Block-modified Wishart matrices: the easy case

Associated to any complex Wishart matrix $W$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$ and any linear map $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is the "block-modified" matrix $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$. Following some previous work with Nechita, we study here the asymptotic $*$-distribution of $\tilde{W}$, in the $d\to\infty$ limit, in the case where the modification map $φ$ is "easy", or more generally super-easy, in the quantum algebra/representation theory sense. Under suitable assumptions on $φ$ we obtain in this way a compound free Poisson law.

Flat matrix models for quantum permutation groups

We study the matrix models $π:C(S_N^+)\to M_N(C(X))$ which are flat, in the sense that the standard generators of $C(S_N^+)$ are mapped to rank 1 projections. Our first result is a generalization of the Pauli matrix construction at $N=4$, using finite groups and 2-cocycles. Our second result is the construction of a universal representation of $C(S_N^+)$, inspired from the Sinkhorn algorithm, that we conjecture to be inner faithful.

Liberations and twists of real and complex spheres

We study the 10 noncommutative spheres obtained by liberating, twisting, and liberating+twisting the real and complex spheres $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R,S^{N-1}_\mathbb C$. At the axiomatic level, we show that, under very strong axioms, these 10 spheres are the only ones. Our main results concern the computation of the quantum isometry groups of these 10 spheres, taken in an affine real/complex sense. We formulate as well a proposal for an extended formalism, comprising 18 spheres.

Quantum isometries of noncommutative polygonal spheres

The real sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ appears as increasing union, over $d\in\{1,...,N\}$, of its "polygonal" versions $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R=\{x\in S^{N-1}_\mathbb R|x_{i_0}... x_{i_d}=0,\forall i_0,...,i_d\ {\rm distinct}\}$. Motivated by general classification questions for the undeformed noncommutative spheres, smooth or not, we study here the quantum isometries of $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R$, and of its various noncommutative analogues, obtained via liberation and twisting. We discuss as well a complex version of these results, with $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ replaced by the complex sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb C$.

Random walk questions for linear quantum groups

We study the discrete quantum groups $Γ$ whose group algebra has an inner faithful representation of type $π:C^*(Γ)\to M_K(\mathbb C)$. Such a representation can be thought of as coming from an embedding $Γ\subset U_K$. Our main result, concerning a certain class of examples of such quantum groups, is an asymptotic convergence theorem for the random walk on $Γ$. The proof uses various algebraic and probabilistic techniques.

The algebraic structure of quantum partial isometries

The partial isometries of $\mathbb R^N,\mathbb C^N$ form compact semigroups $\widetilde{O}_N,\widetilde{U}_N$. We discuss here the liberation question for these semigroups, and for their discrete versions $\widetilde{H}_N,\widetilde{K}_N$. Our main results concern the construction of half-liberations $\widetilde{H}_N^\times,\widetilde{K}_N^\times,\widetilde{O}_N^\times,\widetilde{U}_N^\times$ and of liberations $\widetilde{H}_N^+,\widetilde{K}_N^+,\widetilde{O}_N^+,\widetilde{U}_N^+$. We include a detailed algebraic and probabilistic study of all these objects, justifying our "half-liberation" and "liberation" claims.

Uniqueness results for noncommutative spheres and projective spaces

It is known that, under strong combinatorial axioms, $O_N\subset O_N^*\subset O_N^+$ are the only orthogonal quantum groups. We prove here similar results for the noncommutative spheres $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$, the noncommutative projective spaces $P^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset P^{N-1}_\mathbb C\subset P^{N-1}_+$, and the projective orthogonal quantum groups $PO_N\subset PO_N^*\subset PO_N^+$.

The Gale-Berlekamp game for complex Hadamard matrices

Associated to a complex Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the complex probability measure $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb C)$ describing the distribution of $φ(a,b)=<a,Hb>$, where $a,b\in\mathbb T^N$ are random. This measure is called "glow" of the matrix, due to the analogy with the Gale-Berlekamp switching game, where $H,a,b$ are real. We prove here that: (1) $μ$ becomes complex Gaussian in the $N\to\infty$ limit, (2) the universality holds as well at order 2, (3) the order 3 term seems to be quite interesting, particularly for the master Hadamard matrices, (4) in the Fourier matrix case, some of the higher order terms control counting problems for circulant Hadamard matrices.

