Identifying Majorana bound states at quantum spin Hall edges using a metallic probe

We study the conductance afforded by a normal-metal probe which is directly contacting the helical edge modes of a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI). We show a $2e^2/h$ conductance peak at zero temperature in QSHI-based superconductor--ferromagnet hybrids due to the formation of a single Majorana bound state (MBS). In a corresponding Josephson junction hosting a pair of MBSs, a $4e^2/h$ conductance peak is found at zero temperature. The conductance quantization is robust to changes of the relevant system parameters and, remarkably, remains unaltered with increasing the distance between probe and MBSs. In the low temperature limit, the conductance peak is robust as the probe is placed within the localization length of MBSs. Our findings can therefore provide an effective way to detect the existence of MBSs in QSHI systems.

Odd-frequency pairing in a nonunitary p-wave superconductor with multiple Majorana fermions

Odd-frequency Cooper pairs are gathering attention for the convenience of investigating the edge state of topological superconductors including Majorana fermions. Although a spinless p-wave superconductor has only one Majorana fermion in a topological phase, the system with magnetic fields can reach the topological phases with multiple Majorana fermions. To distinguish these multiple Majorana fermion phases, we correlate the energy spectrum with the odd-frequency pair amplitude as increasing the system size. The system size dependence tells us three pieces of information: the parity of the number of the Majorana fermions at the edge, the number of low-energy modes corresponding to the Majorana fermions with different localization lengths, and the fingerprints of the Majorana fermions. Also, we present the spatial dependence of the odd-frequency f vector that is created from odd-frequency pair amplitude and the spin structure of odd-frequency Cooper pairs. We find that the odd-frequency f vector is fixed in the same direction in any topological phase. Also, we show that the spin state of odd-frequency Cooper pairs tends to be oriented toward the direction of the magnetic fields. Our results highlight the odd-frequency Cooper pairs can be a good indicator for the detection of the multiple Majorana fermions and the distinction among the topological phases.

Surface State of Inter-orbital Pairing State in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ Superconductor

We study the (001) surface state of a recently proposed $E_g$ symmetry inter-orbital-odd spin-triplet s-wave superconducting (SC) state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ (SRO). We confirm that this pair potential is transformed into a chiral $d$-wave pair potential and a pseudo-Zeeman field in the band basis for a low-energy range. Due to the chiral $d$-wave pair potential, the surface states appear near zero energy in the momentum range enclosed by the nodal lines of the chiral d-wave pair potential for each band at the (001) surface. Nevertheless, the pseudo-Zeeman field gives band splitting of the surface states, and its splitting energy is much smaller than the SC energy gap. The local density of states (LDOS) at the (001) surface of the SC state has a pronounced peak structure at zero energy due to the surface states near zero energy when the order of the resolution is lower than the splitting energy. This peak structure is robust under perturbations, such as an orbital Rashba coupling or an $E_u$ SC pair potential at the surface.

Theory of proximity effect in $s+p$-wave superconductor junctions

We derive a boundary condition for the Nambu Keldysh Green's function in diffusive normal metal / unconventional superconductor junctions applicable for mixed parity pairing. Applying this theory to a 1d model of $s+p$-wave superconductor, we calculate LDOS in DN and charge conductance of DN / $s+p$-wave superconductor junctions. When the $s$-wave component of the pair potential is dominant, LDOS has a gap like structure at zero energy and the dominant pairing in DN is even-frequency spin-singlet $s$-wave. On the other hand, when the $p$-wave component is dominant, the resulting LDOS has a zero energy peak and the dominant pairing in DN is odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave. We show the robustness of the quantization of the conductance when the magnitude of $p$-wave component of the pair potential is larger than that of $s$-wave one. These results show the robustness of the anomalous proximity effect specific to spin-triplet superconductor junctions.

Vortex supercurrent inversion by frequency-symmetry conversion of Cooper pairs

We theoretically demonstrate that the vortex supercurrent can be reversed by odd-frequency Cooper pairs accompanied by surface Andreev bound states. The surface of a three-dimensional superconductor pierced by a flux quantum is considered. We compare the vortex supercurrents near the surface of the spin-singlet $s$-wave and spin-triplet $p_z$-wave superconductors using quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, where the surface is perpendicular to the $z$ direction. We demonstrate that the vortex supercurrent near the surface of a $p_z$-wave superconductor is reversed compared to those far from the surface, whereas that of an $s$-wave superconductor is not. The splitting of the zero-energy states caused by the interference of the surface Andreev bound states and Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon modes is demonstrated.

Thermoelectric detection of Andreev states in unconventional superconductors

We theoretically describe a thermoelectric effect that is entirely due to Andreev processes involving the formation of Cooper pairs through the coupling of electrons and holes. The Andreev thermoelectric effect can occur in ballistic ferromagnet-superconductor junctions with a dominant superconducting proximity effect on the ferromagnet, and it is very sensitive to surface states emerging in unconventional superconductors. We consider hybrid junctions in two and three dimensions to demonstrate that the thermoelectric current is always reversed in the presence of low-energy Andreev bound states at the superconductor surface. A microscopic analysis of the proximity-induced pairing reveals that the thermoelectric effect only arises if even and odd-frequency Cooper pairs coexist in mixed singlet and triplet states. Our results are an example of the richness of emergent phenomena in systems that combine magnetism and superconductivity, and they open a pathway for exploring exotic surface states in unconventional superconductors.

Anomalous inverse proximity effect in unconventional-superconductor junctions

We investigate the effects of Andreev bound states due to the unconventional pairing on the inverse proximity effect of ferromagnet/superconductor junctions. Utilizing quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the magnetization penetrating into the superconductor. We show that in a wide parameter range the direction of the induced magnetization is determined by two factors: whether Andreev bound states are present at the junction interface and the sign of the spin-mixing angle. In particular, when Andreev bound states appear at the interface, the direction of the induced magnetization is opposite to that without Andreev bound states. We also clarify the conditions under which the inverted induced magnetization appears. Applying this novel effect helps distinguishing the pairing symmetry of a superconductor.

Bulk odd-frequency pairing in the superconducting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model describes fermions that hop on a one-dimensional chain with staggered hopping amplitude, where the unit cell contains two sites, or two sublattices. In this work we consider the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with superconducting pairing and show that the sublattice index acts as an additional quantum number in the classification of Cooper pairs, giving rise to inter- and intra-sublattice odd-frequency pair correlations in the bulk. Interestingly, this system behaves as a two band superconductor where the bulk odd-frequency correlations depend solely on the intrinsic staggering properties of the model. In general, odd-frequency correlations coexist with even-frequency correlations in both the trivial and topological phases, with comparable and even larger odd-frequency amplitudes at the topological phase transition points at low frequencies, due to the closing of the energy gap at these points. Furthermore, we also discuss how bulk odd-frequency amplitudes are correlated with pseudo-gaps in the density of states and also with a charge density wave that appears due to the chemical potential imbalance between sublattices.

Identifying possible pairing states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by tunneling spectroscopy

We examine the tunneling spectroscopy of three-dimensional normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions as an experimental means to identify pairing symmetry in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, we consider three different possible pairing states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: spin-singlet chiral $d$-wave, spin-triplet helical $p$-wave, and spin-nematic $f$-wave ones, all of which are consistent with recent nuclear-magnetic-resonance experiments [A. Pustogow et al., Nature 574, 72 (2019)]. The Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory is employed to calculate the tunneling conductance, and the cylindrical two-dimensional Fermi surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is properly taken into account as an anisotropic effective mass and a cutoff in the momentum integration. It is pointed out that the chiral $d$-wave pairing state is inconsistent with previous tunneling conductance experiments along the $c$-axis. We also find that the remaining candidates, the spin-triplet helical $p$-wave pairing state and the spin-nematic $f$-wave ones, can be distinguished from each other by the in-plane tunneling spectroscopy along the $a$- and $b$-axes.

Impact of impurity scattering on odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing near the edge of the Kitaev chain

We study a Kitaev chain model, which is the simplest model of topological superconductors hosting Majorana fermion, appearing as a zero-energy state at the edge. We analytically calculate the Green's function of the semi-infinite Kitaev chain with a delta-function-type impurity potential within the quasi-classical regime to obtain the spatial dependence of the induced odd-frequency pairing. It is found that if the position of the impurity is not far from the edge, the spatial profile of the local density of states (LDOS) and the odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave pair amplitude is tunable as a function of the strength of the impurity potential. Moreover, the zero-energy LDOS and low-frequency odd-frequency pair amplitude are found to have the same spatial dependence. The spatial profile of the zero-energy LDOS is analyzed based on the wave function of Majorana fermions.

