One can hear the shape of ellipses of small eccentricity

We show that if the eccentricity of an ellipse is sufficiently small then up to isometries it is spectrally unique among all smooth domains. We do not assume any symmetry, convexity, or closeness to the ellipse, on the class of domains. In the course of the proof we also show that for nearly circular domains, the lengths of periodic orbits that are shorter than the perimeter of the domain must belong to the singular support of the wave trace. As a result we also obtain a Laplace spectral rigidity result for the class of axially symmetric nearly circular domains.

A Gutzwiller trace formula for stationary space-times

We give a relativistic generalization of the Gutzwiller-Duistermaat-Guillemin trace formula for the wave group of a compact Riemannian manifold to globally hyperbolic stationary space-times with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces. We introduce several (essentially equivalent) notions of trace of self-adjoint operators on the null-space $\ker \Box$ of the wave operator and define $U(t)$ to be translation by the flow $e^{t Z}$ of the timelike Killing vector field $Z$ on $\Box$. The spectrum of $Z$ on $\ker \Box$ is discrete and the singularities of $\rm{Tr}\;e^{t Z} |_{\ker \Box}$ occur at periods of periodic orbits of $\exp t Z$ on the symplectic manifold of null geodesics. The trace formula gives a Weyl law for the eigenvalues of $Z$ on $\ker \Box$.

Eigenfunction asymptotics and spectral Rigidity of the ellipse

This paper is part of a series concerning the isospectral problem for an ellipse. In this paper, we study Cauchy data of eigenfunctions of the ellipse with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Using many classical results on ellipse eigenfunctions, we determine the microlocal defect measures of the Cauchy data of the eigenfunctions. The ellipse has integrable billiards, i.e. the boundary phase space is foliated by invariant curves of the billiard map. We prove that, for any invariant curve $C$, there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions whose Cauchy data concentrates on $C$. We use this result to give a new proof that ellipses are infinitesimally spectrally rigid among $C^{\infty}$ domains with the symmetries of the ellipse.

Entropy of Bergman measures of a toric Kaehler manifold

Associated to the Bergman kernels of a polarized toric Kaehler manifold $(M, ω, L, h)$ are sequences of measures $\{μ_k^z\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ parametrized by the points $z \in M$. We determine the asymptotics of the entropies $H(μ_k^z)$ of these measures. The sequence $μ_k^z$ in some ways resembles a sequence of convolution powers; we determine precisely when it actually is such a sequence.

Interfaces in spectral asymptotics and nodal sets

This is largely a survey of results obtained jointly with Boris Hanin and Peng Zhou on interfaces in spectral asymptotics, both for Schrödinger operators on $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$ and for Toeplitz Hamiltonians acting on holomorphic sections of ample line bundles $L \to M$ over Kähler manifolds $(M, ω)$. By an interface is meant a hypersurface, either in physical space ${\mathbb R}^d$ or in phase space, separating an allowed region where spectral asymptotics are standard and a forbidden region where they are non-standard. The main question is to give the detailed transition between the two types of asymptotics across the hypersurface (i.e. interface). In the real Schrödinger setting, the asymptotics are of Airy type; in the Kähler setting they are of Erf (Gaussian error function) type. In addition, we introduce the Bargmann-Fock space of a positive Hermitian line bundle and study interface asymptotics in that setting.

Topology of the nodal set of random equivariant spherical harmonics on $S^3$

We show that real and imaginary parts of equivariant spherical harmonics on $S^3$ have almost surely a single nodal component. Moreover, if the degree of the spherical harmonic is $N$ and the equivariance degree is $m$, then the expected genus is proportional to $m \left(\frac{N^2 - m^2}{2} + N\right) $. Hence if $\frac{m}{N}= c $ for fixed $0 < c < 1$, the genus has order $N^3$.

Central Limit theorem for toric \kahler manifolds

Associated to the Bergman kernels of a polarized toric \kahler manifold $(M, ω, L, h)$ are sequences of measures $\{μ_k^z\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ parametrized by the points $z \in M$. For each $z$ in the open orbit, we prove a central limit theorem for $μ_k^z$. The center of mass of $μ_k^z$ is the image of $z$ under the moment map; after re-centering at $0$ and dilating by $\sqrt{k}$, the re-normalized measure tends to a centered Gaussian whose variance is the Hessian of the \kahler potential at $z$. We further give a remainder estimate of Berry-Esseen type. The sequence $\{μ_k^z\}$ is generally not a sequence of convolution powers and the proofs only involve \kahler analysis.

Interface asymptotics of Partial Bergman kernels around a critical level

In a recent series of articles (arXiv:1604.06655, arXiv:1708.09267), the authors have studied the transition behavior of partial Bergman kernels $Π_{k, [E_1, E_2]}(z,w)$ and the associated DOS (density of states) $Π_{k, [E_1, E_2]}(z)$ across the interface $\ccal$ between the allowed and forbidden regions. Partial Bergman kernels are Toeplitz Hamiltonians quantizing Morse functions $H: M \to \R$ on a \kahler manifold. The allowed region is $H^{-1}([E_1, E_2])$ and the interface $\ccal$ is its boundary. In prior articles it was assumed that the endpoints $E_j$ were regular values of $H$. This article completes the series by giving parallel results when an endpoint is a critical value of $H$. In place of the Erf scaling asymptotics in a $k^{-\half} $ tube around $\ccal$ for regular interfaces, one obtains $δ$-asymptotics in $k^{-\frac{1}{4}}$-tubes around singular points of a critical interface. In $k^{-\half}$ tubes, the transition law is given by the osculating metaplectic propagator.