The Gale-Berlekamp game for Hadamard matrices

Given an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\pm1)$ we consider the function $φ:\mathbb Z_2^N\times\mathbb Z_2^N\to\mathbb Z$ given by $φ(a,b)=\sum_{ij}a_ib_jH_{ij}$, which sums the entries of the various conjugates of $H$, obtained by switching signs on rows and columns. Our claim is that $φ$, or just its probabilistic distribution $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb Z)$, that we call "glow" of the matrix, should encode important information about $H$. We present here a number of results and conjectures in this direction, notably with a general decomposition result for $μ$.

The glow of Fourier matrices: universality and fluctuations

The glow of an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the probability measure $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb C)$ describing the distribution of $φ(a,b)=<a,Hb>$, where $a,b\in\mathbb T^N$ are random. We prove that $φ/N$ becomes complex Gaussian with $N\to\infty$, and that the universality holds as well at order 2. In the case of a Fourier matrix, $F_G\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ with $|G|=N$, the universality holds up to order 4, and the fluctuations are encoded by certain subtle integrals, which appear in connection with several Hadamard-related questions. In the Walsh matrix case, $G=\mathbb Z_2^n$, we conjecture that the glow is polynomial in $N=2^n$.

Truncation and duality results for Hopf image algebras

Associated to an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the spectral measure $μ\in\mathcal P[0,N]$ of the corresponding Hopf image algebra, $A=C(G)$ with $G\subset S_N^+$. We study here a certain family of discrete measures $μ^r\in\mathcal P[0,N]$, coming from the idempotent state theory of $G$, which converge in Cesàro limit to $μ$. Our main result is a duality formula of type $\int_0^N(x/N)^pdμ^r(x)=\int_0^N(x/N)^rdν^p(x)$, where $μ^r,ν^r$ are the truncations of the spectral measures $μ,ν$ associated to $H,H^t$. We prove as well, using these truncations $μ^r,ν^r$, that for any deformed Fourier matrix $H=F_M\otimes_QF_N$ we have $μ=ν$.

Analytic aspects of the circulant Hadamard conjecture

We investigate the problem of counting the real or complex Hadamard matrices which are circulant, by using analytic methods. Our main observation is the fact that for $|q_0|=...=|q_{N-1}|=1$ the quantity $Φ=\sum_{i+k=j+l}\frac{q_iq_k}{q_jq_l}$ satisfies $Φ\geq N^2$, with equality if and only if $q=(q_i)$ is the eigenvalue vector of a rescaled circulant complex Hadamard matrix. This suggests three analytic problems, namely: (1) the brute-force minimization of $Φ$, (2) the study of the critical points of $Φ$, and (3) the computation of the moments of $Φ$. We explore here these questions, with some results and conjectures.

First order deformations of the Fourier matrix

The $N\times N$ complex Hadamard matrices form a real algebraic manifold $C_N$. The singularity at a point $H\in C_N$ is described by a filtration of cones $T^\times_HC_N\subset T^\circ_HC_N\subset T_HC_N\subset\widetilde{T}_HC_N$, coming from the trivial, affine, smooth and first order deformations. We study here these cones in the case where $H=F_N$ is the Fourier matrix, $(w^{ij})$ with $w=e^{2πi/N}$, our main result being a simple description of $\widetilde{T}_HC_N$. As a consequence, the rationality conjecture $dim_\mathbb R(\widetilde{T}_HC_N)=dim_\mathbb Q(\widetilde{T}_HC_N\cap M_N(\mathbb Q))$ holds at $H=F_N$.

