The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Deriving dilaton potential in improved holographic QCD from meson spectrum

We derive an explicit form of the dilaton potential in improved holographic QCD (IHQCD) from the experimental data of the $ρ$ meson spectrum. For this purpose we make use of the emergent bulk geometry obtained by deep learning from the hadronic data in arXiv:2005.02636. Requiring that the geometry is a solution of an IHQCD derives the corresponding dilaton potential backwards. This determines the bulk action in a data-driven way, which enables us at the same time to ensure that the deep learning proposal is a consistent gravity. Furthermore, we find that the resulting potential satisfies the requirements normally imposed in IHQCD, and that the holographic Wilson loop for the derived model exhibits quark confinement.

Deep Learning and AdS/QCD

We propose a deep learning method to build an AdS/QCD model from the data of hadron spectra. A major problem of generic AdS/QCD models is that a large ambiguity is allowed for the bulk gravity metric with which QCD observables are holographically calculated. We adopt the experimentally measured spectra of $ρ$ and $a_2$ mesons as training data, and perform a supervised machine learning which determines concretely a bulk metric and a dilaton profile of an AdS/QCD model. Our deep learning (DL) architecture is based on the AdS/DL correspondence (arXiv:1802.08313) where the deep neural network is identified with the emergent bulk spacetime.

Islands in Schwarzschild black holes

We study the Page curve for asymptotically flat eternal Schwarzschild black holes in four and higher spacetime dimensions. Before the Page time, the entanglement entropy grows linearly in time. After the Page time, the entanglement entropy of a given region outside the black hole is largely modified by the emergence of an island, which extends to the outer vicinity of the event horizon. As a result, it remains a constant value which reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, consistent with the finiteness of the von Neumann entropy for an eternal black hole.

Neural ODE and Holographic QCD

The neural ordinary differential equation (Neural ODE) is a novel machine learning architecture whose weights are smooth functions of the continuous depth. We apply the Neural ODE to holographic QCD by regarding the weight functions as a bulk metric, and train the machine with lattice QCD data of chiral condensate at finite temperature. The machine finds consistent bulk geometry at various values of temperature and discovers the emergent black hole horizon in the holographic bulk automatically. The holographic Wilson loops calculated with the emergent machine-learned bulk spacetime have consistent temperature dependence of confinement and Debye-screening behavior. In machine learning models with physically interpretable weights, the Neural ODE frees us from discretization artifact leading to difficult ingenuity of hyperparameters, and improves numerical accuracy to make the model more trustworthy.

Nuclear states and spectra in holographic QCD

A new method to study nuclear physics via holographic QCD is proposed. Multiple baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto background are described by a matrix model which is a low energy effective theory of D-branes of the baryon vertices. We study the quantum mechanics of the matrix model and calculate the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. The obtained states are found to coincide with known nuclear and baryonic states, and have appropriate statistics and charges. Calculated spectra of the baryon/nucleus for small baryon numbers show good agreement with experimental data. For hyperons, the Gell-Mann--Okubo formula is approximately derived. Baryon resonances up to spin $5/2$ and isospin $5/2$ and dibaryon spectra are obtained and compared with experimental data. The model partially explains even the magic numbers of light nuclei, $N=2,8$ and $20$.

Out-of-time-order correlator in coupled harmonic oscillators

Exponential growth of thermal out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) is an indicator of a possible gravity dual, and a simple toy quantum model showing the growth is being looked for. We consider a system of two harmonic oscillators coupled nonlinearly with each other, and numerically observe that the thermal OTOC grows exponentially in time. The system is well-known to be classically chaotic, and is a reduction of Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The exponential growth is certified because the growth exponent (quantum Lyapunov exponent) of the thermal OTOC is well matched with the classical Lyapunov exponent, including their energy/temperature dependence. Even in the presence of the exponential growth in the OTOC, the energy level spacings are not sufficient to judge a Wigner distribution, hence the OTOC is a better indicator of quantum chaos.

Universal Higher-Order Topology from 5D Weyl semimetal: Edge topology, edge Hamiltonian and nested Wilson loop

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) or multipole insulators, hosting peculiar corner states, were discovered [arXiv:1611.07987, arXiv:1708.03636]. It was independently discovered [arXiv:1702.00624] that continuum 5-dimensional (5D) Weyl semimetals generically host the corner states, and so do 4D class A and 3D class AIII topological insulators. In this paper we further confirm that the 5D Weyl semimetals, upon dimensional reduction, lead to universal higher-order topology. First we explain a discrete symmetry protecting the 5D Weyl semimetals, and describe dimensional reductions of the 5D Weyl semimetals to the popular HOTIs in the continuum limit. We calculate the topological charge carried by edge states of the 5D Weyl semimetal, for the most generic boundary condition. The topological charge is a Dirac monopole, which can also be seen from that edge Hamiltonians are always of the form of a 3D Weyl semimetal. This edge topology leads to the edge-of-edge states, or the corner states, generically, suggesting that the 5D Weyl semimetal is thought of as a physical structural origin of corner states in HOTIs. In addition, we explicitly calculate a nested Wilson loop of the 5D Weyl semimetal and find that the topological structure is identical to that of a Wilson loop of a Dirac monopole.

