New Estimation of the Curvature Effect for the X-ray Vacuum Diffraction Induced by an Intense Laser Field

Quantum electrodynamics predicts x-ray diffractions under a high-intensity laser field via virtual charged particles, and this phenomenon is called as vacuum diffraction (VD). In this paper, we derive a new formula to describe VD in a head-on collision geometry of an XFEL pulse and a laser pulse. A wavefront curvature of the XFEL pulse is newly considered in this formula. With this formula, we also discuss the curvature effect on VD signals based on realistic parameters at SACLA XFEL facility.

An experiment of X-ray photon-photon elastic scattering with a Laue-case beam collider

We report a search for photon-photon elastic scattering in vacuum in the X-ray region at an energy in the center of mass system of ω_{cms} =6.5 keV for which the QED cross section is σ_{QED} =2.5 \times 10^{-47} m^2. An X-ray beam provided by the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser is split and the two beamlets are made to collide at right angle, with a total integrated luminosity of (1.24 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{28} m^{-2}. No signal X rays from the elastic scattering that satisfy the correlation between energy and scattering angle were detected. We obtain a 95% C.L. upper limit for the scattering cross section of 1.9 \times 10^{-27} m^2 at ω_{cms}=6.5 keV. The upper limit is the lowest upper limit obtained so far by keV experiments.

Repeating Pulsed Magnet System for Axion-like Particle Searches and Vacuum Birefringence Experiments

We have developed a repeating pulsed magnet system which generates magnetic fields of about 10 T in a direction transverse to an incident beam over a length of 0.8 m with a repetition rate of 0.2 Hz. Its repetition rate is by two orders of magnitude higher than usual pulsed magnets. It is composed of four low resistance racetrack coils and a 30 kJ transportable capacitor bank as a power supply. The system aims at axion-like particle searches with a pulsed light source and vacuum birefringence measurements. We report on the details of the system and its performances.

Repolarization of Negative Muons by Polarized $^{209}$Bi Nuclei

A large $μ^-$ polarization was achieved in muonic Bi atoms with the help of the strong hyperfine field in a polarized nuclear target. Using $^{209}$Bi nuclei polarized to ($59\pm9$)% in ferromagnetic BiMn, we observed a $μ$-$e$ decay asymmetry of ($13.1\pm3.9$)%, which gives $μ^-$ polarization per nuclear polarization equal to $-1.07\pm 0.35$. This value is almost consistent with $-0.792$ calculated for nuclei with spin $I= \frac{9}{2}$ and a positive magnetic moment under the assumption that the hyperfine interaction becomes effective in the lowest muonic states.

Structure near $K^-$+$p$+$p$ threshold in the in-flight $^3$He$(K^-,Λp)n$ reaction

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $Λp$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,Λp)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $Λpn$ final state. The observed $Λp n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $Λp$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $χ^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $Γ_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5

2+1 flavor QCD simulation on a $96^4$ lattice

We generate $2+1$ flavor QCD configurations near the physical point on a $96^4$ lattice employing the 6-APE stout smeared Wilson clover action with a nonperturbative $c_{\rm SW}$ and the Iwasaki gauge action at $β=1.82$. The physical point is estimated based on the chiral perturbation theory using several data points generated by the reweighting technique from the simulation point, wherer $m_π$,$m_K$ and $m_Ω$ are used as physical inputs. The physics results include the quark masses, the hadron spectrum, the pseudoscalar meson decay constants and nucleon sigma terms, using the nonperturbative renormalization factors evaluated with the Schrodinger functional method.

Long-range order and spin-liquid states of polycrystalline Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$

Low-temperature states of polycrystalline samples of a frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been investigated by specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering experiments. We have found that this system can be tuned by a minute change of $x$ from a spin-liquid state ($x < x_{\text{c}}$) to a partly ordered state with a small antiferromagnetic ordering of the order of $0.1 μ_{\text{B}}$. Specific heat shows a sharp peak at a phase transition at $T_{\text{c}}= 0.5$ K for $x=0.005$. Magnetic excitation spectra for this sample change from a quasielastic to a gapped type through $T_{\text{c}}$. The possibility of a Jahn-Teller transition is discussed.