preprint2013arXiv

The defect of generalized Fourier matrices

The $N\times N$ complex Hadamard matrices form a real algebraic manifold $C_N$. We have $C_N=M_N(\mathbb T)\cap\sqrt{N}U_N$, and following Tadej and Życzkowski we investigate here the computation of the enveloping tangent space $\widetilde{T}_HC_N=T_HM_N(\mathbb T)\cap T_H\sqrt{N}U_N$, and notably of its dimension $d(H)=\dim(\widetilde{T}_HC_N)$, called undephased defect of $H$. Our main result is an explicit formula for the defect of the Fourier matrix $F_G$ associated to an arbitrary finite abelian group $G=\mathbb Z_{N_1}\times...\times\mathbb Z_{N_r}$. We also comment on the general question "does the associated quantum permutation group see the defect", with a probabilistic speculation involving Diaconis-Shahshahani type variables.

Almost Hadamard matrices: general theory and examples

We develop a general theory of "almost Hadamard matrices". These are by definition the matrices $H\in M_N(\mathbb R)$ having the property that $U=H/\sqrt{N}$ is orthogonal, and is a local maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). Our study includes a detailed discussion of the circulant case ($H_{ij}=γ_{j-i}$) and of the two-entry case ($H_{ij}\in{x,y}$), with the construction of several families of examples, and some 1-norm computations.

preprint2012arXiv

Almost Hadamard matrices: the case of arbitrary exponents

In our previous work, we introduced the following relaxation of the Hadamard property: a square matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb R)$ is called "almost Hadamard" if $U=H/\sqrt{N}$ is orthogonal, and locally maximizes the 1-norm on O(N). We review our previous results, notably with the formulation of a new question, regarding the circulant and symmetric case. We discuss then an extension of the almost Hadamard matrix formalism, by making use of the p-norm on O(N), with $p\in[1,\infty]-{2}$, with a number of theoretical results on the subject, and the formulation of some open problems.

Asymptotic eigenvalue distributions of block-transposed Wishart matrices

We study the partial transposition ${W}^Γ=(\mathrm{id}\otimes \mathrm{t})W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of a Wishart matrix $W\in M_{dn}(\mathbb C)$ of parameters $(dn,dm)$. Our main result is that, with $d\to\infty$, the law of $m{W}^Γ$ is a free difference of free Poisson laws of parameters $m(n\pm 1)/2$. Motivated by questions in quantum information theory, we also derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these measures to be supported on the positive half line.

preprint2012arXiv

Block-modified Wishart matrices and free Poisson laws

We study the random matrices of type $\tilde{W}=(id\otimesφ)W$, where $W$ is a complex Wishart matrix of parameters $(dn,dm)$, and $φ:M_n(\mathbb C)\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is a self-adjoint linear map. We prove that, under suitable assumptions, we have the $d\to\infty$ eigenvalue distribution formula $δm\tilde{W}\simπ_{mnρ}\boxtimesν$, where $ρ$ is the law of $φ$, viewed as a square matrix, $π$ is the free Poisson law, $ν$ is the law of $D=φ(1)$, and $δ=tr(D)$.

De Finetti theorems for easy quantum groups

We study sequences of noncommutative random variables which are invariant under "quantum transformations" coming from an orthogonal quantum group satisfying the "easiness" condition axiomatized in our previous paper. For 10 easy quantum groups, we obtain de Finetti type theorems characterizing the joint distribution of any infinite quantum invariant sequence. In particular, we give a new and unified proof of the classical results of de Finetti and Freedman for the easy groups S_n, O_n, which is based on the combinatorial theory of cumulants. We also recover the free de Finetti theorem of Köstler and Speicher, and the characterization of operator-valued free semicircular families due to Curran. We consider also finite sequences, and prove an approximation result in the spirit of Diaconis and Freedman.