Log-scale equidistribution of nodal sets in Grauert tubes

Let $M_{τ_0}$ be the Grauert tube (of some fixed radius $τ_0$) of a compact, negatively curved, real analytic Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary. Let $ϕ_λ$ be a Laplacian eigenfunction on $M$ of eigenvalues $-λ^2$ and let $ϕ_λ^\mathbb{C}$ be its holomorphic extension to $M_{τ_0}$. In this article, we prove that on $M_{τ_0} \setminus M$, there exists a dimensional constant $α> 0$ and a full density subsequence $ \{λ_{j_k}\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ of the spectrum for which the masses of the complexified eigenfunctions $ϕ_{λ_{j_k}}^\mathbb{C}$ are asymptotically equidistributed at length scale $(\log λ_{j_k})^{-α}$. Moreover, the complex zeros of $ϕ_{λ_{j_k}}^\mathbb{C}$ also become equidistributed on this logarithmic length scale.

Interface asymptotics of partial Bergman kernels on $S^1$-symmetric Kaehler manifolds

This article is concerned with asymptotics of equivariant Bergman kernels and partial Bergman kernels for polarized projective Kahler manifolds invariant under a Hamiltonian holomorphic $S^1$ action. Asymptotics of partial Bergman kernel are obtained in the allowed region $\mathcal{A}$ resp. forbidden region $\mathcal{F}$, generalizing results of Shiffman-Zelditch, Shiffman-Tate-Zelditch and Pokorny-Singer for toric Kahler manifolds. The main result gives scaling asymptotics of equivariant Bergman kernels and partial Bergman kernels in the transition region around the interface $\partial \mathcal{A}$, generalizing recent work of Ross-Singer on partial Bergman kernels, and refining the Ross-Singer transition asymptotics to apply to equivariant Bergman kernels.

Nodal intersections and Geometric Control

This article contains a generalization of the authors' results on numbers of nodal points of eigenfunctions on "good curves" in analytic plane domains (arXiv:0710.0101). The term `good' means that the $L^2$ norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions of eigenvalue $λ^2$ to the curve are bounded below by $e^{- C λ}$. In this article, the result is generalized to all real analytic Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ of any dimension $m$ without boundary. Moreover, a similar lower bound is given for the Hausdorff $m-2$ measure of the intersection of the nodal set with a good real analytic hypersurface. Most of the article is devoted to giving a dynamical or geometric control condition for `goodness' of a hypersurface. The conditions are that the hypersurface $H$ be asymmetric with respect to geodesics and that the flowout of the unit vectors with footpoint on $H$ have full measure in $S^*M. $ This gives a partial answer to a question of Bourgain-Rudnick of characterizing hypersurfaces $H$ on which a sequence of eigenfunctions vanishes. We show that under our conditions, a positive density sequence cannot vanish on $H$ or even have smaller $L^2$ norms than $e^{- C λ}$

Heat kernel measures on random surfaces

The heat kernel on the symmetric space of positive definite Hermitian matrices is used to endow the spaces of Bergman metrics of degree k on a Riemann surface M with a family of probability measures depending on a choice of the background metric. Under a certain matrix-metric correspondence, each positive definite Hermitian matrix corresponds to a Kahler metric on M. The one and two point functions of the random metric are calculated in a variety of limits as k and t tend to infinity. In the limit when the time t goes to infinity the fluctuations of the random metric around the background metric are the same as the fluctuations of random zeros of holomorphic sections. This is due to the fact that the random zeros form the boundary of the space of Bergman metrics.

Off-diagonal decay of toric Bergman kernels

We study the off-diagonal decay of Bergman kernels $Π_{h^k}(z,w)$ and Berezin kernels $P_{h^k}(z,w)$ for ample invariant line bundles over compact toric projective \kahler manifolds of dimension $m$. When the metric is real analytic, $P_{h^k}(z,w) \simeq k^m \exp - k D(z,w)$ where $D(z,w)$ is the diastasis. When the metric is only $C^{\infty}$ this asymptotic cannot hold for all $(z,w)$ since the diastasis is not even defined for all $(z,w)$ close to the diagonal. We prove that for general $C^{\infty}$ metrics, $P_{h^k}(z,w) \simeq k^m \exp - k D(z,w)$ as long as $w$ lies on the ${\mathbb R}_+^m$-orbit of $z$, and for general $(z,w)$, $\limsup_{k \to \infty} \frac{1}{k} \log P_{h^k}(z,w) \leq - D(z^*,w^*)$ where $D(z, w^*)$ is the diastasis between $z$ and the translate of $w$ by $(S^1)^m$ to the ${\mathbb R}_+^m$ orbit of $z$, complementary to Mike Christ's negative results (arXiv:1308.5644).

Scaling of Harmonic Oscillator Eigenfunctions and Their Nodal Sets Around the Caustic

We study the scaling asymptotics of the eigenspace projection kernels $Π_{\hbar, E}(x,y)$ of the isotropic Harmonic Oscillator $- \hbar ^2 Δ+ |x|^2$ of eigenvalue $E = \hbar(N + \frac{d}{2})$ in the semi-classical limit $\hbar \to 0$. The principal result is an explicit formula for the scaling asymptotics of $Π_{\hbar, E}(x,y)$ for $x,y$ in a $\hbar^{2/3}$ neighborhood of the caustic $\mathcal C_E$ as $\hbar \to 0.$ The scaling asymptotics are applied to the distribution of nodal sets of Gaussian random eigenfunctions around the caustic as $\hbar \to 0$. In previous work we proved that the density of zeros of Gaussian random eigenfunctions of $\hat{H}_{\hbar}$ have different orders in the Planck constant $\hbar$ in the allowed and forbidden regions: In the allowed region the density is of order $\hbar^{-1}$ while it is $\hbar^{-1/2}$ in the forbidden region. Our main result on nodal sets is that the density of zeros is of order $\hbar^{-\frac{2}{3}}$ in an $\hbar^{\frac{2}{3}}$-tube around the caustic. This tube radius is the `critical radius'. For annuli of larger inner and outer radii $\hbar^α$ with $0< α< \frac{2}{3}$ we obtain density results which interpolate between this critical radius result and our prior ones in the allowed and forbidden region. We also show that the Hausdorff $(d-2)$-dimensional measure of the intersection of the nodal set with the caustic is of order $\hbar^{- \frac{2}{3}}$.

