Collective mode excitations and simulated $L$-edge resonant-inelastic x-ray scattering spectra in antiferromagnetic Ca$_2$RuO$_4$

Using the three-orbital Hubbard model, we investigate the low-energy excitation spectra in the antiferromagnetic phase of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$. We calculate the dynamical susceptibilities in the low-energy region by the random phase approximation and find that the anisotropic dispersion of the transverse mode is in good agreement with the spectra recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. By the fast-collision approximation, we simulate the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of the Ru $L_3$ edge from the dynamical susceptibilities. We show that the dispersion of the transverse mode is clearly observed in the calculated RIXS spectra and that the polarization dependence of the incident x rays enables one to distinguish between the excitations of the in-plane transverse mode and out-of-plane transverse mode.

Study of Staggered Magnetization in the Spin-$S$ Square-Lattice Heisenberg Model Using Spiral Boundary Conditions

We propose an efficient numerical method to obtain local order parameter in two-dimensional systems using spiral boundary conditions. As a benchmark, we first estimate the magnitude of staggered magnetization for the $S=1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg model on a square lattice in the whole range of the XXZ anisotropy by density-matrix renormalization group technique. The validity of our method is confirmed by comparing our results with the previous analytical and numerical studies. Then, as further demonstration, we apply our method to obtain the staggered magnetization for the higher-spin cases from $S=1$ to $S=6$. The accuracy of the obtained results is validated using the series expansion and the spin-wave theory.

Charge-ordered state satisfying the Anderson condition in LiRh2O4 arising from local dimer order

We report on the charge-ordered structure of LiRh2O4 arising below the metal-insulator transition at 170 K. Structural studies using synchrotron X-rays have revealed that the charge-ordered states of Rh3+ and Rh4+ with dimerization are realized in the low-temperature phase below 170 K. Although the low-temperature ground state resembles that of CuIr2S4, a charge ordering pattern satisfying the Anderson condition is realized in LiRh2O4. Based on structural information such as the short-range order of dimers appearing above the transition temperature and the weakening of the correlation between rhodium one-dimensional chains appearing in the crystal structure, we argue that the Coulomb interaction plays an important role in determining the charge ordering patterns.

Slow dynamics of disordered zigzag chain molecules in layered LiVS2 under electron irradiation

Electronic instabilities in transition metal compounds often spontaneously form orbital molecules, which consist of orbital-coupled metal ions at low temperature. Recent local structural studies utilizing the pair distribution function revealed that preformed orbital molecules appear disordered even in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. However, it is unclear whether preformed orbital molecules are dynamic or static. Here, we provide clear experimental evidence of the slow dynamics of disordered orbital molecules realized in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase of LiVS2, which exhibits vanadium trimerization upon cooling below 314 K. Unexpectedly, the preformed orbital molecules appear as a disordered zigzag chain that fluctuate in both time and space under electron irradiation. Our findings should advance studies on soft matter physics realized in an inorganic material due to disordered orbital molecules.

Emergence of pure spin current in doped excitonic magnets

An excitonic magnet hosts a condensate of spin-triplet excitons composed of conduction-band electrons and valence-band holes, and may be described by the two-orbital Hubbard model. When the Hamiltonian has the nearest-neighbor interorbital hopping integrals with $d$-wave symmetry and the number of electrons is slightly away from half filling, the $\boldsymbol{k}$-space spin texture appears in the excitonic phase with a broken time-reversal symmetry. We then show that, applying electric field to this doped excitonic magnet along a particular direction, a pure spin current emerges along its orthogonal direction. We discuss possible experimental realization of this type of the pure spin current in actual materials.

Finite-temperature properties of excitonic condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model: Cluster mean-field-theory approach

We study the electron-hole pair (or excitonic) condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at finite temperatures based on the cluster mean-field-theory approach, where we make the grand canonical exact-diagonalization analysis of small clusters using the sine-square deformation function. We thus calculate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the model, as well as its optical conductivity and single-particle spectra, thereby clarifying how the preformed pair states appear in the strong-coupling regime of excitonic insulators. We compare our results with experiment on Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Pressure-Induced Restoration of the Reversed Crystal-Field Splitting in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$

Motivated by an experimental finding that the successive phase transitions in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ observed at ambient pressure ceases to exist under high pressures, we carry out the density-functional-theory-based electronic structure calculations and demonstrate that the reversal of the crystal-field splitting reported previously is restored under high pressures, so that the orbital degrees of freedom disappears, resulting in the single phase transition that divides the system into high-temperature Mott insulating and low-temperature antiferromagnetic insulating phases.

Superconductivity and charge density wave under a time-dependent periodic field in the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

We investigate the competition between superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) under a time-dependent periodic field in the attractive Hubbard model. By employing the time-dependent exact diagonalization method, we show that the driving frequency and amplitude of the external field can control the enhancement of either the superconducting pair or the CDW correlations, which are degenerate in the ground state of the half-filled attractive Hubbard model in the absence of the field. In the strong-coupling limit of the attractive Hubbard interaction, the controllability is characterized by the anisotropic interaction of the effective model. The anisotropy is induced by the external field and lifts the degeneracy of SC and CDW. We find that the enhancement or suppression of the superconducting pair and CDW correlations in the periodically-driven attractive Hubbard model can be well interpreted by the quench dynamics of the effective model derived in the strong-coupling limit.

