Second-order magnetic responses in quantum magnets: Magnetization under ac magnetic fields

We investigate second-order magnetic responses of quantum magnets against ac magnetic fields. We focus on the case where the $z$ component of the spin is conserved in the unperturbed Hamiltonian and the driving field is applied in the $xy$ plane. We find that linearly polarized driving fields induce a second-harmonic response, while circularly polarized fields generate only a zero-frequency response, leading to a magnetization with a direction determined by the helicity. Employing an unbiased numerical method, we demonstrate the nonlinear magnetic effect driven by the circularly polarized field in the XXZ model and show that the magnitude of the magnetization can be predicted by the dynamical spin structure factor in the linear response regime.

Exploring nonequilibrium phases of photo-doped Mott insulators with Generalized Gibbs ensembles

Photo-excited strongly correlated systems can exhibit intriguing non-thermal phases, but the theoretical investigation of them poses significant challenges. In this work, we introduce a generalized Gibbs ensemble type description for long-lived photo-doped states in Mott insulators. This framework enables systematic studies of photo-induced phases based on equilibrium methods, as demonstrated here for the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. We determine the nonequilibrium phase diagram, which features $η$-pairing and charge density wave phases in a wide doping range, and reveal physical properties of these phases. We show that the peculiar kinematics of photo-doped carriers, and the interaction between them, play an essential role in the formation of the non-thermal phases, and we clarify the differences between photo-doped Mott insulators, chemically-doped Mott insulators and photo-doped semiconductors. Our results demonstrate a new path for the systematic exploration of nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems and show that photo-doped Mott insulators host different phases than conventional semiconductors.

Charge stiffness and long-range correlation in the optically induced $η$-pairing state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We show that optical excitation of the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model can create a state possessing two of the hallmarks of superconductivity: a nonvanishing charge stiffness and long-ranged pairing correlation. By employing the exact diagonalization method, we find that the superposition of the $η$-pairing eigenstates induced by the optical pump exhibits a nonvanishing charge stiffness and a pairing correlation that decays very slowly with system size in sharp contrast to the behavior of an ensemble of thermally excited eigenstates, which has a vanishing charge stiffness and no long-ranged pairing correlations. We show that the charge stiffness is indeed directly associated with the $η$-pairing correlation in the Hubbard model. Our finding demonstrates that optical pumping can actually lead to superconducting-like properties on the basis of the $η$-pairing states.

Collective Modes in Excitonic Insulators: Effects of Electron-Phonon Coupling and Signatures in Optical Response

We consider a two-band spinless model describing an excitonic insulator (EI) on the two-dimensional square lattice with anisotropic hopping parameters and electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling, inspired by the EI candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We systematically study the nature of the collective excitations in the ordered phase which originates from the interband Coulomb interaction and the el-ph coupling. When the ordered phase is stabilized only by the Coulomb interaction (pure EI phase), its collective response exhibits a massless phase mode in addition to the amplitude mode. We show that in the BEC regime, the signal of the amplitude mode becomes less prominent and that the anisotropy in the phase mode velocities is relaxed compared to the model bandstructure. Through coupling to the lattice, the phase mode acquires a mass and the signal of the amplitude mode becomes less prominent. Importantly, character of the softening mode at the boundary between the normal semiconductor phase and the ordered phase depends on the parameter condition. In particular, we point out that even for el-ph coupling smaller than the Coulomb interaction the mode that softens to zero at the boundary can have a phonon character. We also discuss how the collective modes can be observed in the optical conductivity. Furthermore, we study the effects of nonlocal interactions on the collective modes and show the possibility of realizing a coexistence of an in-gap mode and an above-gap mode split off from the single amplitude mode in the system with the local interaction only.

Photoinduced $η$-pairing at finite temperatures

We numerically prove photoinduced $η$-pairing in a half-filled fermionic Hubbard chain at both zero and finite temperature. The result, obtained by combining the matrix-product-state based infinite time-evolving block decimation technique and the purification method, applies to the thermodynamic limit. Exciting the Mott insulator by a laser electric field docked on via the Peierls phase, we track the time-evolution of the correlated many-body system and determine the optimal parameter set for which the nonlocal part of the $η$-pair correlation function becomes dominant during the laser pump at zero and low temperatures. These correlations vanish at higher temperatures and long times after pulse irradiation. In the high laser frequency strong Coulomb coupling regime we observe a remnant enhancement of the Brillouin-zone boundary pair-correlation function also at high temperatures, if the Hubbard interaction is about a multiple of the laser frequency, which can be attributed to an enhanced double occupancy in the virtual Floquet state.

Photoinduced $η$-pairing in One-dimensional Mott Insulators

Employing the density-matrix renormalization group technique in the matrix-product-state representation, we investigate the photoexcited superconducting correlations induced by the $η$-pairing mechanism in the half-filled Hubbard chain. We estimate the characteristic pair correlation function and verify the accuracy of our numerical results by comparison with exact-diagonalization data for small systems. The optimal parameter set of the pump that most enhances the $η$-pair correlations, is calculated in the strong-coupling regime. For such a pump, we explore the possibility of quasi-long-range order.

Superconductivity and charge density wave under a time-dependent periodic field in the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

We investigate the competition between superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) under a time-dependent periodic field in the attractive Hubbard model. By employing the time-dependent exact diagonalization method, we show that the driving frequency and amplitude of the external field can control the enhancement of either the superconducting pair or the CDW correlations, which are degenerate in the ground state of the half-filled attractive Hubbard model in the absence of the field. In the strong-coupling limit of the attractive Hubbard interaction, the controllability is characterized by the anisotropic interaction of the effective model. The anisotropy is induced by the external field and lifts the degeneracy of SC and CDW. We find that the enhancement or suppression of the superconducting pair and CDW correlations in the periodically-driven attractive Hubbard model can be well interpreted by the quench dynamics of the effective model derived in the strong-coupling limit.

