Magnetoelectric coupling in a frustrated spinel studied using high-field scanning probe microscopy

Below its Néel temperature, the frustrated magnet CdCr$_2$O$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic spin-spiral ground state. Such states can give rise to a sizable magnetoelectric coupling. In this report, we measure the electric polarization induced in single-crystalline CdCr$_2$O$_4$ by a large applied magnetic field. Because the detection of a macroscopic polarization is hindered by the structural domains in the tetragonal spin-spiral phase, we have pioneered an alternative method of measuring polarization induced by high magnetic fields, using electrostatic force microscopy. This method enables us to measure polarization from nanometer sized areas of the sample surface, as well as imaging how to charge inhomogeneities change with magnetic field.

Strong magnetoelastic coupling at the transition from harmonic to anharmonic order in NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ with 3d$^5$ configuration

The crystal structure of the double tungstate NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ arises from that of the spin-driven multiferroic MnWO$_4$ by inserting non-magnetic Na layers. NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a three-dimensional incommensurate spin-spiral structure at low temperature and zero magnetic field, which, however, competes with commensurate order induced by magnetic field. The incommensurate zero-field phase corresponds to the condensation of a single irreducible representation but it does not imply ferroelectric polarization because spirals with opposite chirality coexist. Sizable anharmonic modulations emerge in this incommensurate structure, which are accompanied by large magneto-elastic anomalies, while the onset of the harmonic order is invisible in the thermal expansion coefficient. In magnetic fields applied along the monoclinic axis, we observe a first-order transition to a commensurate structure that again is accompanied by large magneto-elastic effects. The large magnetoelastic coupling, a reduction of the $b$ lattice parameter, is thus associated only with the commensurate order. Upon releasing the field at low temperature, the magnetic order transforms to another commensurate structure that considerably differs from the incommensurate low-temperature phase emerging upon zero-field cooling. The latter phase, which exhibits a reduced ordered moment, seems to be metastable.

Spin-orbital excitation continuum and anomalous electron-phonon interaction in the Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$

Raman scattering experiments on stoichiometric, Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ over a wide range of excitation energies reveal a broad electronic continuum which is featureless in the paramagnetic state, but develops a gap of $\sim 800$ cm$^{-1}$ upon cooling below the Néel temperature $T_N = 146$ K. In the antiferromagnetic state, the spectral weight below the gap is transferred to well-defined spectral features due to spin and orbital excitations. Low-energy phonons exhibit pronounced Fano anomalies indicative of strong interaction with the electron system for $T > T_N$, but become sharp and symmetric for $T < T_N$. The electronic continuum and the marked renormalization of the phonon lifetime by the onset of magnetic order are highly unusual for Mott insulators and indicate liquid-like correlations between spins and orbitals.

Anisotropy study of multiferroicity in the pyroxene NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$

We present a study of the anisotropy of the dielectric, magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of the multiferroic clinopyroxene NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. Pyroelectric currents, dielectric constants and magnetic susceptibilities as well as the thermal expansion and the magnetostriction were examined on large synthetic single crystals of NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. The spontaneous electric polarization detected below $T_{\rm C}\simeq 11.6$ K in an antiferromagnetically ordered state ($T_{\rm N}\simeq 13$ K) is mainly lying within the $ac$ plane with a small component along $b$, indicating a triclinic symmetry of the multiferroic phase of NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. The electric polarization can be strongly modified by applying magnetic fields along different directions. We derive detailed magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams and identify three multiferroic low-temperature phases, which are separated by a non-ferroelectric, antiferromagnetically ordered state from the paramagnetic high-temperature phase.

Heat transport of the spin-ice materials Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The elementary excitations of the spin-ice materials Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in zero field can be described as independent magnetic monopoles. We investigate the influence of these exotic excitations on the heat transport by measuring the magnetic-field dependent thermal conductivity $κ$. Additional measurements on the highly dilute reference compounds HoYTi$_2$O$_7$ and DyYTi$_2$O$_7$ enable us to separate $κ$ into a sum of phononic ($κ_{ph}$) and magnetic ($κ_{mag}$) contributions. For both spin-ice materials, we derive significant zero-field contributions $κ_{mag}$, which are rapidly suppressed in finite magnetic fields. Moreover, $κ_{mag}$ sensitively depends on the scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations, which is rather different for the Ho- and the Dy-based materials and, as a further consequence, the respective magnetic-field dependent changes $κ_{ph}(B)$ are even of opposite signs.