Completeness of boundary traces of eigenfunctions

In this paper, we study the boundary traces of eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth and bounded domain. An identity derived by Bäcker, Fürstburger, Schubert, and Steiner, expressing (in some sense) the asymptotic completeness of the set of boundary traces in a frequency window of size O(1), is proved both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We then prove a semiclassical generalization of this identity.

Logarithmic lower bound on the number of nodal domains

We prove that the number of nodal domains of a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions grows at least logarithmically with the eigenvalue on negatively curved `real Riemann surfaces'. The geometric model is the same as in prior joint work with Junehyuk Jung (arXiv:1310.2919, to appear in J. Diff. Geom), where the number of nodal domains was shown to tend to infinity, but without a specified rate. The proof of the logarithmic rate uses the new logarithmic scale quantum ergodicity results of Hezari-Riviere (arXiv:1411.4078) and X. Han (arXiv:1410.3911).

Survey of the inverse spectral problem for the Notices of the ICCM

This is an updated survey on the inverse spectral problem written for the Notices of the ICCM. It rapidly reviews some of the material in the previous survey of the same title (arXiv:math/0402356) and then discusses some relatively new results (rigidity results for the ellipse, phase shifts in scattering theory). The last section poses a number of open problems involving "inverse results for oscillatory integrals".

Focal points and sup-norms of eigenfunctions on analytic Riemannian manifolds II: the two-dimensional case

In the recent work arXiv:1311.3999, the authors proved that real analytic manifolds $(M, g)$ with maximal eigenfunction growth must have a self-focal point p whose first return map has an invariant L1 measure on $S^*_p M$. In this addendum we add a purely dynamical argument on circle maps to improve the conclusion to: all geodesics from p are smoothly closed.

Gaussian beams on Zoll manifolds and maximally degenerate Laplacians

Gaussian beams exist along all closed geodesics of a Zoll surface, despite the fact that the algorithm for constructing them assumes that the closed geodesics are non-degenerate. Similarly, there exists a global Birkhoff normal for a Zoll Laplacian despite the degeneracy. We explain why both algorithms work in the Zoll case and give an exact formula for the sub-principal normal form invariant. In the case of "maximally degenerate" Zoll Laplacians, this invariant vanishes and we obtain new geometric constraints on such Zoll metrics.

Number of nodal domains of eigenfunctions on non-positively curved surfaces with concave boundary

It is an open problem in general to prove that there exists a sequence of $Δ_g$-eigenfunctions $ϕ_{j_k}$ on a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ for which the number $N(ϕ_{j_k}) $ of nodal domains tends to infinity with the eigenvalue. Our main result is that $N(ϕ_{j_k}) \to \infty$ along a subsequence of eigenvalues of density $1$ if the $(M, g)$ is a non-positively curved surface with concave boundary, i.e. a generalized Sinai or Lorentz billiard. Unlike the recent closely related work of Ghosh-Reznikov-Sarnak and of the authors on the nodal domain counting problem, the surfaces need not have any symmetries.

Scaling asymptotics of heat kernels of line bundles

We consider a general Hermitian holomorphic line bundle $L$ on a compact complex manifold $M$ and let ${\Box}^q_p$ be the Kodaira Laplacian on $(0,q)$ forms with values in $L^p$. The main result is a complete asymptotic expansion for the semi-classically scaled heat kernel $\exp(-u{\Box}^q_p/p)(x,x)$ along the diagonal. It is a generalization of the Bergman/Szegö kernel asymptotics in the case of a positive line bundle, but no positivity is assumed. We give two proofs, one based on the Hadamard parametrix for the heat kernel on a principal bundle and the second based on the analytic localization of the Dirac-Dolbeault operator.

Stability and integration over Bergman metrics

We study partition functions of random Bergman metrics, with the actions defined by a class of geometric functionals known as `stability functions'. We introduce a new stability invariant - the critical value of the coupling constant - defined as the minimal coupling constant for which the partition function converges. It measures the minimal degree of stability of geodesic rays in the space the Bergman metrics, with respect to the action. We calculate this critical value when the action is the $ν$-balancing energy, and show that $γ_k^{\rm crit} = k - h$ on a Riemann surface of genus $h$.

Szego kernels and Poincare series

Let $M = \tilde{M}/Γ$ be a Kahler manifold, where $\tilde{M}$ is the universal Kahler cover, and where $Γ$ is the deck transformation group. Let $(L, h) \to M$ be a positive Hermitian holomorophic line bundle. Lift the Hermitian line bundle to $\tilde{M}$ and consider the relation between the orthogonal projection onto holomorphic sections on the quotient and onto $L^2$ holomorphic sections on $\tilde{M}$. We prove that the quotient Szego kernel is given by the periodization of the $L^2$ Szego kernel of the universal cover, i.e. its sum over the deck group $Γ$. Although this is a standard result for symmetric spaces (it is used in the Selberg trace formula) and is also standard for heat and wave kernels, it seems that a proof of the sum over Gamma formula was lacking for Szego kernels of positive line bundles over general Kahler manifolds. We apply the result to give a simple proof of Napier's theorem on the holomorphic convexity of $\tilde{M}$ with respect to $\tilde{L}^N$ and to surjectivity of Poincaré series. We also simplify the discussion of Poincare series in Kollar's book.

Equidistribution of phase shifts in semiclassical potential scattering

Consider a semiclassical Hamiltonian $H := h^{2} Δ+ V - E$ where $Δ$ is the positive Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $V \in C^{\infty}_{0}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and $E > 0$ is an energy level. We prove that under an appropriate dynamical hypothesis on the Hamilton flow corresponding to $H$, the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix $S_{h}(V)$ define a measure on $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ that converges to Lebesgue measure away from $1 \in \mathbb{S}^{1}$ as $h \to 0$.