Variety of order-by-disorder phases in the asymmetric $J_1-J_2$ zigzag ladder: From the delta chain to the $J_1-J_2$ chain

We study an asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ zigzag ladder consisting of two different spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic (AFM; $J_2$, $γJ_2>0$) Heisenberg legs coupled by zigzag-shaped ferromagnetic (FM; $J_1<0$) inter-leg interaction. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group based calculations the ground-state phase diagram is obtained as functions of $γ$ and $J_2/|J_1|$. It contains four kinds of frustration-induced ordered phases except a trivial FM phase. Two of the ordered phases are valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization, which is a rather conventional order by disorder. Still, it is interesting to note that the VBS states possess an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological hidden order. The remaining two phases are ferrimagnetic orders, each of which is distinguished by commensurate or incommensurate spin-spin correlation. It is striking that the ferrimagnetic orders are not associated with geometrical symmetry breaking; instead, the global spin-rotation symmetry is broken. In other words, the system lowers its energy via the FM inter-leg interaction by polarizing both of the AFM Heisenberg legs. This is a rare type of order by disorder. Besides, the incommensurate ferrimagnetic state appears as a consequence of the competition between a polarization and a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior in the AFM Heisenberg legs.

Typicality-Based Variational Cluster Approach to Thermodynamic Properties of the Hubbard Model

We develop the variational-cluster-approximation method based on the thermal-pure-quantum-state approach and apply the method to the calculations of the thermodynamic properties of the Hubbard model, thereby obtaining the temperature dependence of the single-particle excitation spectra, entropy and specific heat, and order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase efficiently. We thus demonstrate that the method developed here has a potential power for elucidating finite-temperature properties of strongly correlated electron systems.

Entanglement properties of the Haldane phases: A finite system-size approach

We study the bond-alternating Heisenberg model using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique and analytical arguments based on the matrix product state, where we pay particular attention to the boundary-condition dependence on the entanglement spectrum of the system. We show that, in the antiperiodic boundary condition (APBC), the parity quantum numbers are equivalent to the topological invariants characterizing the topological phases protected by the bond-centered inversion and $π$ rotation about $z$ axis. We also show that the odd parity in the APBC, which characterizes topologically nontrivial phases, can be extracted as a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum even with finite system size. We then determine the phase diagram of the model with the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy using the level spectroscopy method in the DMRG technique. These results not only suggest the detectability of the symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases via general twisted boundary conditions but also provide a useful and precise numerical tool for discussing the SPT phases in the exact diagonalization and DMRG techniques.

Electric and magnetic multipoles and bond orders in excitonic insulators

We study the charge and spin density distributions of excitonic insulator (EI) states in the tight-binding approximation. We first discuss the charge and spin densities of the EI states when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orthogonal orbitals in a single atom. We show that the anisotropic charge or spin density distribution occurs in a unit cell (or atom) and a higher rank electric or magnetic multipole moment becomes finite, indicating that the EI state corresponds to the multipole order. A full description of the multipole moments for the $s$, $p$, and $d$ orbitals is then given in general. We find that, in contrast to the conventional density-wave states, the modulation of the total charge or net magnetization does not appear in this case. However, when the conduction and valence bands include the component of the same orbital, the modulation of the total charge or net magnetization appears, as in the conventional density-wave state. We also discuss the electron density distribution in the EI state when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orbitals located in different atoms. We show that the excitonic ordering in this case corresponds to the bond order formation. Based on the results thus obtained we discuss the EI states of real materials recently reported.

Microscopic quantum interference in excitonic condensation of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

The microscopic quantum interference associated with excitonic condensation in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is studied in the BCS-type mean-field approximation. We show that in ultrasonic attenuation the coherence peak appears just below the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ whereas in NMR spin-lattice relaxation the rate rapidly decreases below $T_{\rm c}$; these observations can offer a crucial experimental test for the validity of the excitonic condensation scenario in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We also show that the excitonic condensation manifests itself in a jump of the heat capacity at $T_{\rm c}$ as well as in softening of the elastic shear constant, in accordance with the second-order phase transition observed in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Mott Transitions and Staggered Orders in the Three-component Fermionic System: Variational Cluster Approach

The variational cluster approximation is used to study the ground-state properties and single-particle spectra of the three-component fermionic Hubbard model defined on the two-dimensional square lattice at half filling. First, we show that either a paired Mott state or color-selective Mott state is realized in the paramagnetic system, depending on the anisotropy in the interaction strengths, except around the SU(3) symmetric point, where a paramagnetic metallic state is maintained. Then, by introducing Weiss fields to observe spontaneous symmetry breakings, we show that either a color-density-wave state or color-selective antiferromagnetic state is realized depending on the interaction anisotropy and that the first-order phase transition between these two states occurs at the SU(3) point. We moreover show that these staggered orders originate from the gain in potential energy (or Slater mechanism) near the SU(3) point but originate from the gain in kinetic energy (or Mott mechanism) when the interaction anisotropy is strong. The staggered orders near the SU(3) point disappear when the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameters are introduced, indicating that these orders are fragile, protected only by the Fermi surface nesting.

