Perfect transmission and perfect reflection of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in a dynamically unstable Bose-Einstein condensate

The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) mode in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transmits a potential barrier with probability 1 in the zero-energy limit, which is known as the anomalous tunneling. In this paper, we investigate the tunneling properties of quasiparticles in a dynamically unstable BEC. We prepare a multi-component BEC (binary and spin-1 BEC) in a dynamically unstable state and solve the tunneling problem of the spin-wave excitation from the condensate. We find that the perfect transmission occurs even when the BEC is dynamically unstable if the spin-wave is the NG mode. Here, the mode that exhibits the perfect transmission is the dynamically unstable spin-wave mode, which is a pure-imaginary-eigenvalue solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. Hence, we should take the zero-energy limit along not the real axis but the imaginary axis. We also demonstrate the existence of the perfect reflection of a dynamically unstable mode at the point where the imaginary part of the eigenvalue takes its maximum. In this case, the incident and reflected waves destructively interfere, and the amplitude of the quasiparticle wave function is strongly suppressed. We numerically confirm that the perfect reflection is a generic nature of dynamically unstable modes and not related to the NG mode.

Scale-invariant relaxation dynamics in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with large particle-number imbalance

We theoretically study the scale-invariant relaxation dynamics in segregating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with large particle-number imbalance, and uncover that random walk of droplet for the minor component plays a fundamental role in the relaxation process. Our numerical simulations based on the binary Gross-Pitaevskii model reveal the emergence of the dynamical scaling during the relaxation, which is a hallmark of scale-invariant dynamics, in a correlation function for the minor condensate. Tracking exponents characterizing the dynamical scaling in time, we find out a crossover phenomenon that features the change in power exponents of the correlation length. To understand the fundamental mechanism inherent in the scale-invariant relaxation dynamics, we construct a random walk model for droplets. Employing the model, we analytically derive the $1/3$ and $1/2$ power laws and predict the crossover of the scaling. These exponents are in reasonable agreement with the values obtained in the numerical calculations. We also discuss a possible experimental setup for observing the scale-invariant dynamics.

Generalized Berry phase for a bosonic Bogoliubov system with exceptional points

We discuss the topology of Bogoliubov excitation bands from a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Since the Bogoliubov equation for a bosonic system is non-Hermitian, complex eigenvalues often appear and induce dynamical instability. As a function of momentum, the onset of appearance and disappearance of complex eigenvalues is an exceptional point (EP), which is a point where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable and hence the Berry connection and curvature are ill-defined, preventing defining topological invariants. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to remove EPs from the Brillouin zone by introducing an imaginary part of the momentum. We then define the Berry phase for a one-dimensional bosonic Bogoliubov system. Extending the argument for Hermitian systems, the Berry phase for an inversion-symmetric system is shown to be $Z_2$. As concrete examples, we numerically investigate two toy models and confirm the bulk-edge correspondence even in the presence of complex eigenvalues. The $Z_2$ invariant associated with particle-hole symmetry and the winding number for a time-reversal-symmetric system are also discussed.

Coarsening dynamics driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

In ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the quadratic Zeeman effect controls magnetic anisotropy, which affects on magnetic domain pattern formation. While the longitudinal magnetization is dominant (similar to the Ising model) for a negative quadratic Zeeman energy, the transverse magnetization is dominant (similar to the XY model) for a positive one. When the quadratic Zeeman energy is positive, the coarsening dynamics is driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in the same way as the XY model. However, due to superfluid flow of atoms, there exist several combinations of vortex-antivortex pairs in ferromagnetic BECs, which makes the coarsening dynamics more complicated than that of the XY model. We propose a revised domain growth law, which is based on the growth law of the two-dimensional XY model, for a two-dimensional ferromagnetic BEC with a positive quadratic Zeeman energy.