Electric and magnetic multipoles and bond orders in excitonic insulators

We study the charge and spin density distributions of excitonic insulator (EI) states in the tight-binding approximation. We first discuss the charge and spin densities of the EI states when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orthogonal orbitals in a single atom. We show that the anisotropic charge or spin density distribution occurs in a unit cell (or atom) and a higher rank electric or magnetic multipole moment becomes finite, indicating that the EI state corresponds to the multipole order. A full description of the multipole moments for the $s$, $p$, and $d$ orbitals is then given in general. We find that, in contrast to the conventional density-wave states, the modulation of the total charge or net magnetization does not appear in this case. However, when the conduction and valence bands include the component of the same orbital, the modulation of the total charge or net magnetization appears, as in the conventional density-wave state. We also discuss the electron density distribution in the EI state when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orbitals located in different atoms. We show that the excitonic ordering in this case corresponds to the bond order formation. Based on the results thus obtained we discuss the EI states of real materials recently reported.

Microscopic quantum interference in excitonic condensation of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

The microscopic quantum interference associated with excitonic condensation in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is studied in the BCS-type mean-field approximation. We show that in ultrasonic attenuation the coherence peak appears just below the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ whereas in NMR spin-lattice relaxation the rate rapidly decreases below $T_{\rm c}$; these observations can offer a crucial experimental test for the validity of the excitonic condensation scenario in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We also show that the excitonic condensation manifests itself in a jump of the heat capacity at $T_{\rm c}$ as well as in softening of the elastic shear constant, in accordance with the second-order phase transition observed in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Mott Transitions and Staggered Orders in the Three-component Fermionic System: Variational Cluster Approach

The variational cluster approximation is used to study the ground-state properties and single-particle spectra of the three-component fermionic Hubbard model defined on the two-dimensional square lattice at half filling. First, we show that either a paired Mott state or color-selective Mott state is realized in the paramagnetic system, depending on the anisotropy in the interaction strengths, except around the SU(3) symmetric point, where a paramagnetic metallic state is maintained. Then, by introducing Weiss fields to observe spontaneous symmetry breakings, we show that either a color-density-wave state or color-selective antiferromagnetic state is realized depending on the interaction anisotropy and that the first-order phase transition between these two states occurs at the SU(3) point. We moreover show that these staggered orders originate from the gain in potential energy (or Slater mechanism) near the SU(3) point but originate from the gain in kinetic energy (or Mott mechanism) when the interaction anisotropy is strong. The staggered orders near the SU(3) point disappear when the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameters are introduced, indicating that these orders are fragile, protected only by the Fermi surface nesting.

Competition between excitonic charge and spin density waves: Influence of electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings

We analyze the stability of excitonic ground states in the two-band Hubbard model with additional electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings using a combination of mean-field and variational cluster approaches. We show that both the interband Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon interaction will cooperatively stabilize a charge density wave (CDW) state which typifies an "excitonic" CDW if predominantly triggered by the effective interorbital electron-hole attraction or a "phononic" CDW if mostly caused by the coupling to the lattice degrees of freedom. By contrast, the Hund's rule coupling promotes an excitonic spin density wave. We determine the transition between excitonic charge and spin density waves and comment on a fixation of the phase of the excitonic order parameter that would prevent the formation of a superfluid condensate of excitons. The implications for exciton condensation in several material classes with strongly correlated electrons are discussed.

Metal-Insulator Transition of Dirac Fermions: Variational Cluster Study

A comparative study is made on the metal-insulator transition of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb and π-flux Hubbard models at half filling by means of the variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical impurity approximation. Paying particular attention to the choice of the geometry of solver clusters and the inclusion of particle-bath sites, we show that the direct transition from the Dirac semimetallic state to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state occurs in these models, and therefore, the spin liquid phase is absent in the intermediate region, in agreement with recent quantum-Monte-Carlo--based calculations.

Aligning Software-related Strategies in Multi-Organizational Settings

Aligning the activities of an organization with its business goals is a challenging task that is critical for success. Alignment in a multi-organizational setting requires the integration of different internal or external organizational units. The anticipated benefits of multi-organizational alignment consist of clarified contributions and increased transparency of the involved organizational units. The GQM+Strategies approach provides mechanisms for explicitly linking goals and strategies within an organization and is based on goal-oriented measurement. This paper presents the process and first-hand experience of applying GQM+Strategies in a multi-organizational setting from the aerospace industry. Additionally, the resulting GQM+Strategies grid is sketched and selected parts are discussed. Finally, the results are reflected on and an overview of future work is given.

BCS-BEC Crossover in the Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model: Variational Cluster Approach

We use the variational cluster approximation to study the superconducting ground state in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, putting particular emphasis on the significance of quantum fluctuations of the system. We first show that the order parameter is suppressed in comparison with that obtained using the mean-field theory owing to the effects of spatial fluctuations in two-dimensional systems. We then show that the calculated Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectra and condensation amplitude clearly exhibit the character of Cooper pairs in momentum space and that the pair coherence length $ξ$ evaluated from the condensation amplitude demonstrates a smooth crossover in real space from a weakly paired BCS state ($ξ\gg a$) to a BEC state of tightly bound pairs ($ξ\ll a$), where $a$ is the lattice constant. The calculated kinetic and potential energies in the superconducting and normal ground states indicate that the superconducting state in the weak-coupling region is driven by the gain in potential energy, while that in the strongcoupling region is driven by the gain in kinetic energy.
