The Cauchy problem for the periodic Kadomtsev--Petviashvili--II equation below $L^2$

We extend Bourgain's $L^2$-wellposedness result for the KP-II equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ to initial data with negative Sobolev regularity. The key ingredient is a new linear $L^4$-Strichartz estimate which is effective on frequency-dependent time scales. The $L^4$-Strichartz estimates follow from combining an $\ell^2$-decoupling inequality recently proved by Guth--Maldague--Oh with semiclassical Strichartz estimates. Moreover, we rely on a variant of Bourgain's bilinear Strichartz estimate on frequency-dependent times, which is proved via the Córdoba--Fefferman square function estimate.

Biharmonic wave maps: Local wellposedness in high regularity

We show the local wellposedness of biharmonic wave maps with initial data of sufficiently high Sobolev regularity and a blow-up criterion in the sup-norm of the gradient of the solutions. In contrast to the wave maps equation we use a vanishing viscosity argument and an appropriate parabolic regularization in order to obtain the existence result. The geometric nature of the equation is exploited to prove convergence of approximate solutions, uniqueness of the limit, and continuous dependence on initial data.

The Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in high dimensions: Small initial data of critical regularity

The Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in spatial dimension $d\geq 5$ is considered. The Cauchy problem is shown to be globally well-posed for small initial data in critical spaces and it is proved that solutions scatter to free solutions as $t \to \pm \infty$. The proof is based on i) novel endpoint non-isotropic Strichartz estimates which are derived from the $(d-1)$-dimensional Schrödinger equation, ii) transversal bilinear restriction estimates, and iii) an interpolation argument in critical function spaces. Under an additional radiality assumption, a similar result is obtained in dimension $d=4$.

Small data scattering for semi-relativistic equations with Hartree type nonlinearity

We prove that the initial value problem for the equation \[ - i\partial_t u + \sqrt{m^2-Δ} \, u= (\frac{e^{-μ_0 |x|}}{|x|} \ast |u|^2)u \ \text{in} \ \mathbb R^{1+3}, \quad m\ge 0, \ μ_0 >0\] is globally well-posed and the solution scatters to free waves asymptotically as $t \to \pm \infty$ if we start with initial data which is small in $H^s(\mathbb R^{3})$ for $s>\frac12$, and if $m>0$. Moreover, if the initial data is radially symmetric we can improve the above result to $m\ge 0$ and $s>0$, which is almost optimal, in the sense that $L^2(\mathbb R^{3})$ is the critical space for the equation. The main ingredients in the proof are certain endpoint Strichartz estimates, $L^2(\mathbb R^{1+3})$ bilinear estimates for free waves and the application of the $U^p$ and $V^p$ function spaces.

The cubic Dirac equation: Small initial data in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for the cubic Dirac equation for small data in the critical space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$. The main ingredient is obtaining a sharp end-point Strichartz estimate for the Klein-Gordon equation. In a classical sense this fails and it is related to the failure of the endpoint Strichartz estimate for the wave equation in space dimension three. In this paper, systems of coordinate frames are constructed in which endpoint Strichartz estimates are recovered and energy estimates are established.

The energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a product of spheres

Let $(M,g)$ be a compact smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. It is proved that the energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation is globally well-posed for small initial data in $H^1(M)$, provided that a certain tri-linear estimate for free solutions holds true. This estimate is known to hold true on the sphere and tori in $3d$ and verified here in the case $\mathbb{S}\times\mathbb{S}^2$. The necessity of a weak form of this tri-linear estimate is also discussed.

The Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on general rectangular tori

In this work, we study the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on general --rational and irrational-- rectangular tori of dimension two and three. This is a system of infinitely many linear partial differential equations which arises in the rigorous derivation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We prove a conditional uniqueness result for the hierarchy. In two dimensions, this result allows us to obtain a rigorous derivation of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the dynamics of many-body quantum systems. On irrational tori, this question was posed as an open problem in previous work of Kirkpatrick, Schlein, and Staffilani.

The quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on three-dimensional Zoll manifolds

Let (M,g) be a three-dimensional smooth compact Riemannian manifold such that all geodesics are simple and closed with a common minimal period, such as the 3-sphere S^3 with canonical metric. In this work the global well-posedness problem for the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation i\partial_t u+Δu=\pm|u|^4u, u|_{t=0}=u_0 is solved for small initial data u_0 in the energy space H^1(M), which is the scaling-critical space. Further, local well-posedness for large data, as well as persistence of higher initial Sobolev regularity is obtained. This extends previous results of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov to the endpoint case.

Strichartz estimates for partially periodic solutions to Schrödinger equations in 4d and applications

We consider the energy critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on periodic domains of the form R^m x T^{4-m} with m=0,1,2,3. Assuming that a certain L^4 Strichartz estimate holds for solutions to the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation, we prove that the nonlinear problem is locally well-posed in the energy space. Then we verify that the L^4 estimate holds if m=2,3, leaving open the cases m=0,1.

Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation on polygonal domains

We prove Strichartz estimates with a loss of derivatives for the Schrödinger equation on polygonal domains with either Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions. Using a standard doubling procedure, estimates the on polygon follow from those on Euclidean surfaces with conical singularities. We develop a Littlewood-Paley squarefunction estimate with respect to the spectrum of the Laplacian on these spaces. This allows us to reduce matters to proving estimates at each frequency scale. The problem can be localized in space provided the time intervals are sufficiently small. Strichartz estimates then follow from a result of the second author regarding the Schrödinger equation on the Euclidean cone.

A convolution estimate for two-dimensional hypersurfaces

Given three transversal and sufficiently regular hypersurfaces in R^3 it follows from work of Bennett-Carbery-Wright that the convolution of two L^2 functions supported of the first and second hypersurface, respectively, can be restricted to an L^2 function on the third hypersurface, which can be considered as a nonlinear version of the Loomis-Whitney inequality. We generalize this result to a class of C^{1,beta} hypersurfaces in R^3, under scaleable assumptions. The resulting uniform L^2 estimate has applications to nonlinear dispersive equations.

Well-posedness and scattering for the KP-II equation in a critical space

The Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-II equation (u_t+u_{xxx}+uu_x)_x+u_{yy}=0 is considered. A small data global well-posedness and scattering result in the scale invariant, non-isotropic, homogeneous Sobolev space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) is derived. Additionally, it is proved that for arbitrarily large initial data the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed in the homogeneous space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) and in the inhomogeneous space H^{-1/2,0}(R^2), respectively.
