Product Manifolds with Improved Spectral Cluster and Weyl Remainder Estimates

We show that if $Y$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with improved $L^q$ eigenfunction estimates then, at least for large enough exponents, one always obtains improved $L^q$ bounds on the product manifold $X\times Y$ if $X$ is another compact manifold. Similarly, improved Weyl remainder term bounds on the spectral counting function of $Y$ lead to corresponding improvements on $X\times Y$. The latter results partly generalize recent ones of Iosevich and Wyman [14] involving products of spheres. Also, if $Y$ is a product of five or more spheres, we are able to obtain optimal $L^q(Y)$ and $L^q(X\times Y)$ eigenfunction and spectral cluster estimates for large $q$, which partly addresses a conjecture from [14] and is related to (and is partly based on) classical bounds for the number of integer lattice point on $λ\cdot S^{n-1}$ for $n\ge5$.

Uniform Sobolev estimates in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ involving singular potentials

We generalize the Stein-Tomas [17] $L^2$-restricition theorem and the uniform Sobolev estimates of Kenig, Ruiz and the second author [11] by allowing critically singular potential. We also obtain Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger and wave operators with such potentials. Due to the fact that there may be nontrivial eigenfunctions we are required to make certain spectral assumptions, such as assuming that the solutions only involve sufficiently large frequencies.

Variable coefficient Wolff-type inequalities and sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on manifolds

The sharp Wolff-type decoupling estimates of Bourgain--Demeter are extended to the variable coefficient setting. These results are applied to obtain new sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on compact Riemannian manifolds, away from the endpoint regularity exponent. More generally, local smoothing estimates are established for a natural class of Fourier integral operators; at this level of generality the results are sharp in odd dimensions, both in terms of the regularity exponent and the Lebesgue exponent.

Localized $L^p$-estimates for eigenfunctions: II

If $(M,g)$ is a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge 2$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions for improved $L^p(M)$-norms of eigenfunctions for all $2<p\ne p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$, the critical exponent. Since improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds imply improvement all other exponents, these conditions are necessary for improved bounds for the critical space. We also show that improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds are valid if these conditions are met and if the half-wave operators, $U(t)$, have no caustics when $t\ne 0$. The problem of finding a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^{p_c}(M)$ improvement remains an interesting open problem.

Concerning Toponogov's Theorem and logarithmic improvement of estimates of eigenfunctions

We use Toponogov's triangle comparison theorem from Riemannian geometry along with quantitative scale oriented variants of classical propagation of singularities arguments to obtain logarithmic improvements of the Kakeya-Nikodym norms introduced in \cite{SKN} for manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature. Using these and results from our paper \cite{BS15} we are able to obtain log-improvements of $L^p(M)$ estimates for such manifolds when $2<p<\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$. These in turn imply $(\logλ)^{σ_n}$, $σ_n\approx n$, improved lower bounds for $L^1$-norms of eigenfunctions of the estimates of the second author and Zelditch~\cite{SZ11}, and using a result from Hezari and the second author~\cite{HS}, under this curvature assumption, we are able to improve the lower bounds for the size of nodal sets of Colding and Minicozzi~\cite{CM} by a factor of $(\log λ)^μ$ for any $μ<\tfrac{2(n+1)^2}{n-1}$, if $n\ge3$.

Improved critical eigenfunction estimates on manifolds of nonpositive curvature

We prove new improved endpoint, $L^{p_c}$, $p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$, estimates (the "kink point") for eigenfunctions on manifolds of nonpositive curvature. We do this by using energy and dispersive estimates for the wave equation as well as new improved $L^p$, $2<p< p_c$, bounds of Blair and the author \cite{BSTop}, \cite{BSK15} and the classical improved sup-norm estimates of Bérard~\cite{Berard}. Our proof uses Bourgain's \cite{BKak} proof of weak-type estimates for the Stein-Tomas Fourier restriction theorem \cite{Tomas}--\cite{Tomas2} as a template to be able to obtain improved weak-type $L^{p_c}$ estimates under this geometric assumption. We can then use these estimates and the (local) improved Lorentz space estimates of Bak and Seeger~\cite{BakSeeg} (valid for all manifolds) to obtain our improved estimates for the critical space under the assumption of nonpositive sectional curvatures.

