$L^{p}$ Positivity Preserving and a conjecture by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin

In this paper we prove that a complete Riemannian manifold is $L^p$-positivity preserving for any $p\in(1,\infty)$. This means that any $L^p$ function which solves $(-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0$ in the sense of distributions is necessarily non-negative. In particular, the case $p=2$ of our result answers in the affermative a conjecture formulated by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin in 2002. The two main ingredients are a new a-priori regularity result for positive subharmonic distributions, which in turn permits to prove a Liouville type theorem, and a Brezis-Kato inequality on Riemannian manifolds. Both these results rely on a smooth monotonic approximation of distributional solutions of $Δu \ge λ(x) u$ of independent interest.

$L^{p}$ gradient estimates and Calderón--Zygmund inequalities under Ricci lower bounds

In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+\infty$ by assuming that the injectivity radius is positive and that the Ricci tensor is either pointwise lower bounded or non-negative in a global integral sense. When $1<p \leq 2$, analogous $L^p$ bounds on even higher order Riesz transforms are obtained provided that also the derivatives of Ricci are controlled up to a suitable order. In the same range of values of $p$, for manifolds with lower Ricci bounds and positive bottom of the spectrum, we show that the $L^{p}$ norm of the Laplacian controls the whole $W^{2,p}$-norm on compactly supported functions.

Gradient estimates under integral Ricci bounds

In this paper we study $W^{1,p}$ global regularity estimates for solutions of $Δu = f$ on Riemannian manifolds. Under integral (lower) bounds on the Ricci tensor we prove the validity of $L^p$-gradient estimates of the form $|| \nabla u ||_{L^p} \le C (|| u ||_{L^p} + || Δu||_{L^p})$. We also construct a counterexample which proves that the previously known constant lower bounds on the Ricci curvature are optimal in the pointwise sense. The relation between $L^p$-gradient estimates and different notions of Sobolev spaces is also investigated.

Symmetry of solutions of semilinear PDEs on Riemannian domains

This paper deals with symmetry phenomena for solutions of the Dirichlet problem involving semilinear PDEs on Riemannian domains. We shall present a rather general framework where the symmetry problem can be formulated and provide some evidence that this framework is completely natural by pointing out some results for stable solutions. The case of manifolds with density, and corresponding weighted Laplacians, is inserted in the picture from the very beginning.

Qualitative properties of bounded subsolutions of nonlinear PDEs

We study decay and compact support properties of positive and bounded solutions of $Δ_{p} u \geq Λ(u)$ on the exterior of a compact set of a complete manifold with rotationally symmetry. In the same setting, we also give a new characterization of stochastic completeness for the $p$-Laplacian in terms of a global $W^{1,p}$-regularity of such solutions. One of the tools we use is a nonlinear version of the Feller property which we investigate on general Riemannian manifolds and which we establish under integral Ricci curvature conditions.

The Frankel property for self-shrinkers from the viewpoint of elliptic PDE's

We show that two properly embedded self-shrinkers in Euclidean space that are sufficiently separated at infinity must intersect at a finite point. The proof is based on a localized version of the Reilly formula applied to a suitable f-harmonic function with controlled gradient. In the immersed case, a new direct proof of the generalized half-space property is also presented.

The smooth Riemannian extension problem

Given a metrically complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth nonempty boundary and assuming that one of its curvatures is subject to a certain bound, we address the problem of whether it is possibile to realize $(M,g)$ as a domain inside a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold $(M',g')$ without boundary, by preserving the same curvature bounds. In this direction we provide three kind of results: (1) a general existence theorem showing that it is always possible to obtain a geodesically complete Riemannian extension without curvature constraints; (2) various topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian extension with prescribed sectional and Ricci curvature bounds; (3) some existence results of complete Riemannian extensions with sectional and Ricci curvature bounds, mostly in the presence of a convexity condition on the boundary.

Curvature estimates for submanifolds immersed into horoballs and horocylinders

We prove mean curvature estimates and a Jorge-Koutroufiotis type theorem for submanifolds confined into either a horocylinder of N X L or a horoball of N, where N is a Cartan-Hadamard manifold with pinched curvature. Thus, these submanifolds behave in many respects like submanifolds immersed into compact balls and into cylinders over compact balls. The proofs rely on the Hessian comparison theorem for the Busemann function.