Low-temperature ordered phases of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain system Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$

In this study the magnetic order of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain system Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$ in a temperature range from 50 mK to 0.5 K and in applied magnetic fields up to 3.5 T is investigated by high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the specific heat. Applying magnetic fields along a or c suppresses $T_\textrm{N}$ completely at about 2.1 T. In addition, we find an adjacent intermediate phase before the magnetization saturates close to 2.5 T. For magnetic fields applied along b, a surprisingly rich phase diagram arises. Two additional transitions are observed at critical fields $μ_0 H_{SF1}\simeq 0.25$ T and $μ_0 H_{SF2}\simeq 0.7$ T, which we propose to arise from a two-stage spin-flop transition.

Magnetoelectric properties of $A_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)] with $A = $ K, Rb, Cs

The compounds $A_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)] with $A=$ K, Rb, Cs are identified as new linear magnetoelectric materials. We present a detailed investigation of their linear magnetoelectric properties by measurements of pyroelectric currents, dielectric constants and magnetization. The anisotropy of the linear magnetoelectric effect of the K-based and Rb-based compound is consistent with the magnetic point group $m'm'm'$, already reported in literature. A symmetry analysis of the magnetoelectric effect of the Cs-based compound allows to determine the magnetic point group $mmm'$ and to develop a model for its magnetic structure. In addition, magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams are derived and compared to the closely related multiferroic (NH$_4$)$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)].

Substitution effects on the temperature vs. magnetic-field phase diagrams of the quasi-1D effective Ising spin-1/2 chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ is a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain system with pronounced Ising anisotropy of the magnetic exchange. Due to finite interchain interactions long-range antiferromagnetic order develops below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 5.5$ K, which is accompanied by a structural distortion in order to lift magnetic frustration effects. The corresponding temperature $vs. $ magnetic-field phase diagram is highly anisotropic with respect to the magnetic-field direction and various details are still under vivid discussion. Here, we report the influence of several substitutions on the magnetic properties and the phase diagrams of BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. We investigate the substitution series Ba$_{\text{1-x}}$Sr$_{\text{x}}$Co$_{\text{2}}$V$_{\text{2}}$O$_{\text{8}}$ over the full range $0\le x \le 1$ as well as the influence of a partial substitution of the magnetic Co$^{2+}$ by small amounts of other magnetic transition metals or by non-magnetic magnesium. In all cases, the phase diagrams were obtained on single crystals from magnetization data and/or high-resolution studies of the thermal expansion and magnetostriction.

Anisotropic Monopole Heat Transport in the Spin-Ice Compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report a study of the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the spin-ice material Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. From the anisotropic magnetic-field dependence of κ$ and by additional measurements on the phononic reference compounds Y$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and DyYTi$_2$O$_7$, we are able to separate the phononic and the magnetic contributions to the total heat transport, i.e. $κ_{ph}$ and $κ_{mag}$, respectively, which both depend on the magnetic field. The field dependent $κ_{ph}$ arises from lattice distortions due to magnetic-field induced torques on the non-collinear magnetic moments of the Dy ions. For $κ_{mag}$, we observe a highly anisotropic magnetic-field dependence, which correlates with the corresponding magnetization data reflecting the different magnetic-field induced spin-ice ground states. The magnitude of $κ_{mag}$ increases with the degree of the ground-state degeneracy. This anisotropic field dependence as well as various hysteresis effects suggest that $κ_{mag}$ is essentially determined by the mobility of the magnetic monopole excitations in spin ice.