Odd-frequency pairing and proximity effect in Kitaev chain systems including topological critical point

In this paper, we investigate the relation between odd-frequency pairing and proximity effect in non-uniform Kitaev chain systems with a particular interest in the topological critical point. First, we correlate the odd-frequency pairing and Majorana fermion in a semi-infinite Kitaev chain, where we find that the spatial dependence of the odd-frequency pair amplitude coincides with that of the local density of states at low frequencies. Second, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard view, the odd-frequency pair amplitude spreads into the bulk of a semi-infinite Kitaev chain at the topological critical point. Finally, we show that odd-frequency Cooper pairs cause the proximity effect in a normal metal/diffusive normal metal/ Kitaev chain junction even at the topological critical point. Our results hold relevance to the investigation of odd-frequency pairing and topological superconductivity in more complicated systems that involve Rashba nanowire with magnetic fields.

Spin Hall conductivity in topological Dirac semimetals

We theoretically investigate the spin Hall conductivity (SHC) in topological Dirac semimetals (TDSMs) whose Dirac points are protected by rotational symmetry. On the basis of a general phase diagram of the system with time-reversal, inversion and four-fold rotational symmetries, we reveal that the SHC is sensitive to the phase to which the system belong. The phase and the SHC are characterized by the mirror Chern numbers and the presence or absence of gapless bulk Dirac points. It is also found that the representative TDSM Cd$_3$As$_2$ supports a large and negative SHC $σ_{xy}^z\sim -10^4 (\hbar/e) (Ω.\textrm{m})^{-1}$. The principle behind the dependency of SHC on the phase diagram is also explained.

Theory of Tunneling Effect in 1D AIII-class Topological Insulator (Nanowire) Proximity Coupled with a Superconductor

We study the tunneling effect in an AIII-class insulator proximity coupled with a spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor, in which three phases are characterized by the integer topological invariant $\mathcal{N}$. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation explicitly, we analytically obtain a normal reflection coefficient $R_{σσ'}$ and an Andreev reflection coefficient $A_{σσ'}$, and derive a charge conductance formula, where $σ(σ')$ is the spin index of a reflected (injected) wave. The resulting conductance indicates a wide variety of line shapes: (i)gap structure without coherence peaks for $\mathcal{N}=0$, (ii)quantized zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) with height $2e^{2}/h$ for $\mathcal{N}=1$, and (iii)ZBCP spitting for $\mathcal{N}=2$. At zero bias voltage $eV=0$, $\sum_{σσ'} R_{σσ'} = \sum_{σσ'} A_{σσ'}$ is satisfied and the spin direction of an injected electron is rotated at approximately $90^\circ$ for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ state. Meanwhile, $A_{σσ'}=0$ is satisfied for the $\mathcal{N}=2$ state, and the spin rotation angle can become $180^\circ$.

Spin-polarized multiple Andreev reflections in spin-split superconductors

We study the transport properties of a voltage biased contact between two spin-split superconductors separated by an insulating barrier of arbitrary transparency. At low transparency, the contribution of multiple Andreev reflections leads to a subharmonic gap structure that crucially depends on the amplitude and relative angle of the spin-splitting fields of each superconductor. For non-collinear fields, we find an interesting even-odd effect on the bound states within the gap, where the odd order multiple Andreev reflections split, but the even order ones remain at their expected positions. By computing the current-voltage characteristics, we determine the transparency required for the emergence of a subharmonic gap structure and show that the splitting of the odd bound states is associated with different threshold energies of spin-polarized Andreev processes. Our findings provide a tool to experimentally determine the amplitude and orientation of Zeeman fields in spin-split superconductors.

All-electrical generation and control of odd-frequency s-wave Cooper pairs in double quantum dots

We propose an all-electrical experimental setup to detect and manipulate the amplitude of odd-frequency pairing in a double quantum dot. Odd-frequency pair amplitude is induced from the breakdown of orbital symmetry when Cooper pairs are injected in the double dot with electrons in different dots. When the dot levels are aligned with the Fermi energy, i.e., on resonance, nonlocal Andreev processes are directly connected to the presence of odd-frequency pairing. Therefore, their amplitude can be manipulated by tuning the level positions. Detection of nonlocal Andreev processes by conductance measurements contributes a direct proof of the existence of odd-frequency pair amplitude and is available using current experimental techniques.

Influence of the impurity scattering on charge transport in unconventional superconductor junctions

We study the influence of non-magnetic impurity scatterings on the tunneling conductance of a junction consisting of a normal metal and a disordered unconventional superconductor by solving the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation self-consistently. We find that the impurity scatterings in both the Born and unitary limits affect the formation of the Andreev bound states and modify strongly the tunneling spectra around zero bias. Our results are interpreted well by the appearance of odd-frequency Cooper pairs near the interface and by the divergent behavior of the impurity self-energy. The present paper provides a useful tool to identify the pairing symmetry of unconventional superconductors in experiments.

Pairing mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in doped Kane-Mele model

We study the pairing symmetry of a doped Kane-Mele model on a honeycomb lattice with on-site Coulomb interaction. The pairing instability of Cooper pair is calculated based on the linearized Eliashberg equation within the random phase approximation (RPA). When the magnitude of the spin-orbit coupling is weak, even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) pairing is dominant. On the other hand, with the increase of the spin-orbit coupling, we show that the even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) f-wave pairing exceeds ESE one. ETO f-wave pairing is supported by the longitudinal spin fluctuation. Since the transverse spin fluctuation is strongly suppressed by spin-orbit coupling, ETO f-wave pairing becomes dominant for large magnitude of spin-orbit coupling.

Photovoltaic Chiral Magnetic Effect

We theoretically predict a generation of a current in Weyl semimetals by applying circularly polarized light. The electric field of the light can drive an effective magnetic field of order of ten Tesla. For lower frequency light, a non-equilibrium spin distribution is formed near the Fermi surface. Due to the spin-momentum locking, a giant electric current proportional to the effective magnetic field is induced. On the other hand, higher frequency light realizes a quasi-static Floquet state with no induced electric current. We discuss relevant materials and estimate order of magnitude of the induced current.

Quantization of Conductance Minimum and Index Theorem

We discuss the minimum value of the zero-bias differential conductance $G_{\textrm{min}}$ in a junction consisting of a normal metal and a nodal superconductor preserving time-reversal symmetry. Using the quasiclassical Green function method, we show that $G_{\textrm{min}}$ is quantized at $ (4e^2/h) N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ in the limit of strong impurity scatterings in the normal metal. The integer $N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ represents the number of perfect transmission channels through the junction. An analysis of the chiral symmetry of the Hamiltonian indicates that $N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ corresponds to the Atiyah-Singer index in mathematics.

Study on Green's function on TI surface

In theory of superconducting junctions, Green's function has an important role to obtain Andreev bound states, local density of states and Josephson current in a systematic way. In this article, we show how to construct Green's function on the surface of topological insulator following McMillan's formalism where the energy spectrum of electrons obeys a linear dispersion. For a model of superconductor (S)/ferromagnet (F)/normal metal (N) junction, we show that the generation of Majorana Fermion gives rise to the enhanced local density of states and pair amplitude of odd-frequency pairing. We also derive an extended Furusaki-Tsukada's formula of d.c. Josephson current in S/F/S junctions. The obtained Josephson current depends on the direction and magnitude of the magnetization.

Superconductivity in doped Dirac semimetals

We theoretically study intrinsic superconductivity in doped Dirac semimetals. Dirac semimetals host bulk Dirac points, which are formed by doubly degenerate bands, so the Hamiltonian is described by a $4 \times 4$ matrix and six types of $k$-independent pair potentials are allowed by the Fermi-Dirac statistics. We show that the unique spin-orbit coupling leads to characteristic superconducting gap structures and $d$ vectors on the Fermi surface and the electron-electron interaction between intra and interorbitals gives a novel phase diagram of superconductivity. It is found that when the inter-orbital attraction is dominant, an unconventional superconducting state with point nodes appears. To verify the experimental signature of possible superconducting states, we calculate the temperature dependence of bulk physical properties such as electronic specific heat and spin susceptibility and surface state. In the unconventional superconducting phase, either dispersive or flat Andreev bound states appear between point nodes, which leads to double peaks or single peak in the surface density of states, respectively. As a result, possible superconducting states can be distinguished by combining bulk and surface measurements.