Mass and Axial current renormalization in the Schrödinger functional scheme for the RG-improved gauge and the stout smeared $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark actions

We present the quark mass and axial current renormalization factors for the RG-improved Iwasaki gauge action and three flavors of the stout smeared $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. We employ $α=0.1$ and $n_{\mathrm{step}}=6$ for the stout link smearing parameters and all links in the quark action are replaced with the smeared links. Using the Schrödinger functional scheme we evaluate the renormalization factors at $β=1.82$ where large scale simulations are being carried out.

Measurement of the strong interaction induced shift and width of the 1s state of kaonic deuterium at J-PARC

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV.

Anisotropic inplane spin correlation in the parent and Co-doped BaFe2As2: a neutron scattering study

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were investigated in the normal states of the parent ($x = 0$), under-doped ($x = 0.04$) and optimally-doped ($x = 0.06$) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals using inelastic neutron scattering technique. For all the doping levels, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations were observed as a broad peak localized at ${\it Q} = (1/2, 1/2, l)$. At lower energies, the peak shows an apparent anisotropy in the $hk0$ plane; longitudinal peak widths are considerably smaller than transverse widths. The anisotropy is larger for the higher doping level. These results are consistent with the random phase approximation (RPA) calculations taking account of the orbital character of the electronic bands, confirming that the anisotropic nature of the spin fluctuations in the normal states is mostly dominated by the nesting of Fermi surfaces. On the other hand, the quasi-two-dimensional spin correlations grow much rapidly for decreasing temperature in the $x = 0$ parent compound, compared to that expected for nearly antiferromagnetic metals. This may be another sign of the unconventional nature of the antiferromagnetic transition in BaFe$_2$As$_2$.

First Millimeter-wave Spectroscopy of the Ground-state Positronium

We report on the first measurement of the Breit-Wigner resonance of the transition from {\it ortho-}positronium to {\it para-}positronium. We have developed an optical system to accumulate a power of over 20 kW using a frequency-tunable gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity. This system opens a new era of millimeter-wave spectroscopy, and enables us to directly determine both the hyperfine interval and the decay width of {\it p-}Ps.

Direct Observation of the Hyperfine Transition of the Ground State Positronium

We report the first direct measurement of the hyperfine transition of the ground state positronium. The hyperfine structure between ortho-positronium and para-positronium is about 203 GHz. We develop a new optical system to accumulate about 10 kW power using a gyrotron, a mode converter, and a Fabry-Pérot cavity. The hyperfine transition has been observed with a significance of 5.4 standard deviations. The transition probability is measured to be $A = 3.1^{+1.6}_{-1.2} \times 10^{-8}$ s$^{-1}$ for the first time, which is in good agreement with the theoretical value of $3.37 \times 10^{-8}$ s$^{-1}$.

Formation of the $S=-1$ resonance X(2265) in the reaction $pp -> X + K^+$ at 2.50 and 2.85 GeV

Analyzing DISTO data of $pp -> p Lambda K^+$ at $T_p = 2.50$ and 2.85 GeV to populate a previously reported X(2265) resonance with $M_X = 2267$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Gamma_X = 118$ MeV at 2.85 GeV, we found that the production of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is much less than that at 2.85 GeV (less than 10%), though it is expected from a kinematical consideration to be produced as much as 33% of that at 2.85 GeV. The small population of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is consistent with the very weak production of Lambda (1405) at the same incident energy toward its production threshold, thus indicating that Lambda (1405) plays an important role as a doorway state for the formation of X(2265).

Ultrafast Time-Resolved Faraday Rotation in EuO Thin Films

We have investigated the ultrafast spin dynamics in EuO thin films by time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy. The photoinduced magnetization is found to be increased in a transient manner, accompanied with subsequent demagnetization. The dynamical magnetization enhancement showed a maximum slightly below the Curie temperature with prolonged tails toward both lower and higher temperatures and dominates the demagnetization counterpart at 55 K. The magnetization enhancement component decays in ~1 ns. The realization of the transient collective ordering is attributable to the enhancement of the f-d exchange interaction.

$ρ$ Meson Decay in 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We perform a lattice QCD study of the $ρ$ meson decay from the $N_f=2+1$ full QCD configurations generated with a renormalization group improved gauge action and a non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermion action. The resonance parameters, the effective $ρ\toππ$ coupling constant and the resonance mass, are estimated from the $P$-wave scattering phase shift for the isospin I=1 two-pion system. The finite size formulas are employed to calculate the phase shift from the energy on the lattice. Our calculations are carried out at two quark masses, $m_π=410\,{\rm MeV}$ ($m_π/m_ρ=0.46$) and $m_π=300\,{\rm MeV}$ ($m_π/m_ρ=0.35$), on a $32^3\times 64$ ($La=2.9\,{\rm fm}$) lattice at the lattice spacing $a=0.091\,{\rm fm}$. We compare our results at these two quark masses with those given in the previous works using $N_f=2$ full QCD configurations and the experiment.