Magnetic phase diagrams, domain switching and a quantum phase transition of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8

In the effective Ising spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8, the magnetic-field influence is highly anisotropic. For magnetic fields along the easy axis $c$, the Néel order is strongly suppressed already for low fields and an incommensurate order is entered above 4 T. We present a detailed study of the magnetic phase diagrams for different magnetic field directions, which are derived from magnetization data, high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements as well as from the thermal conductivity. Zero-field thermal expansion data reveal that the magnetic transition is accompanied by an orthorhombic distortion within the $ab$ plane. Under ambient conditions the crystals are heavily twinned, but the domain orientation can be influenced either by applying uniaxial pressure or a magnetic field along the [100] direction. In addition, our data reveal a pronounced in-plane magnetic anisotropy for fields applied within the $ab$ plane. For $H || [110]$, the magnetic field influence on T$_N$ is weak, whereas for magnetic fields applied along [100], T$_N$ vanishes at about 10 T and the zero-field Néel order is completely suppressed as is confirmed by neutron diffraction data. The second-order phase transition strongly suggests a quantum critical point being present at $H\simeq 10$ T parallel [100], where the Néel order probably changes to a spin-liquid state.

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain system Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$ in a transverse magnetic field

Comparing high-resolution specific heat and thermal expansion measurements to exact finite-size diagonalization, we demonstrate that Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$ for a magnetic field along the crystallographic b axis realizes the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain in a transverse field. Exploiting both thermal as well as virtual excitations of higher crystal field states, we find that the spin chain is in the XY-limit with an anisotropy $J_z/J_\perp \approx 0.12$ substantially smaller than previously believed. A spin-flop Ising quantum phase transition occurs at a critical field of $μ_0 H_b^{\rm cr} \approx 2$ T before around 3.5 T the description in terms of an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain becomes inapplicable.

Thermodynamic properties of the new multiferroic material (NH$_4$)$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)]

(NH$_4$)$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)], a member of the family of antiferromagnetic $A_2$[Fe$X_5$(H$_2$O)] compounds ($X$ = halide ion, $A$ = alkali metal or ammonium ion) is classified as a new multiferroic material. We report the onset of ferroelectricity below ~6.9 K within an antiferromagnetically ordered state ($T_N \sim 7.25 K$). The corresponding electric polarization can drastically be influenced by applying magnetic fields. Based on measurements of pyroelectric currents, dielectric constants and magnetization we characterize the magnetoelectric, dielectric and magnetic properties of (NH$_4$)$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)]. Combining these data with measurements of thermal expansion, magnetostriction and specific heat, we derive detailed magnetic field versus temperature phase diagrams. Depending on the direction of the magnetic field up to three different multiferroic phases are identified, which are separated by a magnetically ordered, but non-ferroelectric phase from the paramagnetic phase. Besides these low-temperature transitions, we observe an additional phase transition at ~79 K, which we suspect to be of structural origin.

Evidence for a temperature-induced spin-state transition of Co3+ in La2-xSrxCoO4

We study the magnetic susceptibility of mixed-valent La2-xSrxCoO4 single crystals in the doping range of 0.5<= x <= 0.8 for temperatures up to 1000 K. The magnetism below room temperature is described by paramagnetic Co2+ in the high-spin state and by Co3+ in the non-magnetic low-spin state. Above room temperature, an increase in susceptibility compared to the behavior expected from Co2+ is seen, which we attribute to a spin-state transition of Co3+. The susceptibility is analyzed by comparison to full-multiplet calculations for the thermal population of the high- and intermediate-spin states of Co3+.

Thermal Conductivity and Specific Heat of the Spin-Ice Compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$: Experimental Evidence for Monopole Heat Transport

Elementary excitations in the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be described as magnetic monopoles propagating independently within the pyrochlore lattice formed by magnetic Dy ions. We studied the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity κ(B) for B || [001] and observe clear evidence for magnetic heat transport originating from the monopole excitations. The magnetic contribution κ_{mag} is strongly field-dependent and correlates with the magnetization M(B). The diffusion coefficient obtained from the ratio of κ_{mag} and the magnetic specific heat is strongly enhanced below 1 K indicating a high mobility of the monopole excitations in the spin-ice state.

