Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces from pairing of emergent $j=3/2$ fermions on the pyrochlore lattice

We examine the appearance of superconductivity in the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard model on the pyrochlore lattice. We focus upon the limit of half filling, where the normal-state band structure realizes a $j=3/2$ semimetal. Introducing doping, we show that the pairing is favored in a $J=2$ quintet $E_g$ state. The attractive interaction in this channel relies on the fact that $E_g$ pairing on the pyrochlore lattice avoids the detrimental on-site repulsion. Our calculations show that a time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconducting phase is favored, which displays Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces.

Magnetic Response of Majorana Kramers Pairs Protected by Z2 Invariants

On the surface of time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, Kramers pairs of Majorana fermions with chiral and crystalline symmetries exhibit completely uniaxial or octupole anisotropic magnetic response. This paper reports possible types of magnetic responses of Majorana Kramers pairs with one-dimensional Z2 invariants defined by crystalline symmetry. In particular, the general theory predicts a new type of magnetic response where two Majorana Kramers pairs associated with the Z2 invariant show biaxially (quadrupolar) anisotropic magnetic response, which is a novel type of response that is rarely observed in conventional and Majorana fermions.

Nodal Andreev Spectra in Multi-Majorana Three-Terminal Josephson Junctions

We investigate the Andreev-bound-state (ABS) spectra of three-terminal Josephson junctions which consist of 1D topological superconductors (TSCs) harboring multiple zero-energy edge Majorana bound states (MBSs) protected by chiral symmetry. Our theoretical analysis relies on the exact numerical diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian describing the three interfaced TSCs, complemented by an effective low-energy description solely based on the coupling of the interfacial MBSs arising before the leads get contacted. Considering the 2D synthetic space spanned by the two independent superconducting phase differences, we demonstrate that the ABS spectra may contain either point or line nodes, and identify $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariants to classify them. We show that the resulting type of nodes depends on the number of preexisting interfacial MBSs, with nodal lines necessarily appearing when two TSCs harbor an unequal number of MBSs. Specifically, the precise number of interfacial MBSs determines the periodicity of the spectrum under $2π$-slidings of the phase differences and, as a result, also controls the shape of the nodal lines in synthetic space. When chiral symmetry is preserved, the lines are open and coincide with high-symmetry lines of synthetic space, while when it is violated the lines can also transform into loops and chains. The nodal spectra are robust by virtue of the inherent particle-hole symmetry of the BdG Hamiltonian, and give rise to distinctive experimental signatures that we identify.

Generalized Berry phase for a bosonic Bogoliubov system with exceptional points

We discuss the topology of Bogoliubov excitation bands from a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Since the Bogoliubov equation for a bosonic system is non-Hermitian, complex eigenvalues often appear and induce dynamical instability. As a function of momentum, the onset of appearance and disappearance of complex eigenvalues is an exceptional point (EP), which is a point where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable and hence the Berry connection and curvature are ill-defined, preventing defining topological invariants. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to remove EPs from the Brillouin zone by introducing an imaginary part of the momentum. We then define the Berry phase for a one-dimensional bosonic Bogoliubov system. Extending the argument for Hermitian systems, the Berry phase for an inversion-symmetric system is shown to be $Z_2$. As concrete examples, we numerically investigate two toy models and confirm the bulk-edge correspondence even in the presence of complex eigenvalues. The $Z_2$ invariant associated with particle-hole symmetry and the winding number for a time-reversal-symmetric system are also discussed.

Superconductivity in doped Dirac semimetals

We theoretically study intrinsic superconductivity in doped Dirac semimetals. Dirac semimetals host bulk Dirac points, which are formed by doubly degenerate bands, so the Hamiltonian is described by a $4 \times 4$ matrix and six types of $k$-independent pair potentials are allowed by the Fermi-Dirac statistics. We show that the unique spin-orbit coupling leads to characteristic superconducting gap structures and $d$ vectors on the Fermi surface and the electron-electron interaction between intra and interorbitals gives a novel phase diagram of superconductivity. It is found that when the inter-orbital attraction is dominant, an unconventional superconducting state with point nodes appears. To verify the experimental signature of possible superconducting states, we calculate the temperature dependence of bulk physical properties such as electronic specific heat and spin susceptibility and surface state. In the unconventional superconducting phase, either dispersive or flat Andreev bound states appear between point nodes, which leads to double peaks or single peak in the surface density of states, respectively. As a result, possible superconducting states can be distinguished by combining bulk and surface measurements.

Topologically stable gapless phases in nonsymmorphic superconductors

We study topological stability of nodes in nonsymmorphic superconductors (SCs). In particular, we demonstrate that line nodes in nonsymmirphic odd-parity SCs are protected by the interplay between topology and nonsymmorphic symmetry. As an example, it is shown that the $E_{2u}$-superconducting state of UPt$_3$ hosts the topologically stable line node at the Brillouin zone face. Our theory indicates that the existence of spin-orbit coupling is essential for protecting such a line node, complementing the Norman's group theory argument. Developing the topological arguments, we also argue generalization to point nodes and to other symmetry cases beyond the group theory arguments.