Tunneling and Josephson effects in odd-frequency superconductor junctions: A study on multi-channel Kondo chain

Junction systems of odd-frequency (OF) superconductors are investigated based on a mean-field Hamiltonian formalism. One-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (TCKL) is taken as a concrete example of OF superconductors. Properties of normal and Andreev reflections are examined in a normal metal/superconductor junction. Unlike conventional superconductors, normal reflection is always present due to the normal self energy that necessarily appears in the present OF pairing state. The conductance reflects the difference between repulsive and attractive potentials located at the interface, which is in contrast with the preexisting superconducting junctions. Josephson junction is also constructed by connecting TCKL with the other types of superconductors. The results can be understood from symmetry of the induced Cooper pairs at the edge in the presence of spin/orbital symmetry breaking. It has also been demonstrated that the symmetry argument for Cooper pairs is useful in explaining Meissner response in bulk.

Anomalous Josephson effect in d-wave superconductor junctions on TI surface

We study Josephson effect of $d$-wave superconductor (DS)/ferromagnet insulator(FI)/DS junctions on a surface of topological insulator (TI). We calculate Josephson current $I\left(φ\right) $ for various orientations of the junctions where $φ$ is the macroscopic phase difference between two DSs. In certain configurations, we find anomalous current-phase relation $I(φ)=-I\left( -φ+π\right)$ with $2π$ periodicity. In the case where the first order Josephson coupling is absent without magnetization in FI, $I(φ)$ can be proportional to $\cos φ$. The magnitude of the obtained Josephson current is enhanced due to the zero energy states on the edge of DS on TI. Even if we introduce an $s$-wave component of pair potential in DS, we can still expect the anomalous current-phase relation in asymmetric DS junctions with $I\left( φ=0\right) \neq 0$. This can be used to probe the induced $d$-wave component of pair potential on TI surface in high-$T_{c}$ cuperate/TI hybrid structures.

Anomalous Proximity Effect and Theoretical Design for its Realization

We discuss the stability of zero-energy states appearing in a dirty normal metal attached to a superconducting thin film with Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman field. The Dresselhaus superconductor preserves an additional chiral symmetry and traps more than one zero-energy state at its edges. All the zero-energy states at an edge belong to the same chirality in large Zeeman field due to the effective $p$-wave pairing symmetry. The pure chiral nature in the wave function enables the penetration of the zero-energy states into the dirty normal metal with keeping their high degree of degeneracy. By applying a theorem, we prove the the perfect Andreev reflection into the dirty normal metal at the zero-energy. This paper gives a microscopic understanding of the anomalous proximity effect.

Fragile surface zero-energy flat bands in three-dimensional chiral superconductors

We study surface zero-energy flat bands in three-dimensional chiral superconductors with $p_z (p_x +ip_y)^ν$-wave pairing symmetry ($ν$ is a nonzero integer), based on topological numbers and tunneling conductance. It is shown that the surface flat bands are fragile against (i) the misorientation angle and (ii) surface Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The fragility of (i) is specific to chiral SCs, whereas that of (ii) happens for general odd-parity SCs. We demonstrate that these flat band instabilities vanish or suppress a zero-bias conductance peak in a normal/insulator/superconductor junction, which behavior is clearly different from high-$T_c$ cuprates and noncentrosymmetric superconductors. By calculating the angle resolved conductance, we also discuss a topological surface state associated with the coexistence of line and point nodes.

Inversion symmetry of Josephson current as test of chiral domain wall motion in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

Clarifying the chiral domains structure of superconducting Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ has been a long-standing issue in identifying its peculiar topological superconducting state. We evaluated the critical current $I_{c}$ versus the magnetic field $H$ of Nb/Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ Josephson junctions, changing the junction dimension in expectation of that the number of domains in the junction is controlled. $I_{c}(H)$ exhibits a recovery from inversion symmetry breaking to invariance when the dimension is reduced to several microns. This inversion invariant behavior indicates the disappearance of domain walls; thus, the size of a single domain is estimated at approximately several microns.

Josephson current in a normal-metal nanowire coupled to superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junction

We consider superconducting nanowire proximity coupled to superconductor / ferromagnet / superconductor junction, where the magnetization penetrates into superconducting segment in nanowire decaying as $\sim\exp[-\frac{\mid n \mid}ξ]$ with site index $n$ and the decay length $ξ$. We tune chemical potential and spin-orbit coupling so that topological superconducting regime hosting Majorana fermion is realized for long $ξ$. We find that when $ξ$ becomes shorter, zero energy state at the interface between superconductor and ferromagnet splits into two away from zero energy. Accordingly, the behavior of Josephson current is drastically changed due to this "zero mode-non-zero mode crossover". By tuning the model parameters, we find an almost second-harmonic current-phase relation, $\sin2φ$, with phase difference $φ$. Based on the analysis of Andreev bound state (ABS), we clarify that current-phase relation is determined by coupling of the states within the energy gap. We find that the emergence of crossing points of ABS is a key ingredient to generate $\sin2φ$ dependence in current-phase relation. We further study both the energy and $φ$ dependence of pair amplitudes in the ferromagnetic region. For long $ξ$, odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave component is dominant. The magnitude of the odd-frequency pair amplitude is enhanced at the energy level of ABS.

Odd-frequency pair in topological superconductivity of 1D magnetic chain

A chain of magnetic atoms with non-collinear spin configuration on a superconductor is a promising new system that can host Majorana Fermions (MFs). In this study, we clarify that in the presence of MFs, an odd-frequency Cooper pair is generated at the edge of the chain. Furthermore, it is revealed that this feature is robust against the distance between magnetic atoms. We also elucidate the close relationship between the pair amplitude of the odd-frequency pair, the parity of the wave function, and the direction of the MF spin. If Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling is included, MFs can be realized even in a collinear alignment of magnetic atoms, $i.e.$, in a ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic chain on a superconductor. Then, the odd-frequency pairing is generated at the edge, similar to the non-collinear case. Based on our results, it can be concluded that the detection of the zero energy peak of the local density of states by scanning tunneling microscopy at the edge of the magnetic chain is strong evidence for the generation of odd-frequency pairing.

Skyrmionic magnetization configurations at chiral magnet/ferromagnet heterostructures

We consider magnetization configurations at chiral magnet (CM)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures. In the CM, magnetic skyrmions and spin helices emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which then penetrate into the adjacent FM. However, because the non-uniform magnetization structures are energetically unfavorable in the FM, the penetrated magnetization structures are deformed, resulting in exotic three-dimensional configurations, such as skyrmion cones, sideways skyrmions, and twisted helices and skyrmions. We discuss the stability of possible magnetization configurations at the CM/FM and CM/FM/CM hybrid structures within the framework of the variational method, and find that various magnetization configurations appear in the ground state, some of which cause nontrivial emergent magnetic field.

Spin and charge transport induced by a twisted light beam on a surface of a topological insulator

We theoretically study spin and charge transport induced by a twisted light beam irradiated on a disordered surface of a doped three dimensional topological insulator (TI). We find that various types of spin vortices are imprinted on the surface of the TI depending on the spin and orbital angular momentum of the incident light. The key mechanism for the appearance of the unconventional spin structure is the spin-momentum locking in the surface state of the TI. Besides, the diffusive transport of electrons under an inhomogeneous electric field causes a gradient of the charge density, which then induces nonlocal charge current and spin density as well as the spin current. We discuss the relation between these quantities within the linear response to the applied electric field using the Keldysh-Green's function method.

Spin-charge transport driven by magnetization dynamics on disordered surface of doped topological insulators

We theoretically study the spin and charge generation along with the electron transport on a disordered surface of a doped three-dimensional topological insulator/magnetic insulator junction by using Green's function techniques. We find that the spin and charge current are induced by not only local but also nonlocal magnetization dynamics through nonmagnetic impurity scattering on the disordered surface of the doped topological insulator. We also clarify that the spin current as well as charge density are induced by spatially inhomogeneous magnetization dynamics, and the spin current diffusively propagates on the disordered surface. Using these results, we discuss both local and nonlocal spin torques before and after the spin and spin current generation on the surface, and provide a procedure to detect the spin current.

Spontaneous modulation of superconducting phase in Kitaev ladder

We study theoretically the two Kitaev chains put in parallel, i.e., Kitaev ladder, coupled by Josephson junction. The $π$-junction between the Majorana bound states at the ends of the chains competes with the usual Josephson coupling along the chain, and this frustration leads to the modulation of the phase difference of the superconducting order parameter between the two chains. We show that this modulation gives the double degeneracy of the ground states, which can be manipulated by external electric and magnetic fields.

