$L^{p}$ Positivity Preserving and a conjecture by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin

In this paper we prove that a complete Riemannian manifold is $L^p$-positivity preserving for any $p\in(1,\infty)$. This means that any $L^p$ function which solves $(-Δ+ 1)u\ge 0$ in the sense of distributions is necessarily non-negative. In particular, the case $p=2$ of our result answers in the affermative a conjecture formulated by M. Braverman, O. Milatovic and M. Shubin in 2002. The two main ingredients are a new a-priori regularity result for positive subharmonic distributions, which in turn permits to prove a Liouville type theorem, and a Brezis-Kato inequality on Riemannian manifolds. Both these results rely on a smooth monotonic approximation of distributional solutions of $Δu \ge λ(x) u$ of independent interest.

$L^{p}$ gradient estimates and Calderón--Zygmund inequalities under Ricci lower bounds

In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+\infty$ by assuming that the injectivity radius is positive and that the Ricci tensor is either pointwise lower bounded or non-negative in a global integral sense. When $1<p \leq 2$, analogous $L^p$ bounds on even higher order Riesz transforms are obtained provided that also the derivatives of Ricci are controlled up to a suitable order. In the same range of values of $p$, for manifolds with lower Ricci bounds and positive bottom of the spectrum, we show that the $L^{p}$ norm of the Laplacian controls the whole $W^{2,p}$-norm on compactly supported functions.

Gradient estimates under integral Ricci bounds

In this paper we study $W^{1,p}$ global regularity estimates for solutions of $Δu = f$ on Riemannian manifolds. Under integral (lower) bounds on the Ricci tensor we prove the validity of $L^p$-gradient estimates of the form $|| \nabla u ||_{L^p} \le C (|| u ||_{L^p} + || Δu||_{L^p})$. We also construct a counterexample which proves that the previously known constant lower bounds on the Ricci curvature are optimal in the pointwise sense. The relation between $L^p$-gradient estimates and different notions of Sobolev spaces is also investigated.

Local Riesz transform and local Hardy spaces on Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry

We prove that if $τ$ is a large positive number, then the atomic Goldberg-type space $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ and the space $\mathfrak{h}_{\mathcal R_τ}^1(N)$ of all integrable functions on $N$ whose local Riesz transform $\mathcal R_τ$ is integrable are the same space on any complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $N$ with Ricci curvature bounded from below and positive injectivity radius. We also relate $\mathfrak{h}^1(N)$ to a space of harmonic functions on the slice $N\times (0,δ)$ for $δ>0$ small enough.

Quantitative regularity for p-harmonic maps

In this article, we study the regularity of minimizing and stationary $p$-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. The aim is obtaining Minkowski-type volume estimates on the singular set $S(f)=\{x \ \ s.t. \ \ f \text{ is not continuous at } x\}$, as opposed to the weaker and non quantitative Hausdorff dimension bounds currently available in literature for generic $p$. The main technique used in this paper is the quantitative stratification, which is based on the study of the approximate symmetries of the tangent maps of $f$. In this article, we generalize the study carried out in \cite{ChNa2} for minimizing $2$-harmonic maps to generic $p\in (1,\infty)$. Moreover, we analyze also the stationary case where the lack of compactness makes the study more complicated. In order to understand the degeneracy intrinsic in the behaviour of stationary maps, we study the defect measure naturally associated to a sequence of such maps and generalize the results obtained in \cite{lin_stat}. By using refined covering arguments, we also improve the estimates in the case of isolated singularities and obtain a definite bound on the number of singular points. This result seems to be new even for minimizing $2$-harmonic maps.

The smooth Riemannian extension problem

Given a metrically complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth nonempty boundary and assuming that one of its curvatures is subject to a certain bound, we address the problem of whether it is possibile to realize $(M,g)$ as a domain inside a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold $(M',g')$ without boundary, by preserving the same curvature bounds. In this direction we provide three kind of results: (1) a general existence theorem showing that it is always possible to obtain a geodesically complete Riemannian extension without curvature constraints; (2) various topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian extension with prescribed sectional and Ricci curvature bounds; (3) some existence results of complete Riemannian extensions with sectional and Ricci curvature bounds, mostly in the presence of a convexity condition on the boundary.