Evidence for charge and orbital order in the doped titanates RE_(1-x)Ca_xTiO_3 (RE=Y, Er, Lu)

Combining macroscopic and diffraction methods we have studied the electric, magnetic and struc- tural properties of RE_(1-x)Ca_xTiO_3 (RE=Y, Er, Lu) focusing on the concentration range near the metal-insulator transition. The insulating phase, which is stabilized by a smaller rare-earth ionic ra- dius, exhibits charge order with a predominant occupation of the dxy orbital. The charge and orbital ordering explains the broad stability range of the insulating state in RE_(1-x)Ca_xTiO_3 with smaller rare-earth ions. The strong modulation of the Ti-O bond distances indicates sizeable modulation of the electric charge.

Measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties of EuC$_2$: a low-temperature analogue of EuO

EuC$_2$ is a ferromagnet with a Curie-temperature of $T_C \simeq 15\,$K. It is semiconducting with the particularity that the resistivity drops by about 5 orders of magnitude on cooling through $T_C$, which is therefore called a metal-insulator transition. In this paper we study the magnetization, specific heat, thermal expansion, and the resistivity around this ferromagnetic transition on high-quality EuC$_2$ samples. At $T_C$ we observe well defined anomalies in the specific heat $c_p(T)$ and thermal expansion $α(T)$ data. The magnetic contributions of $c_p(T)$ and $α(T)$ can satisfactorily be described within a mean-field theory, taking into account the magnetization data. In zero magnetic field the magnetic contributions of the specific heat and thermal expansion fulfill a Grüneisen-scaling, which is not preserved in finite fields. From an estimation of the pressure dependence of $T_C$ via Ehrenfest's relation, we expect a considerable increase of $T_C$ under applied pressure due to a strong spin-lattice coupling. Furthermore the influence of weak off stoichiometries $δ$ in EuC$_{2 \pm δ}$ was studied. It is found that $δ$ strongly affects the resistivity, but hardly changes the transition temperature. In all these aspects, the behavior of EuC$_2$ strongly resembles that of EuO.

Resistivity and Hall effect of LiFeAs: Evidence for electron-electron scattering

LiFeAs is unique among the broad family of FeAs-based superconductors, because it is superconducting with a rather large $T_c\simeq 18$ K under ambient conditions although it is a stoichiometric compound. We studied the electrical transport on a high-quality single crystal. The resistivity shows quadratic temperature dependence at low temperature giving evidence for strong electron-electron scattering and a tendency towards saturation around room temperature. The Hall constant is negative and changes with temperature, what most probably arises from a van Hove singularity close to the Fermi energy in one of the hole-like bands. Using band structure calculations based on angular resolved photoemission spectra we are able to reproduce all the basic features of both the resistivity as well as the Hall effect data.

CdV2O4: A rare example of a collinear multiferroic spinel

By studying the dielectric properties of the geometrically frustrated spinel CdV2O4, we observe ferroelectricity developing at the transition into the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state. In this multiferroic spinel, ferroelectricity is driven by local magnetostriction and not by the more common scenario of spiral magnetism. The experimental findings are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electric polarization and the underlying spin and orbital order. The results point towards a charge rearrangement due to dimerization, where electronic correlations and the proximity to the insulator-metal transition play an important role.

Magnetostrictive Neel ordering of the spin-5/2 ladder compound BaMn2O3: distortion-induced lifting of geometrical frustration

The crystal structure and the magnetism of BaMn$_2$O$_3$ have been studied by thermodynamic and by diffraction techniques using large single crystals and powders. BaMn$_2$O$_3$ is a realization of a $S = 5/2$ spin ladder as the magnetic interaction is dominant along 180$^\circ$ Mn-O-Mn bonds forming the legs and the rungs of a ladder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility exhibits well-defined maxima for all directions proving the low-dimensional magnetic character in BaMn$_2$O$_3$. The susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction data, however, show that BaMn$_2$O$_3$ exhibits a transition to antiferromagnetic order at 184 K, in spite of a full frustration of the nearest-neighbor inter-ladder coupling in the orthorhombic high-temperature phase. This frustration is lifted by a remarkably strong monoclinic distortion which accompanies the magnetic transition.