First direct measurement of positronium hyperfine splitting with sub-THz light

Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. The hyperfine splitting of positronium (Ps-HFS, about 203 GHz) is an important observable but all previous measurements of Ps-HFS had been measured indirectly using Zeeman splitting. There might be the unknown systematic errors on the uniformity of magnetic field. We are trying to measure Ps-HFS directly using sub-THz radiation. We developed an optical system to accumulate high power (about 10 kW) radiation in a Fabry-Pérot resonant cavity and observed the positronium hyperfine transition for the first time.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin Dynamics in $d$-Electron Heavy-Fermion Metal Y$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$Mn$_2$

Slow spin fluctuations ($ν< 10^{12}$ s$^-1$) observed by the muon spin relaxation technique in Y$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$Mn$_2$ exhibits a power law dependence on temperature ($ν\propto T^α$), where the power converges asymptotically to unity ($α\rightarrow 1$) as the system moves away from spin-glass instability with increasing Sc content $x$. This linear $T$ dependence, which is common to that observed in LiV$_2$O$_4$, is in line with the prediction of the "intersecting Hubbard chains" model for a metallic pyrochlore lattice, suggesting that the geometrical constraints to t2g bands specific to the pyrochlore structure serve as a basis of the $d$-electron heavy-fermion state.

Resonant formation of Lambda(1405) by stopped-K- absorption in deuteron

To solve the current debate on the position of the quasi-bound K^-p state, namely, "Lambda(1405) or Lambda*(1420)", we propose to measure the T_{21} = T_{Sigma-pi \leftarrow Kbar-N} Sigma-pi invariant-mass spectrum in stopped-K- absorption in deuteron, since the spectrum, reflecting the soft and hard deuteron momentum distribution, is expected to have a narrow quasi-free component with an upper edge of M = 1430 MeV/c^2, followed by a significant "high-momentum" tail toward the lower mass region, where a resonant formation of Lambda(1405) of any mass and width in a wide range is revealed. We introduce a "deviation" spectrum as defined by DEV = OBS (observed or calculated) / QF (non-resonant quasi-free), in which the resonant component can be seen as an isolated peak free from the QF shape.

Calculation of $ρ$ meson decay width from the PACS-CS configurations

We present preliminary results on the $ρ$ meson decay width from $N_f=2+1$ full QCD configurations generated by PACS-CS Collaboration. The decay width is estimated from the $P$-wave scattering phase shift for the isospin $I=1$ two-pion system. The finite size formula presented by Lüscher in the center of mass frame and its extension to non-zero total momentum frame by Rummukainen and Gottlieb are employed for the calculations of the phase shift. Our calculations are carried out at $m_π=410\ {\rm MeV}$ ($m_π/m_ρ=0.46$) and $a=0.091\ {\rm fm}$ on a $32^3\times 64$ ($La=2.9 {\rm fm}$) lattice.

Calculation of Helium nuclei in quenched lattice QCD

We present results for the binding energies for ^4He and ^3He nuclei calculated in quenched lattice QCD at the lattice spacing of a =0.128 fm with a heavy quark mass corresponding to m_pi = 0.8 GeV. Enormous computational cost for the nucleus correlation functions is reduced by avoiding redundancy of equivalent contractions stemming from permutation symmetry of protons or neutrons in the nucleus and various other symmetries. To distinguish a bound state from an attractive scattering state, we investigate the volume dependence of the energy difference between the ground state energy of the nucleus channel and the free multi-nucleon states by changing the spatial extent of the lattice from 3.1 fm to 12.3 fm. A finite energy difference left in the infinite spatial volume limit leads to the conclusion that the measured ground states are bounded. It is also encouraging that the measured binding energies and the experimental ones show the same order of magnitude.

Existence of a phase transition under finite magnetic field in the long-range RKKY Ising spin glass Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

A phase transition of a model compound of the long-range Ising spin glass (SG) Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where spins interact via the RKKY interaction, has been investigated. The static and the dynamic scaling analyses reveal that the SG phase transition in the model magnet belongs to the mean-field universality class. Moreover, the characteristic relaxation time in finite magnetic fields exhibits a critical divergent behavior as well as in zero field, indicating a stability of the SG phase in finite fields. The presence of the SG phase transition in field in the model magnet strongly syggests that the replica symmetry is broken in the long-range Ising SG.