Skyrmionic magnetization configurations at chiral magnet/ferromagnet heterostructures

We consider magnetization configurations at chiral magnet (CM)/ferromagnet (FM) heterostructures. In the CM, magnetic skyrmions and spin helices emerge due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which then penetrate into the adjacent FM. However, because the non-uniform magnetization structures are energetically unfavorable in the FM, the penetrated magnetization structures are deformed, resulting in exotic three-dimensional configurations, such as skyrmion cones, sideways skyrmions, and twisted helices and skyrmions. We discuss the stability of possible magnetization configurations at the CM/FM and CM/FM/CM hybrid structures within the framework of the variational method, and find that various magnetization configurations appear in the ground state, some of which cause nontrivial emergent magnetic field.

Spin and charge transport induced by a twisted light beam on a surface of a topological insulator

We theoretically study spin and charge transport induced by a twisted light beam irradiated on a disordered surface of a doped three dimensional topological insulator (TI). We find that various types of spin vortices are imprinted on the surface of the TI depending on the spin and orbital angular momentum of the incident light. The key mechanism for the appearance of the unconventional spin structure is the spin-momentum locking in the surface state of the TI. Besides, the diffusive transport of electrons under an inhomogeneous electric field causes a gradient of the charge density, which then induces nonlocal charge current and spin density as well as the spin current. We discuss the relation between these quantities within the linear response to the applied electric field using the Keldysh-Green's function method.

Goldstone-mode Instability leading to Fragmentation in a Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

We apply the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory to spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the Goldstone magnon leads instability leading to fragmentation. Unlike the dynamical instability, where modes with complex eigenfrequencies grow exponentially, here the zero-energy mode exhibits algebraic growth. We also point out that a small fraction of thermally excited atoms enhances the fragmentation dynamics.

Quantum Mass Acquisition in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

Quantum mass acquisition, in which a massless (quasi)particle becomes massive due to quantum corrections, is predicted to occur in several subfields of physics. However, its experimental observation remains elusive since the emergent energy gap is too small. We show that a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is an excellent candidate for the observation of such a peculiar phenomenon as the energy gap turns out to be 2 orders of magnitude larger than the zero-point energy. This extraordinarily large energy gap is a consequence of the dynamical instability. The propagation velocity of the resultant massive excitation mode is found to be decreased by the quantum corrections as opposed to phonons.

Fluctuation-induced and symmetry-prohibited metastabilities in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates provide a unique example in which the Bogoliubov theory fails to describe the metastability associated with first-order quantum phase transitions. This problem is resolved by developing the spinor Beliaev theory which takes account of quantum fluctuations of the condensate. It is these fluctuations that generate terms of higher than the fourth order in the order-parameter field which are needed for the first-order phase transitions. Besides the conventional first-order phase transitions which are accompanied by metastable states, we find a class of first-order phase transitions which are not accompanied by metastable states. The absence of metastability in these phase transitions holds to all orders of approximation since the metastability is prohibited by the symmetry of the Hamiltonian at the phase boundary. Finally, the possibility of macroscopic quantum tunneling from a metastable state to the ground state is discussed.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a trapped ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

Spontaneous spin vortex formation in the magnetic phase transition of a trapped spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using mean-field theory. In a harmonic trapping potential, an inhomogeneous atomic density leads to spatial variations of the critical point, magnetization time scale, and spin correlation length. The Kibble-Zurek phenomena are shown to emerge even in such inhomogeneous systems, when the quench of the quadratic Zeeman energy is fast enough. For slow quench, the magnetized region gradually expands from the center of the trap pushing out spin vortices, which hinders the Kibble-Zurek mechanism from occurring. A harmonic trap with a plug potential is also taken into account.

Magnetic domain growth in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Effects of current

Magnetic domain patterns in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) show different properties depending on the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation. Another important factor that affects domain patterns and domain growth is superfluid flow of atoms. Domain growth in a ferromagnetic BEC with negative quadratic Zeeman energy is characterized by the same growth law as (classical) binary fluid in the inertial hydrodynamic regime. In the absence of the superfluid flow, the domain growth law for negative quadratic Zeeman energy is the same as that of scalar conserved fields such as binary alloys.