Localized $L^p$-estimates of eigenfunctions: A note on an article of Hezari and Rivière

We use a straightforward variation on a recent argument of Hezari and Rivière~\cite{HR} to obtain localized $L^p$-estimates for all exponents larger than or equal to the critical exponent $p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$. We are able to this directly by just using the $L^{p}$-bounds for spectral projection operators from our much earlier work \cite{Seig}. The localized bounds we obtain here imply, for instance, that, for a density one sequence of eigenvalues on a manifold whose geodesic flow is ergodic, all of the $L^p$, $2<p\le \infty$, bounds of the corresponding eigenfunctions are relatively small compared to the general ones in \cite{Seig}, which are saturated on round spheres. The connection with quantum ergodicity was established for exponents $2<p<p_c$ in the recent results of the author \cite{SK} and Blair and the author \cite{BS2}; however, the article of Hezari and Rivière~\cite{HR} was the first one to make this connection (in the case of negatively curved manifolds) for the critical exponent, $p_c$. As is well known, and we indicate here, bounds for the critical exponent, $p_c$, imply ones for all of the other exponents $2<p\le \infty$. The localized estimates involve $L^2$-norms over small geodesic balls $B_r$ of radius $r$, and we shall go over what happens for these in certain model cases on the sphere and on manifolds of nonpositive curvature. We shall also state a problem as to when one can improve on the trivial $O(r^{\frac12})$ estimates for these $L^2(B_r)$ bounds. If $r=λ^{-1}$, one can improve on the trivial estimates if one has improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds just by using Hölder's inequality; however, obtaining improved bounds for $r\gg λ^{-1}$ seems to be subtle.

Lower bounds for interior nodal sets of Steklov eigenfunctions

We study the interior nodal sets, $Z_λ$ of Steklov eigenfunctions in an $n$-dimensional relatively compact manifolds $M$ with boundary and show that one has the lower bounds $|Z_λ|\ge cλ^{\frac{2-n}2}$ for the size of its $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The proof is based on a Dong-type identity and estimates for the gradient of Steklov eigenfunctions, similar to those in \cite{SZ1} and \cite{SZ2}, respectively.

Concerning $L^p$ resolvent estimates for simply connected manifolds of constant curvature

We prove families of uniform $(L^r,L^s)$ resolvent estimates for simply connected manifolds of constant curvature (negative or positive) that imply the earlier ones for Euclidean space of Kenig, Ruiz and the second author \cite{KRS}. In the case of the sphere we take advantage of the fact that the half-wave group of the natural shifted Laplacian is periodic. In the case of hyperbolic space, the key ingredient is a natural variant of the Stein-Tomas restriction theorem.

A few endpoint geodesic restriction estimates for eigenfunctions

We prove a couple of new endpoint geodesic restriction estimates for eigenfunctions. In the case of general 3-dimensional compact manifolds, after a $TT^*$ argument, simply by using the $L^2$-boundedness of the Hilbert transform on $\R$, we are able to improve the corresponding $L^2$-restriction bounds of Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov and Hu. Also, in the case of 2-dimensional compact manifolds with nonpositive curvature, we obtain improved $L^4$-estimates for restrictions to geodesics, which, by Hölder's inequality and interpolation, implies improved $L^p$-bounds for all exponents $p\ge 2$. We do this by using oscillatory integral theorems of Hörmander, Greenleaf and Seeger, and Phong and Stein, along with a simple geometric lemma (Lemma \ref{lemma3.2}) about properties of the mixed-Hessian of the Riemannian distance function restricted to pairs of geodesics in Riemannian surfaces. We are also able to get further improvements beyond our new results in three dimensions under the assumption of constant nonpositive curvature by exploiting the fact that in this case there are many totally geodesic submanifolds.

Focal points and sup-norms of eigenfunctions

If $(M,g)$ is a compact real analytic Riemannian manifold, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for there to be a sequence of quasimodes of order $o(λ)$ saturating sup-norm estimates. In particular, it gives optimal conditions for existence of eigenfunctions satisfying maximal sup norm bounds. The condition is that there exists a self-focal point $x_0\in M$ for the geodesic flow at which the associated Perron-Frobenius operator $U_{x_0}: L^2(S_{x_0}^*M) \to L^2(S_{x_0}^*M)$ has a nontrivial invariant $L^2$ function. The proof is based on an explict Duistermaat-Guillemin-Safarov pre-trace formula and von Neumann's ergodic theorem.