Focal points and sup-norms of eigenfunctions

If $(M,g)$ is a compact real analytic Riemannian manifold, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for there to be a sequence of quasimodes of order $o(λ)$ saturating sup-norm estimates. In particular, it gives optimal conditions for existence of eigenfunctions satisfying maximal sup norm bounds. The condition is that there exists a self-focal point $x_0\in M$ for the geodesic flow at which the associated Perron-Frobenius operator $U_{x_0}: L^2(S_{x_0}^*M) \to L^2(S_{x_0}^*M)$ has a nontrivial invariant $L^2$ function. The proof is based on an explict Duistermaat-Guillemin-Safarov pre-trace formula and von Neumann's ergodic theorem.

Matrix elements of Fourier Integral Operators

This article is concerned with the semi-classical limits of matrix elements $<F ϕ_j, ϕ_j>$ of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian $Δ_g$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with respect to a Fourier integral operator $F$ on $L^2(M)$. Many results exist for the case where $F$ is a pseudo-differential operator, but matrix elements of Fourier integral operators involve new considerations. The limits reflect the extent to which the canonical relation of $F$ is invariant under the geodesic flow of $(M, g)$. When the canonical relation is almost nowhere invariant, a density one subsequence of the matrix elements tends to zero (related results arose first in the study of quantum ergodic restriction theorems). The limit states are invariant measures on the canonical relation of $F$ and their invariance properties are explained. The invariance properties in the case of Hecke operators answers an old question raised by the author.

Median and mean of the Supremum of $L^2$ normalized random holmorphic fields

We prove that the expected value and median of the supremum of $L^2$ normalized random holomorphic fields of degree $n$ on $m$-dimensional Kähler manifolds are asymptotically of order $\sqrt{m\log n}$. This improves the prior result of Shiffman-Zelditch (arXiv:math/0303335) that the upper bound of the media is of order $\sqrt{\log n}$ The estimates are based on the entropy methods of Dudley and Sudakov combined with a precise analysis of the relevant pseudo-metric and its covering numbers, which can be precisely evaluated using off-diagonal asymptotics of Bergman kernels. Recent work of the authors on the value distribution of these fields are also used to get precise constants.

Nodal Sets of Random Eigenfunctions for the Isotropic Harmonic Oscillator

We consider Gaussian random eigenfunctions (Hermite functions) of fixed energy level of the isotropic semi-classical Harmonic Oscillator on ${\bf R}^n$. We calculate the expected density of zeros of a random eigenfunction in the semi-classical limit $h \to 0.$ In the allowed region the density is of order $h^{-1},$ while in the forbidden region the density is of order $h^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. The computer graphics due to E.J. Heller illustrate this difference in "frequency" between the allowed and forbidden nodal sets.

Number of nodal domains and singular points of eigenfunctions of negatively curved surfaces with an isometric involution

We prove two types of nodal results for density one subsequences of an orthonormal basis $\{ϕ_j\}$ of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a negatively curved compact surface. The first type of result involves the intersections $Z_{ϕ_j} \cap H$ of the nodal set $Z_{ϕ_j}$ of $ϕ_j$ with a smooth curve $H$. Using recent results on quantum ergodic restriction theorems and prior results on periods of eigenfunctions over curves, we prove that under an asymmetry assumption on $H$, the number of intersection points tends to infinity for a density one subsequence of the $ϕ_j$. . We also prove that the number of zeros of the normal derivative $\partial_ν ϕ_j$ on $H$ tends to infinity. From these results we obtain a lower bound on the number of nodal domains of even and odd eigenfunctions on surfaces with an isometric involution. Using (and generalizing) a geometric argument of Ghosh-Reznikov-Sarnak, we show that the number of nodal domains of even or odd eigenfunctions tends to infinity for a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions.

Quantum ergodic restriction for Cauchy data: Interior QUE and restricted QUE

We prove a quantum ergodic restriction theorem for the Cauchy data of a sequence of quantum ergodic eigenfunctions on a hypersurface $H$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. The technique of proof is to use a Rellich type identity to relate quantum ergodicity of Cauchy data on $H$ to quantum ergodicity of eigenfunctions on the global manifold $M$. This has the interesting consequence that if the eigenfunctions are quantum unique ergodic on the global manifold $M$, then the Cauchy data is automatically quantum unique ergodic on $H$ with respect to operators whose symbols vanish to order one on the glancing set of unit tangential directions to $H$.

Random Kähler Metrics

The purpose of this article is to propose a new method to define and calculate path integrals over metrics on a Kähler manifold. The main idea is to use finite dimensional spaces of Bergman metrics, as an approximation to the full space of Kähler metrics. We use the theory of large deviations to decide when a sequence of probability measures on the spaces of Bergman metrics tends to a limit measure on the space of all Kähler metrics. Several examples are considered.

Critical values of random analytic functions on complex manifolds

We study the asymptotic distribution of critical values of random holomorphic `polynomials' s_n on a Kaehler manifold M as the degree n tends to infinity. By `polynomial' of degree n we mean a holomorphic section of the nth power of a positive Hermitian holomorphic line bundle $(L, h). In the special case M = CP^m and L = O(1), and h is the Fubini-Study metric, the random polynomials are the SU(m + 1) polynomials. By a critical value we mean the norm ||s_n||_h of s_n at a non-zero critical point of the norm. The metric and Kahler form endow the polynomials with a Hilbert space structure and we consider the associated Gaussian random polynomials and the spherical ensemble where ||s_n|| = 1 is chosen from Haar measure. Our main result is that the expected limit distribution of critical values as n tends to infinity in the spherical ensemble is universal (i.e. is independent of the choice of h), and we give an explicit formula for it. The limit distribution is the same as for suitably normalized Gaussian measures.

Ergodicity and intersections of nodal sets and geodesics on real analytic surfaces

We consider the the intersections of the complex nodal set of the analytic continuation of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a real analytic surface with the complexification of a geodesic. We prove that if the geodesic flow is ergodic and if the geodesic is periodic and satisfies a generic asymmetry condition, then the intersection points condense along the real geodesic and become uniformly distributed with respect to its arc-length. We prove an analogous result for non-periodic geodesics except that the `origin' is allowed to move with $λ_j$. The proof uses the quantum ergodic restriction theorem due to J. Toth and the author (see also Dyatlov-Zworski).