Hyperbolization of cusps with convex boundary

We prove that for every metric on the torus with curvature bounded from below by -1 in the sense of Alexandrov there exists a hyperbolic cusp with convex boundary such that the induced metric on the boundary is the given metric. The proof is by polyhedral approximation. This was the last open case of a general theorem: every metric with curvature bounded from below on a compact surface is isometric to a convex surface in a 3-dimensional space form.

Lorentzian area measures and the Christoffel problem

We introduce a particular class of unbounded closed convex sets of $\R^{d+1}$, called F-convex sets (F stands for future). To define them, we use the Minkowski bilinear form of signature $(+,...,+,-)$ instead of the usual scalar product, and we ask the Gauss map to be a surjection onto the hyperbolic space $\H^d$. Important examples are embeddings of the universal cover of so-called globally hyperbolic maximal flat Lorentzian manifolds. Basic tools are first derived, similarly to the classical study of convex bodies. For example, F-convex sets are determined by their support function, which is defined on $\H^d$. Then the area measures of order $i$, $0\leq i\leq d$ are defined. As in the convex bodies case, they are the coefficients of the polynomial in $ε$ which is the volume of an $ε$ approximation of the convex set. Here the area measures are defined with respect to the Lorentzian structure. Then we focus on the area measure of order one. Finding necessary and sufficient conditions for a measure (here on $\H^d$) to be the first area measure of a F-convex set is the Christoffel Problem. We derive many results about this problem. If we restrict to "Fuchsian" F-convex set (those who are invariant under linear isometries acting cocompactly on $\H^d$), then the problem is totally solved, analogously to the case of convex bodies. In this case the measure can be given on a compact hyperbolic manifold. Particular attention is given on the smooth and polyhedral cases. In those cases, the Christoffel problem is equivalent to prescribing the mean radius of curvature and the edge lengths respectively.

On the homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps

In this two papers we deal with the relative homotopy Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps from compact manifolds with boundary to manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature. Notably, we give a complete solution to the problem in case the target manifold is either compact and a new proof in case it is rotationally symmetric or two dimensional and simply connected. The proof of the compact case uses some ideas of White to define the relative d-homotopy type of Sobolev maps, and the regularity theory by Hardt and Lin. To deal with non-compact targets we introduce a periodization procedure which permits to reduce the problem to the previous one. Also, a general uniqueness result is given.

Remarks on $L^{p}$-vanishing results in geometric analysis

We survey some $L^{p}$-vanishing results for solutions of Bochner or Simons type equations with refined Kato inequalities, under spectral assumptions on the relevant Schrödinger operators. New aspects are included in the picture. In particular, an abstract version of a structure theorem for stable minimal hypersurfaces of finite total curvature is observed. Further geometric applications are discussed.

A general comparison theorem for $p$-harmonic maps in homotopy class

We prove a general comparison result for homotopic finite $p$-energy $C^{1}$ $p$-harmonic maps $u,v:M\to N$ between Riemannian manifolds, assuming that $M$ is $p$-parabolic and $N$ is complete and non-positively curved. In particular, we construct a homotopy through constant $p$-energy maps, which turn out to be $p$-harmonic when $N$ is compact. Moreover, we obtain uniqueness in the case of negatively curved $N$. This generalizes a well known result in the harmonic setting due to R. Schoen and S.T. Yau.

Myers' type theorems and some related oscillation results

In this paper we study the behavior of solutions of a second order differential equation. The existence of a zero and its localization allow us to get some compactness results. In particular we obtain a Myers' type theorem even in the presence of an amount of negative curvature. The technique we use also applies to the study of spectral properties of Schroedinger operators on complete manifolds.