On $L^p$-resolvent estimates and the density of eigenvalues for compact Riemannian manifolds

We address an interesting question raised by Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig and Salo about regions ${\mathcal R}_g\subset {\mathbb C}$ for which there can be uniform $L^{\frac{2n}{n+2}}\to L^{\frac{2n}{n-2}}$ resolvent estimates for $Δ_g+ζ$, $ζ\in {\mathcal R}_g$, where $Δ_g$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with metric $g$ on a given compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge3$. This is related to earlier work of Kenig, Ruiz and the third author for the Euclidean Laplacian, in which case the region is the entire complex plane minus any disc centered at the origin. Presently, we show that for the round metric on the sphere, $S^n$, the resolvent estimates in Ferreira et al, involving a much smaller region, are essentially optimal. We do this by establishing sharp bounds based on the distance from $ζ$ to the spectrum of $Δ_{S^n}$. In the other direction, we also show that the bounds in \cite{Kenig} can be sharpened logarithmically for manifolds with nonpositive curvature, and by powers in the case of the torus, ${\mathbb T}^n={\mathbb R}^n/{\mathbb Z}^n$, with the flat metric. The latter improves earlier bounds of Shen. Further improvements for the torus are obtained using recent techniques of the first author and his work with Guth based on the multilinear estimates of Bennett, Carbery and Tao. Our approach also allows us to give a natural necessary condition for favorable resolvent estimates that is based on a measurement of the density of the spectrum of $\sqrt{-Δ_g}$, and, moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition based on natural improved spectral projection estimates for shrinking intervals.

On integrals of eigenfunctions over geodesics

If $(M,g)$ is a compact Riemannian surface then the integrals of $L^2(M)$-normalized eigenfunctions $e_j$ over geodesic segments of fixed length are uniformly bounded. Also, if $(M,g)$ has negative curvature and $γ(t)$ is a geodesic parameterized by arc length, the measures $e_j(γ(t))\, dt$ on $\R$ tend to zero in the sense of distributions as the eigenvalue $\la_j\to \infty$, and so integrals of eigenfunctions over periodic geodesics tend to zero as $\la_j\to \infty$. The assumption of negative curvature is necessary for the latter result.

On Kakeya-Nikodym averages, $L^p$-norms and lower bounds for nodal sets of eigenfunctions in higher dimensions

We extend a result of the second author \cite[Theorem 1.1]{soggekaknik} to dimensions $d \geq 3$ which relates the size of $L^p$-norms of eigenfunctions for $2<p<\frac{2(d+1)}{d-1}$ to the amount of $L^2$-mass in shrinking tubes about unit-length geodesics. The proof uses bilinear oscillatory integral estimates of Lee \cite{leebilinear} and a variable coefficient variant of an "$\veps$ removal lemma" of Tao and Vargas \cite{tv1}. We also use Hörmander's \cite{HorOsc} $L^2$ oscillatory integral theorem and the Cartan-Hadamard theorem to show that, under the assumption of nonpositive curvature, the $L^2$-norm of eigenfunctions $e_\la$ over unit-length tubes of width $\la^{-\frac12}$ goes to zero. Using our main estimate, we deduce that, in this case, the $L^p$-norms of eigenfunctions for the above range of exponents is relatively small. As a result, we can slightly improve the known lower bounds for nodal sets in dimensions $d\ge3$ of Colding and Minicozzi \cite{CM} in the special case of (variable) nonpositive curvature.

The Strauss conjecture on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

On eigenfunction restriction estimates and $L^4$-bounds for compact surfaces with nonpositive curvature

Let $(M,g)$ be a two-dimensional compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold with nonpostive curvature, then we shall give improved estimates for the $L^2$-norms of the restrictions of eigenfunctions to unit-length geodesics, compared to the general results of Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov \cite{burq}. By earlier results of Bourgain \cite{bourgainef} and the first author \cite{Sokakeya}, they are equivalent to improvements of the general $L^p$-estimates in \cite{soggeest} for $n=2$ and $2<p<6$. The proof uses the fact that the exponential map from any point in $x_0\in M$ is a universal covering map from $\Rt \simeq T_{x_0}M$ to $M$ (the Cartan-Hadamard- von Mangolt theorem), which allows us to lift the necessary calculations up to the universal cover $(\Rt, \tilde g)$ where $\tilde g$ is the pullback of $g$ via the exponential map. We then prove the main estimates by using the Hadamard parametrix for the wave equation on $(\Rt, \tilde g)$ and the fact that the classical comparison theorem of Günther \cite{Gu} for the volume element in spaces of nonpositive curvature gives us desirable bounds for the principal coefficient of the Hadamard parametrix, allowing us to prove our main result.

Strichartz estimates and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on manifolds with boundary

We establish Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation on Riemannian manifolds $(Ω,\g)$ with boundary, for both the compact case and the case that $Ω$ is the exterior of a smooth, non-trapping obstacle in Euclidean space. The estimates for exterior domains are scale invariant; the range of Lebesgue exponents $(p,q)$ for which we obtain these estimates is smaller than the range known for Euclidean space, but includes the key $L^4_tL^\infty_x$ estimate, which we use to give a simple proof of well-posedness results for the energy critical Schrödinger equation in 3 dimensions. Our estimates on compact manifolds involve a loss of derivatives with respect to the scale invariant index. We use these to establish well-posedness for finite energy data of certain semilinear Schrödinger equations on general compact manifolds with boundary.