Random orthonormal bases of spaces of high dimension

We consider a sequence H_N of Hilbert spaces of dimensions d_N tending to infinity. The motivating examples are eigenspaces or quasi-mode spaces of a Laplace or Schrodinger operator. We define a random ONB of H_N by fixing one ONB and changing it by a random element of U(d_N). A random ONB of the direct sum of the H_N is an independent sequence {U_N} of random ONB's of the H_N. We prove that if d_N tends to infinity and if the normalized traces of observables in H_N tend to a unique limit state, then a random ONB also tends to that limit state. This generalizes an earlier result of the author for eigenspaces of the standard 2-sphere, and shows that the result does not depend on how fast the dimensions grow. In particular it is valid for eigenspaces of a flat rational torus in dimensions > 4. The main idea is to convert quantum ergodicity into a problem on the moments of inertia of permutahedra and to calculate the moments using Schur polynomials.

Simple matrix models for random Bergman metrics

Recently, the authors have proposed a new approach to the theory of random metrics, making an explicit link between probability measures on the space of metrics on a Kahler manifold and random matrix models. We consider simple examples of such models and compute the one and two-point functions of the metric. These geometric correlation functions correspond to new interesting types of matrix model correlators. We study a large class of examples and provide in particular a detailed study of the Wishart model.

Gravitational Actions in Two Dimensions and the Mabuchi Functional

The Mabuchi energy is an interesting geometric functional on the space of Kähler metrics that plays a crucial rôle in the study of the geometry of Kähler manifolds. We show that this functional, as well as other related geometric actions, contribute to the effective gravitational action when a massive scalar field is coupled to gravity in two dimensions in a small mass expansion. This yields new theories of two-dimensional quantum gravity generalizing the standard Liouville models.

On eigenfunction restriction estimates and $L^4$-bounds for compact surfaces with nonpositive curvature

Let $(M,g)$ be a two-dimensional compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold with nonpostive curvature, then we shall give improved estimates for the $L^2$-norms of the restrictions of eigenfunctions to unit-length geodesics, compared to the general results of Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov \cite{burq}. By earlier results of Bourgain \cite{bourgainef} and the first author \cite{Sokakeya}, they are equivalent to improvements of the general $L^p$-estimates in \cite{soggeest} for $n=2$ and $2<p<6$. The proof uses the fact that the exponential map from any point in $x_0\in M$ is a universal covering map from $\Rt \simeq T_{x_0}M$ to $M$ (the Cartan-Hadamard- von Mangolt theorem), which allows us to lift the necessary calculations up to the universal cover $(\Rt, \tilde g)$ where $\tilde g$ is the pullback of $g$ via the exponential map. We then prove the main estimates by using the Hadamard parametrix for the wave equation on $(\Rt, \tilde g)$ and the fact that the classical comparison theorem of Günther \cite{Gu} for the volume element in spaces of nonpositive curvature gives us desirable bounds for the principal coefficient of the Hadamard parametrix, allowing us to prove our main result.

Pluri-potential theory on Grauert tubes of real analytic Riemannian manifolds, I

We develop analogues for Grauert tubes of real analytic Riemannian manifolds (M,g) of some basic notions of pluri-potential theory, such as the Siciak extremal function. The basic idea is to use analytic continuations of eigenfunctions in place of polynomials or sections of powers of positive line bundles for pluripotential theory. The analytically continued Poisson-wave kernel plays the role of Bergman kernel. The main results are Weyl laws in the complex domain, distribution of complex zeros of eigenfunctions on locally symmetric spaces, and estimates of triple products of eigenfunctions.

Quantum ergodic restriction theorems, I: interior hypersurfaces in domains with ergodic billiards

Quantum ergodic restriction (QER) is the problem of finding conditions on a hypersurface $H$ so that restrictions $ϕ_j |_H$ to $H$ of $Δ$-eigenfunctions of Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow are quantum ergodic on $H$. We prove two kinds of results: First (i) for any smooth hypersurface $H$, the Cauchy data $(ϕ_j|H, \partial ϕ_j|H)$ is quantum ergodic if the Dirichlet and Neumann data are weighted appropriately. Secondly (ii) we give conditions on $H$ so that the Dirichlet (or Neumann) data is individually quantum ergodic. The condition involves the almost nowhere equality of left and right Poincaré maps for $H$. The proof involves two further novel results: (iii) a local Weyl law for boundary traces of eigenfunctions, and (iv) an 'almost-orthogonality' result for Fourier integral operators whose canonical relations almost nowhere commute with the geodesic flow.

Random Geometry, Quantum Gravity and the Kähler Potential

We propose a new method to define theories of random geometries, using an explicit and simple map between metrics and large hermitian matrices. We outline some of the many possible applications of the formalism. For example, a background-independent measure on the space of metrics can be easily constructed from first principles. Our framework suggests the relevance of a new gravitational effective action and we show that it occurs when coupling the massive scalar field to two-dimensional gravity. This yields new types of quantum gravity models generalizing the standard Liouville case.

Random Riesz energies on compact Kähler manifolds

This article determines the asymptotics of the expected Riesz s-energy of the zero set of a Gaussian random systems of polynomials of degree N as the degree N tends to infinity in all dimensions and codimensions. The asymptotics are proved more generally for sections of any positive line bundle over any compact Kaehler manifold. In comparison with the results on energies of zero sets in one complex dimension due to Qi Zhong (arXiv:0705.2000) (see also [arXiv:0705.2000]), the zero sets have higher energies than randomly chosen points in dimensions > 2 due to clumping of zeros.

