grossman-Snyder system. We supplement Izumi's equations for identifying the half-braidings, which were incomplete even in his Q-system setting. We conjecture a remarkably simple form for the modular S and T matrices of the doubles of these fusion categories. We would expect all of these doubles to be realised as the category of modules of a rational VOA and conformal net of factors. We expect our approach will also suffice to realise the non-semisimple tensor categories arising in logarithmic conformal field theories.

Spectral measures associated to rank two Lie groups and finite subgroups of $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$

Spectral measures for fundamental representations of the rank two Lie groups $SU(3)$, $Sp(2)$ and $G_2$ have been studied. Since these groups have rank two, these spectral measures can be defined as measures over their maximal torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ and are invariant under an action of the corresponding Weyl group, which is a subgroup of $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. Here we consider spectral measures invariant under an action of the other finite subgroups of $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. These spectral measures are all associated with fundamental representations of other rank two Lie groups, namely $\mathbb{T}^2=U(1) \times U(1)$, $U(1) \times SU(2)$, $U(2)$, $SU(2) \times SU(2)$, $SO(4)$ and $PSU(3)$.

Spectral Measures for $Sp(2)$

Spectral measures provide invariants for braided subfactors via fusion modules. In this paper we study joint spectral measures associated to the compact connected rank two Lie group $SO(5)$ and its double cover the compact connected, simply-connected rank two Lie group $Sp(2)$, including the McKay graphs for the irreducible representations of $Sp(2)$ and $SO(5)$ and their maximal tori, and fusion modules associated to the $Sp(2)$ modular invariants.

Braided Subfactors, Spectral Measures, Planar algebras and Calabi-Yau algebras associated to SU(3) modular invariants

Braided subfactors of von Neumann algebras provide a framework for studying two dimensional conformal field theories and their modular invariants. We review this in the context of SU(3) conformal field theories through corresponding SU(3) braided subfactors and various subfactor invariants including spectral measures for the nimrep graphs, A_2-planar algebras and almost Calabi-Yau algebras.

Modular Invariants and Twisted Equivariant K-theory II: Dynkin diagram symmetries

The most basic structure of chiral conformal field theory (CFT) is the Verlinde ring. Freed-Hopkins-Teleman have expressed the Verlinde ring for the CFT's associated to loop groups, as twisted equivariant K-theory. We build on their work to express K-theoretically the structures of full CFT. In particular, the modular invariant partition functions (which essentially parametrise the possible full CFTs) have a rich interpretation within von Neumann algebras (subfactors), which has led to the developments of structures of full CFT such as the full system (fusion ring of defect lines), nimrep (cylindrical partition function), alpha-induction etc. Modular categorical interpretations for these have followed. For the generic families of modular invariants (i.e. those associated to Dynkin diagram symmetries), we provide a K-theoretic framework for these other CFT structures, and show how they relate to D-brane charges and charge-groups. We also study conformal embeddings and the E7 modular invariant of SU(2), as well as some families of finite group doubles. This new K-theoretic framework allows us to simplify and extend the less transparent, more ad hoc descriptions of these structures obtained previously within CFT.

Near-group fusion categories and their doubles

A near-group fusion category is a fusion category C where all but 1 simple objects are invertible. Examples of these include the Tambara-Yamagami categories and the even sectors of the E6 and affine-D5 subfactors, though there are infinitely many others. We classify the near-group fusion categories, and compute their doubles and the modular data relevant to conformal field theory. Among other things, we explicitly construct over 40 new finite depth subfactors, with Jones index ranging from around 6.85 to around 14.93. We expect all of these doubles to be realised by rational conformal field theories.

A2-Planar Algebras I

We give a diagrammatic presentation of the A_2-Temperley-Lieb algebra. Generalizing Jones' notion of a planar algebra, we formulate an A_2-planar algebra motivated by Kuperberg's A_2-spider. This A_2-planar algebra contains a subfamily of vector spaces which will capture the double complex structure pertaining to the subfactor for a finite SU(3) ADE graph with a flat cell system, including both the periodicity three coming from the A_2-Temperley-Lieb algebra as well as the periodicity two coming from the subfactor basic construction. We use an A_2-planar algebra to obtain a description of the (Jones) planar algebra for the Wenzl subfactor in terms of generators and relations.

A2-Planar Algebras II: Planar Modules

Generalizing Jones's notion of a planar algebra, we have previously introduced an A_2-planar algebra capturing the structure contained in the double complex pertaining to the subfactor for a finite SU(3) ADE graph with a flat cell system. We now introduce the notion of modules over an A_2-planar algebra, and describe certain irreducible Hilbert A_2-TL-modules. We construct an A_2-graph planar algebra associated to each pair (G,W) given by an SU(3) ADE graph G and a cell system W on G. A partial modular decomposition of these A_2-graph planar algebras is achieved.