$1/N$ correction in holographic Wilson loop from quantum gravity

We study $1/N$ corrections to a Wilson loop in holographic duality. Extending the AdS/CFT correspondence beyond the large $N$ limit is an important but a subtle issue, as it needs quantum gravity corrections in the gravity side. To find a physical property of the quantum corrected geometry of near-horizon black 0-branes previously obtained by Hyakutake, we evaluate a Euclidean string worldsheet hanging down in the geometry, which corresponds to a rectangular Wilson loop in the $SU(N)$ quantum mechanics with 16 supercharges at a finite temperature with finite $N$. We find that the potential energy defined by the Wilson loop increases due to the $1/N$ correction, therefore the quantum gravity correction weakens the gravitational attraction.

Imaging black holes through AdS/CFT

Thermal states in some quantum field theories (QFTs) correspond to black holes in asymptotically AdS spacetime in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We propose a direct procedure to construct holographic images of the black hole in the bulk from a given response function of the QFT on the boundary. The response function with respect to an external source corresponds to the asymptotic data of the bulk field generated by the source on the AdS boundary. According to the wave optics, we can obtain the images from the bulk field propagating in the bulk spacetime. For a thermal state on two-dimensional sphere dual to Schwarzschild-AdS$_4$ black hole, we demonstrate that the holographic images gravitationally lensed by the black hole can be constructed from the response function. In particular, the Einstein rings on the image can be clearly observed and their radius depends on the total energy of the QFT thermal state. These results are consistent with the size of the photon sphere of the black hole calculated in geometrical optics. This implies that, if there exists a dual gravitational picture for a given quantum system, we would be able to probe existence of the dual black hole by the Einstein rings constructed from observables of the quantum system.

Deep Learning and Holographic QCD

We apply the relation between deep learning (DL) and the AdS/CFT correspondence to a holographic model of QCD. Using a lattice QCD data of the chiral condensate at a finite temperature as our training data, the deep learning procedure holographically determines an emergent bulk metric as neural network weights. The emergent bulk metric is found to have both a black hole horizon and a finite-height IR wall, so shares both the confining and deconfining phases, signaling the cross-over thermal phase transition of QCD. In fact, a quark antiquark potential holographically calculated by the emergent bulk metric turns out to possess both the linear confining part and the Debye screening part, as is often observed in lattice QCD. From this we argue the discrepancy between the chiral symmetry breaking and the quark confinement in the holographic QCD. The DL method is shown to provide a novel data-driven holographic modeling of QCD, and sheds light on the mechanism of emergence of the bulk geometries in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Chaos in chiral condensates in gauge theories

Assigning a chaos index for dynamics of generic quantum field theories is a challenging problem, because the notion of Lyapunov exponent, which is useful for singling out chaotic behaviors, works only in classical systems. We address the issue by using the AdS/CFT correspondence, as the large $N_c$ limit provides a classicalization (other than the standard $\hbar \to 0$) while keeping nontrivial quantum condensation. We demonstrate the chaos in the dynamics of quantum gauge theories: Time evolution of homogeneous quark condensates $\langle \bar{q}q\rangle$ and $\langle \bar{q} γ_5 q\rangle$ in an ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with the $SU(N_c)$ gauge group at large $N_c$ and at large 't Hooft coupling $λ\equiv N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$ exhibits a positive Lyapunov exponent. The chaos dominates the phase space for energy density $E \gtrsim (6\times 10^2)\times m_q^4(N_c/λ^2) $ where $m_q$ is the quark mass. We evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent as a function of $(N_c,λ,E)$ and find that the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD is more chaotic for smaller $N_c$.

Topological Number of Edge States

We show that the edge states of the four-dimensional class A system can have topological charges, which are characterized by Abelian/non-Abelian monopoles. The edge topological charges are a new feature of relations among theories with different dimensions. From this novel viewpoint, we provide a non-Abelian analogue of the TKNN number as an edge topological charge, which is defined by an SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov BPS monopole through an equivalence to Nahm construction. Furthermore, putting a constant magnetic field yields an edge monopole in a non-commutative momentum space, where D-brane methods in string theory facilitate study of edge fermions.

Band spectrum is D-brane

We show that band spectrum of topological insulators can be identified as the shape of D-branes in string theory. The identification is based on a relation between the Berry connection associated with the band structure and the ADHM/Nahm construction of solitons whose geometric realization is available with D-branes. We also show that chiral and helical edge states are identified as D-branes representing a noncommutative monopole.

