Degenerations, fibrations and higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models

We study semi-stable degenerations of quasi-Fano varieties to unions of two pieces. We conjecture that the higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models mirror to these two pieces can be glued together to lower rank Landau-Ginzburg models which are mirror to the original quasi-Fano varieties. We prove this conjecture by relating their Euler characteristics, generalized functional invariants as well as periods. We also use it to conjecture a relation between the degenerations to the normal cones and the fibrewise compactifications of higher rank Landau-Ginzburg models. Furthermore, we use it to iterate the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture and obtain higher codimension Calabi-Yau fibrations.

$K_2$ and quantum curves

A 2015 conjecture of Codesido-Grassi-Mariño in topological string theory relates the enumerative invariants of toric CY 3-folds to the spectra of operators attached to their mirror curves. We deduce two consequences of this conjecture for the integral regulators of $K_2$-classes on these curves, and then prove both of them; the results thus give evidence for the CGM conjecture. (While the conjecture and the deduction process both entail forms of local mirror symmetry, the consequences/theorems do not: they only involve the curves themselves.) Our first theorem relates zeroes of the higher normal function to the spectra of the operators for curves of genus one, and suggests a new link between analysis and arithmetic geometry. The second theorem provides dilogarithm formulas for limits of regulator periods at the maximal conifold point in moduli of the curves.

Hypergeometric decomposition of symmetric K3 quartic pencils

We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.

Calabi-Yau manifolds realizing symplectically rigid monodromy tuples

We define an iterative construction that produces a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau $n$-folds with section from a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties of one dimension lower. Parallel to the geometric construction, we iteratively obtain for each family with a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, normalized to be at t=0, its Picard-Fuchs operator and a closed-form expression for the period holomorphic at t=0, through a generalization of the classical Euler transform for hypergeometric functions. In particular, our construction yields one-parameter families of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with section whose Picard-Fuchs operators realize all symplectically rigid Calabi-Yau differential operators with three regular singular points classified by Bogner and Reiter, but also non-rigid operators with four singular points.

Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred by high rank lattice polarized K3 surfaces

We study threefolds fibred by K3 surfaces admitting a lattice polarization by a certain class of rank 19 lattices. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the appropriate K3 moduli space, which we call the generalized functional invariant. Then we show that if the threefold total space is a smooth Calabi-Yau, there are only finitely many possibilities for the polarizing lattice and the form of the generalized functional invariant. Finally, we construct explicit examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds realizing each case and compute their Hodge numbers.

Calabi-Yau Threefolds Fibred by Mirror Quartic K3 Surfaces

We study threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We begin by showing that any family of such K3 surfaces is completely determined by a map from the base of the family to the moduli space of mirror quartic K3 surfaces. This is then used to give a complete explicit description of all Calabi-Yau threefolds fibred by mirror quartic K3 surfaces. We conclude by studying the properties of such Calabi-Yau threefolds, including their Hodge numbers and deformation theory.

Special function identities from superelliptic Kummer varieties

We prove that the factorization of Appell's generalized hypergeometric series satisfying the so-called quadric property into a product of two Gauss' hypergeometric functions has a geometric origin: we first construct a generalized Kummer variety as minimal nonsingular model for a product-quotient surface with only rational double points from a pair of superelliptic curves of genus $2r-1$ with $r \in \mathbb{N}$. We then show that this generalized Kummer variety is equipped with two fibrations with fibers of genus $2r-1$. When periods of a holomorphic two-form over carefully crafted transcendental two-cycles on the generalized Kummer variety are evaluated using either of the two fibrations, the answer must be independent of the fibration and the aforementioned family of special function identities is obtained. This family of identities can be seen as a multivariate generalization of Clausen's Formula. Interestingly, this paper's finding bridges Ernst Kummer's two independent lines of research, algebraic transformations for the Gauss' hypergeometric function and nodal surfaces of degree four in $\mathbb{P}^3$.

The 14th case VHS via K3 fibrations

We present a study of certain singular one-parameter subfamilies of Calabi-Yau threefolds realized as anticanonical hypersurfaces or complete intersections in toric varieties. Our attention to these families is motivated by the Doran-Morgan classification of variations of Hodge structure which can underlie families of Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{2,1} = 1$ over the thrice-punctured sphere. We explore their torically induced fibrations by $M$-polarized K3 surfaces and use these fibrations to construct an explicit geometric transition between an anticanonical hypersurface and a nef complete intersection through a singular subfamily of hypersurfaces. Moreover, we show that another singular subfamily provides a geometric realization of the missing "14th case" variation of Hodge structure from the Doran-Morgan list.

Toric Degenerations and the Laurent polynomials related to Givental's Landau-Ginzburg models

For an appropriate class of Fano complete intersections in toric varieties, we prove that there is a concrete relationship between degenerations to specific toric subvarieties and expressions for Givental's Landau-Ginzburg models as Laurent polynomials. As a result, we show that Fano varieties presented as complete intersections in partial flag manifolds admit degenerations to Gorenstein toric weak Fano varieties, and their Givental Landau-Ginzburg models can be expressed as corresponding Laurent polynomials. We also use this to show that all of the Laurent polynomials obtained by Coates, Kasprzyk and Prince by the so called Przyjalkowski method correspond to toric degenerations of the corresponding Fano variety. We discuss applications to geometric transitions of Calabi-Yau varieties.