Noncommutative homogeneous spaces: the matrix case

Given a quantum subgroup $G\subset U_n$ and a number $k\leq n$ we can form the homogeneous space $X=G/(G\cap U_k)$, and it follows from the Stone-Weierstrass theorem that $C(X)$ is the algebra generated by the last $n-k$ rows of coordinates on $G$. In the quantum group case the analogue of this basic result doesn't necessarily hold, and we discuss here its validity, notably with a complete answer in the group dual case. We focus then on the "easy quantum group" case, with the construction and study of several algebras associated to the noncommutative spaces of type $X=G/(G\cap U_k^+)$.

preprint2012arXiv

Quantum isometries and group dual subgroups

We study the discrete groups $Λ$ whose duals embed into a given compact quantum group, $\hatΛ\subset G$. In the matrix case $G\subset U_n^+$ the embedding condition is equivalent to having a quotient map $Γ_U\toΛ$, where $F=\{Γ_U|U\in U_n\}$ is a certain family of groups associated to $G$. We develop here a number of techniques for computing $F$, partly inspired from Bichon's classification of group dual subgroups $\hatΛ\subset S_n^+$. These results are motivated by Goswami's notion of quantum isometry group, because a compact connected Riemannian manifold cannot have non-abelian group dual isometries.

preprint2012arXiv

Quantum symmetry groups of C*-algebras equipped with orthogonal filtrations

Motivated by the work of Goswami on quantum isometry groups of noncommutative manifolds we define the quantum symmetry group of a unital C*-algebra A equipped with an orthogonal filtration as the universal object in the category of compact quantum groups acting on A in a filtration preserving fashion. The existence of such a universal object is proved and several examples discussed. In particular we study the universal quantum group acting on the dual of the free group and preserving both the word length and the block length.

Combinatorial aspects of orthogonal group integrals

We study the integrals of type $I(a)=\int_{O_n}\prod u_{ij}^{a_{ij}}\,du$, depending on a matrix $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, whose exact computation is an open problem. Our results are as follows: (1) an extension of the "elementary expansion" formula from the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(2\mathbb N)$ to the general case $a\in M_{p\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (2) the construction of the "best algebraic normalization" of $I(a)$, in the case $a\in M_{2\times q}(\mathbb N)$, (3) an explicit formula for $I(a)$, for diagonal matrices $a\in M_{3\times 3}(\mathbb N)$, (4) a modelling result in the case $a\in M_{1\times 2}(\mathbb N)$, in relation with the Euler-Rodrigues formula. Most proofs use various combinatorial techniques.

Finite quantum groups and quantum permutation groups

We give examples of finite quantum permutation groups which arise from the twisting construction or as bicrossed products associated to exact factorizations in finite groups. We also give examples of finite quantum groups which are not quantum permutation groups: one such example occurs as a split abelian extension associated to the exact factorization $\mathbb S_4 = \mathbb Z_4 \mathbb S_3$ and has dimension 24. We show that, in fact, this is the smallest possible dimension that a non quantum permutation group can have.

preprint2011arXiv

Quantum isometry groups of duals of free powers of cyclic groups

We study the quantum isometry groups of the noncommutative Riemannian manifolds associated to discrete group duals. The basic representation theory problem is to compute the law of the main character of the relevant quantum group, and our main result here is as follows: for the group Z_s^{*n}, with s>4 and n>1, half of the character follows the compound free Poisson law with respect to the measure $\underlineε$/2, where $ε$ is the uniform measure on the s-th roots of unity, and $ε\to\underlineε$ is the canonical projection map from complex to real measures. We discuss as well a number of technical versions of this result, notably with the construction of a new quantum group, which appears as a "representation-theoretic limit", at s equal to infinity.

preprint2010arXiv

Decomposition results for Gram matrix determinants

We study the Gram matrix determinants for the groups $S_n,O_n,B_n,H_n$, for their free versions $S_n^+,O_n^+,B_n^+,H_n^+$, and for the half-liberated versions $O_n^*,H_n^*$. We first collect all the known computations of such determinants, along with complete and simplified proofs, and with generalizations where needed. We conjecture that all these determinants decompose as $D=\prod_πϕ(π)$, with product over all associated partitions.