Superconducting proximity effect in three-dimensional topological insulators in the presence of a magnetic field

The proximity induced pair potential in a topological insulator-superconductor hybrid features an interesting superposition of a conventional spin-singlet component from the superconductor and a spin-triplet one induced by the surface state of the topological insulator. This singlet-triplet superposition can be altered by the presence of a magnetic field. We study the interplay between topological order and superconducting correlations performing a symmetry analysis of the induced pair potential, using Green functions techniques to theoretically describe ballistic junctions between superconductors and topological insulators under magnetic fields. We relate a change in the conductance from a gapped profile into one with a zero-energy peak with the transition into a topologically nontrivial regime where the odd-frequency triplet pairing becomes the dominant component in the pair potential. The nontrivial regime, which provides a signature of odd-frequency triplet superconductivity, is reached for an out-of-plane effective magnetization with strength comparable to the chemical potential of the superconductor or for an in-plane one, parallel to the normal-superconductor interface, with strength of the order of the superconducting gap. Strikingly, in the latter case, a misalignment with the interface yields an asymmetry with the energy in the conductance unless the total contribution of the topological surface state is considered.

Surface electronic state of superconducting topological crystalline insulator

We study the surface state of a doped topological crystalline insulator in the superconducting state. Motivated by Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te, we consider fully gapped pair potentials and calculate the surface spectral function. It is found that mirror-protected zero-energy Andreev bound states appear at the (001) surface and that these states can move along the mirror symmetric line on the surface Brillouin zone. We also show that the surface Andreev bound state changes systematically with doping due to the presence of the Dirac surface state in the normal state.

Theory of tunneling conductance of anomalous Rashba metal / superconductor junctions

We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For the ARM/spin-singlet superconductor junctions, the obtained tunneling conductance within the bulk energy gap is enhanced with the increase in the magnitude of the RSOI. In particular, in ARM/$d_{xy}$-wave superconductor junctions, the zero bias conductance peak is enhanced owing to the presence of the RSOI. For ARM/$p_{x}$-wave superconductor junctions, the condition of the existence of the zero bias conductance peak is significantly sensitive to the direction of the d-vector of the $p_{x}$-wave superconductor. Furthermore, the obtained conductance in ARM/chiral $p$-wave superconductor junctions shows different behaviors as compared to those in ARM/helical $p$-wave superconductor junctions. This feature gives a guide to determine the spin structure of the Cooper pair in spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Tunneling spectroscopy and Josephson current of superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids on the surface of a 3D TI

We investigate the charge transport property of superconductor (S) /normal metal (N) / ferromagnet insulator (FI) /(normal metal) N' and S/N/FI/N'/S Josephson junctions on a three-dimensional topological insulator surface. We find asymmetric local density of states (LDOSs) in a S/N/FI/N' junction and show that the finite length of the N interlayer gives rise to subgap resonant spikes in the differential conductance and LDOSs. We show that the axial current is controlled by the magnetization dynamics in a magnetic insulator attached to a Weyl semimetal. We find that the induced axial current can be detected by using ferromagnetic resonance or the inverse spin Hall effect and can be converted into charge current with no accompanying energy loss. These properties make Weyl semimetal advantageous for application to low-consumption electronics with new functionality.

Consequences of bulk odd-frequency superconducting states for the classification of Cooper pairs

We analyze symmetries and magnetic properties of Cooper pairs appearing as subdominant pairing correlations in inhomogeneous superconductors, on the basis of the quasiclassical Green-function theory. The frequency symmetry, parity, and the type of magnetic response of such subdominant correlations are opposite to those of the dominant pairing correlations in the bulk state. Our conclusion is valid even when we generalize the theory of superconductivity to recently proposed diamagnetic odd-frequency superconductors. As a consequence, Cooper pairs are classified into eight classes in terms of their symmetries and magnetic properties. Anomalous magnetic properties of subdominant components can be probed by studying the Meissner effect.

Crossed surface flat bands of Weyl semimetal superconductors

It has been noted that certain surfaces of Weyl semimetals have bound states forming open Fermi arcs, which are never seen in typical metallic states. We show that the Fermi arcs enable them to support an even more exotic surface state with crossed flat bands in the superconducting state. We clarify the topological origin of the crossed flat bands and the relevant symmetry that stabilizes the cross point. We also discuss their possible experimental verification by tunneling spectroscopy.

Dirac-Fermion-Induced Parity Mixing in Superconducting Topological Insulators

We self-consistently study surface states of superconducting topological insulators. We clarify that, if a topologically trivial bulk s-wave pairing symmetry is realized, parity mixing of pair potential near the surface is anomalously enhanced by surface Dirac fermions, opening an additional surface gap larger than the bulk one. In contrast to classical s-wave superconductors, the resulting surface density of state hosts an extra coherent peak at the induced gap besides a conventional peak at the bulk gap. We also find that no such extra peak appears for odd-parity superconductors with a cylindrical Fermi surface. Our calculation suggests that the simple U-shaped scanning tunneling microscope spectrum in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ does not originate from s-wave superconductivity, but can be explained by odd-parity superconductivity with a cylindrical Fermi surface.

Effect of Fermi surface evolution on superconducting gap in superconducting topological insulator

We study bulk electronic states of superconducting topological insulator, which is the promising candidate for topological superconductor. Recent experiments suggest that the three-dimensional Fermi surface evolves into two-dimensional one. We show that the superconducting energy gap structure on the Fermi surface systematically changes with this evolution. It is clarified that the bulk electronic properties such as spin-lattice relaxation rate and specific heat depend on the shape of the Fermi surface and the type of the energy gap function. These results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Fermion Fractionalization to Majorana Fermions in Dimerized Kitaev Superconductor

We study theoretically a one-dimensional dimerized Kitaev superconductor model which belongs to BDI class with time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral symmetries. There are two sources of the particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the sublattice symmetry and superconductivity. Accordingly, we define two types of topological numbers with respect to the chiral indices of normal and Majorana fermions, which offers an ideal laboratory to examine the interference between the two different physics within the same symmetry class. Phase diagram, zero-energy bound states, and conductance at normal metal/superconductor junction of this model are unveiled from this viewpoint. Especially, the electron fractionalization to the Majorana fermions showing the splitting of the local density of states is realized at the soliton of the dimerization in this model.

Finite-size-effect-induced topological phase transition in a topological crystalline insulator

We study electronic states and topological invariants of (001)-films of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb_{x}Sn_{1-x}Te. Gapless surface Dirac cones on bulk TCIs become gapped in thin films due to finite-size effect, which is hybridization between those on the top and bottom surfaces. We clarify that the TCI film has the strong finite-size effect as compared to three-dimensional topological insulators such as Bi2Se3. Moreover, the energy gap oscillates with the thickness of film. The oscillation stems from topological phase transitions in two dimensions. The obtained data of the topological invariants and energy gap serve as guide to TCI-device applications.

Majorana Bound States in Proximity Junctions of Superconducting Nanowires with Dresselhaus Spin-orbit Coupling

We theoretically study transport properties of nanowires with the Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman potential and the proximity-induced s-wave pair potential. In the topologically nontrivial phase, the nanowire hosts the Majorana fermions at its edges and the number of the Majorana bound states is equal to the number propagating channels (Nc). When we attach a normal metal to the superconductor, such Majorana bound states penetrate into the dirty normal segment and form the Nc resonant transmission channels there. We show that chiral symmetry of the electronic states protects the Majorana bound states at the zero energy even in the presence of impurities. As a result, we find that the zero-bias conductance of normal-nanowire/superconducting-nanowire junctions is quantized at 2e2Nc/h independent of the random potentials.

Majorana Braiding Dynamics on Nanowires

Superconductors hosting long-sought excitations called Majorana fermions may be ultimately used as qubits of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. A crucial challenge toward the topological quantum computer is to implement quantum operation of nearly degenerate quantum states as a dynamical process of Majorana fermions. In this paper, we investigate the braiding dynamics of Majorana fermions on superconducting nanowires. In a finite size system, a non- adiabatic dynamical process dominates the non-Abelian braiding that operates qubits of Majorana fermions. Our simulations clarify how qubits behave in the real-time braiding process, and elucidate the optimum condition of superconducting nanowires for efficient topological quantum operation.

Majorana edge states and topological properties in 1D/2D Rashba semiconductor proximity coupled to iron-based superconductor

We study Majorana edge states and their topological properties of one-dimensional(1D) and two-dimensional(2D) Rashba semiconductor deposited on iron-based superconductor under the applied Zeeman field for various directions. Using the recursive Green's function method, we calculate the local density of states(LDOS) both for $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$-wave pairings. We elucidate that it shows anisotropic response to the applied Zeeman field specific to Majorana edge states. This anisotropy can be understood by the winding number, which shows whether the present system is topological or not. The resulting LDOS and winding numbers for $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$-wave pairings are significantly different at the lower Zeeman field. These results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of iron-pnictide.