Concerning the $L^4$ norms of typical eigenfunctions on compact surfaces

Let $(M,g)$ be a two-dimensional compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold with Laplacian, $Δ_g$. If $e_λ$ are the associated eigenfunctions of $\sqrt{-Δ_g}$ so that $-Δ_g e_λ= λ^2 e_λ$, then it has been known for some time \cite{soggeest} that $\|e_λ\|_{L^4(M)}\lesssim λ^{1/8}$, assuming that $e_λ$ is normalized to have $L^2$-norm one. This result is sharp in the sense that it cannot be improved on the standard sphere because of highest weight spherical harmonics of degree $k$. On the other hand, we shall show that the average $L^4$ norm of the standard basis for the space ${\mathcal H}_k$ of spherical harmonics of degree $k$ on $S^2$ merely grows like $(\log k)^{1/4}$. We also sketch a proof that the average of $\sum_{j = 1}^{2k + 1} \|e_λ\|_{L^4}^4$ for a random orthonormal basis of ${\mathcal H}_k$ is O(1). We are not able to determine the maximum of this quantity over all orthonormal bases of ${\mathcal H}_k$ or for orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions on other Riemannian manifolds. However, under the assumption that the periodic geodesics in $(M,g)$ are of measure zero, we are able to show that for {\it any} orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions we have that $\|e_{λ_{j_k}}\|_{L^4(M)}=o(λ_{j_k}^{1/8})$ for a density one subsequence of eigenvalues $λ_{j_k}$. This assumption is generic and it is the one in the Duistermaat-Gullemin theorem \cite{dg} which gave related improvements for the error term in the sharp Weyl theorem. The proof of our result uses a recent estimate of the first author \cite{Sokakeya} that gives a necessary and sufficient condition that $\|e_λ\|_{L^4(M)}=o(λ^{1/8})$.

Intertwining the geodesic flow and the Schrodinger group on hyperbolic surfaces

We construct an explicit intertwining operator $\lcal$ between the Schrödinger group $e^{it \frac\Lap2} $ and the geodesic flow $g^t$ on certain Hilbert spaces of symbols on the cotangent bundle $T^* \X$ of a compact hyperbolic surface $\X = Γ\backslash \D$. Thus, the quantization Op(\lcal^{-1} a) satisfies an exact Egorov theorem. The construction of $\lcal$ is based on a complete set of Patterson-Sullivan distributions.

Inverse spectral problem for analytic $(Z/2Z)^n$-symmetric domains in $R^n$

In this paper we show that bounded analytic domains in $\R^n$ with mirror symmetries across all coordinate axes are spectrally determined among other such domains. Our approach builds on finding concrete formulas for the wave invariants at a bouncing ball orbit. The wave invariants are calculated from a stationary phase expansion applied to a well-constructed microlocal parametrix for the trace of the resolvent.

Large deviations for zeros of $P(ϕ)_2$ random polynomials

We extend results of Zeitouni-Zelditch on large deviations principles for zeros of Gaussian random polynomials $s$ in one complex variable to certain non-Gaussian ensembles that we call $P(ϕ)_2$ random polynomials. The probability measures are of the form $e^{- S(f)} df$ where the actions $S(f)$ are finite dimensional analgoues of those of $P(ϕ)_2$ quantum field theory. The speed and rate function are the same as in the associated Gaussian case. As a corollary, we prove that the expected distribution of zeros in the $P(ϕ)_2$ ensembles tends to the same equilibrium measure as in the Gaussian case.

Random complex fewnomials, I

We introduce several notions of `random fewnomials', i.e. random polynomials with a fixed number f of monomials of degree N. The f exponents are chosen at random and then the coefficients are chosen to be Gaussian random, mainly from the SU(m + 1) ensemble. The results give limiting formulas as N goes to infinity for the expected distribution of complex zeros of a system of k random fewnomials in m variables. When k = m, for SU(m + 1) polynomials, the limit is the Monge-Ampere measure of a toric Kaehler potential on CP^m obtained by averaging a `discrete Legendre transform' of the Fubini-Study symplectic potential at f points of the unit simplex in R^m.

Random zeros on complex manifolds: conditional expectations

We study the conditional distribution of zeros of a Gaussian system of random polynomials (and more generally, holomorphic sections), given that the polynomials or sections vanish at a point p (or a fixed finite set of points). The conditional distribution is analogous to the pair correlation function of zeros, but we show that it has quite a different small distance behavior. In particular, the conditional distribution does not exhibit repulsion of zeros in dimension one. To prove this, we give universal scaling asymptotics for the conditional zero distribution around p. The key tool is the conditional Szego kernel and its scaling asymptotics.

The Cauchy problem for the homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation, I. Toeplitz quantization

The Cauchy problem for the homogeneous (real and complex) Monge-Ampere equation (HRMA/HCMA) arises from the initial value problem for geodesics in the space of Kahler metrics. It is an ill-posed problem. We conjecture that, in its lifespan, the solution can be obtained by Toeplitz quantizing the Hamiltonian flow defined by the Cauchy data, analytically continuing the quantization, and then taking a kind of logarithmic classical limit. In this article, we prove that in the case of torus invariant metrics (where the HCMA reduces to the HRMA) this "quantum analytic continuation potential" coincides with the well-known Legendre transform potential, and hence solves the equation as long as it is smooth. In the sequel we prove that the Legendre transform potential ceases to solve the HRMA after that time.

The Cauchy problem for the homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation, II. Legendre transform

We continue our study of the Cauchy problem for the homogeneous (real and complex) Monge-Ampere equation (HRMA/HCMA). In the prequel a quantum mechanical approach for solving the HCMA was developed, and was shown to coincide with the well-known Legendre transform approach in the case of the HRMA. In this article---that uses tools of convex analysis and can be read independently---we prove that the candidate solution produced by these methods ceases to solve the HRMA, even in a weak sense, as soon as it ceases to be differentiable.