Physical Point Simulation in 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We present the results of the physical point simulation in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with the nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action and the Iwasaki gauge action at $β=1.9$ on a $32^3 \times 64$ lattice. The physical quark masses together with the lattice spacing is determined with $m_π$, $m_K$ and $m_Ω$ as physical inputs. There are two key algorithmic ingredients to make possible the direct simulation at the physical point: One is the mass-preconditioned domain-decomposed HMC algorithm to reduce the computational cost. The other is the reweighting technique to adjust the hopping parameters exactly to the physical point. The physics results include the hadron spectrum, the quark masses and the pseudoscalar meson decay constants. The renormalization factors are nonperturbatively evaluated with the Schr{ö}dinger functional method. The results are compared with the previous ones obtained by the chiral extrapolation method.

Precise measurement of Hyper Fine Structure of positronium using sub-THz light

Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the QED, especially for the QED in bound state. The discrepancy of 3.9σis found recently between the measured HFS values and the QED prediction ($O(α^3)$). It might be due to the contribution of the unknown new physics or the systematic problems in the previous all measurements. We propose new method to measure HFS precisely and directly. A gyrotron, a novel sub-THz light source is used with a high-finesse Fabry-Pérot cavity to obtain enough radiation power at 203 GHz. The present status of the optimization studies and current design of the experiment are described.

Search for CP-violation in Positronium Decay

CP-violation in the quark sector has been well established over the last decade, but has not been observed in the lepton sector. We search for CP-violating decay processes in positronium, using the angular correlation of (\vec{S}\cdot\vec{k_{1}})(\vec{S}\cdot\vec{k_{1}}\times\vec{k_{2}}), where \vec{S} is the the positronium spin and \vec{k_{1}}, \vec{k_{2}} are the directions of the positronium decay photons. To a sensitivity of 2.2\times10^{-3}, no CP-violation has been found, which is at the level of the CP-violation amplitude in the K meson. A 90% confidence interval of the CP-violation parameter (C_{CP}) was determined to be -0.0023 < C_{CP} < 0.0049. This result is a factor 7 more strict than that of the previous experiment.

Three- and four-nucleon absorption processes observed in the $K^-$-$^4$He reaction at rest

Correlations of back-to-back coincident $Λd$ and $Λt$ pairs from the stopped $K^-$ reaction on $^4$He had been investigated, thereby $Λd$ and $Λt$ branches of non-mesonic three- and four-nucleon absorption processes of antikaon at rest were identified as well-separable processes, respectively. The branching ratio of the three-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λd "n"$, is estimated to be $(0.9 \pm 0.1 (stat) \pm 0.2 (syst)) \times 10^{-3}$ from the normalized $Λd$ spectrum in a $Λd n$ final state, while the fraction of the four-nucleon process, ($^4$He-$K^-$)$_{atomic} \rightarrow Λt$, is obtained to be $(3.1 \pm 0.4 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst)) \times 10^{-4}$ per stopped $K^-$.

2+1 flavor domain wall QCD on a (2 fm)^3 lattice: light meson spectroscopy with Ls = 16

We present results for light meson masses and pseudoscalar decay constants from the first of a series of lattice calculations with 2+1 dynamical flavors of domain wall fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action. The work reported here was done at a fixed lattice spacing of about 0.12 fm on a 16^3\times32 lattice, which amounts to a spatial volume of (2 fm)^3 in physical units. The number of sites in the fifth dimension is 16, which gives m_{res} = 0.00308(4) in these simulations. Three values of input light sea quark masses, m_l^{sea} \approx 0.85 m_s, 0.59 m_s and 0.33 m_s were used to allow for extrapolations to the physical light quark limit, whilst the heavier sea quark mass was fixed to approximately the physical strange quark mass m_s. The exact rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm was used to evaluate the fractional powers of the fermion determinants in the ensemble generation. We have found that f_π= 127(4) MeV, f_K = 157(5) MeV and f_K/f_π= 1.24(2), where the errors are statistical only, which are in good agreement with the experimental values.