Conic D-branes

The shape of D-branes is of fundamental interest in string theory. We find that generically D-branes in trivial spacetime can form a conic shape under external uniform forces. Surprisingly, the apex angle is found to be unique, once the spatial dimensions of the cone is given. In particular it is universal irrespective of the external forces. The quantized angle is reminiscent of Taylor cones of hydrodynamic electrospray. We provide explicit D-brane solutions as well as the mechanism of a force balance on the cone, for D-branes in RR and NSNS flux backgrounds. Critical embedding of probe D-branes in AdS/CFT with electric and magnetic fields is in the same category, for which we give an analytic proof of a power-low spectrum of "turbulent meson condensation."

Holographic Heavy Quark Symmetry

We investigate the heavy quark spin symmetry, i.e. the mass degeneracy of pseudo-scalar and vector quarkonia at heavy quark limit, by using the gauge/gravity correspondence. We allow generic D3-like geometry with a flavor D7-brane, to avoid supersymmetric mass degeneracy. For geometries admitting physical QCD-like properties, we find that the mass degeneracy is generically achieved in a good accuracy, up to a few percent mass splitting. We also compute spectra of excited quarkonia states, and discuss comparisons with experiments and quark-model calculations.

Possibility of ferromagnetic neutron matter

We study ferromagnetism at high density of neutrons in the QCD hadron phase, by using the simplest chiral effective model incorporating magnetic fields and the chiral anomaly. Under the assumption of spatial homogeneity, we calculate the energy density as a function of neutron density, with a magnetization and a neutral pion condensation a la Dautry and Neyman. We find that at a high density the energy of the ferromagnetic order is lower than that of the ordinary neutron matter, and the reduction effect is enhanced by the anomaly. Compared to the inhomogeneous phase with the alternating layer structure, our ferromagnetic phase turns out to be unfavored. However, once an axial vector meson condensation is taken into account in our simplest model, the ferromagnetic energy density is lowered significantly, which still leaves some room for a possible realization of a QCD ferromagnetic phase and ferromagnetic magnetars.

Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes

Applying supersymmetric localization for superstring worldsheet theory with N=(1,1) supersymmetries on a cylinder and with arbitrary boundary interactions, we find the most general formula for the Ramond-Ramond (RR) coupling of D-branes. We allow all massive excitations of open superstrings, and find that only a finite number of them can contribute to the formula. The formula is written by Quillen's superconnection which includes higher form gauge fields, and the resultant general Chern-Simons terms are consistent with RR charge quantization. Applying the formula to boundary string field theory of a BPS D9-brane or a D9-antiD9 brane system, we find that any D9-brane creation via massive mode condensation is impossible.

Speed limit in internal space of domain walls via all-order effective action of moduli motion

We find that motion in internal moduli spaces of generic domain walls has an upper bound for its velocity. Our finding is based on our generic formula for all-order effective actions of internal moduli parameter of domain wall solitons. It is known that the Nambu-Goldstone mode $Z$ associated with spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry obeys a Nambu-Goto effective Lagrangian $\sqrt{1 - (\partial_0 Z)^2}$ detecting the speed of light ($|\partial_0 Z|=1$) in the target spacetime. Solitons can have internal moduli parameters as well, associated with a breaking of internal symmetries such as a phase rotation acting on a field. We obtain, for generic domain walls, an effective Lagrangian of the internal moduli $ε$ to all order in $(\partial ε)$. The Lagrangian is given by a function of the Nambu-Goto Lagrangian: $L = g(\sqrt{1 + (\partial_με)^2})$. This shows generically the existence of an upper bound on $\partial_0 ε$, i.e. a speed limit in the internal space. The speed limit exists even for solitons in some non-relativistic field theories, where we find that $ε$ is a type I Nambu-Goldstone mode which also obeys a nonlinear dispersion to reach the speed limit. This offers a possibility of detecting the speed limit in condensed matter experiments.

Towards Holographic Spintronics

We study transport phenomena of total angular momentum in holography, as a first step toward holographic understanding of spin transport phenomena. Spin current, which has both the local Lorentz index for spins and the space-time vector index for current, couples naturally to the bulk spin connection. Therefore the bulk spin connection becomes the source for the boundary spin current. This allows us to evaluate the spin current holographically, with a relation to the stress tensor and metric fluctuations in the bulk. We examine the spin transport coefficients and the thermal spin Hall conductivity in a simple holographic setup.

Universal turbulence on branes in holography

At a meson melting transition in holographic QCD, a weak turbulence of mesons was found with critical embeddings of probe D-branes in gravity duals. The turbulent mesons have a power-law energy distribution $\varepsilon_n \propto (ω_n)^α$ where $ω_n$ is the mass of the $n$-th excited resonance of the meson tower. In this paper, we find that the turbulence power $α$ is universal, irrespective of how the transition is driven, by numerically calculating the power in various static brane setups at criticality. We also find that the power $α$ depends only on the cone dimensions of the probe D-branes.