On the homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps

In this two papers we deal with the relative homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps from compact manifolds with boundary to manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature. Notably, we give a complete solution to the problem in case the target manifold is either compact and a new proof in case it is rotationally symmetric or two dimensional and simply connected. The proof of the compact case uses some ideas of White to define the relative d-homotopy type of Sobolev maps, and the regularity theory by Hardt and Lin. To deal with non-compact targets we introduce a periodization procedure which permits to reduce the problem to the previous one. Also, a general uniqueness result is given.

The Calderón-Zygmund inequality and Sobolev spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds

We introduce the concept of Calderón-Zygmund inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. For $1<p<\infty$, these are inequalities of the form $$ \left\Vert \mathrm{Hess}\left( u\right) \right\Vert _{L^p}\leq C_{1}\left\Vert u\right\Vert _{L^p}+C_{2}\left\Vert Δu\right\Vert _{L^p}, $$ valid a priori for all smooth functions $u$ with compact support, and constants $C_1\geq 0$, $C_2>0$. Such an inequality can hold or fail, depending on the underlying Riemannian geometry. After establishing some generally valid facts and consequences of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality (like new denseness results for second order $\mathsf{L}^p$-Sobolev spaces and gradient estimates), we establish sufficient geometric criteria for the validity of these inequalities on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds. These results in particular apply to many noncompact hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature.

Global maximum principles and divergence theorems on complete manifolds with boundary

In this paper we extend to non-compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary the use of two important tools in the geometric analysis of compact spaces, namely, the weak maximum principle for subharmonic functions and the integration by parts. The first one is a new form of the classical Ahlfors maximum principle whereas the second one is a version for manifolds with boundary of the so called Kelvin-Nevanlinna-Royden criterion of parabolicity. In fact, we will show that the validity of non-compact versions of these tools serve as a characterization of the Neumann parabolicity of the space. The motivation underlying this study is to obtain new information on the geometry of graphs with prescribed mean curvature inside a Riemannian product of the type $N\times\mathbb{R}$. In this direction two kind of results will be presented: height estimates for constant mean curvature graphs parametrized over unbounded domains in a complete manifold and slice type results for graphs whose superlevel sets have finite volume.

Spectral, stochastic and curvature estimates for submanifolds of highly negative curved spaces

We prove spectral, stochastic and mean curvature estimates for complete $m$-submanifolds $φ\colon M \to N$ of $n$-manifolds with a pole $N$ in terms of the comparison isoperimetric ratio $I_{m}$ and the extrinsic radius $r_φ\leq \infty$. Our proof holds for the bounded case $r_φ< \infty$, recovering the known results, as well as for the unbounded case $r_φ=\infty$. In both cases, the fundamental ingredient in these estimates is the integrability over $(0, r_φ)$ of the inverse $I_{m}^{-1}$ of the comparison isoperimetric radius. When $r_φ=\infty$, this condition is guaranteed if $N$ is highly negatively curved.

The connectivity at infinity of a manifold and $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequalities

The purpose of this paper is to give a self-contained proof that a complete manifold with more than one end never supports an $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequality ($2 \leq p$, $q\leq p^{*}$), provided the negative part of its Ricci tensor is small (in a suitable spectral sense). In the route, we discuss potential theoretic properties of the ends of a manifold enjoying an $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequality.

Spectral and stochastic properties of the $f$-Laplacian, solutions of PDE's at infinity, and geometric applications

The aim of this paper is to suggest a new viewpoint to study qualitative properties of solutions of semilinear elliptic PDE's defined outside a compact set. The relevant tools come from spectral theory and from a combination of stochastic properties of the relevant differential operators. Possible links between spectral and stochastic properties are analyzed in detail.

Remarks on $L^{p}$-vanishing results in geometric analysis

We survey some $L^{p}$-vanishing results for solutions of Bochner or Simons type equations with refined Kato inequalities, under spectral assumptions on the relevant Schrödinger operators. New aspects are included in the picture. In particular, an abstract version of a structure theorem for stable minimal hypersurfaces of finite total curvature is observed. Further geometric applications are discussed.

The Feller property on Riemannian manifolds

The asymptotic behavior of the heat kernel of a Riemannian manifold gives rise to the classical concepts of parabolicity, stochastic completeness (or conservative property) and Feller property (or $C^{0}$-diffusion property). Both parabolicity and stochastic completeness have been the subject of a systematic study which led to discovering not only sharp geometric conditions for their validity but also an incredible rich family of tools, techniques and equivalent concepts ranging from maximum principles at infinity, function theoretic tests (Khas'minskii criterion), comparison techniques etc... The present paper aims to move a number of steps forward in the development of a similar apparatus for the Feller property.
