Nonlinear terahertz-wave radiation generated by mid-infrared dual-chirped optical parametric amplification femtosecond pulse laser excitation

We demonstrate an efficient procedure for terahertz-wave radiation generation by applying a nonlinear wavelength conversion approach using a mid-infrared pump source. We used a 3.3 μm dual-chirped optical parametric amplification source and a 1.5 μm fiber laser for a comparison of energy conversion efficiencies. Nonlinear inorganic and organic crystals were used, and for the periodically-poled lithium niobate crystal, the efficiencies were 1.3*10^-4 and 5.6*10^-12 for the 3.3 μm source and the 1.5 μm source, respectively. We confirmed that nonlinear crystals could be pumped with tera-watt / cm^2 class by using an mid-infrared source, which reduces several undesirable nonlinear optical effects.

Thermal control of Kerr microresonator soliton comb via an optical sideband

We report the thermal control of a dissipative Kerr microresonator soliton comb via an optical sideband generated from an electro-optic modulator. Same as the previous reports using an independent auxiliary laser, our sideband-based (S-B) auxiliary light also enables to access a stable soliton comb and to reduce the phase noise of the soliton comb, greatly simplifying the setup with an auxiliary laser. More importantly, because of the intrinsically high frequency/phase correlation between the pump and S-B auxiliary light, the detuning between the pump and resonance frequency is automatically almost fixed, allowing the 18 times larger "effective"soliton existence range than the conventional method using an independent auxiliary laser, as well as the scanning of the soliton comb of more than 10 GHz without using microheaters.

Computationally image-corrected dual-comb microscopy with a free-running single-cavity dual-comb fiber laser

Dual-comb microscopy (DCM), an interesting imaging modality based on the optical-frequency-comb (OFC) mode and image pixel one-to-one correspondence, benefits from scan-less full-field imaging and simultaneous confocal amplitude and phase imaging. However, the two fully frequency-stabilized OFC sources requirement hampers DCM practicality due to the complexity and costs. Here, a bidirectional single-cavity dual-comb fiber laser (SCDCFL) is adopted as a DCM low-complexity OFC source. Computational image correction reduces the image blur caused by the SCDCFL residual timing jitter. Nanometer-order step surface profilometry with a 14.0 nm uncertainty highlights the image-corrected DCM effectiveness. The proposed method enhances the DCM versality and practicality.

Optical image amplification in dual-comb microscopy by use of optical-fiber-amplified interferogram

Dual-comb microscopy (DCM), based on a combination of dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with two-dimensional spectral encoding (2D-SE), is a promising method for scan-less confocal laser microscopy giving an amplitude and phase image contrast with the confocality. However, signal loss in a 2D-SE optical system hampers increase in image acquisition rate due to decreased signa-to-noise ratio. In this article, we demonstrated optical image amplification in DCM with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Combined use of image-encoded DCS interferogram and EDFA benefits from not only the batch amplification of amplitude and phase images but also significant rejection of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) background. Effectiveness of the optical-image-amplified DCM is highlighted in the single-shot quantitative nanometer-order surface topography and the real-time movie of polystyrene beads dynamics under water convection. The proposed method will be a powerful tool for real-time observation of surface topography and fast dynamic phenomena.

Comb-mode-resolved adaptive sampling terahertz dual-comb spectroscopy with a free-running single-cavity fiber laser

Mode-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging spectroscopic tool with the potential to simultaneously achieve a broad spectral coverage and ultrahigh spectral resolution in terahertz (THz) spectroscopy. However, the need for two independently stabilized ultrafast lasers significantly hampers the potential application of DCS techniques. In this article, we demonstrate mode-resolved DCS in the THz region based on a free-running single-cavity dual-comb fiber laser with adaptive sampling. Low-pressure spectroscopy of acetonitrile gas with absorption features approaching the Doppler limit is demonstrated by comb-mode-resolved measurements with a spectral sampling spacing of 48.8 MHz, a spectral resolution of less than 5 MHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of ~50 dB. The successful demonstration of the proposed method clearly indicates the great potential for the realization of low-complexity, MHz-resolution THz spectroscopy instrumentation.

