A Study of Transducer based End-to-End ASR with ESPnet: Architecture, Auxiliary Loss and Decoding Strategies

In this study, we present recent developments of models trained with the RNN-T loss in ESPnet. It involves the use of various architectures such as recently proposed Conformer, multi-task learning with different auxiliary criteria and multiple decoding strategies, including our own proposition. Through experiments and benchmarks, we show that our proposed systems can be competitive against other state-of-art systems on well-known datasets such as LibriSpeech and AISHELL-1. Additionally, we demonstrate that these models are promising against other already implemented systems in ESPnet in regards to both performance and decoding speed, enabling the possibility to have powerful systems for a streaming task. With these additions, we hope to expand the usefulness of the ESPnet toolkit for the research community and also give tools for the ASR industry to deploy our systems in realistic and production environments.

Large N Analysis of $T\bar{T}$-deformation and Unavoidable Negative-norm States

We study non-perturbative quantum aspects of $T\bar{T}$-deformation of a free $O(N)$ vector model by employing the large $N$ limit. It is shown that bound states of the original field appear and inevitably become negative-norm states. In particular, the bound states can be regarded as the states of the conformal mode in a gravitational theory, where the Liouville action is induced with the coefficient proportional to the minus of central charge. To make the theory positive-definite, some modification is required so as to preserve diffeomorphism invariance due to the Faddeev-Popov ghosts with a negative central charge.

Resonating AdS soliton

The AdS soliton is a nonsingular spacetime that has a flat conformal boundary with a compact $S^1$ direction. We find a horizonless cohomogeneity-1 metric that describes nonlinear gravitational oscillations of the AdS soliton in five dimensions. We call this spacetime the resonating AdS soliton. This solution is obtained as the nonlinear extension of normal modes of the AdS soliton dual to spin-2 glueball excitations. The boundary energy momentum tensor of the resonating AdS soliton has time periodic components, and it is interpreted as a coherently excited state in the dual field theory. Physical quantities of the resonating AdS soliton are multivalued at a fixed energy, suggesting a transition between different frequency solutions. The energy of the resonating AdS soliton is higher than that of the undeformed AdS soliton, in accordance with the positive energy conjecture proposed by Horowitz and Myers.

Superradiant instability of black resonators and geons

Black resonators and geons in global AdS are rapidly rotating, low-energy solutions with a helical Killing field. We study the linear mode stability of equal angular momenta, five-dimensional black resonators and geons under scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations. We find that black resonators are unstable to the superradiant instability, in agreement with previously known results. Perhaps surprisingly, many geons appear linearly stable, despite having an ergoregion. This apparent stability implies that geons are important long-lived, low-energy states in the dual gauge theory. However, we do find that geons are unstable within a certain range of parameter space. We comment on the nature of this instability and to its possible endpoints. We also report on new non-spinning oscillating geons, which we construct within a cohomogeneity two ansatz. Given the existing arguments that suggest our linear stability results may be extended nonlinearly, our findings indicate that most geons are generic and long-lived solutions.

Cool baryon and quark matter in holographic QCD

We establish a holographic bottom-up model which covers both the baryonic and quark matter phases in cold and dense QCD. This is obtained by including the baryons using simple approximation schemes in the V-QCD model, which also includes the backreaction of the quark matter to the dynamics of pure Yang-Mills. We examine two approaches for homogeneous baryon matter: baryons as a thin layer of noninteracting matter in the holographic bulk, and baryons with a homogeneous bulk gauge field. We find that the second approach exhibits phenomenologically reasonable features. At zero temperature, the vacuum, baryon, and quark matter phases are separated by strongly first order transitions as the chemical potential varies. The equation of state in the baryonic phase is found to be stiff, i.e., the speed of sound clearly exceeds the value $c_s^2=1/3$ of conformal plasmas at high baryon densities.

Photonic black resonators and photon stars in AdS$_5$

Rapidly rotating Myers-Perry-AdS$_5$ (MPAdS$_5$) black holes are shown to be unstable against rotational superradiance of a Maxwell field. From the onset of the instability, time-periodic neutral black hole solutions equipped with a nontrivial electromagnetic wave are obtained, which we call {\it photonic black resonators}. In the horizonless limit, they reduce to geon solutions which may be called {\it photon stars}. Specifically, we introduce a cohomogeneity-1 ansatz for the metric and Maxwell field and construct such solutions with an $R\times SU(2)$ isometry group. We compute thermodynamic quantities and obtain phase diagrams. It turns out that a photonic black resonator has a higher entropy than a MPAdS$_5$ black hole, while it also has a smaller entropy than a black resonator without the Maxwell field. This suggests what is expected for nonlinear dynamics following the Maxwell superradiant instability with the $SU(2)$ isometry.