Orbital diamagnetic susceptibility in excitonic condensation phase

We study the orbital diamagnetic susceptibility in excitonic condensation phase using the meanfield approximation for a two-band model defined on a square lattice. We find that, in semiconductors, the excitonic condensation acquires a finite diamagnetic susceptibility due to spontaneous hybridization between the valence and the conduction bands, whereas in semimetals, the diamagnetic susceptibility in the normal phase is suppressed by the excitonic condensation. We also study the orbital diamagnetic and Pauli paramagnetic susceptibilities of Ta2NiSe5 using a two-dimensional three-band model and find that the calculated temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility is in qualitative agreement with experiment.

Competition between excitonic charge and spin density waves: Influence of electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings

We analyze the stability of excitonic ground states in the two-band Hubbard model with additional electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings using a combination of mean-field and variational cluster approaches. We show that both the interband Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon interaction will cooperatively stabilize a charge density wave (CDW) state which typifies an "excitonic" CDW if predominantly triggered by the effective interorbital electron-hole attraction or a "phononic" CDW if mostly caused by the coupling to the lattice degrees of freedom. By contrast, the Hund's rule coupling promotes an excitonic spin density wave. We determine the transition between excitonic charge and spin density waves and comment on a fixation of the phase of the excitonic order parameter that would prevent the formation of a superfluid condensate of excitons. The implications for exciton condensation in several material classes with strongly correlated electrons are discussed.

Metal-Insulator Transition of Dirac Fermions: Variational Cluster Study

A comparative study is made on the metal-insulator transition of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb and π-flux Hubbard models at half filling by means of the variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical impurity approximation. Paying particular attention to the choice of the geometry of solver clusters and the inclusion of particle-bath sites, we show that the direct transition from the Dirac semimetallic state to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state occurs in these models, and therefore, the spin liquid phase is absent in the intermediate region, in agreement with recent quantum-Monte-Carlo--based calculations.

BCS-BEC Crossover in the Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model: Variational Cluster Approach

We use the variational cluster approximation to study the superconducting ground state in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, putting particular emphasis on the significance of quantum fluctuations of the system. We first show that the order parameter is suppressed in comparison with that obtained using the mean-field theory owing to the effects of spatial fluctuations in two-dimensional systems. We then show that the calculated Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectra and condensation amplitude clearly exhibit the character of Cooper pairs in momentum space and that the pair coherence length $ξ$ evaluated from the condensation amplitude demonstrates a smooth crossover in real space from a weakly paired BCS state ($ξ\gg a$) to a BEC state of tightly bound pairs ($ξ\ll a$), where $a$ is the lattice constant. The calculated kinetic and potential energies in the superconducting and normal ground states indicate that the superconducting state in the weak-coupling region is driven by the gain in potential energy, while that in the strongcoupling region is driven by the gain in kinetic energy.

Switching of Conducting Planes by Partial Dimer Formation in IrTe$_2$

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was employed to study the structural-electronic phase transition of IrTe$_2$ at approximately 270 K. The low-temperature structure was found to be a triclinic (space group $P\bar{1}$) characterized by the partial formation of Ir$_2$ dimers in the triangular lattice of IrTe$_2$, resulting in a structural modulation with a wave vector of ${\bf q} = (1/5, 0, -1/5)$. First-principles band calculations demonstrate that tilted two-dimensional Fermi surfaces emerge in the triclinic phase, suggesting that switching of the conducting planes occurs from the basal plane of the trigonal IrTe$_2$ to the tilted plane normal to ${\bf q}$ of the triclinic IrTe$_2$.

Potential antiferromagnetic fluctuations in hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} studied by ^{75}As nuclear magnetic

We have performed ^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) on single crystalline Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} for x = 0.27-1. ^{75}As nuclear quadruple resonance frequency (ν_{Q}) increases linearly with increasing x. The Knight shift K in normal state shows Pauli paramagnetic behavior with slight temperature T dependence. The value of K increases gradually with increasing x. By contrast, nuclear spin- lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1} in normal state has a large T-dependence, which indicates existence of large antiferomagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations for all x. The T-dependence of 1/T_{1} shows a gap-like behavior below approximately 100 K for 0.6 < x < 0.9. These behaviors are well explained by the change of band structure with expansion of hole Fermi surfaces and shrink and disappearance of electron Fermi surfaces at Brillouin zone (BZ) with increasing x. The anisotropy of 1/T_{1}, represented by a ratio of 1/T_{1ab} to 1/T_{1c}, is always larger than 1 for all x, which indicates that the stripe-type AF fluctuations is dominant in this system. The K in superconducting (SC) state decreases, which corresponds to appearance of spin-singlet superconductivity. The T dependence of 1/T_{1} in SC state indicates multiple-SC-gap feature. A simple two gap model analysis shows that the larger superconducting gap gradually decreases with increasing x from 0.27 to 1 and smaller gap decreases rapidly and nearly vanishes for x > 0.6 where the electron pockets in BZ disappear.