Electric Field Quench in AdS/CFT

An electric field quench, a suddenly applied electric field, can induce nontrivial dynamics in confining systems which may lead to thermalization as well as a deconfinement transition. In order to analyze this nonequilibrium transitions,we use the AdS/CFT correspondence for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD that has a confining meson sector. We find that the electric field quench causes the deconfinement transition even when the magnitude of the applied electric field is smaller than the critical value for the static case (which is the QCD Schwinger limit for quark-antiquark pair creation). The time dependence is crucial for this phenomenon, and the gravity dual explains it as an oscillation of a D-brane in the bulk AdS spacetime. Interestingly, the deconfinement time takes only discrete values as a function of the magnitude of the electric field. We advocate that the new deconfinement phenomenon is analogous to the exciton Mott transition.

Electromagnetic instability in holographic QCD

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the vacuum decay rate for the Schwinger effect in confining large $N_{c}$ gauge theories. The instability is induced by the quark antiquark pair creation triggered by strong electromagnetic fields. The decay rate is obtained as the imaginary part of the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian evaluated from the D-brane action with a constant electromagnetic field in holographic QCD models such as the Sakai-Sugimoto model and the deformed Sakai-Sugimoto model. The decay rate is found to increase with the magnetic field parallel to the electric field, while it decreases with the magnetic field perpendicular to the electric field. We discuss generic features of a critical electric field as a function of the magnetic field and the QCD string tension in the Sakai-Sugimoto model.

Entropic destruction of heavy quarkonium in non-Abelian plasma from holography

Lattice QCD indicates a large amount of entropy associated with the heavy quark-antiquark pair immersed in the quark-gluon plasma. This entropy grows as a function of the inter-quark distance giving rise to an entropic force that can be very effective in dissociating the bound quarkonium states. In addition, the lattice data show a very sharp peak in the heavy quark-antiquark entropy at the deconfinement transition. Since the quark-gluon plasma around the deconfinement transition is strongly coupled, we employ the holographic correspondence to study the entropy associated with the heavy quark-antiquark pair in two theories: i) ${\cal{N}}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills and ii) a confining Yang-Mills theory obtained by compactification on a Kaluza-Klein circle. In both cases we find the entropy growing with the inter-quark distance and evaluate the effect of the corresponding entropic forces. In the case ii), we find a sharp peak in the entropy near the deconfinement transition, in agreement with the lattice QCD results. This peak in our holographic description arises because the heavy quark pair acts as an eyewitness of the black hole formation in the bulk -- the process that describes the deconfinement transition. In terms of the boundary theory, this entropy likely emerges from the entanglement of a "long string" connecting the quark and antiquark with the rest of the system.

Magnetic instability in AdS/CFT : Schwinger effect and Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian of Supersymmetric QCD

To reveal the Schwinger effect for quarks, i.e., pair creation process of quarks and antiquarks, we derive the vacuum decay rate at strong coupling using AdS/CFT correspondence. Magnetic fields, in addition to the electric field responsible for the pair creation, causes prominent effects on the rate, and is important also in experiments such as RHIC/LHC heavy ion collisions. In this paper, through the gravity dual we obtain the full Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian of N=2 supersymmetric QCD and study the Schwinger mechanism with not only a constant electric field but also a constant magnetic field as external fields. We determine the quark mass and temperature dependence of the Lagrangian. In sharp contrast with the zero magnetic field case, we find that the imaginary part, and thus the vacuum decay rate, diverges in the massless zero-temperature limit. This may be related to a strong instability of the QCD vacuum in strong magnetic fields. The real part of the Lagrangian serves as a generating function for non-linear electro-magnetic responses, and is found such that the Cotton-Mouton effect vanishes. Interestingly, our results of the Schwinger / Cotton-Mouton effects coincide precisely with those of N=2 supersymmetric QED.

Meson turbulence at quark deconfinement from AdS/CFT

Based on the QCD string picture at confining phase, we conjecture that the deconfinement transition always accompanies a condensation of higher meson resonances with a power-law behavior, "meson turbulence". We employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the meson turbulence for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD at large $N_c$ and at strong coupling limit, and find that the energy distribution to each meson level $n$ scales as $n^α$ with the universal scaling $α=-5$. The universality is checked for various ways to attain the quark deconfinement: a static electric field below/around the critical value, a time-dependent electric field quench, and a time-dependent quark mass quench, all result in the turbulent meson condensation with the universal power $α=-5$ around the deconfinement.

Turbulent meson condensation in quark deconfinement

In a QCD-like strongly coupled gauge theory at large N_c, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that heavy quark deconfinement is accompanied by a coherent condensation of higher meson resonances. This is revealed in non-equilibrium deconfinement transitions triggered by static, as well as, quenched electric fields even below the Schwinger limit. There, we observe a "turbulent" energy flow to higher meson modes, which finally results in the quark deconfinement. Our observation is consistent with seeing deconfinement as a condensation of long QCD strings.