About the blowup of quasimodes on Riemannian manifolds

On any compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ of dimension $n$, the $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions ${ϕ_λ}$ satisfy $||ϕ_λ||_{\infty} \leq C λ^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ.$ The bound is sharp in the class of all $(M, g)$ since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard $n$-sphere $S^n$. But of course, it is not sharp for many Riemannian manifolds, e.g. flat tori $\R^n/Γ$. We say that $S^n$, but not $\R^n/Γ$, is a Riemannian manifold with maximal eigenfunction growth. The problem which motivates this paper is to determine the $(M, g)$ with maximal eigenfunction growth. In an earlier work, two of us showed that such an $(M, g)$ must have a point $x$ where the set ${\mathcal L}_x$ of geodesic loops at $x$ has positive measure in $S^*_x M$. We strengthen this result here by showing that such a manifold must have a point where the set ${\mathcal R}_x$ of recurrent directions for the geodesic flow through x satisfies $|{\mathcal R}_x|>0$. We also show that if there are no such points, $L^2$-normalized quasimodes have sup-norms that are $o(λ^{n-1)/2})$, and, in the other extreme, we show that if there is a point blow-down $x$ at which the first return map for the flow is the identity, then there is a sequence of quasi-modes with $L^\infty$-norms that are $Ω(λ^{(n-1)/2})$.

Bergman metrics and geodesics in the space of Kähler metrics on toric varieties

Geodesics on the infinite dimensional symmetric space $\hcal$ of Kähler metrics in a fixed Kähler class on a projective Kähler manifold X are solutions of a homogeneous complex Monge-Ampère equation in $X \times A$, where $A \subset \C$ is an annulus. They are analogues of 1PS (one-parameter subgroups) on symmetric spaces $G_{\C}/G$. Donaldson, Arezzo-Tian and Phong-Sturm raised the question whether Monge-Ampère geodesics can be approximated by 1PS geodesics in the symmetric spaces of Bergman metrics. Phong-Sturm proved weak C^0 convergence of Bergman to Monge-Ampère geodesics on a general \kahler manifold. In this article we prove convergence in $C^2(A \times X)$ in the case of toric Kähler metrics, extending our earlier result on $\CP^1$.

Bergman approximations of harmonic maps into the space of Kahler metrics on toric varieties

We generalize the results of Song-Zelditch on geodesics in spaces of Kahler metrics on toric varieties to harmonic maps of any compact Riemannian manifold with boundary into the space of Kahler metrics on a toric variety. We show that the harmonic map equation can always be solved and that such maps may be approximated in the C^2 topology by harmonic maps into the spaces of Bergman metrics. In particular, WZW maps, or equivalently solutions of a homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation on the product of the manifold with a Riemann surface with S^1 boundary admit such approximations. We also show that the Eells-Sampson flow on the space of Kahler potentials is transformed to the usual heat flow on the space of symplectic potentials under the Legendre transform.

Inverse spectral problem for analytic plane domains II: $\Z_2$-symmetric domains

This is part of a series of papers on the inverse spectral problem for bounded analytic plane domains. Here, we use the trace formula established in the first paper (`Balian-Bloch trace formula') to explicitly calculate wave trace invariants associated to bouncing ball orbits and dihedral rays. We use these invariants to prove that simply connected bounded analytic plane domains with one symmetry (which reverses a bouncing ball orbit of fixed length L) are spectrally determined in this class.

On the Spectrum of geometric operators on Kähler manifolds

On a compact Kähler manifold there is a canonical action of a Lie-superalgebra on the space of differential forms. It is generated by the differentials, the Lefschetz operator and the adjoints of these operators. We determine the asymptotic distribution of irreducible representations of this Lie-superalgebra on the eigenspaces of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Because of the high degree of symmetry the Laplace-Beltrami operator on forms can not be quantum ergodic. We show that after taking these symmetries into account quantum ergodicity holds for the Laplace-Beltrami operator and for the Spin^c-Dirac operators if the unitary frame flow is ergodic. The assumptions for our theorem are known to be satisfied for instance for negatively curved Kähler manifolds of odd complex dimension.

Real and complex zeros of Riemannian random waves

We consider Riemannian random waves, i.e. Gaussian random linear combination of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold with frequencies from a short interval (`asymptotically fixed frequency'). We first show that the expected limit distribution of the real zero set of a is uniform with respect to the volume form of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. We then show that the complex zero set of the analytic continuations of such Riemannian random waves to a Grauert tube in the complexification of $M$ tends to a limit current.

Bernstein polynomials, Bergman kernels and toric Kähler varieties

It does not seem to have been observed previously that the classical Bernstein polynomials $B_N(f)(x)$ are closely related to the Bergman-Szego kernels $Π_N$ for the Fubini-Study metric on $\CP^1$: $B_N(f)(x)$ is the Berezin symbol of the Toeplitz operator $Π_N f(N^{-1} D_θ)$. The relation suggests a generalization of Bernstein polynomials to any toric Kahler variety and Delzant polytope $P$. When $f$ is smooth, $B_N(f)(x)$ admits a complete asymptotic expansion. Integrating it over $P$ gives a complete asymptotic expansion for Dedekind-Riemann sums of smooth functions over lattice points in $N P$ related to Euler-MacLaurin sum formulae of Guillemin-Sternberg and others.

Convergence of Bergman geodesics on CP^1

The space of positively curved hermitian metrics on a positive holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex manifold is an infinite-dimensional symmetric space. It is shown by Phong and Sturm that geodesics in this space can be uniformly approximated by geodesics in the finite dimensional spaces of Bergman metrics. We prove a stronger C^2-approximation in the special case of toric (i.e. S^1-invariant) metrics on CP^1.

Counting Nodal Lines Which Touch the Boundary of an Analytic Domain

We consider the zeros on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a Neumann eigenfunction $ϕ_λ$ of a real analytic plane domain $Ω$. We prove that the number of its boundary zeros is $O (λ)$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ$. We also prove that the number of boundary critical points of either a Neumann or Dirichlet eigenfunction is $O(λ)$. It follows that the number of nodal lines of $ϕ_λ$ (components of the nodal set) which touch the boundary is of order $λ$. This upper bound is of the same order of magnitude as the length of the total nodal line, but is the square root of the Courant bound on the number of nodal components in the interior. More generally, the results are proved for piecewise analytic domains.