Microscopic theory of tunneling spectroscopy in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We study the surface Andreev bound state (ABS) of superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, which is a candidate material for the realization of the chiral $p$-wave superconducting state. In order to clarify the role of chiral edge modes as ABSs, the surface density of states and the tunneling conductance is calculated in the normal metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junction within the framework of recursive Green's function method, while taking into account the orbital degrees of freedom (including Spin-Orbit interactions) with realistic material parameters. In Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, there are two bands $α$ and $β$ originating from quasi-one-dimensional orbitals $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ and a two-dimensional band $γ$ originating from $d_{xy}$ orbital. We discuss about the contributions of various electronic bands to LDOS and the influence of atomic spin-orbit interaction (SOI). In the light of our calculations, quasi-one-dimensional model with dominant pair potentials in $α$ and $β$ bands is consistent with conductance measurements in Au/Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ junctions.

Quasi-classical theory of tunneling spectroscopy in superconducting topological insulator

We develop a theory of tunneling spectroscopy in superconducting topological insulator (STI), i.e. superconducting state of a carrier-doped topological insulator. Based on the quasi-classical approximation, we obtain an analytical expression of the energy dispersion of surface Andreev bound states (ABSs) and a compact formula for tunneling conductance of normal metal/STI junctions. The obtained compact formula of tunneling conductance makes the analysis of experimental data easy. As an application of our theory, we study tunneling conductance in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We reveal that our theory reproduces the previous results by Yamakage {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 85, 180509(R) (2012)]. We further study magneto-tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of external magnetic fields, where the energy of quasiparticles is shifted by the Doppler effect. By rotating magnetic fields in the basal plane, we can distinguish between two different topological superconducting states with and without point nodes, in their magneto-tunneling spectra.

Topological Blount's theorem of odd-parity superconductors

From the group theoretical ground, the Blount's theorem prohibits the existence of line nodes for odd-parity superconductors (SCs) in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We study the topological stability of line nodes under inversion symmetry. From the topological point of view, we renovate the stability condition of line nodes, in which we not only generalize the original statement, but also establish the relation to zero-energy surface flat dispersions. The topological instability of line nodes in odd-parity SCs implies not the absence of bulk line nodes but the disappearance of the corresponding zero-energy surface flat dispersions due to surface Rashba SOC, which gives an experimental means to distinguish line nodes in odd-parity SCs from those in other SCs.

Topological Phase Transition without Gap Closing

Topological phase transition is accompanied with a change of topological numbers. It has been believed that the gap closing and the breakdown of the adiabaticity at the transition point is necessary in general. However, the gap closing is not always needed to make the topological index ill-defined. In this paper, we show that the states with different topological numbers can be continuously connected \textit{without} gap closing in some cases, where the symmetry of the system changes during the process. Here we propose the generic principles how this is possible (impossible) by demonstrating various examples such as 1D polyacetylene with the charge-density-wave order, 2D silicene with the antiferromagnetic order, 2D silicene or quantum well made of HgTe with superconducting proximity effects and 3D superconductor Cu doped Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. It is argued that such an unusual phenomenon can occur when we detour around the gap closing point provided the connection of the topological indices is lost along the detour path.

Transport signatures of superconducting hybrids with mixed singlet and chiral triplet states

We propose a model for a superconductor where both spin-singlet and chiral triplet pairing amplitudes can coexist. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with a general pair potential that accounts for both spin states we study experimental signatures of normal metal and superconductor hybrids. The interplay between the spin-singlet and triplet correlations manifests in the appearance of two effective gaps. When the amplitude of the spin-triplet component is stronger than that of the spin-singlet, a topological phase transition into a non-trivial regime occurs. As a result, the normal metal-superconductor conductance evolves from a conventional gap profile onto an unconventional zero-bias peak. Additionally, in the topologically non-trivial phase, Andreev bound states formed at Josephson junctions present zero-energy modes; the number of those modes depends on the relative chirality of the junction. Finally, we present results for the current-phase relation and the temperature dependence of the Josephson critical current within both topological phases for several system parameters.

Anomalous Josephson current in superconducting topological insulator

We investigate the effect of helical Majorana fermions at the surface of superconducting topological insulators (STI) on the Josephson current by referring to possible pairing states of Cu-doped Bi2Se3. The surface state in the present STI has a spin helicity because the directions of spin and momentum are locked to each other. The Josephson current-phase relation in an STI/s-wave superconductor junction shows robust sin(2ϕ) owing to mirror symmetry, where ϕdenotes the macroscopic phase difference between the two superconductors. In contrast, the maximum Josephson current in an STI/STI junction exhibits a nonmonotonic temperature dependence depending on the relative spin helicity of the two surface states. Detecting these features qualifies as distinct experimental evidence for the identification of the helical Majorana fermion in STIs.

Bulk electronic state of superconducting topological insulator

We study electronic properties of a superconducting topological insulator whose parent material is a topological insulator. We calculate the temperature dependence of the specific heat and spin susceptibility for four promising superconducting pairings proposed by L. Fu and E. Berg (Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 097001). Since the line shapes of temperature dependence of specific heat are almost identical among three of the four pairings, it is difficult to identify them simply from the specific heat. On the other hand, we obtain wide varieties of the temperature dependence of spin susceptibility for each pairing reflecting the spin structure of Cooper pair. We propose that the pairing symmetry of superconducting topological insulator can be determined from measurement of Knight shift by changing the direction of applied magnetic field.

We investigate charge transport of pn and npn junctions made from silicene, Si analogue of graphene. The conductance shows the distinct gate-voltage dependences peculiar to the topological and non-topological phases, where the topological phase transition is caused by external electric field. Namely, the conductance is suppressed in the np regime when the both sides are topological, while in the nn regime when one side is topological and the other side is non-topological. Furthermore, we find that the conductance is almost quantized to be 0, 1 and 2. Our findings will open a new way to nanoelectronics based on silicene.

Majorana Fermions and Odd-frequency Cooper Pairs in a Nano Wire

We discuss a strong relationship between Majorana fermions and odd-frequency Cooper pairs which appear at a disordered normal (N) nano wire attached to a topologically nontrivial superconducting (S) one. The transport properties in superconducting nano wire junctions show universal behaviors irrespective of the degree of disorder: the quantized zero-bias differential conductance at 2e^{2}/h in NS junction and the fractional current-phase (J-φ) relationship of the Josephson effect in SNS junction J\propto \sin(φ/2). Such behaviors are exactly the same as those in the anomalous proximity effect of odd-parity spin-triplet superconductors. We show that odd-frequency Cooper pairs support the universal transport properties. The odd-frequency pairs exist wherever the Majorana fermions stay.

Robustness of Spin-Triplet Pairing and Singlet-Triplet Pairing Crossover in Superconductor/Ferromagnet Hybrids

We have investigated the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet junctions in a systematic manner to discuss the relationship between the zero-energy peak (ZEP) of the local density of states (LDOS) and spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing. By exactly solving the nonlinear Usadel equations, we have found that the ZEP is realized in a wide range of geometrical and material parameters in the case of the noncollinear magnetization. This strongly suggests the robustness of the ZEP induced by spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing in such systems. We also found that the crossover from singlet pairing to triplet pairing can be detected by measuring the F layer thickness dependence of the ZEP height. Furthermore, we show how to observe signatures of spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing and the pairing crossover by LDOS measurement. Our results provide a direct way to experimentally detect signatures of the odd-frequency pairing state.

Symmetry-Protected Majorana Fermions in Topological Crystalline Superconductors: Theory and Application to Sr2RuO4

Crystal point group symmetry is shown to protect Majorana fermions (MFs) in spinfull superconductors (SCs). We elucidate the condition necessary to obtain MFs protected by the point group symmetry. We argue that superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 hosts a topological phase transition to a topological crystalline SC, which accompanies a d-vector rotation under a magnetic field along the c-axis. Taking all three bands and spin-orbit interactions into account, symmetry-protected MFs in the topological crystalline SC are identified. Detection of such MFs provides evidence of the d-vector rotation in Sr2RuO4 expected from Knight shift measurements but not yet verified.

Two-dimensional p-wave superconducting states with magnetic moments on a conventional s-wave superconductor

Unconventional superconductivity induced by the magnetic moments in a conventional spin-singlet s-wave superconductor is theoretically studied. By choosing the spin directions of these moments, one can design spinless pairing states appearing within the s-wave superconducting energy gap. It is found that the helix spins produce px + py-wave state while the skyrmion crystal configuration px + ipy-wave like state. Because of the spin mixing transport at the interface, odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave Cooper pairs penetrate into the normal metal and cause the anomalous response to electromagnetic fields. At low temperature, the local impedance at a surface of the normal metal shows the nonmonotonic temperature dependence and the anomalous relation R>X. We also discuss a possibility of observing such anomalous impedance in experiments.