Vacuum Instability in Electric Fields via AdS/CFT: Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and Planckian Thermalization

We analyze vacuum instability of strongly coupled gauge theories in a constant electric field using AdS/CFT correspondence. The model is the N=2 1-flavor supersymmetric large N_c QCD in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. We calculate the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian L(E), which encodes the nonlinear response and the quantum decay rate of the vacuum in a background electric field E, from the complex D-brane action in AdS/CFT. We find that the decay rate given by Im L(E) becomes nonzero above a critical electric field set by the confining force between quarks. A large-E expansion of Im L(E) is found to coincide with that of the Schwinger effects in QED, replacing its electron mass by the confining force. Then, the time-dependent response of the system in a strong electric field is solved non-perturbatively, and we observe a universal thermalization at a shortest timescale "Planckian thermalization time" t ~ 1/T ~ E^{-1/2}. Here, T is an effective temperature which quarks feel in the nonequilibrium state with nonzero electric current, calculated in AdS/CFT as a Hawking temperature. Stronger electric fields accelerate the thermalization, and for a realistic value of the electric field in RHIC experiment, we obtain t ~ 1 [fm/c], which is consistent with the believed value.

A Comment on Holographic Luttinger Theorem

Robustness of the Luttinger theorem for fermionic liquids is examined in holography. The statement of the Luttinger theorem, the equality between the fermion charge density and the volume enclosed by the Fermi surface, can be mapped to a Gauss's law in the gravity dual, a la Sachdev. We show that various deformations in the gravity dual, such as inclusion of magnetic fields, a parity-violating theta-term, dilatonic deformations, and higher-derivative corrections, do not violate the holographic derivation of the Luttinger theorem, as long as the theory is in a confining phase. Therefore a robustness of the theorem is found for strongly correlated fermions coupled with strongly coupled sectors which admit gravity duals. On the other hand, in the deconfined phase, we also show that the deficit appearing in the Luttinger theorem is again universal. It measures a total deficit which measures the charge of the deconfined ("fractionalized") fermions, independent of the deformation parameters.

A Landscape in Boundary String Field Theory: New Class of Solutions with Massive State Condensation

We solve the equation of motion of boundary string field theory allowing generic boundary operators quadratic in $X$, and explore string theory non-perturbative vacua with massive state condensation. Using numerical analysis, a large number of new solutions are found. Their energies turn out to distribute densely in the range between the D-brane tension and the energy of the tachyon vacuum. We discuss an interpretation of these solutions as perturbative closed string states. From the cosmological point of view, the distribution of the energies can be regarded as the so-called landscape of string theory, as we have a vast number of non-perturbative string theory solutions including one with small vacuum energy.

Ferromagnetic neutron stars: axial anomaly, dense neutron matter, and pionic wall

We show that a chiral nonlinear sigma model coupled to degenerate neutrons exhibits a ferromagnetic phase at high density. The magnetization is due to the axial anomaly acting on the parallel layers of neutral pion domain walls spontaneously formed at high density. The emergent magnetic field would reach the QCD scale ~ 10^19 [G], which suggests that the quantum anomaly can be a microscopic origin of the magnetars (highly magnetized neutron stars).

Matrix Theory for Baryons: An Overview of Holographic QCD for Nuclear Physics

We provide, for non-experts, a brief overview of holographic QCD and a review of a recent proposal of matrix-description of multi-baryon systems in holographic QCD. Based on the matrix model, we derive the baryon interaction at short distances in multi-flavor holographic QCD. We show that there is a very universal repulsive core of inter-baryon forces for generic number of flavors. This is consistent with a recent lattice QCD analysis for N_f = 2, 3 where repulsive core looks universal. We also provide a comparison of our results with the lattice QCD and the operator product expansion (OPE) analysis.

Anomaly-induced charges in baryons

We show that quantum chiral anomaly of QCD in magnetic backgrounds induces a novel structure of electric charge inside baryons. To illustrate the anomaly effect, we employ the Skyrme model for baryons, with the anomaly-induced gauged Wess-Zumino term (π_0 + (multi-pion)) E_i B_i. Due to this term, the Skyrmions giving a local pion condensation ((π_0 + (multi-pion)) \neq 0) necessarily become a local charge source, in the background magnetic field B_i. We present detailed evaluation of the anomaly effects, and calculate the total induced charge, for various baryons in the magnetic field.

Anomaly-induced charges in nucleons

We show a novel charge structure of baryons in electromagnetic field due to the chiral anomaly. A key connection is to treat baryons as solitons of mesons. We use Skyrmions to calculate the charge distributions in a single nucleon and find an additional charge. We also perform calculations of charge distribution for classical multi-baryons with B=2, 3,...,8 and 17; they show amusing charge distributions.