Number variance of random zeros on complex manifolds, II: smooth statistics

We consider the zero sets $Z_N$ of systems of $m$ random polynomials of degree $N$ in $m$ complex variables, and we give asymptotic formulas for the random variables given by summing a smooth test function over $Z_N$. Our asymptotic formulas show that the variances for these smooth statistics have the growth $N^{m-2}$. We also prove analogues for the integrals of smooth test forms over the subvarieties defined by $k<m$ random polynomials. Such linear statistics of random zero sets are smooth analogues of the random variables given by counting the number of zeros in an open set, which we proved elsewhere to have variances of order $N^{m-1/2}$. We use the variance asymptotics and off-diagonal estimates of Szego kernels to extend an asymptotic normality result of Sodin-Tsirelson to the case of smooth linear statistics for zero sets of codimension one in any dimension $m$.

Test configurations, large deviations and geodesic rays on toric varieties

This article contains a detailed study, in the toric case, of the test configuration geodesic rays defined by Phong-Sturm. We show that the `Bergman approximations' of Phong-Sturm converge in C^1 to the geodesic ray and that the geodesic ray itself is C^{1,1} and no better. The \kahler metrics associated to the geodesic ray of potentials are discontinuous across certain hypersurfaces and are degenerate on certain open sets. A novelty in the analysis is the connection between Bergman metrics, Bergman kernels and the theory of large deviations.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua, III: String/M models

A fundamental problem in contemporary string/M theory is to count the number of inequivalent vacua satisfying constraints in a string theory model. This article contains the first rigorous results on the number and distribution of supersymmetric vacua of type IIb string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with flux. In particular, complete proofs of the counting formulas in Ashok-Douglas and Denef-Douglas are given, together with van der Corput style remainder estimates. We also give evidence that the number of vacua satisfying the tadpole constraint in regions of bounded curvature in moduli space is of exponential growth in $b_3(X)$.

Inverse spectral problem for analytic plane domains I: Balian-Bloch trace formula

We give a rigorous version of the classical Balian-Bloch trace formula, a semiclassical expansion around a periodic reflecting ray of the (regularized) resolvent of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded smooth plane domain. It is equivalent to the Poisson relation (or wave trace formula) between spectrum and closed geodesics. We view it primarily as a computational device for explicitly calculating wave trace invariants. Its effectiveness will be illustrated in subsquent articles in the series in which concrete inverse spectral results are proved.

Lattice path combinatorics and asymptotics of multiplicities of weights in tensor powers

We give asymptotic formulas for the multiplicities of weights and irreducible summands in high-tensor powers $V_λ^{\otimes N}$ of an irreducible representation $V_λ$ of a compact connected Lie group $G$. The weights are allowed to depend on $N$, and we obtain several regimes of pointwise asymptotics, ranging from a central limit region to a large deviations region. We use a complex steepest descent method that applies to general asymptotic counting problems for lattice paths with steps in a convex polytope.

Quantum maps and automorphisms

What does it mean to quantize a symplectic map $χ$? In deformation quantization, it means to construct an automorphism of the $*$ algebra associated to $χ$. In quantum chaos it means to construct unitary operators $U_χ$ such that $A \to U_χ A U_χ^*$ defines an automorphism of the algebra of observables. In geometric quantization and in PDE it means to construct a unitary Fourier integral (or Toeplitz) operator associated to the graph of $χ$. We compare the definitions in the setting of Kahler manifolds $(M, g)$. The main result is a Toeplitz analogue of the Duistermaat-Singer theorem on automorphisms of the pseudo-differential algebra, and its extension to non-simply connected phase spaces, which often occur in applications (quantized symplectic torus automorphisms.

Quantum unique ergodicity

This short note proves that a Laplacian cannot be quantum uniquely ergodic if it possesses a quasimode of order zero which (i) has a singular limit, and (ii) is a linear combination of a uniformly bounded number of eigenfunctions (modulo an o(1) error). Bouncing ball quasimodes of the stadium are believed to have this property (E.J. Heller et al) and so are analogous quasimodes recently constructed by H. Donnelly on certain non-positively curved surfaces. The main ingredient is the proof that all sequences of off-diagonal matrix elements of QUE systems with vanishing spectral gaps tend to zero.

Riemannian manifolds with maximal eigenfunction growth

On any compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ of dimension $n$, the $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions $\{ϕ_λ\}$ satisfy $||ϕ_λ||_{\infty} \leq C λ^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ.$ The bound is sharp in the class of all $(M, g)$ since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard $n$-sphere $S^n$. Our main result is that such an $(M, g)$ must have a point $x$ where the set ${\mathcal L}_x$ of geodesic loops at $x$ has positive measure in $S^*_x M$. We show that if $(M, g)$ is real analytic, this puts topological restrictions on $M$, e.g. only $M = S^2$ (topologically) in dimension 2 can possess a real analytic metric of maximal eigenfunction growth. We further show that generic metrics on any $M$ fail to have maximal eigenfunction growth. In addition, we construct an example of $(M, g)$ for which ${\mathcal L}_x$ has positive measure for an open set of $x$ but which does not have maximal eigenfunction growth, thus disproving a naive converse to the main result.

Riemannian Manifolds With Uniformly Bounded Eigenfunctions

The standard eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ = e^{i < λ, x >}$ on flat tori $\R^n / L$ have $L^{\infty}$-norms bounded independently of the eigenvalue. In the case of irrational flat tori, it follows that $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions have uniformly bounded $L^{\infty}$-norms. Similar bases exist on other flat manifolds. Does this property characterize flat manifolds? We give an affirmative answer for compact Riemannian manifolds with completely integrable geodesic flows.

Quantum ergodicity of C* dynamical systems

This paper contains a very simple and general proof that eigenfunctions of quantizations of classically ergodic systems become uniformly distributed in phase space. This ergodicity property of eigenfunctions f is shown to follow from a convexity inequality for the invariant states (Af,f). This proof of ergodicity of eigenfunctions simplifies previous proofs (due to A.I. Shnirelman, Colin de Verdiere and the author) and extends the result to the much more general framework of C* dynamical systems.