Crossover between BCS Superconductor and Doped Mott Insulator of d-wave Pairing State in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

With high-Tc cuprates in mind, properties of correlated dx2-y2-wave superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) states are studied for the Hubbard (t-t'-U) model on square lattices, using a variational Monte Carlo method. We employ simple trial wave functions including only crucial parameters, such as a doublon-holon binding factor indispensable to describe correlated SC and normal states as doped Mott insulators. U/t, t'/t and δ(doping rate) dependence of relevant quantities are systematically calculated. As U/t increases, a sharp crossover of SC properties occurs at U_co/t \sim 10 from a conventional BCS type to a kinetic-energy-driven type for any t'/t. As δdecreases, U_co/t is smoothly connected to the Mott transition point at half filling. For U/t\lsim 5, steady superconductivity corresponding to the cuprates is not found, whereas the d-wave SC correlation function Pd^\infty rapidly increases for U/t\gsim 6 and becomes maximum at U=U_co. Comparing the δdependence of Pd^\infty with experimentally observed dome-shaped Tc and condensation energy, we find that the effective value of $U$ for the cuprates should be larger than the band width, for which the t-J model is valid. Analyzing the kinetic energy, we reveal that for U>U_co only doped holes (electrons) become charge carriers, which will make a small Fermi surface (hole pocket), but for U<U_co all the electrons (holes) contribute to conduction and will make an ordinary large Fermi surface, which is contradictory to the feature of cuprates. By introducing a proper negative (positive) t'/t, the SC (AF) state is stabilized. In the underdoped regime, the strength of SC for U>U_co is determined by two factors, i.e., the AF spin correlation, which creates singlet pairs (pseudogap), and the charge mobility dominated by Mott physics.

ABS becomes a chiral Majorana edge mode similar to that in spinless chiral p-wave pairing in topological phase (TP). We clarify that two types of quantum criticality about the topological change of ABS near a quantum critical point (QCP), whether ABS exists at QCP or not. Majorana bound states and non-local spin correlations in a quantum wire on an unconventional superconductor

We study theoretically the proximity effect of a one-dimensional metallic quantum wire (in the absence of spin-orbit interaction) lying on top of an unconventional superconductor. Three different material classes are considered as a substrate: (i) a chiral superconductor in class D with broken time-reversal symmetry; a class DIII superconductor (ii) with and (iii) without a nontrivial Z2 number. Interestingly, we find degenerate zero energy Majorana bound states at both ends of the wire for all three cases. They are unstable against spin-orbit interaction in case (i) while they are topologically protected by time-reversal symmetry in cases (ii) and (iii). Remarkably, we show that non-local spin correlations between the two ends of the wire can be simply controlled by a gate potential in our setup.

New approach to theory of tunneling spectroscopy in unconventional superconductors

We have derived new boundary conditions on wave function at the normal metal / superconductor (NS) interface beyond effective mass approximation. These conditions are based on tight-binding approach and enable one to formulate quantitative model for tunneling spectroscopy of superconductors with complex non-parabolic energy spectra. The model is applied to superconductors with unconventional pairing and with multiband electronic structure. In the case of single band unconventional superconductors this model provides known conductance formula (Phys. Rev. Lett. 74 3451 1995), but with generalized definition of the normal-state conductance. Based on new boundary conditions, we have calculated conductance in normal metal / superconducting pnictide junctions for different orientations of the NS interface with respect to the crystallographic axes of the pnictides. The present approach provides the basis for quantitative tunneling spectroscopy in multi-orbital superconductors.

Solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we study the spatial structure of odd-frequency s-wave Cooper pair amplitudes at each quantized energy level of vortex bound states in chiral p-wave superconductors. For zero energy Majorana states, the odd-frequency s-wave pair amplitude has the same spatial structure as that of the local density of states even in atomic length scale. This relation also holds in finite energy bound states for single vortex winding anti-parallel to the chirality, but not for parallel vortex winding. The double winding vortex case is also studied.

Theory of tunneling spectroscopy for chiral topological superconductors

We study the charge conductance of an interface between a normal metal and a superconducting quantum anomalous Hall system, based on the recursive Green's function. The angle resolved conductance gamma(ky, eV) with the momentum ky parallel to the interface and the bias voltage V shows a rich structure depending on the Chern number N of the system. We find that when the bias voltage is tuned to the energy dispersion of the edge mode, eV = Eedge(ky), the angle resolved conductance gamma(ky,Eedge(ky)) shows a pronounced even-odd effect; the conductance vanishes for N = 0 or 2 while it takes a universal value 2e^2/h for N = 1. In particular, in N = 2 phase, we find that the conductance gamma(ky,Eedge(ky)) becomes zero due to interference of two degenerate Majorana edge modes, although the corresponding surface spectral weight remains non-zero.

Based on the symmetry and topological nature of parent topological insulators, we find that the SABSs in the STIs have a profound structural transition in the energy dispersions. The transition results in a variety of Majorana fermions, by tuning the chemical potential and the effective mass of the energy band. In particular, the magnetic susceptibility depends on the temperature in an oscillatory fashion, accompanied by its sign change. In contrast to the standard relation (i.e., R << X), the surface impedance in spin-triplet proximity structures shows anomalous behavior (i.e., R>X) at low temperatures. Symmetry and Topology in Superconductors - Odd-frequency pairing and edge states -

Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the macroscopic quantum coherence appears due to the pairing of electrons. This offers a fascinating arena to study the physics of broken gauge symmetry. However, the important symmetries in superconductors are not only the gauge invariance. Especially, the symmetry properties of the pairing, i.e., the parity and spin-singlet/spin-triplet, determine the physical properties of the superconducting state. Recently it has been recognized that there is the important third symmetry of the pair amplitude, i.e., even or odd parity with respect to the frequency. The conventional uniform superconducting states correspond to the even-frequency pairing, but the recent finding is that the odd-frequency pair amplitude arises in the spatially non-uniform situation quite ubiquitously. Especially, this is the case in the Andreev bound state (ABS) appearing at the surface/interface of the sample. The other important recent development is on the nontrivial topological aspects of superconductors. As the band insulators are classified by topological indices into (i) conventional insulator, (ii) quantum Hall insulator, and (iii) topological insulator, also are the gapped superconductors. The influence of the nontrivial topology of the bulk states appears as the edge or surface of the sample. In the superconductors, this leads to the formation of zero energy ABS (ZEABS). Therefore, the ABSs of the superconductors are the place where the symmetry and topology meet each other which offer the stage of rich physics. In this review, we discuss the physics of ABS from the viewpoint of the odd-frequency pairing, the topological bulk-edge correspondence, and the interplay of these two issues. It is described how the symmetry of the pairing and topological indices determines the absence/presence of the ZEABS, its energy dispersion, and properties as the Majorana fermions.

Theory of edge states in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator/ spin-singlet s-wave superconductor hybrid system

We study the edge states for a quantum anomalous Hall system (QAHS) coupled with a spin-singlet s-wave superconductor through the proximity effect, and clarify the topological nature of them. When we consider a superconducting pair potential induced in the QAHS, there appear topological phases with nonzero Chern numbers, $i.e.$, ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$, where Andreev bound states appear as chiral Majorana edge modes. We calculate the energy spectrum of the edge modes and the resulting local density of states. It is found that the degenerate chiral Majorana edge modes for ${\cal N}=2$ are lifted off by applying Zeeman magnetic field along the parallel to the interface or the shift of the chemical potential by doping. The degeneracy of the chiral Majorana edge modes and its lifting are explained by two different winding numbers defined at the time-reversal invariant point of the edge momentum.

The transfer integrals are calculated by the extended Huckel method assuming the uniaxial strain and the superconducting state mediated by the spin fluctuation is solved using Eliashberg's equation with the fluctuation-exchange approximation. The calculation is carried out on both the dimerized (one-band) and nondimerized (two-band) Hubbard models. We have found that (i) the behavior of Tc in beta-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 with a stronger dimerization is well reproduced by the dimer model, while that in weakly dimerized beta-BDA-TTP salts is rather well reproduced by the two-band model, and (ii) the competition between the spin frustration and the effect induced by the fluctuation is important in these materials, which causes nonmonotonic shift of Tc against uniaxial compression.