Notes on frequencies and timescales in nonequilibrium Green's functions

We discuss the ringdown behavior of the nonequilibrium Green's function in a strongly coupled theory with the holographic dual with a focus on quasinormal-mode equilibration. We study the time resolved spectral function for a probe scalar in Vaidya-AdS spacetime in detail as a complement to the preceding work arXiv:1603.06935 using further numerical results in very nonadiabatic temperature changes. It is shown that the relaxation of the nonequilibrium spectral function obtained through the Wigner transform is governed by the lowest quasinormal mode frequency. The timescale of the background temperature change is also observed in the frequency analysis. We then consider a toy model motivated by the quasinormal mode behavior and discuss these main features in numerical results are simply realized.

Thermalization and confinement in strongly coupled gauge theories

Quantum field theories of strongly interacting matter sometimes have a useful holographic description in terms of the variables of a gravitational theory in higher dimensions. This duality maps time dependent physics in the gauge theory to time dependent solutions of the Einstein equations in the gravity theory. In order to better understand the process by which "real world" theories such as QCD behave out of thermodynamic equilibrium, we study time dependent perturbations to states in a model of a confining, strongly coupled gauge theory via holography. Operationally, this involves solving a set of non-linear Einstein equations supplemented with specific time dependent boundary conditions. The resulting solutions allow one to comment on the timescale by which the perturbed states thermalize, as well as to quantify the properties of the final state as a function of the perturbation parameters. We comment on the influence of the dual gauge theory's confinement scale on these results, as well as the appearance of a previously anticipated universal scaling regime in the "abrupt quench" limit.

Time-dependence of the holographic spectral function: Diverse routes to thermalisation

We develop a new method for computing the holographic retarded propagator in generic (non-)equilibrium states using the state/geometry map. We check that our method reproduces the thermal spectral function given by the Son-Starinets prescription. The time-dependence of the spectral function of a relevant scalar operator is studied in a class of non-equilibrium states. The latter are represented by AdS-Vaidya geometries with an arbitrary parameter characterising the timescale for the dual state to transit from an initial thermal equilibrium to another due to a homogeneous quench. For long quench duration, the spectral function indeed follows the thermal form at the instantaneous effective temperature adiabatically, although with a slight initial time delay and a bit premature thermalisation. At shorter quench durations, several new non-adiabatic features appear: (i) time-dependence of the spectral function is seen much before than that in the effective temperature (advanced time-dependence), (ii) a big transfer of spectral weight to frequencies greater than the initial temperature occurs at an intermediate time (kink formation) and (iii) new peaks with decreasing amplitudes but in greater numbers appear even after the effective temperature has stabilised (persistent oscillations). We find four broad routes to thermalisation for lower values of spatial momenta. At higher values of spatial momenta, kink formations and persistent oscillations are suppressed, and thermalisation time decreases. The general thermalisation pattern is globally top-down, but a closer look reveals complexities.

Dynamical AdS strings across horizons

We examine the nonlinear classical dynamics of a fundamental string in anti-de Sitter spacetime. The string is dual to the flux tube between an external quark-antiquark pair in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We perturb the string by shaking the endpoints and compute its time evolution numerically. We find that with sufficiently strong perturbations the string continues extending and plunges into the Poincaré horizon. In the evolution, effective horizons are also dynamically created on the string worldsheet. The quark and antiquark are thus causally disconnected, and the string transitions to two straight strings. The forces acting on the endpoints vanish with a power law whose slope depends on the perturbations. The condition for this transition to occur is that energy injection exceeds the static energy between the quark-antiquark pair.

Thermalization in a Holographic Confining Gauge Theory

Time dependent perturbations of states in the holographic dual of a 3+1 dimensional confining theory are considered. The perturbations are induced by varying the coupling to the theory's most relevant operator. The dual gravitational theory belongs to a class of Einstein-dilaton theories which exhibit a mass gap at zero temperature and a first order deconfining phase transition at finite temperature. The perturbation is realized in various thermal bulk solutions by specifying time dependent boundary conditions on the scalar, and we solve the fully backreacted Einstein-dilaton equations of motion subject to these boundary conditions. We compute the characteristic time scale of many thermalization processes, noting that in every case we examine, this time scale is determined by the imaginary part of the lowest lying quasi-normal mode of the final state black brane. We quantify the dependence of this final state on parameters of the quench, and construct a dynamical phase diagram. Further support for a universal scaling regime in the abrupt quench limit is provided.

Turbulent strings in AdS/CFT

We study nonlinear dynamics of the flux tube between an external quark-antiquark pair in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT duality. In the gravity side, the flux tube is realized by a fundamental string whose endpoints are attached to the AdS boundary. We perturb the endpoints in various ways and numerically compute the time evolution of the nonlinearly oscillating string. As a result, cusps can form on the string, accompanied by weak turbulence and power law behavior in the energy spectrum. When cusps traveling on the string reach the boundary, we observe the divergence of the force between the quark and antiquark. Minimal amplitude of the perturbation below which cusps do not form is also investigated. No cusp formation is found when the string moves in all four AdS space directions, and in this case an inverse energy cascade follows a direct cascade.