Beliaev theory of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

By generalizing the Green's function approach proposed by Beliaev [1, 2], we investigate the effect of quantum depletion on the energy spectra of elementary excitations in an F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, in particular, of 87Rb atoms in an external magnetic field. We find that quantum depletion increases the effective mass of magnons in the spin-wave excitations with quadratic dispersion relations. The enhancement factor turns out to be the same for both ferromagnetic and polar phases, and also independent of the magnitude of the external magnetic field. The lifetime of these magnons in a 87Rb spinor BEC is shown to be much longer than that of phonons. We propose an experimental setup to measure the effective mass of these magnons in a spinor Bose gas by exploiting the effect of a nonlinear dispersion relation on the spatial expansion of a wave packet of transverse magnetization. This type of measurement has practical applications, for example, in precision magnetometry.

Finite temperature phase diagram of a spin-1 Bose gas

We formulate a self-consistent Hartree-Fock theory for a spin-1 Bose gas at finite temperature and apply it to characterizing the phase diagram. We find that spin coherence between thermal atoms in different magnetic sub-levels develops via coherent collisions with the condensed atoms, and is a crucial factor in determining the phase diagram. We develop analytical expressions to characterize the interaction and temperature dependent shifts of the phase boundaries.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

An overview on the physics of spinor and dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is given. Mean-field ground states, Bogoliubov spectra, and many-body ground and excited states of spinor BECs are discussed. Properties of spin-polarized dipolar BECs and those of spinor-dipolar BECs are reviewed. Some of the unique features of the vortices in spinor BECs such as fractional vortices and non-Abelian vortices are delineated. The symmetry of the order parameter is classified using group theory, and various topological excitations are investigated based on homotopy theory. Some of the more recent developments in a spinor BEC are discussed.

Topological classification of vortex-core structures of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We classify vortex-core structures according to the topology of the order parameter space. By developing a method to characterize how the order parameter changes inside the vortex core. We apply this method to the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the vortex-core structures are classified by winding numbers that are locally defined in the core region. We also show that a vortex-core structure with a nontrivial winding number can be stabilized under a negative quadratic Zeeman effect.

Abe homotopy classification of topological excitations under the topological influence of vortices

Topological excitations are usually classified by the $n$th homotopy group $π_n$. However, for topological excitations that coexist with vortices, there are case in which an element of $π_n$ cannot properly describe the charge of a topological excitation due to the influence of the vortices. This is because an element of $π_n$ corresponding to the charge of a topological excitation may change when the topological excitation circumnavigates a vortex. This phenomenon is referred to as the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$. In this paper, we show that topological excitations coexisting with vortices are classified by the Abe homotopy group $κ_n$. The $n$th Abe homotopy group $κ_n$ is defined as a semi-direct product of $π_1$ and $π_n$. In this framework, the action of $π_1$ on $π_n$ is understood as originating from noncommutativity between $π_1$ and $π_n$. We show that a physical charge of a topological excitation can be described in terms of the conjugacy class of the Abe homotopy group. Moreover, the Abe homotopy group naturally describes vortex-pair creation and annihilation processes, which also influence topological excitations. We calculate the influence of vortices on topological excitations for the case in which the order parameter manifold is $S^n/K$, where $S^n$ is an $n$-dimensional sphere and $K$ is a discrete subgroup of $SO(n+1)$. We show that the influence of vortices on a topological excitation exists only if $n$ is even and $K$ includes a nontrivial element of $O(n)/SO(n)$.

Dissipative hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Analogy to magnetization dynamics in conducting ferromagnets

The hydrodynamic equation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) gives a simple description of spin dynamics in the condensate. We introduce the hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic BEC with dissipation originating from the energy dissipation of the condensate. The dissipative hydrodynamic equation has the same form as an extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, which describes the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnets interacting with spin-polarized currents. Employing the dissipative hydrodynamic equation, we demonstrate the magnetic domain pattern dynamics of a ferromagnetic BEC in the presence and absence of a current of particles, and discuss the effects of the current on domain pattern formation. We also discuss the characteristic lengths of domain patterns that have domain walls with and without finite magnetization.