Topological Superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3

A topological superconductor (TSC) is characterized by the topologically-protected gapless surface state that is essentially an Andreev bound state consisting of Majorana fermions. While a TSC has not yet been discovered, the doped topological insulator CuxBi2Se3, which superconducts below ~3 K, has been predicted to possess a topological superconducting state. We report that the point-contact spectra on the cleaved surface of superconducting CuxBi2Se3 present a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) which signifies unconventional superconductivity. Theoretical considerations of all possible superconducting states help us conclude that this ZBCP is due to Majorana Fermions and gives evidence for a topological superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3. In addition, we found an unusual pseudogap that develops below ~20 K and coexists with the topological superconducting state.

Topology of Andreev Bound States with Flat Dispersion

A theory of dispersionless Andreev bound states on surfaces of time-reversal invariant unconventional superconductors is presented. The generalized criterion for the dispersionless Andreev bound state is derived from the bulk-edge correspondence, and the chiral spin structure of the dispersionless Andreev bound states is argued from which the Andreev bound state is stabilized. Then we summarize the criterion in a form of index theorems. The index theorems are proved in a general framework to certify the bulk-edge correspondence. As concrete examples, we discuss (i) dxy-wave superconductor (ii) px-wave superconductor, and (iii) noncentrosymmetric superconductors. In the last example, we find a peculiar time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion. The time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion shows an unusual response to the Zeeman magnetic field, which can be used to identify it experimentally.

Tunneling Hamiltonian description of the atomic-scale 0-pi transition in superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator junctions

We show a perturbation theory of the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). Recently we have found that the appearance of the atomic scale 0-pi transition in such junctions based on numerical calculations. In order to explore the mechanism of this anomalous transition, we have analytically calculated the Josephson current using the tunneling Hamiltonian theory and found that the spin dependent pi-phase shift in the FI barrier gives the atomic scale 0-pi transition.

Anomalous Andreev bound state in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bias conductance peak.

DC Current Driven Critical Current Variation in Sr2RuO4-Ru Junction Proved by Local Transport Measurements

To search for new evidence of the chiral p-wave superconducting domain in Sr2RuO4, we investigated the unconventional local transport characteristics of a microfabricated Sr2RuO4-Ru eutectic junction. We found that the anomalous hysteresis in voltage-current characteristics [as reported in H. Kambara et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 (2008) 267003.] is strongly affected by dc currents, but not by magnetic fields. This suggests that dc current acts as a driving force to move chiral p-wave domain walls; a domain wall trapped at a pinning potential is forced to shift to the next stable position, thereby forming a larger critical current path and resulting in the anomalous hysteresis.

Effect of d-f hybridization on the Josephson current through Eu-chalcogenides

A superconducting ring with a pi junction made from superconductor/ferromagnetic-metal/superconductor (S-FM-S) exhibits a spontaneous current without an external magnetic field in the ground state. Such pi ring provides so-called quiet qubit that can be efficiently decoupled from the fluctuation of the external field. However, the usage of the FM gives rise to strong Ohmic dissipation. Therefore, the realization of pi junctions without FM is expected for qubit applications. We theoretically consider the possibility of the pi coupling for S/Eu-chalcogenides/S junctions based on the d-f Hamiltonian. By use of the Green's function method we found that pi junction can be formed in the case of the finite d-f hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electrons.

Interplay between Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism on a Topological Insulator

We study theoretically proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetism on the surface of a topological insulator. In particular, we investigate how the Andreev-bound states are influenced by the interplay between these phenomena, taking also into account the possibility of unconventional pairing. We find a qualitative difference in the excitation spectrum when comparing spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, leading to non-gapped excitations in the latter case. The formation of surface-states and their dependence on the magnetization orientation is investigated, and it is found that these states are Majorana fermions in the $d_{xy}$-wave case in stark contrast to the topologically trivial high-$T_c$ cuprates. The signature of such states in the conductance spectra is studied, and we also compute the supercurrent which flows on the surface of the topological insulator when a Josephson junction is deposited on top of it. It is found that the current exhibits an anomalous current-phase relation when the region separating the superconducting banks is ferromagnetic, and we also show that in contrast to the metallic case the exchange field in such a scenario does not induce 0-$π$ oscillations in the critical current. Similarly to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, the presence of zero-energy surface states on the topological surface leads to a strong low-temperature enhancement of the critical current.

Josephson pi-state in a ferromagnetic insulator

We predict anomalous atomic-scale 0-pi transitions in a Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic-insulator (FI) barrier. The ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We find that the mechanism of the 0-pi transition can be attributed to thickness-dependent phase-shifts between the wave numbers of electrons and holes in FI. Based on these results, we show that stable pi-state can be realized in junctions based on high-Tc superconductors with La$_2$BaCuO$_5$ barrier.

Realization of Berezinskii's superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional systems

We revisit the pairing symmetry competition in quasi-one-dimensional systems. We show that spin-triplet s-wave pairing, where the pair is formed by electrons with different times and has an odd-frequency symmetry, can be realized in systems with strong one-dimensionality when the strength of charge fluctuation dominates over spin fluctuation. The present study provides a novel microscopic mechanism for this exotic pairing originally proposed by Berezinskii in 1974.

Surface density of states and topological edge states in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study Andreev bound state (ABS) and surface density of state (SDOS) of non-centrosymmetric superconductor where spin-singlet $d$-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet $p$ (or $f)$-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For $d_{xy} + p$-wave pairing, ABS appears as a zero energy state. The present ABS is a Majorana edge mode preserving the time reversal symmetry. We calculate topological invariant number and discuss the relevance to a single Majorana edge mode. In the presence of the Majorana edge mode, the SDOS depends strongly on the direction of the Zeeman field.

Theoretical aspects of Andreev spectroscopy and tunneling spectroscopy in non-centrosymmetric superconductors: a topical review

Tunneling spectroscopy at surfaces of unconventional superconductors has proven an invaluable tool for obtaining information about the pairing symmetry. It is known that mid gap Andreev bound states manifest itself as a zero bias conductance peak in tunneling spectroscopy. The zero bias conductance peak is a signature for a non-trivial pair potential that exhibits different signs on different regions of the Fermi surface. Here, we review recent theoretical results on the spectrum of Andreev bound states near interfaces and surfaces in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We introduce a theoretical scheme to calculate the energy spectrum of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor. Then, we discuss the interplay between the spin orbit vector field on the Fermi surface and the order parameter symmetry. The Andreev states carry a spin supercurrent and represent a helical edge mode along the interface. We study the topological nature of the resulting edge currents. If the triplet component of the order parameter dominates, then the helical edge mode exists. If, on the other hand, the singlet component dominates, the helical edge mode is absent. A quantum phase transition occurs for equal spin singlet and triplet order parameter components. We discuss the tunneling conductance and the Andreev point contact conductance between a normal metal and a non-centrosymmetric superconductor.

Theory of Josephson transport through spintronics nano-structure

We study the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs) by taking into account its band structure explicitly. In the case of the fully polarized FIs (FPFIs), we found the formation of a pi-junction and an atomic-scale 0-pi transition induced by increasing the FI thickness. More remarkably, in the Josephson junction through spin-filter materials such as Eu chalcogenides, the orbital hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electron gives rise to the pi-junction behavior. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent solid-state quantum bits.

Such ferromagnetic-oxide based Josephson junctions may become an element in the architecture of future quantum computers.

Tunneling between Two Helical Superconductors via Majorana Edge Channels

We discuss electric transport through a point contact which bridges Majorana fermion modes appearing at edges of two helical superconductors. The contents focus on effects of interference and interaction unique to the Majorana fermions and role of spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Besides the Josephson current, the quasi-particle conductance depends sensitively on phase difference and relative helicity between the two superconductors. The interaction among the Majorana fermions causes the power-law temperature dependences of conductance for various tunneling channels. Especially, in the presence of SOI, the conductance always increases as the temperature is lowered.

Unconventional superconductivity on a topological insulator

We study proximity-induced superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator (TI), focusing on unconventional pairing. We find that the excitation spectrum becomes gapless for any spin-triplet pairing, such that both subgap bound states and Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed. For spin-singlet pairing, the zero-energy surface state in the $d_{xy}$-wave case becomes a Majorana fermion, in contrast to the situation realized in the topologically trivial high-$T_c$ cuprates. We also study the influence of a Zeeman field on the surface states. Both the magnitude and direction of this field is shown to strongly influence the transport properties, in contrast to the case without TI. We predict an experimental signature of the Majorana states via conductance spectroscopy.