Chiral Magnetic Effect from Q-balls

We apply a generic framework of linear sigma models for revealing a mechanism of the mysterious phenomenon, the chiral magnetic effect, in quark-gluon plasma. An electric current arises along a background magnetic field, which is given rise to by Q-balls (non-topological solitons) of the linear sigma model with axial anomaly. We find additional alternating current due to quark mass terms. The hadronic Q-balls, baby boson stars, may be created in heavy-ion collisions.

Nucleus from String Theory

In generic holographic QCD, we find that baryons are bound to form a nucleus, and that its radius obeys the empirically-known mass number (A) dependence r A^{1/3} for large A. Our result is robust, since we use only a generic property of D-brane actions in string theory. We also show that nucleons are bound completely in a finite volume. Furthermore, employing a concrete holographic model (derived by Hashimoto, Iizuka, and Yi, describing a multi-baryon system in the Sakai-Sugimoto model), the nuclear radius is evaluated as O(1) x A^{1/3} [fm], which is consistent with experiments.

Rapid Thermalization by Baryon Injection in Gauge/Gravity Duality

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence for strongly coupled gauge theories, we calculate thermalization of mesons caused by a time-dependent change of a baryon number chemical potential. On the gravity side, the thermalization corresponds to a horizon formation on the probe flavor brane in the AdS throat. Since heavy ion collisions are locally approximated by a sudden change of the baryon number chemical potential, we discuss implication of our results to RHIC and LHC experiments, to find a rough estimate of rather rapid thermalization time-scale t_{th} < 1 [fm/c]. We also discuss universality of our analysis against varying gauge theories.

A Matrix Model for Baryons and Nuclear Forces

We propose a new matrix model describing multi-baryon systems. We derive the action from open string theory on the wrapped baryon vertex D-branes embedded in the D4-D8 model of large N holographic QCD. The positions of k baryons are unified into k x k matrices, with spin/isospin of the baryons encoded in a set of k-vectors. Holographic baryons are known to be very small in the large 't Hooft coupling limit, and our model offers a better systematic approach to dynamics of such baryons at short distances. We compute energetics and spectra (k=1), and also short-distance nuclear force (k=2). In particular, we obtain a new size of the holographic baryon and find a precise form of the repulsive core of nucleons. This matrix model complements the instanton soliton picture of holographic baryons, whose small size turned out to be well below the natural length scale of the approximation involved there. Our results show that, nevertheless, the basic properties of holographic baryons obtained there are robust under stringy corrections within a few percents.

Holographic Baryons : Static Properties and Form Factors from Gauge/String Duality

In this paper, we study properties of baryons by using a holographic dual of QCD on the basis of the D4/D8-brane configuration, where baryons are described by a soliton. We first determine the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solution, which allows us to evaluate well-defined currents associated with the U(N_f)_L \times U(N_f)_R chiral symmetry. Using the currents, we compute static quantities of baryons such as charge radii and magnetic moments, and make a quantitative test with experiments. It is emphasized that not only the nucleon but also excited baryons, such as Δ, N(1440), N(1535) etc., can be analyzed systematically in this model. We also investigate the form factors and find that our form factors agree well with the results that are well-established empirically. With the form factors, the effective baryon-baryon-meson cubic coupling constants among their infinite towers in the model can be determined. Some physical implications following from these results are discussed.

Nuclear Force from String Theory

We compute nuclear force in a holographic model of QCD on the basis of a D4-D8 brane configuration in type IIA string theory. Repulsive core of nucleons is quite important in nuclear physics, but its origin has not been well-understood in strongly-coupled QCD. We find that string theory via gauge/string duality deduces this repulsive core at short distance between nucleons. Since baryons in the model are realized as solitons given by Yang-Mills instanton configuration on flavor D8-branes, ADHM construction of two instantons probes well the nucleon interaction at short scale, which provides the nuclear force quantitatively. We obtain, as well as a tensor force, a central force which is strongly repulsive as suggested in experiments and lattice results. In particular, the nucleon-nucleon potential V(r) (as a function of the distance) scales as 1/r^2, which is peculiar to the holographic model. We compare our results with one-boson exchange model using the nucleon-nucleon-meson coupling obtained in our previous paper (arXiv:0806.3122).

Three-Body Nuclear Forces from a Matrix Model

We compute three-body nuclear forces at short distances by using the nuclear matrix model of holographic QCD proposed in our previous paper with P. Yi. We find that the three-body forces at short distances are repulsive for (a) aligned three neutrons with averaged spins, and (b) aligned proton-proton-neutron / proton-neutron-neutron. These indicate that in dense states of neutrons such as cores of neutron stars, or in Helium-3 / tritium nucleus, the repulsive forces are larger than the ones estimated from two-body forces only.

