A new family of $AdS_4$ S-folds in type IIB string theory

We construct infinite new classes of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solutions of type IIB string theory which have non-trivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy along the $S^1$ direction. The solutions are supersymmetric and holographically dual, generically, to $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs in $d=3$. The solutions are first constructed as $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ solutions in $D=5$ $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and then uplifted to $D=10$. Unlike the known $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ S-fold solutions, there is no continuous symmetry associated with the $\mathbb{R}$ direction. The solutions all arise as limiting cases of Janus solutions of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory which are supported both by a different value of the coupling constant on either side of the interface, as well as by fermion and boson mass deformations. As special cases, the construction recovers three known S-fold constructions, preserving $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and 4 supersymmetry, as well as a recently constructed $\mathcal{N}=1$ $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solution (not S-folded). We also present some novel "one-sided Janus" solutions that are non-singular.

Consistent truncations of supergravity and $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS RG flows in $4d$ SCFTs

With the purpose of holographically describing flows from a large family of four dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ conformal field theories, we discuss truncations of seven dimensional supergravity to five dimensions. We write explicitly the reduced gauged supergravity and find BPS equations for simple configurations. Lifting these flows to eleven dimensions or Massive IIA supergravity, we present string duals to RG flows from strongly coupled conformal theories when deformed by marginal and/or relevant operators. We further discuss observables common to infinite families of ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ QFTs in this context.

Consistent KK truncations for M5-branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces

We construct a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of $D=11$ supergravity on $Σ_2\times S^4$, where $Σ_2=S^2,\mathbb{R}^2$ or $H^2$, or a quotient thereof, at the level of the bosonic fields. The result is a gauged $N=4$, $D=5$ supergravity theory coupled to three vector multiplets, with the gauging lying in an $SO(2)\times SE(3)\subset SO(5,3)$ subgroup of the $SO(1,1)\times SO(5,3)$ global symmetry group of the ungauged theory. For $Σ_2=H^2$, the $D=5$ theory has a maximally supersymmetric $AdS_5$ vacuum which uplifts to the known solution of $D=11$ supergravity corresponding to M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface with genus greater than one and dual to an $N=2$ SCFT in $d=4$. For $Σ_2=S^2$, we find two $AdS_5$ solutions, one of which is new, and both of which are unstable. There is an additional subtruncation to an $N=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets, with very special real manifold $SO(1,1)\times SO(1,1)$, and a single hypermultiplet, with quaternionic Kähler manifold $SU(2,1)/S[U(2)\times U(1)]$ and gauging associated with an $SO(2)\times\mathbb{R}\subset SU(2,1)$ subgroup.

Boomerang RG flows with intermediate conformal invariance

For a class of $D=5$ holographic models we construct boomerang RG flow solutions that start in the UV at an $AdS_5$ vacuum and end up at the same vacuum in the IR. The RG flows are driven by deformations by relevant operators that explicitly break translation invariance. For specific models, such that they admit another $AdS_5$ solution, $AdS_5^c$, we show that for large enough deformations the RG flows approach an intermediate scaling regime with approximate conformal invariance governed by $AdS^c_5$. For these flows we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy and the entropic $c$-function for the RG flows. The latter is not monotonic, but it does encapsulate the degrees of freedom in each scaling region. For a different set of models, we find boomerang RG flows with intermediate scaling governed by an $AdS_2\times\mathbb{R}^3$ solution which breaks translation invariance. Furthermore, for large enough deformations these models have interesting and novel thermal insulating ground states for which the entropy vanishes as the temperature goes to zero, but not as a power-law. Remarkably, the thermal diffusivity and the butterfly velocity for these new insulating ground states are related via $D=Ev^2_B/(2πT)$, with $E(T)\to 0.5$ as $T\to 0$.

Fermionic Response in Finite-Density ABJM Theory with Broken Symmetry

We calculate fermionic response in domain wall backgrounds of four-dimensional gauged supergravity interpolating between distinct stable AdS vacua. The backgrounds, found by Bobev et al., are holographically dual to zero-temperature states of ABJM theory at finite density for monopole charge and are similar to zero-temperature limits of holographic superconductors, but with a symmetry-breaking source as well. The condensed scalar mixes charged and neutral fields dual to composite fermionic operators in the Dirac equations. Both gapped and gapless bands of stable quasiparticles are found.

Thermalization and confinement in strongly coupled gauge theories

Quantum field theories of strongly interacting matter sometimes have a useful holographic description in terms of the variables of a gravitational theory in higher dimensions. This duality maps time dependent physics in the gauge theory to time dependent solutions of the Einstein equations in the gravity theory. In order to better understand the process by which "real world" theories such as QCD behave out of thermodynamic equilibrium, we study time dependent perturbations to states in a model of a confining, strongly coupled gauge theory via holography. Operationally, this involves solving a set of non-linear Einstein equations supplemented with specific time dependent boundary conditions. The resulting solutions allow one to comment on the timescale by which the perturbed states thermalize, as well as to quantify the properties of the final state as a function of the perturbation parameters. We comment on the influence of the dual gauge theory's confinement scale on these results, as well as the appearance of a previously anticipated universal scaling regime in the "abrupt quench" limit.