Algebraic cycles and local quantum cohomology

We review the Hodge theory of some classic examples from mirror symmetry, with an emphasis on what is intrinsic to the A-model, and on interesting open questions and problems. In particular, we illustrate the construction of a quantum Z-local system on the cohomology of the total space of the canonical bundle of P^2, and suggest how this should be related to the higher algebraic cycles studied in our 2011 CNTP article "Algebraic K-theory of toric hypersurfaces".

Automorphic forms for triangle groups

For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.

Families of lattice polarized K3 surfaces with monodromy

We extend the notion of lattice polarization for K3 surfaces to families over a (not necessarily simply connected) base, in a way that gives control over the action of monodromy on the algebraic cycles, and discuss the uses of this new theory in the study of families of K3 surfaces admitting fibrewise symplectic automorphisms. We then give an application of these ideas to the study of Calabi-Yau threefolds admitting fibrations by lattice polarized K3 surfaces.

On General Off-Shell Representations of Worldline (1D) Supersymmetry

Every finite-dimensional unitary representation of the N-extended worldline supersymmetry without central charges may be obtained by a sequence of differential transformations from a direct sum of minimal Adinkras, simple supermultiplets that are identifiable with representations of the Clifford algebra. The data specifying this procedure is a sequence of subspaces of the direct sum of Adinkras, which then opens an avenue for classification of the continuum of so constructed off-shell supermultiplets.

Hori-Vafa mirror periods, Picard-Fuchs equations, and Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz duality

This paper discusses the overlap of the Hori-Vafa formulation of mirror symmetry with some other constructions. We focus on compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces \mathcal{M}_G = {G = 0} in weighted complex projective spaces. The Hori-Vafa formalism relates a family {\mathcal{M}_G \in WCP^{m-1}_{Q_1,...,Q_m}[s] | \sum_{i=1}^m Q_i = s} of such hypersurfaces to a single Landau-Ginzburg mirror theory. A technique suggested by Hori and Vafa allows the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the corresponding mirror periods to be determined. Some examples in which the variety \mathcal{M}_G is crepantly resolved are considered. The resulting Picard-Fuchs equations agree with those found elsewhere working in the Batyrev-Borisov framework. When G is an invertible nondegenerate quasihomogeneous polynomial, the Chiodo-Ruan geometrical interpretation of Berglund-Huebsch-Krawitz duality can be used to associate a particular complex structure for \mathcal{M}_G with a particular Kaehler structure for the mirror \widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_G. We make this association for such G when the ambient space of \mathcal{M}_G is CP^2, CP^3, and CP^4. Finally, we probe some of the resulting mirror Kaehler structures by determining corresponding Picard-Fuchs equations.

Closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in toric varieties

We use Batyrev-Borisov's formula for the generating function of stringy Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as complete intersections in toric varieties in order to get closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds in five-dimensional ambient spaces. These expressions involve counts of lattice points on faces of associated Cayley polytopes. Using the same techniques, similar expressions may be obtained for higher dimensional varieties realized as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces.

Lattice Polarized K3 Surfaces and Siegel Modular Forms

The goal of the present paper is two-fold. First, we present a classification of algebraic K3 surfaces polarized by the lattice H+E_8+E_7. Key ingredients for this classification are: a normal form for these lattice polarized K3 surfaces, a coarse moduli space and an explicit description of the inverse period map in terms of Siegel modular forms. Second, we give explicit formulas for a Hodge correspondence that relates these K3 surfaces to principally polarized abelian surfaces. The Hodge correspondence in question underlies a geometric two-isogeny of K3 surfaces.

Note on a Geometric Isogeny of K3 Surfaces

The paper establishes a correspondence relating two specific classes of complex algebraic K3 surfaces. The first class consists of K3 surfaces polarized by the rank-sixteen lattice H+E_7+E_7. The second class consists of K3 surfaces obtained as minimal resolutions of double covers of the projective plane branched over a configuration of six lines. The correspondence underlies a geometric two-isogeny of K3 surfaces.

Off-shell supersymmetry and filtered Clifford supermodules

An off-shell representation of supersymmetry is a representation of the super Poincare algebra on a dynamically unconstrained space of fields. We describe such representations formally, in terms of the fields and their spacetime derivatives, and we interpret the physical concept of engineering dimension as an integral grading. We prove that formal graded off-shell representations of one-dimensional N-extended supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra p^{1|N}, correspond to filtered Clifford supermodules over Cl(N). We also prove that formal graded off-shell representations of two-dimensional (p,q)-supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra p^{1,1|p,q}, correspond to bifiltered Clifford supermodules over Cl(p+q). Our primary tools are the formal deformations of filtered superalgebras and supermodules, which give a one-to-one correspondence between filtered spaces and graded spaces with even degree-shifting injections. This generalizes the machinery developed by Gerstenhaber to prove that every filtered algebra is a deformation of its associated graded algebra. Our treatment extends Gerstenhaber's discussion to the case of filtrations which are compatible with a supersymmetric structure, as well as to filtered modules in addition to filtered algebras. We also describe the analogous constructions for bifiltrations and bigradings.

A "Periodic Table" for Supersymmetric M-Theory Compactifications

We develop a systematic method for classifying supersymmetric orbifold compactifications of M-theory. By restricting our attention to abelian orbifolds with low order, in the special cases where elements do not include coordinate shifts, we construct a "periodic table" of such compactifications, organized according to the orbifolding group (order up to 12) and dimension (up to 7). An intriguing connection between supersymmetric orbifolds and G2-structures is explored.