On the homology of almost Calabi-Yau algebras associated to SU(3) modular invariants

We compute the Hochschild homology and cohomology, and cyclic homology, of almost Calabi-Yau algebras for SU(3) ADE graphs. These almost Calabi-Yau algebras are a higher rank analogue of the pre-projective algebras for Dynkin diagrams, which are SU(2)-related constructions. The Hochschild (co)homology and cyclic homology of A can be regarded as invariants for the braided subfactors associated to the SU(3) modular invariants.

Spectral Measures and Generating Series for Nimrep Graphs in Subfactor Theory II: SU(3)

We complete the computation of spectral measures for SU(3) nimrep graphs arising in subfactor theory, namely the SU(3) ADE graphs associated with SU(3) modular invariants and the McKay graphs of finite subgroups of SU(3). For the SU(2) graphs the spectral measures distill onto very special subsets of the semicircle/circle, whilst for the SU(3) graphs the spectral measures distill onto very special subsets of the discoid/torus. The theory of nimreps allows us to compute these measures precisely. We have previously determined spectral measures for some nimrep graphs arising in subfactor theory, particularly those associated with all SU(2) modular invariants, all subgroups of SU(2), the torus, SU(3), and some SU(3) graphs.

The exoticness and realisability of twisted Haagerup-Izumi modular data

The quantum double of the Haagerup subfactor, the first irreducible finite depth subfactor with index above 4, is the most obvious candidate for exotic modular data. We show that its modular data DHg fits into a family $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$, where $n\ge 0$ and $ω\in \bbZ_{2n+1}$. We show $D^0 Hg_{2n+1}$ is related to the subfactors Izumi hypothetically associates to the cyclic groups $Z_{2n+1}$. Their modular data comes equipped with canonical and dual canonical modular invariants; we compute the corresponding alpha-inductions etc. In addition, we show there are (respectively) 1, 2, 0 subfactors of Izumi type $Z_7$, $Z_9$ and $Z_3^2$, and find numerical evidence for 2, 1, 1, 1, 2 subfactors of Izumi type $Z_{11},Z_{13},Z_{15},Z_{17},Z_{19}$ (previously, Izumi had shown uniqueness for $Z_3$ and $Z_5$), and we identify their modular data. We explain how DHg (more generally $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$) is a graft of the quantum double DSym(3) (resp. the twisted double $D^ωD_{2n+1}$) by affine so(13) (resp. so(4n^2+4n+5)) at level 2. We discuss the vertex operator algebra (or conformal field theory) realisation of the modular data $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$. For example we show there are exactly 2 possible character vectors (giving graded dimensions of all modules) for the Haagerup VOA at central charge c=8. It seems unlikely that any of this twisted Haagerup-Izumi modular data can be regarded as exotic, in any reasonable sense.

Ocneanu Cells and Boltzmann Weights for the SU(3) ADE Graphs

We determine the cells, whose existence has been announced by Ocneanu, on all the candidate nimrep graphs except $\mathcal{E}_4^{(12)}$ proposed by di Francesco and Zuber for the SU(3) modular invariants classified by Gannon. This enables the Boltzmann weights to be computed for the corresponding integrable statistical mechanical models and provide the framework for studying corresponding braided subfactors to realise all the SU(3) modular invariants as well as a framework for a new SU(3) planar algebra theory.

Spectral Measures and Generating Series for Nimrep Graphs in Subfactor Theory

We determine spectral measures for some nimrep graphs arising in subfactor theory, particularly those associated with SU(3) modular invariants and subgroups of SU(3). Our methods also give an alternative approach to deriving the results of Banica and Bisch for ADE graphs and subgroups of SU(2) and explain the connection between their results for affine ADE graphs and the Kostant polynomials. We also look at the Hilbert generating series of associated pre-projective algebras.

Orbifold subfactors from Hecke algebras II --- Quantum doubles and braiding ---

A. Ocneanu has observed that a mysterious orbifold phenomenon occurs in the system of the M_infinity-M_infinity bimodules of the asymptotic inclusion, a subfactor analogue of the quantum double, of the Jones subfactor of type A_2n+1. We show that this is a general phenomenon and identify some of his orbifolds with the ones in our sense as subfactors given as simultaneous fixed point algebras by working on the Hecke algebra subfactors of type A of Wenzl. That is, we work on their asymptotic inclusions and show that the M_infinity-M_infinity bimodules are described by certain orbifolds (with ghosts) for SU(3)_3k. We actually compute several examples of the (dual) principal graphs of the asymptotic inclusions. As a corollary of the identification of Ocneanu's orbifolds with ours, we show that a non-degenerate braiding exists on the even vertices of D_2n, n>2.