Holographic Nuclei : Supersymmetric Examples

We provide a dual gravity description of a supersymmetric heavy nucleus, following the idea of our previous paper arXiv:0809.3141. The supersymmetric nucleus consists of a merginal bound state of $A$ baryons distributed over a ball in 3 dimensions. In the gauge/string duality, the baryon in N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory corresponds to a D5-brane wrapping S^5 of the AdS_5 x S^5 spacetime, so the nucleus corresponds to a collection of $A$ D5-branes. We take a large $A$ and a near horizon limits of a back-reacted geometry generated by the wrapped $A$ D5-branes, where we find a gap in the supergravity fluctuation spectrum. This spectrum is a gravity dual of giant resonances of heavy nuclei, in the supersymmetric toy example of QCD.

N-Body Nuclear Forces at Short Distances in Holographic QCD

We provide a calculation of N-body (N>2) nucleon interactions at short distances in holographic QCD. In the Sakai-Sugimoto model of large N_c massless QCD, N baryons are described by N Yang-Mills instantons in 5 spacetime dimensions. We compute a classical short distance interaction hamiltonian for N 'tHooft instantons. This corresponds to N baryons sharing identical classical spins and isospins. We find that genuine N-body nuclear forces turn out to vanish for N>2, at the leading order. This suggests that classical N-body forces are always suppressed compared with 2-body forces.

Quark Mass Dependence of Hadron Spectrum in Holographic QCD

We compute a shift of baryon mass spectra due to quark masses in perturbation, in Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. We find the shift for the ground state nucleons to be δM = 4.1 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}], which is consistent with the current lattice QCD result. We predict the same value of the shift for N(1535) and Delta, while a larger value 7.7 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}] for Roper N(1440). We also present some evidences that the shifts of the vector meson masses are suppressed in the large 't Hooft coupling limit.

Towards a Holographic Model of Color-Flavor Locking Phase

We demonstrate a holographic realization of color-flavor locking phase, using N=4 SU(Nc) SYM coupled to N=2 Nf fundamental hypermultiplets as an example. The gravity dual consists of Nc D3-branes and Nf D7-branes with world volume gauge field representing the baryon density. Treating a small number \tilde{N}c << Nc of D3-branes as Yang-Mills instantons on the D7-branes, we consider possible potential(s) on their moduli space or equivalently the Higgs branch. We show that a non-trivial potential can be generated by including the backreaction of the baryonic density on the D7-branes, this dynamically drives the instantons (= D3-branes) into dissolution. We interpret this as a color-flavor locking since the size of the instanton is the squark vev, and study the symmetry breaking patterns. Extending to finite temperature setup, we demonstrate that color-flavor locking persists, and the thermal effect provides additional structures in the phase diagram.

Solitons in Supersymmety Breaking Meta-Stable Vacua

In recently found supersymmetry-breaking meta-stable vacua of the supersymmetric QCD, we examine possible exsitence of solitons. Homotopy groups of the moduli space of the meta-stable vacua show that there is no nontrivial soliton for SU(N_c) gauge group. When U(1)_B symmetry present in the theory is gauged, we find non-BPS solitonic (vortex) strings whose existence and properties are predicted from brane configurations. We obtain explicit classical solutions which reproduce the predicitions. For SO(N_c) gauge group, we find there are solitonic strings for N = N_f-N_c+4 = 2, and Z_2 strings for the other N. The strings are meta-stable as they live in the meta-stable vacua.

The Shape of Instantons : Cross-Section of Supertubes and Dyonic Instantons

We explore the correspondence between Yang-Mills instantons and algebraic curves. The curve is defined by Higgs zero locus of dyonic instantons in 1+4 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and it is identified in string theory with the cross-section of supertubes connecting parallel D4-branes. To present evidence for the identification, we show that with total charges fixed, the supertube angular momentum computed from the Higgs zero locus is maximized when the locus is circular, which has been proven for the cross-section of the supertubes. This leads to a consistent dictionary between the charges in two pictures. We also consider a T-dual version of the story, identifying the profiles of the wavy instanton strings with those of the supercurves/D-helices. Based on this observation, we then argue a novel correspondence between ADHM data of instantons and algebraic curves defining the locus. The degree of the curve is related to the instanton number, and splitting property of the curve is physically manifested by well-separated instantons.

Brane Decay and Death of Open Strings

We show how open strings cease to propagate when unstable D-branes decay. The information on the propagation is encoded in BSFT two-point functions for arbitrary profiles of open string excitations. We evaluate them in tachyon condensation backgrounds corresponding to (i) static spatial tachyon kink (= lower dimensional BPS D-brane) and (ii) homogeneous rolling tachyon. For (i) the propagation is restricted to the directions along the tachyon kink, while for (ii) all the open string excitations cease to propagate at late time and are subject to a collapsed light cone characterized by Carrollian contraction of Lorentz group.