Effects of thermal and quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram of a spin-1 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate effects of thermal and quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram of a spin-1 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under a quadratic Zeeman effect. Due to the large ratio of spinindependent to spin-dependent interactions of 87Rb atoms, the effect of noncondensed atoms on the condensate is much more significant than that in scalar BECs. We find that the condensate and spontaneous magnetization emerge at different temperatures when the ground state is in the brokenaxisymmetry phase. In this phase, a magnetized condensate induces spin coherence of noncondensed atoms in different magnetic sublevels, resulting in temperature-dependent magnetization of the noncondensate. We also examine the effect of quantum fluctuations on the order parameter at absolute zero, and find that the ground-state phase diagram is significantly altered by quantum depletion.

Symmetry Classification of Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

We propose a method for systematically finding ground states of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates by utilizing symmetry properties of the system. By this method, we can find not only an inert state, whose symmetry is maximal in the manifold under consideration, but also a non-inert state, which has lower symmetry and depends on the parameters in the Hamiltonian. We establish the symmetry-classification method for the spin-1, 2 and 3 cases at zero magnetic field, and find a new phase in the last case. Properties of vortices in the spin-3 system are also discussed.

Vortex Tiling in a Spin-2 Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

We point out that the internal spin symmetry of the order parameter manifests itself at the core of a fractional vortex in real space without spin-orbit coupling. Such symmetry breaking arises from a topological constraint and the commensurability between spin symmetries of the order parameters inside and outside the core. Our prediction can be applied to probe the cyclic order parameter in a rotating spin-2 $^{87}$Rb condensate as a non-circular vortex core in a biaxial nematic state.

Hydrodynamic equation of a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We introduce equations of motion for spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, written using a vector expressing the superfluid velocity and a complex scalar describing the magnetization. This simple hydrodynamical description extracts the dynamics of spin wave and affords a straightforward approach by which to investigate the spin dynamics of the condensate. To demonstrate the advantages of the description, we illustrate dynamical instability and magnetic fluctuation preference, which are expressed in analytical forms.

Spontaneous Magnetic Ordering in a Ferromagnetic Spinor Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the spin dynamics in a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and non-stationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the periodicity of the order differs by a factor of three and the checkerboard pattern eventually dissolves in our numerical simulations. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

Topological Excitations in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

A rich variety of order parameter manifolds of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) admit various kinds of topological excitations, such as fractional vortices, monopoles, skyrmions, and knots. In this paper, we discuss two topological excitations in spinor BECs: non-Abelian vortices and knots. Unlike conventional vortices, non-Abelian vortices neither reconnect themselves nor pass through each other, but create a rung between them in a topologically stable manner. We discuss the collision dynamics of non-Abelian vortices in the cyclic phase of a spin-2 BEC. In the latter part, we show that a knot, which is a unique topological object characterized by a linking number or a Hopf invariant [$π_3 (S^2)=Z$], can be created using a conventional quadrupole magnetic field in a cold atomic system.

Topological Influence between Monopoles and Vortices: a Possible Resolution of the Monopole Problem

Grand unified theories of fundamental forces predict that magnetic monopoles are inevitable in the Universe because the second homotopy group of the order parameter manifold is $\mathbb{Z}$. We point out that monopoles can annihilate in pairs due to an influence of Alice strings. As a consequence, a monopole charge is charactarized by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ rather than $\mathbb{Z}$ if the Universe can accommodate Alice strings, which is the case of certain grand unified theories.

Ferrofluidity in a two-component dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

It is shown that the interface in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in which one component exhibits a dipole-dipole interaction spontaneously forms patterns similar to those formed in a magnetic liquid subject to a magnetic field. A hexagonal pattern, hysteretic behavior, and soliton-like structure are numerically demonstrated. A phenomenon similar to the labyrinthine instability is also found. These phenomena may be realized using a 52Cr BEC. The periodic density modulation in the superfluid ground state offers evidence of supersolidity.