Phase diagram and isotope effect in (PrEu)_0.7Ca_0.3CoO_3 cobaltites exhibiting spin-state transitions

We present the study of magnetization, thermal expansion, specific heat, resistivity, and a.c. susceptibility of (Pr$_{1-y}$Eu$_y$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ cobaltites. The measurements were performed on ceramic samples with $y = 0.12 - 0.26$ and $y = 1$. Based on these results, we construct the phase diagram, including magnetic and spin-state transitions. The transition from the low- to intermediate-spin state is observed for the samples with $y > 0.18$, whereas for a lower Eu-doping level, there are no spin-state transitions, but a crossover between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states occurs. The effect of oxygen isotope substitution along with Eu doping on the magnetic/spin state is discussed. The oxygen-isotope substitution ($^{16}$O by $^{18}$O) is found to shift both the magnetic and spin-state phase boundaries to lower Eu concentrations. The isotope effect on the spin-state transition temperature ($y > 0.18$) is rather strong, but it is much weaker for the transition to a ferromagnetic state ($y < 0.18$). The ferromagnetic ordering in the low-Eu doped samples is shown to be promoted by the Co$^{4+}$ ions, which favor the formation of the intermediate-spin state of neighboring Co$^{3+}$ ions.

Superconductivity in SnO: a Nonmagnetic Analog to Fe-based Superconductors?

We found that under pressure SnO with alpha-PbO structure, the same structure as in many Fe-based superconductors, e.g. beta-FeSe, undergoes a transition to a superconducting state for p > 6 GPa with a maximum Tc of 1.4 K at p = 9.3 GPa. The pressure dependence of Tc reveals a dome-like shape and superconductivity disappears for p > 16 GPa. It is further shown from band structure calculations that SnO under pressure exhibits a Fermi surface topology similar to that reported for some Fe-based superconductors and that the nesting between the hole and electron pockets correlates with the change of Tc as a function of pressure.

Magnetic and structural transitions in La$_{1-x}A_{1-x}$CoO$_{3}$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, and Ba)

We report thermal-expansion, lattice-constant, and specific-heat data of the series La_1-xA_xCoO_3 for 0<= x <= 0.30 with A = Ca, Sr, and Ba. For the undoped compound LaCoO_3 the thermal-expansion coefficient alpha(T) exhibits a pronounced maximum around T=50K caused by a temperature-driven spin-state transition from a low-spin state of the Co^{3+$ ions at low towards a higher spin state at higher temperatures. The partial substitution of the La^{3+} ions by divalent Ca^{2+}, Sr^{2+}, or Ba^{2+} ions causes drastic changes in the macroscopic properties of LaCoO3. The large maximum in alpha(T) is suppressed and completely vanishes for x> 0.12. For A = Ca three different anomalies develop in alpha(T) with further increasing x, which are visible in specific-heat data as well. Together with temperature-dependent x-ray data we identify several phase transitions as a function of the doping concentration x and temperature. From these data we propose an extended phase diagram for La_1-xCa_xCoO_3.

Momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating titanates

High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been used to determine the momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$ over a wide range of the Brillouin zone. The data are compared to calculations in the framework of lattice-driven and superexchange-driven orbital ordering models. A superexchange model in which the experimentally observed modes are attributed to two-orbiton excitations yields the best description of the data.

Spinon localization in the heat transport of the spin-1/2 ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$

We present experiments on the magnetic field-dependent thermal transport in the spin-1/2 ladder system (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$. The thermal conductivity $κ(B)$ is only weakly affected by the field-induced transitions between the gapless Luttinger-liquid state realized for $B_{c1}< B < B_{c2}$ and the gapped states, suggesting the absence of a direct contribution of the spin excitations to the heat transport. We observe, however, that the thermal conductivity is strongly suppressed by the magnetic field deeply within the Luttinger-liquid state. These surprising observations are discussed in terms of localization of spinons within finite ladder segments and spinon-phonon umklapp scattering of the predominantly phononic heat transport.

Thermal expansion of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-chain compound Cu(C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$)(NO$_3$)$_2$

Compounds containing magnetic subsystems representing simple model spin systems with weak magnetic coupling constants are ideal candidates to test theoretical predictions for the generic behavior close to quantum phase transitions. We present measurements of the thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the spin-1/2-chain compound copper pyrazine dinitrate Cu(C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$)(NO$_3$)$_2$. Of particular interest is the low-temperature thermal expansion close to the saturation field $H_c \simeq 13.9 \mathrm{T}$, which defines a quantum phase transition from the gapless Luttinger liquid state to the fully saturated state with a finite excitation gap. We observe a sign change of the thermal expansion for the different ground states, and at the quantum critical point $H_c$ the low-temperature expansion approaches a $1/\sqrt{T}$ divergence. Thus, our data agree very well with the expected quantum critical behaviour.