Picometer-resolution dual-comb spectroscopy with a free-running fibre laser

Dual-comb spectroscopy utilizes two sets of comb lines with slightly different comb-tooth-spacings, and optical spectral information is acquired by measuring the radio-frequency beat notes between the sets of comb lines. It holds the promise as a real-time, high-resolution analytical spectroscopy tool for a range of applications. However, the stringent requirement on the coherence between comb lines from two separate lasers and the sophisticated control system to achieve that have confined the technology to the top metrology laboratories. By replacing control electronics with an all-optical dual-comb lasing scheme, a simplified dual-comb spectroscopy scheme is demonstrated using just one dual-wavelength, passively mode-locked fiber laser. Dual-comb pulses with a repetition-frequency difference determined by the intracavity dispersion are shown to be sufficiently stable against common-mode cavity drifts and noises. As sufficiently low relative linewidth is maintained between two sets of comb lines, capability to resolve RF beat notes between comb teeth and picometer-wide optical spectral features is demonstrated using a simple data acquisition and processing system in an all-fiber setup. Possibility to use energy-efficient, free-running fiber lasers with a small comb-tooth-spacing could enable the realization of low-cost dual-comb spectroscopy systems affordable to more applications.

Real-time absolute frequency measurement of continuous-wave terahertz wave based on dual terahertz combs of photocarriers with different frequency spacings

Real-time measurement of the absolute frequency of continuous-wave terahertz (CW-THz) waves is required for characterization and frequency calibration of practical CW-THz sources. We proposed a method for real-time monitoring of the absolute frequency of CW-THz waves involving temporally parallel, i.e., simultaneous, measurement of two pairs of beat frequencies and laser repetition frequencies based on dual THz combs of photocarriers (PC-THz combs) with different frequency spacings. To demonstrate the method, THz-comb-referenced spectrum analyzers were constructed with a dual configuration based on dual femtosecond lasers. Regardless of the presence or absence of frequency control in the PC-THz combs, a frequency precision of 10-11 was achieved at a measurement rate of 100 Hz. Furthermore, large fluctuation of the CW-THz frequencies, crossing several modes of the PC-THz combs, was correctly monitored in real time. The proposed method will be a powerful tool for the research and development of practical CW-THz sources, and other applications.

Adaptive sampling dual terahertz comb spectroscopy using free-running dual femtosecond lasers

Dual terahertz (THz) comb spectroscopy is a promising methods for high accuracy, high resolution, and broadband THz spectroscopy because the mode-resolved THz comb spectrum possesses both characteristics of broadband THz radiation and narrow-linewidth continuous-wave THz radiation and all frequency mode of THz comb can be phase-locked to a microwave frequency standard. However, requirement of stabilized dual femtosecond lasers has often hindered wide use of this method. In this article, we demonstrated the adaptive sampling, dual THz comb spectroscopy, enabling use of free-running dual femtosecond lasers. To correct the non-linearity of time and frequency scale caused by the laser timing jitter, an adaptive sampling clock is generated by dual THz-comb-referenced spectrum analysers and is used for a timing signal in a data acquisition board. The demonstrated results did not only indicate the implementation of dual THz comb spectroscopy with free-running dual lasers but also implied the superiority of its spectroscopic performance over the dual THz comb spectroscopy with stabilized dual lasers.

Super-resolution discrete-Fourier-transform spectroscopy using precisely periodic radiation beyond time window size limitation

Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS) has been widely used in a variety of fields in research, industry, and medicine due to its high signal-to-noise ratio, simultaneous acquisition of signals in a broad spectrum, and versatility for different radiation sources. Further improvement of the spectroscopic performance will widen its scope of applications. Here, we demonstrate improved spectral resolution by overcoming the time window limitation using discrete Fourier transform spectroscopy (dFTS) with precisely periodic pulsed terahertz (THz) radiation. Since infinitesimal resolution can be achieved at periodically discrete frequencies when the time window size is exactly matched to the repetition period T, a combination of THz-dFTS with a spectral interleaving technique achieves a spectral resolution only limited by the spectral interleaving interval. Linewidths narrower than 1/(50T) are fully resolved allowing the attribution of rotational-transition absorption lines of low-pressure molecular gases within a 1.25 MHz band. The proposed method represents a powerful tool to improve spectrometer performance and accelerate the practical use of various types of FTS.

Gapless dual-comb spectroscopy in terahertz region

We demonstrated combination of gapless terahertz (THz) comb with dual-comb spectroscopy, namely gapless dual-THz-comb spectroscopy, to achieve the spectral resolution equal to width of the THz comb tooth. The gapless THz comb was realized by interpolating frequency gaps between the comb teeth with sweeping of a laser mode-locked frequency. The demonstration of low-pressure gas spectroscopy with gapless dual-THz-comb spectroscopy clearly indicated that the spectral resolution was decreased down to 2.5-MHz width of the comb tooth and the spectral accuracy was enhanced to 10-6 within the spectral range of 1THz. The proposed method will be a powerful tool to simultaneously achieve high resolution, high accuracy, and broad spectral coverage in THz spectroscopy.