I=2 Pion Scattering Length from Two-Pion Wave Functions

We calculate the two-pion wave function in the ground state of the I=2 $S$-wave system and find the interaction range between two pions, which allows us to examine the validity of the necessary condition for the finite-volume method for the scattering length proposed by Lüscher. We work in the quenched approximation employing a renormalization group improved gauge action for gluons and an improved Wilson action for quarks at $1/a=1.207(12) {\rm GeV}$ on $16^3 \times 80$, $20^3 \times 80$ and $24^3 \times 80$ lattices. We conclude that the necessary condition is satisfied within the statistical errors for the lattice sizes $L\ge 24$ ($3.92 {\rm fm}$) when the quark mass is in the range that corresponds to $m_π^2 = 0.273-0.736 {\rm GeV}^2$. We obtain the scattering length with a smaller statistical error from the wave function than from the two-pion time correlator.

I=2 $ππ$ Scattering Phase Shift with two Flavors of $O(a)$ Improved Dynamical Quarks

We present a lattice QCD calculation of phase shift including the chiral and continuum extrapolations in two-flavor QCD. The calculation is carried out for I=2 S-wave $ππ$ scattering. The phase shift is evaluated for two momentum systems, the center of mass and laboratory systems, by using the finite volume method proposed by Lüscher in the center of mass system and its extension to general systems by Rummukainen and Gottlieb. The measurements are made at three different bare couplings $β= 1.80$, 1.95 and 2.10 using a renormalization group improved gauge and a tadpole improved clover fermion action, and employing a set of configurations generated for hadron spectroscopy in our previous work. The illustrative values we obtain for the phase shift in the continuum limit are $δ$(deg.) $= - 3.50(64)$, $ - 9.5(30)$ and $ - 16.9(64)$ for $\sqrt{s}({\rm GeV})$ $=0.4$, $ 0.6$ and $ 0.8$, which are consistent with experiment.

I=2 Pion Scattering Length from Two-Pion Wave Function

We present a report on a calculation of scattering length for I=2 $S$-wave two-pion system from two-pion wave function. Calculations are made with an RG-improved action for gluons and improved Wilson action for quarks at $a^{-1}=1.207(12) {\rm GeV}$ on $16^3 \times 80$, $20^3 \times 80$ and $24^3 \times 80$ lattices. We investigate the validity of necessary condition for application of Lüscher's formula through the wave function. We find that the condition is satisfied for lattice volumes $L\ge 3.92 {\rm fm}$ for the quark mass range $m_π^2 = 0.273-0.736 {\rm GeV}^2$. We also find that the scattering length can be extracted with a smaller statistical error from the wave function than with a time correlation function used in previous studies.

Hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium revealed by a laser-microwave-laser resonance method

Using a newly developed laser-microwave-laser resonance method, we observed a pair of microwave transitions between hyperfine levels of the $(n,L)=(37,35)$ state of antiprotonic helium. This experiment confirms the quadruplet hyperfine structure due to the interaction of the antiproton orbital angular momentum, the electron spin and the antiproton spin as predicted by Bakalov and Korobov. The measured frequencies of $ν_{\text HF}^+ =12.89596 \pm 0.00034$ GHz and $ν_{\text HF}^- =12.92467 \pm 0.00029$ GHz agree with recent theoretical calculations on a level of $ 6 \times10^{-5}$.

Maximum entropy analysis of hadron spectral functions and excited states in quenched lattice QCD

Employing the maximum entropy method we extract the spectral functions from meson correlators at four lattice spacings in quenched QCD with the Wilson quark action. We confirm that the masses and decay constants, obtained from the position and the area of peaks, agree well with the results from the conventional exponential fit. For the first excited state, we obtain $m_{π_1} = 660(590)$ MeV, $m_{ρ_1} = 1540(570)$ MeV, and $f_{ρ_1} = 0.085(36)$ in the continuum limit.

Spectral function and excited states in lattice QCD with maximum entropy method

We apply the maximum entropy method to extract the spectral functions for pseudoscalar and vector mesons from hadron correlators previously calculated at four different lattice spacings in quenched QCD with the Wilson quark action. We determine masses and decay constants for the ground and excited states of the pseudoscalar and vector channels from position and area of peaks in the spectral functions. We obtain the results, $m_{π_1} = 660(590)$ MeV and $m_{ρ_1} = 1540(570)$ MeV for the masses of the first excited state masses, in the continuum limit of quenched QCD. We also find unphysical states which have infinite mass in the continuum limit, and argue that they are bound states of two doublers of the Wilson quark action. If the interpretation is correct, this is the first time that the state of doublers is identified in lattice QCD numerical simulations.