Anomalous expansion and phonon damping due to the Co spin-state transition in RCoO_3 with R = La, Pr, Nd and Eu

We present a combined study of the thermal expansion and the thermal conductivity of the perovskite series RCoO_3 with R = La, Nd, Pr and Eu. The well-known spin-state transition in LaCoO_3 is strongly affected by the exchange of the R ions due to their different ionic radii, i.e. chemical pressure. This can be monitored in detail by measurements of the thermal expansion, which is a highly sensitive probe for detecting spin-state transitions. The Co ions in the higher spin state act as additional scattering centers for phonons, therefore suppressing the phonon thermal conductivity. Based on the analysis of the interplay between spin-state transition and heat transport, we present a quantitative model of the thermal conductivity for the entire series. In PrCoO_3, an additional scattering effect is active at low temperatures. This effect arises from the crystal field splitting of the 4f multiplet, which allows for resonant scattering of phonons between the various 4f levels.

Pyroxenes: A new class of multiferroics

Pyroxenes with the general formula $AM$Si$_2$O$_6$ ($A$ = mono- or divalent metal, $M$ = di- or trivalent metal) are shown to be a new class of multiferroic materials. In particular, we have found so far that NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ becomes ferroelectric in a magnetically ordered state below $\simeq 6$ K. Similarly, magnetically driven ferroelectricity is also detected in the Li homologues, LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 18$ K) and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 11$ K). In all these monoclinic systems the electric polarization can be strongly modified by magnetic fields. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, pyroelectric current and dielectric constants (and their dependence on magnetic field) are performed using a natural crystal of aegirine (NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$) and synthetic crystals of LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ grown from melt solution. For NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ a temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram for NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ is proposed. Exchange constants are computed on the basis of {\it ab initio} band structure calculations. The possibility of a spiral magnetic structure caused by frustration as origin of the multiferroic behaviour is discussed. We propose that other pyroxenes may also be multiferroic, and that the versatility of this family offers an exceptional opportunity to study general conditions for and mechanisms of magnetically driven ferroelectricity.

Magnetoelastic coupling across the metamagnetic transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ (0.2 < x < 0.5)

The magnetoelastic coupling in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ and in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$ has been studied combining high-resolution dilatometer and diffraction techniques. Both compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coefficient at zero and at high magnetic field as well as an exceptionally large magnetostriction. All these structural effects, which are strongest in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, point to a redistribution of electrons between the different $t_{2g}$ orbitals tuned by temperature and magnetic field. The temperature and the field dependence of the thermal-expansion anomalies in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ yield evidence for a critical end-point lying close to the low-temperature metamagnetic transition; however, the expected scaling relations are not well fulfilled.

Thermodynamic properties of the field-induced Neel order of TlCuCl3

TlCuCl3 shows a quantum phase transition from a spin-gap phase to a Neel-ordered ground state as a function of magnetic field around H_{C0}~4.8T. From measurements of the specific heat c and the linear thermal expansion alpha_i we calculate the Grueneisen parameter Gamma_i(T)=alpha_i/c. Close to H_{C0} we find a diverging Gamma_i(T->0, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. However, the predicted individual temperature dependencies of alpha(T) and c(T) are not reproduced by our experimental data.