Strichartz estimates for Dirichlet-wave equations in two dimensions with applications

We establish the Strauss conjecture for nontrapping obstacles when the spatial dimension $n$ is two. As pointed out in \cite{HMSSZ} this case is more subtle than $n=3$ or 4 due to the fact that the arguments of the first two authors \cite{SmSo00}, Burq \cite{B} and Metcalfe \cite{M} showing that local Strichartz estimates for obstactles imply global ones require that the Sobolev index, $γ$, equal 1/2 when $n=2$. We overcome this difficulty by interpolating between energy estimates ($γ=0$) and ones for $γ=\frac12$ that are generalizations of Minkowski space estimates of Fang and the third author \cite{FaWa2}, \cite{FaWa}, the second author \cite{So08} and Sterbenz \cite{St05}.

Concerning the $L^4$ norms of typical eigenfunctions on compact surfaces

Let $(M,g)$ be a two-dimensional compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold with Laplacian, $Δ_g$. If $e_λ$ are the associated eigenfunctions of $\sqrt{-Δ_g}$ so that $-Δ_g e_λ= λ^2 e_λ$, then it has been known for some time \cite{soggeest} that $\|e_λ\|_{L^4(M)}\lesssim λ^{1/8}$, assuming that $e_λ$ is normalized to have $L^2$-norm one. This result is sharp in the sense that it cannot be improved on the standard sphere because of highest weight spherical harmonics of degree $k$. On the other hand, we shall show that the average $L^4$ norm of the standard basis for the space ${\mathcal H}_k$ of spherical harmonics of degree $k$ on $S^2$ merely grows like $(\log k)^{1/4}$. We also sketch a proof that the average of $\sum_{j = 1}^{2k + 1} \|e_λ\|_{L^4}^4$ for a random orthonormal basis of ${\mathcal H}_k$ is O(1). We are not able to determine the maximum of this quantity over all orthonormal bases of ${\mathcal H}_k$ or for orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions on other Riemannian manifolds. However, under the assumption that the periodic geodesics in $(M,g)$ are of measure zero, we are able to show that for {\it any} orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions we have that $\|e_{λ_{j_k}}\|_{L^4(M)}=o(λ_{j_k}^{1/8})$ for a density one subsequence of eigenvalues $λ_{j_k}$. This assumption is generic and it is the one in the Duistermaat-Gullemin theorem \cite{dg} which gave related improvements for the error term in the sharp Weyl theorem. The proof of our result uses a recent estimate of the first author \cite{Sokakeya} that gives a necessary and sufficient condition that $\|e_λ\|_{L^4(M)}=o(λ^{1/8})$.

Concerning the Wave equation on Asymptotically Euclidean Manifolds

We obtain KSS, Strichartz and certain weighted Strichartz estimate for the wave equation on $(\R^d, \mathfrak{g})$, $d \geq 3$, when metric $\mathfrak{g}$ is non-trapping and approaches the Euclidean metric like $ x ^{- ρ}$ with $ρ>0$. Using the KSS estimate, we prove almost global existence for quadratically semilinear wave equations with small initial data for $ρ> 1$ and $d=3$. Also, we establish the Strauss conjecture when the metric is radial with $ρ>0$ for $d= 3$.

preprint2010arXiv

Kakeya-Nikodym averages and $L^p$-norms of eigenfunctions

We provide a necessary and sufficient condition that $L^p$-norms, $2<p<6$, of eigenfunctions of the square root of minus the Laplacian on 2-dimensional compact boundaryless Riemannian manifolds $M$ are small compared to a natural power of the eigenvalue $λ$. The condition that ensures this is that their $L^2$ norms over $O(λ^{-1/2})$ neighborhoods of arbitrary unit geodesics are small when $λ$ is large (which is not the case for the highest weight spherical harmonics on $S^2$ for instance). The proof exploits Gauss' lemma and the fact that the bilinear oscillatory integrals in Hörmander's proof of the Carleson-Sjölin theorem become better and better behaved away from the diagonal. Our results are related to a recent work of Bourgain who showed that $L^2$ averages over geodesics of eigenfunctions are small compared to a natural power of the eigenvalue $λ$ provided that the $L^4(M)$ norms are similarly small. Our results imply that QUE cannot hold on a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension two if $L^p$-norms are saturated for a given $2<p<6$. We also show that eigenfunctions cannot have a maximal rate of $L^2$-mass concentrating along unit portions of geodesics that are not smoothly closed.