Thermalization in a Holographic Confining Gauge Theory

Time dependent perturbations of states in the holographic dual of a 3+1 dimensional confining theory are considered. The perturbations are induced by varying the coupling to the theory's most relevant operator. The dual gravitational theory belongs to a class of Einstein-dilaton theories which exhibit a mass gap at zero temperature and a first order deconfining phase transition at finite temperature. The perturbation is realized in various thermal bulk solutions by specifying time dependent boundary conditions on the scalar, and we solve the fully backreacted Einstein-dilaton equations of motion subject to these boundary conditions. We compute the characteristic time scale of many thermalization processes, noting that in every case we examine, this time scale is determined by the imaginary part of the lowest lying quasi-normal mode of the final state black brane. We quantify the dependence of this final state on parameters of the quench, and construct a dynamical phase diagram. Further support for a universal scaling regime in the abrupt quench limit is provided.

Fermi surface behavior in the ABJM M2-brane theory

We calculate fermionic Green's functions for states of the three-dimensional ABJM M2-brane theory at large N using the gauge-gravity correspondence. We embed extremal black brane solutions in four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity, obtain the linearized Dirac equations for each spin-1/2 mode that cannot mix with a gravitino, and solve these equations with infalling boundary conditions to calculate retarded Green's functions. For generic values of the chemical potentials, we find Fermi surfaces with universally non-Fermi liquid behavior, matching the situation for four-dimensional N=4 Super-Yang-Mills. Fermi surface singularities appear and disappear discontinuously at the point with all chemical potentials equal, reminiscent of a quantum critical point. One limit of parameter space has zero entropy at zero temperature, and fermionic fluctuations are perfectly stable inside an energy region around the Fermi surface. An ambiguity in the quantization of the fermions is resolved by supersymmetry.

Gravitational collapse and thermalization in the hard wall model

We study a simple example of holographic thermalization in a confining field theory: the homogeneous injection of energy in the hard wall model. Working in an amplitude expansion, we find black brane formation for sufficiently fast energy injection and a scattering wave solution for sufficiently slow injection. We comment on our expectations for more sophisticated holographic QCD models.

Heavy ions and string theory

We review a selection of recent developments in the application of ideas of string theory to heavy ion physics. Our topics divide naturally into equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena. On the non-equilibrium side, we discuss generalizations of Bjorken flow, numerical simulations of black hole formation in asymptotically anti-de Sitter geometries, equilibration in the dual field theory, and hard probes. On the equilibrium side, we summarize improved holographic QCD, extraction of transport coefficients, inclusion of chemical potentials, and approaches to the phase diagram. We close with some possible directions for future research.

Minding the Gap in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills

We analyze fermionic response in the geometry holographically dual to zero-temperature N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory with two equal nonvanishing chemical potentials, which is characterized by a singular horizon and zero ground state entropy. We show that fermionic fluctuations are completely stable within a gap in energy around a Fermi surface singularity, beyond which non-Fermi liquid behavior returns. This gap disappears abruptly once the final charge is turned on, and is associated to a discontinuity in the corresponding chemical potential. We also show that the singular near-horizon geometry lifts to a smooth AdS_3 x R^3, and interpret the gap as a region where the quasiparticle momentum is spacelike in six dimensions due to the momentum component in the Kaluza-Klein direction, corresponding to the final charge.

Fermi surfaces in maximal gauged supergravity

We obtain fermion fluctuation equations around extremal charged black hole geometries in maximal gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions, and we demonstrate that their solutions display Fermi surface singularities for the dual conformal field theories at finite chemical potential. The four-dimensional case is a massless charged fermion, while in five dimensions we find a massive charged fermion with a Pauli coupling. In both cases, the corresponding scaling exponent is less than one half, leading to non-Fermi liquid behavior with no stable quasiparticles, although some excitations have widths more than ten times smaller than their excitation energy. In the five-dimensional case, both the Fermi momentum and the scaling exponent appear to have simple values, and a Luttinger calculation suggests that the gauginos may carry most of the charge of the black hole.

Fermi surfaces in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory

We investigate and classify Fermi surface behavior for a set of fermionic modes in a family of backgrounds holographically dual to N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature with two distinct chemical potentials. We numerically solve fluctuation equations for every spin-1/2 field in five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity not mixing with gravitini. Different modes manifest two, one or zero Fermi surface singularities, all associated to non-Fermi liquids, and we calculate dispersion relations and widths of excitations. We study two limits where the zero-temperature entropy vanishes. In one limit, a Fermi surface approaches a marginal Fermi liquid, which we demonstrate analytically, and conductivity calculations show a hard gap with the current dual to the active gauge field superconducting, while the other is insulating. In the other limit, conductivities reveal a soft gap with the roles of the gauge fields reversed.

Dynamic critical phenomena at a holographic critical point

We study time-dependent perturbations to a family of five-dimensional black hole spacetimes constructed as a holographic model of the QCD phase diagram. We use the results to calculate two transport coefficients, the bulk viscosity and conductivity, as well as the associated baryon diffusion constant, throughout the phase diagram. Near the critical point in the T-mu plane, the transport coefficients remain finite, although their derivatives diverge, and the diffusion goes to zero. This provides further evidence that large-N_c gauge theories suppress convective transport. We also find a divergence in the low-temperature bulk viscosity, outside the region expected to match QCD, and compare the results to the transport behavior of known R-charged black holes.

preprint2010arXiv

A holographic critical point

We numerically construct a family of five-dimensional black holes exhibiting a line of first-order phase transitions terminating at a critical point at finite chemical potential and temperature. These black holes are constructed so that the equation of state and baryon susceptibilities approximately match QCD lattice data at vanishing chemical potential. The critical endpoint in the particular model we consider has temperature 143 MeV and chemical potential 783 MeV. Critical exponents are calculated, with results that are consistent with mean-field scaling relations.