preprint2010arXiv

Quantum automorphisms of twisted group algebras and free hypergeometric laws

We prove that we have an isomorphism of type $A_{aut}(\mathbb C_σ[G])\simeq A_{aut}(\mathbb C[G])^σ$, for any finite group $G$, and any 2-cocycle $σ$ on $G$. In the particular case $G=\mathbb Z_n^2$, this leads to a Haar-measure preserving identification between the subalgebra of $A_o(n)$ generated by the variables $u_{ij}^2$, and the subalgebra of $A_s(n^2)$ generated by the variables $X_{ij}=\sum_{a,b=1}^np_{ia,jb}$. Since $u_{ij}$ is "free hyperspherical" and $X_{ij}$ is "free hypergeometric", we obtain in this way a new free probability formula, which at $n=\infty$ corresponds to the well-known relation between the semicircle law, and the free Poisson law.

preprint2010arXiv

Two-parameter families of quantum symmetry groups

We introduce and study natural two-parameter families of quantum groups motivated on one hand by the liberations of classical orthogonal groups and on the other by quantum isometry groups of the duals of the free groups. Specifically, for each pair (p,q) of non-negative integers we define and investigate quantum groups O^+(p,q), B^+(p,q), S^+(p,q) and H^+(p,q) corresponding to, respectively, orthogonal groups, bistochastic groups, symmetric groups and hyperoctahedral groups. In the first three cases the new quantum groups turn out to be related to the (dual free products of) free quantum groups studied earlier. For H^+(p,q) the situation is different: we show that H^+(p,0) is isomorphic to the quantum isometry group of the C*-algebra of the free group and it can be viewed as a liberation of the classical isometry group of the p-dimensional torus.

preprint2009arXiv

Hopf images and inner faithful representations

We develop a general theory of Hopf image of a Hopf algebra representation, with the associated concept of inner faithful representation, modelled on the notion of faithful representation of a discrete group. We study several examples, including group algebras, enveloping algebras of Lie algebras, pointed Hopf algebras, function algebras, twistings and cotwistings, and we present a Tannaka duality formulation of the notion of Hopf image.

preprint2009arXiv

Invariants of the half-liberated orthogonal group

The half-liberated orthogonal group $O_n^*$ appears as intermediate quantum group between the orthogonal group $O_n$, and its free version $O_n^+$. We discuss here its basic algebraic properties, and we classify its irreducible representations. The classification of representations is done by using a certain twisting-type relation between $O_n^*$ and $U_n$, a non abelian discrete group playing the role of weight lattice for $O_n^*$, and a number of methods inspired from the theory of Lie algebras. We use these results for showing that the discrete quantum group dual to $O_n^*$ has polynomial growth.

The orthogonal Weingarten formula in compact form

We present a compact formulation of the orthogonal Weingarten formula, with the traditional quantity $I(i_1,...,i_{2k}:j_1,...,j_{2k}) = \int_{O_n}u_{i_1j_1} ... u_{i_{2k}j_{2k}} du$ replaced by the more advanced quantity $I(a)=\int_{O_n}Πu_{ij}^{a_{ij}} du$, depending on a matrix of exponents $a\in M_n(\mathbb N)$. Among consequences, we establish a number of basic facts regarding the integrals $I(a)$: vanishing conditions, possible poles, asymptotic behavior.

preprint2004arXiv

The planar algebra of a coaction

We study actions of ``compact quantum groups'' on ``finite quantum spaces''. According to Woronowicz and to general $\c^*$-algebra philosophy these correspond to certain coactions $v:A\to A\otimes H$. Here $A$ is a finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebra, and $H$ is a certain special type of Hopf *-algebra. If $v$ preserves a positive linear form $ϕ:A\to\c$, a version of Jones' ``basic construction'' applies. This produces a certain $\c^*$-algebra structure on $A^{\otimes n}$, plus a coaction $v_n :A^{\otimes n}\to A^{\otimes n}\otimes H$, for every $n$. The elements $x$ satisfying $v_n(x)=x\otimes 1$ are called fixed points of $v_n$. They form a $\c^*$-algebra $Q_n(v)$. We prove that under suitable assumptions on $v$ the graded union of the algebras $Q_n(v)$ is a spherical $\c^*$-planar algebra.