A Simple Holographic Model of a Charged Lattice

We use holography to compute the conductivity in an inhomogeneous charged scalar background. We work in the probe limit of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a charged scalar. The background has zero charge density and is constructed by turning on a scalar source deformation with a striped profile. We solve for fluctuations by making use of a Fourier series expansion. This approach turns out to be useful for understanding which couplings become important in our inhomogeneous background. At zero temperature, the conductivity is computed analytically in a small amplitude expansion. At finite temperature, it is computed numerically by truncating the Fourier series to a relevant set of modes. In the real part of the conductivity along the direction of the stripe, we find a Drude-like peak and a delta function with a negative weight. These features are understood from the point of view of spectral weight transfer.

Dynamical Meson Melting in Holography

We discuss mesons in thermalizing gluon backgrounds in the N=2 supersymmetric QCD using the gravity dual. We numerically compute the dynamics of a probe D7-brane in the Vaidya-AdS geometry that corresponds to a D3-brane background thermalizing from zero to finite temperatures by energy injection. In static backgrounds, it has been known that there are two kinds of brane embeddings where the brane intersects the black hole or not. They correspond to the phases with melted or stable mesons. In our dynamical setup, we obtain three cases depending on final temperatures and injection time scales. The brane stays outside of the black hole horizon when the final temperature is low, while it intersects the horizon and settles down to the static equilibrium state when the final temperature is high. Between these two cases, we find the overeager case where the brane dynamically intersects the horizon although the final temperature is not high enough for a static brane to intersect the horizon. The interpretation of this phenomenon in the dual field theory is meson melting due to non-thermal effects caused by rapid energy injection. In addition, we comment on the late time evolution of the brane and a possibility of its reconnection.

Impurity effect in a holographic superconductor

We consider a holographic superconductor with homogeneous impurities added. We start with the holographic Abelian-Higgs model for s-wave superconductivity, and turn on a coupling between the gauge field and a new massive gauge field that is introduced for impurities, whose effect is examined in the probe limit. We find that the condensation of the massive gauge field is induced in the superconducting phase. When the coupling is sufficiently large, the mass gap in the optical conductivity disappears. A resonance peak is found in the conductivity for the massive vector field.

Anomaly-induced charges in baryons

We show that quantum chiral anomaly of QCD in magnetic backgrounds induces a novel structure of electric charge inside baryons. To illustrate the anomaly effect, we employ the Skyrme model for baryons, with the anomaly-induced gauged Wess-Zumino term (π_0 + (multi-pion)) E_i B_i. Due to this term, the Skyrmions giving a local pion condensation ((π_0 + (multi-pion)) \neq 0) necessarily become a local charge source, in the background magnetic field B_i. We present detailed evaluation of the anomaly effects, and calculate the total induced charge, for various baryons in the magnetic field.

Anomaly-induced charges in nucleons

We show a novel charge structure of baryons in electromagnetic field due to the chiral anomaly. A key connection is to treat baryons as solitons of mesons. We use Skyrmions to calculate the charge distributions in a single nucleon and find an additional charge. We also perform calculations of charge distribution for classical multi-baryons with B=2, 3,...,8 and 17; they show amusing charge distributions.

Flows to Schrodinger Geometries

We construct RG flow solutions interpolating AdS and Schrodinger geometries in Abelian Higgs models obtained from consistent reductions of type IIB supergravity and M-theory. We find that z=2 Schrodinger geometries can be realized at the minima of scalar potentials of these models, where a scalar charged under U(1) gauge symmetry obtains a nonzero vacuum expectation value. The RG flows are induced by an operator deformation of the dual CFT. The flows are captured by fake superpotentials of the theories.

Long-distance properties of baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model

We reconsider the realization of baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model. In this theory, which is the gravity dual of a QCD-like theory, baryons appear as soliton solutions. These solitons were approximated as flat-space instantons in previous studies. However, with this approximation, it has been shown that one does not reproduce some model-independent predictions for the behavior of baryon electromagnetic form factors which are connected with long-range pion physics. This made it appear that the long-range pion physics of baryons may be hidden in (intractable) α' corrections in the gravity dual. In this paper, we study the long-range properties of baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model without relying on the flat-space instanton approximation. The solution we obtain gives the correct result for the model-independent ratio of form factors, implying that the model captures the expected infrared properties of baryons without the need to go beyond the leading order in the α' expansion.

Toward Bound-State Approach to Strangeness in Holographic QCD

An approach to realize a hyperon as a bound-state of a two-flavor baryon and a kaon is considered in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD, which approach has been known in the Skyrme model as the bound-state approach to strangeness. As a simple case of study, pseudo-scalar kaon is considered as fluctuation around a baryon. In this case, strongly-bound hyperon-states are absent, different from the case of the Skyrme model. Observed is a weak bound-state which would correspond to Λ(1405).