Uniaxial pressure dependencies of the phase transitions in GdMnO$_3$

GdMnO$_3$ shows an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below $\simeq 42$ K, transforms into a canted A-type antiferromagnet below $\simeq 20$ K, and for finite magnetic fields along the b axis ferroelectric order occurs below $\simeq 12$ K. From high-resolution thermal expansion measurements along all three principal axes, we determine the uniaxial pressure dependencies of the various transition temperatures and discuss their correlation to changes of the magnetic exchange couplings in $R$MnO$_3$ ($R = {\rm La, ... Electronic structure of $RE$AuMg and $RE$AgMg ($RE$ = Eu, Gd, Yb)

We have investigated the electronic structure of the equiatomic EuAuMg, GdAuMg, YbAuMg and GdAgMg intermetallics using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectra revealed that the Yb and Eu are divalent while the Gd is trivalent. The spectral weight in the vicinity of the Fermi level is dominated by the mix of Mg $s$, Au/Ag $sp$ and $RE$ $spd$ bands, and not by the $RE$ $4f$. We also found that the Au and Ag $d$ bands are extraordinarily narrow, as if the noble metal atoms were impurities submerged in a low density $sp$ metal host. The experimental results were compared with band structure calculations, and we found good agreement provided that the spin-orbit interaction in the Au an Ag $d$ bands is included and correlation effects in an open $4f$ shell are accounted for using the local density approximation + Hubbard $U$ scheme. Nevertheless, limitations of such a mean-field scheme to explain excitation spectra are also evident.

Magnetoresistance, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect of equiatomic rare-earth transition-metal magnesium compounds

We present a study of the magnetoresistance, the specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect of equiatomic $RET$Mg intermetallics with $RE = {\rm La}$, Eu, Gd, Yb and $T = {\rm Ag}$, Au and of GdAuIn. Depending on the composition these compounds are paramagnetic ($RE = {\rm La}$, Yb) or they order either ferro- or antiferromagnetically with transition temperatures ranging from about 13 to 81 K. All of them are metallic, but the resistivity varies over 3 orders of magnitude. The magnetic order causes a strong decrease of the resistivity and around the ordering temperature we find pronounced magnetoresistance effects. The magnetic ordering also leads to well-defined anomalies in the specific heat. An analysis of the entropy change leads to the conclusions that generally the magnetic transition can be described by an ordering of localized $S=7/2$ moments arising from the half-filled $4f^7$ shells of Eu$^{2+}$ or Gd$^{3+}$. However, for GdAgMg we find clear evidence for two phase transitions indicating that the magnetic ordering sets in partially below about 125 K and is completed via an almost first-order transition at 39 K. The magnetocaloric effect is weak for the antiferromagnets and rather pronounced for the ferromagnets for low magnetic fields around the zero-field Curie temperature.

Pressure-driven orbital reorientation and change in Mott-Hubbard gap in YTiO3

We investigate the crystal structure of YTiO3 at high pressures up to 30 GPa by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (T = 295 K). The variation of the Ti--O bond lengths with pressure evidences a distinct change in the distortion of the TiO_6 octahedra at around 10 GPa, indicating a pressure-driven spatial reorientation of the occupied Ti 3d(t_2g) orbitals. The pressure-induced reduction of the optical band gap of YTiO3 is determined quantitatively by mid-infrared synchrotron micro-spectroscopy and discussed in terms of bond length and orbital orientation changes.

Heat transport in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and CuGeO_3

In the low dimensional spin systems $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ and $CuGeO_3$ the thermal conductivities along different crystal directions show pronounced double-peak structures and strongly depend on magnetic fields. For $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ the experimental data can be described by a purely phononic heat current and resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations. A similar effect seems to be important in $CuGeO_3$, too but, in addition, a magnetic contribution to the heat transport may be present.

Reexamination of the microscopic couplings of the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet CuGeO_3

Experimental data for the magnetic susceptibility and magnetostriction of CuGeO_3 are analyzed within a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic model with nearest ({J_1}) and next-nearest neighbour interactions ({J_2}). We show that the ratio of the exchange constants in the antiferromagnetic chains of CuGeO_3 amounts to ${J_2}/{J_1}$ = 0.354(0.01), i.e. it is significantly larger than the critical value for the formation of a spontaneous gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum without lattice dimerization. The susceptibility data are reproduced by our numerical results over the temperature range from 20K to 950K to a high degree of accuracy for ${J_1} = 80.2 (3.0)$ and ${J_2} = 28.4 (1.8)$. The pressure dependence of the exchange constants is estimated from magnetostriction data. Furthermore, the specific heat data are checked on consistency against the calculated entropy of the above model.