Brane - Antibrane as a Defect of Tachyon Condensation

In a tachyon effective field theory of a non-BPS brane, we construct a classical solution representing a parallel brane-antibrane. The solution is made of a kink and an antikink placed at antipodal points of S^1. Estimation of the brane energy suggests an excitation of a string connecting the two branes, even though the theory is Abelian. We performed fluctuation analysis around the obtained solution, and find the structure of the supersymmetry breaking by the co-existence of the brane and the antibrane. We discuss possible processes of the pair-annihilation of the brane defect.

Dynamical Decay of Brane-Antibrane and Dielectric Brane

Using D-brane effective field theories, we study dynamical decay of unstable brane systems : (i) a parallel brane-antibrane pair with separation l and (ii) a dielectric brane. In particular we give explicitly the decay width of these unstable systems, and describe how the decay proceeds after the tunnel effect. The decay (i) is analysed by the use of a tachyon effective action on the Dp-Dpbar. A pair annihilation starts by nucleation of a bubble of a tachyon domain wall which represents a throat connecting these branes, and the tunneling decay width is found to be proportional to exp(-l^{p+1} T_{Dp}). We study also the decay leaving topological defects corresponding to lower-dimensional branes, which may be relevant for recent inflationary braneworld scenario. As for the decay (ii), first we observe that Dp-branes generically ``curl up'' in a nontrivial RR field strength. Using this viewpoint, we compute the decay width of the dielectric D2-branes by constructing relevant Euclidean bounce solutions in the shape of a funnel. We also give new solutions in doughnut shape which are involved with nucleation of dielectric branes from nothing.

Branes Ending On Branes In A Tachyon Model

In a tachyon model proposed by Minahan and Zwiebach and derived in the boundary string field theory, we construct various new solutions which correspond to nontrivial brane configurations in string theory. Our solutions include Dp-D(p-2) bound states, (F, Dp) bound states, string junctions, D(p-2)-branes ending on a Dp-brane, D(p-2)-branes suspended between parallel Dp-branes and their non-commutative generalizations. We find the Bogomol'nyi bounds and the BPS equations for some of our solutions, and check the physical consistency of our solutions with the D-brane picture by looking at the distributions of their energies and RR-charges in space. We also give conjectures for a few other brane configurations.

Fluxons and Exact BPS Solitons in Non-Commutative Gauge Theory

We show that the fluxon solution of the non-commutative gauge theory and its variations are obtained by the soliton generation method recently given by J. A. Harvey, P. Kraus and F. Larsen [hep-th/0010060]. Although this method generally produces non-BPS solutions of equations of motion, the solutions we obtained are BPS. We give the brane interpretation of these BPS solutions and study their counterparts in the ordinary description by the Seiberg-Witten map.

Monopoles and Dyons in Non-Commutative Geometry

Taking advantage of the equivalence between supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on non-commutative spaces and the field theory limit of D3-branes in the background of NSNS 2-form field, we investigate the static properties of magnetic monopoles and dyons using brane construction techniques. When parallel D3-branes are separated by turning on a Higgs vacuum expectation value, D-strings will stretch between them at an angle which depends on the value of the background 2-form potential. These states preserve half of the supersymmetries and have the same masses as their commutative counterparts in the field theory limit. We also find stable (p,q)-dyons and string junctions. We find that they do not preserve any supersymmetry but have the same masses as their commutative counterparts. In the field theory limit, the (p,q)-dyons and the string junctions restore 1/2 and 1/4 of the 16 supersymmetries, respectively.

3-String Junction and BPS Saturated Solutions in SU(3) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We construct BPS saturated regular configurations of N=4 SU(3) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory carrying non-parallel electric and magnetic charges. These field theory BPS states correspond to the string theory BPS states of 3-string junctions connecting three different D3-branes by regarding the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory as an effective field theory on parallel D3-branes.

Multi-Pronged Strings and BPS Saturated Solutions in SU(N) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

Extending our previous work on SU(3), we construct spherically symmetric BPS saturated regular configurations of N=4 SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory preserving 1/4 supersymmetry, and investigate their features. We also give exact solutions in the case some of the free parameters of the general solutions take certain values. These field theory BPS states correspond to the string theory BPS states of multi-pronged strings connecting N different D3-branes by regarding the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory as an effective field theory on parallel D3-branes. We compare our solutions with multi-pronged strings in string picture.

D-brane and Gauge Invariance in Closed String Field Theory

We construct a system of bosonic closed string field theory coupled to a D-brane. The interaction between the D-brane and closed string field is introduced using the boundary state which is a function of constant field strength $F_{μν}$ and the tilt $θ_μ^i$ of the D-brane. We find that the gauge invariance requirement on the system determines the $(F_{μν},θ_μ^i)$-dependence of the normalization factor of the boundary state as well as the form of the purely $(F_{μν},θ_μ^i)$ term of the action. Correspondence between the action in the present formalism and the low energy effective action (bulk + D-brane actions) in the $σ$-model approach is studied.