Fragile surface zero-energy flat bands in three-dimensional chiral superconductors

We study surface zero-energy flat bands in three-dimensional chiral superconductors with $p_z (p_x +ip_y)^ν$-wave pairing symmetry ($ν$ is a nonzero integer), based on topological numbers and tunneling conductance. It is shown that the surface flat bands are fragile against (i) the misorientation angle and (ii) surface Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The fragility of (i) is specific to chiral SCs, whereas that of (ii) happens for general odd-parity SCs. We demonstrate that these flat band instabilities vanish or suppress a zero-bias conductance peak in a normal/insulator/superconductor junction, which behavior is clearly different from high-$T_c$ cuprates and noncentrosymmetric superconductors. By calculating the angle resolved conductance, we also discuss a topological surface state associated with the coexistence of line and point nodes.

Theory of tunneling conductance of anomalous Rashba metal / superconductor junctions

We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For the ARM/spin-singlet superconductor junctions, the obtained tunneling conductance within the bulk energy gap is enhanced with the increase in the magnitude of the RSOI. In particular, in ARM/$d_{xy}$-wave superconductor junctions, the zero bias conductance peak is enhanced owing to the presence of the RSOI. For ARM/$p_{x}$-wave superconductor junctions, the condition of the existence of the zero bias conductance peak is significantly sensitive to the direction of the d-vector of the $p_{x}$-wave superconductor. Furthermore, the obtained conductance in ARM/chiral $p$-wave superconductor junctions shows different behaviors as compared to those in ARM/helical $p$-wave superconductor junctions. This feature gives a guide to determine the spin structure of the Cooper pair in spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Topological superconductivity in Dirac semimetals

Dirac semimetals host bulk band-touching Dirac points and a surface Fermi loop. We develop a theory of superconducting Dirac semimetals. Establishing a relation between the Dirac points and the surface Fermi loop, we clarify how the nontrivial topology of Dirac semimetals affects their superconducting state. We note that the unique orbital texture of Dirac points and a structural phase transition of the crystal favor symmetry-protected topological superconductivity with a quartet of surface Majorana fermions. We suggest possible application of our theory to recently discovered superconducting states in Cd$_3$As$_2$.

Topological Blount's theorem of odd-parity superconductors

From the group theoretical ground, the Blount's theorem prohibits the existence of line nodes for odd-parity superconductors (SCs) in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We study the topological stability of line nodes under inversion symmetry. From the topological point of view, we renovate the stability condition of line nodes, in which we not only generalize the original statement, but also establish the relation to zero-energy surface flat dispersions. The topological instability of line nodes in odd-parity SCs implies not the absence of bulk line nodes but the disappearance of the corresponding zero-energy surface flat dispersions due to surface Rashba SOC, which gives an experimental means to distinguish line nodes in odd-parity SCs from those in other SCs.

Topological influence and back-action between topological excitations

Topological objects can influence each other if the underlying homotopy groups are non-Abelian. Under such circumstances, the topological charge of each individual object is no longer a conserved quantity and can be transformed to each other. Yet, we can identify the conservation law by considering the back-action of topological influence. We develop a general theory of topological influence and back-action based on the commutators of the underlying homotopy groups. We illustrate the case of the topological influence of a half-quantum vortex on the sign change of a point defect and point out that the topological back-action from the point defect is such twisting of the vortex that the total twist of the vortex line carries the change in the point-defect charge to conserve the total charge. We use this theory to classify charge transfers in condensed matter systems and show that a non-Abelian charge transfer can be realized in a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate.

Gauge-spin-space rotation invariant vortices in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We revisit ground states of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that votices show up as a direct consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking into a combined gauge, spin, and space rotation symmetry, which determines the vortex-core spin state at the rotating center. For the continuous combined symmetry, the total spin rotation about the rotating axis is restricted to $2π$, whereas for the discrete combined symmetry, we further need 2F quantum numbers to characterize the total spin rotation for the spin-$F$ system. For lattice phases we find that in the ground state the topological charge for each unit cell vanishes. However, we find two types of highly symmetric lattices with a nontrivial topological charge in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system based on the symmetry classification, and show that they are skyrmion crystals.

Topological classification of vortex-core structures of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We classify vortex-core structures according to the topology of the order parameter space. By developing a method to characterize how the order parameter changes inside the vortex core. We apply this method to the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the vortex-core structures are classified by winding numbers that are locally defined in the core region. We also show that a vortex-core structure with a nontrivial winding number can be stabilized under a negative quadratic Zeeman effect.

Abe homotopy classification of topological excitations under the topological influence of vortices

Topological excitations are usually classified by the $n$th homotopy group $π_n$. However, for topological excitations that coexist with vortices, there are case in which an element of $π_n$ cannot properly describe the charge of a topological excitation due to the influence of the vortices. This is because an element of $π_n$ corresponding to the charge of a topological excitation may change when the topological excitation circumnavigates a vortex. This phenomenon is referred to as the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$. In this paper, we show that topological excitations coexisting with vortices are classified by the Abe homotopy group $κ_n$. The $n$th Abe homotopy group $κ_n$ is defined as a semi-direct product of $π_1$ and $π_n$. In this framework, the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$ is understood as originating from noncommutativity between $π_1$ and $π_n$. We show that a physical charge of a topological excitation can be described in terms of the conjugacy class of the Abe homotopy group. Moreover, the Abe homotopy group naturally describes vortex-pair creation and annihilation processes, which also influence topological excitations. We calculate the influence of vortices on topological excitations for the case in which the order parameter manifold is $S^n/K$, where $S^n$ is an $n$-dimensional sphere and $K$ is a discrete subgroup of $SO(n+1)$. We show that the influence of vortices on a topological excitation exists only if $n$ is even and $K$ includes a nontrivial element of $O(n)/SO(n)$.