About the blowup of quasimodes on Riemannian manifolds

On any compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ of dimension $n$, the $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions ${ϕ_λ}$ satisfy $||ϕ_λ||_{\infty} \leq C λ^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ.$ The bound is sharp in the class of all $(M, g)$ since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard $n$-sphere $S^n$. But of course, it is not sharp for many Riemannian manifolds, e.g. flat tori $\R^n/Γ$. We say that $S^n$, but not $\R^n/Γ$, is a Riemannian manifold with maximal eigenfunction growth. The problem which motivates this paper is to determine the $(M, g)$ with maximal eigenfunction growth. In an earlier work, two of us showed that such an $(M, g)$ must have a point $x$ where the set ${\mathcal L}_x$ of geodesic loops at $x$ has positive measure in $S^*_x M$. We strengthen this result here by showing that such a manifold must have a point where the set ${\mathcal R}_x$ of recurrent directions for the geodesic flow through x satisfies $|{\mathcal R}_x|>0$. We also show that if there are no such points, $L^2$-normalized quasimodes have sup-norms that are $o(λ^{n-1)/2})$, and, in the other extreme, we show that if there is a point blow-down $x$ at which the first return map for the flow is the identity, then there is a sequence of quasi-modes with $L^\infty$-norms that are $Ω(λ^{(n-1)/2})$.

On Abstract Strichartz Estimates and the Strauss Conjecture for Nontrapping Obstacles

The purpose of this paper is to show how local energy decay estimates for certain linear wave equations involving compact perturbations of the standard Laplacian lead to optimal global existence theorems for the corresponding small amplitude nonlinear wave equations with power nonlinearities. To achieve this goal, at least for spatial dimensions $n=3$ and 4, we shall show how the aforementioned linear decay estimates can be combined with "abstract Strichartz" estimates for the free wave equation to prove corresponding estimates for the perturbed wave equation when $n\ge3$. As we shall see, we are only partially successful in the latter endeavor when the dimension is equal to two, and therefore, at present, our applications to nonlinear wave equations in this case are limited.

Strichartz estimates for the wave equation on manifolds with boundary

We prove certain mixed-norm Strichartz estimates on manifolds with boundary. Using them we are able to prove new results for the critical and subcritical wave equation in 4-dimensions with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We obtain global existence in the subcricital case, as well as global existence for the critical equation with small data. We also can use our Strichartz estimates to prove scattering results for the critical wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in 3-dimensions.

Concerning the Strauss conjecture and almost global existence for nonlinear Dirichlet-wave equations in 4-dimensions

We show the obstacle version of the Strauss conjecture holds when the spatial dimension is equal to 4. We also show that an almost global existence theorem of Hörmander for (4+1)-dimensional Minkowski space holds in the obstacle setting. We use weighed space-time variants of the energy inequality and a variant of the classical Hardy inequality.

On the $L^p$ norm of spectral clusters for compact manifolds with boundary

We use microlocal and paradifferential techniques to obtain $L^8$ norm bounds for spectral clusters associated to elliptic second order operators on two-dimensional manifolds with boundary. The result leads to optimal $L^q$ bounds, in the range $2\le q\le\infty$, for $L^2$-normalized spectral clusters on bounded domains in the plane and, more generally, for two-dimensional compact manifolds with boundary. We also establish new sharp $L^q$ estimates in higher dimensions for a range of exponents $\bar{q}_n\le q\le \infty$.

Riemannian manifolds with maximal eigenfunction growth

On any compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ of dimension $n$, the $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions $\{ϕ_λ\}$ satisfy $||ϕ_λ||_{\infty} \leq C λ^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ.$ The bound is sharp in the class of all $(M, g)$ since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard $n$-sphere $S^n$. Our main result is that such an $(M, g)$ must have a point $x$ where the set ${\mathcal L}_x$ of geodesic loops at $x$ has positive measure in $S^*_x M$. We show that if $(M, g)$ is real analytic, this puts topological restrictions on $M$, e.g. only $M = S^2$ (topologically) in dimension 2 can possess a real analytic metric of maximal eigenfunction growth. We further show that generic metrics on any $M$ fail to have maximal eigenfunction growth. In addition, we construct an example of $(M, g)$ for which ${\mathcal L}_x$ has positive measure for an open set of $x$ but which does not have maximal eigenfunction growth, thus disproving a naive converse to the main result.