Anomalous magnetoresistance on the topological surface

We investigate charge transport in two-dimensional ferromagnet/feromagnet junction on a topological insulator. The conductance across the interface depends sensitively on the directions of the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets, showing anomalous behaviors compared with the conventional spin-valve. It is found that the conductance depends strongly on the in-plane direction of the magnetization. Moreover, in sharp contrast to the conventional magnetoresistance effect, in the p-n junction, the conductance at the parallel configuration is much smaller than that at the antiparallel configuration. This stems from the way how the wavefunctions connect between both sides.

Electrically controlled superconducting states at the heterointerface SrTiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$

We study the symmetry of Cooper pair in a two-dimensional Hubbard model with the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction as a minimal model of electron gas generated at a heterointerface of SrTiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$. Solving the Eliashberg equation based on the third-order perturbation theory, we find that the gap function consists of the mixing of the spin-singlet $d_{xy}$-wave component and the spin-triplet $(p_x\pm ip_y)$-wave one due to the broken inversion symmetry originating from the Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. The ratio of the d-wave and the p-wave component continuously changes with the carrier concentration. We propose that the pairing symmetry is controlled by tuning the gate voltage.

Pairing competition in a quasi-one-dimensional model of organic superconductors (TMTSF)$_{2}X$ in magnetic field

We microscopically study the effect of the magnetic field (Zeeman splitting) on the superconducting state in a model for quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductors (TMTSF)$_{2}X$. We investigate the competition between spin singlet and spin triplet pairings and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov(FFLO) state by random phase approximation. While we studied the competition by comparison with the eigenvalue of the gap equation at a fixed temperature in our previous study (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102} (2009) 016403), here we obtain both the $T_c$ for each pairing state and a phase diagram in the $T$(temperature)-$h_z$(field)-$V_y$(strength of the charge fluctuation) space. The phase diagram shows that consecutive transitions from singlet pairing to the FFLO state and further to $S_z=1$ triplet pairing can occur upon increasing the magnetic field when $2k_{F}$ charge fluctuations coexist with $2k_{F}$ spin fluctuations. In the FFLO state, the singlet d-wave and $S_{z}=0$ triplet $f$-wave components are strongly mixed especially when the charge fluctuations are strong.

Surface density of states of s+-wave Cooper pairs in a two-band model

We calculate surface density of state (SDOS) of s+-wave Cooper pair in two-band superconductor model, where gap functions have different signs between two bands. We find that Andreev bound state appears at surface due to the sign change in the gap function in the interband quasiparticle scattering. However, we do not obtain the zero-energy peak of SDOS in contrast to the d-wave case. The tunneling spectroscopy of s+-wave is much more complex as compared to the d-wave case realized in high-Tc cuprates.

Theory of charge transport in ferromagnetic semiconductor/s-wave superconductor junction

We study tunneling conductance in ferromagnetic semiconductor/insulator/s-wave superconductor junction where Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and exchange field are taken into account in the ferromagnetic semiconductor. We show that normalized conductance at zero voltage has a maximum as a function of RSOI for high transparent interface and finite exchange field. This is because Andreev reflection probability shows a nonmonotonic dependence on RSOI in the presence of the exchange field. On the other hand, for intermediate transparent interface, normalized conductance at zero voltage has a reentrant shape at zero or small exchange field with increasing RSOI but is monotonically increasing by RSOI at large exchange field.

Theory of pairing symmetry in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov vortex state and vortex lattice

We investigate pairing symmetry in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) vortex state and vortex lattice, and explain the electronic structure in these states in terms of pairing symmetry. We show analytically that at the intersection point of FFLO nodal plane and vortex line, only even frequency pairing is present if the Zeeman splitting is negligibly small. With increasing Zeeman splitting, odd frequency pairing emerges there. This makes it possible to interpret the gap structure of the density of states at the intersection point as a manifestation of the even frequency pairing. In the vortex lattice, we find that only odd frequency pairing is present at the core centers, while at the midpoint of the vortex lines, only even frequency pairing exists. Thus, the odd and even frequency pairings also form the lattice in the vortex lattice state.

Odd-frequency Pairs and Josephson Current through a Strong Ferromagnet

We study Josephson current in superconductor / diffusive ferromagnet /superconductor junctions by using the recursive Green function method. When the exchange potential in a ferromagnet is sufficiently large as compared to the pair potential in a superconductor, an ensemble average of Josephson current is much smaller than its mesoscopic fluctuations. The Josephson current vanishes when the exchange potential is extremely large so that a ferromagnet is half-metallic. Spin-flip scattering at junction interfaces drastically changes the characteristic behavior of Josephson current. In addition to spin-singlet Cooper pairs, equal-spin triplet pairs penetrate into a half metal. Such equal-spin pairs have an unusual symmetry property called odd-frequency symmetry and carry the Josephson current through a half metal. The penetration of odd-frequency pairs into a half metal enhances the low energy quasiparticle density of states, which could be detected experimentally by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We will also show that odd-frequency pairs in a half metal cause a nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the critical Josephson current.

Spin-Dependent Mass Enhancement under Magnetic Field in the Periodic Anderson Model

In order to study the mechanism of the mass enhancement in heavy fermion compounds in the presence of magnetic field, we study the periodic Anderson model using the fluctuation exchange approximation. The resulting value of the mass enhancement factor z^{-1} can become up to 10, which is significantly larger than that in the single-band Hubbard model. We show that the difference between the magnitude of the mass enhancement factor of up spin (minority spin) electrons z^{-1}_up and that of down spin (majority spin) electrons z^{-1}_down increases by the applied magnetic field B//z, which is consistent with de Haas-van Alphen measurements for CeCoIn_5, CeRu_2Si_2 and CePd_2Si_2. We predict that z^{-1}_up >z^{-1}_down in many Ce compounds, whereas z^{-1}_up < z^{-1}_down in Yb compounds.

A unified origin for the 3D magnetism and superconductivity in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We analyze the origin of the three dimensional (3D) magnetism observed in nonhydrated Na-rich Na$_x$CoO$_2$ within an itinerant spin picture using a 3D Hubbard model. The origin is identified as the 3D nesting between the inner and outer portions of the Fermi surface, which arise due to the local minimum structure of the $a_{1g}$ band at the $Γ$-A line. The calculated spin wave dispersion strikingly resembles the neutron scattering result. We argue that this 3D magnetism and the spin fluctuations responsible for superconductivity in the hydrated systems share essentially the same origin.

Josephson Effect due to Odd-frequency Pairs in Diffusive Half Metals

The Josephson effect in superconductor / diffusive ferromagnet / superconductor (SFS) junctions is studied using the recursive Green function method in the regime of large exchange energy in a ferromagnet. Motivated by recent experiment [R. S. Keizer, et. al., Nature 439, 825 (2006)] we also address the case of superconductor / diffusive half metal / superconductor junctions. The pairing function in spin-singlet and triplet channels, the Josephson current and their mesoscopic fluctuations are calculated. We show that the spin-flip scattering at the junction interfaces opens the Josephson channel of the odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairs. As a consequence, the local density of states in half metals has a large peak at the Fermi energy. Therefore odd-frequency pairs can be detected experimentally by using the scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Transport phenomena in three-dimensional system close to the magnetic quantum critical point: The conserving approximation with the current vertex corrections

It is known that various transport coefficients strongly deviate from conventional Fermi-liquid behaviors in many electron systems which are close to antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical points (QCP). For example, Hall coefficients and Nernst coefficients in three-dimensional heavy fermion CeCoIn5 and CeCu6-xAux increase strikingly at low temperatures, whose overall behaviors are similar to those in high-Tc cuprates. These temperature dependences are too strong to explain in terms of the relaxation time approximation. To elucidate the origin of these anomalous transport phenomena in three-dimensional systems, we study the current vertex corrections (CVC) based on the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, and find out decisive role of the CVC. The main finding of the present paper is that the Hall coefficient and the Nernst coefficient strongly increase thanks to the CVC in the vicinity of the AF QCP, irrespective of dimensionality. We also study the relaxation time of quasi-particles, and find that "hot points" and "cold lines" are formed in general three-dimensional systems due to strong AF fluctuations.

Anomalous charge transport in mesoscopic triplet superconductor junctions

Charge transport properties of a diffusive normal metal /triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction are studied based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. % Contrary to the unconventional singlet superconductor junction case, the mid gap Andreev resonant state (MARS) at the interface of the TS is shown to enhance the proximity effect in the DN. % The total resistance of the DN/TS junction is drastically reduced and is completely independent of the resistance of the DN in the extreme case. % Such anomalous transport accompanies a giant zero-bias peak in the conductance spectra and a zero-energy peak of the local density of states in the DN region. % These striking features manifest the presence of novel proximity effect peculiar to triplet superconductor junctions.
